Abstract Background The use of the timed up and go (TUG) test to assess cardiorespiratory fitness in patients with heart disease has not been well defined in the literature. Objectives Test the association between TUG and peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak), construct an equation based on TUG to predict VO2peak, and determine a cutoff point to estimate VO2peak ≥ 20 mL/kg/min. Methods This cross-sectional study included 201 patients with coronary artery disease or heart failure, between 36 and 92 years of age, who underwent TUG and cardiopulmonary exercise test. Correlation, ROC curve, multiple linear regression, and Bland-Altman analyses were performed. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results The mean age of the total sample was 67 ± 13 years, and 70% of participants were male. The mean VO2peak was 17 ± 6 mL/kg/min, and the mean TUG time was 7 ± 2.5 seconds. The correlation between VO2peak and TUG was r = −0.54 (p < 0.001), and R2 was 0.30. The following equation was developed based on TUG: V O 2 peak = 33.553 + ( − 0.149 × age ) + ( − 0.738 × TUG ) + ( − 2.870 × sex ); a value of 0 was assigned to the male sex and 1 to the female sex (adjusted R: 0.41; adjusted R2: 0.40). The VO2peak estimated by the equation was 18.81 ± 3.2 mL/kg/min, and the VO2peak determined by cardiopulmonary exercise test was 18.18 ± 5.9 mL/kg/min (p > 0.05). The best cutoff point in the TUG for VO2peak ≥ 20 mL/kg/min was ≤ 5.47 seconds (area under the curve: 0.80; 95% confidence interval: 0.74 to 0.86). Conclusions TUG and VO2peak showed a significant association. A prediction equation for VO2peak was developed and validated internally with good performance. The cutoff point in the TUG to predict VO2peak ≥ 20 mL/kg/min was ≤ 5.47 seconds.

Resumo Fundamento A utilização do teste timed up and go (TUG) na avaliação da aptidão cardiorrespiratória em cardiopatas não está bem definida na literatura. Objetivos Testar a associação entre o TUG e o consumo de oxigênio de pico (VO2pico), construir uma equação com base no TUG para prever o VO2pico e determinar um ponto de corte para estimar um VO2pico ≥ 20 mL.kg−1.min−1. Métodos Estudo transversal com 201 indivíduos portadores de doença arterial coronariana ou insuficiência cardíaca, com idade entre 36 e 92 anos, submetidos ao TUG e ao teste cardiopulmonar de exercício. Foram realizadas análises de correlação, curva ROC, regressão linear múltipla e Bland-Altman. Um p < 0,05 foi adotado como significante. Resultados A média de idade da amostra total foi 67 ± 13 anos, e 70% dos participantes eram do sexo masculino. A média de VO2pico foi de 17 ± 6 mL.kg−1.min−1 e a média de desempenho no TUG foi de 7 ± 2,5 segundos. A correlação entre o VO2pico e o TUG foi r = −0,54 (p < 0,001) e R2 de 0,30. Foi desenvolvida a equação com base no TUG: V O 2 pico = 33 , 553 + ( − 0 , 149 ∗ idade ) + ( − 0 , 738 ∗ T U G ) + ( − 2 , 870 ∗ sexo ); sendo atribuído o valor 0 ao sexo masculino e 1 ao sexo feminino (R ajustado: 0,41; R2 ajustado: 0,40). O VO2pico estimado pela equação foi 18,81 ± 3,2 mL.kg−1.min−1 e o determinado pelo teste cardiopulmonar de exercício foi 18,18 ± 5,9 mL.kg−1.min−1 (p > 0,05). O melhor ponto de corte para o VO2pico ≥ 20 mL.kg−1.min−1 foi de ≤ 5,47 segundos (área sob a curva: 0,80; intervalo de confiança de 95%: 0,74 a 0,86). Conclusões O TUG e o VO2pico apresentaram associação significativa. A equação preditiva do VO2pico foi desenvolvida e validada internamente com bom desempenho. O ponto de corte no TUG para prever um VO2pico ≥ 20 mL.kg−1.min−1 foi ≤ 5,47 segundos.

Resumo Investigamos os efeitos da desaceleração econômica do período 2015-2018 sobre a desconcentração territorial da indústria no Brasil, bem como identificamos quais estruturas setoriais são territorialmente reforçadas ou enfraquecidas. As indústrias geradoras de mais alto valor agregado, produtividade e salários, que nas últimas três décadas têm reduzido participação na estrutura produtiva brasileira, foram ainda mais negativamente impactadas na recessão recente. As conclusões apontam para o reforço de um padrão de desconcentração espúria, no qual porções desenvolvidas e industrializadas do território e com maior geração de valor agregado são mais afetadas – perderam mais empregos industriais e mais salários – que as áreas especializadas em commodities agrominerais caracterizadas por baixos níveis de produtividade e valor agregado.

Abstract We investigated how the economic slowdown of the 2015-2018 period affected the territorial deconcentration of the Brazilian industry, as well as which sectoral structures are territorially strengthened or weakened. Industries with higher added value, productivity and wages, which have reduced participation in the Brazilian production structure in the last three decades, were even more negatively impacted in the recent recession. The conclusions point to the strengthening of a pattern of spurious deconcentration in which the developed and industrialized areas of the territory are more affected—they have lost more jobs and wages—than those specialized in agromineral commodities.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: It is known that elective inguinal hernioplasties are safe procedures, but in an emergency setting, they have higher rates of complications and hospital costs. Despite this, quantitative studies on the subject in Brazil are still scarce. AIMS: To evaluate the trend in hospitalization rates, hospital mortality, and costs for inguinal hernia in an emergency, regarding gender and age group. METHODS: This is a time series study with data from the Unified Health System (SUS), at the national level, from 2010 to 2019. RESULTS: The overall hospitalization rate (p=0.007; b<0,02) in all age groups (p<0.005; b<0) in both genders indicated a decreasing trend. The general mortality rate in both genders and in most age groups showed an increasing trend (p<0.005), as well as the cost of hospitalization in all age groups of both genders. CONCLUSIONS: Urgent hospitalization rates for inguinal hernia in Brazil have shown a steady or decreasing trend; however, hospital mortality and costs per hospitalization have demonstrated an increasing trend in recent years.

RESUMO RACIONAL: Sabe-se que as hernioplastias inguinais eletivas são procedimentos seguros, mas que, em caráter de urgência, têm maiores taxas de complicações e custos hospitalares. Apesar disso, ainda são escassos os estudos quantitativos sobre o tema no Brasil. OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a tendência das taxas de internação, mortalidade hospitalar e custos por hérnia inguinal em caráter de urgência, quanto ao sexo e faixa etária. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de um estudo de séries temporais com dados do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), em nível nacional, no período de 2010 a 2019. RESULTADOS: A taxa de internação geral (p=0,007; b<0,02) em todas as faixas etárias (p<0,005; b<0) nos dois sexos indicou tendência decrescente. A taxa de mortalidade geral em ambos os sexos e na maioria das faixas etárias apresentou tendência crescente (p<0,005), assim como o custo da internação em todas as faixas etárias de ambos os sexos. CONCLUSÕES: As taxas de internação em caráter de urgência por hérnia inguinal, no Brasil, apresentaram tendência estacionária ou decrescente, entretanto, a mortalidade hospitalar e os custos por internação mostraram tendência crescente nos últimos anos.

ABSTRACT. This study examined the inclusion of untreated or urea-ammoniated CGT on the chemical composition, pH, gas, and effluent losses, dry matter recovery (DMR), and aerobic stability of elephantgrass silage. The experiment was laid out in a randomized design with a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement represented by three levels of inclusion of CGT during ensiling (0, 5, or 10%) and three levels of ammoniation of CGT with urea before ensiling (0, 4 or 8% for 28 days), using four replications. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and Tukey's test, considering a 5% significance level. The pH and DM, NDIN, ADIN, NDF and ADF contents of the silages increased (p < 0.05) with the inclusion of CGT, regardless of ammoniation. The lowest (p < 0.05) effluent loss was achieved using 10% of CGT ammoniated with 8% urea. In contrast, the elephantgrass silage exhibited the lowest (p < 0.05) gas loss and the greatest (p < 0.05) DMR. The inclusion of CGT compromised the aerobic stability of the silage. Therefore, the inclusion of CGT - either untreated or ammoniated - in the ensiling of elephantgrass is not recommended.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the resistance of gastrointestinal nematodes in goats and sheep to the anthelmintic drugs levamisole, ivermectin, and albendazole in the metropolitan region of São Luís Island, Maranhão, Brazil. Fecal samples were collected from 150 animals across four different farms; two farms had goats, and the other two had sheep. The samples were then randomly divided into three to four groups of 10 animals: Group I: control, without treatment; Group II: ivermectin treatment; Group III: levamisole treatment; and Group IV: albendazole treatment. Stool samples were collected from the rectal ampulla one day before treatment and 10 days after anthelmintic treatment. Individual coproparasitological examinations were performed using the modified McMaster technique at the Animal Health Laboratory of the Federal Institute of Maranhão, Campus São Luís-Maracanã. The efficacies of the anthelmintic drugs against gastrointestinal nematodes in goats and sheep were: 14.28%, and 13.6% for ivermectin; 0% and 79.4% for levamisole; and 59.8% and 3.43% for albendazole, respectively Gastrointestinal nematodes demonstrated multiple anthelmintic resistance, as the percentage reduction in egg count was less than 95% and the lower limit of the confidence interval was less than 90%.

Resumo Objetivou-se determinar a resistência de nematoides gastrintestinais aos anti-helmínticos levamisol, ivermectina e albendazol em caprinos e ovinos da região metropolitana da Ilha de São Luís, Maranhão, Brasil. Foram coletadas amostras de fezes de 150 animais de quatro propriedades diferentes, sendo 2 com caprinos e 2 com ovinos, e aleatoriamente distribuídos de três a quatro grupos de 10 animais: Grupo I: grupo controle, sem tratamento. Grupo II: tratado com anti-helmíntico à base de ivermectina, administrado oralmente na dose de 200 mcg/kg; Grupo III: tratado com anti-helmíntico à base de levamisol, administrado oralmente na dose de 7,5mg/kg e Grupo IV: tratado com anti-helmíntico à base de albendazol administrado oralmente na dose de 3mg/kg. Amostras de fezes foram colhidas da ampola retal um dia antes do tratamento e 10 dias após o tratamento anti-helmíntico. Foram feitos exames coproparasitológicos individuais, pela técnica de McMaster modificada, no Laboratório de Sanidade Animal, do Instituto Federal do Maranhão (IFMA), Campus São Luís-Maracanã. A ivermectina, na espécie caprina, mostrou eficácia de 14,28%, enquanato para ovina, 13,6 e 52,2%. Considerando o levamisol na espécie caprina, não apresentou eficácia contra os nematoides gastrintestinais, enquanto para ovinos, apresentou eficácia de 79,4%. Já o albendazol, apresentou eficácia de 59,8% para caprinos, e 3,43% para ovinos. Os nematoides gastrintestinais demonstraram resistência múltipla (RAM), visto que a percentagem de redução da contagem de ovos foi inferior a 95% e o limite inferior do intervalo de confiança menor do que 90%.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Brazil is facing increasing cycles of numbers of infected people and deaths resulting from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This situation involves a series of factors, including the behavior of the population, that can be decisive for controlling the disease. OBJECTIVE: To determine the knowledge, attitudes and practices of the Brazilian population regarding COVID-19. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional survey-type study, conducted using a population sample from different Brazilian states. METHODS: A quantitative, descriptive and analytical approach was used. Sampling was done according to convenience and via snowballing. The data collection instrument was a knowledge, attitudes and practices system. RESULTS: 1,655 people from all over Brazil participated in the survey; 80% were living in the southern region and 70.15% were female. More than 90% had knowledge and good attitudes relating to the means of transmission, preventive care and symptoms associated with COVID-19, although their knowledge and attitudes were not fully reflected in daily practices, for which there was lower adherence (80%). Greater knowledge was correlated with older participants, larger number of children, female sex and marital status; better attitude, with female sex and complete higher education; and better practices, with greater age, larger number of children and female sex. CONCLUSION: A large part of the population has general knowledge about COVID-19, but not all knowledge was applied in practice. Older people, females and university graduates stood out as the best informed and most committed to controlling the disease.

Resumo Nosso objetivo foi analisar a associação combinada entre características dos pais e indicadores de adiposidade dos filhos com o risco metabólico em adolescentes. Foi realizado estudo transversal com 972 adolescentes e seus pais. Observamos que adolescentes com sobrepeso que possuem mãe com peso normal apresentaram menor risco metabólico em comparação com seus pares com mães que apresentam sobrepeso. Concluímos que o status de peso da mãe modera a relação entre indicadores de obesidade e risco metabólico dos adolescentes.

Abstract Our aim was to analyze the joint association of parental characteristics and offspring obesity indicators with metabolic risk in adolescents. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 972 adolescents and their parents. We observed that overweight adolescents who have a normal weight mother show lower metabolic risk in comparison with their counterparts with overweight mothers. In conclusion, mother’s weight status moderates the relationship between offspring’ obesity indicators and metabolic risk in adolescents.

Determinar la asociación de la estructura de las unidades básicas de salud (UBS) y del proceso de trabajo de los equipos de atención primaria con los determinantes sociales y las tasas de hospitalización por afecciones que podrían tratarse en la atención primaria en menores de 5 años en Brasil. Métodos. Estudio longitudinal ecológico, con datos secundarios del Sistema de Informaciones Hospitalarias y los tres ciclos del Programa Nacional de Mejora del Acceso y de la Calidad de la Atención Básica (PMAQ-AB) (2012, 2014, 2017-2018). Se analizaron 42.916 UBS. Se aplicó un modelo multinivel con pendiente fija e intercepción aleatoria. En el primer nivel, se analizaron el desenlace (tasas de hospitalización por afecciones que podrían tratarse en los servicios de atención primaria) y las variables explicativas (indicadores estructurales y procedimentales) consolidados por UBS. En el segundo nivel, se incluyeron determinantes sociales municipales (representados por un criterio de estratificación que combina el tamaño del municipio con indicadores que influyen en la gestión de salud). Se utilizó la prueba de la t con la corrección de Bonferroni para comparar las medias de los indicadores entre las regiones y la regresión lineal multinivel para estimar los coeficientes de correlación. Resultados. La tasa de hospitalización por afecciones que podrían tratarse en los servicios de atención primaria en menores de 5 años fue de 62,78/100 mil habitantes por área estimada de cobertura de UBS. Los siguientes factores presentaron una asociación directa con el desenlace: participación en uno o más ciclos del PMAQ-AB; planificación del equipo; horario especial; dependencias de atención infantil en la unidad; y disponibilidad de vacunas. La variable relativa a equipos, materiales e insumos y la clasificación como municipio pequeño o mediano se asociaron inversamente con las hospitalizaciones por afecciones que podrían tratarse en los servicios de atención primaria. Conclusiones. Las hospitalizaciones de menores de 5 años por afecciones que podrían tratarse en los servicios de atención primaria pueden reducirse mejorando los indicadores estructurales y procedimentales de las UBS y los determinantes sociales municipales.

ABSTRACT Objective. To investigate whether structural aspects of primary care units (PCUs) and the work processes of primary care teams are associated with the rate of hospitalizations for primary care-sensitive conditions (HPCSC) in children younger than 5 years of age in Brazil. Method. For this longitudinal ecological study, secondary data were obtained from the Brazilian Hospital Information System and from three cycles of the National Program for Access and Quality Improvement in Primary Care (PMAQ-AB) (2012, 2014, 2017/2018). The analysis included 42 916 PCUs. A multilevel random intercept model with fixed slope was used. In the first level, the outcome (HPCSC rates) and explanatory variables (structure and process indicators) aggregated by PCU were analyzed. Social determinants (represented by a stratification criterion combining municipality population and health care management indicators) were entered in the second level. The t test with Bonferroni correction was used to compare indicator means between regions, and multilevel linear regression was used to estimate the correlation coefficients. Results. The HPCSC rate in children younger than 5 years was 62.78/100 thousand population per estimated PCU coverage area. A direct association with the outcome was observed for: participation in one or more PMAQ-AB cycles; team planning; special hours; dedicated pediatric care area; and availability of vaccines. Equipment, materials, supplies, and being a small or medium-size municipality were inversely associated with HPCSC. Conclusions. HPCSC rates in children below 5 years of age may potentially be reduced through improvements in PCU structure and process indicators and in municipal social determinants.

Identificar a associação da estrutura das unidades básicas de saúde (UBS) e do processo de trabalho das equipes de atenção primária com determinantes sociais e taxas de internações por condições sensíveis à atenção primária (ICSAP) em menores de 5 anos no Brasil. Métodos. Estudo longitudinal ecológico, com dados secundários do Sistema de Informações Hospitalares e dos três ciclos do Programa Nacional de Melhoria do Acesso e da Qualidade da Atenção Básica (PMAQ-AB) (2012, 2014, 2017/2018). Foram analisadas 42 916 UBS. Foi realizada modelagem multinível com angulação fixa e intercepto aleatório. No primeiro nível, foram analisados o desfecho (taxas de ICSAP) e as variáveis explicativas (indicadores estruturais e processuais), agregados por UBS. No segundo nível, foram incluídos determinantes sociais municipais (representados por critério de estratificação que combina o porte do município com indicadores que influenciam a gestão de saúde). Utilizou-se o teste t com correção de Bonferroni para comparar as médias dos indicadores entre as regiões, e a regressão linear multinível para estimar os coeficientes de correlação. Resultados. A taxa de ICSAP em menores de 5 anos foi de 62,78/100 mil habitantes por área estimada de cobertura de UBS. Apresentaram associação direta com o desfecho: participação em um ou mais ciclos do PMAQ-AB; planejamento da equipe; horário especial; dependências para atenção infantil na unidade; e disponibilidade de vacinas. A variável equipamentos, materiais e insumos e a classificação como município de porte pequeno ou médio associaram-se inversamente às ICSAP. Conclusões. As ICSAP em menores de 5 anos podem ser potencialmente reduzidas pela melhoria dos indicadores estruturais e processuais das UBS e dos determinantes sociais municipais.

Abstract Aims: This study aimed to compare the sedentary time measured using the ActiGraph GT3X accelerometer with the measurement of sitting and standing time obtained by ActivPAL inclinometers. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted with a sample of 60 schoolchildren (34 males) of one elementary public school in Brazil. The students used both an ActiGraph GT3X accelerometer and an ActivPAL inclinometer, concurrently, positioned at the beginning and removed at the end of the school shift, for four days. For analysis, paired Student's t-tests, Pearson's correlation coefficients, intraclass correlation coefficients, and Bland-Altman plots were used. Results: When comparing sedentary time with sitting time, although correlated (r = 0.53; p < 0.001), the mean minutes were different (134.2 min/day in ActiGraph GT3X vs 120.3 min/day in ActivPAL; p < 0.001), with a bias of 13.9 min/day. When comparing the measurement of sedentary time with the sum of the sitting time plus standing time, different mean minutes were also observed (134.2 min/day in ActiGraph GT3X vs 177.0 min/day in ActivPAL; p < 0.001), and although the correlation was stronger (r = 0.75; p < 0.001), the bias was higher (−42.8 min/day). Conclusion: Sedentary time derived from the ActiGraph GT3X device should be used with caution to evaluate sedentary behavior in a school setting and may be interpreted only as non-moving activities (stationary behavior).

Abstract Persea americana Mill., belonging to the family Lauraceae, is noteworthy for the large amount of ethnopharmacological information in its regard, attributing to it many and varied medicinal properties. The tea and alcoholic extracts made from its leaves are used in folk medicine to treat various ailments. This study was designed to analyze the cytogenotoxicity and underlying chemistry of aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of avocado leaves, using the Allium cepa and micronucleus tests. The results obtained by applying the experimental models demonstrate that the extracts did not have a genotoxic effect at any of the concentrations analyzed, and even demonstrated a certain protective effect, possibly due to the presence of flavonoids and phenols, both of which are antioxidant substances. However, the extracts did present a cytotoxic effect. There were numerous karyorrhectic cells and those with nuclear alterations related to cell death. At the highest concentrations, it was possible to observe cytoplasmic alterations and binucleated cells. The extracts also caused a significant reduction in the number of cells undergoing division. These effects can be a response to the phytochemical agents present in the extracts. The results suggest that the extracts contain bioactive components that deserve further studies related to cancer therapies.

ABSTRACT Thermal treatment can modify undesirable characteristics of some woods, dimensional instability, and excessive water adsorption. The present research work aimed to assess the effect of thermal treatment on the physical properties of clone GG100 Eucalyptus wood. Wood samples were obtained from 9 year-old trees. Samples were subjected to three types of thermal treatment (T1, T2, and T3). In T1, the wood was kept in a laboratory kiln at 100 °C for 180 min. In T2, hydrothermal treatment was performed in an autoclave at 120 °C for 120 min. In T3, the combined autoclave and laboratory kiln treatments were employed. The properties evaluated were apparent density (ρa); mass loss (ML); longitudinal (βl), radial (βr), tangential (βt), and volumetric shrinkage (βv); anisotropic factor; and equilibrium moisture content. The treatments caused a decrease of ρa and increase of ML. The Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC) was lowest for T3, and had a negative correlation with ML, βt, and ∆v. The Pearson correlation analysis indicated the results of the thermal treatments were similar, but T1 presented the lowest variation of the physical properties compared to the other treatments, giving it the best predictability for practical uses.

Cinematography has shown itself to be a versatile tool in medical education, being used to study the health-illness-care process. This article describes the experience of using cinematography to discuss illness metaphors on a medicine course at a federal university in Brazil. As preparation, the students read about signification and illness metaphors. We showed the film “Still Alice” and the students debated the theme, drawing on the film’s metaphors. They then visited primary care services to apply the use of the metaphors. The findings show the importance of the social determinants of health and relevance of actions that go beyond the realm of biology. Besides being game-based, the activity was educational and sought to make learning more meaningful. The findings confirm that cinematography is an effective tool for interpreting illness metaphors and contributes to better medical practice.

A cinematografia tem se mostrado ferramenta versátil na educação médica podendo ser utilizada no estudo do processo saúde-adoecimento-cuidado. Objetiva-se relatar a experiência do uso da cinematografia para discussão das metáforas da enfermidade no curso médico de uma Universidade Federal. Como preparo, os estudantes leram sobre “Significação e metáforas da doença”. Foi exibido o filme “Para sempre Alice” e debatido o tema lido com base em suas metáforas. Posteriormente, os alunos foram à Rede Básica para aplicar o uso das metáforas. Notou-se a importância dos determinantes sociais em saúde e da relevância de ações que extrapolam o âmbito biológico. A atividade, além de lúdica, foi pedagógica e buscou tornar a aprendizagem mais significativa. Percebeu-se a efetividade da cinematografia para interpretação de metáforas da doença e contribuição para uma melhor prática médica.

La cinematografía ha mostrado ser una herramienta versátil en la educación médica pudiendo utilizarse en el estudio del proceso salud-enfermedad-cuidado. El objetivo es relatar la experiencia del uso de la cinematografía para la discusión de las metáforas de la enfermedad en el curso médico de una Universidad Federal. Como preparación, los estudiantes leyeron sobre Significación y Metáforas de la Enfermedad. Se exhibió la película “Siempre Alice” y se discutió sobre el tema leído, a partir de sus metáforas. Posteriormente, los alumnos fueron a la Red Básica para aplicar el uso de las metáforas. Se observó la importancia de los determinantes sociales en salud y de la relevancia de acciones que extrapolan el ámbito biológico. La actividad, además de lúdica, fue pedagógica y su objetivo fue hacer que el aprendizaje fuera más significativo. Se percibió la efectividad de la cinematografía para interpretación de metáforas de la enfermedad y contribuir para una mejor práctica médica.

A cinematografia tem se mostrado ferramenta versátil na educação médica podendo ser utilizada no estudo do processo saúde-adoecimento-cuidado. Objetiva-se relatar a experiência do uso da cinematografia para discussão das metáforas da enfermidade no curso médico de uma Universidade Federal. Como preparo, os estudantes leram sobre “Significação e metáforas da doença”. Foi exibido o filme “Para sempre Alice” e debatido o tema lido com base em suas metáforas. Posteriormente, os alunos foram à Rede Básica para aplicar o uso das metáforas. Notou-se a importância dos determinantes sociais em saúde e da relevância de ações que extrapolam o âmbito biológico. A atividade, além de lúdica, foi pedagógica e buscou tornar a aprendizagem mais significativa. Percebeu-se a efetividade da cinematografia para interpretação de metáforas da doença e contribuição para uma melhor prática médica.

Cinematography has shown itself to be a versatile tool in medical education, being used to study the health-illness-care process. This article describes the experience of using cinematography to discuss illness metaphors on a medicine course at a federal university in Brazil. As preparation, the students read about signification and illness metaphors. We showed the film “Still Alice” and the students debated the theme, drawing on the film’s metaphors. They then visited primary care services to apply the use of the metaphors. The findings show the importance of the social determinants of health and relevance of actions that go beyond the realm of biology. Besides being game-based, the activity was educational and sought to make learning more meaningful. The findings confirm that cinematography is an effective tool for interpreting illness metaphors and contributes to better medical practice.

La cinematografía ha mostrado ser una herramienta versátil en la educación médica pudiendo utilizarse en el estudio del proceso salud-enfermedad-cuidado. El objetivo es relatar la experiencia del uso de la cinematografía para la discusión de las metáforas de la enfermedad en el curso médico de una Universidad Federal. Como preparación, los estudiantes leyeron sobre Significación y Metáforas de la Enfermedad. Se exhibió la película “Siempre Alice” y se discutió sobre el tema leído, a partir de sus metáforas. Posteriormente, los alumnos fueron a la Red Básica para aplicar el uso de las metáforas. Resumo Objetivo: Analisar a associação entre o padrão do tempo sedentário (bouts e breaks) e o desempenho acadêmico, com ênfase no papel mediador do autoconceito. Métodos: Participaram deste estudo transversal 394 adolescentes (208 moças), de 10 a 14 anos, da sexta série de Londrina, Paraná, Brasil. O padrão do tempo sedentário foi obtido por meio de acelerometria. Definições: bouts sedentários — períodos ininterruptos em comportamento sedentário; breaks — período não sedentário entre duas séries sedentárias. O autoconceito foi estimado usando o Inventário Piers-Harris II. O desempenho acadêmico foi obtido pelas notas escolares. Resultados: Bouts sedentários curtos foram associados com maior desempenho acadêmico em rapazes (1–4 minutos: β=0,035, p=0,007) e moças (1–4 minutos: β=0,031, p=0,014; 5–14 minutos: β=0,054, p=0,001). Bouts longos (30 minutos) foram associados a menor desempenho acadêmico em rapazes (β=-0,023; p=0,011) e moças (β=-0,032; p<0,001). Para as moças, o autoconceito total e intelectual mediou a associação entre todos os padrões sedentários e o desempenho acadêmico (bouts de 1–4 minutos [total: 39% e intelectual: 42,8%]; bouts de 5–14 minutos [total: 21,5% e intelectual: 35,4%]; bouts ≥30 minutos [total: 22,6% e intelectual: 32,3%]; e breaks [total: 38,9% e intelectual: 40,7%]). Para os rapazes, o autoconceito total (56,4%) e intelectual (82,9%) mediaram apenas a associação entre bouts de 5–14 minutos e desempenho acadêmico. Conclusões: O padrão do tempo sedentário está associado ao desempenho acadêmico em adolescentes, e essa associação é mediada pelo autoconceito, principalmente em moças.

Abstract Objective: To analyze the association between the pattern of sedentary time (bouts and breaks) with academic performance, with an emphasis on the mediating role of self-concept. Methods: Participants in the cross-sectional study were 394 adolescents (208 girls), aged 10–14 years, from sixth grade from Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. The sedentary time pattern was measured through accelerometry. Definitions: sedentary bouts — uninterrupted periods of sedentary behavior; breaks — non-sedentary period between two sedentary bouts. The self-concept was estimated using the Piers-Harris II Inventory. Academic performance was obtained by school grades. Results: Short sedentary bouts were associated with higher academic performance in boys (1–4 minutes: β=0.035, p=0.007) and girls (1–4 minutes: β=0.031, p=0.014; 5–14 minutes: β=0.054, p=0.001). Long bouts (30 minutes) were associated with lower academic performance in boys (β=-0.023; p=0.011) and girls (β=-0.032; p<0.001). For girls, total and intellectual self-concept mediated the association between all sedentary pattern and academic performance (bouts 1–4 minutes [total: 39% and intellectual: 42.8%]; bouts 5–14 minutes [total: 21.5% and intellectual: 35.4%]; bouts ≥30 minutes [total: 22.6% and intellectual: 32.3%]; and breaks [total: 38.9% and intellectual: 40.7%]). For boys, the total (56.4%) and intellectual (82.9%) self-concept mediated only the association between bouts of 5–14 minute and academic performance. Conclusions: The pattern of sedentary time is associated with academic performance in adolescents and this association is mediated by self-concept, especially in girls.
