Resumo A modelagem do recrutamento em florestais tropicais é importante para estudos de sustentabilidade do manejo florestal, por dar subsídio adequado à recuperação do estoque de madeira. O objetivo do trabalho foi estimar o recrutamento após a colheita de madeira, empregando um modelo de rede neural artificial (RNA). A área de estudo está localizada na Floresta Nacional do Tapajós (55°00’ W, 2°45’ S), Pará. Em 64 ha da área de estudo, em 1979, foi realizada colheita intensiva de 72,5 m3 ha-1. Em 1981 foram instaladas, aleatoriamente, 36 parcelas permanentes de 50 m x 50 m. Essas parcelas foram mensuradas em 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 e 2012. Para modelar o recrutamento foram consideradas as variáveis da subparcela-alvo e a sua vizinhança. As estimativas obtidas no treino e na generalização da RNA foram avaliadas pelas estatísticas: correlação () e raiz quadrada do erro quadrático médio (RQRQM), sendo obtido RQRQM 35,6% e 0,89. Foi possível modelar a tendência do recrutamento ao longo do tempo em florestas tropicais, após a colheita de madeira.

Abstract Recruitment models in tropical forests are important for studies on forest management sustainability because they provide adequate support to recovery of wood stocks. The objective of this work was to estimate recruitment after wood harvesting by using an artificial neural network (ANN) model. The study area is located at Tapajós National Forest (55° 00’ W, 2° 45’ S), Pará state. In 64 ha of the study area, in 1979, an intensive harvest of 72.5 m3 ha-1 was carried out. In 1981, 36 permanent plots of 50 m x 50 m were randomly installed. These plots were measured in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 and 2012. For recruitment modeling, the variables of the target subplot and its vicinity were considered. The estimates obtained in ANN training and generalization were evaluated by statistics: correlation () and root mean square error (RMSE) were determined: RMSE 35.6% and 0.89. Recruitment tendency could be modeled over time in tropical forests after wood harvesting.

RESUMO As florestas secundárias de Mata Atlântica possuem um papel importante no contexto das mudanças climáticas por atuarem como sumidouro de carbono da atmosfera. Entretanto, essas florestas podem se transformar em fonte de carbono com o aumento da mortalidade de árvores. O conhecimento dessa mudança é possível mediante inventários florestais contínuos que forneçam informações sobre a dinâmica de crescimento das árvores. Desta forma, objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a dinâmica de crescimento em carbono de um fragmento de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual, com 44,11 ha, situado no Parque Tecnológico de Viçosa - MG. Os inventários florestais foram realizados em vinte parcelas de 10 m x 50 m, nos anos de 2010 e 2015, em que todos os fustes com dap ≥ 5 cm foram mensurados, identificados botanicamente e classificados em grupos ecológicos. O volume do fuste foi obtido por meio de equação volumétrica. A biomassa e o carbono foram quantificados para os compartimentos acima do solo (fuste, galhos e folhas) e abaixo do solo (raízes). A dinâmica de crescimento em carbono foi avaliada por meio do incremento bruto (Ib) e incremento periódico anual em carbono das espécies (IPAli). O Ib foi de 12,72 MgC ha-1, incluindo o carbono dos fustes que ingressaram e morreram durante o período de monitoramento. O estoque de carbono aumentou 10,01 MgC ha-1, resultando em um IPAli de 2,00 MgC ha-1 ano-1. Assim, conclui-se que as árvores do fragmento florestal apresentam crescimento positivo do estoque de carbono em virtude do avanço sucessional, ratificando a importância das florestas secundárias de Mata Atlântica na mitigação de gases de efeito estufa da atmosfera.

ABSTRACT The secondary Atlantic forests play an important role in the context of climate change, acting as a carbon sink for the atmosphere. However, these forests can become a carbon source in case of increased tree mortality. Knowing this change is possible through continuous forest inventories that provide information on the dynamics of tree growth. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the carbon growth dynamics of a Seasonal Semideciduous Forest fragment, with 44.11 ha, located in the Parque Tecnológico de Viçosa - MG. The forest inventories were carried out in twenty plots of 10 m x 50 m, in the years of 2010 and 2015, where all stems with dbh ≥ 5 cm were measured, botanically identified and classified in ecological groups. The stem volume was obtained through volumetric equation. Biomass and carbon stock were quantified for compartments located above the ground (stem, branches and leaves) and below ground (roots). The dynamics of carbon growth were evaluated by Gross Increment (GI) and Periodic Annual Increment in carbon of the species (PAI). The GI was 12.72 MgC ha-1, including the carbon from the stems that were recruited and died during the monitoring period. The carbon stock increased 10.01 MgC ha-1, resulting in an PAI of 2.00 MgC ha-1 year-1. Thus, it is concluded that the forest fragment present positive carbon stock growth due to successional progression, ratifying the importance of secondary forest of the Atlantic forest in the mitigation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

ABSTRACT The heterogeneous behavior of wood during drying is a process difficult to control. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the neuro-fuzzy hybrid system for monitoring wood moisture during drying. Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis samples (2 x 2 x 4 cm) were saturated and dried in climatic chamber for 15 days. Basic density was determined by the dry mass/saturated volume ratio. Two neuro-fuzzy systems were developed to monitor wood moisture, the first based on the genetic material and drying period and the second based on basic density and drying period. The drying rate of wood samples was higher at the initial period and all reached equilibrium moisture content after 15 days. Density showed relationship with wood moisture during the study period. Both systems have the potential to monitor moisture, however, neuro-fuzzy system based on basic density and drying period showed better results and is therefore more suitable.

ABSTRACT In forest science it is important evaluate new technologies from computational science. This work aimed to test a different kind of metaheuristic called Variable Neighborhood Search in a forest planning problem. The management total area has 4.210 ha distributed in 120 stands in ages between 1 and 6 years old and site index since 22 m to 31 m. The problem was modelled considering the maximization of the net present value subject to the restrictions: annual cut volume between 140.000 m³ and 160.000 m³, harvester ages equal to 5, 6 or 7 years, and the impossibility of division of the management unity at harvester time. It was evaluated different settings for the Variable Neighborhood Search, varying the quantity of neighbours, the neighbourhood structure and number or generations. 30 repetitions were performed for each setting. The results were compared to the one obtained from integer linear programming and linear programming. The integer linear programming considered the best solution obtained after 1 hour of processing. The best setting to the Variable Neighborhood Search was 100 neighbours, a neighbourhood structure with changes in 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% of prescriptions and 500 iterations. The results shown by the Variable Neighborhood Search was 2,77% worse than one obtained by the integer linear programming with 1 hours of processing, and 2,84% worse than the linear programming. It is possible to conclude that the presented metaheuristic can be used satisfactorily in a resolution of forest scheduling problem when the best parameters are chosen.

RESUMO No manejo florestal é importante projetar a distribuição diamétrica ao longo do ciclo de corte para subsidiar as técnicas silviculturais mais adequadas à estrutura da floresta. O objetivo do trabalho foi projetar a distribuição diamétrica ao longo do ciclo de corte utilizando Matriz de Transição Markoviana. Em 1979 foi realizada a colheita seletiva, com intensidade de 72,5 m3 ha-1, em uma área de 64 ha, na Floresta Nacional do Tapajós, Pará. Em 1981 foram instaladas, aleatoriamente, 36 parcelas permanentes de 50 m x 50 m medidas sucessivamente em 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 e 2012. Para a projeção foram usadas duas matrizes de transição: uma com intervalo de tempo de um ano (1981 a 1982) e outra de dois anos (1981 a 1983). Todas as projeções apresentaram distribuição diamétrica em forma de “J” invertido, com pequena descontinuidade no último ano (2012). Houve aderência da distribuição diamétrica a 5% de significância entre os dados observados e estimados até aos 11 anos de projeção. A matriz de transição pode ser usada para projetar a distribuição diamétrica após a colheita em pequenos períodos de tempo após a colheita florestal.

ABSTRACT In forest management, it is important to project diametric distribution along the cutting cycle to subsidize the most suitable silvicultural techniques to forest structure. The aim of this work was to project diametric distribution along the cutting cycle using Markov Transition Matrix. In 1979, selective harvest was performed with an intensity of 72.5 m3 ha-1, in a 64 ha area in ‘Floresta Nacional do Tapajós’ - Pará state (PA). In 1981, 36 permanent plots of 50m x 50m were randomly installed and measured successively in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 and 2012. For the projection, two transition matrices were used: one with time interval of one year (1981 to 1982) and another of two years (1981 to 1983). All projections showed diametric distribution in inverted “J” form, with small discontinuity last year (2012). There was adherence of diametric distribution at 5% significance between observed and estimated data, up to 11 years of projection. Transition matrix can be used to project diametric distribution after harvest in short periods of time after the forest harvest.

RESUMO A modelagem de crescimento e produção, a nível de distribuição diamétrica, é uma importante ferramenta para compreender a dinâmica florestal e prognosticar se a floresta funcionará como sumidouro ou fonte emissora de CO2. Desta forma, objetivou-se prognosticar a distribuição diamétrica e o estoque de carbono de um fragmento florestal utilizando a cadeia de Markov para avaliar os impactos da dinâmica de crescimento no sequestro de carbono da floresta. Vinte parcelas de 10x50 m foram inventariadas, nos anos de 2010 e 2015, contabilizando os fustes com dap > 5 cm. A distribuição diamétrica foi projetada para os anos de 2015 e 2020, considerando todo o fragmento e os grupos ecológicos (pioneiras e não-pioneiras). O estoque em volume foi obtido por meio de equação alométrica enquanto o de biomassa e carbono pela multiplicação do volume pela média da densidade básica e do teor de carbono da madeira, respectivamente. A distribuição diamétrica estimada para o fragmento e grupos ecológicos não diferiu estatisticamente dos valores observados pelo teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov (p-valor < 0,05). O número de fustes ha-1 estimados do fragmento passou de 1692, em 2015, para 1841, em 2020. Já para as espécies pioneiras e não-pioneiras, o número de fustes ha-1 passou de 476 e 1203, em 2015, para 472 e 1362, em 2020, respectivamente. O estoque de carbono aumentou 5,69 MgC ha-1, sendo a maior contribuição das espécies não-pioneiras. Assim, conclui-se que a distribuição diamétrica continuará como “J-invertido” e o fragmento florestal seguirá atuando como sumidouro de carbono nos próximos anos.

ABSTRACT Growth and yield modeling at the diameter distribution level is an important tool to understand forest dynamics and to predict whether a forest will act as a CO2 emissions source or sink. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to determine the diameter distribution and carbon stock of a forest fragment using the Markov chain to evaluate the impact of growth dynamics on forest carbon capture. Twenty plots of 10x50m were inventoried, between 2010 and 2015, counting the stems with dbh > 5 cm. Diameter distribution was projected for 2015 and 2020, considering the whole fragment and the ecological groups (pioneer and non-pioneer tree species). The volume was determined using allometric equation while biomass and carbon was determined by multiplying the volume by the basic wood density and the carbon content, respectively. The diameter distribution estimated for the fragment and ecological groups did not differ statistically from the values observed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (p-value < 0.05). The number of stems ha-1 estimated in the fragment was from 1,692 in 2015 to 1,841 in 2020. For the pioneer and non-pioneer species, the number of stems ha-1 was from 476 and 1,203 in 2015 to 472 and 1,362 in 2020, respectively. The carbon stock increased 5.69 MgC ha-1, with the greater contribution coming from the non-pioneer species. Therefore, it was concluded that the diameter distribution would remain “J-inverted” and the forest fragment would continue to act as a carbon sink over the coming years.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a correlação entre variáveis ambientais, econômicas e sociais e os royalties arrecadados nos principais municípios produtores de petróleo e minério. Os dados discriminados por cidade, entre os anos de 2004 e 2010, foram a receita total das prefeituras, os investimentos em saneamento e gestão ambiental, o número de habitantes por município e o Índice FIRJAM de desenvolvimento municipal. Para verificar o relacionamento entre as variáveis utilizou-se a Análise de Componentes Principais. Os resultados mostraram que a maior arrecadação dos royalties, sejam do petróleo ou mineração, não tem como consequência direta maior desenvolvimento social ou ambiental. O que pode justificar tais resultados é a ausência de um dispositivo jurídico que condicione a aplicação dos recursos arrecadados às áreas em questão. Dessa forma, conclui-se que os possíveis impactos ambientais e sociais da exploração desses recursos não renováveis não estão sendo recompensados pelos royalties.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the correlation between environmental, economic and social variables with royalties collected in the main oil and mineral producing municipalities. The data used, disaggregated by city, between 2004 and 2010, were the municipalities’ total revenue, investments in sanitation and environmental management, the number of inhabitants per municipality and Index FIRJAM municipal development. The relationship between the variables was evaluated by the Principal Component Analysis. The results showed that the largest collection of royalties, whether oil or mining, does not directly affect greater social or environmental development. Results can be explained by the lack of a legal framework that conditions the application of funds raised to the concerned areas. Thus, we conclude that the possible environmental and social impacts of exploitation of these non-renewable resources are not being rewarded for royalties.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivos a disponibilização de equações hipsométricas, volumétricas e de predição do crescimento para a espécie Khaya ivorensis. Para o ajuste das equações de altura utilizaram-se dados de altura total e diâmetro a 1,3 metros de altura coletados em plantio localizado no município de Pirapora, Minas Gerais. Para as equações volumétricas, realizou-se a cubagem de 21 árvores em pé no mesmo plantio. As equações de crescimento foram estimadas com dados de volume por hectare de 10 parcelas, com idade entre 30 e 59 meses. O cálculo do volume foi realizado seguindo o método de Smalian. As equações ajustadas apresentaram estatísticas satisfatórias, porem inferiores à de outras culturas mais difundidas, como a do Eucalipto. Mas em face da escassez de informações técnicas sobre o Mogno-africano, este trabalho contribuiu de forma significativa para o estado da arte da referida planta.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to provide hipsometric, volumetric and growth prediction equations for Khaya ivorensis species. To adjust the height equations we used data with total height and diameter at 1.3 meters collected in the city of Pirapora. For volumetric equations, we performed the scaling of 21 standing trees in the same planting. The growth equations were estimated with volume per hectare of 10 parcels, with age between 30 and 59 months. The volume calculation was performed following the method of Smalian. The adjusted equations showed satisfactory statistics, however lower than the other most widespread crops such as Eucalyptus. But in the face of the lack of technical information about the African Mahogany, this work has contributed significantly to the state of the art of the mentioned plant.

RESUMO A secagem da madeira é necessária para sua utilização e o controle da umidade é fundamental durante este processo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi utilizar redes neurais artificiais para avaliar e monitorar a umidade da madeira durante a secagem. Amostras de 2 x 2 x 4 cm foram retiradas a 1,3 metros acima do solo na parte externa no sentido radial de sete materiais de dois anos e três de sete anos de Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis. Essas amostras foram saturadas e sua secagem avaliada até a umidade de equilíbrio, logo após, foram criadas as redes neurais artificiais. Os materiais com maior umidade inicial atingiram a umidade de equilíbrio mais rápido, devido a maior taxa de secagem. A densidade básica da madeira de todos os materiais foi inversamente proporcional no inicio e diretamente proporcional à umidade no final da secagem. A rede neural artificial baseada na densidade básica e nos dias de secagem apresentou alta precisão para avaliar e monitorar a umidade da madeira. Portanto, as redes neurais artificiais podem ser utilizadas para controle da umidade da madeira durante a secagem.

ABSTRACT Drying of wood is necessary for its use and moisture control is important during this process. The aim of this study was to use artificial neural networks to evaluate and monitor the wood moisture content during drying. Wood samples of 2 × 2 × 4 cm were taken at 1.3 m above the ground, outside of radial direction, from seven 2-year-old materials and three 7-year-old materials. These samples were saturated and drying was evaluated until the equilibrium moisture content, then, the artificial neural networks were created. The materials with higher initial moisture reached equilibrium moisture content faster due to its higher drying rate. The basic density of all wood materials was inversely proportional at the beginning and directly proportional to the moisture at the end of drying. All artificial neural networks used in this work showed high accuracy to estimate the moisture, however, the neural network based on the basic density and drying days was the best. Therefore, artificial neural networks can be used to control the moisture content of wood during drying.

RESUMO Utilizando dados da série temporal mensal de preços de carvão vegetal em Minas Gerais no período de janeiro de 2000 à setembro de 2014, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o uso do sistema neuro-fuzzy para modelagem e previsão de preços. Foram utilizados quatro estruturas de modelagem considerando diferentes defasagens da variável preço (1, 2, 3, 4 e 5 defasagens). A estrutura mais adequada para o sistema neuro-fuzzy foi escolhido com base nos valores de raiz quadrada do erro médio quadrático, erro médio absoluto, erro médio quadrático, erro médio percentual absoluto e máximo erro percentual absoluto para o período de previsão. Com os resultados encontrados, é possível concluir que um sistema neuro-fuzzy pode ser usado para prever corretamente os preços do carvão vegetal.

ABSTRACT Using a monthly time series of charcoal prices in Minas Gerais from January 2000 to September 2014, this study aimed to evaluate the use of neuro-fuzzy system to model the series and forecasting prices. We used four modeling structures for different prices lags (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 lags). The structure most appropriate for neuro-fuzzy system was chosen based on the root mean square error, mean absolute error, mean squared error, mean absolute percentage error and maximum absolute percentage error for the forecasted period. With the results found, it is possible to conclude that a neuro-fuzzy system can be used properly to predict the charcoal prices.

Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a seleção de árvores competidoras com base em uma parcela circular com raio de 6 m e diâmetro das árvores superior ou igual a 5 cm, no uso do fator de área basal igual a 1, de acordo com o método de Bitterlich, e na disputa por espaço e luz observados em campo. Para isso, fez-se a seleção dos fustes competidores ao redor de 24 árvores objeto, escolhidas em função de sua importância, no que concerne ao estoque de carbono e ao valor de seus produtos madeireiros e não madeireiros. Após as análises, observou-se, pelo teste L&O, que ambos os métodos avaliados apresentaram baixa correlação em uma classe de diâmetro. Isso indica que a seleção dos competidores precisa ser mais estudada.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the selection of competing trees based on a circular plot with a radius of 6 meters and diameter of trees equal or superior to 5 cm; in the use of a basal area factor equal to 1, according to the Bitterlich's method; and based on the competition for space and light observed in the field. For this, there was the selection of stem competitors of about 24 trees, chosen due to their importance in relation to the carbon stock and value of their wood and non-wood products. After analysis, it was observed by the L&O test that both the evaluated methods showed low correlation in a diameter class. This indicates that the selection of competing trees needs to be more studied.

In air drying of Eucalyptus urophylla and Corymbia citriodora logs for the production of charcoal it is necessary to be able to predict when logs have reached the required moisture content of ≤ 35%.This study is aimed to produce models using basic density and diameter to predict the moisture content of Eucalyptus urophylla and Corymbia citriodora logs after 30, 60 and 90 days drying. 1,2 m long logs were taken at three different heights from three C. citriodora trees and three trees each from two E. urophylla clones (VM4 and Mn463). The 27 debarked, end sealed logs were air dried under cover for 90 days during which the change in moisture content was monitored. The relationship between density and drying was analyzed by Pearson’s correlation coefficient and the models for predicting the moisture content based on the basic density and diameter were produced. The density and the drying showed a high correlation coefficient. The coefficient of determination of the models was above 0,89 with a standard error lower than 6%. The use of the density and diameter to estimate the wood moisture content simplifies the production of the models, which can be used for Eucalyptus and Corymbia genetic materials.
