Foram avaliadas as propriedades mecânicas, força, deformação e tensão ao limite elástico, tensão ao ponto de ruptura e índice de rigidez, de meniscos frescos e meniscos transplantados por 70 dias em joelhos de coelhos, após preservação em glicerina. O primeiro grupo (tratado) foi formado por seis meniscos mediais do joelho esquerdo, coletados de animais oriundos de criação comercial. Esses meniscos foram armazenados em glicerina 98% por um período de 45-60 dias; em seguida, foram reidratados em solução salina a 0,5% de enrofloxacina, por 12 horas, e implantados em joelhos de outros seis coelhos, submetidos à meniscectomia. Após 70 dias da cirurgia, foi realizada a eutanásia dos animais e retirada dos aloenxertos para avaliação mecânica. O segundo grupo (controle) foi composto por seis meniscos mediais, retirados dos joelhos contralaterais (direito) dos mesmos animais. Para a amostra estudada, não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos controle e tratado para nenhuma das variáveis analisadas, demonstrando que a reidratação de aloenxertos meniscais, após preservação em glicerina, mantém as características mecânicas desses, após 70 dias de implantação, semelhantes às de meniscos frescos.

We evaluated the mechanical properties, strength, strain and stress to the elastic limit, the rupture stress point and stiffness index of fresh menisci and menisci transplanted for 70 days in the knees of rabbits after preservation in glycerin. The first group (treated) was formed by six medial menisci of the left knee, collected from these animals for commercial breeding. These menisci were stored in 98% glycerin for a period of 30-60 days, and then rehydrated in a solution in 0.5% saline enrofloxacin for 12 hours, and implanted in the knees of another six rabbits underwent meniscectomy . After 70 days of surgery was performed the euthanasia of animals and removal of allografts for mechanical evaluation. The second group (control) consisted of six medial menisci, removed from the contralateral knees (right) of the same animals. For the sample studied, had no statistically significant difference between control and treated groups for any of the variables analyzed, showing that the rehydration of meniscal allografts after preservation in glycerin keeps the mechanical characteristics of these, after 70 days of implantation, similar to the meniscus fresh.

Introducción: el cáncer de mama (CM) constituye una enfermedad heterogénea reconociéndose subtipos con diferentes características mediante, entre otras técnicas, el estudio del nivel de expresión tumoral de los receptores hormonales (RRHH) y del HER2. Previamente reportamos la relación entre estos subtipos y características clínico-patológicas en pacientes uruguayas. Objetivo: analizar la sobrevida libre de enfermedad (SVLE) de pacientes uruguayas con cáncer de mama de acuerdo a su subtipo biológico, definido en base a la expresión tumoral de HER2 y RRHH evaluada mediante inmunohistoquímica. Material y método: se revisaron historias clínicas de pacientes intervenidas quirúrgicamente por CM estadios I-III en un período de dos años, realizándose el cálculo de SVLE para todas las pacientes y según subtipo biológico. Resultados: con seguimiento mediano de 40 meses, la SVLE a dos años para el total de las pacientes fue de 92,3%; 94% para las pacientes RRHH+/HER2-, 91% para las triple negativas (TN) y 71,4% para las HER2+. La comparación de las curvas de SVLE, según los diferentes subtipos, mostró menor SVLE para las pacientes HER2+ (p = 0,03) y similar SVLE de las pacientes RRHH+/HER2- y TN (p = 0,86). Conclusiones: las pacientes uruguayas con CM presentan una SVLE a dos años acorde a los reportes internacionales. Las pacientes HER2+ presentan una mayor tasa de recidivas, lo cual también es coincidente a lo reportado. La similar SVLE a dos años de las pacientes RRHH+/HER 2- y de las TN no se explicaría por diferencias en características clínico-patológicas, planteándose como hipótesis una mayor proporción de pacientes del subtipo luminal B entre las pacientes RRHH+/ HER 2-.

Resumo Introdução: o câncer de mama (CM) é uma patologia heterogênea, apresentando subtipos com diferentes características determinadas, entre outras técnicas, pelo estudo do nível de expressão tumoral dos receptores hormonais (RRHH) e do HER2. Em um artigo anterior descrevemos a relação entre esses subtipos e as características clínico-patológicas em pacientes uruguaias. Objetivo: analisar a sobrevida livre de enfermidade (SVLE) de pacientes uruguaias com CM de acordo a seu subtipo biológico, definido pela expressão tumoral de HER2 e RRHH avaliada por imunohistoquímica. Material e método: foram revisados os prontuários de pacientes operadas por cirurgia por CM estadios I-III em um período de dois anos; realizou-se o cálculo de SVLE de todas as pacientes e de acordo com o subtipo biológico. Resultados: o seguimento com uma mediana de 40 meses mostrou uma SVLE aos dois anos para todas as pacientes de 92,3%; 94% para as pacientes RRHH+/HER2-, 91% para a triple negativa (TN) e 71,4% para as HER2+. A comparação das curvas de SVLE, segundo os diferentes subtipos, mostrou uma menor SVLE para as pacientes HER2+ (p = 0,03) e similar SVLE para as pacientes RRHH+/HER2- y TN (p = 0,86). Conclusões: as pacientes uruguaias com CM apresentam uma SVLE a dois anos compatível com resultados internacionais. As pacientes HER2+ apresentaram uma taxa maior de recidivas, resultados que coincidem com resultados internacionais. A SVLE aos dois anos similar para pacientes RRHH+/HER2- e TN não pode ser explicada pelas diferenças nas características clínico-patológicas, considerando-se como hipótese uma proporção maior de pacientes do subtipo luminal B entre as pacientes RRHH+/HER2-.

Abstract Introduction: breast cancer constitutes an heterogeneous disease. Two sub-types have been distinguished through the study of the tumor expression level of hormone receptors tumors, and level of HER2 expression, among other techniques. We previously reported the relation between these sub-types and the clinical and pathological characteristics of Uruguayan women. Objective: to analyse the disease-free survival (DFS) of Uruguayan patients with breast cancer, according to their biological sub-type, defined based on the tumor expression of hormone receptors and HER2 expression which were assessed by immune-histological chemistry staining. Method: all clinical records of patients who had undergone breast cancer surgery (Stages I-III) during a two year period were reviewed. The disease-free survival rate was calculated for all patients and according to their biological profile. Results: forty months follow up revealed disease-free survival upon two years of 92.3% for all patients; 94% for hormone receptor positive /HER2 negative patients, 91% for triple negative patients, and 71.4% for hormone receptor positive patients. Comparing the DFS curves, for the different sub-types, evidenced a lower DFS for HER2+ patients (p = 0.03), and similar DFS for hormone receptor positive/HER2 negative and triple negative (p = 0.86). Conclusions: uruguayan patients with breast cancer show a two-year-DFS that matches international reports. HER2+ patients evidence a higher relapse rate, also consistent with international reports. Similar DFS upon two years, between hormone receptor positive/HER2 negative patients and triple negative patients cannot be due to differences in the clinical-pathological characteristics, thus a hypothesis is considered: there is a larger proportion of patients of the luminal B breast cancer sub-type among hormone receptor positive/HER2 negative patients.

OBJETIVO: Verificar as variações quanto a sexo, idade, número e tempo de internação em pacientes com esquizofrenia. MÉTODOS: O estudo foi realizado no Hospital Doutor João Machado, referência estadual psiquiátrica, situado em Natal/RN - Brasil, no período de 1999 a 2005. O número de casos, o tempo de internação, a idade e o sexo foram coletados. Esses dados foram analisados pela estatística descritiva e Teste de Mann-Whitney com nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: Durante esse tempo, 12.732 pessoas foram internadas. Os portadores de esquizofrenia corresponderam a 35,35% (4.501). A permanência no hospital foi de 44,33 ± 36,9 dias, diferente daquela observada nos não-portadores de esquizofrenia, 29,5 ± 61,6 dias (p < 0,0001). A idade média foi de 38,7 ± 13,5 anos, sendo a maioria dos pacientes do sexo masculino (65,78%). Em 1999, de cada 100 internados, 39,8 eram portadores de esquizofrênia; em 2005 essa proporção reduziu-se para 30,1. A esquizofrenia paranóide foi a mais freqüente, ocorrendo em 1.829 (40%) dos pacientes durante o período. CONCLUSÕES: O estudo aponta uma tendência à redução no número de doentes internados com esquizofrenia, bem como uma diminuição no tempo de internação.

OBJETIVE: To find out the variation range according to gender, age, number of admissions, and stay length in hospital for schizophrenic patients. METHODS: The study was performed in Doutor João Machado Hospital, Natal/RN - Brazil from 1999 through 2005. The number of cases, the stay length in hospital, the gender, and the age of the mentioned group were collected. This data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney Test with a 5% significance level. RESULTS: Over that time, 12,732 people were admitted. The schizophrenic patients corresponded to 35.35% (4,501). The stay length in the hospital was 44.33 ± 36,9 days, compared to 29.5 ± 61.6 days for non-schizophrenic patients (p < 0.0001). The average age was 38.7 ± 13.5 years and most patients (65.78%) were male. In 1999, 39.8 out of 100 admitted patients were schizophrenic; in 2005 this ratio was reduced to 30.1. Paranoid schizophrenia was the most prevalent type, reaching 1,829 (40%) patients during the study time. CONCLUSIONS: The study shows a trend to reduced number of patients admitted due to schizophrenia, as well as a reduced stay length in the hospital.
