RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da suplementação proteica materna sobre o metabolismo energético do músculo esquelético de bezerros de corte. Dezesseis matrizes gestantes foram divididas em três grupos: CONTROLE (não suplementado); MÉDIO (suplementados entre 30 e 180 dias de gestação); e FINAL (suplementado entre 181 e 281 dias de gestação). O suplemento continha 30% de proteína bruta e foi fornecido em quantidades totais iguais aos tratamentos. Trinta dias após o nascimento, amostras de sangue e músculo dos bezerros foram coletadas para análises de expressão gênica, abundância de proteínas e metabólitos. Não foram observadas diferenças (P ≥ 0,15) no peso ao nascimento ou parâmetros de desempenho ao desmame, bem como na expressão dos genes avaliados (P ≥ 0,21). Os bezerros nascidos de matrizes do tratamento CONTROLE apresentaram menor proporção (P = 0,03) de proteína p-AMPK/AMPK no músculo esquelético. Os bezerros nascidos de matrizes do tratamento MÉDIO apresentaram concentração de glicose menor (P = 0,04) do que aqueles nascidos de matrizes do tratamento FINAL. Os resultados observados indicam que a ausência de suplementação proteica em matrizes gestantes pode alterar o metabolismo energético da progênie e refletir em uma inflexibilidade metabólica, a qual pode ocasionar limitações quanto à eficiência energética do tecido muscular esquelético e consequentemente, limitar o desempenho da progênie ao longo da fase pós-natal.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effect of maternal protein supplementation during mid or late gestation on energy metabolism of the skeletal muscle of beef calves. Sixteen pregnant cows were divided into 3 groups: CTRL (not supplemented); MID (supplemented from 30 to 180 days of gestation); and LATE (supplemented from 181 to 281 days of gestation). The supplement contained 30% crude protein. Thirty days after birth, blood and muscle samples of the calves were collected for analyses of gene expression, proteins, and metabolites. No differences (P ≥ 0.15) in birth weight, performance at weaning, or muscle expression of the genes evaluated (P ≥ 0.21) were observed. Calves born to CTRL cows had a lower ratio (P = 0.03) of p-AMPK/AMPK protein in the skeletal muscle. Calves born to MID cows had lower (P = 0.04) glucose concentration than those born to LATE cows. Changes in p-AMPK/AMPK protein, indicated a possible metabolic inflexibility in the skeletal muscle of calves born to CTRL cows. These results indicated that lack of protein supplementation in pregnant cows alter the energy metabolism of their calves and reflect in a metabolic inflexibility.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate genetic recurrence and molecular markers for dyslexia in two candidate genes in the Brazilian population. Methods: a cross-sectional, case-control, observational study, with five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) studied in DYX1C1 and KIAA0319 genes in 86 subjects with dyslexia and 66 controls, matched for gender and age. SNPs were genotyped using the polymerase chain reaction technique in real time, and distribution of genotypic and allelic frequencies between the groups was analyzed. Results: it was determined that 68% of the subjects with dyslexia present a family history of learning difficulties. The DYX1C1 gene did not demonstrate an association with dyslexia, which was found regarding the rs9461045 marker of the KIAA0319 gene. Conclusion: a family history of learning problems was present in more than two-thirds of the group with dyslexia, indicating that this is an important risk factor. An association with dyslexia in the rs9461045 marker was noted, making the study the first one to show an association of the KIAA0319 gene with dyslexia, in Latin America.

RESUMO Objetivo: Comparar as características antropométricas, bioquímicas, hormonais e a presença de polimorfismos genéticos de leptina, adiponectina e fator de necrose tumoral alfa (TNF-α) entre crianças e adolescentes eutróficos e obesos. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo caso-controle conduzido com 104 crianças e adolescentes. Todos os indivíduos foram avaliados quanto às características antropométricas e parâmetros clínicos, laboratoriais e de polimorfismo genético. A amostra foi selecionada no ambulatório de endocrinologia pediátrica especializado no tratamento da obesidade em crianças e adolescentes de acordo com a classificação do Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), e os controles foram selecionados no mesmo local, porém no ambulatório de pediatria geral. Resultados: Alguns parâmetros foram associados à obesidade em nosso estudo: cor preta, pais obesos, pais hipertensos e desmame precoce. Níveis aumentados de insulina, triglicerídeos, colesterol total, colesterol LDL, PCR-U, AST, ALT, GGT, T4 Livre, IGF-1, ácido úrico e níveis baixos de colesterol HDL estão associados a uma chance maior de obesidade. A presença de polimorfismos AG/AA na leptina está associada a uma chance 290% (OR 3,9) maior de obesidade, enquanto para os genes da adiponectina as chances são 740% (OR 8,4) maiores. Nessas crianças e adolescentes obesos com haplótipos AG/AA, os níveis séricos de leptina aumentaram e os níveis de adiponectina diminuíram em relação aos eutróficos, já os níveis séricos de TNF-α não se alteraram. Conclusões: Concluiu-se que os polimorfismos AG/AA nos genes da leptina e adiponectina alteram os níveis séricos dessas adipocinas e predispõem à obesidade precoce, e muitos marcadores antropométricos, bioquímicos e hormonais ficam alterados, trazendo consequências para a saúde dessas crianças e adolescentes.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the anthropometric, biochemical, and hormonal characteristics and the presence of genetic polymorphisms of leptin, adiponectin, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) between eutrophic and obese children and adolescents. Methods: This is a case–control study involving 104 children and adolescents. All subjects were assessed for anthropometric characteristics and clinical, laboratory, and genetic polymorphism parameters. The sample was selected from the pediatric endocrinology outpatient clinic specialized in the treatment of obesity in children and adolescents according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classification, and controls were selected from the same location in the general pediatric outpatient clinic. Results: As a result, the parameters, such as black color, obese parents, hypertensive parents, and early weaning, were found to be associated with obesity. Increased levels of insulin, triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, CRP-U, AST, ALT, GGT, free T4, IGF-1, and uric acid and low levels of HDL cholesterol are found to be associated with a higher chance of obesity. The presence of AG/AA polymorphisms in the leptin is associated with a 290% (OR 3.9) higher chance of obesity, and for adiponectin genes, the chances are 740% (OR 8.4) higher. In these obese children and adolescents with AG/AA haplotypes, serum leptin levels were increased and adiponectin levels were decreased in eutrophic individuals, whereas serum TNF-α levels did not change. Conclusions: The AG/AA polymorphisms in the leptin and adiponectin genes alter the serum levels of these adipokines and predispose them to obesity, and many anthropometric, biochemical, and hormonal markers are altered, demonstrating early consequences for the health of these obese children and adolescents.

Resumo Objetivou-se identificar determinantes sociais em saúde associados à vivência da fome entre adolescentes escolares brasileiros. Foi realizado um estudo transversal com microdados de 16.526 adolescentes da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde do Escolar 2015. A vivência da fome foi estimada considerando a frequência com que o adolescente havia ficado com fome por não ter comida suficiente em casa no mês anterior à pesquisa. Para a análise dos determinantes sociais em saúde foi realizada Regressão de Poisson com variância robusta. Verificou-se, no Brasil, que a vivência da fome foi de 22,8% (IC95%: 21,9-23,7) entre adolescentes. Essa associou-se diretamente ao sexo masculino (RP=1,12; IC95%: 1,07-1,16), a não ter excesso de peso (RP=1,08; IC95%: 1,04-1,13), ao consumo irregular de feijão (RP=1,20; IC95%: 1,13-1,26), de legumes e verduras (RP=1,16; IC95%: 1,09-1,22) e de frutas (RP=1,19; IC95%: 1,13-1,24), à insatisfação corporal (RP=1,26; IC95%: 1,18-1,35) e ao consumo irregular de almoço ou jantar com os responsáveis (RP=1,41; IC95%: 1,32-1,52); e inversamente ao gradiente de escolaridade materna, e às macrorregiões do complexo Centro-Sul. Os resultados indicam a coexistência da fome, comportamentos alimentares de risco nutricional, insatisfação corporal e condições de iniquidade social entre adolescentes brasileiros.

Abstract The aim of this study was to identify social determinants of health associated with the experience of hunger among school-age adolescents in Brazil. The experience of hunger was directly associated with being male (PR = 1.12; 95%CI: 1.07-1.16); not being overweight (PR = 1.08; 95%CI: 1.04-1.13 ); irregular consumption of beans (PR = 1.20; 95%CI: 1.13-1.26), vegetables (PR=1.16; 95%CI: 1.09-1.22) and fruit (PR = 1.19; 95%CI: 1.13-1.24); body dissatisfaction (PR = 1.26; 95%CI: 1.18-1.35); and not regularly eating lunch or dinner with parents or guardians (PR = 1.41; 95%CI: 1.32-1.52). An inverse association was found between the experience of hunger and maternal education level and living in the Mid-West, Southeast and South. The findings show that the experience of hunger among Brazilian adolescents coexists with risky eating behaviors, body dissatisfaction, and social inequality.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to evaluate the physiological and biochemical changes resulting from controlled deterioration in different lots of sunflower seeds. Two sunflower seed lots of the cultivar Hélio 253 were subjected to simulated deterioration, using the accelerated aging test methodology (41 °C and 100% RH) for 0, 48, 72, and 96 h. Then, the seeds were subjected to the tests of germination, first germination count, seedling length and dry matter, emergence, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, and total seedling length. The antioxidant activity was evaluated through the enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and peroxidase (POX) at 0, 2, 4, and 6 days after sowing. Deterioration caused a reduction in the germination and vigor of the seeds, mainly in the lot with lower initial vigor and for the longest exposure times (72 and 96 h). For both lots, reductions in SOD activity and increases in POX and APX were observed during seed germination, mainly after 48 h of exposure to aging deterioration. Peroxidase enzymes are activated in deteriorated and non-deteriorated sunflower seeds, mainly after two days of germination.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as alterações fisiológicas e bioquímicas decorrentes da deterioração controlada em diferentes lotes de sementes de girassol. Foram utilizados dois lotes de sementes da cultivar Hélio 253, condicionados à deterioração simulada, utilizando-se a metodologia do teste de envelhecimento acelerado conduzido (41 °C e 100% UR) por 0, 48, 72 e 96 h. Em seguida, as sementes foram submetidas aos testes de germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, comprimento e matéria seca de plântulas, emergência, envelhecimento acelerado e condutividade elétrica. A avaliação da atividade antioxidante foi feita através das enzimas superóxido dismutase (SOD), ascorbato peroxidase (APX) e peroxidase (POX) aos 0, 2, 4 e 6 dias após a semeadura. A deterioração provocou redução na germinação e no vigor das sementes, principalmente no lote de menor vigor inicial e nos maiores tempos de exposição (72 e 96 h). Para ambos os lotes, foram observadas reduções da atividade da SOD e aumento da POX e APX durante a germinação das sementes, sobretudo a partir de 48 h de exposição ao envelhecimento. As enzimas peroxidases são ativadas em sementes deterioradas e não deterioradas de girassol, principalmente após dois dias de germinação.

Background: A population study is an important tool that can be used to understand the actual epidemiological scenario of the Covid-19 in different territories, identify its magnitude, understand its transmission dynamics, and its demographic, geographical, and social distribution. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the population of two Brazilian cities during the pandemic first wave and subsequent socioeconomic and health effects. Materials & methods: This paper described the methodological procedures adopted and the prevalence of the SARS-CoV-2 infection in the population. A household survey was conducted between October and December 2020, in two historic cities of Brazil's mining region. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody was detected using the Wondfo® rapid test. The face-to-face interview consisted of administration of a questionnaire containing registration data, sociodemographic and economic variables, living habits, general health condition, mental health, sleep habits, and eating and nutrition. Results: We evaluated 1,762 residents, of which 764 (43.4%) were in Mariana and 998 (56.6%) in Ouro Preto. For both cities, 51.9% of the interviewees were female, with a predominance of the age range 35 to 59 years old (47.2%). The prevalence of the SARS-CoV-2 infection was 5.5% in all cities, 6.2% in Ouro Preto, and 4.7% in Mariana. The prevalence was similar between cities (P>0.05). Conclusion: The study was effective in verifying the seroprevalence of infection by the virus and its findings will enable further analyses of the health conditions of the population related to social isolation and the risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2.

Resumo Objetivou-se avaliar a adesão à alimentação escolar por adolescentes brasileiros considerando determinantes individuais e do contexto escolar. Foram avaliados 10.262 adolescentes de escolas públicas da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde do Escolar de 2015. Regressão multinível foi utilizada para estimar o efeito de variáveis do contexto individual e do ambiente escolar na ocorrência da baixa adesão à alimentação escolar por adolescentes. A prevalência dessa baixa adesão (consumo da alimentação escolar ≤2dias/semana) foi 64,2% nesse grupo. O modelo explicativo evidenciou menor adesão a essa prática entre adolescentes do sexo feminino (RP=1,09; IC: 1,03-1,14), entre aqueles com 15 anos ou mais de idade (RP=1,08; IC: 1,02-1,14), que tinham consumo regular de refrigerantes (RP=1,09; IC: 1,03-1,15), que não realizavam regularmente almoço e jantar com pais e responsáveis (RP=1,08; IC: 1,02-1,14), e que moravam em domicílios com menos de 4 pessoas (RP=1,07; IC: 1,02-1,13). Em relação ao ambiente escolar, estudar em escolas com mais de 1.000 alunos (RP=1,22; IC: 1,12-1,33) e com presença de cantina (RP=1,15; IC: 1,08-1,22) determinaram a baixa adesão. Os resultados demonstram importante efeito do contexto escolar na determinação do consumo da alimentação escolar por adolescentes.

Abstract The scope of this study was to evaluate the acceptance of school food by Brazilian adolescents, taking individual and school context determinants into consideration. A total of 10,262 adolescents in public schools of the 2015 Brazilian National Survey of School Health (PeNSE 2015) were assessed. Multilevel regression was used to estimate the effect of variables of the individual context and the school environment on low acceptance of school food by adolescents. The prevalence of low acceptance (consumption of school meals ≤ 2 days/week) was 64.2% in this group. The explanatory model showed less acceptance of this practice among female adolescents (PR=1.09; CI: 1.03-1.14), among those aged 15 years or older (PR=1.08; CI: 1.02-1.14), those who regularly consumed soft drinks (PR=1.09; CI: 1.03-1.15), those who did not regularly have lunch and dinner with parents and guardians (PR=1.08; CI: 1.02-1.14), and those who lived in households with less than 4 people (PR=1.07; CI: 1.02-1.13). Concerning the school environment, studying in schools with more than 1,000 students (PR=1.22; CI: 1.12-1.33) and the presence of a cafeteria (PR=1.15; CI: 1.08-1.22) led to low acceptance. The results revealed the importance of the school context in determining the consumption of school meals by adolescents.

Resumo: Elasmobrânquios apresentam os maiores declínios populacionais entre os vertebrados, sendo considerado um dos grupos com maior risco de extinção. O Litoral Amazônico Brasileiro (BAC) é considerado uma área prioritária para conservação de elasmobrânquios, pois várias espécies são endêmicas da região, e a maioria delas estão ameaçadas de extinção. O presente estudo fez uma análise cientométrica aplicando o método IRAMUTEQ (Interface de R pour les Analyses Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires) para avaliar as tendências de pesquisas com elasmobrânquios no BAC nas últimas quatro décadas. Dez tendências de pesquisa foram identificadas, destacando-se “Biodiversidade”, “Reprodução”, “Ecologia trófica” e “Conservação”. Entretanto, a maioria das publicações encontradas é voltada para o conhecimento da diversidade e abundância das espécies na região, sendo o número de estudos voltados para a reprodução, alimentação e outros aspectos da biologia e ecologia de elasmobrânquios do BAC menos expressivo. Apesar da área de investigação “Conservação” ter se destacado na busca, a quantidade de informações relevantes para que medidas de manejo e conservação possam ser implementadas ainda é baixa. Por fim, apesar de seguir a tendência mundial de estudos com elasmobrânquios entre 2000 a 2010, as investigações sobre o BAC precisam avançar, especialmente considerando o baixo nível de informações básicas sobre a maioria das espécies (biologia e dinâmica populacional) e o conhecimento incompleto da composição específica das espécies de elasmobrânquios em toda a área, aspectos relevantes para a conservação e estudos mais aplicados e que contem com metodologias e tecnologias mais recentes.

Abstract: Elasmobranchs exhibit the biggest population declines among vertebrates, being considered one of the groups with the highest risk of extinction. The Brazilian Amazon Coast (BAC) is considered a priority area for elasmobranch conservation, as many species are endemic to the region, and most of them are threatened with extinction. The present study made a scientometric analysis using the IRAMUTEQ method (Interface de R pour les Analyses Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires) to evaluate the trends of research with elasmobranchs in BAC in the last four decades. Ten research trends were identified, highlighting “Biodiversity”, “Reproduction”, “Trophic Ecology” and “Conservation”. However, most of the publications found are aimed at understanding the diversity and abundance of species in the region, with the number of studies focused on reproduction, feeding and other aspects of the biology and ecology of elasmobranchs in the BAC being less expressive. Although the research area “Conservation” stood out in the search, the amount of relevant information so that management and conservation measures can be implemented is still low. Lastly, despite following the global trend of studies with elasmobranchs between 2000 and 2010, investigations into the BAC need to advance, especially considering the poor level of basic information on most species (Biology and population dynamics) and the incomplete knowledge of specific composition of elasmobranch species in the entire area, aspects relevant to conservation and more applied studies that rely on more recent methodologies and technologies.

ABSTRACT In recent years, the number of cases with severe Plasmodium vivax malaria has shown an increasing trend. It is, therefore, important to identify routine laboratory markers that best characterize the acute disease phase and can serve as a tool for clinical follow-up of patients. In a cohort study, we followed 87 patients with acute P. vivax monoinfection acquired in an endemic region of the Brazilian Amazon. Forty-two different biochemical and hematological parameters frequently tested in clinical routine were evaluated at the acute phase and the convalescent phase. A total of 42 laboratory tests were performed: biochemical parameters measured were serum lipids levels, aminotransferases, bilirubin, amylase, glucose, urea, creatinine, albumin, globulin, uric acid, C-reactive protein, and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein. Hematological parameters included total and differential white blood cell and platelet counts, hemoglobin concentration, mean platelet volume, platelet width distribution, and plateletcrit. Our results show that several biochemical and hematological parameters were associated with acute phase P. vivax malaria and these parameters reverted to normal values in the convalescent phase. The use of these parameters during diagnosis and follow-up of the infection is a useful clinical tool to evaluate the clinical course and therapeutic response of patients with uncomplicated vivax malaria.

RESUMO O pavimento é considerado um sistema de múltiplas camadas finitas, sujeito às tensões, deformações e deslocamentos provenientes das solicitações cíclicas do tráfego. A fundação da estrutura deve apresentar capacidade de suporte compatível com a intensidade e frequência com a qual será solicitada. Sob essa perspectiva, o presente estudo avalia o desempenho de quatro solos com origens geológicas diferentes, usualmente encontrados em subleitos rodoviários no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, com base em princípios da Mecânica dos Pavimentos. A metodologia aplicada nesse estudo consistiu em simulações numéricas assistidas por dois programas computacionais: AEMC/SisPav e AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design. As análises mecanicistas foram realizadas para avaliar a resposta do solo frente à deformação resiliente e à resistência ao cisalhamento, importantes propriedades no emprego de solos em pavimentação. Os resultados mostraram que a deformação resiliente apresenta um papel preponderante no desempenho dos materiais, visto que, para os solos analisados, não há qualquer indício de ruptura por cisalhamento, tanto como material de subleito rodoviário como fundação de pavimentos de baixo volume de tráfego. Isso, porém não afasta a hipótese de altas deformações plásticas. Quanto à deformação resiliente, observou-se ainda a ineficácia do atual método de dimensionamento de pavimentos flexíveis, que não considera o módulo de resiliência dos materiais de pavimentação, resultando no predomínio de ruptura por fadiga, com exceção do solo denominado de CB que poderá levar o pavimento a ruptura por excesso de afundamento de trilha de roda.

ABSTRACT The pavement is considered a system of multiple finite layers, subject to tensions, deformations and displacements from cyclical traffic demands. The foundation of the structure must have support capacity compatible with the intensity and frequency with which it will be requested. From this perspective, the present study evaluates the performance of four soils with different geological origins, usually found in road subgrades in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, based on the principles of Pavement Mechanics. The methodology applied in this study consisted of numerical simulations assisted by two computational programs: AEMC/SisPav and AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design. The mechanistic analyzes were performed to evaluate the soil response to resilient deformation and shear strength, important properties in the use of paving soils. The results showed that the resilient deformation has a preponderant role in the performance of the materials, since, for the analyzed soils, there is no evidence of shear rupture, both as a road subgrade material and as a foundation of low traffic pavements. This, however, does not rule out the hypothesis of high plastic deformations. Regarding the resilient deformation, it was also observed the inefficiency of the current flexible pavement design method, which does not consider the resilience modulus of the paving materials, resulting in the predominance of fatigue rupture, with the exception of the CB soil, which could lead to pavement to rupture by excessive wheel track rutting.

Resumo Objetivou-se identificar dentre os componentes da síndrome metabólica (SM) o que mais interfere na forma da face em idosos. Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico, transversal, realizado com idosos residentes de Aiquara-BA. Foram obtidas imagens faciais da vista frontal e a SM foi classificada segundo o National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment PanelIII, revisado. A partir da função discriminante, validação cruzada e a distância D2 Mahalanobis, foram extraídas as variações da forma em função da SM. Para avaliar a influência dos componentes da SM na forma da face, utilizou-se a Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP). Participaram 193 idosos e foram identificadas diferenças significativas na forma da face em relação a SM (p<0,01) em ambos os sexos. Para os homens, o ACP 1 foi o HDL-C, este explicou 37% da variação total. Pelo biplot, o HDL-C está associado aos indivíduos que não possuem SM e em idosos com SM, houve uma correlação entre a circunferência da cintura e os triglicerídeos. Para as mulheres, o ACP 1 representou 33,2% da variação total, explicado pelos triglicerídeos. Pelobiplot, houve uma relação entre glicose e circunferência da cintura. Nas mulheres, o HDL-C está relacionado com quem não tem SM. As variações faciais acometidas pela SM, não foram decorrentes da ação de um dos componentes da mesma, mas das relações entre eles. Assim, a morfometria geométrica se mostra como método promissor e possibilita identificar a partir da forma da face fatores de risco cardiovascular e metabólico.

Abstract The aim of this study was to identify the metabolic syndrome (MS) components mostly influencing face shape in elderly individuals. This is a cross-sectional epidemiological study carried out with elderly individuals living in Aiquara County, Bahia State. Facial images at frontal view and MS were classified according to the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III (revised version). Discriminant function, cross validation and distance Mahalanobis D2 were used to extract face shape variations due to MS. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to evaluate MS components’ influence on face shape. The total of 193 elderly individuals were selected; there were significant differences in face shape due to MS (p <0.01) in both sexes. PCA 1 showed HDL-C in men, which accounted for 37% of the total variation. HDL-C in biplot is associated with individuals who do not have MS and with elderly individuals with MS - there was correlation between waist circumference and triglycerides. PCA 1 represented 33.2% of the total variation in women; this outcome is explained by triglycerides. There was association between blood glucose and waist circumference in biplot. HDL-C is related to women who do not have MS. Facial variations affected by MS did not derive from the action of any of the MS components, but from the association between them. Thus, geometric morphometrics emerges as a promising method that makes it possible identifying heart disease and metabolic risk factors according to face shape features.

Resumo: O vigor das sementes pode ser determinante para o seu desempenho em campo, especialmente sob condições de restrição hídrica. O girassol é uma cultura sujeita as essas condições no campo, e assim, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as alterações fisiológicas e antioxidativas em sementes de girassol submetidas à restrição hídrica. Foram utilizados dois lotes da cv. Hélio 253 diferindo quanto ao vigor. Após a caracterização inicial, as sementes foram colocadas para germinar sob os potenciais de 0,0; -0,2; -0,4; -0,6 e -0,8 MPa e avaliadas quanto a germinação, primeira contagem e comprimento de parte aérea e raiz primária. Foram avaliadas também as atividades das enzimas antioxidativas SOD, CAT, POX e APX aos 0, 2, 4 e 6 dias após a semeadura. A restrição hídrica provocou decréscimo na germinação e menor crescimento das plântulas independentemente do nível de vigor das sementes. A atividade da SOD foi semelhante para os dois lotes, com redução aos quatro dias após a semeadura. A atividade da CAT foi afetada de modo diferente ao longo da germinação dos dois lotes sendo, em geral, mais alta no lote de maior vigor. Nas sementes de maior vigor, houve menor atividade da POX nos tratamentos de restrição hídrica em relação ao controle. Em geral, sementes de menor vigor possuem menor capacidade de ativação de enzimas antioxidativas, principalmente as peroxidases.

Abstract: Seed vigor may be determinant for field performance, especially under water restriction conditions. Sunflower is a crop subject to these conditions in the field and, therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological and antioxidant changes in sunflower seeds under water restriction. Two lots of sunflower seeds (cv. Hélio 253) with different vigor levels were used. After initial characterization, seeds were placed to germinate under water potentials of 0.0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6 and -0.8 MPa and evaluated by tests of germination, first germination count, shoot length and primary root length. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT, POX and APX were also evaluated at 0, 2, 4 and 6 days after sowing. Water restriction led to a decrease in germination and slower seedling growth, regardless of seed vigor level. SOD activity was similar in the two lots, with reduction in activity four days after sowing. CAT activity was affected differently during germination in the two lots, and it was generally higher in the most vigorous lot. In higher vigor seeds, there was lower POX activity in water restriction treatments compared to the control. In general, seeds of lower vigor have lower capacity for activation of antioxidant enzymes, especially peroxidases.

Abstract We evaluated the genetic variability of a collection of Jatropha curcas germplasm, represented by 93 accessions, using microsatellite markers. Among the 60 markers tested, five of them detected polymorphisms, with a total of 11 alleles and mean of 2.2 alleles per loci. These five markers enabled the quantification of genetic variability through estimates of expected (He=0.42) and observed (Ho=0.64) heterozygosity, Shannon-Weaver index (H'=0.62), coefficient of inbreeding (ƒ=-0.44) and the formation of 11 clusters. Simultaneously, 14 accessions randomly sampled among the 93 and represented by seven plants each, were analyzed with these same five markers to quantify the within and between variability. Most of the genetic variation (92.58%) was contained within the accessions. These analyses revealed, for the first time, expressive genetic variability to be explored in this collection. The accessions UFVJC 05, 07, 12, 18, and 53 presented expressive variability among them with potential for the constitution of a base population for the breeding program.
