Resumo Este artigo investiga nexos entre formas expressivas e interações sociais a partir de uma análise etnográfica da glosa - uma prática de improviso poético no sertão nordestino - e suas transformações contemporâneas. Para tal, buscou-se conciliar fundamentos teóricos da linguística (estruturação dos códigos comunicativos), da antropologia linguística (a centralidade da situação e dos contrastes entre diferentes códigos) e da etnomusicologia (a necessidade de captar a dimensão concreta, acessível aos sentidos, das estruturas e códigos culturalmente construídos). São referências nesse sentido as contribuições de Steven Feld à análise das artes verbais e suas reflexões teóricas sobre os trânsitos epistemológicos entre linguística e etnomusicologia e sobre as relações entre linguagem, música, som e vida social.

Abstract This article investigates the links between expressive forms and social interactions from an ethnographic analysis of the glosa - a practice of poetic improvisation from the Sertão in the Brazilian Northeast - and its contemporaneous transformations. For such, we sought to combine theoretical frameworks of linguistics (structuring of communicative codes), linguistic anthropology (the central role of situation and contrast among various codes), and ethnomusicology (the need to capture the concrete, sense-accessible dimension of culturally established codes and structures). Steven Feld’s contributions to analyzing verbal arts and his theoretical thoughts on epistemological flows between linguistics and ethnomusicology and on the relations between language, music, sound, and social life are, thus, reference.

Neste artigo, propomos uma reflexão acerca da etnografia, tendo como foco a aprendizagem e o engajamento do pesquisador nas práticas que pesquisa. Partindo das discussões sobre este tema na etnomusicologia e na antropologia da técnica, traçamos um diálogo entre as pesquisas de campo dos autores sobre repentistas na região Nordeste e pescadores na Amazônia. A partir de então são pensadas as implicações da inserção do antropólogo na atividade etnografada, vista não como um fim em si mesmo, mas como estratégia privilegiada para acessar conhecimentos e valores tácitos e irrefletidos, perceber as hierarquias entre diversos tipos de relações envolvidas no desempenho de uma atividade e analisar suas formas peculiares de aprendizagem. A comparação entre as etnografias da cantoria e da pesca não é trazida aqui para defender o privilégio epistemológico generalizado da prática, do corpo ou da experiência, em detrimento das estruturas, do discurso ou do pensamento. A própria comparação entre os engajamentos numa atividade eminentemente verbal e noutras que envolvem sobretudo habilidades perceptivo-motoras já nos distancia deste recorte. O engajamento é tomado aqui não como afirmação de princípio, mas como uma postura etnográfica maleável, capaz de favorecer a adequação entre as questões antropológicas e os regimes de abordagem empírica em situações particulares.

This article proposes a reflection on "ethnography", focusing on the researcher's learning of and engagement with research practices. Starting from discussions of this theme in ethnomusicology and in the anthropology of techniques, we trace a dialogue across the research fields of the authors among repentistas in the Brazilian Northeast and fishermen in Amazonia. Through this dialogue, we reflect on the implications of the anthropologist's insertion in ethnographic activity, which is not seen to be an end in itself, but a privileged means for accessing knowledge and tacit values, perceiving hierarchies among the diverse types of relations involved in the execution of an activity and analyzing peculiar forms of learning. The comparison between ethnographies of singing and fishing is not intended to affirm the epistemological privilege of practice, the body or experience over structures, discourse or thought. The very nature of the comparison, rooted in the engagements of an activity that is eminently verbal and another that mostly involves perceptive and motor abilities, distances our aim from this approach. Engagement is here understood not as a general principle, but as a malleable ethnographic posture, capable of adequately favouring the accomodation of anthropological questions and empirical regimes in specific situations.

Este estudo aborda a cantoria, ou repente, uma modalidade de poesia cantada e improvisada praticada na região Nordeste do Brasil. Seus poetas são denominados repentistas, cantadores ou violeiros, e sempre cantam em duplas, alternando-se na composição de estrofes sguindo padrões bastante rígidos de métrica, rima e coerência temática. Há um conjunto de regras explicitadas em torno desses padrões, mas os repentistas improvisam seus versos com base em um fundamento prático, que é o ritmo poético incorporado. O improviso coloca o repentista em relação com modelos estéticos como o ritmo da poesia, os padrões melódicos e as regras da cantoria, ao mesmo tempo em que o põe em diálogo com o outro cantador e com as demandas e reações da platéia. O improviso, portanto, não é apenas a criação poética, mas também o desenrolar de um jogo de interação dos poetas com os outros sujeitos na situação da cantoria.

This study concerns the singing called repente or cantoria, a modality of improvised sung poetry, practiced in the Northeast region of Brazil. Its practitioners are called repentistas, cantadores or violeiros, and they always sing in duets, alternating in the composition of strophes according to strict parameters of meter, rhyme and thematic coherence. There is a set of rules formulated for this purpose, but the repentistas improvise their verses on a practical basis, such as the poetic rhythm incorporated. The improvisation places the repentista in relation to aesthetic models, such as the rhythm of the poetry, the melodic patterns and the singing rules, at the same time it puts him into a dialogue with the other singer and with the expectations and reactions of the audience. Resumo O repente ou cantoria é uma arte poético-musical comum no Nordeste do Brasil e caracteriza-se pela improvisação de estrofes, ou seja, pela sua composição no momento da apresentação. Cantando sempre em duplas, ao improvisar versos os repentistas dialogam um com o outro e com os ouvintes. E colocam-se em relação com modelos estéticos incorporados, como as regras poéticas, os padrões melódicos e harmônicos, os moldes rítmicos da poesia, as temáticas usuais etc., a partir dos quais devem criar textos originais. No improviso, o cantador guia-se por esses modelos estéticos, dentre os quais ressalto como o principal fundamento prático do repente o ritmo poético incorporado por esses poetas.

Abstract The poetical joust, or cantoria, is a poetic and musical art common in Northeast Brazil and is characterized by strophe improvisation, that is, by its making in the very moment of presentation. It is always sung in pairs of poets who, while improvising, dialogue with each other and with the public. They also place themselves in relationship with incorporated esthetic models, with poetic rules, melodic and harmonic patterns, the rhythmic patterns of this poetry, the usual themes and so on, departing from which they must create original texts. While improvising, the singer guides himself by these esthetic models, among which I highlight as the main practical foundation of improvised poetry the poetic rhythm incorporated by these poets.
