Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a preservative treatment with Chromated Copper Borate (CCB) in different concentrations and autoclave pressure time on the biological resistance of Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis (called urograndis). Urograndis fence posts were submitted to industrial autoclaving in nine treatments as a function of CCB concentration and pressure time: 1.5% (30, 60 and 90 minutes); 2.0% (30, 60 and 90 minutes); and 2.5% (30, 60 and 90 minutes). Then the obtained specimens were submitted to an accelerated laboratory decay test. The industrial preservative treatment increased the resistance of the wood to decay and the concentration of 1.5% CCB and 30 minutes of autoclave pressure can be applied to treat urograndis wood without compromising its resistance to the attack of white-rot and brown-rot fungi.

OBJETIVOS: estipular o custo do procedimento cirúrgico do transplante de fígado realizado no Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (HC/UFPE). MÉTODOS: foram analisados os primeiros quatro transplantes de fígado realizados no HC/UFPE. Os pacientes foram classificados conforme o índice de gravidade da United Network for Organ Sharing em classe um - dois pacientes; classe dois - um paciente; classe quatro - um paciente. Os custos foram determinados da seguinte maneira: diárias, taxas de sala e aparelhagem - estimativa realizada pelo setor de faturamento do HC/UFPE em julho de 2001; taxa de oxigênio, materiais descartáveis, medicamentos; exames e hemoterapia. Não foram levantados os custos da retirada do fígado, assim como não foram considerados os custos de equipe médica, de enfermagem, técnicos e paramédicos envolvidos no procedimento. RESULTADOS: o item de materiais descartáveis foi o que mais onerou o transplante, correspondendo a cerca de 48,5% do custo total, seguido pelas diárias e medicamentos com 17,9% e 16,1% respectivamente. CONCLUSÕES: os autores concluíram que o custo médio do procedimento cirúrgico do transplante hepático no HC/UFPE foi no período de 1998 a 2001 de R$22.184,40 (US$8.873,76; U$1,00 = R$2,50).

OBJECTIVES: the aim of this study was to determine the overall cost involving the surgical procedure for liver transplantation performed at the Hospital das Clínicas, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (HC/UFPE). METHODS: the authors analyzed the last four liver transplantation procedures performed at the mentioned hospital. Patients were classified according to the United Network for Organ Sharing Health Severity Index into class one, (two patients), class two (one patient); and class four (one patient). The parameters evaluated to determine the procedure costs were: hospitalization, operating room and monitoring equipment fees. Cost estimate was provided by the financial department of the hospital in July 2001; and comprised of oxygen fees, disposable material and medications, diagnostic tests and hemotherapy costs. The authors did not include cost analysis for procedure on donors, nor the cost of the medical, nursing and paramedics involved. RESULTS: the disposable materials items accounted for the leading cost parameters, reaching 48,5% of the overall cost, followed by hospitalization and medication fees with 17,9 % and 16,1%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: the authors concluded that the average cost of a liver transplantation at the HC/UFPE in the period 1998-2001, was of R$22.184,00 reais (US$8.873,76; U$1,00 = R$2,50).

Objetivo — Com o intuito de avaliar a eficácia e a manutenção da esclerose endoscópica pós-operatória como rotina, em associação à esplenectomia com ligadura da veia gástrica esquerda e desvascularização da grande curvatura do estômago, foi realizado o presente estudo. Método - Entre 1992 e 1998 foram operados 131 pacientes no Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Recife, PE. O seguimento médio foi de 30 meses. Os pacientes foram solicitados a retornar ao ambulatório daquele hospital para realização de controle clínico e laboratorial. Dos 111 pacientes que retornaram ao ambulatório, apenas 80 realizaram endoscopia digestiva alta de controle. Destes 80, 36 seguiram a recomendação e realizaram esclerose endoscópica pós-operatória (grupo 1), enquanto 44 não a realizaram (grupo 2). Resultados - Observou-se de forma relevante e estatisticamente significativa, a diferença entre os dois grupos quando se analisou a erradicação das varizes de esôfago, com melhor resultado para o grupo 1 (52,7% do grupo 1 versus 18,2% do Grupo 2). Nos demais itens analisados (mortalidade, recidiva hemorrágica, trombose da veia porta, varizes de fundo gástrico e grau de fibrose periportal) não se observou relevância estatística. Conclusão - Conclui-se que a associação da escleroterapia endoscópica pós-operatória à esplenectomia com ligadura de veia gástrica esquerda e desvascularização da grande curvatura do estômago, no tratamento da hipertensão portal esquistossomótica com antecedentes de hemorragia digestiva, deve ser mantida.

Objective — With the intention of evaluating the effectiveness and the maintenance of the postoperative endoscopic sclerosis as routine, in association to splenectomy with left gastric vein ligature and devascularization of the great curvature of the stomach, the present study was accomplished. Method - Between 1992 and 1998, 131 patient were operated in the General Division of the "Hospital das Clínicas" (Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife, PE, Brazil). The medium follow-up was 30 months. All patients were requested to come back to the clinic for accomplishment of clinical and laboratory control. Of the 111 patients that came back to the clinic, 80 patients had a digestive endoscopy done. Of these 80 patients, 36 followed the recommendation and underwent to a postoperative endoscopic sclerosis program (group 1), while 44 did not accomplish postoperative endoscopic sclerosis (group 2). Results - Regarding the eradication of the esophagus varices, the authors found a statistical difference between the groups (52,7% of the group 1 vs. 18,2% of the group 2). Other analyzed items (mortality, rebleeding rate, thrombosis of the portal vein, gastric varices and degree of periportal fibrosis) statistical relevance was not observed. Conclusion - The association of the postoperative endoscopic sclerosis to the splenectomy with left gastric vein ligature and devascularization of the great curvature of the stomach, in the treatment of schistosomotic portal hypertension with digestive hemorrhage antecedent, should be maintained.
