RESUMO A síndrome de Papillon-Lefèvre é um distúrbio genético autossômico recessivo raro, com prevalência de um a quatro casos por milhão. É caracterizada por hiperqueratose palmoplantar difusa ou localizada. Não tem predileção por gênero ou raça. Etiologia e patogênese da síndrome de Papillon-Lefèvre ainda são obscuras. No entanto, acredita-se que a síndrome de Papillon-Lefèvre seja causada por um defeito genético localizado no cromossomo 11, responsável pela codificação da catepsina C, uma protease lisossômica presente principalmente nas regiões epiteliais, como palma das mãos, solas dos pés, joelhos e mucosa oral queratinizada, que são as áreas mais afetadas pela síndrome de Papillon-Lefèvre. Periodontite é uma manifestação oral da SPL que resulta em perda precoce de dentes decíduos e permanentes. Este artigo tem como objetivo descrever um caso de um paciente de 11 anos de idade com diagnóstico desíndrome de Papillon-Lefèvre aos 4 anos. Após o diagnóstico, a criança perdeu todos os dentes decíduos e procurou atendimento odontológico na Universidade Federal de Goiás, há cerca de 2 anos. Ele está sendo tratado usando uma abordagem multidisciplinar envolvendo as áreas de periodontia, patologia e ortodontia para evitar a perda de dentes permanentes e fornecer condições para preservar a saúde dos dentes restantes, mantendo a função e a estética.

ABSTRACT Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder with a prevalence of one to four cases per million. It is characterized by diffuse or localized palmoplantar hyperkeratosis. It has no gender or racial predilection. Etiology and pathogenesis of Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome are still obscure. However, Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome is believed to be caused by a genetic defect located on chromosome 11, which is responsible for coding cathepsin C, a lysosomal protease present mainly in the epithelial regions such as the palms, soles of feet, knees, and keratinized oral mucosa, which are the most commonly affected areas in Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome. Periodontitis is an oral manifestation of Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome that results in early loss of deciduous and permanent teeth. This report aims to describe a case of an 11-year-old male patient diagnosed with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome at 4 years of age. After the diagnosis, the child lost all deciduous teeth and sought dental service at the Federal University of Goiás 2 years ago. He is being treated using a multidisciplinary approach involving the areas of periodontics, pathology, and orthodontics to avoid loss of permanent teeth and to provide conditions for preserving the health of remaining teeth while maintaining the function and the esthetics.

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the local effect of simvastatin (SVT) combined with deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) with hydroxyapatite/β-tricalcium phosphate biphasic ceramics (HA/TCP) and with collagen sponge (CS) on bone repair in critical size defects (CSDs) in rat calvaria. Methods Forty-two 5-mm diameter CSDs were made bilaterally in the calvaria of 18 rats. The animals were allocated according to the type of biomaterial and associations used to fill the CSD. After 8 weeks, the animals were euthanized, and their calvaria were evaluated for repaired tissue composition using histologic and histometric analyses. Results In the histometric analysis, the use of SVT showed to increase bone formation in the CSDs when combined with all the bone substitutes tested in this study (p<0.05). Greater bone formation was observed in the groups with SVT compared to the groups without SVT. Conclusions The use of SVT without the need for a vehicle and combined with a commercially available biomaterial may be a cheaper way to potentiate the formation of bone tissue without the need to produce new biomaterials. Therefore, SVT combined with DBB induced significantly greater new bone formation than did the other treatments.

ABSTRACT: Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the periodontal status of women during pregnancy attended in a maternity hospital, as well as their oral hygiene habits. Materials and Methods: The sample was composed by 100 pregnant women, ranging from their first to ninth month of pregnancy, were examined at a maternity hospital in Goiás, Brazil. They received information about oral hygiene techniques and they were submmited a periodontal examination in a dentist’s office, where the Periodontal Screening and Recording (PSR) codes were verified along with bleeding on probing and tooth loss. Results: About their pregnancy period, the most (46%) were in their third trimester at the time of this study. The gingival index showed an average of 12% and 90% of the patients presented PSR Code 2. As for dental hygiene, 55% reported brushing three times a day and 48% used dental floss daily. Conclusion: The most pregnant women in the third trimester, showed a prevalence for gingivitis. They reported brushing their teeth three times a day and using dental floss daily.
