Objective: The Sydney Melancholia Prototype Index (SMPI) is a scale that uses a non-conventional strategy to assess melancholia status based on prototypic symptoms and illness course variables. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the first translation of this instrument in a non-English-speaking population. Methods: A sample comprising 106 Brazilian outpatients with depression was evaluated simultaneously with the Brazilian version of the self-rated SMPI (SMPI-SR) and clinician-rated SMPI (SMPI-CR). The kappa coefficient and t test were used to evaluate concurrent validity vs. DSM-IV, CORE system, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-6 item (HAM-D6), and HAM-D17 assignments to a melancholic or non-melancholic class. The prevalence of melancholia as well as sensitivity and specificity were calculated across instruments. Results: The prevalence of melancholia was highest using DSM-IV criteria (56.6%). The kappa agreement between SMPI-CR and DSM-IV melancholia assignment was moderate (kappa 0.44, p ≤ 0.001). SMPI-CR-assigned melancholic patients had significantly higher CORE, HAM-D17, and HAM-D6 scores. The test-retest consistency values for the SMPI were modest at best, and somewhat superior for the CR version. Conclusion: The Brazilian SMPI-CR presented satisfactory psychometric properties (which were superior to those of the SMPI-SR), and therefore appears to be a useful option for identifying melancholia and studying its causes and optimal treatments.

Resumo: O fósforo é um dos nutrientes mais importantes para a soja, porém apresenta uma dinâmica complexa no solo e pode tornar-se indisponível. A aplicação parcelada e localizada desse nutriente pode ser tática eficiente para aumentar sua disponibilidade. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do parcelamento da dose de P aplicada ao solo e do recobrimento das sementes com fosfato de sódio monobásico na nodulação, no crescimento e nos componentes de rendimento de plantas de soja cultivar BRS Valiosa RR. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2x5x3, ou seja, recobrimento ou não das sementes; cinco doses de P aplicados ao solo; e três épocas de parcelamento da adubação fosfatada. As seguintes variáveis resposta foram avaliadas: teor de P na folha índice, matéria seca da parte aérea, da raiz e dos nódulos, componentes de rendimento e altura de plantas. Houve incremento na nodulação e no crescimento das plantas com o aumento das doses de fósforo aplicado no solo. Nas menores doses, o recobrimento das sementes e o parcelamento da adubação fosfatada aumentaram a nodulação, o crescimento e os componentes do rendimento das plantas. Assim, o parcelamento da dose de P, aliado ao recobrimento das sementes, é indicado para aumentar os componentes de produtividade das plantas de soja.

Abstract: Phosphorus is one of the most important nutrients for soybeans, but it presents a complex dynamic in the soil and can become unavailable. The split and localized application of this nutrient can be an effective approach to increase its availability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a split phosphorus dose applied to the soil and the seed coating with monobasic sodium phosphate on nodulation, growth and yield components of soybean cultivar BRS Valiosa RR. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design in a 2x5x3 factorial arrangement, i.e., coating or not the seeds; five doses of phosphorus applied to the soil; and three times of splitting phosphate fertilizer. Phosphorus content in the index leaf (IL), dry matter of shoots, roots and nodules, yield components, and plant height were evaluated. There was an increase in nodulation and growth of plants with increased levels of phosphorus applied to the soil. In smaller doses, the seed coating and the splitting of phosphorus fertilizer increased nodulation, growth and yield components of plants. Thus, the splitting of the phosphorus dose, combined with seed coating, is indicated for increasing the yield components of soybean plants.

OBJETIVOS: Avaliar o impacto do tratamento do hipotireoidismo subclínico (sHT) na qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde (QoL), aos sintomas psiquiátricos, ao escore clínico e à função muscular. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Em um ensaio randomizado duplo-cego, pacientes foram randomizados para tratamento (n = 35) ou uso de placebo (n = 36). Sintomas clínicos e psiquiátricos foram acessados por meio das escalas de Zulewski, Hamilton e Beck. A QoL foi avaliada pelo questionário SF-36. Medidas da força de quadríceps (QS) e inspiratória (IS) foram obtidas por um dinamômetro de cadeira e um manovacuômetro. RESULTADOS: O tratamento melhorou a IS (+11,5 ± 17,2; p = 0,041), assim como os domínios "Dor" e "Aspectos Físicos" da QoL (+19,7 ± 15,2, 0,039 e +22,1 ± 47,5, p = 0,054, respectivamente). Sintomas clínicos e psiquiátricos demonstraram respostas similares a ambas as formas de intervenção. CONCLUSÕES: Tratamento do sHT melhorou IS e aspectos físicos da QoL, apesar de não ter impacto em outros parâmetros musculares. Escore clínico, sintomas psiquiátricos e domínios do SF-36 que focam em dimensões mentais podem ser mais suscetíveis ao "efeito placebo" em pacientes com sHT.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of subclinical hypothyroidism (sHT) treatment on health-related quality of life (QoL), psychiatric symptoms, clinical score, and muscle function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized double-blind study, patients were assigned either to treatment (n = 35) or placebo (n = 36). Clinical and psychiatric symptoms were assessed by the Zulewski, Hamilton and Beck scales. QoL was assessed by the SF-36 questionnaire. Assessments of quadriceps (QS) and inspiratory muscle (IS) strength were performed by a chair dynamometer and a manuvacuometer. RESULTS: Treatment improved IS (+11.5 ± 17.2; p = 0.041), as did QoL domains "Pain" and "Role Physical" (+19.7 ± 15.2, 0.039 and +22.1 ± 47.5, p = 0.054; respectively). Clinical and psychiatric symptoms showed similar responses to both interventions. CONCLUSIONS: sHT treatment improved IS and physical aspects of QoL, despite no impact in other muscle parameters. Clinical score, psychiatric symptoms, and SF-36 domains, based on mental dimensions of QoL may be more susceptible to "placebo effect" in patients with sHT.

Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a intercorrência entre leucose enzoótica e brucelose em búfalos (Bubalus bubalis) em sistema de produção extensivo, pelo estabelecimento da prevalência de bubalinos reagentes às provas diagnósticas específicas. Foram analisados sorologicamente 232 animais, pela técnica de imunodifusão dupla em gel de agarose para diagnóstico de leucose enzoótica e o teste do antígeno acidificado tamponado, seguida pelos testes confirmatórios 2-mercaptoetanol e soroaglutinação lenta em tubos para diagnóstico de brucelose. As prevalências de búfalos que apresentaram positividade para leucose e brucelose foram 4,21% (10/232) e 5,18% (12/232), respectivamente. Os resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa permitiram concluir que as infecções estudadas encontram-se presentes na população avaliada, entretanto, com baixa prevalência e sem dependência de ocorrência entre ambas.

This study was carried out to evaluate the intercurrence of brucellosis and enzootic leucosis in buffaloes in extensive production system by establishing the prevalence of reagent buffaloes for specific diagnostic tests. We analyzed 232 animals serologically by the technique of double immunodiffusion in agarose gel (AGID) for diagnostic of leucosis and the tampon acidified antigen (TAA) test, followed by confirmatory tests of 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) and slow serum agglutination (SSA) in tubes for diagnostic of brucellosis. The prevalence of buffaloes that were positive for leucosis and brucellosis tests were 4.21% (10/232) and 5.18%(12/232) respectively. The results of this investigation indicated that the diseases occur in the population studied, however, with low prevalence and without depending on the occurrence of both.
