É em torno dos vários sentidos possíveis do qualificativo de "popular" que gira a problemática deste artigo. A figura carismática do Pe. Cícero Romão Batista, patriarca de Juazeiro, integra de há muito o panteão da devoção popular de milhões de romeiros, mas era objeto até hoje de amplas reservas no seio da Igreja oficial. O momento parece ser de revisão destas perspectivas. A reabilitação institucional do "padrinho" pode estar em curso. Pergunta-se aqui em que medida e com que condições esta transformação da sua imagem pode confluir com certa metamorfose do que se convencionou chamar de "Igreja Popular", de modo a dotar inesperadamente de novo ícone o catolicismo brasileiro em seu conjunto.

The discussion presented in this paper turns around the several possible meanings of the qualifying adjective "popular". The charismatic figure of Father Cícero Romão Batista, Juazeiro's patriarch, has belonged, for many decades, to the pantheon of popular devotion of millions of pilgrims, but it is nevertheless still regarded with strong reserve inside the official Church. At the moment, it seems that this official position is being reviewed. An institutional rehabilitation of the "godfather" may well being under way. This being the case, the paper asks if, to what extent and under what conditions, can this transformation of Father Cícero's image flow together with certain metamorphosis of what has been named "Popular Church", so as to endow, even though unexpectedly, the Brazilian Catholicism with a new icon.

Este artigo sugere que, por trás de uma grande variedade institucional, o campo religioso no Brasil é globalmente atravessado por tendências e modalidades de organização que acabam conferindo um cunho unitário expresso em uma referencia generalizada ao catolicismo, em certa tendência à porosidade e contaminação mútua das identidades religiosas – constantemente combatida, na historia, por influencias racionalizadoras no sentido de uma definição identitária mais rigorosa –, e na presença de um clima "espiritualista" que imprime sua marca aos processos de construção dos sujeitos sociais. Trabalha-se a hipótese da existência de uma dimensão religiosa fundamental, especialmente vigorosa no mundo contemporâneo e anterior às definições institucionais das religiões.

This article suggests that, behind a great institutional diversity, the Brazilian religious field is crisscrossed by tendencies and modalities of organization which grant it a real homogeneity due to an overall reference to Catholicism, a certain tendency to porosity and mutual contamination of religious identities - constantly suppressed by rationalizing influences struggling for a more rigorous identity -, and the presence of a spiritualistic atmosphere which marks the processes of constructing social subjects. Our working hypothesis is that there exists a fundamental religious dimension, specially strong in the contemporary world and prior to institutional definitions of religion.

Não mais do que “impressões”, este texto, sem pretensões científicas, imagina dar conta a um eventual leitor dos pensamentos oferecidos ao próprio autor pela rica experiência de uma cidade (e de um país) fascinante, autêntico laboratório onde a transmutação de passados sucessivos em memória viva evidencia o processo de construção alquímica de um presente histórico. Não se trata de afirmações, mas de sugestões avulsas, que se sabem subjetivas mas assim mesmo capazes – quem sabe – de encetar um diálogo.

Only “impressions” is what this text, which has no scientific pretensions, intends to give to any possible reader of the rich experience and the thoughts originated from the author’s observations of the life in a Russian city, and of the country as well. Russia is a fascinating place, a living laboratory, where all the transformations of a complex past led to the construction of a historical present. This text should not be considered as a roll of definite concepts rather than a suggestion to provide a debate about them.
