Resumo A variabilidade dos organismos em uma determinada área constitui o que se denomina biodiversidade, uma das propriedades fundamentais da natureza, responsável pelo equilíbrio e estabilidade dos ecossistemas. A perda da biodiversidade tem sido uma grande preocupação para os cientistas, principalmente pelo papel desempenhado pelas atividades humanas, com potencial para desencadear circunstâncias irreversíveis. A Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) desempenha um papel importante no apoio às pesquisas nos mais diversos ramos da ciência. No final da década de 1990, a FAPESP lançou um grande programa de fomento à pesquisa em biodiversidade, denominado BIOTA/FAPESP. Até o momento, este programa financiou a realização de 26 projetos, envolvendo atividades na maior parte do Brasil, embora tenham como foco principal o estado de São Paulo. Esses projetos geraram cerca de 1.140 publicações em periódicos de alto impacto, fornecendo informações relevantes que incluem a descrição original de 1.187 espécies e 76 gêneros e a descrição complementar de 350 espécies, além de diversos trabalhos de inventário, estudos biológicos etc. O programa também tem sido fundamental para o estabelecimento ou adequação de instalações de pesquisa científica e o treinamento de novos taxonomistas. Os grupos de invertebrados terrestres mais estudados incluem os Insecta das ordens Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera e Diptera, e os Arachnida das subclasses Araneae e Acari. Projetos distintos também têm contribuído para a detecção de organismos potencialmente úteis como agentes de controle biológico e na determinação de mapas de áreas preferenciais para o estabelecimento de políticas públicas. No futuro, os grupos prioritários de estudo devem incluir os Annelida e os Nematoda, pelo potencial que ambos têm como organismos benéficos, ou pelo potencial que alguns Nematoda têm como organismos prejudiciais a plantas e animais.

Abstract The variability of the organisms living in a given area constitute what is referred to as biodiversity, one of nature’s fundamental properties, responsible for the balance and stability of ecosystems. The loss of biodiversity has been of great concern to scientists, especially because of the role played by human activities in this regard, able to lead to irreversible circumstances. The São Paulo Research Foundation (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo, FAPESP) plays a major role in supporting research efforts in the most diverse branches of science. In the late 1990´s, FAPESP launched a major program to promote research on biodiversity, named BIOTA/FAPESP. So far, this program has financed the conduction of 26 projects, involving research activities in most of Brazil, while focusing mainly the State of São Paulo. These projects have generated about 1140 publications in peer-reviewed journals of high standard, providing relevant information, including the original description of 1187 species and 76 genera, the complementary description of 350 species, as well as a number of inventory works, biological studies, etc. The program has also been instrumental in the establishment or adequacy of research facilities and training of new taxonomists. Most extensively studied groups of terrestrial invertebrates include Insecta of the orders Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera and Diptera, and Arachnida of the subclasses Araneae and Acari. Distinct projects have also contributed to the detection of organisms potentially useful as biological control agents and in the determination of maps of major interest for the establishment of public policies. In the future, priority groups for study should include the Annelida and the Nematoda, for the potential both have as beneficial organisms, or for the potential some Nematoda have as organisms harmful to plants and animals.

RESUMO: Um estudo de campo de três safras foi conduzido para avaliar o potencial de uso de herbicidas pré-emergentes misturados com glyphosate como meio de controlar as espécies de plantas daninhas na cultura da soja. Nas safras 2011/12, 2012/13 e 2013/14, o cultivar Brasmax Apollo RR foi semeado sob resíduos de colheita de centeio. Os tratamentos herbicidas foram o glyphosate (gly) (1.296 g i.a. ha-1), gly + S-metolachlor (1.296 + 1.920), gly + imazaquin (1.296 + 161), gly + pendimethalin (1.296 + 1.000), gly + metribuzin (1.296 + 480) e gly + 2,4-D (1.296 + 1.209) aspergidos em pré-emergência (PRE) dois dias antes da semeadura da soja. Além disso, foram incluídas as testemunhas capinada e sem capina. Gly + S-metolachlor e gly + pendimethalin reduziram a densidade de buva de 48 para 3 e 6 plantas m-2, respectivamente. A mistura contendo gly + metribuzin e gly + 2,4-D amina e o gly aplicado isoladamente não apresentaram controle dessa planta daninha. As misturas contendo gly + metribuzin, gly + 2,4-D amina, gly + imazaquin e gly aplicado isoladamente não mostraram qualquer efeito no controle de milhã. Em contraste, gly + S-metolachlor e gly + pendimethalin reduziram a densidade de milhã de 70 para 0 e 1 planta m-2, respectivamente. O rendimento de soja foi maior na testemunha sem capina, gly + S-metolachlor e gly + metribuzin. O uso de herbicida com efeito residual teve impacto no manejo de plantas daninhas e na produtividade da soja. Os maiores níveis de controle de buva e milhã ocorreram com os herbicidas S-metolachlor e metribuzin.

ABSTRACT: A 3-year field study was conducted to assess the potential for using pre-emergent (PRE) herbicides tank mixed with glyphosate as a means of controlling weed species in soybean. In 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14 growing sessions soybean cultivar Brasmax Apollo RR was planted under residues of rye. The herbicide treatments glyphosate (gly) (1,296 g a.i. ha-1), gly + S-metolachlor (1,296 + 1,920), gly + imazaquin (1,296 +161), gly + pendimethalin (1,296 + 1,000), gly + metribuzin (1,296 + 480), gly + 2.4-D amine (1,296 + 1,209) was applied in pre-emergence (PRE) over rye crop residues two days before soybean sowing. In addition, full season weed-free and weedy control plots were included. Gly + S-metolachlor and gly + pendimethalin reduced the horseweed density from 48 to 3 and 6 plants m-2, respectively. The mix containing gly + metribuzin and gly + 2.4-D amine and gly applied alone had no effect in the horseweed control. The mix containing gly + metribuzin, gly + 2.4-D amine, gly + imazaquin and gly applied alone had no effect in the crabgrass control. In contrast gly + S-metolachlor and gly + pendimethalin reduced the crabgrass density from 70 to 0 and 1 plant m-2, respectively. The soybean yield was higher with weed-free, S-metolachlor and metribuzin treatments. The use of an herbicide with residual effect had impact on weed management and soybean yield. In conclusion, a greater control of horseweed and crabgrass occurred when S-metolachlor or pendimethalin was applied PRE.

The objective of this prospective study was to determine the plasma levels of nitric oxide (NO) in women with chronic pelvic pain secondary to endometriosis (n=24) and abdominal myofascial pain syndrome (n=16). NO levels were measured in plasma collected before and 1 month after treatment. Pretreatment NO levels (μM) were lower in healthy volunteers (47.0±12.7) than in women with myofascial pain (64.2±5.0, P=0.01) or endometriosis (99.5±12.9, P<0.0001). After treatment, plasma NO levels were reduced only in the endometriosis group (99.5±12.9 vs 61.6±5.9, P=0.002). A correlation between reduction of pain intensity and reduction of NO level was observed in the endometriosis group [correlation = 0.67 (95%CI = 0.35 to 0.85), P<0.0001]. Reduction of NO levels was associated with an increase of pain threshold in this group [correlation = -0.53 (-0.78 to -0.14), P<0.0001]. NO levels appeared elevated in women with chronic pelvic pain diagnosed as secondary to endometriosis, and were directly associated with reduction in pain intensity and increase in pain threshold after treatment. Further studies are needed to investigate the role of NO in the pathophysiology of pain in women with endometriosis and its eventual association with central sensitization.

The objective of the present experiment was to evaluate the effect of different unsaturated fatty acids supplementation sources on digestive metabolism, including nutrient intake and total tract digestibility, microbial protein synthesis and ruminal fermentation in lactating dairy cows. Twelve Holstein mid lactating cows (580±20 kg of body weight; mean±SD, with average of 128 days in milk, and milk yield of 25 kg/d), were assigned randomly into three 4x4 Latin squares, fed the following diets: 1) control (CO); 2) refined soybean oil (SO); 3) whole raw soybean (WS) and; 4) calcium salts of unsaturated fatty acids (CSFA). Milk yields were 26.6; 26.4; 24.1 and 25.7 for cows fed CO, SO, WS and CSFA, respectively. Cows fed SO, WS and CSFA had lesser intake of DM, OM, CP, EE, TC, NFC and TDN than cows fed CO. Animals fed unsaturated fatty acids supplementation had higher DM and EE digestibility, when compared to cows fed CO. Fatty acids supplementation increased ruminal pH and decreased NH3-N concentrations, when compared to animals fed CO. Daily allantoin excretion, uric acid, milk allantoin, total purine derivatives, absorbed purines, microbial nitrogen, and microbial efficiency did not differ among cows fed different experimental diets. Diets with whole raw soybeans and soybean oil improved digestive metabolism and increased the concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids in milk.

Objetivou-se neste estudo avaliar o uso de fontes de ácidos graxos insaturados nas rações de vacas leiteiras sobre o balanco de nutrientes e o perfil de ácidos graxos do leite. Foram utilizadas 12 vacas Holandesas no terco médio de lactação (média de 128 dias) e (580 kg de peso corpóreo) com produção média de leite de 25 kg/ dia distribuidas aleatoriamente em três quadrados latinos balanceados 4x4 alimentadas com as seguintes dietas: 1) controle (CO); 2) óleo de soja refinado; (SO); 3) grão de soja integral (WS) e; 4) sais de cálcio de ácidos graxos insaturados (CSFA). A produção de leite obtida foi de 26,6; 26,4; 24,1 e 25,7 kg/dia para as dietas CO, SO, WS e CSFA respectivamente. As vacas alimentadas com as dietas OS, GS e SCAG apresentaram menores consumos diários de MS, MO, PB, EE, CT, CNF e NDT em relação às vacas do tratamento CO. Os animais alimentados com as dietas contendo ácidos graxos apresentaram maiores valores de digestibilidade da MS e EE em relação a dieta CO. A suplementação de ácidos graxos aumentou os valores de pH e as concentrações de N-NH3 no rúmen. As excreções de alantoína, ácido úrico, alatoína do leite, derivados totais de purinas, total de purinas absorvidas, nitrogênio microbiano, e eficiência microbiana não diferiram entre as dietas experimentais. O uso de ácidos graxos insaturados na dieta de vacas leiteiras altera a eficiência digestiva da dieta dependendo da forma suplementada.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi caracterizar os tipos de relações que ocorrem entre as variáveis morfométricas das larvas de Lophiosilurus alexandri Steindachner, 1876, por meio da análise de seu crescimento alométrico. As variáveis comprimento total, comprimento da cabeça e altura do corpo foram correlacionadas com o comprimento padrão; a altura da cabeça com a altura do corpo; e o diâmetro do olho e a altura da cabeça com o comprimento da cabeça. Os resultados revelaram relações alométricas positivas durante o desenvolvimento inicial, quando o coeficiente b variou entre 1,10 e 2,81. A variável distância pré-anal em relação ao comprimento padrão e a variável comprimento do focinho em relação ao comprimento da cabeça revelaram relação alométrica negativa quando o coeficiente b foi 0,85 e 0,94, respectivamente.

The aim of the present study was to characterize the relationships that occur between morphometric variables of larvae of Lophiosilurus alexandri Steindachner, 1876 through their allometric growth analysis. Total length, head length and body height were correlated with standard length, head height and body height, as well as eye diameter and head height with head length. The results revealed allometric positive relation during the initial development, where the b coefficient varied between 1.10 and 2.81. The variable pre-anal distance in relation to the standard length and the snout length in relation to the head length revealed an allometric negative relation, where the b coefficient was 0.85 and 0.94, respectively.

Objective: To assess parental knowledge and attitudes about fever and the influence of social and family aspects. Methods: Questionnaires distributed to parents of children 1-5 years old in two health districts. For qualitative variables association tests with X² test were applied, and mean differences by Student's t-distribution or analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for quantitative variables. It was considered statistically significant the value of p < 0.05. Results: There were 288 questionnaires analyzed. Fifty percent of respondents have 2 children, and 64.5% work. Older age and higher education levels were found in urban areas (p < 0.001). Fever was considered to be a bad thing by 50.3%, less so those with higher mean age (p < 0.05). Electronic thermometers was used in 67.7%, and 86.2% took armpit temperature considering 37.7ºC as fever. When faced with fever, 58.3% of parents first use antipyretics. Physical measures are used in the first term by 98.2% and 49.3% think these measures lower the fever; they are used less by those parents who work (p < 0.05). Parents with higher education levels remove the clothing and give liquids more than those with primary education (p = 0.035). Most commonly used antipyretics are acetaminophen and ibuprofen; 64.6% perceived differences in efficiency; 65.4% think that ibuprofen is more effective than acetaminophen. Most parents use the dosage prescribed by the pediatrician (85.4%), and 21.5% use the dosage specified in the leaflet, especially those with higher education levels, compared to parents with primary education (p < 0.05). They sometimes alternate antipyretics (67.4%), always following the advice of their pediatrician. Conclusions: There is an overall good knowledge and attitudes about fever.

Objetivos: evaluar los conocimientos y actitudes que tienen los padres sobre la fiebre, así como la influencia de los aspectos familiares. Material y métodos: cuestionario distribuido a padres de dos áreas asistenciales con hijos de 1-5 años. Para variables cualitativas se aplicaron pruebas de asociación mediante el test X²; para las variables cuantitativas se aplicó la diferencia de medias mediante la t de Student o análisis de la varianza (ANOVA). Se consideró como valor estadísticamente significativo p < 0,05. Resultados: se analizaron 288 cuestionarios. El 50% de los encuestados tiene dos hijos. Trabaja el 64,5%. En el área urbana son de mayor edad y nivel de estudios (p < 0,001). Un 50,3% considera la fiebre mala, menos los de edad media superior (p < 0,05). El 67,7% utiliza termómetro electrónico. Consideran fiebre una temperatura de 37,7ºC en axila. Ante la fiebre, el 58,3% utiliza en primer lugar un antitérmico. El 98,2% usa medidas físicas y el 49,3% de ellos piensa que mejoran la fiebre; las usan menos los que trabajan (p < 0,05). Los de estudios superiores quitan ropa y dan líquidos más que los de estudios primarios (p = 0,035). Los antitérmicos más empleados fueron paracetamol e ibuprofeno. Un 64,6% de los encuestados percibe diferencias en cuanto a eficacia. El 85,4% utiliza la dosis indicada por su pediatra y el 21,5%, la que indica la ficha técnica, sobre todo los de estudios superiores frente a los de estudios primarios (p < 0,05). El 67,4% alterna antitérmicos, siempre aconsejados por el pediatra. Conclusiones: globalmente, en la población estudiada existe un buen conocimiento y una actitud adecuada ante la fiebre.

Entre os insetos fitófagos que atacam as culturas, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) destaca-se como uma praga polífaga que causa prejuízos na fase inicial da cultura do arroz. No seu controle, o entomopatógeno Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner revela-se tóxico devido à síntese de proteínas Cry. Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a toxicidade das cepas e proteínas Cry de B. thuringiensis thuringiensis 407 (pH 408) e B. thuringiensis kurstaki HD-73 sobre S. frugiperda. As duas cepas bacterianas foram avaliadas, in vitro, em lagartas de 1º instar de S. frugiperda, através de ensaios de histopatologia. As proteínas Cry1Ab e Cry1Ac, codificadas pelas respectivas cepas de B. thuringiensis, foram avaliadas in vivo, através de bioensaios com lagartas de 1º instar de S. frugiperda para determinação da Concentração Letal Média (CL50). Os resultados da análise histopatológica do intestino médio das lagartas S. frugiperda mostram que o tratamento com a cepa B. thuringiensis thuringiensis foi mais eficiente e a degradação das microvilosidade iniciou-se 9 horas após a aplicação dos tratamentos (HAT). Para B. thuringiensis kurstaki, o mesmo efeito foi observado, 12 HAT. Os dados de toxicidade das proteínas de Cry1Ab e Cry1Ac revelaram para a espécie-alvo uma CL50 de 9,29 e 1,79 μg.cm-2, respectivamente. As cepas e proteínas sintetizadas por B. thuringiensis thuringiensis e B. thuringiensis kurstaki são eficientes no controle de S. frugiperda, e poderão ser usadas na produção de novos biopesticidas ou a utilização dos genes na transformação genética de Oryza sativa L.

Among the phytophagous insects which attack crops, the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) is particularly harmful in the initial growth phase of rice plants. As a potential means of controlling this pest, and considering that the entomopathogen Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner demonstrates toxicity due to synthesis of the Cry protein, the present study was undertaken to evaluate this toxic effect of B. thuringiensis thuringiensis 407 (pH 408) and B. thuringiensis kurstaki HD-73 on S. frugiperda. The following method was used. Both bacterial strains were evaluated in vitro in 1st instar S. frugiperda caterpillars, by means of histopathological assays. The Cry1Ab and Cry1Ac proteins, codified by the respective strains of B. thuringiensis, were evaluated in vivo by bioassays of 1st instar S. frugiperda caterpillars in order to determine the Mean Lethal Concentration (LC50). The results of the histopathological analysis of the midget of S. frugiperda caterpillars demonstrate that treatment with the B. thuringiensis thuringiensis strain was more efficient, because the degradations of the microvilosities started 9 hours after treatment application (HAT), while in the B. thuringiensis kurstaki the same effect was noticed only after 12 HAT. Toxicity data of the Cry1Ab and Cry1Ac proteins presented for the target-species LC50 levels of 9.29 and 1.79 μg.cm-2 respectively. The strains and proteins synthesised by B. thuringiensis thuringiensis and B. thuringiensis kurstaki are effective in controlling S. frugiperda, and may be used to produce new biopesticides or the genes may be utilised in the genetic transformation of Oryza sativa L.

Estudaram-se os aspectos epidêmicos das infecções de suínos causadas por Streptococcus suis, enfocando, principalmente, a ocorrência de diferentes sorotipos. Foram analisadas 323 amostras isoladas de animais clinicamente doentes, as quais foram sorotipadas de acordo com o procedimento de co-aglutinação. Foi verificado que S. suis está presente em vários estados brasileiros e o maior número de isolados originou-se dos estados de Minas Gerais (62,5%), São Paulo (10,8%) e Paraná (9,3%). O sorotipo 2 foi o mais freqüente (61.0%), seguido pelos sorotipos 1, 3, 4, 7 e 8. Os isolamentos foram obtidos principalmente de cérebro (60,1%) e pulmões (10,4%). Os casos de septicemia representaram 9,4%.

The epidemic aspects of swine infections caused by Streptococcus suis were studied, focusing mainly on the occurrence of several serotypes. A total of 323 samples of S. suis were isolated from clinically ill animals, serotyped according to the co-agglutination procedure, and analyzed. The serotyping revealed that S. suis was present in several Brazilian states. The largest number was isolated from the states of Minas Gerais (62.5%), São Paulo (10.8%), and Paraná (9.3%). Serotype 2 was the most frequent (61.0%), followed by the serotypes 1, 3, 4, 7, and 8. The largest number of isolations was obtained from the brain (60.1%), followed by the lungs (10.4%). About 9.4% of the cases were due to septicemia.

There is evidence showing a close relationship between diet and the occurrence of non-communicable chronic diseases. The present study assessed food consumption in a 2002/2004 cohort of young adults born in 1978/79 in Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. The composition of the habitual diet consumed by a sample of 2063 individuals aged 23-25 years was analyzed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire based on studies of prevention of non-communicable chronic diseases. The Dietsys software was used for dietary calculations. In terms of WHO/2003 recommendations, there was a high mean daily consumption of energy from fat (consumption: 35.4%; recommendation: 15-30%), a low mean intake of energy from carbohydrates (47.5%; 55-75%) and a low mean consumption of total fibers (15.2 g; >25 g). Mean intake of energy from fatty acids (10%; <10%) and protein (15.6%; 10-15%) was within recommended limits. When compared to the recommendations of the food pyramid adapted to the Brazilian population, adequate intake was observed only regarding the meat group (consumption: 1.9 portions; recommended: 1-2). There was a low consumption of vegetables (2.9; 4-5), fruits (1.2; 3-5), breads (3.6; 6-9), and dairy products (1.7; 3), with excessive fat and sugar intake (5.7; 1-2). We conclude that the inadequate food consumption observed in this young population may be associated with the development of excess weight and may contribute to the triggering of non-communicable chronic diseases.

Data about the impact of bariatric surgery (BS) and subsequent weight loss on bone are limited. The objective of the present study was to determine bone mineral density (BMD), bone remodeling metabolites and hormones that influence bone trophism in premenopausal women submitted to BS 9.8 months, on average, before the study (OGg, N = 16). The data were compared to those obtained for women of normal weight (CG, N = 11) and for obese women (OG, N = 12). Eight patients in each group were monitored for one year, with the determination of BMD, of serum calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, parathyroid hormone, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and osteocalcin, and of urinary calcium and deoxypyridinoline. The biochemical determinations were repeated every three months in the longitudinal study and BMD was measured at the end of the study. Parathyroid hormone levels were similar in the three groups. IGF-I levels (CG = 332 ± 62 vs OG = 230 ± 37 vs OGg = 128 ± 19 ng/mL) were significantly lower in the operated patients compared to the non-operated obese women. Only OGg patients presented a significant fall in BMD of 6.2% at L1-L4, of 10.2% in the femoral neck, and of 5.1% in the forearm. These results suggest that the weight loss induced by BS is associated with a significant loss of bone mass even at sites that are not influenced by weight overload, with hormonal factors such as IGF-I being associated with this process.

Psychological depression is an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease. C-reactive protein has been implicated as a mediator of the effect of psychological depression. Several studies have found that individuals, especially men, who report higher levels of psychological depression also have higher levels of C-reactive protein. The current study was undertaken to replicate these results in a Brazilian population, in which there is a much wider range of variation in both background characteristics (such as socioeconomic status) and coronary artery disease risk factors. A sample of 271 individuals was interviewed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Fasting blood samples were obtained and evaluated for C-reactive protein (assessed by a turbidimetric immunoassay using a Dade Behring kit) analysis in a subsample (N = 258) of individuals. The mean ± SD C-reactive protein for the entire sample was 0.43 ± 0.44, with 0.42 ± 0.48 for men and 0.43 ± 0.42 mg/L for women. Data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis, controlling for age, sex, body mass index, socioeconomic status, tobacco use, and both total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Higher reported depressive symptoms were correlated with higher C-reactive protein for men (partial r = 0.298, P = 0.004) and with lower C-reactive protein for women (partial r = -0.154, P = 0.059). The differences in the associations for men and women could be a result of differential effects of sex hormones on stress reactivity and immune response. On the other hand, this difference in the associations may be related to gender differences in the disclosure of emotion and the effect that self-disclosure has on physical health and immune response.

The increase in non-communicable chronic diseases of adults is due to demographic changes and changes in the risk factors related to physical activity, smoking habits and nutrition. We describe the methodology for the evaluation of persons at 23/25 years of age of a cohort of individuals born in Ribeirão Preto in 1978/79. We present their socioeconomic characteristics and the profile of some risk factors for chronic diseases. A total of 2063 participants were evaluated by means of blood collection, standardized questionnaires, anthropometric and blood pressure measurements, and methacholine bronchoprovocation tests. The sexes were compared by the chi-square test, with alpha = 0.05. Obesity was similar among men and women (12.8 and 11.1%); overweight was almost double in men (30.3 vs 17.7%). Weight deficit was higher among women than among men (8.6 and 2.6%). Women were more sedentary and consumed less alcohol and tobacco. Dietary fat consumption was similar between sexes, with 63% consuming large amounts (30 to 39.9 g/day). Metabolic syndrome was twice more frequent among men than women (10.7 vs 4.8%), hypertension was six times more frequent (40.9 vs 6.4%); altered triglyceride (16.1 vs 9.8%) and LDL proportions (5.4 vs 2.7%) were also higher in men, while women had a higher percentage of low HDL (44.7 vs 39.5%). Asthma and bronchial hyper-responsiveness were 1.7 and 1.5 times more frequent, respectively, among women. The high prevalence of some risk factors for chronic diseases among young adults supports the need for investments in their prevention.

We report a case of necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis in the spermatic cord in a 35-year-old man with an antecedent of brain stroke 3 years before. The clinical manifestation was as a painless left scrotal mass. The diagnosis was established by histological examination of the spermatic cord. We discuss the physical findings, radiological features and pathological findings, reviewing the literature for previous similar cases.

Describimos una vasculitis granulomatosa necrotizante del cordón espermático en un varón de 35 años que presentó tres años antes un accidente cerebrovascular agudo (ACVA) de etiología no filiada. La forma de presentación clínica fue una masa no dolorosa en región testicular izquierda. El diagnóstico fue realizado en biopsia del cordón espermático. Se comentan las características clínicas, radiológicas e histológicas de este caso y se revisa la literatura.
