Abstract The recommendations in which the Mexican Society of Cardiology (SMC) in conjunction with the National Association of Cardiologists of Mexico (ANCAM) as well as different Mexican medical associations linked to cardiology are presented, after a comprehensive and consensual review and analysis of the topics related to cardiovascular diseases in the COVID-19 pandemic. Scientific positions are analyzed and responsible recommendations on general measures are given to patients, with personal care, healthy eating, regular physical activity, actions in case of cardio-respiratory arrest, protection of the patient and health personnel as well as precise indications in the use of non-invasive cardiovascular imaging, prescription of medications, care in specific topics such as systemic arterial hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmias and acute coronary syndromes, in addition to emphasizing electrophysiology, interventionism, cardiac surgery and in cardiac rehabilitation. The main interest is to provide the medical community with a general orientation on what to do in daily practice and patients with cardiovascular diseases in the setting of this unprecedented epidemiological crisis of COVID-19.

A set of quasi-quantitative experiments are described to relate volume and pressure variations associated to the phase changes of the main components of the air. The processes are promoted by variation of temperature using liquid nitrogen to refrigerate the air and get liquid oxygen, traces of dry ice and ice. The changes in volume and pressure associated to oxygen phase changes are used to discuss and rationalize phenomena as different as the effects of intermolecular forces on the properties of substances, industrial accidents resulting from a sudden pressure increase due to undesired reactions or even rationalize how popcorns are made. The ludic character of some of the experiments aims to promote the interest and curiosity of youngsters on scientific issues.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Metalloids have characteristics between metals and non-metals which give them, in some cases, specific properties. At least two of this chemical elements, boron and silicon, are essential to a significant number of living organisms and since some years ago it has been observed that the same metalloids may be involved in the synthesis and stabilization of some molecules relevant to the origin of life.

Assisted Sperm Morphometry Analysis (ASMA) was used to determine the sperm head dimensions (DCE) of boar by age, and then the data set clustered in sperm subpopulations (SP). To this purpose were evaluated 36 fresh and diluted semen samples of 20 Dalland domestic pigs, which were classified in 2 categories: under 18 months old and over 18 months old. The DCE (Length, µm/ Width, µm/, Area, µm²/ and Perimeter, µm) were analyzed in slides stained by Hemacolor® by the Sperm-Class Analyser® (SCA), and the mean measurements recorded. A GLM procedure was performed to evaluate the effects of boar age on sperm head dimensions and clustering analysis (FASTCLUS procedure) to separate in SP. Spermatozoa collected from older boar (over 18 months old) had head length larger (8.84 vs. 8.95 µm) than younger boar (under 18 months old), however, the width (4.44 vs. 4.32 µm), area (33.33 vs. 32.39 µm²) and perimeter (27.65 to 26.3 µm) were smaller in older boar than younger boar. Two SP were clustered in this trial to ratify the differences between younger and older pigs. The mean values of each DCE among the SP were significantly different (P<0.001). Thus, the percentage of representation of the subpopulation that includes those spermatozoa whose dimensions are the largest decreased from 41.61% in pigs under 18 months old to 20.78% in pigs over 18 months old. Whereas, the percent of representation of the SP containing the smallest spermatozoa increased from 58.39% in pigs under 18 months old to 79.22% in pigs over 18 months old. In conclusion, the age of sexually mature domestic male pig had a significant effect on the morphometric traits of their spermatozoa. Older boar had 20% more of smaller spermatozoa than younger boar.

It is still frequently referred, even in reference text-books, that the D-enantiomers of amino acids are not present in living organisms, which is not right. In the present revision/informative paper we describe a large number of D-amino acids that are present in all forms of organisms, from bacteria to human beings, in the free state, in peptides and in proteins, and give a short overview of their characteristics, physiological interaction and roles.

OBJECTIVE: To perform a comparative analysis of in-hospital results obtained from AMI patients who underwent rescue or primary PTCA. METHODS: From the Brazilian Interventional National Registry (CENIC), we selected all consecutive patients who underwent a percutaneous coronary intervention for myocardial infarction (< 24 hours), between 1997 and 2000, analyzing those undergoing a rescue (n=840) or a primary (n=8,531) procedure, and comparing their in-hospital results. RESULTS: Rescue patients were significantly younger males with anterior wall infarctions, associated with left ventricular dysfunction, but had less multivessel disease, compared with those treated with primary intervention. Coronary stents were implanted in at similar rates (56.9% vs. 54.9%; P=0.283). Procedural success were lower for rescue cases (88.1% vs. 91.2%; P<0.001), with higher mortality (7.4% vs. 5.6%; P=0.034), compared with the primary intervention group; target vessel revascularization (< 0.5%), emergency bypass surgery (< 0.3%) and reinfarction (< 2.6%) rates were similar for both strategies. Multivariate analysis identified the rescue procedure as a predictor of in-hospital death [OR(CI=95%) = 1.60 (1.17-2.19); P=0.003]. CONCLUSION: Patients who underwent a rescue coronary intervention had higher in-hospital death rates compared with those who underwent a primary coronary intervention.
