Islet transplantation represents a therapeutic option for type 1 diabetes (T1D). Long-term viability of transplanted islets requires improvement. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been proposed as adjuvants for islet transplantation facilitating grafting and functionality. Stem cell aggregation provides physiological interactions between cells and enhances the in situ concentration of modulators of inflammation and immunity. We established a hanging-drop culture of adult human skin fibroblast-like cells as spheroids, and skin spheroid-derived cells (SphCs) were characterized. We assessed the potential of SphCs in improving islet functionality by cotransplantation with a marginal mass of allogeneic islets in an experimental diabetic mouse model and characterized the secretome of SphCs by mass spectrometry-based proteomics. SphCs were characterized as multipotent progenitors and their coculture with anti-CD3 stimulated mouse splenocytes decreased CD4+ T cell proliferation with skewed cytokine secretion through an increase in the Th2/Th1 ratio profile. SphCs-conditioned media attenuated apoptosis of islets induced by cytokine challenge in vitro and importantly, intratesticular SphCs administration did not show tumorigenicity in immune-deficient mice. Moreover, SphCs improved glycemic control when cotransplanted with a marginal mass of allogeneic islets in a diabetic mouse model without pharmacological immunosuppression. SphCs' protein secretome differed from its paired skin fibroblast-like counterpart in containing 70% of up- and downregulated proteins and biological processes that overall positively influenced islets such as cytoprotection, cellular stress, metabolism, and survival. In summary, SphCs improved the performance of transplanted allogeneic islets in an experimental T1D model, without pharmacological immunosuppression. Future research is warranted to identify SphCs-secreted factors responsible for islets' endurance.

RESUMO: No Estado de Minas Gerais, a região Norte constitui um dos principais núcleos de produção de banana. A interferência de plantas daninhas pode reduzir o crescimento da cultura e, consequentemente, levar à redução na produção e qualidade dos frutos. Portanto, objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a interferência de plantas daninhas na produção do primeiro e segundo ciclos da bananeira ‘Prata-Anã’. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com dez tratamentos e três repetições, avaliadas em dois ciclos de cultivo. Os tratamentos foram constituídos de dez períodos de controle das plantas daninhas a partir do plantio: sem controle; controle em todo o período experimental; controle apenas no primeiro mês após o plantio; controle até o segundo; terceiro; quarto; quinto; sexto; oitavo; e décimo mês após o plantio. Avaliaram-se na colheita características agronômicas e produtivas da bananeira ‘Prata-Anã’. A manutenção da bananeira ‘Prata-Anã’ sem a convivência com plantas daninhas por até 30 dias após o plantio foi suficiente para obtenção de frutos com qualidade e produtividade satisfatória tanto no primeiro quanto no segundo ciclo de produção, sem alterar os ciclos vegetativos e reprodutivos.

ABSTRACT: In the state of Minas Gerais, the northern region is one of the main banana production cores. Weed interference can reduce crop growth and, consequently, lead to reduced yield and fruit quality. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the interference of weeds in the production of the first and second cycles of ‘Prata-Anã’ bananas. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with ten treatments and three replicates, evaluated in two crop cycles. The treatments were ten periods of weed control, from planting: without control; control throughout the whole experimental period; control only in the first month after planting; control until the second; third; fourth; fifth; sixth; eighth and tenth months after planting. The agronomic and productive characteristics of the ‘Prata-Anã’ bananas were evaluated aton harvest. The maintenance of ‘Prata-Anã’ bananas without weed coexistence for up to 30 days after planting was enough to obtain fruits with satisfactory quality and productivity, both in the first and in the second production cycle, without altering the vegetative and reproductive cycles.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar a viabilidade econômica de vacas F1 de Holandês x Zebu de diferentes bases maternas e ordens de parto. Foram utilizados dados do Campo Experimental da Epamig (Felixlândia-MG). Analisaram-se 406 lactações de vacas F1 H x Z de diferentes bases maternas. Estimaram-se a receita e os custos operacional efetivo, operacional total e custo total. As F1 Holandês x Gir tiveram médias de custos maiores (R$ 3582,30), seguidas pelas F1 Holandês x Nelogir (R$ 3448,06), e o menor foi das F1 Holandês x Nelore (R$ 3145,07). A receita total foi maior para as vacas F1 Holandês x Gir e F1 Holandês x Nelogir, com valores de R$ 4394,96 e R$ 4245,61, respectivamente, e a menor receita foi para F1 Holandês x Nelore, com valor de R$ 3976,12. O lucro foi de R$ 812, 65; R$ 797,54 e R$ 831,04 para as F1 filhas de base materna Gir, Nelogir e Nelore, respectivamente. Todas as bases maternas são viáveis economicamente e podem ser utilizadas no sistema de produção de leite e bezerros para venda. Todas as ordens de parto de Holandês x Zebu estudadas são viáveis economicamente.

ABSTRACT The objective was to evaluate the economic viability of a milk production system of F1 Holstein x Zebu cows of different maternal bases and calving order. Lactations data of F1 Holtein x Zebu cows (n=406) of different maternal bases, from the experimental field of the EPAMIG at Felixlândia county (MG state, Brasil) were analyzed. Revenue, cost/effect of operation, total operating, and total cost have been estimated. F1 cows Holstein x Gir had averages of higher costs R$ 3582.30, followed by F1 cows Holstein x Nelogir R$ 3448.06; and the lowest was from cows F1 Holstein x Nellore with R$ 3145.07. The total revenue was higher for Holstein x Gir and Holstein x Nelogir with recipe values of R$ 4394.96 and R$ 4245.61 respectively, and the lowest value of R$ 3976.12 for Holstein x Nellore. The profits were R$812.65; R$ 797.54 and R$ 831.04 for animals of groups Holstein x Gir, Holstein x Nelogir and Holstein x Nellore respectively. All genetic groups are economically viable and can be used in the production of milk and calves for sale. All calving order of Holstein x Zebu studied are viable economically.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho relatar um caso de mieloma múltiplo (MM) em uma cadela com apresentação clínica atípica de rigidez da musculatura facial. Foram realizados hemogramas seriados, exames bioquímicos, sumário de urina, sorologia para leishmaniose, radiografias de crânio, citologia de medula óssea e eletroforese de proteínas séricas. O infiltrado plasmocitário em medula óssea >20%, a gamopatia monoclonal e as lesões compatíveis com lise óssea, observados no mielograma, eletroforese de proteínas e exame radiográfico, respectivamente, foram determinantes para conclusão diagnóstica de MM. A doença pode ter uma apresentação clínica variável em cães e representar um desafio ao diagnóstico na clínica de animais de companhia, principalmente em áreas endêmicas de doenças infecciosas que se manifestam com apresentações clínicas e laboratoriais semelhantes.

ABSTRACT This paper reports a case of multiple myeloma (MM) in a bitch with atypical clinical presentation of rigidity of the facial muscles. Hemogram, biochemical tests, urinalysis, serology for leishmaniasis, skull radiography, bone marrow cytology and serum protein electrophoresis were performed. The plasma cell infiltration in bone marrow was >20 %, the monoclonal gammopathy and lesions compatible with bone lysis observed in the myelogram, protein electrophoresis and radiographic examination respectively, were decisive for diagnostic conclusion of MM. The disease may have a variable clinical presentation in dogs and pose a challenge for diagnosis in the pet clinic, especially in endemic areas of infectious diseases that present with similar clinical and laboratory presentations.

O objetivo foi identificar o nível mais adequado de óxido de cálcio (CaO) no tratamento da cana-de-açúcar por meio da avaliação da composição química e a digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca. A cana-de-açúcar foi homogeneizada adicionando os níveis de CaO 0; 0,75; 1,5; 2,25; 3,0; 3,75 e 4,5% em porcentagem de matéria natural, por 24 horas. Os teores de matéria seca e matéria mineral aumentaram, ao passo que o teor de matéria orgânica da cana-de-açúcar diminuiu (P<0,05) de forma linear em função dos níveis de CaO. Não houve efeito dos níveis do CaO sobre o teor de proteína bruta e extrato etéreo. Os teores médios de fósforo mantiveram-se inalterados, porém ocorreu um aumento (P<0,05) no teor de cálcio. Os teores de fibra em detergente neutro, fibra em detergente ácido e celulose diminuíram linearmente em função dos níveis de CaO. Os teores médios da matéria seca indigestível e da fibra em detergente neutro indigestível tiveram redução significativa com o aumento dos níveis de CaO. Os resultados da digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca (DIVDM) mostraram-se diferentes entre cana-de-açúcar in natura e a com níveis de CaO. Níveis de CaO a partir de 1,5% melhoram o valor nutritivo e a DIVDM da cana-de-açúcar.

The aim of this study was to identify the most adequate level of calcium oxide (CaO) in the treatment of sugar cane by evaluating the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of dry matter. The sugar cane was homogenized with CaO levels 0, 0.75, 1.5, 2.25, 3.0, 3.75 and 4.5%, in natura matter, for 24 hours. The dry matter and mineral matter increased, while the organic matter of the sugar cane decreased (P <0.05) linearly as a result of the CaO levels. The CaO had no effect on the levels of crude protein and ether extract. The phosphorus concentration remained unchanged, but there was a significant increase (P<0.05) in the calcium content. The contents of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and cellulose decreased linearly with the levels of CaO. The average levels of indigestible dry matter and indigestible neutral detergent fiber significantly decreased with increasing levels of CaO. The results showed that the in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) was different between fresh sugar cane and sugar cane with added levels of CaO from 1.5%. The IVDMD and nutritional value of the sugar cane was improved by adding 1.5% CaO based on fresh content.

We report the case of a 71-year-old man with diagnosis of aortic valve stenosis for ten years, who came to hospital because of breathlessness during the previous two months and recent low intestinal hemorrhage. On admission, laboratory tests and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy revealed anemia and bleeding cecal angiodysplasia. The echocardiography study showed a severe aortic stenosis. Classical Heyde syndrome is described as the association of aortic stenosis, bleeding gastrointestinal angiodysplasia and secondary anemia. The antecedent of mediastinal radiotherapy for treatment of Hodgkin´s disease during his youth, and eventual late cardiac adverse effects that may include aortic or mitral valve disturbances are highlighted. Electrocoagulation with argonium was performed on the sites of active bleeding during the colonoscopy. In sequence, surgical replacement by bioprothesis was done on the aortic valve. The patient remains asymptomatic, under long-term outpatient surveillance, with normal control evaluations. The aim of this case study is to emphasize difficulties related to diagnosis, and to highlight the role of endoscopy and imaging studies to confirm a hypothesis of this underestimated condition.

Se presenta el caso de un varón de 71 años con estenosis aórtica diagnosticada diez años antes, que acude al hospital por disnea durante dos meses y reciente hemorragia digestiva baja. La analítica y la endoscopia oral y colonoscopia realizadas en el momento de la admisión revelaron anemia y angiodisplasia cecal con sangrado activo. El ecocardiograma mostró estenosis aórtica severa. El síndrome de Heyde clásico está descrito como asociación entre estenosis aórtica y sangrado por angiodisplasia gastrointestinal, con anemia secundaria. Se destaca el antecedente de radioterapia mediastinal para tratamiento de enfermedad de Hodgkin durante su juventud, y eventuales efectos adversos tardíos que pueden incluir trastornos de las válvulas aórtica y mitral. Durante la colonoscopia se realizó la electrocoagulación con argón del punto de sangrado activo. Posteriormente se realizó cirugía de sustitución valvular aórtica utilizando una bioprótesis. El paciente permanece asintomático, realizando un seguimiento ambulatorio a largo plazo, y con exámenes de control normales. El objetivo de este estudio es enfatizar las dificultades relacionadas al diagnóstico, y resaltar el papel de los estudios endoscópicos y de imágenes para confirmar una hipótesis de esta entidad subestimada.

Immobilization, used in clinical practice to treat traumatologic problems, causes changes in muscle, but it is not known whether changes also occur in nerves. We investigated the effects of immobilization on excitability and compound action potential (CAP) and the ultrastructure of the rat sciatic nerve. Fourteen days after immobilization of the right leg of adult male Wistar rats (n=34), animals were killed and the right sciatic nerve was dissected and mounted in a moist chamber. Nerves were stimulated at a baseline frequency of 0.2 Hz and tested for 2 min at 20, 50, and 100 Hz. Immobilization altered nerve excitability. Rheobase and chronaxy changed from 3.13±0.05 V and 52.31±1.95 µs (control group, n=13) to 2.84±0.06 V and 59.71±2.79 µs (immobilized group, n=15), respectively. Immobilization altered the amplitude of CAP waves and decreased the conduction velocity of the first CAP wave (from 93.63±7.49 to 79.14±5.59 m/s) but not of the second wave. Transmission electron microscopy showed fragmentation of the myelin sheath of the sciatic nerve of immobilized limbs and degeneration of the axon. In conclusion, we demonstrated that long-lasting leg immobilization can induce alterations in nerve function.

Os estudos que tratam da interferência de plantas daninhas em agroecossistemas têm produzido resultados de pesquisa abundantes para campos de produção de grãos e pastagens; contudo, poucos trabalhos relatam o efeito da presença desse grupo de plantas em áreas degradadas isoladas para recuperação. Diante disso, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a influência do banco de sementes no solo no processo de restauração ambiental de uma área representativa de cerrado campestre pela presença de plantas daninhas gramíneas. Para avaliação do banco de sementes, foram selecionados três ambientes: dois degradados e um ambiente-referência (conservado) de cerrado campestre. O procedimento de coleta das amostras de solo ocorreu em duas estações (seca e chuvosa), e as amostras foram avaliadas em 300 dias. Foram verificadas, durante a avaliação, apenas seis espécies nativas, e somente duas com hábito de vida arbóreo. A maior parte das sementes germinadas para os ambientes degradados, em ambas as coletas, foram identificadas como invasoras na área de estudo. Nesse sentido, o banco de sementes do solo local não é suficiente para que haja recuperação por meio da sucessão ecológica dessas áreas, sendo recomendado o uso de técnicas visando acelerar a restauração desses ambientes.

Studies dealing with the interference of weeds in agro-ecosystems have obtained abundant results for grain production fields and pastures. However, few studies have reported the effect of the presence of such a group of isolated plants on degraded areas under recovery. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the influence of the soil seed bank on the process of environmental restoration of a representative area of campestre cerrado due to the presence of weed grasses. To assess the seed bank, three environments were selected: two degraded environments and one reference-environment (preserved) of campestre cerrado. Soil samples were collected in two seasons (dry and wet), and evaluated in three hundred days. During the evaluation, only six native species and only two species with a habit of arboreal life were found. Most of the seeds which were germinated for the degraded environments in both collections were identified as invasive in the study area. In this sense, the local soil seed bank is not considered sufficient for recovery through ecological succession in these areas, and the use of techniques to accelerate the restoration of these environments is strongly recommended.

Gastric lipoma is considered a rare condition that may constitute a challenging diagnosis. A 51-year-old woman presented dysphagia and abdominal pain, and an upper digestive endoscopic study disclosed a gastric tumor located in the submucosa of the pyloric antrum. Conclusive diagnosis was established after repeated endoscopic biopsies, and the patient was subjected to an atypical gastrectomy, which evolved into a pyloric stenosis. This complication was appropriately corrected and the patient remains symptomless, under outpatient surveillance.

Lipoma gástrico es un hallazgo muy raro que suele constituir un desafío diagnóstico. Una mujer con 51 años presentó disfagia y dolor abdominal; en una endoscopia digestiva superior se encontró un tumor gástrico submucoso localizado en el antro pilórico. Se hicieron biopsias endoscópicas para establecer el diagnóstico. Esta paciente se sometió a una gastrectomía atípica, que ocasionó estenosis del píloro. Esta complicación fue adecuadamente tratada, y la paciente se mantiene sin síntomas con control ambulatorio.

We report the case of a man with a diagnosis of invasive gastric adenocarcinoma associated with scattered osteoblastic metastases. This 65-year-old patient was admitted with nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, in addition to loss of weight (13 Kg in 3 months). Upper digestive endoscopy revealed extensive infiltrating changes in the body of the stomach, and histopathologic data confirmed the diagnosis of a Borrmann IV gastric adenocarcinoma. Complementary exams were indicative of a gastric cancer with bone metastases, characterized by disseminated osteoblastic images of the scintigraphy of the skeleton. Palliative chemotherapy was the treatment of first choice. High serum levels of CA 19-9, CEA and alkaline phosphatase can constitute useful indicative tools of this challenging condition. Images from a scintigraphy study of the skeleton can characterize the type and extension of bone metastases. The aim of this case study is to report a case of a very uncommon condition, considering that disseminated osteoblastic metastases rarely develop in this kind of tumor.

Presentamos un caso de adenocarcinoma gástrico infiltrante asociado con metástasis osteoblásticas diseminadas. Un paciente de 65 años ingresó con náuseas, vómitos y dolor abdominal asociados con pérdida de peso (13 Kg en 3 meses). La endoscopia digestiva objetivó extensas alteraciones infiltrativas del cuerpo gástrico y los datos histopatológicos confirmaron el diagnóstico de adenocarcinoma gástrico Borrmann IV. Exámenes complementarios fueran indicativos de cáncer gástrico con metástasis óseas, caracterizadas por imágenes osteoblásticas diseminadas de la cintilografía del esqueleto. Se le administró quimioterapia paliativa como primera opción. Se elevó CA 19-9, CEA y apareció fosfatasis alcalina en el suero un indicador útil del diagnóstico. La extensión y el tipo de metástasis óseas pueden ser imágenes de cintilografías del esqueleto. Este caso tiene como objetivo describir la presencia de metástasis osteoblásticas diseminadas que raramente son producidas por este tipo de tumor.

Avaliaram-se o desempenho e as características bioquímicas de leitões desmamados, utilizando-se aditivos alternativos em substituição aos antibióticos. Foram utilizados 480 leitões machos, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, composto por cinco tratamentos. A ração foi à base de milho, farelo de soja e um núcleo comercial para leitões. Os tratamentos consistiram em T1: ração sem aditivos, T2: dieta basal com antibiótico, T3: dieta basal com adição de prebiótico, T4: dieta basal com adição de probiótico e T5: dieta basal com adição de simbiótico. Foram avaliados peso corporal, ganho de peso, consumo de ração e conversão alimentar. Em 50 amostras de sangue de leitões, sendo 10 amostras de cada tratamento, avaliaram-se as concentrações séricas de proteínas totais, de albumina e globulina, a relação albumina:globulina e a fosfatase alcalina, creatinina, alanina aminotransferase, aspartato aminotransferase, gama- glutamiltransferase, colesterol, ureia, cálcio e fósforo e a relação cálcio:fósforo. A substituição de antibióticos por aditivos alternativos não influenciou o desempenho nem as características bioquímicas dos leitões.

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance and biochemical parameters in weaned piglets using alternative supplements to replace antibiotics. A total of 480 male pigs were used, randomly distributed in delineation with five treatments. The feed was based on corn, soybean meal and a commercial core for piglets. The treatments were T1: diet without supplements or basal diet, T2: basal diet with antibiotics, T3: basal diet with added probiotic, T4: basal diet with added probiotic and T5: basal diet with addition of symbiotic. In the experiment we evaluated performance characteristics, body weight, weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion. In the second part of the experiment, we evaluated the biochemical parameters of piglets used in the first experiment, fifty blood samples, ten samples of each treatment, were taken, and after separation of the clot, the serum was frozen at -20°C. Subsequently we analyzed the serum levels of total protein, albumin, globulin, albumin/globulin, ALP, creatinine, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma glutamyltransferase, cholesterol, urea, calcium, phosphorus and calcium/phosphorus ratio. No significant differences in biochemical parameters or in the performance of piglets submitted to different diets were found.

Avaliaram-se o fracionamento de carboidratos e a degradabilidade in situ da matéria seca (MS) e da fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) da cana-de-açúcar tratada com óxido de cálcio (CaO). Foram testadas as porcentagens de 0; 0,75; 1,5; 2,25; 3,0; 3,75 e 4,5% de CaO, e o material testemunha (cana-de-açúcar in natura) para a avaliação do fracionamento de carboidratos, e as porcentagens de 0; 1,5; 3,0 e 4,5% de CaO para a avaliação da degradabilidade in situ da MS e da FDN. O CaO foi adicionado em pó na cana-de-açúcar, em porcentagem da matéria natural, por 24 horas. A porcentagem de inclusão de CaO na cana-de-açúcar proporcionou valores mais baixos para teores de carboidratos totais (CT) comparados aos valores da cana-de-açúcar in natura. Observou-se crescimento linear das frações A+B1 e B2, e redução na fração C da cana-de-açúcar em função da porcentagem de CaO. Os maiores valores de fração insolúvel potencialmente degradável da MS e menores de fração indigestível (Ip) da FDN foram observados na cana-de-açúcar com 3,0 e 4,5% de CaO. A adição de 3,0 e 4,5% de CaO na cana-de-açúcar promove diminuição da fração indigestível dos carboidratos e melhores taxas de degradação ruminal tanto da MS quanto da FDN.

Were evaluated the fractioning of carbohydrates and in situ dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of sugarcane treated with calcium oxide (CaO). Levels 0, 0.75, 1.5, 2.25, 3.0, 3.75 and 4.5% CaO, and the material witness (sugarcane in nature) were tested for the assessment of fractioning of carbohydrates and levels 0, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5% CaO for the evaluation of in situ DM and NDF. The levels of CaO were added in powder form, as a percentage of natural matter in sugarcane for 24 hours. The inclusion levels of CaO in sugarcane showed lower values for the total carbohydrates (TC) when compared with sugarcane in natura. A linear growth of the fractions A + B1 and B2 was observed, as well as a decrease in C fraction of sugarcane depending on the levels of CaO. The highest values of insoluble fraction potentially degradable in rumen and the lower values of NDF indigestible fraction (Ip) were observed in sugarcane with 3.0 and 4.5% CaO. The addition of 3.0 and 4.5% CaO to sugarcane decreased the indigestible carbohydrates fraction and promotes better rates of ruminal degradation of both DM and NDF.

Corticosteroid-induced lipomatosis is not a rare condition, but lipoma in the central veins has scarcely been described. According to the databases consulted, this is the first report of a lipoma within the central veins coexistent with long-term use of corticosteroid. It involved a 47-year-old male under treatment for pulmonary sarcoidosis with prednisone. Computerized tomography of the thorax was performed and incidentally the images showed a mass within the central veins with the characteristics of lipoma. He was asymptomatic and refused surgical procedures. The intraluminal lipoma originated in the right brachiocephalic and subclavian veins. Control tomography showed a slow development of this lipoma, without obstructive effects or malignant features. Oral prednisone was changed for methotrexate. The patient is asymptomatic and under longstanding out-patient surveillance. Corticosteroid treatments for sarcoidosis can play a role in the development of intravascular lipoma, but this association is not well defined. Case reports could contribute to clarifying whether this relationship is causal or merely casual.

La lipomatosis inducida por glucocorticoides no es una entidad rara, pero hay pocos casos descritos de lipoma en las venas centrales. Según la bibliografía, éste es el primer trabajo de un paciente con un lipoma en las venas centrales coexistente con el uso de glucocorticoide a largo plazo. Se trata de un hombre de 47 años, en tratamiento de sarcoidosis pulmonar con prednisona. Se realizó tomografía computarizada de tórax e incidentalmente, las imágenes mostraron una masa en las venas centrales, con características de lipoma. El paciente estaba asintomático y se negó a la realización del procedimiento quirúrgico. Este lipoma intraluminal se originó en la vena braquiocefálica y subclavia derecha. El estudio tomográfico demostró un desarrollo lento del lipoma, sin efectos obstructivos ni características malignas. La prednisona oral se cambió por metotrexate. El paciente permanece asintomático, realizando un seguimiento ambulatorio. Los tratamientos con glucocorticoides para sarcoidosis pueden desempeñar un papel importante en el desarrollo de lipomas intravasculares, pero esta asociación no está bien definida. Se desconoce si la relación de esta asociación es causal o meramente casual.

We report the case of a 95-year-old woman who had acute esophageal lesions while being treated with oral ciprofloxacin for an acute cystitis. On day 2 of treatment, she reported retroesternal pain with a globus sensation, and presented hematemesis and melena. There was no history of gastric or esophageal disturbances. An upper digestive endoscopy showed bleeding lesions on the middle third of the esophagus. Ciprofloxacin was discontinued and a proton pump inhibitor was administered. One week later, the endoscopic aspect of the esophagus was normal. Only two cases of ciprofloxacin-induced esophageal lesions have been reported previously. A short review of this kind of esophageal injuries is presented, focusing on the main risk factors and preventive measures.

Presentamos el caso de una mujer de 95 años con lesiones agudas del esófago que tomaba ciprofloxacino por cistitis aguda. La paciente refería dolor y sensación de cuerpo estraño retroesternal asociados con hematemesis y melena, después del segundo día de tratamiento. No había antecedentes personales de trastornos gástricos o esofágicos. La endoscopia digestiva objetivó lesiones sangrantes en el tercio medio del esófago. El uso de ciprofloxacino fue suspendido y se utilizó un inhibidor de la bomba de protones. Una semana más tarde, el aspecto endoscópico del esófago fue considerado normal. Dos únicos casos de lesiones esofágicas inducidas por ciprofloxacino han sido previamente publicados. Se presenta una revisión breve acerca de este tipo de lesiones del esófago, con énfasis a los principales factores de riesgo y medidas de prevención.

Os vírus são capazes de induzir desordens metabólicas e estruturais nas células vegetais, as quais podem variar com a espécie viral e a suscetibilidade da planta. Neste enfoque, videiras (Vitis vinifera) com e sem sintomas de infecção viral, das cvs. Cabernet Franc e Cabernet Sauvignon, em dois vinhedos comerciais, foram avaliadas comparativamente quanto ao potencial fotossintético (fotossíntese de saturação luminosa, radiação de saturação, ponto de compensação de luz, taxa de respiração no escuro, rendimento quântico aparente, clorofilas total, a e b), quanto ao metabolismo de carbono foliar (açúcares solúveis totais e amido) e quanto a qualidade enológica da uva produzida (sólidos solúveis totais - ºBrix, densidade, pH e acidez total titulável no mosto - ATT; intensidade total da cor e índice de polifenóis totais na casca). Nas plantas sintomáticas foram detectados o Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 2 (GLRaV-2) e o Rupestris stem pitting-associated virus (RSPaV) pelo teste ELISA para seis vírus, os quais provocaram reduções significativas na clorofila e no potencial fotossintético, em ambas as cultivares. As folhas de plantas infectadas também apresentaram acúmulos significativos de carboidratos, caracterizando um bloqueio no transporte de carbono desses órgãos. Quanto à qualidade enológica da uva, no momento da colheita as plantas infectadas apresentaram uvas com nível de maturação significativamente menor, considerando todos os parâmetros tecnológicos do mosto (ºBrix, densidade, pH, ATT e polifenóis). De modo geral, destaca-se que estes vírus podem comprometer diretamente a capacidade produtiva e a qualidade da produção destas cultivares.

Viruses may induce metabolic and structural disarray in plant cells to varying degrees depending on viral species and plant susceptibility. With this focus, grapevine plants (Vitis vinifera) cvs. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, symptomless and showing symptoms of virus-infection, in two commercial vineyards were comparatively analyzed. The parameters were: 1. photosynthetic potential (light-saturated rate of photosynthesis, saturating light intensities, light compensation point, dark respiration rate, apparent quantum yield, chlorophyll a and b); 2. foliar carbon metabolism (total soluble sugars and starch), and 3. enologic quality of the produced grapes (total soluble solids - ºBrix, density, pH and titerable total acidity in the must; total color intensity and total polyphenols in berry skins) were recorded. In symptomatic plants Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 2 (GLRaV-2) and Rupestris stem pitting-associated virus (RSPaV) have been detected by ELISA carried out for six viruses. The virus infections induced significant reductions in chlorophyll content and in photosynthetic potential of both cultivars. Leaves of infected plants also showed significant accumulation of carbohydrates, suggesting a blockage of carbon transport out of these tissues. Concerning the enologic quality and based on technological parameters of the must (ºBrix, density, titerable total acidity and polyphenols), grapes of infected plants showed at harvest a significantly lower level of maturation. These viruses directly affect the productive capacity as well as the quality of the grapes produced by these cultivars.
