Abstract: Leucaena esculenta and Leucaena leucocephala (Fabaceae) are species known in Mexico as "guajes", both are used as food and medicinal resources to alleviate different infectious diseases. The objective of this study was to determine the antimicrobial activity of the methanolic, acetonic and hexanic extracts of the seeds of L. esculenta and L. leucocephala collected in the community of Tlayacapan Morelos. The extracts were obtained by the maceration technique with hexane, acetone and methanol from the same plant material and reduced by vacuum distillation using a rotary evaporator. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was determined qualitatively and quantitatively in 20 bacterial strains, 3 yeast strains and 4 strains of filamentous fungi. In qualitative tests, antimicrobial activity was found in 6 bacterial strains (all of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli), 1 strain of yeast fungi and 4 of mycelial fungi. Using the broth microdilution technique, Escherichia coli CUSI showed MIC values of 2000 and 3000 μg / mL for L. leucocephala and L. esculenta respectively and for Staphylococcus aureus CUSI, MIC = 4000 and 2000 μg / mL for methanolic extracts of L. leucocephala and L. esculenta respectively. The MBC values for the kinetics of death (6000 μg / mL for L. leucocephala and 4000 μg / mL for L. esculenta) had a significant effect in the first 10 hours of treatment. Meanwhile, Candida glabrata was susceptible to methanolic extracts with MFC values of 4000 μg / mL (L. leucocephala) and 6000 μg / mL (L. esculenta). In radial growth inhibition technique, it was reported that the lowest values of CF50 correspond to the acetonic extracts of seeds (L. lecucocephala = 2.28 mg / mL and L. esculenta = 2.72 mg / mL) having a significant effect against strains Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Aspergillus niger, respectively. In qualitative tests for the determination of secondary metabolites, the presence of alkaloids, triterpenes, monoterpenes, steroids, saponins and phenolic compounds were found, which report antimicrobial potential. The methanolic and acetonic extracts from the seeds of both guajes showed significant biological activity on different strains of bacteria and fungi, thus validating the medicinal use of this resource by the Tlayacapan community.

Objective: to assess the effect of pentoxiphylline (a potent inhibitor of tumor necrosis factor alpha) on survival, on systemic and portal hemodynamics, and on cardiac function in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis. Design: a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. Setting: a single center using parallel groups of patients to compare pentoxiphylline with placebo. Patients: we recruited 24 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis (8 Child-Pugh B and 16 Child-Pugh C). Interventions: patients were randomly assigned to receive pentoxiphylline (400 mg tid; n = 12) or placebo (n = 12) over a 4-week period. Outcome measures: the primary outcome was to extend short-term and long-term survival. Secondary outcomes included hemodynamic benefits (improvement in cardiac function and/or systemic vascular resistance index, or decrease in portal pressure). Results: portal pressure and cardiac function remained unchanged and there were no significant differences in short-term or long-term survival between treatment and placebo groups. The group on pentoxiphylline increased systemic vascular resistance and decreased cardiac indices (from 1,721 ± 567 to 2,082 ± 622 dyn.sec-1 cm-5 m-2 and from 4.17 ± 1.4 to 3.4 ± 0.9 l.m-2, p = 0.05). Conclusions: although pentoxiphylline seems to provide some short-term aemodynamic benefits in patients with advanced alcoholic cirrhosis, this drug has no effect on survival or portal pressure in these patients.

In this work, a comparative study was performed with two austenitic stainless steels: one of the standard type AISI 304 (18% Cr / 8% Ni / 1,3% Mn / 0,07% Cu / 0,033% N, in weight) and other where nickel was partially replaced by manganese, nitrogen and copper (16,3% Cr / 1,5% Ni / 7,4% Mn / 2,9% Cu / 0,184% N, in weight). The aim was to reduce the cost of the final product preserving its good formability and corrosion resistance properties. In order to determine the degree of stability of the austenite, isothermal tensile tests were performed on samples of the two steels in the range of temperature from -25 to 70 ºC. The amount of a' martensite formed was measured with a ferrite detector. Microhardness tests showed that the hardness of both steels increase with the amount of induced martensite. Microstructural characterization of the deformed samples was performed by Optical Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. The mechanical properties were studied by tension and formability tests (Erichsen and Swift). It was verified that the AISI 304 steel presents better formability (stretch formability) than the steel with partial substitution of Ni by Mn, Cu and N.

Sunlight, a crucial ingredient for life, may prove harmful for the skin under some circumstances. Several related cutaneous disorders are sunburn, photodematosis, photoageing or inmunosuppression. Sunbathing with the only scope of getting a tan is not advisable. Ultraviolet rays may origin serious skin diseases. Learning to enjoy safely sunbathing requires basic photoprotection concepts.

The scabies is a ectoparasitosic produced by Sarcoptes scabiei. Two clinical forms exist, typical and the scabies Norwegian, with hyperkeratosical injuries generalized and great potential to cause buds in overcrowding situations. The infestation is more frequent in those circumstances in that a contact prolonged with the affected ones exists. Sometimes it creates problems diagnoses and therapeutics depending on the age and situation of the subject. The processing will be based on the correct use of escabicides, hygienic measures and the accomplishment of a suitable prophylaxis in all the contacts.
