Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a form of genetically caused heart muscle disease, characterized by the thickening of the ventricular walls. Diagnosis requires detection through imaging methods (Echocardiogram or Cardiac Magnetic Resonance) showing any segment of the left ventricular wall with a thickness > 15 mm, without any other probable cause. Genetic analysis allows the identification of mutations in genes encoding different structures of the sarcomere responsible for the development of HCM in about 60% of cases, enabling screening of family members and genetic counseling, as an important part of patient and family management. Several concepts about HCM have recently been reviewed, including its prevalence of 1 in 250 individuals, hence not a rare but rather underdiagnosed disease. The vast majority of patients are asymptomatic. In symptomatic cases, obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) is the primary disorder responsible for symptoms, and its presence should be investigated in all cases. In those where resting echocardiogram or Valsalva maneuver does not detect significant intraventricular gradient (> 30 mmHg), they should undergo stress echocardiography to detect LVOT obstruction. Patients with limiting symptoms and severe LVOT obstruction, refractory to beta-blockers and verapamil, should receive septal reduction therapies or use new drugs inhibiting cardiac myosin. Finally, appropriately identified patients at increased risk of sudden death may receive prophylactic measure with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation.

Abstract: Serra do Japi, located in the southeast of São Paulo State, is considered a priority area for conservation, as it houses original Atlantic Forest cover remains. Despite the significant number of studies about vertebrates and invertebrates that were carried out in this region, the meiofauna biodiversity is completely unknown. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate for the first time freshwater Gastrotricha and limnoterrestrial Tardigrada in Serra do Japi Biological Reserve. Samples of sediments, periphyton and floating vegetation in reservoirs and natural lagoons, and mosses growing on native and non-native tree trunks were collected in May 2019. At least five gastrotrichs morphotypes were identified and three of them were formally described: Chaetonotus acanthocephalus, C. dadayi (first record in Brazil), and Heterolepidoderma mariae (first record outside the type locality). In regards to tardigrades, twelve morphotypes were identified and four of them were formally described: Pseudechiniscus juanitae, Minibiotus cf. acontistus, Echiniscus dreyfusi and Itaquascon umbellinae (last two species reported for the first time outside the type locality). This study reinforces that meiofaunal diversity and distribution have been underestimated, even in one of the five largest hotspots in the world.

Abstract Leigh syndrome is an early onset progressive disorder caused by defects in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Pathogenic variants in nuclear and mitochondrial genes are associated with the syndrome. Homozygous pathogenic variants in the C12orf65 gene impair the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation system. We describe a new case of Leigh syndrome caused by a novel pathogenic variant of the C12orf65 gene resulting in the lack of the Gly-Gly-Gln (GGQ) domain in the predicted protein, and review clinical and molecular data from previously reported patients. Our study supports that the phenotype caused by C12orf65 gene variants is heterogeneous and varies from spastic paraparesis to Leigh syndrome. Loss-of-function variants are more likely to cause the disease, and variants affecting the GGQ domain tend to be associated with more severe phenotypes, reinforcing a possible genotype-phenotype correlation.

This study aimed to determine cadmium in low-cost jewelry from China. In the qualitative test the sulfide was used as precipitating agent. Due to the strong interference of copper in qualitative analysis, this element was removed by chemical reaction or electrolysis. This removal was of paramount importance for the qualitative analysis of Cd2+. Quantification of Cd2+ was performed by means of atomic absorption spectrometry. The concentration of Cd was ~ 30% (w/w) in one of the pieces. It is noteworthy that in a small universe of low-cost jewelry analyzed (four samples), such a high cadmium content found in one of them leads us to think that jewelry containing Cd are widespread among citizens. This work can be useful to approach the case study method for teaching Analytical Chemistry at the undergraduate level.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess different combinations of coverage materials in reduced models of animal husbandry facilities based on thermal comfort indices. It was conducted in an experimental area of the Research Center in Ambience located in São Paulo State, Brazil (22°42′30″ S and 47°38′00″ W). The performance of ceramic and fiber-cement (white painted) tiles was assessed associated with two types of polypropylene commercial linings (lining A and B) installed below the roof, and a thermo-reflective screen (lining C) installed above the fiber-cement roof. Microclimatic assessment of distorted reduced-scale models was performed at 15-minute intervals by registering the air temperature, black globe temperature, relative humidity and air velocity. Subsequently, black globe humidity index, specific enthalpy, and radiant heat load were calculated. The experimental design was randomized block design with 5 treatments and 15 blocks (replications), totaling 75 experimental units. The reduced-scale models with lining B presented a reduction for all thermal comfort indices. Lining C, installed on the coverage, showed no upgrading of environmental thermal conditions. Thus, lining B presented a better thermal performance regardless the tile type.

ABSTRACTIt is proposed to evaluate the influence of microclimatic conditions of the lairage time in the hatchery chicks room on the final quality of one day-old chicks, that came from different ages of breeders. The mass of 1440 fertile eggs was divided into three batches of 480 eggs each, according to the age of breeders (46, 54 and 64 weeks). After birth, the chicks were selected, sexed and divided into the three ages of breeders and three lairage times (0, 14 and 28 h). Dataloggers were also installed in the lairage room and in the chick’s boxes to monitor the air temperature, relative humidity, specific enthalpy. A completely randomized design was used in factorial scheme of 2 x 3 x 3 with 50 repetitions. The analysed response variables were: body mass of chicks, cloacal temperature, average surface temperature and respiratory rate. The lairage time and the microclimatic conditions of the hatchery chick’s room influenced the thermal comfort of the chicks. The best lairage time was 0 h. The highest percentage of weight loss due to the lairage time was observed in chicks from breeders with 54 weeks of age.

The vibration and mechanical shocks that occur during the transport of chicks may act as a stressor, affecting bird’s life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the transport of one day-old chicks on different roads, through the vibration and shock occurring in trucks. The research was conducted in the poultry integrator company in the state of São Paulo, through the monitoring of 11 shipments of chicks. An air-conditioned truck (container type) was used, with a capacity of 630 boxes of chicks, totaling an average of 63,000 chicks. The vibration levels (m s-2) and shocks on the dirt and asphalt roads were recorded using three triaxial accelerometers. For the vibration level and the number of shocks, the experimental design was completely randomized in an 11 x 2 factorial. With the results it can be concluded that the worst vibration levels (vertical, horizontal and general acceleration) occurred on the dirt road, with mean values of 2.2, 3.3 and 25.8 m s-2, respectively. The largest amounts of shocks occurred for all shifts loads (vertical, horizontal left and right side) were observed on the asphalt road with average values of 453, 52 and 554 shocks, respectively.

This work aimed to adapt the analysis of methemoglobin recommended by Evelyn - Malloy (visible spectrophotometry), in order to facilitate its application in the field, or to analysis in clinical laboratory, of existing sites of diflubenzuron application. The parameters changed included: centrifuge rotation speed; time between the collection of biological sample and analysis, and storage temperature of the samples; and the volume of reagents. The comparison of the rotation speed (rpm) of the reference methodology with the rpm of a "clinical centrifuge" did not reveal a statistically significant difference in the levels of methemoglobin. The time between the collection of biological sample and analysis was extended for a period of up to 48 hours for both conservation by refrigeration and ambient temperature, producing no statistically significant difference when compared to the standard duration of 2 hours. Regarding the reagents, the reference methodology already uses the volume necessary to ensure complete reaction, whereas a wider range from the recommended volume to a 5-fold reduction in comparison to the reference methodology could be used. It was concluded that the proposed changes to the methodology for adapting the analysis are applicable to studies of field / workplace exposure and ensure the reliability of results. The adapted methodology was inter-laboratory validated and the parameters changed can be selected according to the requirements of the laboratory at which the methemoglobin is to be measured.

Direct solid sampling is proposed for Pb determination in eye shadow and blush samples by high-resolution continuum source graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (HR-CS GF AAS). A mixture of Pd(NO3)2 + Mg(NO3)2 was employed as chemical modifier, and aqueous calibration (0.25-2.5 ng Pb, r = 0.998) was obtained. Accuracy of the determination of Pb in eye shadow and blush samples by the proposed method was verified by line source graphite furnace AAS as a comparative technique employing digested samples. The results obtained by the two methods were in agreement at a 95% confidence level (paired t-test). The limit of quantification (dry mass) was 0.020 ng mg–1. The Pb content in the eye shadow and blush samples varied between 1.222 and 9.632 ng mg–1 and 0.362 and 28.091 ng mg–1, respectively.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

In extensive animal husbandry, natural or artificial ponds allow direct access of cattle to water but result in degradation of water quality and in increased health risks. Under such circumstances eutrophication occurs and consequently algal bloom, among them toxigenic cyanobacteria. The present study aimed to report the occurrence of cyanobacteria in the drinking water of cattle and to describe their physical and chemical parameters, as pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen. Nineteen samples of natural ponds or water troughs formed predominantly as result of rainfall from six farms located in the Southeast and Midwest regions of Brazil were analyzed for the presence of cyanobacteria, and pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen was measured. Microcystis and/or Merismopedia were detected in two ponds; one of them was covered with intense flowering. The values of pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen in 19 collections were pH 7.2-9.7, 31-34ºC and 7.8-30mg/l respectively. Also non-pathogenic algae of several genera were detected besides the occurrence or not of cianogenics. Under these conditions, the common practices of drinking water supply for extensively raised cattle and the possibilities of eutrophication and cyanobacterial growth bring potential risks for animal health.

The objective of this study was to characterize the diet and digestive tract morphology of flounder, catathyridium jenynsii (günther, 1862) (achiridae), in its early stages of life. for analysis of the digestive tract, we used a specimen of each larval stage, pre-flexion to post-flexion, and juvenile. a total of 256 larvae and 16 juveniles, belonging to five classes of standard length was analyzed for diet. data were collected in the itaipu reservoir, paraná river, brazil, from september, 2001 to march, 2002, and from september, 2002 to february, 2003. the occurrence and numerical methods were applied for determining the occurrence frequency and numerical frequency of each food item in different standard length (sl) classes. the anterior digestive tract of c. jenynsii began to differentiate into the stomach at 4.70 mm sl (not presented pyloric caeca). since the stage of pre-flexion, there are three intestinal folds and a lot of grooves in the digestive tract. the dietary analysis showed that the smaller larvae (class 1) had a distinct diet, with dominance of cladocerans (mainly bosmina hagmanni and bosminopsis deitersi). for class 2, the copepod notodiaptomus sp. was important both in number and occurrence, however b. hagmanni also had significant importance in the diet. already the largest larvae (classes 3 and 4) and juveniles (class 5) showed a similar diet, consuming mainly copepods (notodiaptomus sp.). therefore, in this study, larvae of c. jenynsii can be considered zooplanktivore, since in all stages of development, copedods and cladocerans dominated the diet. changes in diet followed the morphological changes of the early stages of c. jenynsii.

As variáveis fisiológicas e meteorológicas apresentaram valores superiores no confinamento.
Pregnant sows confinement systems were created in order to maximize the productivity, however there are problems concerning the animal welfare. The aim of this research was to evaluate pregnant sows in outdoors and in confinement systems in relation to the thermal environment and physiological animal responses. The experiment was conducted in a commercial farm in Monte Mor city, São Paulo, Brazil. The physiological evaluation was performed by recording physiological variables, such as respiratory frequency and skin temperature. Furthermore, variables like dry bulb temperature, wet bulb temperature, and black globe temperature were also evaluated to characterize the ambient by means of enthalpy and black globe humidity index. In each treatment six animals were evaluated. The experimental design was completely randomized in a split-plot version whose averages were compared by the Tukey test. The findings of the experiment revealed higher values for all the bioclimatic variables in the confined treatment. Hence, the outdoor system provided better thermal conditioning for pigs, resulting in a lower heat stress.
