The copper alloy UNS-C27200 is a binary brass, composed of 38wt%Zn, beeing one of the most used in the industry. The union of Cu-Zn alloys by conventional welding by fusion in thin plates presents several challenges. The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process performs the union of two, or more materials, through a rotating tool that travels throughout the welding region. One the great advantages of FSW is working below the melting point of the material, which reduces the change in the microstructure and properties of the material, when compared to conventional welding processes. Due to the lack of research on FSW process in lap brass joints with thin thicknesses, the present work aims to expand these studies in order to contribute to future research. Eight conditions were evaluated, varying rotation and welding speed. In the best results by visual inspection, analyzes of microstructure, temperature, microhardness and mechanical strength were performed. The better welding results were obtained with ω=1050 rpm and ν=20 mm/min. There was reduction of approximately 50% between Stir Zone and Base metal. The mechanical strength was affected by the pin hole resulting from the process. The microstructure revealed a homogeneous mixture in the stir zone and no defects were detected.

The present work describes the chemical constituents of Odontadenia lutea (Vell.) Markgr. leaves and the toxicities of its extract and fractions against Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Chromatographic procedures of the ethanolic extract resulted in the identification of the triterpene β-amyrin, the flavonoid rutin, two fatty acids palmitic and linolenic, and one glyceroglycolipid 3-O-(9,12,15-octadecatrienoyl)-glyceryl-β-D-galactopyranoside, which are known compounds, but they are described for the first time in the Odontadenia genus. The known triterpenes lupeol and α-amyrin were also identified. Structural identification of the compounds was performed by analysis of IR, ESI-MS, and 1D and 2D NMR spectra. The toxicity of its extract and fractions from O. lutea leaves was tested against leaf-cutting ants Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel by employing ingestion bioassay procedures. The hexane fraction (2 mg mL-1) decreases the average survival of ants from sixteen to six days, causing 98% mortality on the 14th day and 100% at the end of the experiment.

Abstract The methodologies for designing pile foundations can be complex since the simultaneous interactions among the block, piles and surrounding soil should be taken into account. Therefore, in addition to the discussions on construction, instrumentation, testing and simulation of a defective pile, this paper discusses the practical issues arising from the observed numerical using three-dimensional finite elements and experimental studies. The main issues discussed in this paper refer to as the decrease in load capacity of bored instrumented piles when subjected to a structural defect. It was observed in the results that given the presence of the defect, the failure load of the system has decreased from 190 kN to 110 kN, i.e. around 40% reduction of the intact reference value. Using the data obtained by numerical analysis, laboratory test, and field application, it was possible that the results were satisfactory and reasonable, enhancing our understanding of this complex foundation system’s behavior, especially in the presence of a defective pile.

ABSTRACT Ammonium (NH4 +) toxicity in yellow passionfruit (Passiflora edulis Sims f. flavicarpa O. Deg.) may be mitigated by Si application. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction effect of Si and high level of NH4 + on yellow passionfruit seedlings nutrition, physiology, growth, and DM production. Pots were filled with pinus bark and nutrition solution was applied. Treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design, with five replicates, in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme: two ratios of NH4 + and nitrate, NO3 + (40/60%, without high level of NH4 +; and 75/25%, with high level of NH4 +) at N concentration of 13 mmol N L-1, in the absence and presence of Si (2.0 mmol L-1). Sixty days after seedling transplant it was evaluated: N, Si, K, Ca and Mg root and shoots accumulation, leaf green color index (GCI), electrolyte leakage index (ELI), intracellular CO2 concentration (Ci), transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (gs), net photosynthesis rate (Pn), stem diameter, leaf area, root length, N use efficiency (NUE) and root and shoot DM content. Plants cultivated with Si had 19.1% and 16.3% lower Tr and gs, respectively, regardless NH4 + concentration. Moreover, Ci and Pn were 13.2% and 16.4%, respectively, higher in plants that received Si. Plants cultivated under high NH4 + concentrations, with Si application had 17% bigger stem diameter and 15.4% bigger root length than plants without Si application. Si application in yellow passionfruit seedlings cultivated with high level of NH4 + increased accumulation and NUE, root length, root DM, and GCI. In addition, Si application reduced ELI, which resulted in higher stem diameter. These results prove that Si application mitigates NH4 + toxicity in yellow passionfruit seedlings

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The damage caused by the soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines, not only limits expansion of the soybean (Glycine Max) crop but also reduces the yield of soybeans in Brazil. Knowledge of the spatial distribution of this pathogen is needed in order to establish management measures. This study was conducted in Florínea County, São Paulo, Brazil, in a commercial soybean field, cultivar BRS133, previously known to be infected with H. glycines. In order to see the pattern of the spectral response of plants attacked by the phytonematode, field spectroradiometry measurements in the visible and near infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum were obtained 112 days after sowing. At the same time, soil samples were taken to the "Laboratório de Nematologia do Departamento de Fitossanidade da Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho, Campus de Jaboticabal", where they were processed and where the population density of the nematode was determined. The spectroradiometric measurements were transformed to the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) that was related to population density of the nematode, to fresh biomass and to pods per plant. It was observed that different population densities are directly related to the spectral response of the plants expressed by NDVI values.
