The aim of the current study was the valorization of hesperidin, the dominant flavonoid in citrus processing waste, by microwave-assisted synthesis of hesperidin-Mg complex, improving its antioxidant activity and insecticidal potential. Here we show, for the first time, that microwave-assisted synthesis of [Mg(hesp)2(phen)]OAc (1) (hesp: hesperidin, phen: phenanthroline) improve the reaction rate and yield. The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments proved to be powerful tools for the identification of three isomers in metal complexes. Moreover, we explore the insecticidal potential of 1 and [Mg(phen)2(Isov)]OAc (2) (Isov : isovanillic acid) complexes against three insects. Complex 1 killed 80% of adults whitefly at 0.14 μmol L-1, and 2 76% at 0.36 μmol L-1. There was a total mortality of Spodoptera frugiperda with 2 at 0.39 μmol L-1, and 83% with 1 at 0.14 μmol L-1. Both have similar activity, and represent a novel group of insecticide for Bemisia tabaci and S. frugiperda; nevertheless, the benefits of both as Myzus persicae repellent require further evaluation.

ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on clinical and surgical practice, educational activities, health and lifestyle behavior of Brazilian urology residents. Materials and Methods: A web-based survey was sent to 468 Brazilian urology residents from postgraduate years (PGY) 3 to 5 to collect data on clinical practice and training after 4 months of COVID-19. We also assessed health-related and behavior changes, rate of infection by SARS-CoV-2, deployment to the front line of COVID-19, residents’ concerns, and access to personal protective equipment (PPE). Results: Massive reductions in elective and emergency patient consultations, diagnostic procedures and surgeries were reported across the country, affecting PGY 3 to 5 alike. Most in-person educational activities were abolished. The median damage to the urological training expected for 2020 was 6.0 [3.4 – 7.7], on a scale from 0 to 10, with senior residents estimating a greater damage (P< 0.001). Educational interventions developed included online case-based discussions, subspeciality conferences and lectures, and grand rounds. Most senior residents favored extending residency to compensate for training loss and most younger residents favored no additional training (p< 0.001). Modifications in health and lifestyle included weight gain (43.8%), reduced physical activity (68.6%), increased alcoholic intake (44.9%) and cigarette consumption (53.6%), worsening of sexual life (25.2%) and feelings of sadness or depression (48,2%). Almost half were summoned to work on the COVID-19 front-line and 24.4% had COVID-19. Most residents had inadequate training to deal with COVID-19 patients and most reported a shortage of PPE. Residents’ concerns included the risk of contaminating family members, being away from residency program, developing severe COVID-19 and overloading colleagues. Conclusions: COVID-19 had a massive impact in Brazilian urology residents´ training, health and lifestyle behavior, which may reflect what happened in other medical specialties. Studies should confirm these findings to help developing strategies to mitigate residents’ losses.

The methodology developed in this study through the acquisition of fingerprint chromatograms by liquid chromatography-diode array detector (LC-DAD), aided by principal component analysis, made it possible to assess, in a rational way, the chemical differences between six accessions of Lippia alba and to verify the influence of the method of extraction, the seasonality and the individuality of each accession on chemical composition of its extracts. Among all extracts analyzed against cancer cell lines, eight of them showed to be more promising against a human leukemia cell line (HL-60), displaying cell growth inhibition percentage ranging between 40.0 and 52.0%. In the inhibitory activity assays against acetylcholinesterase enzyme, all extracts showed weak inhibitory effect, with highlight only for six of them, which displayed inhibition ranging between 27.0 and 32.0%.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Polymer blends remain an important research topic in different areas, in spite of innumerous studies over the years. In particular, mixtures of polypropylene and polystyrene are among the most studied, mainly owing to their low cost and technological relevance. In this work, the students enrolled in the discipline Polymer Processing I (PG24) in the Materials Science Graduate Program (PGCIMAT-UFRGS) produced blends of polypropylene and polystyrene, where all polymer processing steps were performed during lab classes. Then, each student undertook a characterization procedure with a specific technique, which included samples preparation, the analysis itself and discussion of the results. Subsequently, the results were confronted in the classroom, where we sought the correlations. Finally, all students reviewed this article, including suggestions and criticisms. As expected, the mixture of polystyrene and polypropylene formed an immiscible blend. Furthermore, the processing affected the characteristics of the polymers, leading to a reduction in molecular weight, and as a result a drop in its physical properties. In the PP/PS mixtures, phase separation produced PS domains with micrometers in size, and low adhesion to the PP matrix, which explains the loss of mechanical properties.

The study of soil moisture is important in determining the resilience of ecosystems and their recovery, as well as in the modeling of water-vegetation-atmosphere relationship. Remote sensing is an important tool for the acquisition, mapping and monitoring soil moisture through the surface temperature and vegetation indices. For the soil moisture content assessment, several methods have been proposed, however its application is still limited. In this work the soil moisture index (SMI) was applied and modeled with the objectives: to establish and delineate areas with different levels of desertification through SMI mapping and to map the dynamic of border, as well as to verify possible relationships betweem SMI and soil water parameters. In the application of this model as input data was used: NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) and LST (land surface temperature). It was observed that SMI accessed by the average of the SMI derived by NDVI and LST can be used in the determination of soil surface degradation and in the production of maps showing different levels of this degradation. It was also verified, that there was no direct relationship between SMI and physical parameters of soil moisture content. Remote sensing showed to be an important tool in the evaluation of soil moisture indices in degraded areas and to delineate the border effect in this desertification nucleus.

The present study investigated mitochondrial adaptations and oxidative stress markers after four and eight weeks of running training in liver of mice. Twenty-one male mice (CF1, 30-35g) were distributed into the following groups (n=7): untrained (UT); trained - four weeks (T4); trained - eight weeks (T8). Forty-eight hours after the last training session the animals were killed by decapitation and livers were removed and stored at -70ºC. Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), complexes I, II, II-III and IV, protein carbonyls (PC), total thiol content and superoxide dismutase activity were measured. The results show that endurance training (8-wk) increases the SDH activity and complexes (I, II, III, IV), superoxide dismutase and total thiol content in liver when compared to untrained animals. Decrease in protein carbonylation in the respective group in relation to UT was also observed. It could be concluded that eight weeks of running training are necessary for mitochondrial respiratory chain enzyme activities increase and improvement in oxidative stress markers in liver of mice.

As famílias Euphorbiaceae, Mimosaceae, Apocynaceae e Caesalpinaceae apresentaram maiores VI, assim como as espécies Croton hemiargyreus, Aspidosperma pyrifolium, Mimosa hostilis, Caesalpinia pyramidalis e Jatropha mollissima.
The anthropic pressure on the Brazilian semi-arid biome of 'caatinga' leads to extreme degradation areas known as desertification nucleus. In the desertification nucleus of Seridó the anthropisms are characterized by burning of 'caatinga' vegetation, cotton crop in the past, pasture and native vegetation exploitation, which altered the floristic composition and the structure of the potential vegetation. The objective of this study was to identify the degree of degradation of 'caatinga' vegetation of Seridó by means of multivariate techniques involving the environmental, phytofisionomy, diversity of vegetation. The floristic and phytossociologic inventory were carried out in 16, by square - point method with the inclusion of plants with stem diameter at ground level ≥ 1 cm and height ≥ 1 m, totalizing 3472 plants, which were identified in 15 families and 31 species. The Euphorbiaceae, Mimosaceae, Apocynaceae and Caesalpinaceae family and Croton hemiargyreus, Aspidosperma pyrifolium, Mimosa hostilis, Caesalpinia pyramidalis, Jatropha mollissima species occurred higher VI. The results showed that degradation of 'caatinga' is associated with more favorable environmental conditions, that evidence antropic causes of degradation.

SUMMARY Biochemical and chemical partial characterization of Bauhinia forficata Link Seeds. Seeds of Bauhinia forficata species were submited to biochemical characterization concerning fatty acids analysis, protein fractionization, and hemaglutinanting activity. The seed elementary analysis showed a high protein and lipids contents with 21.24 % and 19.45 % respectively. The more abundant fatty acid was linoleic acid with 46.47 % of the lipidic fraction. With the exception of prolamins, the different proteic fractions (albumin, globulins, acid and basic glutelins) showed hemaglutinanting activity against rabbit red cells no treated and treated with proteolitic enzymes. The fraction acid glutelin showed the higher specific hemaglutinanting activity (1072.25 UH/mg P) against rabbit blood pre-treated with trypsin. Glutamin (16.20%) and Valin (11.07%) were the more abundant amino acids in the seeds. Therefore, B. forficata represent a possible optional source of food because exhibit a high energetic values.
