Abstract Anthropogenic interventions have had a compromising effect on environmental health, intensifying the degradation of ecosystems, and the quantity of chemical pollutants released into nature. Therefore, research areas within the scope of environmental assessments and monitoring such as ecotoxicology have contributed to the determination of the toxic potential of contaminants. A small cyprinid known as the zebrafish (Danio rerio), the use of which has exponentially grown, is an alternative vertebrate model for scientific research, mainly in the assessment of environmental risks. The species exhibits several advantages for breeding in a laboratory, in addition to presenting multi-biomarkers of environmental toxicity. Thus, this review aims to present the main characteristics and advantages of working with this species, as well as show studies related to ecotoxicology involving biomarkers of toxicity in zebrafish. The results show a progressive trend towards employing the species in environmental risk analyses, it is an increasingly recommended species in the assessment of the toxicity level of a range of chemical pollutants. The development of future technologies must contribute to scientific advancement, rendering the potential application of this model organism an even more widespread one, which will certainly help in bridging knowledge gaps in various areas of study.

ABSTRACT. The aim of the study was to determine the yield and quality parameters of organic cherry tomatoes cultivated by intercropping with green manure in two successive years. The experimental design was a randomized block with eight treatments and five replicates as follows: two controls with single cherry tomato crop, one with straw addition and the other without corn straw as a cover crop; cherry tomato intercropped with jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis DC); tomato intercropped with white lupine (Lupinus albus L.); tomato intercropped with sun hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.); tomato intercropped with velvet bean-dwarf [Mucuna deeringiana (Bort) Merrill]; tomato intercropped with mung bean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek]; and tomato intercropped with cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.]. All the treatments with green manure received corn straw as mulch. The treatment group with cowpea had a lower number and weight of commercial fruits compared to the velvet bean-dwarf and jack bean treatments. The number and weight of the commercial fruits were lower in the second year. The fruits in the first year exhibited a higher average weight, a lower nutrient content and a lower soluble solids total TSS/AT ratio than the second year fruits. Green manures did not negatively affect the quality or nutrient content of the tomato fruit.

Purpose to characterize the auditory processing of students who failed in the simplified evaluation of the auditory processing and compare these found results with the results in the behavioral auditory processing evaluation. Methods it was performed the basic audiological evaluation (vocal and tonal audiometry and acoustic immitance measurements), the behavioral battery of the auditory processing, composed by the PSI (Pediatric Speech Intelligibility) portuguese version, PPS (Pitch Pattern Sequence), MLD (Masking Level Difference), SSW (Stagged Spondaic Words) portuguese version and GIN (Gap in Noise), and the retest of the simplified evaluation of the auditory processing with students from nine to fourteen years old registered between 4th to 8th grade of a public school in Porto Alegre. Results ten (90,9%) out of the eleven evaluated students that failed in the simplified evaluation showed alterations in the behavioral battery of auditory processing tests. The subprofiles which had the major number of alterations were the ones of decoding and integration, the most impaired auditory abilities were binaural interaction and separation and binaural integration concomitantly. There was no relevant association between the tasks of the simplified evaluation and the tests of the behavioral battery when comparing the same neuralphisiological report or similar task. Conclusion it was possible to characterize the auditory processing of the analyzed students. From the comparison between the simplified evaluation and the behavioral battery it was noted that the simplified evaluation can be a sensible predictor to the alterations of the auditory processing, in spite of not identifying the specific association between the compared abilities.

INTRODUCTION: Results from our laboratory have demonstrated that intracerebroventricular administration of sildenafil to conscious rats promoted a noticeable increase in both lumbar sympathetic activity and heart rate, with no change in the mean arterial pressure. The intracerebroventricular administration of sildenafil may have produced the hemodynamic effects by activating sympathetic preganglionic neurons in the supraspinal regions and spinal cord. It is well documented that sildenafil increases intracellular cGMP levels by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 and increases cAMP levels by inhibiting other phosphodiesterases. OBJECTIVE: To examine and compare, in conscious rats, the hemodynamic response following the intrathecal administration of sildenafil, 8-bromo-cGMP (an analog of cGMP), forskolin (an activator of adenylate cyclase), or dibutyryl-cAMP (an analog of cAMP) in order to elucidate the possible role of the sympathetic preganglionic neurons in the observed hemodynamic response. RESULTS: The hemodynamic responses observed following intrathecal administration of the studied drugs demonstrated the following: 1) sildenafil increased the mean arterial pressure and heart rate in a dose-dependent manner, 2) increasing doses of 8-bromo-cGMP did not alter the mean arterial pressure and heart rate, 3) forskolin did not affect the mean arterial pressure but did increase the heart rate and 4) dibutyryl-cAMP increased the mean arterial pressure and heart rate, similar to the effect observed following the intrathecal injection of the highest dose of sildenafil. CONCLUSION: Overall, the findings of the current study suggest that the cardiovascular response following the intrathecal administration of sildenafil to conscious rats involves the inhibition of phosphodiesterases other than phosphodiesterase type 5 that increase the cAMP level and the activation of sympathetic preganglionic neurons.
