Resumo Embora o gambá comum, Didelphis marsupialis (Didelphimorphia: Didelphidae) seja uma espécie amplamente distribuída na América do Sul, o conhecimento sobre seus helmintos parasitos e a estrutura da comunidade de helmintos são escassos. Os objetivos deste estudo foram descrever a composição de espécies e analisar a estrutura da comunidade helmíntica do gambá comum em uma área do Arco Amazônico, no norte de Mato Grosso. Os helmintos foram recuperados, contados e identificados em 32 indivíduos. Ao todo, 10.198 espécimes foram categorizados em 9 táxons de helmintos (sete nematoides, um cestoide e um acantocéfalo). As espécies mais abundantes foram Aspidodera raillieti, Viannaia hamata e Travassostrongylus orloffi. Não foram observadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas na abundância e prevalência de helmintos entre os sexos dos hospedeiros. No entanto, hospedeiros jovens apresentaram maior abundância e prevalência de Didelphonema longispiculata, enquanto Oligacanthorhynchus microcephalus apresentou maior abundância e prevalência em hospedeiros adultos. Este foi o primeiro estudo a analisar a helmintofauna e a estrutura da comunidade helmíntica de D. marsupialis no Arco Amazônico. Este é o primeiro relato da presença de A. raillieti, D. longispiculata, T. orloffi, T. minuta, V. hamata e O. microcephalus no estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil.

Abstract Although the common opossum, Didelphis marsupialis (Didelphimorphia: Didelphidae) is a species widely distributed in South America, knowledge about their helminth parasites and helminth community structure is scarce. The aims of this study were to describe the species composition and analyze the structure of the helminth community of the common opossum in an area of the Amazonian Arc in northern Mato Grosso. The helminths were recovered, counted, and identified in 32 individuals. Overall, 10,198 specimens were categorized into 9 helminths taxa (seven nematodes, one cestode, and one acanthocephalan). The most abundant species were Aspidodera raillieti, Viannaia hamata, and Travassostrongylus orloffi. No statistically significant differences in helminth abundance and prevalence were observed between host sexes. However, young hosts had higher abundance and prevalence of Didelphonema longispiculata, whereas Oligacanthorhynchus microcephalus had higher abundance and prevalence in adult hosts. This was the first study to analyze the helminth fauna and helminth community structure of D. marsupialis in the Amazonian Arc. This is the first report of the presence of A. raillieti, D. longispiculata, T. orloffi, T. minuta, V. hamata, and O. microcephalus in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil.

Abstract This study examined the relationship between resting heart rate (RHRr) and anthropometric, metabolic and hemodynamic parameters in subjects aged 80 years and over. One hundred thirteen individuals were divided into two groups (RHR:<66 beats/min and ≥66 beats/min). Anthropometric parameters (weight, height, body mass index and waist circumference (WC) were measured. Hemodynamic parameters (systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) pressure) were measured and pulse pressures (PP) were obtained. Metabolic parameters were fasting blood glucose, triglycerides and total cholesterol. In elderly aged 80 and over, RHR influenced the changes observed in DBP, PP and triglycerides. Additionally, subjects with RHR≥66 beats/min had higher DBP, glucose, total cholesterol and lower PP as compared with elderly with RHR<66 beats/min. Men demonstrated greater weight, height, and WC than women while women had higher percentage of body fat, trunk fat, and higher total cholesterol. Thus, subjects with 80 years old and over who present RHR≥66 have higher DBP and lower PP and heart rate variability compared with the elderly with RHR<66.

Cotesia flavipes (Cameron, 1891) (Hymenoptera) is a gregarious endoparasitoid used in applied biological control against Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) (Lepidoptera). In this study, we characterize the larval external morphology and the number of instars of C. flavipes. Parasitized larvae of D. saccharalis were sampled from the 1st to the 10th day after parasitism and dissected in an anticoagulant buffer for collection of C. flavipes immatures. Immatures were processed for scanning electron microscopy. Larvae of C. flavipes were prepared in NaOH solution and slide mounted to allow for mandible size measurements. Analysis of measurements of the parasitoid larval mandible size indicated that C. flavipes has three instars. Newly hatched larvae are caudate-mandibulate, assuming a hymenopteriform shape later in their development. The anal vesicle began to expand in the first instar and, once expanded, remained unchanged up to the beginning of the third instar. At the third instar, the anal vesicle decreased in volume. Herein we report the development and possible functions of the larval external structures modified during the development of C. flavipes, as for example their role in aiding newly-eclosed larvae to avoid the host immune response and to move within the host. To summarize the morphological changes during parasitoid growth, we should mention that the modifications in the anal vesicle were correlated with the feeding activity, and the maintenance of the anal vesicle indicates that this structure remained functional, probably playing a role in nutrient absorption and host regulation. On the other hand, the mandibles of early stage larvae are probably used to assist the parasitoid larvae during eclosion.

OBJETIVO: Este estudo tem por objetivo avaliar os efeitos, no seguimento de 6 meses, do transplante autólogo, transendocárdico, de células mononucleares da medula óssea (TACMMO), sobre os sintomas, capacidade de exercício, perfusão e contratilidade miocárdica nos portadores de cardiopatia isquêmica grave. MÉTODOS: Vinte e um pacientes foram incluídos neste estudo prospectivo (os 14 primeiros pacientes, grupo tratado; os 7 últimos pacientes, grupo controle). Inicialmente todos os indivíduos foram submetidos à avaliação clínica e laboratorial, teste ergométrico, ecocardiograma, cintilografia miocárdica e Holter de 24 horas. As CMMO foram isoladas, lavadas e diluídas em salina 0,9% para injeção transendocárdica em áreas de miocárdio viável no grupo tratado, (15 injeções de 0,2 ml). Todos os pacientes foram reavaliados ao final de 2 e 6 meses de acompanhamento. RESULTADOS: Os dados demográficos e demais características não diferiram significativamente entre os grupos na avaliação inicial. Não foram observados eventos adversos maiores relacionados ao TACMMO. Ao final de 6 meses, houve redução da área isquêmica na imagem de perfusão nuclear (p=0,05) e melhora significativa dos sintomas, da capacidade funcional e da função global do ventrículo esquerdo. CONCLUSÃO: Este estudo demonstra a segurança da realização de injeções transendocárdicas de CMMO em humanos com cardiopatia isquêmica associada a grave disfunção ventricular. Os efeitos observados em curto prazo foram mantidos até 6 meses de acompanhamento.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at assessing the effects of autologous transendocardial transplantation of bone marrow mononuclear cells (ATTBMMC) on symptoms, exercise capacity, myocardial perfusion and contractility in patients with severe ischemic heart disease during a 6-month follow-up period. METHODS: This prospective study comprised 21 patients as follows: the first 14 patients forming the treated group, and the last 7 patients forming the control group. Initially, all patients underwent clinical and laboratory assessment, treadmill testing, echocardiography, myocardial scintigraphy, and 24-hour Holter. The bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMC) were isolated, washed, and diluted in 0.9% saline solution for transendocardial injection in areas of viable myocardium in the treated group, (15 0.2-mL injections). All patients were reassessed in the end of 2 and 6 months of follow-up. RESULTS: The demographic data and other characteristics did not significantly differ between the groups in the initial evaluation. No major adverse events related to the ATTBMMC were observed. In the end of 6 months, a reduction in the ischemic area was observed on nuclear perfusion imaging (P=0.05), as was a significant improvement in symptoms, functional capacity, and left ventricular overall function. CONCLUSION: This study showed that transendocardial injections of BMMC are safe in human beings with ischemic heart disease associated with severe ventricular dysfunction. The effects observed in the short run were maintained up to the sixth month of follow-up.
