Abstract The iAtlantic Project has established an international collaborative strategy to improve mapping and characterization of deep and open ocean ecosystems in understudied regions of the Atlantic and evaluate their health. In December 2022, the first iAtlantic expedition in the South Atlantic set off to map and explore seafloor ecosystems in the Santos Basin slope (200-1,000 m depths) in collaboration with the Petrobras ‘Santos Basin - Regional Characterization Project.’ The 17-day ‘iAtlantic_BR10-Petrobras’ cruise was conducted on board the research vessel NPqHOc Vital de Oliveira (Brazilian Navy) and performed (a) water column structure characterization, (b) seafloor morphology mapping, (c) description of benthic habitats and communities by seafloor imagery and biological/ geological sampling, and (d) ex-situ experiments to assess the functioning of sedimentary ecosystems and their responses to climate-related environmental changes. This study describes the rationale behind the iAtlantic_BR10-Petrobras cruise science plan, reports its sampling strategy and methods, and summarizes its collected data and preliminary results.

ABSTRACT The use of salt stress attenuators is considered an important tool to minimize the deleterious effects of salts. However, its application to chives (Allium schoenoprasum L.) has not been studied. This study aimed to evaluate the induction of salt stress tolerance in chives plants in relation to growth and enzymatic reactions, when subjected to different salinity levels of the nutrient solution, after acclimation of seeds with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 24 h. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, where chives seeds were acclimated by H2O2 at concentrations of 0.0, 0.15, 0.30, 0.45 and 0.60 mmol. After germination, the plants were cultivated in hydroponic system with electrical conductivities of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 dS m-1. Plant height, length and number of leaves, H2O2 content, malondialdehyde and catalase (CAT) activity were evaluated in chives plants. The increase in the salinity of the nutrient solution up to 5 dS m-1 reduced by 5.88%, 17% and 9.63% plant height, leaf length and number of leaves, respectively. It was observed that the acclimation of chives seeds with H2O2 at 0.45 mmol g-1 fresh mass in plants that were cultivated in nutrient solution of 3.73 dS m-1 led to maximum CAT activity, minimizing the deleterious effects of nutrient solution salinity on plant growth.

OBJECTIVES: To prospectively evaluate demographic, anthropometric and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in pediatric patients with laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) METHODS: This was a longitudinal observational study of surviving pediatric post-COVID-19 patients (n=53) and pediatric subjects without laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 included as controls (n=52) was performed. RESULTS: The median duration between COVID-19 diagnosis (n=53) and follow-up was 4.4 months (0.8-10.7). Twenty-three of 53 (43%) patients reported at least one persistent symptom at the longitudinal follow-up visit and 12/53 (23%) had long COVID-19, with at least one symptom lasting for >12 weeks. The most frequently reported symptoms at the longitudinal follow-up visit were headache (19%), severe recurrent headache (9%), tiredness (9%), dyspnea (8%), and concentration difficulty (4%). At the longitudinal follow-up visit, the frequencies of anemia (11% versus 0%, p=0.030), lymphopenia (42% versus 18%, p=0.020), C-reactive protein level of >30 mg/L (35% versus 0%, p=0.0001), and D-dimer level of >1000 ng/mL (43% versus 6%, p=0.0004) significantly reduced compared with baseline values. Chest X-ray abnormalities (11% versus 2%, p=0.178) and cardiac alterations on echocardiogram (33% versus 22%, p=0.462) were similar at both visits. Comparison of characteristic data between patients with COVID-19 at the longitudinal follow-up visit and controls showed similar age (p=0.962), proportion of male sex (p=0.907), ethnicity (p=0.566), family minimum monthly wage (p=0.664), body mass index (p=0.601), and pediatric pre-existing chronic conditions (p=1.000). The Pediatric Quality of Live Inventory 4.0 scores, median physical score (69 [0-100] versus 81 [34-100], p=0.012), and school score (60 [15-100] versus 70 [15-95], p=0.028) were significantly lower in pediatric patients with COVID-19 at the longitudinal follow-up visit than in controls. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients with COVID-19 showed a longitudinal impact on HRQoL parameters, particularly in physical/school domains, reinforcing the need for a prospective multidisciplinary approach for these patients. These data highlight the importance of closer monitoring of children and adolescents by the clinical team after COVID-19.

Abstract The mating behavior of M. angulata (Fabricius, 1775) is described, illustrated and discussed. Additionally, we also comment on the possible new host plant of this species based on two plants (Luehea cymulosa Spruce ex Benth. (Malvaceae) and Doliocarpus dentatus (Aubl.) Standl (Dilleniaceae) on which copulation occurs.

RESUMO A Moringa oleifera é uma espécie de grande importância econômica, social e ambiental, sendo empregada para múltiplos usos. Assim, objetivou-se ajustar modelos de regressão para estimativa de área de folíolos por método não-destrutivo a partir de medidas lineares de folíolos de mudas de M. oleifera. A pesquisa foi realizada no Centro de Ciências Agrárias e Ambientais da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba. Foram coletados 300 folíolos de M. oleifera, nos quais foram realizadas medidas para determinação do comprimento “L” e da largura “W” e, posteriormente, a área de folíolos foi quantificada por meio do software ImageJ®. Utilizando-se de 200 folíolos, os modelos de regressão univariados foram ajustados adotando-se comprimento, largura ou o produto destas dimensões “LW” e um modelo bivariado por meio do comprimento e largura como variáveis preditoras da área de folíolos observada como variável dependente. Com os 100 folíolos remanescentes, foi realizada a avaliação da relação entre a área de folíolos observada “OLA” e a estimada “ELA”, correlação de Pearson “r”; índice de concordância de Willmott “d” e de confiança “c”; e erro médio quadrático “RMSE”. Verificou-se que modelos alométricos podem ser usados com elevada precisão e performance para estimativa de área de folíolos de M. oleifera por método não-destrutivo, sendo recomendado o modelo ELA = 0,035 + 0,720*LW. Pesquisas futuras são sugeridas para ajustes de modelos multivariados para estimativa de área foliar de M. oleifera a partir de tamanhos de folíolos variados, folhas completas, massa fresca e seca das folhas, histórico de vida e idade das plantas.

ABSTRACT Moringa oleifera is a species of great economic, social and environmental importance, being employed for multiple purposes. Thus, the objective of this study was to fit regression models for estimating leaflets area as non-destructive method from linear measurements of leaflets of M. oleifera seedlings. The study was carried out at the Center for Agrarian and Environmental Sciences of the Paraíba State University. Three hundred leaflets of M. oleifera were collected and measured to determine length “L” and width “W” and, subsequently, leaflets area was quantified through ImageJ® software. Using 200 leaflets, the univariate regression models were fitted, adopting length, width or the product of these dimensions “LW” and a bivariate model based on length and width as predictor variables of the observed leaflets area as dependent variable. The remaining 100 leaflets were used to evaluate the relationship between the observed leaflet area “OLA” and the estimated leaflets area “ELA”, based on Pearson’s correlation “r”; Willmott’s index of agreement “d” and index of confidence “c”; and root mean square error “RMSE”. It was found that allometric models can be used with high accuracy and performance to estimate the leaflets area of M. oleifera as non-destructive method, and recommended model is ELA = 0.035 + 0.720*LW. Future research is suggested for fittings of multivariate models to estimate the leaf area of M. oleifera from varying leaflet sizes, complete leaves, leaf fresh and dry weights, history of life and age of plants.

The current industry requires of the fault diagnostic systems with a detection stage that can ensure a small number of false alarms and a quick detection of faults, regardless of their nature and magnitude. However, a common problem of the approaches based on the Multivariate Statistical Process Monitoring (MSPM) which are currently used for this purpose is the difficulty of them to detect small magnitude faults without incurring a high number of false alarms, and faults not detected. To overcome this drawback, in this paper is proposed a novel approach that combines the advantages of kernel methods, and a novel EWMA with enhanced dynamic to filter the T² Hotelling statistic used as the fault detection mechanism in a complex chemical process.

La industria actual requiere de sistemas de diagnóstico de fallos, que en su etapa de detección garanticen pocas falsas alarmas y logren detectar por demás, los fallos con la mayor rapidez posible independientemente de su naturaleza y magnitud. Sin embargo, un problema de los enfoques de monitoreo de procesos mediante estadística multivariada (MSPM) que son utilizados con este propósito es la incapacidad de detectar fallos de pequeña magnitud sin incurrir en un elevado número de falsas alarmas, u omitir gran cantidad de fallos que deben ser detectados. Como solución a este problema, en el presente trabajo se propone un esquema de trabajo que combina las ventajas de los métodos kernel y un novedoso enfoque EWMA con dinámica reforzada para filtrar el estadístico T² de Hotelling utilizado como mecanismo de detección en un proceso químico de gran escala.

Neste estudo avaliou-se a influência da ingestão de proteína durante a fase adulta em machos e fêmeas de duas populações de Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann, uma composta por moscas criadas há vinte anos em laboratório sem a introdução de moscas selvagens (Lab-pop) e outra mantida há aproximadamente quinze anos com a introdução periódica destas (Hybrid-pop). Foram testadas três dietas: duas contendo levedura de cerveja (fonte protéica), respectivamente, nas concentrações de 6,5 g e 1,5 g por 100 ml de dieta e uma dieta sem levedura. Foram avaliados os parâmetros: longevidade dos adultos, ingestão de dietas com e sem levedura e limiar de discriminação para a levedura. A ingestão de proteína aumentou a longevidade dos adultos da Lab-pop, porém não influenciou a longevidade dos da Hybrid-pop. Dentro de cada população, ambos os sexos apresentaram longevidade similar, quando alimentados com o mesmo tipo de dieta. Adultos de ambas as populações apresentaram comportamento alimentar similar e preferiram se alimentar de dietas contendo fonte protéica (levedura) em relação a dietas sem essa fonte. Machos e fêmeas, em ambas as populações, ingeriram quantidades similares de uma mesma dieta. O limiar de discriminação para a levedura foi semelhante para os machos das duas populações (0,5 g/100 ml de dieta); as fêmeas da Lab-pop foram capazes de perceber uma quantidade menor de levedura na dieta, ou seja tiveram maior capacidade de discriminação (0,4 g/100 ml de dieta) em relação as fêmeas oriundas da Hybrid-pop (0,6 g/100 ml de dieta).

The effects of protein intake on two adult male and female populations of Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann were assessed. One population consisted of flies reared for twenty years in the laboratory (Lab-pop); the other population consisted both of flies reared in the laboratory for approximately fifteen years and of the periodically introduced wild flies (Hybrid-pop). Three diets were tested: a no-yeast diet and two diets containing yeast (protein source) at the concentrations 6.5 g or 1.5 g per 100 ml diet. The parameters analyzed were: adult longevity, diet intake with and without yeast, and discrimination threshold for yeast. Protein intake increased Lab-pop adult longevity and did not affect longevity of the Hybrid-pop. Longevity in each population was similar for males and females fed on the same diet. Food behavior were similar for male and female adults of both populations; all preferred diets containing protein (yeast). Males and females in both populations ingested similar amounts of each diet. The discrimination threshold for yeast was similar for all males (0.5 g yeast/100 ml diet); Lab-pop females were able to detect the presence of smaller quantities of yeast in their diet, thus having a higher discrimination capacity (0.4 g/100 ml diet) as compared to the Hybrid-pop females (0.6 g/ 100 ml diet).

Estudos sobre longevidade e fecundidade de moscas-das-frutas são importantes para o entendimento de seus aspectos demográficos e para orientar a implantação de estratégias de manejo integrado. Neste trabalho estudou-se a longevidade de adultos de Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann), A. sororcula (Zucchi), A. zenildae (Zucchi) e A. obliqua (Macquart). Avaliou-se, também, o padrão reprodutivo ao longo da vida das espécies A. sororcula e A. obliqua e a fecundidade, aos dezoito dias de vida, das quatro espécies. A longevidade de A. zenildae foi semelhante à de A. sororcula e maior que de A. fraterculus, seguida de A. obliqua. Não diferiu estatisticamente entre os sexos, exceto para A. obliqua. O decréscimo da sobrevivência ocorreu mais rapidamente em A. obliqua, seguida de A. fraterculus e de A. sororcula, que foi semelhante a A. zenildae. A maior média de óvulos aos 18 dias de vida foi de A. obliqua, seguida por A. fraterculus, A. zenildae e A. sororcula. O padrão reprodutivo ao longo da vida diferiu entre as espécies avaliadas. A. obliqua apresentou período reprodutivo mais longo, teve mais de um pico de oviposição e maior produção diária e total de ovos. As diferenças observadas nos padrões de sobrevivência e de produção e postura de ovos das espécies de Anastrepha refletem estratégias que podem estar associadas à estabilidade do ambiente e/ou à capacidade diferencial de resposta a ambientes instáveis. Assim, pode-se sugerir a existência de estratégias de sobrevivência semelhantes entre A. obliqua e A. fraterculus e entre A. sororcula e A. zenildae.

Studies on fruit fly longevity and fertility are important to understand their demographic aspects and to orient implantation of integrated management strategies. This study investigated the longevity of adult Anastrepha species A. fraterculus (Wiedemann), A. sororcula (Zucchi), A. zenildae (Zucchi) and A. obliqua (Macquart). The reproductive pattern was also assessed throughout the life of the species A. sororcula and A. obliqua and fertility at eighteen days of life of the four species. A. zenildae longevity was similar to A. sororcula, longer than A. fraterculus and followed by A. obliqua. No statistical difference between the sexes was observed, except for A. obliqua. The decrease in survival occurred fastest in A. obliqua followed by A. fraterculus and A. sororcula, which was similar to A. zenildae. The highest mean of eggs at 18 days of life was for A. obliqua, followed by A. fraterculus, A. zenildae and A. sororcula. The reproductive pattern over the lifespan differed among the species assessed. A. obliqua presented a longer reproductive period, with more than one oviposition peak and greater daily and total egg production. The differences observed in the survival patterns and egg production and oviposition in the Anastrepha species reflect strategies that may be associated with environmental stability and/or differential response capacity to unstable environments. Thus the existence of similar survival strategies can be suggested between A. obliqua and A. fraterculus and between A. sororcula and A. zenildae.
