OBJETIVO: Avaliar o conhecimento de dentistas e médicos sobre o diagnóstico e tratamento do paciente com queixa de halitose. METODOLOGIA: Os dados foram coletados em uma amostra de profissionais de saúde (81 dentistas e 19 médicos) na cidade de João Pessoa, Brasil. Um questionário estruturado foi utilizado para registrar o conhecimento profissional clínico sobre halitose: frequência, diagnóstico, tratamento e fatores predisponentes. RESULTADOS: Médicos e dentistas relataram em geral diferentes respostas com base em eu conhecimento e prática clínica: queixa de halitose entre os pacientes (63% e 38% para médicos e dentistas, respectivamente); halitose como queixa principal (42% e 23%); percepção da halitose entre os pacientes (10% e 67%); informação profissional ao paciente sobre a halitose (58% e 89%); realização do tratamento da halitose pelo profissional (68% e 65%). Os dentistas apontaram doença periodontal, higiene bucal deficiente e cárie como as causas comuns de halitose, enquanto que os médicos relataram alterações bucais, sinusite e doença por refluxo como os principais fatores etiológicos. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados sugerem que não há alta concordância entre médicos e dentistas sobre fatores relacionados ao diagnóstico e tratamento da halitose.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the knowledge of dentists and physicians about the diagnosis and treatment of the patient complaining of halitosis. METHODS: Data were collected from a sample of healthcare professionals (81 dentists and 19 physicians) from the city of João Pessoa, Brazil. A structured questionnaire was used to record the professional knowledge about halitosis: frequency, diagnosis, treatment and predisposing factors. RESULTS: Physicians and dentists reported overall different responses based on their clinical knowledge and practice: patient's complaint of halitosis (63% and 38% for physicians and dentists, respectively); halitosis as the main complaint (42% and 23%); perception of halitosis among patients (10% and 67%), professional information to the patient about the halitosis (58% and 89%). Periodontal disease, poor oral hygiene and caries were regarded as the most common causes of halitosis for dentists, but physicians believed that oral cavity changes, sinusitis and reflux disease were the main etiological factors. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that there is not a high agreement between dentists and physicians regarding halitosis diagnosis and treatment.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar um programa de educação e promoção de saúde bucal em crianças de três creches públicas da cidade de João Pessoa, PB, Brasil. METODOLOGIA: A amostra foi constituída de 219 crianças de 0 a 48 meses divididas em quatro grupos etários: 0 a 12; 13 a 24; 25 a 36 e 37 a 48 meses. As crianças foram submetidas a exames clínicos e procedimentos preventivos de higiene bucal e aplicação tópica de flúor em intervalos trimestrais durante 12 meses. As mães das crianças receberam instrução de higiene. Registraram-se os índices de ceo-d e presença de manchas brancas ativas (MBA). RESULTADOS: As médias (desvio-padrão) do ceo-d inicial e final foram de 0,65 (1,3) e 0,72 (1,5) respectivamente (P<0,05). O número de MBAs inicial e final foi 44 e 08, respectivamente. A ausência de higiene noturna foi associada a MBA para crianças que tomavam mamadeira noturna. As variáveis relevantes para o surgimento de cárie foram a faixa etária, ausência de higiene noturna e amamentação noturna; para MBA somente a falta de higiene noturna foi significativa. CONCLUSÃO: O programa mostrou-se eficaz na manutenção da saúde bucal. Os fatores de risco mais relevantes para a cárie dentária foram falta de higiene e amamentação noturna.

PURPOSE: To evaluate an educative and oral health promotion program for children from three public daycare facilities in the city of João Pessoa (PB), in the Northeastern region of Brazil. METHODS: Sample was composed of 219 children who were divided into four age groups: 0 to 12, 13 to 24, 25 to 36 and 37 to 48 months. All children were submitted to clinical exams and preventive procedures of hygiene and topical application of fluoride at 3-month intervals during 12 months. Mothers were given instructions of oral hygiene of their children. The dmft index and the presence of active white spots (AWS) were recorded. RESULTS: Mean (SD) values of the initial and final dmft were 0.65 (1.3) and 0.72 (1.5), respectively (P<0.05). The initial and final numbers of AWS were 44 and 08, respectively. The absence of nocturnal hygiene was associated with AWS for children that received nocturnal breast-feeding. The most relevant variables for dental caries development were: age group, absence of nocturnal oral hygiene and nocturnal breast-feeding; for AWS only the absence of nocturnal oral hygiene was significant (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: This oral health program showed to be effective in the maintenance of oral health. The most relevant risk factors for dental caries were absence of nocturnal oral hygiene and nocturnal breast-feeding.

OBJETIVO: Verificar o número de Streptococcus mutans em saliva de pacientes com estomatite protética antes e após a terapia antifúngica. METODOLOGIA: Após exame clínico de 93 pacientes, 47 foram selecionados para exame micológico e desta amostra foram selecionados trinta pacientes: 15 com diagnóstico positivo e 15 com diagnóstico negativo de candidose foram avaliados para contagem de S. mutans, determinação de fluxo salivar e capacidade tampão. Higiene bucal e da prótese, tempo de confecção, tipo de lesão e dados salivares foram relacionados com características clínicas e laboratoriais de Candida. RESULTADOS: As lesões frequentes foram dos tipos I (43,5%) e II (53,5%). A quantidade de S. mutans foi seis vezes maior em pacientes com candidose e foi associada com baixo fluxo salivar e higiene oral deficiente. Após a terapia, a redução de S. mutans foi verificada particularmente em pacientes com fluxo salivar normal. Os valores variaram de 0,01 a 3,88 UFC/ml x 10(4). CONCLUSÃO: Os dados sugerem que os Streptococcus colaboram com Candida spp na etiopatogenia da estomatite protética. O uso de agentes antimicrobianos orais pode propiciar efeito benéfico para pacientes com estomatite protética submetidos à terapia antifúngica e que apresentam higiene oral deficiente e parâmetros salivares desfavoráveis.

PURPOSE: To assess the number of Streptococcus mutans in saliva of patients with denture stomatitis before and after antifungal therapy. METHODS: After examining 93 patients, 47 were selected for fungal test. Then, from this sample, thirty patients were selected: 15 with positive and 15 with negative diagnosis for candidiasis that were evaluated for S. mutans counting, salivary flow and buffer capacity evaluation. Oral hygiene and prosthesis hygiene, period using prosthesis, lesion type and salivary data were related with clinical laboratorial characteristics of the patients with Candida. RESULTS: The most frequent lesions were type I (43.5%) and II (53.5%). The amount of S. mutans was six times higher in patients with candidiasis and it was associated with low salivary flow and poor oral hygiene. After therapy, a reduction of S. mutans was verified particularly in patients with normal salivary flow. The values ranged from 0.01 to 3.88 x 10(4) cfu/mL. CONCLUSION: The data suggest that Streptococcus spp collaborates with Candida spp in the etiology and pathogenesis of denture stomatitis. The use of oral antimicrobial agents may provide a beneficial effect for denture stomatitis patients that are under antifungal therapy and that have poor oral hygiene and unfavorable salivary parameters.
