Abstract Objective: To evaluate inactivated CoronaVac prime vaccination, antibody decay, booster dose, and safety in ANCA-Associated Vasculitis (AAV) patients. Methods: Fifty-three AAV patients and 106 Controls (CG) received CoronaVac on days: D0 (first dose), D28(second dose), and D210 (booster dose, 32 AAV: 32 CG). The primary outcome was immunogenicity after the second vaccine dose (day 69) assessed by Seroconversion Rates (SC) of anti-SARS-CoV-2 S1/S2 IgG and Neutralizing Antibodies (NAb). Secondary outcomes were safety, immunogenicity (D28/D240), 6-months antibody decay (D210) and the booster dose response (D240). Results: At D69 SC (65.1% vs. 96.8%, p = 0.0001), GMT (21.3 UA/mL vs. 67.7 UA/mL, p < 0.001) and NAb- positivity (53.7% vs. 80.6%, p = 0.001) were moderate but lower in naïve-AAV patients than CG. Patients without SC used more often IS (93.3% vs. 53.3%, p = 0.015), mycophenolate mofetil (20% vs. 0%, p = 0.037) and prednisone (60.0% vs. 28.6%, p = 0.057) than seroconverted. NAb negativity in AAV patients was associated with prednisone treatment (57.9% vs. 18.2%, p = 0.015) and IS (84.2% vs. 55.0%, p = 0.046). Logistic regression analysis models showed that only prednisone was associated with lower seroconversion (OR = 0.2, 0,95% CI 0.05–0.86, p = 0.030) and with lower NAb positivity (OR = 0.2, 0,95% CI 0.05–0.88, p = 0.034). After six months (D69–D210) a decrease in IgG positivity occurred in 32 AAV patients (15.7%, p = 0.074) and 32 CG (18.7%, p = 0.041). For the NAb positivity, the 6-month decrease was not significant (p = 0.114) whereas a major reduction occurred for CG (p < 0.001). A booster dose (D240) resulted in an increment in IgG-positivity (21.9%, p = 0.023) and NAb-positivity (34.4%, p = 0.006) in AAV patients. No moderate/severe adverse events attributable to the vaccine were observed. Conclusion: This study provides novel data on the excellent safety and moderate immunogenicity of CoronaVac in AAV patients. A six-month mild antibody waning was observed with a good response to the booster dose, although levels remained lower than CG (CoronavRheum-NCT04754698).

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a inclusão de Moringa oleifera na dieta de codornas japonesas sobre o desempenho, a qualidade de ovos, os parâmetros sanguíneos, o perfil bioquímico e o comportamento. Foram utilizadas 144 codornas japonesas, com aproximadamente 35 dias de idade, as quais foram distribuídas em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro tratamentos e seis repetições cada. Foram fornecidas dietas com 0, 2, 4 e 6% de folhas desidratadas e moídas de moringa. A inclusão de moringa nas dietas reduziu quadraticamente o consumo até o nível de 1,2%, aumentou o peso dos ovos com comportamento quadrático até o nível de 3,8% e aumentou linearmente o peso da gema. A coloração da gema se intensificou com maiores inclusões de moringa. O perfil bioquímico sofreu alterações leves, mas não saiu dos padrões normais para codornas. A inclusão de 4% de moringa nas dietas aumentou os níveis de fosfatase alcalina. Já a inclusão de 6% reduziu níveis de colesterol e triglicérides. O comportamento das codornas não se alterou com a inclusão de moringa nas dietas. A inclusão de até 3,83% de Moringa oleifera na dieta de codornas japonesas aumenta a qualidade de ovos sem comprometer o desempenho, o perfil bioquímico, os parâmetros sanguíneos e o comportamento delas.

ABSTRACT This study aims to evaluate effects of inclusion of moringa in Japanese quail diets on laying performance, egg quality, blood parameters, serum biochemical profile, and behavior. One hundred and forty-four Japanese quails, approximately 35-d-old, were distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and six replications. Treatments were diet inclusion of 0, 2, 4 and 6% of dried and ground moringa leaves. The inclusion of moringa in diets reduces the quadratic feed intake up to the level of 1.20%, increases weight of eggs with a quadratic behavior up to 3.80%, and linearly increases yolk weight. Yolk color changes with higher levels of inclusion of moringa and resulted in more intense colors. The biochemical profile of quails changed slightly but remains within the normal range. The inclusion of 4% of moringa in diets increases alkaline phosphatase. Regarding cholesterol and triglycerides, diet with 6% moringa inclusion was lower when compared to the others. The behavior of laying quails does not change due to inclusion of moringa in diets. Up to 3.83% of Moringa oleifera can be included in Japanese quail diet to improve egg quality without compromising performance, biochemical profile, blood parameters and behavior.

RESUMO Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar os efeitos da esterilização em autoclave e do armazenamento em glicerol a 85% no osso cortical de cães infectados por Leishmania sp. Foram utilizados 42 cadáveres de cães com leishmaniose. Os cães foram avaliados para a presença de Leishmania sp. em cultura de medula óssea e de osso cortical. Foram coletadas 42 diáfises do fêmur direito para cultura do osso cortical antes e após a esterilização e o armazenamento em glicerol. Não houve diferença significativa no crescimento do parasito em cultura utilizando-se medula óssea ou osso cortical. Não houve crescimento de Leishmania sp. em cultura de amostras de osso cortical após a autoclavagem ou o armazenamento em glicerol. Ambos os tratamentos foram eficazes na prevenção do crescimento do parasita in vitro, de modo que foram considerados viáveis para enxerto.

ABSTRACT This study was performed to evaluate the effects of autoclaving and storage in 85% glycerol on cortical bone from dogs infected with Leishmania sp. We used 42 cadavers with leishmaniasis. The dogs were evaluated for the presence of Leishmania sp. in culture of bone marrow and by culturing cortical bone. From the infected animals, we harvested 42 diaphysis of the right femur for culture of cortical bone before and after autoclaving or storage in glycerol. There was no significant difference in growth of the parasite in culture of bone marrow or cortical bone. There was no growth of Leishmania sp. in culture of samples after autoclaving or storage in glycerol. Both treatments were effective in preventing the growth of the parasite in vitro, so it was considered viable for grafting.

RESUMO Avaliaram-se 160 radiografias das articulações coxofemorais de 40 cães de diferentes raças de grande porte, provenientes de Belo Horizonte, Brasil. As radiografias de cada animal foram obtidas em dois momentos: um (média de 7,23 meses de idade) e dois (média de 14,25 meses). Utilizaram-se o método radiográfico convencional (MRC) e o método radiográfico em distração (MRD), ambos realizados nos dois momentos. No MRC, mensurou-se o ângulo de Norberg (AN), o ângulo de inclinação (AI) e avaliou-se a presença de doença articular degenerativa (DAD). O MRD foi realizado para se estabelecer o índice de distração (ID). Os objetivos foram avaliar a presença da linha Morgan (LM) e de outros sinais de DAD, correlacionando-os com o grau de displasia coxofemoral (DCF); além de se verificar se o ID maior que 0,3 (primeiro momento) possui associação com a presença de LM (segundo momento). Verificou-se que ID, AI e encurtamento e/ou espessamento do colo femoral e formação de osteófitos foram associados à presença da LM. Observou-se que, quando o ID era maior que 0,3 no primeiro momento, a chance de um resultado positivo da LM no segundo momento aumentava em 7,2 vezes. No primeiro momento, 49 articulações apresentaram ID > 0,3. Destas, 31 (63,3%) apresentaram LM no segundo momento. Dos 31 animais que apresentaram ID ≤ 0,3 no primeiro momento, seis (19,4%) desenvolveram LM no segundo momento. Houve associação significativa entre presença de LM com o grau de DCF, e quanto mais grave a DCF, maior foi o percentual de resultados positivos da LM. Dos 24 (60%) animais que apresentaram LM, 11 (45,83%) foram classificados como displásicos graves, cinco (20,83%) como médios e oito (33,33%) como leves. Nenhum dos animais considerados suspeitos ou normais apresentou LM. Dos oito animais classificados como displásicos leves, cinco apresentaram apenas LM como sinal de DAD.

ABSTRACT We evaluated 160 hip joint radiographs of 40 dogs of different large breeds (25 females and 15 males) from the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The radiographs of each dog were obtained at two different stages: stage 1 (mean 7.23 months) and stage 2 (mean 14.25). The conventional radiographic method (CRM) and the radiographic distraction method (RDM) were used, carried out in both stages. CRM measured the Norberg angle (NA), the angle of inclination (AI) and evaluated the presence of degenerative joint disease (DJD). The MRD was performed to establish the distraction index (DI). The aims were to evaluate the presence of the Morgan line and other signs of DJD and correlate them with the degree of canine hip dysplasia (CHD) and also check if the DI greater than 0.3 (first stage) was associated with the presence of ML (second stage). It was found that DI, AI and changes of femoral neck and the formation of osteophytes were associated with the presence of ML. It was observed that if the DI is greater than 0.3 at the first stage, the chance of a positive outcome of ML in the second stage increases by 7.2 times. Thus, 49 joints showed DI > 0.3 at the first stage, in which 31 (63.3 %) presented ML at the second stage. Of the 31 animals that showed DI ≤ 0.3 at first, six (19.4%) had LM at the second stage. There has been a significant association between the presence of ML and the degree of CHD. The more severe the CHD, the higher the percentage of positive ML results. Thus, among the 24 (60 %) animals that showed ML, 11 (45.83 %) were classified as severe dysplastics, 5 (20.83%) as moderate and 8 (33.33 %) as mild. None of the animals classified as normal or borderline presented ML. Among the 8 animals classified as mild dysplastics, 5 showed only ML as DJD.

Avaliaram-se, por meio de estudo retrospectivo, o perfil epidemiológico, os sinais clínicos, as técnicas cirúrgicas utilizadas e a recuperação de cães apresentados para tratamento de luxação de patela no Hospital Veterinário da UFMG, no período de 2000 a 2010. Utilizaram-se as fichas clínico-cirúrgicas dos cães e registraram-se os dados referentes a cada animal. Foram estudadas 342 articulações nos registros de 210 animais. A luxação medial congênita bilateral foi a apresentação mais frequente, e as fêmeas foram mais acometidas. A idade dos animais variou de 32 dias a 16 anos, com maior ocorrência da luxação nos animais com até um ano de idade e massa corporal inferior a 9,1kg. Em 11,7% dos membros, a luxação era de grau I, em 39,8% grau II, em 20,5% grau III e em 28% grau IV. A frequência de claudicação pré-operatória foi maior nos cães com luxações graus III e IV. Das 342 articulações, 218 foram submetidas à cirurgia. Na avaliação pós-operatória, os animais com luxação grau IV mostraram maior frequência de claudicação. A luxação patelar acomete principalmente fêmeas, sendo a luxação congênita bilateral a apresentação mais comum, e animais jovens e de pequeno porte são mais susceptíveis. A recuperação funcional pós-operatória nas luxações grau IV é lenta e parcial.

The epidemiological profile, clinical signs, and surgical techniques used and the recovery of dogs presented for treatment of patellar luxation in the Veterinary Hospital of UFMG in the period from 2000 to 2010 were evaluated through a retrospective study. The clinical and surgical records of dogs and the data recorded for each animal were used. 342 joints in the records of 210 animals were studied. The congenital bilateral medial luxation was the most frequent occurrence and females were more affected. The age of the animals ranged from 32 days to 16 years, with higher incidence of luxation in animals under one year of age and body mass below 9.1kg. In 11.7% of the members had grade I luxation, 39.8% were grade II, 20.5% were grade III and 28% were grade IV. The frequency of preoperative claudicating was higher in dogs with luxation grades III and IV. Of the 342 joints, 218 underwent surgery. In the postoperative evaluation of animals, those with grade IV luxation showed higher claudicating frequency. The patellar luxation mainly affects females, and the bilateral congenital luxation is the most common occurrence, and young and small animals are more likely to have it. Functional recovery postoperative luxation in grade IV is slow and partial.

Relata-se o caso de um cão que recebeu injeções intra-articulares de plasma rico em plaquetas (PRP) durante o pós-operatório do tratamento cirúrgico de ruptura do ligamento cruzado cranial (RLCCr). Os resultados clínicos e da avaliação da marcha mediante plataforma de força neste paciente sugerem a utilização de injeções intra-articulares de PRP como terapia pós-cirúrgica no tratamento da RLCCr.

We report the case of a dog that received intra-articular injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) during the postoperative period of surgical treatment of cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture. Clinical, and gait analysis by the force plate in this patient might suggest the use of intra-articular injections of PRP as a post-surgical therapy in the treatment of CCL rupture.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi demonstrar os efeitos do tratamento tópico do creme à base de óleo de pequi (Caryocar coriaceum Wittm) utilizando 40 ratos (Rattus norvegicus albinus) da linhagem Wistar, machos, com 60 dias de idade. Esses foram divididos em dois grupos: I) composto por 20 ratos com feridas cutâneas tratados com aplicação tópica do creme base com 10% de óleo de pequi; II) com o mesmo número de animais que receberam a aplicação tópica do creme base sem o óleo de pequi. Após antissepsia e anestesia local foi produzida cirurgicamente ferida circular de 1 cm de diâmetro na região dorso lombar. As lesões cutâneas foram avaliadas sob o aspecto clínico, morfométrica e histológico no 3o, 7o, 14o e 21o dias pós-operatório. No grupo tratado com creme à base de óleo de pequi houve aceleração na evolução do processo cicatricial. As feridas dos animais desse grupo apresentaram redução significativa a partir do décimo quarto dia pós-operatório, bem como foram verificados nesse período achados histológicos característicos da etapa final do processo de cicatrização tais como: acentuada quantidade de fibroblastos, fibras colágenas e completo processo de reepitelização, enquanto que as feridas do grupo controle necessitaram de mais tempo para resolução do processo cicatricial.

ABSTRACT The main objective of this study was to demonstrate the effects of topical treatment with ointment containing pequi oil (Caryocar coriaceum Wittm), using 40 male 60-day-old mice (Rattus norvegicus albinus) from the Wistar line. These were divided into two groups: I) composed by 20 mice with cutaneous wounds treated by topical application of the ointment based on 10% pequi oil; II) the same number of mice, receiving the topical application of ointment without pequi oil. After antisepsis and local anesthesia, round 1-cm-diameter wounds were made on the lower back region. The wounds were evaluated in regard to clinical, morphometric and histological aspects on the 3rd, 7th, 14th and 21st postoperative days. The group treated with the pequi ointment presented acceleration in the healing process. The animals’ wounds of this group showed a meaningful reduction from the 14th postoperative day, when histological characteristics from the ending of the healing process were noted, such as a large amount of fibroblasts, collagen fibers and a complete process of reepithelialization, while the wounds of the control group needed more time for the healing process.

O objetivo deste estudo foi demonstrar os efeitos do tratamento tópico do jucá (Caesalpinia ferrea) em feridas cutâneas. Quinze caprinos machos sem raça definida foram divididos em 3 grupos de acordo com o pós-cirúrgico (7º, 14º e 21º dias). As feridas experimentais foram tratadas com a pomada composta pela casca da Caesalpinia ferrea em pó misturada com a vaselina estéril e as do grupo controle apenas com a vaselina esterilizada. A aplicação diária da pomada e da vaselina estéril foi realizada sobre ferida circular padronizada de 16 cm² de área na região torácica de cada animal. As avaliações das feridas foram feitas do ponto de vista clínico, bacteriológico, morfométrico e histopatológico nos períodos pré-determinados (7º, 14º e 21º dias). Morfometricamente, as feridas do controle apresentaram áreas cirúrgicas menores e grau de contração maior que as do grupo tratado, entretanto, histologicamente, houve completa epitelização das feridas tratadas no 21º dia, enquanto que as feridas do grupo controle necessitavam de mais tempo para resolução do processo cicatricial. No exame microbiológico realizado no momento da produção da ferida, não se observou crescimento bacteriano e no momento das biópsias, identificou-se a presença de bactérias da família Enterobacteriaceae e Staphylococcus aureus, sendo que a partir do 14º dia observou-se Staphylococcus aureus apenas no grupo controle. A utilização tópica da pomada de Caesalpinia ferrea apresentou eficiência significativa no auxílio da reparação cicatricial de feridas cutâneas de caprinos.

The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effects of the topical treatment with Brazilian ironwood (Caesalpinia ferrea) on cutaneous wounds. Fifteen male mongrel goats were divided into 3 groups according to the postoperative period ((7th, 14th and 21st days). The experimental wounds were treated with an ointment composed of Brazilian wood powder bark mixed with sterile vaseline, whereas controls were only treated with sterile Vaseline. The ointment and the sterile vaselin were daily applied on a standardized circular wound (16 cm² area) in the thoracic region of each animal. Clinical, bacteriological, morphometric and histopathological evaluations were performed in the wounds at predetermined periods (7th, 14th and 21st postoperative days). Morphometrically, control wounds had smaller surgical areas and greater degree of contraction than those from the treated group. However, histologically, there was a complete epithelialization of the treated wounds on the 21st day, whereas control wounds required longer time for healing. In the microbiological evaluation performed at the moment of wound production, there was no bacterial growth. During biopsies, Enterobacteriaceae bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus were identified; from the 14th day, the latter was only observed in the control group. The topical use of Caesalpinia ferrea ointment was significantly efficient to help healing cutaneous wounds in goats.

Avaliaram-se e classificaram-se por meio da vídeo-artroscopia as alterações da articulação fêmoro-tíbio-patelar (FTP), 21 dias após secção experimental do ligamento cruzado cranial (LCCr) em cães, tendo como referência os parâmetros encontrados no exame artroscópico imediatamente anterior à secção. Ao exame artroscópico, foi possível visibilizar os cotos remanescentes do LCCr e as alterações articulares, como aumento da vascularização, aumento das vilosidades na membrana sinovial, bem como fibrilação e osteófitos, principalmente nas bordas trocleares do fêmur. Os resultados sugerem que a artroscopia é um método preciso de avaliação macroscópica dos tecidos articulares moles e duros.

By the use of videoarthroscopy, the changes of the stifle joint after experimental rupture of cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) in dogs were evaluated and classified, based on the parameters found at the arthroscopic examination right before the rupture. By the arthroscopic examination, it was possible to visualize the remainings of the CCL and joint changes such as increase of the vascularity and synovial proliferation increase in the synovial membranes, as well as fibrillation and irregularities on the joint surfaces and osteophyte formation, mainly on the trochlear ridges. The results suggest that arthroscopy is a precise method for macroscopic evaluation of the smooth and bone joint tissues

Testou-se a hipótese de o alo-transplante de bexiga devolver a capacidade estrutural e funcional desse órgão, usando-se 10 cães machos, saudáveis, submetidos à cistectomia parcial com preservação do trígono vesical. Utilizou-se o alo-transplante na reconstrução da vesícula urinária com acompanhamento dos animais durante 60 dias. Aos oito dias de pós-operatório, os cães apresentavam capacidade de contenção urinária e micção espontânea. Houve aumento gradativo do volume da vesícula urinária, alcançando, aos 60 dias, valores significativamente mais altos que os observados antes da cirurgia. Verificou-se integração tecidual com regeneração parcial na interface do transplante, caracterizada por reconstituição epitelial, proliferação fibroblástica, neoangiogênese e surgimento de fibras musculares lisas, aos 60 dias. Problemas como rejeição e obstrução uretral ocorreram em três cães. Conclui-se que o alo-transplante de bexiga em cães é viável e devolve a capacidade de repleção e as demais funções fisiológicas da vesícula urinária, ocorrendo regeneração parcial dos tecidos aos 60 dias de pós-operatório.

The hypothesis that urinary bladder allotransplant in dogs repairs the functional and structural capacity of this organ. Ten healthy male dogs were submitted to partial cystectomy, preserving the vesicle trigon. Allotransplant was used on the reconstruction of the urinary bladder and the animals were kept under observation for 60 days. On day seven after surgery, the dogs presented spontaneous capacity of contention and micturition. There was a gradual increase of the volume of the urinary bladder reaching to significantly higher values on day 60. Tissue integration with partial regeneration on the interface of the transplant, characterized by epithelial reconstitution, fibroblastic proliferation, neoangiogenesis and smooth muscular fibers appearance were observed on day 60. Problems as rejection and urethral obstruction occurred in three dogs. It is concluded that the allotransplant in dogs is viable, repairing the bladder capacity and other physiologic functions of the urinary bladder, although partial tissue regeneration is observed 60 days after operation.

It has been suggested that the measurement of metronidazole clearance is a sensitive method for evaluating liver function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of plasma hydroxy-metronidazole/metronidazole ratios as indicators of dynamic liver function to detect changes resulting from the various forms of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. A total of 139 individuals were studied: 14 healthy volunteers, 22 healthy, asymptomatic, consecutive anti-HCV-positive HCV-RNA negative subjects, 81 patients with chronic hepatitis C (49 with moderate/severe chronic hepatitis and 34 with mild hepatitis), and 20 patients with cirrhosis of the liver. HCV status was determined by the polymerase chain reaction. Plasma concentrations of metronidazole and its hydroxy-metabolite were measured by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection in a blood sample collected 10 min after the end of a metronidazole infusion. Anti-HCV-positive HCV-RNA-negative individuals demonstrated a significantly reduced capacity to metabolize intravenously infused metronidazole compared to healthy individuals (0.0478 ± 0.0044 vs 0.0742 ± 0.0232). Liver cirrhosis patients also had a reduced plasma hydroxy-metronidazole/metronidazole ratio when compared to the other groups of anti-HCV-positive individuals (0.0300 ± 0.0032 vs 0.0438 ± 0.0027 (moderate/severe chronic hepatitis) vs 0.0455 ± 0.0026 (mild chronic hepatitis) and vs 0.0478 ± 0.0044 (anti-HCV-positive, HCV-RNA-negative individuals)). These results suggest an impairment of the metronidazole metabolizing system induced by HCV infection that lasts after viral clearance. In those patients with chronic hepatitis C, this impairment is paralleled by progression of the disease to liver cirrhosis.

Placa e espaçador de polímero derivado do óleo de mamona (PDOM) (Ricinus communis) foram avaliados clínica, radiográfica e histologicamente na tração linear, fixação e fusão vertebral cervical em 20 cães adultos, sem raça definida, pesando entre 17 e 22kg. Foram sacrificados quatro animais aos 10, 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias de pós-operatório. Após exposição da coluna cervical, por acesso ventral, o disco intervertebral de C4-C5 foi fenestrado e a abordagem ao canal medular foi feita por meio de fenda óssea. Um espaçador de PDOM foi colocado preenchendo o defeito ósseo. Os corpos vertebrais C4-C5 foram fixados com placa do mesmo material, utilizando-se dois parafusos corticais em cada corpo vertebral. Apenas um animal apresentou déficit neurológico no pós-operatório imediato. Radiograficamente as vértebras mostravam-se normais e alinhadas, sem colapso do espaço intervertebral, porém não houve neoformação óssea entre as vértebras. Ao exame mielográfico, não houve compressão da medula espinhal. Os implantes foram efetivos em manter a tração linear e fixação das vértebras cervicais e não ocorreu a fusão vertebral.

Clinical, radiographic and histological evaluation of plate and biomechanical spacer of Ricinus communis polyurethane resin were performed in distraction, fixation and vertebral cervical fusion in 20 adult dogs, weighting between 17 and 22kg. Four animals were euthanized at 10, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after surgery. After ventral exposition of cervical spine, cervical disk fenestration was performed on intervertebral spaces C4-C5 and a slot was created. A biomechanical spacer of Ricinus communis polyurethane resin was placed to fill bone defect. C4-C5 spinous processes were fixed with plate of the same material, utilizing two cortical screws in each spinal process. Only one animal had neurological signs immediately after surgery. Radiographic examination indicated that vertebrae were normal and aligned, without intervertebral colapse. However, there was no bone neoformation between C4-C5. The implants were effective to keep the distraction and fixation of cervical spine without vertebral fusion.

Com o objetivo de avaliar a eficiência da prótese de poliuretano de mamona como substituto parcial do tendão calcâneo comum, foram utilizadas 30 coelhas da raça Nova Zelândia, entre dois e três meses de idade e peso médio de 2kg. Após anestesia geral, o procedimento cirúrgico em ambos os membros constou de incisão caudo-lateral no sentido longitudinal do terço médio ao distal da tíbia e exposição do tendão calcâneo comum. Após a tenectomia do tendão do músculo gastrocnêmio, a prótese de poliuretano de cerca de 0,5cm de extensão por 0,5cm de diâmetro foi fixada aos cotos proximal e distal do tendão, empregando-se o fio de polipropileno monofilamentar 4-0, conforme técnica modificada de Kessler. A prótese de poliuretano na forma elastomérica revelou propriedades como textura e flexibilidade semelhantes à do tecido tendinoso, pode ser confeccionada na forma e no tamanho almejados e permite ser moldada, cortada e esterilizada por calor úmido. Todos os animais apoiaram os membros operados imediatamente após o retorno anestésico. Não se observaram sinais clínicos de infecção e não ocorreu deiscência de ferida. Percebeu-se aumento de volume local devido ao edema, evidente na primeira semana pós-cirúrgica, que gradualmente desapareceu . À palpação foi possível delimitar com facilidade a prótese que se conservou fixa no local e intacta. Clinicamente o poliuretano de mamona não induziu reação desfavorável que comprometesse a cicatrização tendínea, podendo ser indicado como substituto temporário de tendão.

With the goal of evaluating the efficiency of a prosthesis of castor-oil plant (Ricinus communis) polyurethane as a partial substitute for common calcaneous tendon, 30 New Zealand female rabbits, aging between two to three months, weighting about 2kg were used. After general anesthesia, the surgical procedure in both members consisted of rear lateral longitudinal incision, in the medium third of the distal of tibia and exposition of the common calcaneous tendon. After the tenectomies of the gastrocnemius muscle tendon, the polyurethane prosthesis of about 0,5cm in length by 0,5 in diameter was seized to the proximal and distal of the tendon stumps, using polypropylene 4-0 suture just like the Keessler modified technique. The prosthesis of polyurethane in the form of elastomers revealed qualities like the texture and flexibility similar to the tendon tissue, and it can be made in the form and size desired. In addition, it can be shaped, cut and sterilized in wet heat. All animals could stand on the surgically treated members immediately after the end of anesthetic effect. No clinical signs of infection and no dehiscence of the cut were observed. An increase of local volume, due to the edema, evident in the first week after the surgery could be noted, which gradually disappeared. It was possible to detect easily upon touch the prosthesis which remained fixed in place. Clinically, the polyurethane of castor-oil plant did not induce any unfavorable reaction which could compromise the tendon healing and can be indicated as a temporary substitute of a tendon.

Foram utilizados 11 cães de ambos os sexos, sem raça definida, clinicamente sadios, com média de peso de 12kg e idade entre dois e cinco anos, para avaliação de dois métodos de tratamento da ferida cutânea produzida pela transfixação óssea percutânea da tíbia íntegra. Em seis animais empregou-se haste de polipropileno com ponta de algodão embebida em álcool iodado a 0,2% para limpeza dos orifícios de penetração dos pinos. Em cinco cães usou-se soro fisiológico sob pressão pulsátil (± 30 psi). Em ambos os casos, os tratamentos eram repetidos a cada três a quatro dias, por um período de quatro semanas. Espécimes clínicos foram colhidos em anaerobiose após 3, 7, 14 e 28 dias da cirurgia, imediatamente antes dos tratamentos, semeados em meios de cultura específicos para isolamento de bactérias anaeróbias, aeróbias e leveduras. Os cães do grupo tratado com soro fisiológico apresentaram diminuta exsudação purulenta, enquanto que nos tratados com álcool iodado a ferida apresentou-se seca ou com diminuta exsudação de serosanguinolenta a serosa. A avaliação microbiológica revelou predomínio de Staphylococcus spp. Não houve diferença entre os tratamentosn quanto à avaliação microbiológica. Os resultados permitiram concluir que ambos os métodos foram eficientes no pós-operatório da transfixação percutânea.

Eleven dogs, of both sexes, average weight of 12kg, with ages ranging from two to five years were used with the objective of evaluating two treatments of skin wounds produced after percutaneous bone transfixation of the tibia. In six animals, cotton swabs embedded in 0.2% iodine-alcohol were used to clean the areas of pin perforations. In five dogs, a 0.9% sodium chloride solution, under approximate 30 psi pulse pressure, was used. In both cases, and treatments were carried out every three to four days, during four weeks. Clinical specimens were collected under anaerobic conditions, immediately before the treatments, and on days 3, 7, 14 and 28 after surgery. Samples were cultured in specific media in order to allow isolation of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and yeast. Dogs treated with sodium chloride solution showed little purulent exudation, while dogs treated with iodine-alcohol presented dry skin wounds with minimum blood-serous to serous exudation. The microbiological evaluation revealed predominance of Staphylococcus spp, but no differences were observed between the two treatments. The results allowed to conclude that both methods are efficient for post-surgical treatments of bone percutaneous transfixation in dogs.

O exame de um cão de quatro meses de idade, macho, sem raça definida, com peso de 5,7kg mostrou que ele se apoiava com os cotovelos e apresentava desvio acentuado bilateral do rádio e da ulna. Ao exame radiográfico, observou-se fratura proximal bilateral do rádio. Após avaliações clínica e radiológica foi indicada a osteotomia corretiva e distração osteogênica do membro anterior esquerdo. O procedimento cirúrgico constou de osteotomia na diáfise proximal do rádio e ulna e emprego de fixadores externos compostos por quatro pinos de Kirschner e duas barras metálicas rosqueadas, configurando um fixador tipo II, bilateral uniplanar dinâmico. Antes da fixação dos pinos com acrílico, os fragmentos ósseos fraturados foram separados em aproximadamente 0,5cm. Após 10 dias, iniciou-se a distração de 1,0mm/dia durante 30 dias. A consolidação da fratura foi observada radiograficamente aos 67 dias após a intervenção, quando o aparelho foi removido. Procedimento semelhante foi realizado no membro anterior direito, quando o animal se encontrava com 16 meses de idade. Foi necessária a retirada de uma cunha óssea de aproximadamente 1,0cm para a correção angular. Atualmente, o cão mostra apoio normal do membro anterior esquerdo e discreto desvio valgus do direito devido à quebra do implante.

The clinical exam of a male mongrel dog, 4-month-old, and 5.7kg of live weight, showed that the dog supported with the elbows and it was observed accentuated bilateral rotacional deformity of the radius and ulna. Radiographs of the radius and ulna revealed proximal fracture of the radius. After clinical and radiographic evaluation it was indicated the corrective osteotomy and distraction osteogenesis of the left foremember. The surgical procedure consisted in osteotomy in the diaphysis of the radius and ulna, and the utilization of external fixators composed by four Kirschner’s pins and two metallic thread bars, configuring a fixator type II, bilateral uniplanar dynamic. Before the fixation of the pins with acrylic, the fractured bony fragments were separated in approximately 0.5cm. Starting 10 days post surgery, the radial osteotomy site was distracted at a rate of 1.0mm every day for 30 days. The consolidation of the osteotomy site was observed radiographically 67 days after the intervention, when the fixator was removed. Similar procedure was accomplished in the right foremember at the age of 16 months. At this moment, it was necessary to remove a coins bony of approximately 1.0cm for correction of the limb angulation. At present, the dog shows normal function and support of the left foremember and light valgus deformity of the right foremember due to the broken implants.
