Resumo Introdução A complexidade anatômica do forame jugular torna a realização de procedimentos cirúrgicos nessa região delicada e difícil. Devido aos avanços obtidos nas técnicas cirúrgicas, as abordagens do forame jugular têm sido feitas com maior frequência, o que requer uma melhoria correspondente no conhecimento de sua anatomia. Objetivo Estudar a anatomia do forame jugular, da veia jugular interna e dos nervos glossofaríngeo, vago e acessório, assim como as relações anatômicas entre estas estruturas na região do forame jugular e no espaço parafaríngeo. Método Foram examinados 60 lados de 30 cadáveres frescos algumas horas após a morte. Os diâmetros e suas relações anatômicas foram analisados. Resultados Os diâmetros do forame jugular e da veia jugular interna foram maiores no lado direito na maioria dos espécimes estudados. O seio petroso inferior terminava na veia jugular interna até 40 mm abaixo do forame jugular, em 5% dos casos. O nervo glossofaríngeo exibiu uma relação íntima anatômica com o músculo estiloglosso após a sua saída do crânio e o nervo vago exibiu uma relação semelhante com o nervo hipoglosso. O nervo acessório passou em torno da veia jugular interna via sua parede anterior em 71,7% dos cadáveres. Conclusão Foram encontradas variações anatômicas nas dimensões do forame jugular e da veia jugular interna, que apresentaram tamanhos maiores à direita na maioria dos espécimes estudados; variações também ocorreram na trajetória e nas relações anatômicas dos nervos. O seio petroso pode se unir à veia jugular interna abaixo do forame.

Abstract Introduction The anatomical complexity of the jugular foramen makes surgical procedures in this region delicate and difficult. Due to the advances in surgical techniques, approaches to the jugular foramen became more frequent, requiring improvement of the knowledge of this region anatomy. Objective To study the anatomy of the jugular foramen, internal jugular vein and glossopharyngeal, vagus and accessory nerves, and to identify the anatomical relationships among these structures in the jugular foramen region and lateral-pharyngeal space. Methods A total of 60 sides of 30 non-embalmed cadavers were examined few hours after death. The diameters of the jugular foramen and its anatomical relationships were analyzed. Results The diameters of the jugular foramen and internal jugular vein were greater on the right side in most studied specimens. The inferior petrosal sinus ended in the internal jugular vein up to 40 mm below the jugular foramen; in 5% of cases. The glossopharyngeal nerve exhibited an intimate anatomical relationship with the styloglossus muscle after exiting the skull, and the vagal nerve had a similar relationship with the hypoglossal nerve. The accessory nerve passed around the internal jugular vein via its anterior wall in 71.7% of cadavers. Conclusion Anatomical variations were found in the dimensions of the jugular foramen and the internal jugular vein, which were larger in size on the right side of most studied bodies; variations also occurred in the trajectory and anatomical relationships of the nerves. The petrosal sinus can join the internal jugular vein below the foramen.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the participation frequency and competitive performance of Campolina and Mangalarga Marchador horses in national shows concerning marcha type, sex, and age. To that end, the trial results of national horse shows between 2007 and 2017, comprising 1,781 Campolina and 5,239 Mangalarga Marchador animals, were extracted from the databases of the breeders’ associations of each breed. The results regarding participation frequency in these events and the performance achieved by horses were grouped by breed, marcha type, sex, and age group and then subjected to frequency distribution tests. In both breeds, most animals attended only one national show. However, when the specimens were separated by marcha type, sex, and age, it was observed that 54.39% of marcha batida Campolina males competed twice, with greater participation of adult horses (41.41%) than of young ones (22.22%). For Mangalarga Marchador, irrespective of gait type, the proportion of adult horses (67.22%) that competed was higher than that of young ones (25.63%). For marcha picada competitors, the proportion between young (13.97%) and adult (81.91%) was even higher. It was concluded that, over their competitive careers, most horses of either breed attended only one national show, that marcha picada animals usually compete only when adults, and that marcha batida females compete more often when young. In addition, the age group in which competitors achieve their best performances varies according to the specimen.

RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar se a projeção lateral da glândula tireoide, chamada tubérculo de Zuckerkandl (TZ), pode auxiliar o cirurgião na identificação do nervo laríngeo inferior durante a tireoidectomia convencional aberta. Métodos: estudo prospectivo de 51 pacientes submetidos à tireoidectomia, com um total de 100 lobos tireoidianos ressecados, e observação da presença ou não do TZ em dimensões suficientes para ser identificado sem magnificação de imagem, suas dimensões de base e altura, sua localização na glândula e sua relação anatômica com o nervo laríngeo inferior. Resultados: o TZ estava presente em 68 dos 100 lobos de tireoide analisados (68%). A dimensão média da base foi 6,7mm no lado direito e 7,1mm no lado esquerdo, e a altura média foi 5,7mm no lado direito e 6,1mm no lado esquerdo. Na maioria dos lobos estudados, o tubérculo tinha altura mínima de 5mm (55,9%) sem diferença significativa entre o lobo direito e esquerdo da glândula tireoide. Durante a cirurgia, 100% dos TZ identificados estavam anteriores ao nervo laríngeo inferior, imediatamente abaixo da entrada do nervo na laringe. Conclusão: o TZ é bastante frequente e em dimensões suficientes para ser usado como referência anatômica na localização intraoperatória do nervo laríngeo inferior, próximo à sua entrada na laringe, junto com as demais referências anatômicas.

ABSTRACT Objective: to evaluate whether the lateral projection of the thyroid gland, called Zuckerkandl's tubercle (ZT), can assist the surgeon in identifying the inferior laryngeal nerve during conventional open thyroidectomy. Methods: we conducted a prospective study with 51 patients submitted to thyroidectomy, with a total of 100 resected thyroid lobes, and observed the presence or absence of ZT in sufficient dimensions to be identified without image magnification, its base and height, its location in the gland, and its anatomical relationship with the inferior laryngeal nerve. Results: ZT was present in 68 of the 100 thyroid lobes analyzed (68%). The mean base was 6.7mm on the right side and 7.1mm on the left side, and the average height was 5.7mm on the right side and 6.1mm on the left side. In most of the lobes studied, the tubercle had a minimum height of 5mm (55.9%), with no significant difference between the right and left lobes of the thyroid gland. During surgery, 100% of the identified ZTs were anterior to the inferior laryngeal nerve, just below the nerve entry in the larynx. Conclusion: the ZT is a quite frequent entity and large enough to serve as an intraoperative anatomical reference for the inferior laryngeal nerve, next to its entry in the larynx, along with other anatomical references.

RESUMO A doença de Alzheimer é um processo neurodegenerativo e progressivo que afeta, negativamente, a qualidade de vida do paciente e de seus familiares. Objetivo: Comparar a cognição, nível de atividade física capacidade funcional de idosos no estágio leve da doença de Alzheimer e de idosos sem demência. Métodos: Participaram deste estudo 24 idosos no estágio leve da doença de Alzheimer (média de idade = 76,9 ± 5.3 anos) e 30 idosos sem demência (média de idade = 74,1 ± 5,6 anos). Foram utilizados os seguintes instrumentos de avaliação cognitiva: MEEM, Bateria de Avaliação Frontal, Teste do Desenho do Relógio, Blocos de Corsi e Pares Verbais Associados. Além disso, foi realizado o exame eletroencefalográfico P300 para avaliar o tempo de processamento de informação. Para quantificar o nível de atividade física foi utilizado o Questionário Baecke Modificado para Idosos e o pedômetro, que foi utilizado por 7 dias consecutivos. A funcionalidade foi avaliada através da escala Direct Assessment of Functional Status-Revised, juntamente com testes funcionais que avaliaram os componentes da capacidade funcional. Resultados: Foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os grupos para o nível de atividade física e funcionalidade motora, com exceção da avaliação da flexibilidade. Conclusão: Idosos com doença de Alzheimer apresentam prejuízos cognitivos, funcionais e de nível de atividade física, os quais encontram-se alterados nos estágios iniciais da doença.

ABSTRACT Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a progressive degenerative disorder that negatively affects quality of life of patients and family members. Objective: The aim of this study is to compare the cognition, level of physical activity and functioning of elderly individuals with mild AD and those without dementia. Methods: The study comprised 24 elderly with mild AD (mean age = 76.9 ± 5.3 years) and 30 elderly without dementia (mean age = 74.1 ± 5.6 years). The following instruments were applied to evaluate cognitive functions: MMSE; Frontal Assessment Battery; Clock Drawing Test; Corsi Blocks, and Verbal Paired Associates. Event-related potential P300 was used to evaluate cognitive processing. The Modified Baecke Questionnaire For Older Adults was applied to evaluate the level of physical activity together with use of a pedometer for 7 consecutive days. For the evaluation of the functioning, the Direct Assessment of Functional Status-Revised scale and functional tests were used. Results: There was a significant difference between the groups in level of physical activity and functioning, except on the test evaluating flexibility. Conclusion: Elderly with AD had cognitive, functional and physical activity deficits which can manifest even in the early stages of the disease.

Resumo A Astronomia é uma das mais antigas ciências naturais, tendo sido desenvolvida por diferentes civilizações e com distintos propósitos nos últimos milênios. No Brasil, vários tópicos astronômicos permeiam a educação básica, tanto em nível fundamental quanto médio. Somado a isso, nas últimas décadas vem crescendo o número de pesquisas e o interesse pela divulgação científica e pelo ensino em espaços não-formais de educação. As atividades educacionais e a divulgação científica nesse contexto, se bem exploradas, podem contribuir para a socialização e a popularização de conhecimentos sobre Astronomia. Além disso, podem servir de suporte à formação de professores e alunos. Dessa forma, o debate sobre o tema é importante e deve ser instigado tanto no âmbito não acadêmico quanto no âmbito da formação docente e discente. Frente a isso, um projeto de extensão da Coordenadoria de Física (CODAFIS) do Instituto Federal de Minas Gerais - Campus Ouro Preto (IFMG-OP) foi iniciado em 2011, oferecendo observações e atividades sobre Astronomia para a população local e das cidades vizinhas. Desde então, mais de 7.000 pessoas já participaram das ações, demonstrando o imenso potencial do tema. As discussões sobre Astronomia levam normalmente a discussões sobre Física, quando conceitos e vários outros assuntos podem ser tratados de forma aplicada, fomentando o interesse por esses temas. No entanto, atividades mal elaboradas ou mal desenvolvidas podem gerar reações adversas no público, causando resistência com relação ao assunto. Assim, esse artigo tem como objetivo principal identificar elementos que podem culminar com a não efetividade das atividades de observação. Além disso, busca-se identificar parâmetros que sejam determinantes para o êxito das ações, além de compartilhar conhecimentos empíricos obtidos com o desenvolvimento do projeto e encorajar grupos, acadêmicos ou não, a desenvolverem atividades astronômicas similares em ambientes formais e não-formais de ensino e também em diferentes regiões do país.

Abstract Astronomy is one of the oldest natural sciences and have been developed by different civilizations and with different purposes in the last millennia. In Brazil, several astronomical topics are teached in basic education, both at the fundamental and medium levels. In addition, the number of researches and activities about scientific dissemination and teaching in non-formal places is increasing. Educational activities and scientific dissemination in this context, if well done, can contribute to the socialization and popularization of astronomy knowledge. Besides that, they can help to improve the knowledge of teachers and students. In this way, the debate on the subject is important and should be instigated both in the non-academic context and in the scope of teacher and student training. In this way, a practical project of the Physics Department (CODAFIS) of the Federal Institute of Minas Gerais - Campus Ouro Preto (IFMG-OP) was started in 2011, offering observations and activities on Astronomy for the local population and neighboring cities. Since then, more than 7,000 people have attended the actions, which shows the large potential of the theme. Astronomy discussions naturally lead to Physics, when concepts and many other subjects can be treated in an applied way. In general, people are more interested in activities in this context than in traditional teaching environments. However, poorly designed or poorly developed activities can generate adverse reactions in the public, leading to dislike on the subject. Thus, this article's main objective is to identify elements that can culminate with the non-effectiveness of the observation activities. In addition, it seeks to identify parameters that are determinant for the success of the actions, in addition to sharing empirical knowledge obtained with the development of the project and to encourage groups, academic or otherwise, to develop similar astronomical activities in formal and non-formal educational environments and also in different regions of the country.

El objetivo de esta investigación fue investigar las relaciones entre funciones ejecutivas y capacidad funcional y determinar los predictores motores de la deficiencia de las funciones ejecutivas en ancianos con enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA). 24 ancianos con EA fueron evaluados para estimar las funciones ejecutivas y los predictores motores. Se utilizó el análisis estadístico descriptivo, correlación de Pearson y regresión lineal múltiple. Las funciones ejecutivas se relacionaron con la flexibilidad (r = 0.54), equilibrio (r = 0.48), agilidad y movilidad (r = -0.41). El análisis de regresión apuntó equilibrio y flexibilidad como predictores motores de la deficiencia de las funciones ejecutivas. El prejuicio del equilibrio y la flexibilidad pueden predecir los prejuicios en funciones ejecutivas de ancianos con EA.

The objective of this paper was investigate the relationship between executive function and functional capacity and determine predictors engines for decline of executive functions in elderly patients with AD. A total of 24 elderly patients with EA were evaluated to estimate predictors engines. Descriptive statistical analysis, Pearson Correlation and multiple linear regressions was used. Executive functions related to the flexibility (r = 0.54), static and dynamic balance (r = 0.48) and with the agility and mobility (r = -0.41). Regression analysis pointed to balance and flexibility as predictors engines deficiency executive functions. The decline of balance and flexibility can predict the prejudice of the executive functions of elderly with AD.

OBJETIVO: Realizar revisão sistemática de artigos que utilizaram o método de bissecção, para avaliar a percepção de tempo em idosos com doença de Alzheimer e analisar seus parâmetros. MÉTODO: As buscas dos artigos foram conduzidas no período de março a maio de 2011, nas seguintes bases de dados: Web of Science, Science Direct on Line, Biological Abstracts, PsychoInfo e Medline. As palavras-chave e operadores booleanos foram: "interval timing" ou "perception of time" ou "time discrimination" ou "reproduction of time" e "Alzheimer's disease". Também foram realizadas buscas manuais nas referências dos artigos selecionados. RESULTADOS: Quatro artigos contemplavam todos os critérios de inclusão, nos quais foram encontradas grandes variações nos parâmetros utilizados no método. CONCLUSÃO: Pacientes com doença de Alzheimer apresentam prejuízos nas tarefas de bissecção de tempo, que podem ser explicados pelo declínio gradual nas habilidades que são utilizadas no teste de percepção de tempo. Há grandes variações nos intervalos de tempo utilizados. Neste contexto, há necessidade de mais estudos, controlados e randomizados, para investigar potenciais efeitos das variações nos intervalos de tempo do método de bissecção. Os resultados de tais estudos poderão contribuir para o estabelecimento de parâmetros mais adequados e fidedignos.

OBJECTIVE: Perform a systematic review of articles that used the bisection time method to assess the perception of time in patients with Alzheimer's disease by means of the bisection-of-time method, and to analyze its parameters. METHOD: Searches were conducted from March to May, 2011, in the following databases: Web of Science, Science Direct On Line, Biological Abstracts, Medline and PsychoInfo. Keywords and boolean operators were: "interval timing" or "perception of time" or "time discrimination" or "reproduction of time" and "Alzheimer's disease". Additionally, a manual search was conducted in the references of the selected articles. RESULTS: Four studies fulfilled all inclusion criteria, and large variations in the parameters of the method were found. CONCLUSION: Patients with Alzheimer's disease show difficulty in performing the task of bisection of time, which can be explained by the gradual decline on the abilities required in the perception of time test. There are large variations regarding the time intervals applied in the method. In such context, controlled-and-randomized future studies are required, in order to investigate the potential effects of time-intervals variations in the bisection-of-time method. The results of such studies would contribute to establish most suitable and reliable parameters.

OBJETIVO: Analisar as emissões otoacústicas (EOA) em lactentes submetidos a tratamento por medicação ototóxica no período neonatal. MÉTODOS: Foi realizada a captação das EOA por transiente (EOAT) e das EOA produto de distorção (EOAPD) em 40 lactentes: 14 lactentes submetidos a drogas ototóxicas por, no mínimo, cinco dias (grupo estudo) e 26 lactentes sem risco auditivo e sem intercorrências (grupo controle). A análise estatística do conjunto de dados foi efetuada utilizando-se os testes não-paramétricos de Wilcoxon e Mann-Whitney, e a técnica de intervalo de confiança para média. RESULTADOS: Foram observados menores níveis de resposta e relação sinal/ruído nas EOAPD para o grupo estudo, com valores estatisticamente significantes para as frequências de 3000, 6000 e 8000 Hz. CONCLUSÃO: A ação dos ototóxicos pode ser observada pela resposta típica das EOA em altas frequências, o que foi mais bem avaliado pelas EOAPD.

PURPOSE: To analyze the otoacoustic emissions (OAE) of infants exposed to ototoxic drugs during the neonatal period. METHODS: It was carried out the testing of transient OAE (TOAE) and distortion product OAE (DPOAE) with 40 infants: 14 infants exposed to ototoxic drugs for, at least, five days (study group), and 26 infants with no risks for hearing loss and no complications during the neonatal period (control group). The statistical analysis was performed using the non-parametric tests of Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney, and the confidence interval for the average technique. RESULTS: Lower levels of response and signal/noise relation of DPOAE were observed in the study group, with statistically significant values for the frequencies of 3000, 6000 and 8000 Hz. CONCLUSION: The action of the ototoxic drugs can be observed by the typical response of OAE in high frequencies, which was better evaluated by the DPOAE.

Trata-se de um estudo exploratório-descritivo e retrospectivo com os objetivos de identificar, a partir dos dados contidos nos prontuários, diagnósticos de enfermagem; e caracterizar esses diagnósticos através de um mapeamento utilizando a Taxonomia II da North American Nursing Diagnosis Association. A coleta de dados foi realizada em outubro e novembro de 2006, aplicando-se um roteiro, com oito perguntas fechadas, em todos os prontuários (196) existentes no Programa Interdisciplinar de Geriatria e Gerontologia da Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói - RJ. Os dados foram agrupados e organizados para tratamento estatístico descritivo simples. Obteve-se como principais diagnósticos de enfermagem: risco de integridade da pele, memória prejudicada e dentição prejudicada. Concluiu-se que o mapeamento realizado mostrou-se em concordância com a taxonomia diagnóstica, auxiliou na construção de um instrumento padrão e validou a necessidade do uso dessa tecnologia como um sistema padrão de linguagem.

The objectives of this exploratory-descriptive study are: to identify nursing diagnoses, using the data contained in hospital charts; and to characterize these diagnoses through mapping, using Taxonomy II of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association. The data collection was carried out in October and November of 2006, applying a questionnaire with eight closed questions to all the existing hospital charts (196) in the Interdisciplinary Geriatrics and Gerontology Program of the Fluminense Federal University in Niteroi, RJ, Brazil. The data was grouped and organized for simple descriptive statistical treatment. The principal nursing diagnoses were found to be: risk of integrity to the skin, impaired memory, impaired dentition. We conclude that the mapping done showed to be in agreement with the diagnostic taxonomy, helped in the construction of a patterned instrument, and validated the need for the use of this technology as a standard system of language.

Se trata de un estudio de carácter exploratorio-descriptivo y retrospectivo, con los siguientes objetivos: identificar, a partir de los datos contenidos en los prontuarios, los diagnósticos de enfermería, y caracterizar esos diagnósticos por medio de un mapeamiento según la Taxonomía II de la North American Nursing Diagnosis Association. La recolección de los datos, realizada en los meses de octubre y noviembre de 2006, fue hecha por medio de un cuestionario con ocho preguntas cerradas, en los 196 prontuarios existentes en el Programa Interdisciplinario de Geriatría y Gerontología de la Universidad Federal Fluminense, en Niteroi, RJ - Brasil.
