ABSTRACT. The fungus Monilinia fructicola, which causes brown rot in fruits, is one of the main peach pathogens. The emergence of fungicide-resistant fungus isolates, as well as the attempt to reduce sprays, favors adoption of other control strategies. Among them, one of the most important is genetic resistance. This study was carried out aiming to evaluate the susceptibility of 16 peach and 4 nectarine genotypes to brown rot, as well as to evaluate how well the sporulation area and diameter correlate with number of spores in the lesions. Both wounded and non-wounded fruits were inoculated with 10 μL of M. fructicola suspension. Wounded fruits from all genotypes (nectarines and peaches) showed susceptibility to M. fructicola, from 92 to 100% of incidence. The disease incidence was between 18 and 100% when non-wounded fruits were inoculated. High variability was detected for the fungus sporulation, in both wounded and non-wounded fruits, with ranges between 16 to 96% and 0 to 94%, respectively. The fungus sporulation was variable among the genotypes (between 0.1 to 96.0 conidia per mm2) and it is positively correlated with the diameter and area of sporulation. The genotypes Conserva 947, Conserva 1662, Conserva 672, Conserva 1600, and 'Bolinha', are the ones with less susceptible to brown rot.

RESUMO: Com o objetivo de padronizar avaliações da severidade da antracnose em frutos de feijoa elaborou-se e validou-se uma escala diagramática com os seguintes níveis de severidade: 2, 10, 20, 40, 70 e 100% de área superficial do fruto com lesão. A escala considerou os limites de severidade mínima e máxima da doença observados em campo e os níveis intermediários seguiram incrementos logarítmicos, obedecendo-se a “Lei do estímulo de Weber-Fechner”. A severidade foi estimada, por oito avaliadores sem experiência, em 50 frutos sem e com o auxílio da escala proposta. Em conclusão, a escala melhorou a avaliação da antracnose na feijoa. Oito genótipos de diferentes cruzamentos foram tolerantes à antracnose.

ABSTRACT: A diagrammatic scale of anthracnose in feijoa fruit was elaborated and validated in order to standardize disease severity assessments. The proposed scale showed six disease severity levels: 2, 10, 20, 40, 70 and 100% of the injured fruit surface. The scale took into account the minimum and maximum limits of disease severity observed in the field and the intermediate values followed logarithmic increments according to the Weber-Fechner stimulus-response law. Eight inexperienced raters validated the scale by quantifying the disease severity (using/not using the scale) of 50 feijoas with anthracnose symptoms. In conclusion, the scale improved the assessment of anthracnose in feijoa. Eight genotypes from different crosses were tolerant to anthracnose.

RESUMO: Os porta-enxertos são amplamente utilizados na viticultura devido à sua resistência aos estresses biótico e abiótico. Além disso, os porta-enxertos podem afetar o crescimento da videira e a qualidade dos frutos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a compatibilidade e o desenvolvimento inicial de videiras ‘BRS Magna’ enxertada em diferentes porta-enxertos. A técnica de enxertia em fenda foi utilizada. A porcentagem de sobrevivência variou de 0% (VR043-43) a 98,33% (101-14 MGT) e os porta-enxertos foram agrupados em três grupos distintos. Os porta-enxertos ‘IAC 313 Tropical’ e ‘SO4’ foram os de maior vigor em relação ao crescimento inicial da parte aérea. Já ‘IAC 572 Jales’, ‘Harmony’, ‘3309 Couderc’ e ‘Gravesac’ tiveram o melhor equilíbrio entre o crescimento inicial da parte aérea e o desenvolvimento das raízes. ‘BRS Magna’ quando enxertada nos porta-enxertos ‘IAC 313 Tropical’, ‘SO4’ e ‘101-14 MGT’ apresentou as maiores taxas de desenvolvimento inicial, enquanto que, quando enxertada em ‘R99’, ‘R110’ e ‘420A’, apresentou os menores valores iniciais de desenvolvimento.

ABSTRACT: Rootstocks are widely used in viticulture due to their resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. Additionally, rootstocks can affect vine growth and fruit quality. This study evaluated the compatibility and initial developmental of the ‘BRS Magna’ grafted on different rootstocks The wedge graft technique on woody cuttings was utilized. The percentage of survival ranged from 0% (‘VR043-43’) to 98.33% (‘101-14 MGT’), and the rootstock were grouped into three distinct groups. ‘IAC 313 Tropical’ and ‘SO4’ rootstocks were those ones with the highest vigor in relation to initial shoot growth. However, ‘IAC 572 Jales’, ‘Harmony’, ‘3309 Couderc’ and ‘Gravesac’ had the best balance between initial shoot growth and root development. The ‘BRS Magna’ when grafted on rootstocks ‘IAC 313 Tropical’, ‘SO4’ and ‘101-14 MGT’ showed the highest initial development rates, while when grafted on ‘R99’, ‘R110’ and ‘420A’, it showed the lowest initial development.

Resumo As cultivares de pêssego com maturação precoce apresentam dificuldades no processo de germinação natural das sementes. Para solucionar esse problema, a cultura de embriões in vitro pode ser considerada uma alternativa na qual as sementes encontram condições para completar a germinação e desenvolvimento de maneira satisfatória. Diferentes protocolos e meios de cultura foram testados para atender às necessidades nutricionais do embrião, mas estes ainda apresentam problemas e precisam ser otimizados. O objetivo do trabalho foi testar meios de cultura e concentrações de BAP a fim de aumentar a porcentagem de germinação de embriões e mudas viáveis de pessegueiro ‘BRS Kampai’, evitando possíveis anomalias no processo. O experimento foi realizado no Laboratório de Cultura de Tecidos da Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná, Campus Pato Branco. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi blocos casualizados, em fatorial 2x5, com quatro repetições, sendo a parcela representada por 15 embriões. Os meios de cultura testados foram MS e WPM com cinco concentrações de BAP (0, 1, 2, 3 e 4 mg L-1). No período in vitro, foi avaliada a germinação das sementes, através da atribuição de notas, e desenvolvimento dos embriões, mensurando-se os comprimentos de caulículo e radícula principal. No período de aclimatização, as plântulas foram avaliadas quanto à sobrevivência, comprimento do caule, plântulas viáveis e formação de rosetas. Considerando as condições sob as quais o experimento foi conduzido, concluiu-se que o meio de cultura MS com a adição de 1 mg L-1 de BAP permitiu uma maior porcentagem de germinação e plântulas viáveis para ‘BRS Kampai’.

Abstract Early-ripening peach cultivars present difficulties in the process of natural germination of seeds. In order to solve this problem, the culture of embryos in vitro can be considered an alternative, in which seeds find conditions to complete germination and development in a satisfactory way. Different protocols and culture media have been tested to meet the nutritional needs of the embryo, but they still have problems and need to be optimized. The objective of this work was to test culture media and BAP concentrations in order to increase the germination percentage of embryos and viable ‘BRS Kampai’ peach seedlings, avoiding possible anomalies in the process. The experiment was carried out at the Laboratory of Tissue Culture – “Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná”, Campus of Pato Branco. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, in 2x5 factorial, with four replicates, with plot being represented by 15 embryos. The culture media tested were MS and WPM with five BAP concentrations (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 mg L-1). In the in vitro period, seed germination was evaluated through the attribution of scores, and embryo development, measuring the length of stem and main root. During the acclimatization period, seedlings were evaluated for survival, stem length, viable seedlings and rosette formation. Considering the conditions under which the experiment was conducted, it was concluded that MS culture medium with the addition of 1 mg L-1 of BAP allowed higher germination percentage and viable ‘BRS Kampai’ peach seedlings.

Resumo Estudos da interação dos efeitos genéticos e ambientais, na morfogênese floral de pessegueiros cultivados em regiões de clima subtropical úmido, são importantes para verificar a adaptação e a seleção de novas cultivares. Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar os efeitos genéticos e ambientais identificando genótipos com maior adaptabilidade e estabilidade no comprimento de ramos e na densidade de gemas vegetativas e florais, de pessegueiros cultivados em clima subtropical úmido. Foram avaliados 12 genótipos de pessegueiro cultivados em Pato Branco, Paraná, em oito ciclos (2006/2007 a 2013/2014). Foram coletados dados de comprimento de ramos (CR), densidade de gemas florais (DGF) e densidade de gemas vegetativas (DGV), dados meteorológicos de temperatura, umidade e precipitação. Para análise de adaptabilidade e estabilidade, foi utilizada a metodologia GGE Biplot. CR foi influenciado pelas condições ambientais de temperatura e umidade relativa do ar. Maior tempo de exposição a temperaturas abaixo de 20 °C e acima de 30 °C, a amplitude térmica elevada e a umidade relativa do ar abaixo de 50% reduzem o crescimento de ramos. A DGV e a DGF são controladas predominantemente pelo fator genético. Para a DGV, os genótipos ‘Cascata 1055’ e ‘Conserva 681’ foram os mais adaptados. Para a DGF, os genótipos ‘Cascata 1055’, ‘BRS Bonão’, ‘Conserva 681’, ‘Cascata 967’ e ‘BRS Kampai’ apresentaram melhor adaptabilidade. Especialmente estes genótipos mais adaptados quanto à DGF podem ser recomendados para cultivo na região, pois devem apresentar maior estabilidade na produção de frutos também, independentemente das condições meteorológicas que ocorram durante o ciclo vegetativo e reprodutivo.

Abstract Studies on the interaction of genetic and environmental effects on floral morphogenesis in peach trees grown in humid subtropical climate provide important information related to adaptation and for assisting in the selection of new cultivars. This study aimed to verify the genetic and environmental effects and to identify peach tree genotypes with greater shoot length, vegetative bud, flower bud density adaptability and stability under humid subtropical climate conditions. Twelve peach tree genotypes were evaluated over a period of eight years, during the growing season (2006/07 to 2013/14) in Pato Branco-PR, Brazil. Data were collected for shoot length (SL), flower bud density (FBD) and vegetative bud density (VBD), as well as temperature, humidity and precipitation. For the analysis of adaptability and stability we used GEE Biplot methodology. SL was influenced by the temperature and relative humidity. Increased exposure time to temperatures below 20 °C and above 30 °C, high thermal amplitude and relative humidity of less than 50% reduced shoot growth. VBD and FBD were predominantly controlled by the genetic factor. For VBD, the genotypes ‘Cascata 1055’ and ‘Conserva 681’ were the most adapted. For FBD, the genotypes ‘Cascata 1055’, ‘BRS Bonão’, ‘Conserva 681’, ‘Cascata 967’ and ‘BRS Kampai’ presented better adaptability. The genotypes more adapted to the FBD can be recommended for cultivation in the humid subtropical climate, since they also present greater stability in the production of fruits, independently of the meteorological conditions that occur during the vegetative and reproductive season.

RESUMOO cálcio aumenta a conservação pós-colheita de maçãs. Por isso, são realizadas várias pulverizações via foliar em macieira. Devido à baixa mobilidade do cálcio no floema, a aplicação foliar pode ter baixa eficiência para suprir o cálcio nos frutos. Este trabalho objetivou verificar a eficiência de diferentes fontes de cálcio aplicadas ao solo, em comparação à aplicação foliar, nos teores de cálcio no solo, folhas e frutos, na produtividade e na qualidade de frutos de macieira ‘Fuji’. Foram aplicados os seguintes tratamentos: controle, cloreto de cálcio, gesso agrícola, Nitrabor®, cal hidratada e borra de celulose via solo e cloreto de cálcio via foliar. Para todas as fontes utilizadas no solo, aplicaram-se 80 kg de cálcio ha-1 ano-1. No tratamento via foliar foram realizadas dez pulverizações com cloreto de cálcio 0,4 %, durante o ciclo. O experimento foi conduzido em duas safras (2008/2009 e 2009/2010), utilizando-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, contendo duas macieiras por unidade experimental. Mesmo em solo com alto teor de cálcio, as fontes de cálcio aplicadas aumentam o teor de cálcio no solo e folhas, bem como a firmeza de maçãs armazenadas por 90 dias. O uso de gesso agrícola e de borra de celulose incrementam o cálcio na polpa de maçãs ‘Fuji’ após duas aplicações sucessivas (2009/2010). As fontes de cálcio aplicadas ao solo podem substituir a aplicação foliar comumente utilizada em pomares de macieira, visando a reduzir os custos de produção, desde que não haja restrição hídrica no pomar.

ABSTRACTCalcium increases postharvest conservation of apples. Consequently, several calcium foliar sprays are generally applied to apple trees. Due to the low mobility of calcium in the phloem, foliar sprays may have low efficiency to supply calcium in the fruits. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of different sources of calcium applied to the soil, compared to the foliar application, on the content of calcium in the soil, leaves and fruits, on yield and fruit quality of ‘Fuji’ apple trees. The following treatments were tested: control, soil application of calcium chloride, gypsum, Nitrabor®, hydrated lime and pulp sludge, and foliar application of calcium chloride. For all sources in the soil, 80 kg of calcium ha-1 year-1 were applied. For the foliar treatment, ten sprays with 0.4 % of calcium chloride were performed. The experiment was conducted in two seasons (2008/2009 and 2009/2010), in a complete randomized blocks design, with four replicates and two apple trees per plot. Even in a soil with high calcium content, the sources of calcium increase the calcium content in the soil and leaves, as well as the firmness of apples stored for 90 days. The use of gypsum and pulp sludge increase the calcium content in the flesh of ‘Fuji’ apples after two successive applications (2009/2010). The sources of calcium applied to the soil can replace the leaf application commonly used in apple orchards, in order to reduce production costs, provided there is no water restriction in the orchard.

Brazilian peach breeding programs have been established to improve peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] production, yield consistency, quality, and disease resistance. Every year several genotypes are selected and their traits must be assessed. This study aimed to evaluate adaptability and stability of fruit set and production of peach genotypes in a subtropical climate, using the GGE biplot methodology. The experimental design was completely randomized with three replicates (trees) in a factorial arrangement of 29 × 3 for genotype and growing season, respectively. The genotypes 'Conserva 1129', 'Rubimel', 'Kampai', 'Tropic Beauty', and 'Cascata 967' had the greatest adaptability and stability for fruit set. The genotypes 'Conserva 681', 'Santa Áurea', 'Atenas', 'Kampai', 'Cascata 962', 'Tropic Beauty' and 'Cascata 967' had the greatest production adaptability and stability. The GGE-biplot methodology classified the peach tree genotypes with regard to adaptability and stability of fruit set and production.

A embriocultura permite desenvolver embriões de sementes que não germinariam em condições convencionais de semeadura. Esta técnica é útil na obtenção de cultivares de pessegueiro com maturação precoce. O uso de genótipos diferentes faz com que sejam necessários ajustes ao protocolo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi testar quatro tipos de meio de cultura (WPM, SH, MS e SBH), em duas concentrações de sacarose (1,5 e 3%), a fim de avaliar qual a melhor combinação para o cultivo de embriões de pessegueiro in vitro. Os genótipos utilizados como modelo do estudo foram 'Conserva 1129', em 2009, e 'Conserva 844', em 2010. Avaliaram-se a germinação, o desenvolvimento na fase in vitro, o comprimento de caule, número de folhas, sobrevivência das plântulas e formação de rosetas, em casa de vegetação. Considerando as condições em que os experimentos foram conduzidos, pode-se concluir que a estratificação e a germinação de embriões imaturos de pessegueiro in vitro melhoram quando realizadas em meios com maior concentração salina e de sacarose.

The embryo culture technique allows developing embryos of the seeds that could not germinate in conventional planting conditions. This technique is very useful to improve breeding programmes of early-maturing peach cultivars. The use of different genotypes makes to be necessary adjustments to the protocol. The objective of this study was to test four culture medium (WPM, SH, MS and SBH) and two sucrose concentrations (1.5 and 3%) to find the best combination for growing peach embryos in vitro. The genotypes used as a model were 'Conserva 1129', in 2009, and 'Conserva 844', in 2010. There were evaluated the germination (quality of germination and percentage of normal germination) and in vitro development (roots and steam length, and number of leaves and secondary roots); the stem length, leaf number, percentage of embryo survival and formation of rosettes, during greenhouse establishment. Considering the conditions under which the experiments were conducted, it can be concluded that in vitro stratification and germination of immature peach embryos were improved when performed in media with higher salt concentration of sucrose.

Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o pegamento e desenvolvimento dos enxertos de duas espécies de Jabuticaba (Plinia spp.), testando diferentes tipos de garfos. Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com dez repetições, no esquema fatorial 2x3 (espécie x tipo de garfo), com a unidade experimental composta por uma planta. Utilizaram-se as espécies Plinia trunciflora e Plinia cauliflora enxertadas sobre P. cauliflora por garfagem de topo em fenda cheia, utilizando-se garfos herbáceos (diâmetro menor de 3mm), semi-lenhosos de baixo calibre (diâmetro de 3-5mm) e semi-lenhosos de médio calibre (diâmetro de 5-7mm). A espécie P. trunciflora proporcionou um número de brotações superior e um comprimento de brotação 44% inferior à espécie P. cauliflora. Para percentual de brotação, não se observou diferença significativa entre as espécies testadas. Os garfos semi-lenhosos de baixo calibre favoreceram o aumento significativo do pegamento e do número de brotação em comparação aos garfos herbáceos, não diferindo significativamente, no entanto, dos garfos semi-lenhosos.

This research aimed to evaluate craft success and development of two grafted species of Jabuticaba (Plinia spp.) using different methods of grafting. A Complete randomized experimental design was used with ten replicates, under a factorial scheme of 2x3 (species x diameter of stem cutting), and the experimental unit was composed by one plant. Plinia trunciflora and Plinia cauliflora were the scion species grafted on P. cauliflora by cleft grafting, using herbaceous cuttings (diameters smaller than 3mm), semi-woody cuttings of low caliber (diameter 3-5mm), and semi-woody cuttings of medium caliber (diameter 5-7mm). P. trunciflora presented the higher number of buddings but the length of buddings were 44% lower than P. cauliflora. Budding percentage was not significantly different among studied species. The semi-wood cuttings of low caliber increased significantly the number of buddings and graft success when compared to herbaceous cuttings, not presenting significant difference when compared to semi-woody cuttings of medium caliber herbaceous cuttings.
