Resumo Este artigo toma as remoções como prisma descritivo e analítico para perspectivar a produção do espaço urbano e do conflito, a partir, sobretudo, da violência produzida pelo Estado. O texto tem como base empírica pesquisa etnográfica realizada no centro de São Paulo, onde a força do Estado se revela na realização de remoções, deslocamentos, destruição de territórios e de tecidos sociais longamente constituídos, como também na produção de informalidade e mercados informais; relaciona-se também com a articulação de redes e arranjos de proteção (habitacionais, inclusive) como respostas a essas violências. Abstract Based on violence originated by the State, this article describes and analyzes evictions to put the production of urban space and conflict into perspective. The text’s empirical basis is an ethnographic study carried out in the central area of São Paulo, where the State’s strength is revealed through evictions, displacements, destruction of territories and long-established social fabrics, and production of informality and informal markets; it also approaches the articulation of networks and protection arrangements (including housing) as responses to this violence. Resumo Este artigo examina, a partir de pesquisa etnográfica, dinâmicas urbanas e políticas articuladas e produzidas por uma ocupação de moradia, mantida por movimentos organizados, no centro de São Paulo. A análise dá-se em torno de três eixos: cotidiano, território e conflito. A observação do cotidiano permite a compreensão de uma ocupação como um potente campo de gravitação, que se articula a redes e circuitos outros integrando e produzindo uma cartografia política. Tanto o campo de gravitação que se arma a partir da ocupação quanto a cartografia política a que esse campo de gravitação se constela compõem e produzem um território, atravessado, ele também, por linhas de força e conflitivas que marcam as disputas que fazem a cidade.

Abstract This article investigates, through ethnographic research, different urban and political dynamics articulated and produced by a squatted building maintained by organized movements in downtown São Paulo. Three dimensions are analyzed: daily life, territory and conflict. The observation of daily life enables to understand the squatted building as a powerful gravitational field around which networks and circuits orbit, integrating and creating a political cartography. Both the gravitational field that is created with the squatted building and the political cartography produced by the gravitational field compose and configure a territory, which, in turn, is also crossed by conflicting forces marking the disputes that make the city.
