Abstract The construction of dams causes changes in river variables, as a result of direct changes in their hydrological and biogeochemical cycles. One of the most notable changes is the flow regulation, which reduces seasonal events and the hydrostatic pressure exerted by freshwater, increasing the saltwater wedge intrusion into the system. Changing the salinity regime causes modifications in downstream ecosystems as well as in the distribution and composition of the fish fauna. In Brazil, the São Francisco River stands out, which has a system of cascading dams, built between the 70’s and 90’s. Because of these changes caused in the natural course of the river, this study aimed to analyze the patterns of composition and occurrence of the ichthyofauna at the mouth of the São Francisco River and relate them to the physical and chemical variables of the region. In order to evaluate the patterns of composition and occurrence of the fish fauna at the mouth of the São Francisco River, monthly trawls were conducted along the bank and physical and chemical variables were analyzed in the river channel over a period of one year. The relationship between abundance and species richness with environmental variables was verified using Generalized Linear Models. A total of 101,958 fish belonging to 87 taxa were caught, with emphasis on marine fish, both in number of individuals (99.92%) and in biomass (99.31%). A spatial gradient was detected, in which sites 1 and 2 were under marine influence, sites 3 and 4 represented the transition between the environments and site 5 was under the influence of brackish and freshwater. In general, the effect of the São Francisco River dams on the fish fauna was observed, with a predominance of fauna with more estuarine and less freshwater characteristics.

Resumo A construção de barragens provoca alterações nas variáveis dos rios, em decorrência de mudanças diretas em seus ciclos hidrológicos e biogeoquímicos. Uma das mudanças mais notáveis é a regulação do fluxo, que reduz os eventos sazonais e a pressão hidrostática exercida pela água doce, aumentando a intrusão das cunhas da água salgada no sistema. Mudar o regime de salinidade causa modificações nos ecossistemas a jusante, bem como na distribuição e composição da ictiofauna. No Brasil, destaca-se o Rio São Francisco, que possui um sistema de barragens em cascata, construído entre as décadas de 70 e 90. Por causa dessas alterações causadas no curso natural do rio, o presente estudo teve por objetivo analisar os padrões de composição e ocorrência da ictiofauna da foz do rio São Francisco e relacioná-los com as variáveis físicas e químicas da região. Para avaliar os padrões de composição e ocorrência da ictiofauna foram realizados arrastos mensais ao longo da margem e analisadas as variáveis físicas e químicas no canal do rio ao longo de um ano. A relação entre abundância e riqueza de espécies de peixes com as variáveis ambientais foi verificada por meio de Modelos Lineares Generalizados. Foram capturados 101.958 peixes pertencentes a 87 táxons, com destaque para peixes marinhos, tanto em número de indivíduos (99,92%) quanto em biomassa (99,31%). Um gradiente espacial foi detectado, em que os pontos 1 e 2 estavam sob influência marinha, os pontos 3 e 4 representavam a transição entre os ambientes e o ponto 5 estava sob a influência de água doce e salobra. De maneira geral, foi observado o efeito das barragens do rio São Francisco sobre a ictiofauna, com predomínio de fauna com características mais estuarinas e menos dulcícolas.

Resumo: A estrutura populacional do cavalo-marinho Hippocampus reidi (Ginsburg 1933) foi avaliada em um sistema estuarino no nordeste do Brasil. Um total de 425 capturas foram realizadas no estuário de Vaza-Barris e 232 indivíduos foram marcados com Elastômeros Fluorescentes de Implante Visível. A população foi estimada em 428 peixes. A curva de crescimento de von Bertalanffy mostra um crescimento mais acentuado durante os primeiros meses de vida, até cerca de 17 meses, e estabilização após os 16 cm e 27 meses de idade. O presente estudo indica que o estuário Vaza-Barris é o lar de populações residentes de cavalos-marinhos de focinho comprido. Além disso, essas populações utilizam raízes de mangue como principal substrato de fixação e apresentam características ecológicas bem definidas, como fidelidade de habitat e organização social altamente estruturada.

Abstract: The population structure of the longsnout seahorse Hippocampus reidi (Ginsburg 1933) was evaluated in an estuarine system in northeastern Brazil. A total of 425 captures were performed in the Vaza-Barris estuary and 232 individuals were marked with Visible Implant Fluorescent Elastomers. The population was estimated to be composed of 428 fish. The von Bertalanffy growth curve shows a steeper growth during the first months of life, up to about 17 months, and stabilization after 16 cm and 27 months of age. The hereby study indicates that the Vaza-Barris estuary is home to resident populations of longsnout seahorses. Moreover, these populations use mangrove roots as the main substrate for attachment and present well-defined ecological characteristics, such as habitat fidelity and highly structured social organization.

RESUMO: A tangerineira 'Montenegrina' ( Citrus deliciosa Tenore) é amplamente cultivada no sul do Brasil. Possui grande tendência à alternância de produção, necessitando de raleio de frutos. Contudo, os raleantes químicos estudados até hoje nesta cultivar não se demonstraram eficientes. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito do ácido 3,5,6-tricloro-2-piridiniloxiacético (3,5,6-TPA) sobre a produção e qualidade de frutos da tangerineira 'Montenegrina', em relação às opções de raleio químico previamente estudadas. Foram utilizados, como padrão, raleio manual e plantas sem raleio (controle). Realizaram-se aplicações de ethephon em três doses: 200mg L-1, 300mg L-1 e 200mg L-1 + 3% de ureia; e aplicações de 3,5,6-TPA, em quatro doses: 10, 20, 30 e 40mg L-1. Os frutos de árvores raleadas manualmente e de tratadas com 3,5,6-TPA a 40mg L-1 apresentaram maior tamanho médio, melhor distribuição de calibres comerciais e cores mais alaranjadas. Nenhum tratamento reduziu a alternância de produção. Aplicações de 40mg L-1 de 3,5,6-TPA como raleante químico, durante a queda fisiológica de frutos jovens, propiciaram efeito similar ao raleio manual sobre a produção e qualidade dos frutos de tangerineira 'Montenegrina'.

ABSTRACT: The 'Montenegrina' mandarin ( Citrus deliciosa Tenore) is widely cultivated in southern Brazil. This cultivar has a great tendency for alternate bearing, requiring thining of the fruit. However, the chemical thinners studied until now in this cultivar have not been successful. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyloxyacetic acid (3,5,6-TPA) on the production and fruit quality of the 'Montenegrina' mandarin, in comparison with hand thinning and the options of chemical thinning previously studied. Hand thinning and no thinning were used as controls. Ethephon was applied in three doses: 200mg L-1, 300mg L-1 or 200mg L-1 + 3% urea; or 3,5,6-TPA, in four doses: 10, 20, 30 or 40mg L-1. Fruits of the hand thinned trees and those treated with 40mg L-1 showed greater average size, greater distribution of commercial caliber and more orange colors. No treatment reduced alternate bearing. Applications of 40mg L-1 of 3,5,6-TPA as a chemical thinner, during the physiological drop of young fruit, had a similar effect that of hand thinning over yield and quality of fruits of 'Montenegrina' mandarin.

O presente estudo investigou a biologia reprodutiva do bagre amarelo Cathorops spixii (Agassiz, 1829) na Baía de Pinheiros, litoral do Paraná, Brasil. Os peixes foram coletados mensalmente no período de junho de 2003 a maio de 2004, com rede de arrasto de fundo. De cada exemplar foram tomados os dados de comprimento total, peso total, sexo e peso da gônada. As seis fases de desenvolvimento ovocitário (ovogênese) e os cinco estádios de desenvolvimento ovariano (escala de maturidade) foram determinadas por análises microscópicas dos ovários. Através dos valores individuais e media mensais do Índice gônado-somático (IGS) tratado para sexos separados, da freqüência relativa dos estádios de desenvolvimento ovariano e das análises histológicas durante o período de estudo foi possível determinar que o período reprodutivo de C. spixii dá-se entre os meses de setembro e novembro. Fêmeas apresentando ovários desovados ou em recuperação foram registradas nos meses de novembro a abril, com altos percentuais no período de dezembro a março. A desova foi caracterizada como sendo do tipo total.

The present study investigated the reproductive biology of Cathorops spixii (Agassiz, 1829) in Pinheiros Bay, littoral of Paraná State, Brazil. Fishes were captured monthly from June 2003 to May 2004 by using bottom trawls. For each individual, total body length, total weight, sex, and gonadal weight were recorded. The oogenesis (six ovarian follicle phases of development) and gonadal development stages (five stages) were also defined based on the histological examination of the ovaries. It was defined that the reproductive period of C. spixii extends from September to November, based on the analyses of individual gonadosomatic index (GSI) values distribution in relation to the sampling periods, on the monthly variation of the GSI mean values (Curve of Maturation), both for males and females, and on the monthly variation of the relative frequencies of the female maturation stages. The spawning period happened in the end of the spring and females with spawned ovaries were observed until middle autumn, among the months of November to April, being the spawning of the total type.
