Resumo: Objetivo O estudo analisou o potencial uso dos grupos funcionais do fitoplâncton como bioindicador ambiental em ecossistemas aquáticos do semiárido brasileiro. Métodos Usando dados coletados de uma lagoa natural e dois reservatórios ao longo de cinco anos, avaliamos a relação entre grupos funcionais e condições ambientais por meio de uma abordagem multivariada. O índice Q foi aplicado para avaliar o estado ecológico desses ecossistemas. Resultados Em Panati, uma lagoa temporária e natural, a dessecação parcial do habitat e presença de macrófitas aquáticas refletiram nas menores concentrações de nutrientes e na composição do fitoplâncton, com alta biomassa de Chlorophyceae cocóides, diatomáceas e desmídias (grupos funcionais J, MP e N, respectivamente). Os reservatórios Taperoá e Soledade apresentaram alta contribuição de cianobactérias, no entanto a biomassa e a contribuição de cianobactérias em Taperoá (SN, S1) foram menores do que em Soledade. Nesse reservatório, as cianobactérias foram mais abundantes, alternando em dominância (LO, M, LM, SN, S1). De acordo com as tendências reveladas pela análise de redundância (RDA), os principais fatores abióticos atuantes sobre a estrutura dos grupos funcionais do fitoplâncton foram o pH, os nutrientes e a disponibilidade de luz. Como esperado, a composição do fitoplâncton influenciou diretamente o resultado do índice Q, mostrando condições ruins a toleráveis em Soledade, médias a boas em Taperoá e boas a excelentes em Panati. Conclusões O índice Q mostrou-se uma boa ferramenta para avaliar a qualidade da água e o estado ecológico de ecossistemas aquáticos do semiárido brasileiro, refletindo a influência de mecanismos naturais de controle sobre o florescimento de cianobactérias prejudiciais em ecossistemas temporários.

Abstract: Aim The study analyzed the potential use of the phytoplankton functional groups as an environmental bioindicator in aquatic ecosystems of Brazilian semiarid region. Methods Using data collected over five years of a natural lagoon and two reservoirs, we evaluate the relationship between functional groups and environmental conditions through the multivariate approach. The Q index was applied to assess ecological status in these ecosystems. Results In Panati, the temporary and natural lagoon, the partial habitat desiccation and presence of macrophytes reflected in the less nutrients concentrations and phytoplankton composition, with high biomass of coccoids Chlorophyceae, diatoms and desmids (functional groups J, MP and N, respectively). Taperoá and Soledade reservoirs presented high cyanobacteria contribution, however the biomass and contribution of cyanobacteria in Taperoá (SN, S1) were lower than in Soledade. In this reservoir, cyanobacteria were more abundant, alternating in dominance (LO, M, LM, SN, S1). According to tendencies revealed by Redundancy Analysis (RDA), the main driving abiotic factors on the phytoplankton functional groups were pH, nutrients and light availability. As expected, phytoplankton composition directly influenced the Q index result, showing mostly bad to tolerable conditions in Soledade, medium to good in Taperoá and good to excellent in Panati. Conclusions The Q index was a good tool to assess the water quality and ecological status in aquatic ecosystems from the Brazilian semiarid region, reflecting the influence of natural control mechanisms on the harmful cyanobacteria blooms in temporary ecosystems.

RESUMO O presente trabalho tem como objetivo descrever o delineamento amostral e os métodos utilizados na série “Flora de algas perifíticas da bacia do baixo rio Doce, após a passagem de rejeitos de minério, Estado do Espírito Santo, Brasil”. Esta série apresentará a biodiversidade de algas perifíticas registradas durante o Programa de Monitoramento da Biodiversidade Aquática, Área Ambiental I, realizado na bacia do baixo rio Doce três anos após a passagem do rejeito de minério da barragem de Fundão, Mariana, Estado de Minas Gerais. Foram coletadas mensalmente mensalmente, entre outubro/2018 e fevereiro/2020, amostras da comunidade perifítica em cinco estações amostrais em ambientes lóticos e sete em ambientes lênticos da bacia. Essas amostras foram fixadas e os táxons serão identificados e descritos, seguindo métodos específicos. Esses táxons serão apresentados em fascículos sequenciais, divididos de acordo com sua classificação taxonômica e morfológica. Mais de 900 táxons foram registrados no levantamento. Este é o primeiro trabalho taxonômico sobre algas continentais realizado na bacia do baixo rio Doce.

ABSTRACT The present work aims to describe the sampling design and the methods used in the series “Periphytic algal flora of the Lower Doce River basin (Espírito Santo State, Brazil) after ore tailings flow”. This series will present the biodiversity of periphytic algae registered during the Aquatic Biodiversity Monitoring Program, Environmental Area I, carried out in the Lower Doce River basin three years after the passage of the ore tailings from Fundão dam (Mariana, Minas Gerais). Samples from the periphytic community were collected monthly, between October/2018 and February/2020, at five sampling stations in lotic environments and seven in lentic environments of the basin. These samples were fixed and the taxa will be identified and described, following specific methods. These taxa will be presented in sequential fascicles, split according to their taxonomic and morphological classification. More than 900 taxa have been recorded in this survey. This is the first taxonomic study about inland algae carried out in the Lower Doce River basin.

ABSTRACT Knowledge of algal and cyanobacterial diversity of phytotelmata remains poorly-known, especially for bromeliads from different vegetation formations. We investigated the microalgae communities of four species of tank bromeliads from different vegetation formations in Bahia State, Northeast Brazil, highlighting the composition, richness and diversity of taxa. Sampling of water stored in bromeliads was carried out quarterly between 2014 and 2016, and abiotic variables and morphometric attributes of bromeliads were measured. A total of 89 taxa of algae and cyanobacteria were recorded for the four bromeliad species studied. The microalgae communities of the phytotelmata varied among vegetation formations, with one tank bromeliad, Alcantarea nahoumii, with more complex architecture (higher number of leaves and thus more cavities), being distinguished by its high species richness (73 taxa). The bromeliads exhibited little similarity in species composition, with only one species (Phacus polytrophos) occurring in all four species. Throughout the entire sampling period, classes with higher species richness, especially due to A. nahoumii, were Zygnematophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae, which accounted for about 80 % of all species inventoried. Our results contribute to the knowledge of microalga communities of bromeliad phytotelmata in Brazil with regard to species richness and composition, as well as significant environmental characteristics.

Resumo: Objetivo Este estudo avaliou as mudanças temporais da estrutura do fitoplâncton e do epifíton e suas relações com os fatores limnológicos em um reservatório urbano hipereutrófico (Reservatório Rasgão, Brasil). Métodos Nós coletamos amostras de água e fitoplâncton em diferentes profundidades em dois locais (barragem e próximo da entrada do tributário) no verão e inverno de 2010. O epifíton em Salvinia spp. foi amostrado somente no local próximo da entrada do tributário. Nós determinamos as variáveis limnológicas e os atributos estruturais (composição de espécies, densidade, biovolume, espécies descritoras, diversidade) para ambas as comunidades. Resultados A densidade do fitoplâncton e a densidade e o biovolume do epifíton foram maiores no inverno (estação seca), no qual ocorreu as maiores concentrações de nutrientes e menor vazão. Chlorophyceae foi dominante no fitoplâncton em ambos os períodos e Cyanobacteria foi a segunda classe mais abundante no inverno. No epifíton, Bacillariophyceae foi dominante no verão e Cyanobacteria no inverno. O aumento da disponibilidade de luz e da vazão pode ter favorecido a alta riqueza e diversidade de espécies no verão. Conclusão As mudanças temporais na estrutura do fitoplâncton e do epifíton em Salvinia foram mais relacionadas com o aumento na disponibilidade de nutrientes (nitrogênio e fósforo) e às variações na vazão em um reservatório hipereutrófico.

Abstract: Aim This study evaluated the temporal changes of phytoplankton and epiphyton structure and their relationships with limnological factors in an urban hypereutrophic reservoir (Rasgão Reservoir, Brazil). Methods We collected water sample and phytoplankton in different depths at two sites (dam and near tributary input) in summer and winter 2010. Epiphyton on Salvinia spp. was sampled only at site near the tributary input. We determined limnological variables and structural attributes (species composition, density, biovolume, descriptors species, diversity) for both communities. Results Phytoplankton density and epiphyton density and biovolume were higher in the winter (dry season), which occurred the higher nutrient concentrations and lower water flow. Chlorophyceae was dominant in the phytoplankton in both period and Cyanobacteria was the second most abundant class in the winter. In the epiphyton, Bacillariophyceae was dominant in the summer and Cyanobacteria in the winter. The increase in light availability and water flow can have provided high species richness and diversity in the summer. Conclusion Temporal changes in the structure of phytoplankton and epiphyton on Salvinia were more related to increased nutrients availability (nitrogen and phosphorus) and flow variations in a hypereutrophic reservoir.

Introduction Envenomation by scorpion stings is a major public health problem in numerous tropical countries because of its frequent incidence and potential severity. Approximately 1,900 species of scorpions are known in the world, and at least 130 of these have been described in Brazil. Methods This work reports on 3 child deaths caused by Tityus stigmurus stings and characterizes epidemiological and clinical surveys on pediatric cases of scorpionism recorded in the Centro de Assistência Toxicológica de Pernambuco (Ceatox-PE). Results Scorpion stings accounted for more than 60% of all cases recorded for venomous animals. The children were from 37 cities of the Pernambuco state and accounted for 28.8% of the victims treated for scorpion stings, with the highest incidence in the metropolitan area of Recife. Stings occurred throughout the year and slightly increased during the rainy season. Independent of the elapsed time for a prognosis, most cases showed mild symptoms. Three moderate cases that resulted in death featured cardiogenic shock and/or pulmonary edema or severe neurological symptoms. For the first time, death attributed to T. stigmurus was confirmed by the presence of the scorpion. Conclusions These results suggest that scorpionism in Pernambuco is a public health problem that needs to be monitored carefully throughout the year by the government.

Existem poucas publicações de acidentes ofídicos causados pela espécie Philodryas olfersii. Relatamos aqui o primeiro caso identificado no Centro de Assistência Toxicológica do Hospital da Restauração, Recife, Estado de Pernambuco. A descrição do caso foi realizada com base nos protocolos médicos, entrevista com o paciente e identificação do animal causador do acidente. O paciente apresentou dor, calor, eritema, edema e equimose, sem outras alterações laboratoriais ou distúrbios da coagulação. O tratamento executado mediante a administração de oito ampolas de soro antibotrópico apresentou reações alergênicas pós-administração. A relevância dos acidentes por serpentes opistóglifas deve ser reconsiderada na pesquisa e nos centros de tratamento especializados.

Few papers have been published on snake bites caused by Philodryas olfersii. We report here the first case identified at the Centro de Assistência Toxicológica do Hospital da Restauração, Recife, State of Pernambuco. This case was described based on medical protocols, interviewing the patient and identifying the animal that caused the bite. The patient presented pain, heat, erythema, edema and ecchymosis, without other laboratory abnormalities or coagulation disorders. The treatment consisted of administration of eight ampoules of antibothropic serum, and post-administration allergenic reactions were observed. The importance of bites by opistoglyph snakes needs to be reconsidered in research and at specialized treatment centers.

É descrito um envenenamento pela ingestão de vísceras de um baiacu-pintado (Sphoeroides testudineus) por uma criança de dois anos, que apresentou sudorese fria, fraqueza muscular progressiva, parada cardiorrespiratória e morte. São discutidos os riscos do consumo da carne e vísceras de baiacus, fato comum em certas regiões do Brasil.

A case of poisoning resulting from ingestion of viscera from a spotted puffer fish (Sphoeroides testudineus) by a two-year-old child is described. The child presented cold sweating, progressive muscle weakness, cardiorespiratory arrest and death. The risks of consuming the meat and viscera of puffer fish, which is a common occurrence in certain regions of Brazil, are discussed.

Apresentamos neste trabalho os primeiros relatos de acidente escorpiônico causado pela espécie Tityus pusillus (Buthidae). Os acidentes ocorreram no ambiente doméstico, na área rural situada nas cidades de Paudalho e São Lourenço da Mata, Pernambuco, Brasil. Os dois casos descritos, uma criança e uma mulher grávida, foram classificados como leve e moderado, respectivamente. Os sintomas clínicos apresentados foram distúrbios locais (dor e parestesia) e distúrbios sistêmicos (calafrios, tontura, cefaléia e vômito). Esses registros permitem incluir Tityus pusillus como uma espécie de importância médica no Brasil.

This paper presents the first reports on scorpion accidents caused by Tityus pusillus (Buthidae). The accidents took place within the home environment, in rural areas located in the municipalities of Paudalho and São Lourenço da Mata, Pernambuco, Brazil. The two cases described (a child and a pregnant woman) were classified as mild and moderate, respectively. The clinical symptoms presented were local disorders (pain and paresthesia) and systemic disorders (chills, dizziness, headache and vomiting). These records make it possible to including Tityus pusillus as a species of medical importance in Brazil.
