ABSTRACT Technologies once applied exclusively in conventional systems have maximized gains in hydroponic systems; however, they still need information for proper use. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of foliar application of thiamine and niacin on growth and gas exchange activities in two lettuce cultivars in an ebb and flow hydroponic system. The completely randomized design (CRD) was used with four treatments and eight replications. The treatments were as follows: T1 - control, T2 - thiamine at a concentration of 200 mg L-1, T3 - niacin at 200 mg L-1, and T4 - thiamine and niacin combined at 100 mg L-1 of each vitamin. Each experimental plot consisted of a lettuce plant. The combined application of thiamine and niacin stood out, increasing the activity of gas exchange of lettuce plants and increasing by about 30% the fresh mass, concerning the control, for both cultivars, followed by the isolated application of niacin. For thiamine, the application alone did not result in significant changes. The vitamins affect the morphophysiology of lettuce, where the use of niacin has the potential for use in hydroponic production systems. Its combined use with thiamine increases this potential, with a synergistic effect between the compounds being verified.

RESUMO Tecnologias outrora aplicadas exclusivamente em sistemas convencionais, têm maximizado os ganhos em sistemas hidropônicos, porém, necessitando ainda de informações para uma adequada utilização. Assim, o estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da aplicação foliar de tiamina e niacina sobre o crescimento e atividades de troca gasosa em duas cultivares de alface em sistema hidropônico de fluxo e refluxo. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado (DIC), com quatro tratamentos e oito repetições. Os tratamentos foram: T1 - controle; T2 - tiamina em concentração de 200 mg L-1; T3 - niacina em concentração de 200 mg L-1; T4 - tiamina e niacina combinadas, em concentração de 100 mg L-1 de cada vitamina. Cada parcela experimental foi constituída por um vaso, contendo uma muda de alface. A aplicação conjunta de tiamina e niacina elevou as trocas gasosas das plantas de alface, aumentando em cerca de 30% a massa fresca, em relação ao controle, para ambas as cultivares, seguida pela aplicação isolada de niacina. Para a tiamina, a aplicação de forma isolada não resultou em alterações significativas. As vitaminas afetam a morfofisiologia da alface, onde o uso da niacina tem potencial para uso em sistemas de produção hidropônicos, sendo esse potencial aumentado pelo seu uso conjunto com a tiamina, verificando-se um efeito sinérgico entre os compostos.

RESUMO Síndrome pós-polio (SPP) é uma condição que afeta sobreviventes da poliomielite aguda (PAA), anos após a recuperação de um ataque agudo inicial do vírus. Na maioria das vezes, os sobreviventes da polio começam a apresentar nova paresia gradual nos músculos que foram previamente afetados pela infecção. A incidência real de doenças cardiovasculares (DCV) em indivíduos que sofrem de SPP não é conhecida. Entretanto, há indícios para suspeitar de que sujeitos com SPP podem estar em maior risco. Método Realizou-se uma busca de artigos nas bases de dados: Bireme, Scielo e Pubmed, utilizando as seguintes palavras-chave: síndrome pós-poliomielite, função cardiorrespiratória e reabilitação, nos idiomas Inglês, Francês e Espanhol. Embora tenhamos selecionado um número expressivo de artigos, somente foram considerados os duplo-cegos, randomizados-controlados, além de consensos. Resultados e Discussão Certas características da SPP, tais como fadiga muscular, paresia, dor muscular e/ou articulares podem resultar em descondicionamento por inatividade física, além de obesidade e dislipidemia. Dificuldades respiratórias são comuns e podem resultar em hipoxemia. Conclusão Somente quando avaliados e tratados em tempo hábil, alguns pacientes são capazes de obter os benefícios do uso dos músculos respiratórios auxiliares em termos de qualidade de vida.

ABSTRACT Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a condition that affects polio survivors years after recovery from an initial acute attack of the poliomyelitis virus. Most often, polio survivors experience a gradual new weakening in muscles that were previously affected by the polio infection. The actual incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in individuals suffering from PPS is not known. However, there is a reason to suspect that individuals with PPS might be at increased risk. Method A search for papers was made in the databases Bireme, Scielo and Pubmed with the following keywords: post polio syndrome, cardiorespiratory and rehabilitation in English, French and Spanish languages. Although we targeted only seek current studies on the topic in question, only the relevant (double-blind, randomized-controlled and consensus articles) were considered. Results and Discussion Certain features of PPS such as generalized fatigue, generalized and specific muscle weakness, joint and/or muscle pain may result in physical inactivity deconditioning obesity and dyslipidemia. Respiratory difficulties are common and may result in hypoxemia. Conclusion Only when evaluated and treated promptly, somE patients can obtain the full benefits of the use of respiratory muscles aids as far as quality of life is concerned.

Nas últimas décadas, com o advento do computador, Internet e todo aparato tecnológico, as relações humanas se veem intermediadas por estes, o que caracteriza algo atual, denominado de cibercultura. Esta hoje influencia todas as áreas de atuação e a saúde pública não pode ficar de fora, entendendo esta e seus benefícios para seu desenvolvimento. Precisamos estar atentos a essas mudanças e trazê-las do plano teórico para o plano prático, implementando não somente políticas públicas de saúde que levem em conta o sócio-virtual, mas também, enquanto profissionais, nos atualizarmos sobre as novas formas de comunicação, interação, metodologia de pesquisa, elaboração de instrumentos, abordagens de amostragem e todos os demais fenômenos decorrentes da cibercultura que trabalharão em parceria com a saúde pública.

Cyberculture thus represents a new form of interface between people. And it is precisely "through" and "by means of" social relations that individuals acquire skills and communication techniques. The forms and the means of the relationship alters, but the ends remain unchanged, namely to be in contact with other humans. In recent decades, with the advent of computers, the Internet and all the technological apparatus, human relationships are dependent on them, which is the modern so-called cyberculture. This now affects all areas of activity, and public health cannot be left behind, taking advantage of it and its benefits for its development. It is necessary to keep abreast of these changes and raise them from the theoretical to the practical plane, not only implementing public health policies but also taking the socio-virtual aspects into consideration. It is also necessary for the professionals involved to be updated on new forms of communication, interaction, research methodology, preparation of instruments, sampling approaches and all other phenomena arising from cyberculture that will work in partnership with public health.

Among the osteotomies performed in orthognathic surgery, the sagittal osteotomy of the mandibular ramus (SOMR) is the most common, allowing a great range of movements and stable internal fixation (SIF), therefore eliminating the need of maxillomandibular block in the postoperative period. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical resistance of three national systems used for SIF in SOMR in sheep mandibles. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was performed in 30 sheep hemi-mandibles randomly divided into 3 experimental groups, each containing 10 hemi-mandibles. The samples were measured to avoid discrepancies and then subjected to SOMR with 5-mm advancement. In group I, 2.0x12 mm screws were used for fixation, inserted in an inverted "L" pattern (inverted "L" group). In group II, fixation was performed with two 2.0x12 mm screws, positioned in a linear pattern and a 4-hole straight miniplate and four 2.0x6.0 mm monocortical screws (hybrid group). In group III, fixation was performed with two 4-hole straight miniplates and eight 2.0x6.0 mm monocortical screws (mini plate group). All materials used for SIF were supplied by Osteosin - SIN. The hemimandibles were subjected to vertical linear load test by Kratos K2000MP mechanical testing unit for loading registration and displacement. RESULTS: All groups showed similar resistance during mechanical test for loading and displacement, with no statistically significant differences between groups according to analysis of variance. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that the three techniques of fixation are equally effective for clinical fixation of SOMR.

Despite the different orthodontic approaches to Class II subdivision malocclusions one has also to consider the skeletal components before undertaking any treatment protocol. Significant involvement of the skeletal structures may require a combined surgical orthodontic treatment, which has remained stable for more than four years, as illustrated in this case report.

A erupção ectópica e a impacção de caninos superiores são problemas bastante comuns na população. A excelência do tratamento ortodôntico traduz-se na correção da oclusão, harmonia do sorriso, saúde periodontal e estabilidade pós-tratamento. Para obtermos tais condições, a manutenção dos caninos é fundamental. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar radiograficamente a localização de caninos superiores não irrompidos utilizando-se radiografias panorâmicas. Foram selecionadas setenta radiografias panorâmicas de pacientes com impacção uni ou bilateral de caninos, candidatos a tratamento cirúrgico. Para determinação da posição espacial dos caninos superiores não irrompidos foram selecionados métodos descritos na literatura e uma avaliação proposta neste trabalho. A localização de caninos não irrompidos é fundamental para estabelecer o plano de tratamento, auxiliando no acesso cirúrgico e na direção das forças ortodônticas a serem aplicadas no dente impactado. Os pacientes que tiveram suas radiografias utilizadas neste estudo serão tratados pelas disciplinas de Ortodontia e Cirurgia, com exodontia do canino ou exposição cirúrgica para colagem do dispositivo de tracionamento associada ao tratamento ortodôntico corretivo.

Ectopic eruption and the impaction of upper canines are problems quite commonly presented by the population. An excellent orthodontic treatment encompasses occlusal correction, smile harmony, periodontal health and posttreatment stability. Such conditions can be obtained upon the due maintenance of the canines, therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the radiographic localization of non-erupted upper canines using panoramic radiographs. In this study, seventy panoramic radiographs of patients presented with uni or bilateral canine impaction, applying for surgical treatment, were selected. Methods described in the literature and an evaluation proposed in this work were chosen to determine the spatial position for non-erupted upper canines. The localization of non-erupted canines is fundamental to establish the treatment plan, aiding in the surgical access and in the direction of orthodontic forces to be applied on the impacted tooth. The patients whose radiographs were utilized in this study will be treated at the Orthodontics and Surgery Departments, by means of surgeries for canine exodontics or surgical exposure for the bonding of a wire traction device, associated with corrective orthodontic treatment.
