RESUMO O desenvolvimento de cultivares mais tolerantes à seca é essencial para a manutenção da produção agrícola mundial. Objetivou-se realizar uma seleção precoce de genótipos de Coffea arabica tolerantes à seca, avaliando-se sua divergência funcional por meio de análises morfológicas, anatômicas e fisiológicas. Mudas de 14 genótipos foram submetidas ao estresse hídrico imposto pela irrigação por 18 dias. Foram medidos parâmetros de crescimento e anatômicos, potencial hídrico foliar e trocas gasosas. Em condições irrigadas e seca prolongada (18 dias), a divergência entre os genótipos foi determinada principalmente por características morfológicas, como área foliar, diâmetro do caule e, consequentemente, massa seca da parte aérea. Sob seca moderada (14 dias), parâmetros como potencial hídrico, espessura da cutícula, densidade estomática, número de vasos do xilema e eficiência do uso da água foram importantes para a divergência do grupo com maior capacidade de manter seu estado hídrico. Os genótipos 1,2,4,11 e 12 possuem características que contribuíram para a manutenção do estado hídrico, como maior espessura de cutícula, densidade estomática, menor número de vasos xilemáticos e espessura do floema, maior comprimento de raiz e maior eficiência de uso de água. A divergência funcional combinando análises morfológicas, anatômicas e fisiológicas em resposta à seca moderada indicou a seleção precoce dos genótipos 1, 2, 4, 11 e 12 como mais tolerantes à seca durante a fase de muda.

ABSTRACT The development of more drought-tolerant cultivars is essential for the maintenance of global agricultural production. This study aimed to perform an early selection of drought-tolerant Coffea arabica genotypes by evaluating their functional divergence using morphological, anatomical and physiological analyses. Seedlings of 14 genotypes were subjected to the drought stress imposed by irrigation for 18 days. Growth and anatomical parameters, leaf water potential and gas exchanges were measured. Under irrigated conditions and prolonged drought (18 days), the divergence among the genotypes was determined mainly by morphological traits, such as leaf area, stem diameter and, consequently, shoot dry mass. Under moderate drought (14 days), parameters such as water potential, cuticle thickness, stomatal density, number of xylem vessels and water-use efficiency were important for the divergence of the group with the highest ability to maintain its water status. The genotypes 1, 2, 4, 11 and 12 have characteristics that contributed to the maintenance of water status, such as greater cuticle thickness, stomatal density, smaller number of xylem vessels and phloem thickness, bigger root length and greater water-use efficiency. The functional divergence combining morphological, anatomical and physiological analyses in response to the moderate drought indicated the early selection of the genotypes 1, 2,4, 11 and 12 as more drought tolerant during the seedling stage.

RESUMO As mudanças climáticas ameaçam a sobrevivência das culturas comercias com sua base genética estreita. Uma das alternativas é a identificação de plantas com potencial para a tolerância a estresses abióticos. Objetivou-se verificar as adaptações fisiológicas e anatômicas ao período seco e os impactos sobre a produtividade de acessos de cafeeiro Híbrido de Timor. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 7 x 2, sendo sete genótipos (UFV 377-21, UFV 377-21, UFV 442-42, BE 5 Wush-Wush x UFV 366-08, UFV 428-02, UFV 376-31 e UFV 427-55) e dois períodos sazonais (seco e chuvoso), com duas repetições. Foram avaliados a condutância estomática; potencial hídrico na antemanhã; níveis de peróxido de hidrogênio e malondialdeído; atividade das enzimas catalase, superóxido dismutase e ascorbato peroxidase; conteúdo de ascorbato; espessura da cutícula da face adaxial e limbo foliar; densidade estomática; relação entre diâmetro polar e equatorial; área do floema; área, diâmetro e frequência de vasos do xilema; condutividade hidráulica relativa; índice de vulnerabilidade; e produtividade. Observaram-se aclimatações dos acessos ao período seco, sendo que alguns mantiveram maiores valores de potencial hídrico na antemanhã; indução do sistema antioxidante com o aumento da atividade da enzima superóxido dismutase e de níveis de ascorbato; aumento da espessura da cutícula e do limbo foliar; e maior relação entre diâmetro polar e equatorial. A maioria dos acessos avaliados apresentou bom desempenho produtivo, com destaque para UFV 377-21, UFV 442-42 e UFV 376-31, com adaptações ao período seco e potencial produtivo.

ABSTRACT Climate change threatens the survival of commercial crops due to their narrow genetic base. One of the alternatives is the identification of plants with potential for abiotic stress tolerance. This study aimed to verify the physiological and anatomical adaptations to the drought period and the impacts on the yield of ‘Híbrido de Timor’ coffee tree accessions. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a 7 x 2 factorial arrangement, being seven genotypes (UFV 377-21, UFV 377-21, UFV 442-42, BE 5 Wush-Wush x UFV 366-08, UFV 428-02, UFV 376-31 and UFV 427-55) and two seasonal periods (dry and rainy), with two replications. The stomatal conductance; predawn water potential; levels of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde; activity of the enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase and ascorbate oxidase; ascorbate content; cuticle thickness of the adaxial surface and leaf lamina; stomatal density; ratio between polar and equatorial diameter; phloem area; area, diameter and frequency of xylem vessels; relative hydraulic conductivity; vulnerability index; and yield were evaluated. The results showed acclimatization of the accessions to the dry period, with some of them maintaining higher water potential values in the predawn; induction of the antioxidant system with the increase in the activity of the superoxide dismutase enzyme and ascorbate levels; increase in the cuticle and leaf lamina thickness; and a higher ratio between polar and equatorial diameters. Most of the evaluated accessions showed a good productive performance, especially the ‘UFV 377-21’, ‘UFV 442-42’ and ‘UFV 376-31’, with adaptations to the dry period and yield potential.

ABSTRACT In order to investigate the existence of a possible abscission zone in the binding region between the peduncle and the coffee fruit, as well as the biochemical events involved in fruit ripening, we studied peduncles and fruits of Coffea arabica L. cv. “Icatu amarelo”. Coffee fruits were harvested at different maturation stages by using specific intervals of detachment force. It was observed a breakdown in the cells of the connecting region between peduncles and fruits throughout the maturation process. This disruption is probably caused by increased activity of the cell wall-loosening enzymes (polygalacturonase and cellulase) as well as by higher levels of lipid peroxidation in the final maturation stages. In general, physiological differences between maturation stages were observed and can largely explain the different detachment forces required at different stages. In conclusion, there is no clear abscission zone between the peduncle and the coffee fruit cv. “Icatu amarelo”. Nevertheless, the decrease in the detachment force throughout the maturation process can occur due to the activity of cell wall-degrading enzymes together with increased oxidative stress during the fruit ripening.

A irrigação tem aumentado a produção de café em muitas regiões do Brasil. Entretanto, com o aumento das áreas de produção irrigadas, problemas relacionados à irrigação frequente e mal planejada podem surgir. Em decorrência de poucos estudos ligados às alterações fisiológicas em plantas de cafeeiro submetidas ao excesso de água, avaliaram-se os efeitos do encharcamento no metabolismo e no particionamento de carboidratos, níveis de pigmentos fotossintéticos e trocas gasosas em mudas de duas cultivares comerciais de café (Mundo Novo e Catuaí). Após aclimatação, as mudas, contendo oito pares de folhas completamente expandidas, foram cultivadas em três condições de disponibilidade de água: capacidade de campo, encharcamento intermitente e encharcamento contínuo. As trocas gasosas e os níveis de clorofilas, carotenóides e carboidratos foram avaliados por cinco meses, após o início dos tratamentos. O encharcamento reduziu as taxas de fotossíntese e transpiração, levando a uma menor atividade da etapa carboxilativa da fotossíntese, culminando com a redução do particionamento de carboidratos nas mudas de café. Apesar de os parâmetros analisados terem sido afetados pelo encharcamento, as cultivares deste estudo sobreviveram por cinco meses sob essas condições de estresse.

Irrigation has enhanced coffee production in several regions of Brazil. However, with the increase in irrigated crop areas, problems related to the frequent and poorly planned usage of irrigation may arise. Since there are few studies related to the physiological alterations in coffee plants exposed to water excess, we evaluated the effects of waterlogging on metabolism and partitioning of carbohydrates, levels of photosynthetic pigments and gas exchange in seedlings of two commercial coffee cultivars (Mundo Novo and Catuaí). After acclimation, seedlings with eight pairs of fully expanded leaves were cultivated under three water availability conditions: field capacity, intermittent waterlogging and continuous waterlogging. Gas exchange and the levels of chlorophyll, carotenoids and carbohydrates were evaluated during the five months after the beginning of the treatments. Waterlogging reduced the rates of photosynthesis and transpiration, leading to lower activity of the carboxylative step of photosynthesis and culminating in the reduction of carbohydrate partitioning in coffee seedlings. Although many physiological parameters were affected by waterlogging, the cultivars in our study survived for five months under stressful conditions.

O presente trabalho visou avaliar a interferência do excesso hídrico do solo sobre o crescimento de plantas jovens de café, cultivares Mundo Novo e Catuaí. As mudas foram submetidas a três condições de disponibilidade de água no substrato: controle (mudas irrigadas), encharcamento contínuo do substrato e encharcamento intermitente do substrato. Diversas características de crescimento foram analisadas ao longo de 19 semanas. Baseado no número e qualidade das variáveis afetadas em todas as análises, a cultivar Catuaí mostrou maior sensibilidade ao encharcamento.. Ambas as cultivares de café apresentaram inibição do crescimento em resposta ao estresse por encharcamento do substrato, que foi agravado pela queda prematura das folhas.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the interference of water excess in soil on the growth of young coffee plants of the Mundo Novo and Catuaí cultivars.Plants were subjected to the following three different substrate water availability conditions: control (wellwatered), continuous substrate waterlogged, and intermittent substrate waterlogged. Several growth-related traits were evaluated over the course of 19 weeks. Based on the number and quality of the affected variables from all forms of analyses, the Catuaí cultivar showed greater sensitivity to waterlogging. Both cultivars exhibited growth inhibition in response to substrate waterlogging stress, which was exacerbated by premature leaf dropping.

Sementes de Cupania vernalis Cambess. possuem características recalcitrantes quando submetidas à secagem, além de curta longevidade, necessitando da aplicação de conhecimentos relacionados a fatores que interferem no armazenamento. Objetivou-se com esta pesquisa avaliar as variações fisiológicas de sementes de C. vernalis quando submetidas a diferentes temperaturas e teores de água, durante o armazenamento. No armazenamento, sementes com graus de umidade de 40%, 35% e 30% foram acondicionadas em sacos plásticos e armazenadas sob temperatura controlada de 10ºC e 25ºC, com umidade relativa de 60%, avaliadas quanto ao grau de umidade, porcentagem de germinação e índice de velocidade de emergência, nos tempos de 0, 120 e 240 dias. O tratamento em que as sementes continham 40% de grau de umidade e armazenadas a temperatura de 10ºC favorece a conservação das sementes de C. vernalis.

Cupania vernalis Cambess. seeds have a short longevity with a recalcitrant behavior when submitted to drying. This demands development and adoption of technologies to improve storage and conservation of the seeds. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate physiological aspects of Cupania vernalis seeds at different storage temperatures and to different seed moisture content. Seeds with 40%, 35% and 30% of water content were conditioned in plastic bags and stored at 10ºC and 25ºC under controlled temperature and relative humidity around of 60%. During 0, 120 and 240 days of storage seeds were taken for evaluation of water content, germination, emergency index. The treatments in which seed contained moisture content of 40% and stored at temperature of 10ºC helps the conservation of seeds of C. vernalis.
