Abstract: Objective: To describe the behavior of SARS-CoV-2 epidemic among workers affiliated to the Mexican Social Security Institute. Materials and methods: We analyzed Short Term Disability Claims due to Respiratory Diseases (RD-STDC), associated hospitalizations and deaths (March 1 - December 31, 2020). We estimated the attack rate (AR) for SARS-CoV-2, and relative risks (RR) of TWD-RD, hospitalization and deaths. Results: 1 730 334 workers received at least one RD-STDC. AR was higher in women and in both sexes it was lower in >60 years old. RR of hospitalization and death were higher in men and increased with age. Compared with RD-STDC of 2015-2019, the states of Durango, Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon had a higher RR of RD-STDC than the rest of the country. Conclusions: The SARS-CoV-2 epidemic impacted IMSS-affiliated workers significantly. We observed a 4.6 fold excess in RD-STDC compared to the expected frequency and nearly 1 million SARS-CoV-2 cases in this population. Our data suggest that the RD-STDC system can be used as an additional resource for epidemiological surveillance of emerging diseases.

Resumen: Objetivo: Describir el comportamiento de la epidemia de SARS-CoV-2 entre los trabajadores afiliados al Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). Material y métodos: Se analizaron las incapacidades temporales para el trabajo por enfermedades respiratorias (ITT-ER), las hospitalizaciones y defunciones asociadas durante el periodo del 1 marzo al 31 diciembre 2020. Se estimó la tasa de ataque (TA) por SARS-CoV-2, así como los riesgos relativos (RR) de ITT-ER, hospitalización y defunción. Resultados: De los trabajadores afiliados al IMSS, 8.8% (n=1 730 334) recibió al menos una ITT-ER. La TA fue mayor en mujeres y en ambos sexos fue menor en el grupo de >60 años. Los RR de hospitalización y defunción fueron mayores en hombres y aumentaron con la edad. Comparado con las ITT-ER de 2015-2019, Durango, Tamaulipas y Nuevo León tuvieron un RR mayor de ITT-ER que el resto del país. Conclusiones: La epidemia de SARS-CoV-2 tuvo repercusiones importantes en los trabajadores afiliados al IMSS; se observó un exceso de ITT-ER de 4.6 veces respecto a la frecuencia esperada y cerca de un millón de casos de SARS-CoV-2. Los datos sugieren que el sistema de ITT-ER puede ser utilizado como elemento adicional para la vigilancia epidemiológica de enfermedades emergentes.

Resumen Los incendios forestales son una de las mayores causas de degradación de ecosistemas en Chile. La temporada de incendios forestales 2016-2017 destacó por la superficie afectada, incluyendo un bosque y matorral, del tipo forestal Roble-Hualo, de alto valor de conservación. Por lo que este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto del incendio en ambas formaciones, sobre la estructura del dosel mediante la utilización de fotografías hemisféricas. Además, se cuantificó el efecto del incendio en variables químicas del suelo, diversidad y abundancia de la vegetación. Los resultados indicaron una clara degradación de la estructura del dosel del bosque y matorral, aumento en la radiación potencial sobre el piso forestal, reducción del área foliar y cobertura de los doseles sobre el suelo. Asimismo, algunas variables químicas como el pH, materia orgánica (MO%), suma de bases (Sb) y potasio disponible (Kd) aumentaron en el suelo del matorral, no así en el suelo del bosque. La regeneración post-incendio fue escaza en ambas coberturas, además se apreció una considerable pérdida de diversidad arbórea y arbustiva, afectando así la composición de la vegetación, en el bosque y en el matorral.

Abstract Forest fires are one of the major causes of ecosystem degradation in Chile. The 2016-2017 forest fire season was notable for the affected area, including a forest and scrub, of the Roble-Hualo forest type, of high conservation value. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of the fire in both formations, on the structure of the canopy through the use of hemispheric photographs. In addition, the effect of the fire on chemical variables of soil, diversity and abundance of vegetation were quantified. The results indicated a clear degradation of the structure of the canopy of the forest and scrub, increase in the potential radiation on the forest floor, reduction of the foliar area and coverage of the canopies on the ground. Also, some chemical variables such as pH, organic matter (MO%), sum of bases (Sb) and available potassium (Kd) increased in the scrub soil, but not in the forest floor. Post-fire regeneration was scarce in both coverages, in addition there was a considerable loss of arboreal and shrubby diversity, thus affecting the composition of the vegetation, in the forest and in the scrub.

Specialized documentation envisioned from a pedagogical bases to train scientifically and technologically teachers and researchers, who initiate themselves in the analysis of high energy physics (HEP) experiments, is scarce. The lack of this material makes that young scientists' learning process be prolonged in time, raising costs in experimental research. In this paper we present the Monte Carlo technique applied to simulate the threshold energy for producing final-state particles of a specific two-body process (A + B → C + D), as pedagogical environment to face both computationally and conceptually an experimental analysis. The active/interactive learning-teaching formative process presented here is expected to be an educational resource for reducing young scientists' learning curve and saving time and costs in HEP scientific research.

La documentación especializada pensada desde bases pedagógicas para la formación científica y tecnológica de profesores e investigadores que comienzan con el análisis de datos experimentales de física de altas energías (HEP) es escasa. La falta de este material hace que el aprendizaje del joven científico se prolongue en el tiempo, aumentando los costos de la investigación experimental. En este artículo se presenta la técnica de Monte Carlo aplicada a simular la energía mínima para producir partículas en el estado final de un proceso dos a dos (A + B → C + D), como entorno pedagógico para afrontar computacionalmente y conceptualmente el análisis de datos de un experimento real. El proceso formativo de aprendizaje activo/interactivo presentado aquí, espera ser un recurso educativo que ayude a reducir la curva de aprendizaje de jovenes científicos y ahorrar tiempo y costos en la investigación científica de HEP.

Cowden’s disease, or multiple hamartoma syndrome, is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis, characterized by the presence of multiple cutaneous hamartomas, oral fibromas and benign acral keratosis. It affects multiple organs (breast, thyroids, stomach, colon), with the strong possibility of malignant neoplasia developing in these organs. We present a case of this rare syndrome, highlighting the presentation of some clinical characteristics that, in suspected cases, can help to establish an early diagnosis of this disease, this being of great importance given the high frequency of tumors in people with this clinical picture.

El Síndrome de Cowden o síndrome de hamartomas múltiples es una genodermatosis que se hereda de forma autosómica dominante, caracterizada por la presencia de múltiples hamartomas cutáneos, fibromas orales y queratosis acras benignas. Afecta a múltiples órganos (mama, tiroides, estómago o colon), pudiéndose presentar en estos órganos neoplasias malignas. Presentamos un caso de este síndrome, por su rareza y por presentar unas características clínicas que se deben conocer para que a partir de un diagnóstico de sospecha podamos llegar a un diagnóstico precoz de esta enfermedad, hecho este de gran importancia pues son frecuentes los tumores en las personas que padecen este cuadro clínico.
