ABSTRACT The coffee sector is estimated to have a retail market value in excess of USD 83 billion, and over 125 million jobs have been created in the global coffee chain. The coffee specialty market has recently increased significantly, generating opportunities to certify coffee beans produced by sustainable practices. This avoids practices potentially harmful to the environment. Agroforestry, organic farming, intercropping, and soil conservation strategies are examples of sustainable alternatives in the production of coffee. In this review, we focus on practices for the sustainable management of coffee plantations that can help farmers fight problems caused by global warming. More specifically, we address soil organic matter and microbiota, the use of Urochloa grass as intercrop in coffee plantations, shading systems (including agroforestry), and organic coffee production. We concluded that from the agronomic viewpoint, we already have production techniques that can replace traditional ones with significant advantages accruing to the quality of coffee orchard ecosystems. Nevertheless, we need scientific research efforts to deal with the existing gaps and the engagement of the whole coffee chain as a means of guaranteeing an adequate profit to those smallholders who adopt and maintain sustainable practice and are capable of bringing several positive changes to the coffee crop, including the use of microbia-based commercial products and new organic sources of nutrients to complement chemical fertilizers and improve coffee quality.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the impact of different vertical positions on lung aeration in patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation. Methods: An open-label randomized crossover clinical trial was conducted between January and July 2020. Adults receiving invasive mechanical ventilation for > 24 hours and < 7 days with hemodynamic, respiratory and neurological stability were randomly assigned at a 1:1 ratio to the sitting position followed by passive orthostasis condition or the passive orthostasis followed by the sitting position condition. The primary outcome was lung aeration assessed using the lung ultrasound score (score ranges from 0 [better] to 36 [worse]). Results: A total of 186 subjects were screened; of these subjects, 19 were enrolled (57.8% male; mean age, 73.2 years). All participants were assigned to receive at least one verticalization protocol. Passive orthostasis resulted in mean lung ultrasound scores that did not differ significantly from the sitting position (11.0 versus 13.7; mean difference, -2.7; [95%CI -6.1 to 0.71; p = 0.11). Adverse events occurred in three subjects in the passive orthostasis group and in one in the sitting position group (p = 0.99). Conclusion: This analysis did not find significant differences in lung aeration between the sitting and passive orthostasis groups. A randomized crossover clinical trial assessing the impact of vertical positioning on lung aeration in patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation is feasible. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar o impacto de diferentes posicionamentos verticais na aeração pulmonar em pacientes em ventilação mecânica invasiva. Métodos: Trata-se de ensaio clínico aberto, randomizado e transversal, realizado entre janeiro e julho de 2020. Adultos em ventilação mecânica invasiva por mais de 24 horas e menos de 7 dias com estabilidade hemodinâmica, respiratória e neurológica foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em uma proporção de 1:1 à postura sentada seguida da condição de ortostatismo passivo ou o ortostatismo passivo seguido de postura sentada. O desfecho primário foi a aeração pulmonar avaliada pelo lung ultrasound score. O escore varia de zero (melhor) a 36 (pior). Resultados: Foram selecionados 186 indivíduos; destes, 19 foram incluídos (57,8% do sexo masculino; média idade de 73,2 anos). Todos os participantes foram selecionados para receber pelo menos um protocolo de verticalização. O ortostatismo passivo resultou em escores médios de aeração pulmonar por ultrassonografia que não diferiram significativamente da postura sentada (11,0 versus 13,7; diferença média, -2,7; IC95% -6,1 a 0,71; p = 0,11). Ocorreram eventos adversos em três indivíduos no grupo ortostatismo passivo e em um no grupo postura sentada (p = 0,99). Conclusão: Esta análise não encontrou diferenças significativas na aeração pulmonar entre os grupos ortostatismo passivo e postura sentada. É factível conduzir um estudo clínico transversal randomizado para avaliar o impacto do posicionamento vertical na aeração pulmonar em pacientes em ventilação mecânica invasiva. Infelizmente, o estudo foi interrompido devido à necessidade de tratar pacientes com COVID-19. Registro ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04176445

Objective: to evaluate and correlate the quality of life and financial toxicity of adult patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: observational, analytical study, carried out with 35 patients in a reference hospital for transplantation in Latin America. For data collection, the Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy Bone Marrow Transplantation and COmprehensive Score for Financial Toxicity questionnaires were used. Spearman and Mann-Whitney correlation tests were used for data analysis. Results: general quality of life during COVID-19 had a low score (67.09/108) with greater impairment in functional well-being (14.47/28), social well-being (16.76/28) and additional concerns (23.41/40). The means of the allogeneic group were lower than those of the autologous group in all domains, showing a significant difference in relation to additional concerns (p=0.01) and in the treatment evaluation index (p=0.04). Financial toxicity was considered to have a slight impact (22.11/44). There was a relationship, albeit not significant, between quality of life and financial toxicity (p=0.051). Conclusion: the quality of life of the sample was low; there is a correlation between quality of life and financial toxicity, although not significant. The higher the financial toxicity, the lower the quality of life.

Objetivo: evaluar y correlacionar la calidad de vida y la toxicidad financiera de pacientes adultos sometidos a trasplante de células madre hematopoyéticas durante el período de la pandemia de COVID-19. Método: estudio observacional, analítico, realizado con 35 pacientes en un hospital de referencia para trasplante en Latinoamérica. Para la recolección de datos, se utilizaron los cuestionarios Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy Bone Marrow Transplantation y el COmprehensive Score for financial Toxicity. Para el análisis de los datos se utilizaron las pruebas de correlación de Spearman y Mann-Whitney. Resultados: la calidad de vida general durante la COVID-19 mostró un puntaje bajo (67,09/108) con mayor deterioro en el bienestar funcional (14,47/28), bienestar social (16,76/28) y preocupaciones adicionales (23,41/40). Los promedios del grupo alogénico fueron inferiores a los del grupo autólogo en todos los dominios, presentando diferencia significativa en relación a preocupaciones adicionales (p=0,01) y en el índice de evaluación del tratamiento (p=0,04). Se consideró que la toxicidad financiera tenía un impacto leve (22.11/44). Se observó una relación, aunque no significativa, entre la calidad de vida y la toxicidad financiera (p=0,051). Conclusión: la calidad de vida de la muestra fue baja; existe una correlación entre la calidad de vida y la toxicidad financiera, aunque no significativa. Cuanto mayor es la toxicidad financiera, menor es la calidad de vida.

Na análise dos dados empregaram-se os testes de correlação de Spearman e Mann-Whitney. Resultados: a qualidade de vida geral, durante a COVID-19, apresentou baixo escore (67,09/108), com maior comprometimento nas funções bem-estar funcional (14,47/28), social (16,76/28) e preocupações adicionais (23,41/40). As médias do grupo alogênico foram inferiores às do autólogo em todos os domínios, apresentando diferença significativa em relação às preocupações adicionais (p=0,01) e ao índice de avaliação do tratamento (p=0,04). A toxicidade financeira foi considerada de impacto leve (22,11/44). Observou-se relação, ainda que não significativa, entre a qualidade de vida e a toxicidade financeira (p=0,051). Conclusão: a qualidade de vida da amostra foi baixa, logo há uma correlação entre qualidade de vida e a toxicidade financeira, embora não significativa. Quanto maior a toxicidade financeira, menor a qualidade de vida.

ABSTRACT The Crop-Livestock Integration system has sustainable potential. But pests such as the defoliating caterpillar Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) can reduce the productivity of this system. The objective was to report transgenic maize and Brachiaria brizantha (A. Rich.) (Poaceae) plants attacked by S. frugiperda in the Crop-Livestock Integration system. Feroz VIP3 ® transgenic maize (SYN8A98 TLTG Viptera) and B. brizantha MG-5 Xaraés plants attacked by S. frugiperda were evaluated 20 days after planting, weekly and for 28 days. The transgenic maize plants were less attacked by S. frugiperda than those of B. brizantha. The negative impact of this pest on B. brizantha suggests the planning and adopting strategies for its control, such as the use of traps, resistant cultivars, and biological or chemical products, minimizing losses in animal production and, consequently, in human food.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of α-lipoic acid on in vitro maturation and of l-arginine on in vitro fertilization of oocytes for in vitro production of sheep embryos. Thus, the ovaries were collected at a local slaughterhouse and the oocytes collected by the method of follicular aspiration with a vacuum pump were divided equally into five maturation groups: CON, without addition of antioxidant; CIS group, with cysteamine as an antioxidant source; and the groups ALA5, ALA10 and ALA20, containing concentrations of 5.0, 10.0 and 20.0 µM of ALA. After 24h of maturation, the oocytes were evaluated concerning occurrence and degrees of expansion of the cumulus cells. The oocytes of the best IVM group were destinated for in vitro fertilization (IVF). The selected and capacitated sperm were included in five groups: CON, without addition of capacitator agent; HEP group, with heparin as a capacitator source; and ARG5, ARG10 and ARG20 groups, where IVF occurred in the same HEP medium, replacing heparin with 5 mM, 10 mM and 20 mM L-arginine, respectively. The results were expressed as a percentage and the variables of cumulus cell expansion and number of cleaved structures were compared using the chi-square test in Epi Info software (Epi Info 7.2.5, Atlanta, GA, USA, 2021). Results were considered significant when P &lt; 0.05. Regarding the expansion of cumulus cells all groups showed 100% expansion, on the total expansion category of COCs it was observed that ALA5 and ALA20 groups did not present the same proportion of COCs with total expansion as CIS group. After in vitro fertilization (IVF), there were no statistical differences in relation to the cleaved structures between CON, HEP, ARG5 and ARG10 groups. However, it was also observed that the use of 20.0 mM of L-arginine reduced the percentage of cleaved structures when compared to the ARG10 group (P&lt;0.05).

El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto del ácido α-lipoico en la maduración in vitro y la l-arginina en la fecundación in vitro de ovocitos para la producción in vitro de embriones ovinos. Así, se recolectaron ovocitos de ovarios obtenidos de mataderos mediante el método de aspiración folicular con bomba de vacío, los cuales se dividieron en cinco grupos de maduración: CON, sin adición de antioxidante, grupo CIS, con cisteamina como fuente antioxidante y los grupos ALA5, ALA10 y ALA20, que contienen concentraciones de 5, 10 y 20 µM de ácido α-lipoico. Después de 24 h de maduración, se evaluó la aparición y el grado de expansión de las células del cúmulo en los ovocitos. Los ovocitos del mejor grupo MIV fueron destinados a fecundación in vitro (FIV), siendo por tanto incluidos en gotas con medio de fecundación in vitro, junto con los espermatozoides seleccionados y capacitados, resultando en los siguientes grupos: CON, sin adición de agente capacitador; grupo HEP, con heparina como fuente de condensadores; y los grupos ARG5, ARG10 y ARG20, donde se produjo la FIV en el mismo medio HEP, reemplazando la heparina por L-arginina 5, 10 y 20 mM, respectivamente. Los resultados se expresaron en porcentajes y las variables expansión celular del cúmulo y número de estructuras escindidas se compararon mediante la prueba chicuadrado del software Epi Info (Epi Info 7.2.5, Atlanta, GA, USA, 2021). Los resultados se consideraron significativos cuando P lt; 0,05. En cuanto a la expansión de las células del cúmulo, todos los grupos mostraron 100% de expansión. Evaluando los grados de expansión de las células del cúmulo, en la categoría de expansión total, se observó que los grupos ALA5 y ALA20 presentaron la misma proporción de CCO con expansión total que el grupo CIS (Plt;0.05), sin embargo se observa que hay una tendencia a la baja de las estructuras con plena expansión cuando se utilizan antioxidantes. En cuanto a las estructuras escindidas, fue posible identificar que no hubo diferencias estadísticas en relación a las estructuras escindidas, entre los grupos CON, HEP, ARG5 y ARG10. Sin embargo, también se observó que el uso de Larginina 20 mM redujo el porcentaje de estructuras escindidas en comparación con el grupo ARG10 (Plt;0.05).

Desta forma, foram realizadas colheitas de oócitos oriundos de ovários obtidos em abatedouro através do método de aspiração folicular com bomba de vácuo, que foram divididos em cinco grupos de maturação: CON, sem adição de antioxidante, grupo CIS, com cisteamina como fonte antioxidante e os grupos ALA5, ALA10 e ALA20, contendo as concentrações de 5, 10, e 20 µM de ácido α-lipóico. Após 24h de maturação, os oócitos foram avaliados quanto à ocorrência e grau de expansão das células do cumulus. Os oócitos do melhor grupo MIV foram destinados à fertilização in vitro (FIV), sendo, portanto, incluídos em gotas com meio de fertilização in vitro, juntamente com os espermatozoides selecionados e capacitados, resultando nos seguintes grupos: CON, sem adição de capacitador agente; grupo HEP, com heparina como fonte de capacitor; e grupos ARG5, ARG10 e ARG20, onde a FIV ocorreu no mesmo meio HEP, substituindo a heparina por L-arginina 5, 10 e 20 mM, respectivamente. Os resultados foram expressos em porcentagem e as variáveis de expansão das células do cumulus e número de estruturas clivadas foram comparadas por meio do teste qui-quadrado do software Epi Info (Epi Info 7.2.5, Atlanta, GA, EUA, 2021). Os resultados foram considerados significativos quando P lt; 0,05. Em relação à expansão das células do cumulus, todos os grupos apresentaram 100% de expansão. Avaliando os graus de expansão das células do cumulus, na categoria de expansão total observou-se que os grupos ALA5 e ALA20 apresentaram a mesma proporção de CCO com expansão total que o grupo CIS (Plt;0,05), porém se observa que há uma tendência de queda de estruturas com expansão total quando os antioxidantes foram utilizados. Em relação às estruturas clivadas, foi possível identificar que não houve diferenças estatísticas em relação às estruturas clivadas, entre os grupos CON, HEP, ARG5 e ARG10. Contudo, também foi observado que o uso de 20 mM de L-arginina reduziu o percentual de estruturas clivadas quando comparado ao grupo ARG10 (Plt;0,05).

Abstract Authoritarian leadership is a challenge for organizational analysis. The perplexity regarding how we have accepted its occurrence various times throughout history runs through the thinking of intellectuals such as Adorno, Habermas, Sloterdijk, and Arendt. A complementary way of studying it is through literature. Literature has enormous potential for interpreting the world and, given the creativity of its authors, it can deal with complex themes, characters, and events, with a freedom that, due to its methodological rigor, science often does not allow. As organizations are also constituted discursively, the textual elements of literature give us an epistemological freedom, enabling analyses that can address traditional organizational topics, such as leadership, in another way. This theoretical essay proposes to use a classic of literature, the novel Moby-Dick , to conduct a critical discourse analysis, based on Norman Fairclough, of the neoliberal-authoritarian monomaniac leadership of Paulo Guedes, the Minister for the Economy of Jair Bolsonaro’s government. The objective is to demonstrate the potential and richness of using literature combined with discourse analysis to understand organizational phenomena. The interpretation will be guided by the leadership style of the character Ahab, ship captain of the Pequod, who as a result of his obsession with hunting the giant white sperm whale, Moby Dick, leads his vessel to a tragic end, similar to what has occurred to Brazil due to the hatred toward the State present in Paulo Guedes’ discourses.

Resumo A liderança autoritária é um desafio à análise organizacional. A perplexidade sobre como aceitamos que ela tenha ocorrido diversas vezes na história perpassa o pensamento de intelectuais como Adorno, Habermas, Sloterdijk e Arendt. Uma maneira complementar de estudá-la é por meio da literatura. A literatura possui enorme potencial interpretativo do mundo que, dada a criatividade de suas autoras e autores, consegue trabalhar temas complexos, personagens, eventos, com uma liberdade que a ciência, pelo seu rigor metodológico, muitas vezes não se permite. Como organizações são também constituídas discursivamente, os elementos textuais da literatura nos permitem uma liberdade epistemológica, ensejando análises que consigam abordar temas organizacionais tradicionais, como a liderança, de outra maneira. A proposta deste ensaio teórico é valer-se de um clássico da literatura, o romance Moby-Dick , para a partir dele realizar uma análise crítica do discurso, baseada em Norman Fairclough, da liderança monomaníaca neoliberal-autoritária de Paulo Guedes, ministro da Economia do governo Jair Bolsonaro. O objetivo é demonstrar o potencial e a riqueza do uso da literatura combinada à análise do discurso para a compreensão de fenômenos organizacionais. A interpretação será guiada pelo estilo de liderança da personagem Acab, capitão do navio Pequod, que devido à sua obsessão por caçar a cachalote branca gigante, Moby Dick, conduz sua embarcação a um desfecho trágico, similar ao que vem ocorrendo ao Brasil devido ao ódio ao Estado presente nos discursos de Paulo Guedes.

ABSTRACT The use of echocardiography by physicians who are not echocardiographers has become common throughout the world across highly diverse settings where the care of acutely ill patients is provided. Echocardiographic evaluation performed in a point-of-care manner can provide relevant information regarding the mechanism of causes of shock, for example, increasing the rates of correct diagnosis and allowing for faster informed decision-making than through evaluation methods. Considering that the accurate diagnosis of life-threatening situations is essential for professionals working with acutely ill patients, several international associations recommend that physicians responsible for critically ill patients acquire and develop the ability to perform bedside ultrasound examinations, including echocardiographic examinations. However, there is no consensus in the literature regarding which specific applications should be included in the list of skills for nonechocardiographer physicians. Taking into account the multiplicity of applications of echocardiography in different scenarios related to acutely ill patients; the differences in the published protocols, with regard to both the teaching methodology and competence verification; and the heterogeneity of training among highly diverse specialties responsible for their care at different levels, this consensus document aimed to reflect the position of representatives of related Brazilian medical societies on the subject and may thus serve as a starting point both for standardization among different specialties and for the transmission of knowledge and verification of the corresponding competencies.

RESUMO O emprego da ecocardiografia por médicos não ecocardiografistas tem se tornado comum em todo o mundo nos mais diversos ambientes em que se dá o cuidado do paciente agudamente doente. A avaliação ecocardiográfica realizada de forma point-of-care pode fornecer informações pertinentes em relação ao mecanismo das causas de choque, por exemplo, incrementando as taxas de diagnóstico correto e possibilitando a tomada de decisão fundamentada de forma mais rápida do que por meio dos métodos tradicionais de avaliação. Considerando que o diagnóstico preciso de situações ameaçadoras à vida é indispensável a profissionais atuando junto a pacientes agudamente enfermos, diversas entidades associativas internacionais recomendam que médicos responsáveis por pacientes gravemente doentes devam adquirir e desenvolver a habilidade para realizar exames ultrassonográficos à beira do leito, inclusive ecocardiográficos. Entretanto, não há consenso na literatura acerca de quais aplicações específicas devam compor o rol de habilidades do médico não ecocardiografista. Levando-se em consideração a multiplicidade de aplicações da ecocardiografia em diversos cenários relativos ao paciente agudamente enfermo; as diferenças nos protocolos publicados, tanto no que diz respeito à metodologia de ensino como de verificação de competências, bem como a heterogeneidade da formação entre as mais diversas especialidades responsáveis pelo seu cuidado em diferentes níveis, este documento de consenso teve o objetivo de refletir o posicionamento de representantes de sociedades médicas brasileiras afins acerca do tema, podendo, assim, servir de ponto de partida para a uniformização entre diferentes especialidades, bem como para a transmissão de conhecimento e a verificação das competências correspondentes.

RESUMO: A interação genótipo x ambiente representa um grande desafio na identificação e seleção de genótipos responsivos às diversas condições de clima e solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar e selecionar pré-cultivares de feijão carioca e feijão carioca precoce com base na adaptabilidade, estabilidade e produtividade de grãos. Na safra 2014 foram conduzidos dois ensaios regionais de competição no estado de Pernambuco: feijão carioca (14 genótipos em Arcoverde, Belém de São Francisco, Caruaru e São João) e feijão carioca precoce (11 genótipos em Araripina, Arcoverde e Caruaru) e na safra de 2015 com feijão carioca precoce (11 genótipos, em Araripina, Arcoverde e Brejão). Os parâmetros foram estimados por meio de modelos mistos e a seleção foi realizada pelo método da Média Harmônica do Desempenho Relativo dos Valores Genéticos (MHPRVG), adotando-se três estratégias: i) seleção com base no valor genético predito, sem interação; ii) seleção com base no valor genético predito, considerando cada local; iii) seleção simultânea quanto à produtividade de grãos, adaptabilidade e estabilidade. Observou-se que os ambientes influenciaram na expressão fenotípica dos genótipos de feijão carioca e carioca precoce, configurando adaptação específica. Os genótipos BRS Notável, BRS Estilo e BRS Pérola, de feijão carioca, e CNFC 15875, BRS Notável e CNFC 15630, de feijão carioca precoce, apresentaram os melhores desempenhos nos ambientes testados, considerando-se, simultaneamente, a adaptabilidade a diferentes condições edafoclimáticas, estabilidade de desempenho e produtividade de grãos.

ABSTRACT: Genotype x environment interactions represent a major challenge in identifying and selecting genotypes responsive to different climate and soil conditions. This research evaluated and selected pre-cultivars of carioca bean and early carioca bean based on adaptability, stability, and grain yield. In the 2014 crop season, two regional competition trials were conducted in the state of Pernambuco: carioca beans (14 genotypes in Arcoverde, Belém de São Francisco, Caruaru and São João) and early carioca beans (11 genotypes in Araripina, Arcoverde, and Caruaru) and, in the 2015 crop season, with early carioca beans (11 genotypes in Araripina, Arcoverde, and Brejão). Parameters were estimated by mixed models, and the selection was performed using the Harmonic Mean of Relative Performance of Genetic Values (HMRPGV) method following three strategies: i) selection based on predicted genetic value with no interaction; ii) selection according to predicted genetic value considering each location; and iii) simultaneous selection for grain yield, adaptability, and stability. The environments influenced the phenotypic expression of the carioca and early carioca bean genotypes, representing a specific adaptation. The genotypes BRS Notável, BRS Estilo and BRS Pérola, of carioca beans, and CNFC 15875, BRS Notável and CNFC 15630, of early carioca beans, had the best results in the environments tested, regarding, simultaneously, adaptability to different soil and climate conditions, performance stability, and grain yield.

Resumo A sonicação é amplamente utilizada para dispersão de nanomateriais em matrizes cimentícias. Aditivos superplastificantes à base de policarboxilato (SP) são geralmente incorporados na suspensão aquosa de nanomateriais antes da sonicação para melhorar a dispersão desses materiais. No entanto, o efeito da sonicação na estrutura molecular e no desempenho de dispersão do SP não foi totalmente investigado. Este trabalho avaliou o efeito da sonicação de um SP comercial a 20 kHz, potência de 750 W, amplitude de 50 e 80%, durante 15 e 30 min. Inicialmente, o efeito de sonicação foi avaliado em suspensão aquosa, determinando a distribuição de tamanho do SP (através de espalhamento dinâmico de luz – DLS) e potencial zeta. Posteriormente, as suspensões aquosas de SP foram utilizadas para a produção de pastas de cimento Portland. Foram realizados ensaios reológicos durante os primeiros 120 minutos de hidratação e a resistência à compressão foi avaliada aos 14 e 28 dias. Os resultados do potencial zeta e DLS sugeriram que a sonicação reduz o tamanho das cadeias de SP. Como resultado, a sonicação do SP aumentou a tensão de escoamento dinâmica inicial, a viscosidade e a área de histerese das pastas de cimento. Em contraste, a sonicação SP melhorou seu desempenho de dispersão ao longo do tempo, resultando em pastas com viscosidade reduzida a partir de 80 minutos. Finalmente, a sonicação SP não afetou a resistência à compressão das pastas de cimento aos 14 e 28 dias de hidratação. Em geral, quando o SP é disperso via sonicação juntamente com nanopartículas para aplicação em matrizes cimentícias, o efeito de sonicação do aditivo químico deve ser levado em consideração quando as propriedades de estado fresco do compósito são avaliadas.

Abstract Sonication is widely used for nanomaterials dispersion in cementitious matrices. Polycarboxylate-based superplasticizer (SP) admixtures are usually incorporated in the aqueous nanomaterials suspension before sonication to improve the dispersion of these materials. Nevertheless, the effect of sonicating SP on its molecular structure or dispersing performance has not been fully investigated. This work assessed the effect of sonicating a commercial SP at 20 kHz, 750 W power, 50 or 80% amplitude, during 15 and 30 min. Initially, the sonication effect was evaluated in aqueous suspension by determining the SP size distribution (through dynamic light scattering – DLS) and zeta potential. Subsequently, the aqueous SP suspensions were used for Portland cement paste production. Rheological tests up to 120 minutes and compressive strength at 14 and 28 days were conducted. DLS and zeta potential results suggested that sonication reduce the size of SP chains. As a result, SP sonication increased the initial dynamic yield stress, viscosity, and hysteresis area of cement pastes. In contrast, SP sonication improved its time-dependent dispersing performance, resulting in pastes with reduced viscosity from 80 minutes onwards. Finally, SP sonication did not affect the compressive strength of cement pastes at 14 and 28 days of hydration. Overall, when SP is sonicated together with nanoparticles for application in cementitious matrices, the effect of sonicating the chemical admixture must be considered when the fresh-state properties of the composite are evaluated.

ABSTRACT Insects are fundamental to biodiversity conservation in almost all ecosystems, and their population decline, and extinction directly result from environmental impacts. These facts are aggravated by the lack of knowledge of insect biodiversity, the so-called biodiversity deficits, especially the Linnean and Wallacean shortfalls. In freshwater ecosystems, biodiversity loss is higher among aquatic insects, and caddisflies comprise one of the most vulnerable orders. In this way, research focusing on describing new caddisfly species and understanding their distribution ranges will increase knowledge of caddisfly biodiversity. In the past 14 years, the team from the Laboratório de Entomologia Aquática “Prof. Dr. Claudio Gilberto Froehlich” (LEAq, Universidade Federal da Bahia, Brazil) and collaborators have been addressing these issues, resulting in 55 described species of caddisflies. Taxa in other insect orders have also received attention and an additional 16 species have been described (eight mayflies, four stoneflies, four neuropteran spongillaflies, and antlions). Here, eight caddisfly species are described and illustrated (Atopsyche froehlichi sp. nov., Austrotinodes zeferina sp. nov., Cernotina kariri sp. nov., Neoathripsodes froehlichi sp. nov., Notalina claudiofroehlichi sp. nov., Oecetis marcus sp. nov., Phylloicus froehlichi sp. nov., and Polycentropus claudioi sp. nov.), five of them in honor of LEAq’s patron. In addition, new distributional data are presented for 10 known species. A checklist of the caddisfly fauna of Bahia state is also presented, with 138 species, around 75% and 30% of them recorded and described by the LEAq team, respectively. Currently, for caddisflies, Bahia is the fifth most species-rich state in Brazil, and the first in the Brazilian Northeast region.

ABSTRACT The objective of the present work was to evaluate the influence of environmental variables on the interaction between genotypes and environments and to identify adapted and stable genotypes for grain seed yield. Twenty-one cultivars were evaluated in randomized blocks with four replications in the years 2016, 2017, and 2018 in the northeastern semi-arid region of Brazil, for seed yield and oil content. Factor regression methodologies and principal component analysis were used with predictions of the sum of the genotypic effects and the interaction to quantify the role of five environmental covariates in the genotype x environment interaction; the Harmonic Mean Method of Relative Performance of Genotypic Values was used for identifying adapted and stable genotypes. The covariance biplot model is useful for relating important environmental factors and indicating their relative effect on seed yield and oil content. Rainfall, relative humidity and maximum temperature contribute positively to increasing oil content while minimum temperature and solar radiation reduce it. Within the limits of the work, the maximum temperature positively influences grain production while the minimum reduces it. The most stable genotypes and those adapted for grain seed yield and oil content are BMX OPUS IPRO, P 98Y70 RR, BRS 333 RR, BRS 9280 RR, M 8644 IPRO, M 8372 IPRO, and ST 920 RR.

RESUMO O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a influência de variáveis ambientais na interação entre genótipos e ambientes e identificar genótipos adaptados e estáveis para a produção de sementes. Vinte e uma cultivares foram avaliadas em blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições nos anos de 2016, 2017 e 2018 no semiárido nordestino do Brasil, para rendimento de sementes e teor de óleo. Metodologias de regressão fatorial e análise de componentes principais foram utilizadas com previsões da soma dos efeitos genotípicos e a interação para quantificar o papel de cinco covariáveis ambientais na interação genótipo x ambiente; o Método da Média Harmônica de Desempenho Relativo de Valores Genotípicos foi usado para identificar genótipos adaptados e estáveis. O modelo biplot de covariância é útil para relacionar fatores ambientais importantes e indicar seu efeito relativo no rendimento de sementes e no teor de óleo. A precipitação, a umidade relativa e a temperatura máxima contribuem positivamente para aumentar o teor de óleo, enquanto a temperatura mínima e a radiação solar o reduzem. Dentro dos limites do trabalho, a temperatura máxima influencia positivamente a produção de grãos enquanto a mínima a reduz. Os genótipos mais estáveis e adaptados para rendimento de sementes de grãos e teor de óleo são BMX OPUS IPRO, P 98Y70 RR, BRS 333 RR, BRS 9280 RR, M 8644 IPRO, M 8372 IPRO e ST 920 RR.

Abstract Background Dental anesthetic management in implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) recipients with cardiac channelopathies (CCh) can be challenging due to the potential risk of life-threatening arrhythmias and appropriate ICD therapies during procedural time. Objectives The present study assessed the hypothesis that the use of local dental anesthesia with 2% lidocaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine or without a vasoconstrictor can be safe in selected ICD and CCh patients, not resulting in life-threatening events (LTE). Methods Restorative dental treatment under local dental anesthesia was made in two sessions, with a wash-out period of 7 days (cross-over trial), conducting with a 28h - Holter monitoring, and 12-lead electrocardiography, digital sphygmomanometry, and anxiety scale assessments in 3 time periods. Statistical analysis carried out the paired Student’s t test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. In all cases, a significance level of 5% was adopted. All patients were in stable condition with no recent events before dental care. Results Twenty-four consecutive procedures were performed in 12 patients (9 women, 3 men) with CCh and ICD: 7 (58.3%) had long QT syndrome (LQTS), 4 (33.3%) Brugada syndrome (BrS), and 1 (8.3%) Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT). Holter analysis showed no increased heart rate (HR) or sustained arrhythmias. Blood pressure (BP), electrocardiographic changes and anxiety measurement showed no statistically significant differences. No LTE occurred during dental treatment, regardless of the type of anesthesia. Conclusion Lidocaine administration, with or without epinephrine, can be safely used in selected CCh-ICD patients without LTE. These preliminary findings need to be confirmed in a larger population with ICD and CCh.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Chromosomal abnormalities (CAs) have been described in patients with secondary amenorrhea (SA). However, studies on this association are scarce. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency and types of CAs detected by karyotyping in patients with SA. DESIGN AND SETTING: This retrospective study was performed in a reference clinical genetic service in South Brazil. METHODS: Data were obtained from the medical records of patients with SA who were evaluated between 1975 and 2022. Fisher’s bicaudate exact test and Student’s t-test were used, and P < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Among 43 patients with SA, 14 (32.6%) had CAs, namely del (Xq) (n = 3), 45,X (n = 2), 46,X,r(X)/45,X (n = 2), 46,XX/45,X (n = 1), 46,X,i(q10)/45,X (n = 1), 47,XXX (n = 1), 46,XX/47,XXX (n = 1), 46,XX/47,XX,+mar (n = 1), 45,XX,trob(13;14)(q10;q10)/46,XXX,trob(13;14)(q10;q10) (n = 1), and 46,XX,t(2;21)(q23;q11.2) (n = 1). Additional findings were observed mostly among patients with CA compared with those without CA (P = 0.0021). No difference in the mean age was observed between the patients with SA with or without CAs (P = 0.268025). CONCLUSIONS: CAs are common among patients with SA, especially those with short stature and additional findings. They are predominantly structural, involve the X chromosome in a mosaic, and are compatible with the Turner syndrome. Patients with SA, even if isolated, may have CAs, particularly del (Xq) and triple X.
