Abstract The use of whole fruits and vegetables, including the parts usually discarded during food processing, is an alternative to reduce the quantity of agro-industrial wastes. This study aimed to evaluate papaya seeds' nutritional and bioactive potential in two ripening stages. The seeds in the stages 0 and 5 of ripening were analyzed regarding their physicochemical composition, while the oil and the hydroethanolic extracts of the seeds were studied in respect of their fatty acid profile, total phenolic content, antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities. The seeds in both ripening stages show good nutritional quality, because they are sources of protein, fiber, and oil. The oil extracted from the seeds is majorly composed by oleic fatty acid (around 70%). The seeds extracts did not present antimicrobial activity against Salmonella enteritidies, Escherichia coli e Staphylococcus aureus. However, they presented high contents of total phenols (58.1 and 36.0 mg GAE⁄g dry extract for seeds in the ripening stages 0 and 5, respectively) and good antioxidant capacity, according to the FRAP and ABTS●+ assays. Papaya seeds provide nutrients and bioactive compounds and their use is a promising alternative to reduce the disposal of food wastes in the environment.

Abstract The Brazilian Practice Guidelines for Stroke Rehabilitation – Part II, developed by the Scientific Department of Neurological Rehabilitation of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology (Academia Brasileira de Neurologia, in Portuguese), focuses on specific rehabilitation techniques to aid recovery from impairment and disability after stroke. As in Part I, Part II is also based on recently available evidence from randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and other guidelines. Part II covers disorders of communication, dysphagia, postural control and balance, ataxias, spasticity, upper limb rehabilitation, gait, cognition, unilateral spatial neglect, sensory impairments, home rehabilitation, medication adherence, palliative care, cerebrovascular events related to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, the future of stroke rehabilitation, and stroke websites to support patients and caregivers. Our goal is to provide health professionals with more recent knowledge and recommendations for better rehabilitation care after stroke.

Resumo As Diretrizes Brasileiras de Reabilitação do Acidente Vascular Cerebral (AVC) - Parte II, desenvolvida pelo Departamento Científico de Reabilitação Neurológica da Academia Brasileira de Neurologia é voltada para intervenções específicas de técnicas de reabilitação de déficits neurológicos e incapacidades. Seguindo o mesmo modelo da Parte I, a Parte II também se baseia em estudos randomizados, revisões sistemáticas, metanálises e outras diretrizes sobre o mesmo tema. A segunda parte aborda os distúrbios da comunicação, disfagia, controle postural e equilíbrio, ataxias, espasticidade, reabilitação do membro superior, marcha, cognição, negligência espacial unilateral, déficits sensoriais, reabilitação domiciliar, aderênciaao usode medicamentos, cuidados paliativos,ofuturodareabilitação no AVC, e websites de orientação sobre AVC para pacientes e cuidadores. Nosso objetivo é fornecer aos profissionais envolvidos na reabilitação conhecimento atualizado e recomendações para um melhor cuidado no pós-AVC.

Abstract The treatment of epilepsy is complex and a matter of concern is the interchangeability among different formulations available for antiepileptic drugs. To evaluate the effects of interchangeability among carbamazepine formulations on patients with epilepsy. This is a prospective cohort study that included adult outpatients diagnosed with epilepsy and under pharmacological treatment with carbamazepine. Before switching the brand/manufacturer, the “Interchangeable Pharmaceutical Product in the Treatment of Epilepsies” questionnaire was applied. The questionnaires “Adverse Events Profile” and Quality of Life in Epilepsy-31, so as the plasma carbamazepine concentrations, were evaluated before and after the brand/ manufacturer switch. Physical-chemical tests aiming to assess tablets quality were performed in accordance with the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia 5th edition. The study population was composed by 14 patients (mean age: 44.6 years), with 10 of females. From those interviewed, 10 had no knowledge about the three antiepileptic drugs formulations available. The frequency of adverse event “problems with skin” incresead (p=0.023) and “upset stomach” decreased (p=0.041) after the changeover. The adverse events profile was associated with only two quality of life domains: “energy/fatigue” (p=0.048) and “total score” (p=0.018). Divergent results between generic and reference formulations were observed in purity-water test (reference: 1.96%, generic: 4.84%) and dissolution test, in which the generic formulation presented 66.27 to 85.77% of carbamazepine dissolved after the third level. Conclusions: Objective differences before and after the brand/manufacturer switch were not observed, in spite of patients’ perceptions. Despite that, more studies in the field are necessary, especially on the interchangeability among generic antiepileptics, in order to better elucidate switching consequences on patients’ life.

RESUMO Lafoensia pacari representa uma alternativa para controlar fitopatógenos e doenças do feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Objetivou-se investigar a composição química de extrato fenólico obtido de folhas de L. pacari e avaliar sua atividade inibitória in vitro e in vivo contra Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens p v. flaccumfaciens, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli, Xanthomonas fuscans subsp. fuscans, Xanthomonas sp., Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, Fusarium oxysporum e Macrophomina phaseolina. Foram investigados a triagem da suscetibilidade microbiana e o potencial de redução da severidade da antracnose e do crestamento bacteriano comum pelo extrato. Onze compostos fenólicos foram identificados, sendo oito descritos pela primeira vez em folhas de L. pacari: ácidos gentísico, cafeico, p-cumárico, protocatecuico e vanílico, luteolina, naringenina e quercetina. O extrato de L. pacari inibiu completamente o crescimento bacteriano na concentração de 0,62-1,25 %, bem como o crescimento micelial do isolado de C. lindemuthianum (BRM 007626) na concentração de 5 % (v/v). Em condições de casa-de-vegetação, o extrato resultou no controle do crestamento causado por X. axonopodis p v . phaseoli (BRM 25302) na cultivar de feijão Pérola e em baixa eficiência no controle da antracnose causada por C. lindemuthianum (BRM 007447) na cultivar IPA 7419.

ABSTRACT Lafoensia pacari represents an alternative to control phytopathogens and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) diseases. This study aimed to investigate the chemical composition of L. pacari phenolics-containing extract obtained from leaves and assess its in vitro and in vivo inhibitory activity against Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli, Xanthomonas fuscans subsp. fuscans, Xanthomonas sp., Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, Fusarium oxysporum and Macrophomina phaseolina. The microbial susceptibility screening and the extract’s potential to reduce the anthracnose severity and the common bacterial blight were examined. Eleven phenolic compounds were identified, eight of which were described for the first time in L. pacari leaves: gentisic, caffeic, p-coumaric, protocatechuic and vanillic acids, luteolin, naringenin and quercetin. The L. pacari extract completely inhibited bacterial growth at the concentration of 0.62-1.25 %, as well as the mycelial growth of the C. lindemuthianum (BRM 007626) isolate at the concentration of 5 % (v/v). Under greenhouse conditions, the extract led to the control of the common bacterial blight caused by X. axonopodis pv. phaseoli (BRM 25302) in the Pérola bean cultivar and to a low efficiency in the control of anthracnose caused by C. lindemuthianum (BRM 007447) in the IPA 7419 cultivar.

Abstract This work aimed to present aspects related to the use of ultrasound in fruit and vegetable processing, such as the functioning of the method, effects on food, applications, sensory aspects and consumer perception. Changes in eating habits and the search for well-being reflect the increased demand for natural foods, such as fruits and vegetables. These foods may undergo microbiological changes along the production chain, and it is necessary to adopt Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), even as handling and technological processes of conservation to ensure the quality of the final product. Ultrasound is an emerging technology applied in fruit and vegetable processing that is related to improvements in quality and preservation. The basic principle of ultrasound is acoustic cavitation, which involves the growth and collapse of bubbles during periods of rarefaction and compression, causing chemical, physical, and mechanical changes in food. These changes are associated with the inactivation of microorganisms, enzymes, as well as the removal of residues and improvements in the physical-chemical quality and accessibility of bioactive compounds. In addition, the application of this method can have good acceptability by consumers looking for more natural foods and that are submitted to processes that does not cause environment impact.

Resumo Este trabalho objetivou apresentar aspectos relacionados à utilização do ultrassom no processamento de frutas e hortaliças, como o funcionamento do método, os efeitos no alimento, as aplicações, os aspectos sensoriais e a percepção dos consumidores. As mudanças dos hábitos alimentares e a busca do bem-estar refletem no aumento da procura por alimentos naturais, como as frutas e as hortaliças. Estes alimentos podem sofrer alterações microbiológicas ao longo da cadeia produtiva, sendo necessária a aplicação de boas práticas agrícolas e de manipulação, e processos tecnológicos de conservação para a garantia da qualidade do produto. O ultrassom é uma tecnologia emergente aplicada no processamento de frutas e hortaliças que está relacionada a melhorias na qualidade e preservação. O princípio básico do ultrassom é a cavitação acústica, que envolve o crescimento e colapso de bolhas durante períodos de rarefação e compressão, causando alterações químicas, físicas e mecânicas no alimento. Essas alterações estão relacionadas à inativação de micro-organismos e de enzimas, à remoção de resíduos e às melhorias na qualidade físico-química, e à acessibilidade de compostos bioativos. Além disso, a aplicação deste método pode ter boa aceitabilidade pelos consumidores, que procuram alimentos mais naturais e submetidos a processos que não causem impacto ambiental.

RESUMO A seca é o fator ambiental que mais prejudica a produtividade das culturas. Alguns produtos químicos têm sido utilizados na agricultura para mitigar os danos causados por esse estresse nas plantas. Portanto, examinamos se a pulverização dos compostos sulfato de zinco (ZS), fosfito de potássio (FP) e doador de sulfeto de hidrogênio (H2S) - hidrossulfeto de sódio (NaHS) - mitigam os efeitos deletérios do déficit hídrico em plantas de girassol, analisando características fisiológicas e biométricas. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação sob delineamento de blocos ao acaso com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em esquema fatorial 4 x 2: [Fator A (aliviadores)] - pulverização de FP (0.5 L ha-1), ZS (3.2 kg ha-1), NaHS (1.2 g ha-1), e água; [Fator B (umidade do substrato, US)] - 100% (bem irrigado) e 30% (déficit hídrico, DH) da capacidade de campo. Nas condições de DH, os aliviadores levaram à manutenção de maiores valores de potencial hídrico (ΨW), menor teor de malonaldeído foliar (MDA) e aumento da atividade da enzima antioxidante peroxidase (POX), exceto para ZS. Entretanto, o potencial osmótico foliar, a concentração de prolina, as variáveis relacionadas às trocas gasosas, fluorescência da clorofila a e as características biométricas diferiram apenas em função do fator US. Os resultados de ΨW e MDA em plantas de girassol sob DH são indicativos da capacidade mitigadora do ZS, FP e H2S. Assim, a pulverização desses compostos em plantas de girassol mitiga os efeitos do DH, atuando especificamente em processos fisiológicos relacionados a respostas antioxidantes e na manutenção de água nos tecidos foliares.

ABSTRACT Drought is the most harmful environmental factor crop productivity. Some chemicals are used in agriculture to mitigate the damage from this stress on plants. Therefore, we examined whether the spraying of zinc sulfate (ZS), potassium phosphite (KPhi) and the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) would mitigate the deleterious effects of water deficit on sunflower plants by analyzing physiological and biometric characteristics. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse using a randomized block design with five replications. The treatments were arranged in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme: [Factor A (Alleviators)] - spraying of KPhi (0.5 L ha-1), ZS (3.2 kg ha-1), NaHS (1.2 g ha-1), and water; [Factor B (substrate humidity, SH)] - 100% (well irrigated) and 30% (water deficit, WD) of field capacity. Under WD conditions, alleviators led to the maintenance of higher values of water potential (ΨW), a lower content of leaf malonaldehyde (MDA), and increased activity of the antioxidant enzyme peroxidase (POX), except for ZS. However, leaf osmotic potential, proline concentration, variables related to gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence, and biometric characteristics differed only according to the SH factor. The results of ΨW and MDA for sunflower plants under WD are indicative of the mitigating capacity of ZS, KPhi, and H2S. Thus, the spraying of these compounds on sunflower plants mitigates the effects of WD, acting specifically in physiological processes related to antioxidant responses and in the maintenance of water in leaf tissues.

Abstract Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx is the sixth most common type of cancer in the world. During tumorigenesis, gene promoter hypermethylation is considered an important mechanism of transcription silencing of tumor suppressor genes, such as DAPK, MGMT and RUNX3. These genes participate in signaling pathways related to apoptosis, DNA repair and proliferation whose loss of expression is possibly associated with cancer development and progression. In order to investigate associations between hypermethylation and clinicopathological and prognostic parameters, promoter methylation was evaluated in 72 HPV negative oral and oropharyngeal tumors using methylation-specific PCR. Hypermethylation frequencies found for DAPK, MGMT and RUNX3 were 38.88%, 19.44% and 1.38% respectively. Patients with MGMT hypermethylation had a better 2-year overall survival compared to patients without methylation. Being MGMT a repair gene for alkylating agents, it could be a biomarker of treatment response for patients who are candidates for cisplatin chemotherapy, predicting drug resistance. In view of the considerable levels of hypermethylation in cancer cells and, for MGMT, its prognostic relevance, DAPK and MGMT show potential as epigenetic markers, in a way that additional studies may test its viability and efficacy in clinical management.

Abstract Background: To determine the burden of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) on patients' work productivity and health related quality of life (HRQoL), and examine the influence of several exposure variables; to analyze the progression of RA over 1 year and its impact on work productivity and HRQoL. Methods: International multicenter prospective survey including patients in 18 centers in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico with diagnosis of RA and aged between 21-55 years. The following standard questionnaires were completed at baseline and throughout a 1-year follow-up: WPAI:RA, WALS, WLQ-25, EQ-5D-3 L and SF-36. Clinical and demographic variables were also collected through interview. Results: The study enrolled 290 patients on baseline visit. Overall mean scores at baseline visit were: WPAI:RA (presenteeism) = 29.5% (SD = 28.8%); WPAI:RA (absenteeism) = 9.0% (SD = 23.2%); WPAI:RA (absenteeism and presenteeism) = 8.6% (SD = 22.6%); WALS = 9.0 (SD = 6.1); WLQ-25 = 7.0% (SD = 5.1%); SF-36 Physical Scale = 39.1 (SD = 10.3) and Mental Scale = 45.4 (SD = 11.3); EQ-5D-3 L VAS = 69.8 (SD = 20.4) and EQ-5D-3 L index = 0.67 (SD = 0.23). Higher educational levels were associated with better results in WLQ-25, while previous orthopedic surgeries reduced absenteeism results of WPAI:RA and work limitations in WLQ-25. Higher disease duration was associated with decreased HRQoL. Intensification of disease activity was associated with decreased work productivity and HRQoL, except in WLQ-25. In the longitudinal analysis, worsening in disease activity was associated with a decrease in both work productivity and HRQoL. Conclusions: RA patients are dealing with workplace disabilities and limitations and loss in HRQoL, and multiple factors seems to be associated with this. Worsening of disease activity further decreased work productivity and HRQoL, stressing the importance of disease tight control.

Abstract Microalgae are aquatic unicellular microorganisms that can be found both in freshwater and marine systems; are capable of photosynthesis; and can grow as individual cells or associated in chains or small colonies. Microalgae cultivation has gained large momentum among researchers in the past decades due to their ability to produce value metabolites, remarkable photosynthetic efficiency, and versatile nature. The wide technological potential, and thus increasing amount of scattered knowledge, may become the very first barrier that a post graduating student, or any non-specialist reader, will face when introduced to the subject. Resumo Fundamento: Estudos observacionais têm destacado uma associação entre níveis de ácido úrico sérico (AUS) e fatores de risco cardiovascular. Apesar do crescente conjunto de evidências, vários estudos foram realizados em indivíduos mais velhos ou em portadores de doenças passíveis de influenciar os níveis de AUS e marcadores de risco cardiometabólico. Objetivo: Avaliar a relação do AUS com adiposidade corporal, perfil metabólico, estresse oxidativo, biomarcadores de inflamação, pressão arterial e função endotelial em adultos jovens e de meia-idade saudáveis. Métodos: 149 adultos, brasileiros, com idades entre 20 e 55 anos, de ambos os sexos, foram submetidos a avaliação de adiposidade corporal, AUS, glicose e insulina de jejum, perfil lipídico, malondialdeído (MDA), proteína C-reativa ultra-sensível (PCR-us), adiponectina, pressão arterial e função endotelial. A função endotelial foi avaliada pelo índice de hiperemia reativa (RHI) derivado do método de tonometria arterial periférica. Os participantes foram divididos em dois grupos de acordo com os níveis de AUS: grupo de controle (GC; n = 130; homens ≤ 7 mg/dL, mulheres ≤ 6mg/dL) e grupo de hiperuricemia (GH; n = 19; homens > 7mg/dL, mulheres > 6mg/dL). Valor de p < 0,05 foi considerado estatisticamente significativo. Resultados: Após ajuste para fatores de confundimento, os participantes do GH comparados aos do GC apresentaram índice de massa corporal (IMC) mais alto: 34,15 (33,36-37,19) vs. 31,80 (26,26-34,42) kg/m2, p = 0,008, MDA mais alto: 4,67(4,03-5,30) vs. 3,53(3,10-4,07) ng/mL, p < 0,0001 e RHI mais baixo: 1,68 ± 0,30 vs. 2,05 ± 0,46, p = 0,03. Na análise de correlação ajustada para fatores de confundimento, o AUS se associou positivamente (p < 0,05) com IMC, circunferência da cintura, LDL colesterol, triglicérides e MDA, e se associou negativamente (p < 0,05) com HDL colesterol, adiponectina e RHI. Conclusões: Este estudo sugere que, em adultos jovens e de meia-idade saudáveis, níveis mais altos de AUS estão associados a maior adiposidade corporal, fenótipo inflamatório e de lipídios desfavorável, maior estresse oxidativo e função endotelial comprometida.

Abstract Background: Observational studies have highlighted an association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and cardiovascular risk factors. Despite the growing body of evidences, several studies were conducted in older individuals or in carriers of diseases susceptible to affect SUA levels and cardiometabolic risk markers. Objective: To evaluate the relationship of SUA with body adiposity, metabolic profile, oxidative stress, inflammatory biomarkers, blood pressure and endothelial function in healthy young and middle-aged adults. Methods: 149 Brazilian adults aged 20-55 years, both sexes, underwent evaluation of body adiposity, SUA, fasting glucose and insulin, lipid profile, malondialdehyde (MDA), high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), adiponectin, blood pressure and endothelial function. Endothelial function was assessed by the reactive hyperemia index (RHI) derived from peripheral arterial tonometry method. Participants were allocated in two groups according to SUA levels: control group (CG; n = 130; men ≤ 7 mg/dL, women ≤ 6 mg/dL) and hyperuricemia group (HG; n = 19; men > 7 mg/dL, women > 6 mg/dL). A P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: After adjustment for confounders, participants in HG compared with those in CG displayed higher body mass index (BMI): 34.15(33.36-37.19) vs.31.80 (26.26-34.42) kg/m2,p = 0.008, higher MDA: 4.67(4.03-5.30) vs. 3.53(3.10-4.07) ng/mL, p < 0.0001 and lower RHI: 1.68 ± 0.30 vs. 2.05 ± 0.46, p = 0.03). In correlation analysis adjusted for confounders, SUA was positively associated (p < 0.05) with BMI, waist circumference, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and MDA, and negatively associated (p < 0.05) with HDL-cholesterol, adiponectin and RHI. Conclusions: This study suggests that in healthy young and middle-aged adults higher SUA levels are associated with higher body adiposity, unfavorable lipid and inflammatory phenotype, higher oxidative stress and impaired endothelial function.

RESUMO O trabalho teve como objetivos realizar a classificação botânica e estimar a diversidade genética em duas gerações endogâmicas sequenciais (progênies S1 e S2) de acessos de melão da agricultura familiar do Maranhão, visando gerar informações úteis para o melhoramento do melão comercial. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos de campo em blocos casualizados completos, com quatro repetições e 15 acessos em 2013 e, três repetições e 25 subacessos em 2014. Para avaliação dos acessos foram aplicados descritores quantitativos e qualitativos de flor e fruto, além de uma documentação fotográfica sistematizada dos frutos com análise visual, comparando os frutos das gerações S1 e S2. Foram obtidas as matrizes de distância nos dois tipos de descritores e se fez a análise conjunta e em seguida realizou-se o agrupamento pelo método UPGMA. Verificou-se que nos acessos analisados, existe uma grande diversidade genética, pois foram encontradas progênies de melão da subespécie agrestis e suas variedades botânicas momordica e conomom e da subespécie melo com as variedades botânicas cantalupensis e chandalak. A análise de divergência na geração S1 mostrou a formação de três grupos e na geração S2 foram formados quatro agrupamentos, entretanto os grupos não foram formados nem por subespécie nem por variedade botânica. Assim, além de se ter encontrado uma grande diversidade genética entre e dentro dos acessos de melão da agricultura familiar maranhense, é provável que tenha ocorrido grande introgressão de alelos das subespécies e das diferentes variedades botânicas na área dos agricultores devido ao sistema reprodutivo da espécie a ao manejo de sementes.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to perform botanical identification and to estimate genetic diversity in two sequential inbred generations (progenies S1 and S2) of melon accessions from traditional agriculture in the state of Maranhão, in order to generate useful information for commercial melon breeding. Two field experiments were carried out in a completely randomized block, using four replicates of 15 accessions from a first selfing cycle in 2013, and three replicates of 25 subaccessions (generation S2) in 2014. Flower and fruit descriptors were measured to obtain quantitative and qualitative data, in addition to a systematized photographic documentation of fruit for visually comparing the progenies S1 and S2. Distance matrices for quantitative and qualitative data were obtained and used to perform a joint analysis and UPGMA method. Large genetic diversity was found in the accessions analysed, since the presence of melon progenies was observed in the Cucumis melo ssp. agrestis, with its botanical varieties momordica and conomom, and of the Cucumis melo ssp. melo, with the botanical varieties cantalupensis and chandalak. Divergence analysis showed the formation of three groups in generation S1 and four groups in S2. However, the groups were not separated either by subspecies or by botanical variety. Thus, in addition to the large genetic diversity among and within melon accessions from family farming in the state of Maranhão, the progenies presented a large introgression of traits of the different subspecies and their botanical varieties due to the reproductive system and seed management of these species.

RESUMO CONTEXTO A população idosa enfrenta dificuldades diversas em consequência do processo de envelhecimento. Conceituar e avaliar sua qualidade de vida é um desafio, sendo difícil caracterizar o impacto que provoca em atividades diárias e na capacidade funcional. O acidente vascular encefálico é uma das doenças neurológicas mais incapacitantes, constituindo-se um problema de saúde pública. Como consequência agravante, tem-se a disfagia, desordem que compromete a progressão do alimento da boca ao estômago, acarretando complicações clínicas para o indivíduo. OBJETIVO Caracterizar a qualidade de vida em deglutição de idosos acometidos por acidente vascular encefálico. MÉTODOS Estudo transversal realizado no Hospital Universitário Lauro Wanderley, em que participaram 35 idosos com acidente vascular encefálico, sendo 19 mulheres e 16 homens, com idade entre 60 e 90 anos, que autorreferiram quadro clínico geral satisfatório. Foi aplicado o protocolo Quality of Life Swallowing. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente, por meio dos testes ANOVA, Correlação de Spearman, teste t, com nível de significância P≤0,005. RESULTADOS A idade média foi 69,5 anos; quanto aos escores obtidos pelos 35 participantes nos 11 domínios do protocolo, observou-se uma variação na pontuação média, indicando impacto grave a moderado na qualidade de vida relacionada à deglutição autorreferida (31,8% a 59,5%); o domínio que mais interferiu foi o de duração de alimentação (31,8%). CONCLUSÃO Idosos acometidos por um acidente vascular encefálico que apresente a disfagia possui escores baixos na qualidade de vida relacionada à deglutição.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND The elderly population faces many difficulties as a result of the aging process. Conceptualize and evaluate their life quality is a challenge, being hard to characterize the impact on daily activities and on functional capacity. The stroke is one of the most disabling neurological diseases, becoming a public health problem. As an aggravating result, there is dysphagia, a disorder that compromises the progression of the food from the mouth to the stomach, causing clinical complications to the individual. OBJECTIVE Characterize the life quality of the elderly swallowing affected by stroke. METHODS Cross-sectional study conducted at the University Hospital, attended by 35 elderly with stroke, being 19 women and 16 men, with age between 60 and 90 years old, that self-reported satisfactory overall clinical picture. It was applied the Quality of Life Swallowing protocol. The data were statistically analyzed, by means of ANOVA tests, Spearman correlation, t test, with significance level of 5%. RESULTS The mean age was 69.5 years; as for the scores obtained by the 35 participants in the 11 domains of the protocol, it was observed a change in score indicating severe to moderate impact in quality of life related to self-reported swallowing (31.8% to 59.5%); the domain that most interfered was the feeding time (31.8%). CONCLUSION Elderly affected by stroke that present dysphagia has low scores in quality of life related to swallowing.

RESUMO Objetivo Descrever o resultado da aplicação do relacionamento terapêutico a pessoas com transtorno mental comum. Método Estudo quantitativo, descritivo, tipo antes e depois, conduzido com 112 prontuários acessados de um projeto de extensão em saúde mental na Atenção Primária à Saúde em Santo André, São Paulo. Utilizou-se o Self-Reporting Questionnaire para rastreio. Dados coletados em outubro de 2014 e analisados por meio de medidas de frequência simples. Resultados O escore de entrada variou entre 07 e 18 pontos, e, quanto maior, mais sessões de relacionamento foram necessárias. Ao final do processo do relacionamento, 55% da amostra apresentaram escore negativado e 45% passaram à pontuação ≤3. Conclusão O relacionamento terapêutico como cuidado em enfermagem em saúde mental transcende ao espaço da especialidade. A reavaliação contínua e o redirecionamento do processo conduziram os usuários a ampliar a visão sobre os desencadeadores de sofrimento, construir estratégias de enfrentamento e exercitar mudanças no cotidiano.

ABSTRACT Objective To report the results from applying a therapeutic relationship to people with common mental disorder. Method Quantitative, descriptive, before and after study, conducted with 112 records accessed from an extension project in mental health in primary health care in Santo André, São Paulo. Screening was performed using a Self-Reporting Questionnaire. Data was collected in October 2014 and analyzed using simple frequency measures. Results The entry score ranged between 7 and18 points, and the higher the frequency, the more relationship sessions were necessary. At the end of the relationship process, 55% had a negative score and 45% passed the score ≤3. Conclusion Therapeutic relationship as nursing care in mental health transcends the area of specialty. Continuous review and process redirecting led users to enlarge their view of the suffering triggers, build coping strategies and exercise changes in daily life.

RESUMEN Objetivo Describir el resultado de aplicar la relación terapéutica para personas con trastorno mental común. Método Estudio cuantitativo, descriptivo tipo antes y después, llevó a cabo con 112 registros a los que se accede desde un proyecto de extensión de la salud mental en la atención primaria de salud en Santo André, Sao Paulo. Se utiliza el Self-Reporting Questionnaire de divulgación para el rastreo. Los datos recogidos en octubre de 2014 y se analizaron utilizando medidas de frecuencia simples. Resultados La puntuación de entrada osciló entre 7 y 18 puntos y cuanto más alta la relación más sesiones eran necesarias. Al final del proceso de la relación 55% tenían puntuación negativa y el 45% apasó la puntuación ≤3. Conclusión La relación terapéutica como cuidados de enfermería en salud mental trasciende el ámbito de la especialidad. La revisión continua y y el redireccionamiento del proceso condujeron a los usuarios a ampliar la visión de los factores desencadenantes de sufrimiento, construir estrategias de enfrentamiento y ejercitar cambios en el cotidiano.

ABSTRACT Euphorbia umbellata (Pax) Bruyns is an easily cultivated shrub, with occurrence in the tropical regions of the American and African continents. Chemical studies have revealed that the latex of this plant is rich in terpene compounds, which are highly toxic to snails Biomphalaria glabrata (Basommatophora: Planorbidae). The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition and molluscicidal activity of the latex produced by E. umbellata, as well as the safety of its application in aquatic environments. The concentration of latex that killed 90% of the exposed snails after 24 h exposure (LC90) was 3.69 mg/L. Toxicity bioassays using Danio rerio (zebrafish) revealed that these animals were less susceptible to latex than planorbids. However, it is important to perform other toxicity tests to ensure the feasibility of using latex to control populations of mollusks that contribute to schistosomiasis transmission. A phytochemical screening performed with the E. umbellata latex identified the triterpenoid and coumarin class. Further studies are warranted to isolate, identify, and test the active compounds of E. umbellata latex in B. glabrata.
