ABSTRACT Objectives: To analyze and compare intrinsic and extrinsic factors that cause falls among women receiving treatment for osteoporosis. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study of women ≥50 years receiving treatment for osteoporosis. Participants filled out questionnaires (demographic characteristics), and researchers took anthropometric measurements of bone mineral density, handgrip strength (HGS), ankle range of motion (ROM), and gait speed (GS). We also evaluated the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT), Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test (SST), and Falls Efficacy Scale–International (FES-I) and investigated the extrinsic factors for falls. Results: We included 144 participants (71.6 [8.3 years]), who reported 133 falls. We classified participants into a non-faller group (NFG; 0 falls, n = 71, 49.5%), a faller group (FG; 1 fall, n = 42, 28.9%), and a recurrent-faller group (RFG; more than 1 fall, n = 31, 21.5%). Most patients had an increased risk of falling according to the TUGT, SST, reduced ankle ROM, and GS (P < .005 for all). FES-I was associated with sporadic and recurrent falls. For the multivariate analysis, the number of falls was influenced by the presence of ramps (RR 0.48, 95% CI, 0.26-0.87, P = .015), uneven surfaces (RR 1.6, 95% CI. 1.05-2.43, P = .028), and antislippery adhesive on stairs (RR 2.75, 95% CI, 1.77-4.28, P < .001). Conclusion: Patients receiving treatment for osteoporosis are influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors that cause falls. Lower-limb strength and power-discriminated participants at a higher risk of falls, but extrinsic factors varied. Only uneven floors and antislippery adhesives on stairs were associated with increased frequency of falls.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the reproductive effects of adding monosodium glutamate (MSG) to the diet of goats. Eleven adult goats received synchronized estrus and follicular waves using three prostaglandin analog injections every seven days. Goats allocated to individual pens received 1 g/kg BW of MSG in their diet for 23 days (MOGLU group, n = 6), whereas the control group (n = 5) maintained the base diet. The supplemented animals showed an increase in dry matter intake (P < 0.0001) and a reduction in heart rate (P < 0.05), respiratory rate, and ruminal movement (P < 0.001). Surface and rectal temperatures were higher in the MOGLU group, (P < 0.0001) with a significant increase in the afternoon. There was an increase (P < 0.05) in the frequency of behaviors related to rumination, defecation, and urination in the MOGLU group, and a reduction in behaviors associated with stress (P < 0.05). No differences were observed in the plasma levels of proteins, albumin, urea, cholesterol, or triglycerides. Glucose levels were lower (P < 0.05) in the MOGLU group, which also showed increased glutathione peroxide levels during the induction of ovulation. Supplemented animals recorded a larger number (P < 0.05) of follicles throughout the experimental period and higher intraovarian blood perfusion (P < 0.05) during ovulation induction. We conclude that MSG exerts a positive effect on the reproductive response in goats and therefore represents an effective nutritional supplement.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the effect of a short glutamate supply on the ovarian response in goats with low body condition scores. Twenty-one goats had their estrus and follicular waves synchronized using three injections of prostaglandin analog at seven-day intervals. Goats were allocated to groups receiving 10 mg/kg LW (iv) of glutamate administered in a single dose (group LBCG1, n = 7) or in two doses five days apart (group LBCG2, n = 7). The control group (LBC; n = 7) received saline solution. Glutamate treatment did not affect glucose, cholesterol, or glutathione peroxidase levels, body weight, or adipose deposits. During the experimental period, the LBCG2 group showed a higher (P < 0.05) number of follicles (> 3 mm) and an increase in follicle diameter (P < 0.05). Glutamate supply improved (P < 0.05) the intraovarian Doppler blood area size in the LBCG groups, and the second dose in LBCG2 also induced a higher (P < 0.05) systolic and diastolic peak of the ovary artery. After ovulation induction, LBCG2 exhibited a high (P < 0.05) volume of the corpus luteum and vascularized area. We concluded that the supply of two doses of glutamate five days apart was efficient in ovarian stimulation in goats with a low body condition.

Resumo Introdução: A deformidade dentofacial (DDF) e o modo respiratório podem alterar a postura de cabeça. Entretanto as modificações da postura de cabeça após a cirurgia ortognática são controversas e não foram encontrados estudos que apontassem relação entre a postura de cabeça e o modo respiratório em adultos com DDF. Objetivo: Identificar as principais alterações na postura de cabeça em adultos jovens com DDF, verificar se a cirurgia ortognática altera o modo respiratório e a postura de cabeça e se o modo respiratório está associado com a postura de cabeça. Métodos: Foram avaliados 25 jovens adultos, os quais foram divididos no grupo deformidade dentofacial (DDF; n = 15; x̅ = 28 anos) e grupo controle com harmonia dentofacial (GC; n = 10; equilibrados por gênero e idade com o grupo de estudo). O modo respiratório foi analisado de acordo com o protocolo de avaliação miofuncional orofacial e a postura de cabeça foi avaliada por meio da biofotogrametria. Para o grupo DDF, as avaliações foram realizadas antes e após a cirurgia ortognática (pré e pós-DDF). Resultados: Para o grupo DDF, o modo respiratório se modificou após a cirurgia ortognática (p = 0,003), porém com diferença em relação ao GC (p = 0,027). Não houve modificação na postura de cabeça após a cirurgia ortognática, porém observou-se diferença significativa entre os grupos pós-DDF e GC para a inclinação de cabeça (p = 0,017). Não observou-se relação entre o modo respiratório e a postura de cabeça (p > 0,05). Conclusão: Após a cirurgia ortognática, notou-se melhora espontânea da respiração na amostra estudada. Não foi possível verificar modificações na postura de cabeça e associação entre modo respiratório e postura de cabeça.

Abstract Introduction: Dentofacial deformity (DFD) and the breathing mode can change the head posture. However, head posture changes after orthognathic surgery are controversial, and no studies were found on the relationship between the head posture and breathing mode in adults with DFD. Objective: To identify the main head posture changes in young adults affected by DFD, to verify if orthognathic surgery modifies the breathing mode and head posture, and if the breathing mode is associated with the head posture. Methods: Twenty-five young adults were assessed and divided in dentofacial deformity group (DFD; n = 15; x̅ = 28 years) and control group with dentofacial harmony (CG; n = 10; balanced by gender and age with the study group). Breathing mode was evaluated according to the orofacial myofunctional evaluation protocol, and biophotogrammetry was used in the head posture analyses. For the DFD group, the evaluations were performed pre and post the orthognathic surgery (pre- and post-DFD). Results: For the DFD group, the breathing mode modified after orthognathic surgery (p = 0.003), but with difference from GC (p = 0.027). No changes were found in head posture after orthognathic surgery, but significant difference was seen between post-DFD and GC for head inclination (p = 0.017). No relationship was observed between breathing mode and head posture (p > 0.05). Conclusion: After orthognathic surgery, a spontaneous improvement of breathing was seen in the sample. It was not possible to verify changes in head posture and association with breathing mode and head posture.

RESUMO A capacidade de fornecimento de nitrogênio (N) para o feijoeiro por meio de fixação biológica ainda é questionada por agricultores. Objetivou-se investigar a nodulação, crescimento e produção de cultivares de feijão comum em condições de campo, submetidas à reinoculação de Rhizobium tropici em cobertura aplicado em diferentes doses, em mistura ou não com Azospirillum brasilense. Empregou-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2 x 4 x 2 + 2, com quatro repetições, sendo duas cultivares (BRS-Estilo e BRS-Esteio) reinoculadas com quatro doses de R. trocipi em cobertura (0; 1; 2; e 4 vezes a dose referência), em mistura ou não com Azospirillum em co-inoculação. Como tratamentos adicionais, utilizou-se adubação nitrogenada (20 e 50 kg ha-1 na base e em cobertura, respectivamente) para ambas as cultivares. No estádio R6, foram avaliadas as características de nodulação (número de nódulos ativos e massa seca de nódulos) e morfológicas das plantas (comprimento e peso seco de raiz, altura de planta, peso seco da parte aérea e teor de N), e, na colheita, o número de vagens por planta, número de grãos por vagem, peso médio de 100 grãos e rendimento de grãos. A reinoculação em cobertura de R. tropici com A. brasilense realizada no estádio V4 infuenciou no processo de nodulação e características agronômicas do feijoeiro. Quando realizada em complementação à inoculação nas sementes, pode substituir totalmente o fornecimento de N mineral na cultura, permitindo a obtenção de elevados patamares de rendimento.

ABSTRACT The nitrogen (N) supplying capacity of common bean plants through biological fixation is still questioned by farmers. This study aimed to investigate the nodulation, growth and production of common bean cultivars under field conditions, when subjected to topdressing Rhizobium tropici reinoculation applied at different rates, combined or not with Azospirillum brasilense. A randomized blocks design was used, in a 2 × 4 × 2 + 2 factorial arrangement, with four replications. The treatments consisted of two common bean cultivars (BRS-Estilo and BRS-Esteio) reinoculated with four R. tropici rates (0-, 1-, 2- and 4-fold the reference rate), combined or not with A. brasilense in co-inoculation. The additional treatments consisted of nitrogen fertilizer applications (20 and 50 kg ha-1 at planting and as topdressing, respectively) for both cultivars. The variables evaluated at the R6 stage were nodulation (number of active nodules and nodule dry weight) and morphological plant characteristics (root length and dry weight, plant height, shoot dry weight and N content), while, at harvest, the number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, 100-grain average weight and grain yield were evaluated. The topdressing reinoculation of R. tropici combined with A. brasilense at the V4 stage affected the nodulation process and agronomic characteristics of the common bean plants. When performed in addition to seed inoculation, it may totally replace the supply of mineral N in the crop, allowing the achievement of high yield levels.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between oral health status and its impact on quality of life, and to suggest dental management strategies in patients undergoing antineoplastic therapy for onco-hematological diseases. A retrospective study including 33 individuals (age 9-79 yr) was conducted. It was observed that the dimensions related to physical pain, psychological discomfort, and social incapacity had statistically significant values. The most frequently performed dental treatments were periodontal treatment (45.45 %), dental restoration (36.36 %), tooth extractio n (33.33 %), and endodontic treatment (24.24 %). Thus, poor oral health directly affects the quality of life. Dental management should consider the aspects of the disease and antineoplastic treatment while aiming for safe and effective dental care.

RESUMEN: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la relación entre el estado de salud oral y su impacto en la calidad de vida, y sugerir estrategias de manejo odontológico en pacientes sometidos a terapia anti-neoplásica por enfermedades onco-hematológicas. Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo que incluyó a 33 personas (de 9 a 79 años de edad). Se observó que las dimensiones relacionadas con dolor físico, malestar psicológico e incapacidad social tuvieron valores estadísticamente significativos. Los tratamientos dentales realizados con mayor frecuencia fueron el tratamiento periodontal (45,45 %), la restauración dental (36,36 %), la extracción dentaria (33,33 %) y el tratamiento endodóntico (24,24 %). Así, la mala salud oral afecta directamente la calidad de vida. El tratamiento dental debe tener en cuenta los aspectos de la enfermedad y el tratamiento antineoplásico mientras se busca una atención dental segura y eficaz.

Resumo Esta pesquisa busca responder se a Lei n. 17.985/2013, que regulamenta a pesca no Estado de Goiás, está garantindo que o turismo de pesca seja feito de maneira sustentável. A pesquisa foi realizada na comunidade Itacaiu, às margens do Rio Araguaia. Foi verificado que a região de estudo vem sofrendo com a pesca predatória devido ao conhecimento limitado dos pescadores sobre a Lei e devido à falta de fiscalização governamental. Peixes fora de medida e espécies protegidas são capturados, transportados e consumidos ilegalmente, comprometendo o desenvolvimento local sustentável.

Abstract This study aims to answer whether the Law n. 17.985/2013, which regulates fishing in the Brazilian State of Goiás, ensures that fishing tourism is carried out in a sustainable manner. Field research was carried out in the Itacaiu community on the banks of the Araguaia River. Results show that the study area has been suffering from predatory fishing due to fishermen’s limited knowledge about the Law and the lack of law enforcement. Out-of-measure fish and protected species are caught, transported, and consumed illegally, jeopardizing sustainable local development.

Resumen Esta investigación busca responder si la Ley n. 17.985/2013, que regula la pesca en el Estado de Goiás, está garantizando que el turismo pesquero sea realizado de manera sostenible. La investigación se llevó a cabo en la comunidad ribereña Itacaiu, a orillas del Río Araguaia. Se verificó que la región de estudio viene sufriendo con la sobrepesca debido al limitado conocimiento de la Ley por parte de los pescadores y debido a la falta de inspección gubernamental. Los peces fuera de medida y las especies protegidas son capturados, transportados y consumidos ilegalmente, comprometiendo el desarrollo local sostenible.

ABSTRACT Chromium contamination in soils affects plant growth and this metal can accumulate in plants tissues. In addition, Cr can affect soil microbial biomass and activity. On the other hand, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can protect plants against metals and, at the same time, promote plant growth and could alleviate adverse effects on microbial biomass. This study evaluated five PGPR on maize growth, Cr accumulation and soil microbial biomass in a Cr-contaminated soil. Five PGPR (LCC04, LCC41, LCC69, LCC81 and IPA403), isolated from soil under permanent application of composted tannery sludge and contaminated with Cr, were inoculated in maize plants grown in soils with (+Cr) and without (–Cr) Cr. In Cr-contaminated soil, LCC41 promoted the highest growth of maize, while LCC04 contributed with the highest N accumulation. The shoots of maize accumulated less Cr with LCC81, while LCC41 contributed to the highest Cr accumulation in roots. The translocation of Cr was highest with IPA403, while LCC81 contributed to reduce Cr translocation. In conclusion, LCC41 and LCC81 could be effective as PGPR inoculants to promote plant growth and reduce Cr accumulation in maize, respectively, in Cr contaminated soil.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as condições higiênico-sanitárias e o perfil da comunidade microbiana dos utensílios e das mesas de um serviço de alimentação localizado no município do Rio de Janeiro. A caracterização do processo de higienização dos utensílios (pratos, bandejas e talheres) e das mesas foi realizada por observação sistemática. Verificou-se que os utensílios eram lavados em máquina de lavar e as mesas, manualmente. Após a higienização, os utensílios apresentavam umidade e resíduos de alimentos. Pelo método dependente de cultivo, foram analisadas 126 amostras higienizadas (utensílios: n=90 e mesas: n=36). Pesquisaram-se bactérias mesófilas, coliformes, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus e fungos. Das amostras analisadas, 100% dos utensílios e 80% das mesas apresentaram contagens microbianas superiores ao recomendado na literatura, estando em condições higiênico-sanitárias inadequadas. E. coli foi isolada nos utensílios e S. aureus, nas mesas. Pelos métodos independentes de cultivo (PCR-DGGE e sequenciamento da subunidade 16S do rRNA), foram analisadas 36 amostras (utensílios: n=27 e mesas: n=9). Klebsiella sp. e Acinetobacter sp. Foram detectadas em todas as amostras, Citrobacter sp. sobre as mesas e Aeromonas hydrophila, nos talheres. Houve falha no processo de higienização, que foi confirmada pelas análises realizadas, que evidenciaram a presença de microrganismos indicadores e patogênicos, que podem causar a perda da qualidade das refeições, assim como danos à saúde dos comensais. Desta forma, é necessário adequar o processo de higienização, a fim de minimizar o risco de contaminação e o surto de doenças transmitidas por alimentos (DTA).

Abstract The objective of the study was to evaluate the hygienic-sanitary conditions and the microbial community profile of tables and tableware of a food service located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The characterization of the sanitation process of the tableware (plates, trays and cutlery) and the tables was carried out by systematic observation. The tableware were washed in washing machine and the tables, cleaned by hand. After this process, the tableware presented moisture and food residues. For the culture-dependent method, 126 sanitized samples (tableware: n = 90 and tables: n = 36) were analyzed. Mesophilic bacteria, coliforms, fungi, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were investigated. 100% of the sampled tableware and 80% of the sampled tables presented microbial counts higher than recommended in literature. The surfaces were in inadequate hygienic-sanitary conditions. E. coli was isolated in the tableware and S. aureus in the tables. By independent culture methods (PCR-DGGE and 16S rRNA sequencing), 36 samples (tableware: n = 27 and tables: n = 9) were analyzed. Klebsiella sp. and Acinetobacter sp. were detected in all samples, Citrobacter sp. was found on the tables and Aeromonas hydrophila in the cutlery. Results showed that the analyzed surfaces had indicative and pathogenic microorganisms, which can cause loss of quality in meals, as well as damages to the consumers’ health. Therefore, it is necessary to adapt the tableware and tables hygiene process in order to minimize the risk of contamination and food disease outbreaks.

RESUMO: O biocarvão tem sido usado mundialmente como um eficiente insumo agrícola devido à sua interação benéfica com as partículas e os nutrientes do solo. Contudo, seu efeito na disponibilidade de nutrientes como N e P em solos tropicais tem sido pouco investigado. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes tipos e doses de biocarvão na concentração e na eficiência de absorção de N e P em plantas de mostarda indiana (Brassica juncea L.) cultivadas em solo contaminado com cobre, em três ciclos sucessivos de cultivo. O estudo foi desenvolvido em delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 3x3, em casa de vegetação, com três tipos de biocarvão (casca de coco, bagaço de laranja e lodo de esgoto) e três doses (0, 30 e 60t ha-1). Todos os biocarvões aumentaram o crescimento das plantas, com variação de 30 a 224%. No entanto, o biocarvão de bagaço de laranja foi o mais eficiente. A presença de biocarvão reduziu a concentração de N nas plantas em torno de 14 a 43%, independente da dose aplicada, indicando a necessidade de monitoramento mais cuidadoso da fertilização nitrogenada. Os biocarvões de casca de coco e bagaço de laranja melhoraram a eficiência da planta na absorção de N no terceiro ciclo de cultivo, indicando melhor efeito com o tempo de contato como o solo. O uso de biocarvão teve pouca influência na nutrição fosfatada na mostarda indiana, mas diminuiu significativamente a relação N:P.

ABSTRACT: Biochar has been used worldwide as an efficient soil amendment due to its beneficial interaction with soil particles and nutrients; however, studies on the effect of biochar on the availability of nutrients such as N and P in tropical soils are still missing. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of different types and doses of biochars on the concentration and uptake of N and P in Indian mustard plants (Brassica juncea L.) grown in a Cu contaminated soil during three successive growth cycles. The greenhouse experiment was set up as randomized block design in a 3x3 factorial scheme, with 3 types of biochars (coconut shell, orange bagasse and sewage sludge) and three rates of application (0, 30 and 60t ha-1), and 4 replicates. Biochar increased plant growth by approximately 30 to 224%; however, the orange bagasse biochar was the most effective. Biochar reduced plant N concentration in approximately 15-43%, regardless of the rate of application, indicating the need to carefully adjust N fertilization. In the last growth cycle, biochar from coconut shell and orange bagasse improved the N uptake efficiency suggesting a better amelioration effect with ageing in soil. Biochar did not affect P nutrition in Indian mustard to a great extent; however, it significantly decreased the N:P ratio in the plant.

ABSTRACT Scientific innovations in diagnostic methods are important drivers of cancer control and prevention. Noninvasive imaging of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in head-and-neck squamous, cell carcinoma and colorectal cancer could be valuable to select patients for EGFR-targeted therapy, as well as to monitor the efficacy and occurrence of resistance to immunotherapy. In order to develop the first Brazilian radioimmunoconjugate for diagnosis, Cetuximab has been conjugated to p-SCN-Bn-DTPA chelator and radiolabeled with Indium-111. The conjugation methodology was optimized using different mAb:DTPA molar ratios, time was then reduced for immunoconjugate preparation, besides the protein recovery’ percentage increased after purification (m = 83.8 ± 0.91 %). The stability of Cetuximab-DTPA at - 20 oC was evaluated for six months, and its integrity was greater than 90% (m =93.9 ± 1.5%, N = 24). The radioimmunoconjugate with specific activity of 185 MBq/mg showed radiochemical purity above 95% (m=96.8 ± 1.31 %, N = 15). We conclude that the radioimmunoconjugate 111In-DTPA-cetuximab is stable and may be applied to the diagnosis of EGFR-positive tumors.

Muitas áreas de montado estão em risco de degradação como resultado de um longo historial de modificações de uso. Nalgumas áreas foram instaladas pastagens melhoradas, visando melhoria da qualidade do solo e a sustentabilidade do sistema. Os efeitos desta alteração de gestão foram avaliados comparando uma pastagem melhorada com 35 anos e uma pastagem natural, considerando-se áreas sob e fora da influência das copas. Determinaram-se os teores de C orgâncio e N total, de C das fracções solúvel em água quente (HWS) e particulada (POM) e de C e de N na biomassa microbiana (MBC e MBN), e as taxas de mineralização de C e N (CMR e NMR). Determinaram-se ainda periodicamente as actividades das enzimas β-glucosidase, urease, proteases e fosfomonoesterase ácida do solo. A pastagem melhorada promoveu o aumento de C e N do solo através do aumento do C da POM, principalmente em áreas sob a copa das árvores. A biomassa microbiana do solo não distinguiu as duas pastagens, mas diferenças na CMR, no C-HWS e na disponibilização de N (actividade das proteases e da urease) sugerem comunidades microbianas do solo divergentes. Confirmou-se o papel regulador das árvores sobre os processos de transformação do C, do N e do P no solo.

Vast montado areas are threatened by degradation, as the result of a long history of land use changes. Since improved pastures have been installed aiming soil quality improvement and system sustainability, it is crucial to evaluate the effects of these management changes on soil organic matter status and soil biological activity, as soil quality indicators. Therefore, a 35-yr old improved pasture and a natural pasture were studied, considering areas beneath tree canopy and in the open. Total organic C, total N, hot water soluble (HWS) and particulate (POM) C, microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN), C mineralization rate (CMR) and net N mineralization rate (NMR) were determined. In addition, for a 1-yr period, soil β-glucosidase, urease, proteases and acid phosphomonoesterase were periodically determined. Improved pasture promoted the increase of soil C and N through POM-C increment, particularly beneath the trees canopies. The two study pastures did not show differences regarding soil microbial biomass, but variations in CMR, HWS-C and N availability (proteases and urease activities) suggest divergent soil microbial communities. Tree regulator role on C, N and P transformation processes in soil was confirmed.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar as características clínicas e os padrões de trânsito intestinal em crianças brasileiras com constipação refratária.MÉTODOS: De 2010 a 2013, 79 pacientes constipados receberam acompanhamento em um hospital terciário. Desses pacientes, 28 (entre 8-14 anos) foram identificados como terapia refratária a convencional e passaram por um método visual simplificado de estudo nuclear do trânsito intestinal, com ingestão de uma refeição líquida contendo 9,25 MBq/Kg de fitato-99mTc. Imagens estáticas abdominais foram tiradas imediatamente e em duas, seis, 24, 30 e 48 horas após a ingestão para uma análise qualitativa da progressão do marcador radioativo pelo cólon.RESULTADOS: Foram encontrados dois padrões de trânsito intestinal: trânsito intestinal lento (STC, n = 14), quando as imagens de 48 horas mostraram que grande parte do marcador permaneceu no cólon proximal e transversal; e retenção distal (DR, n = 14), quando, após 30 horas, o radioisótopo havia passado o cólon transverso e estava retido no retossigmoide até 48 horas. O grupo STC e o grupo DR incluíram, respectivamente, nove e 10 meninos; idade média no momento do NTS: 11 e 10 anos, p = 0,207; duração média de constipação: sete e seis anos, p = 0,599. Sintomas de constipação durante o primeiro ano de idade (p = 0,04) e relatos de fezes moles (p = 0,02) foram mais comuns em pacientes com STC. Observou-se impactação fecal abdominal palpável apenas no grupo DR. A apendicostomia para enema anterógrado para continência foi bem-sucedida em 4/12 (305) pacientes com STC (acompanhamento médio: 2,4 anos).CONCLUSÃO: O estudo nuclear do trânsito diferenciou dois padrões de dismotilidade intestinal e foi útil para orientar pacientes refratários a terapias específicas.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess clinical features and colonic transit patterns in Brazilian children with refractory constipation.METHODS: From 2010 to 2013, 79 constipated patients received follow-up care in a tertiary hospital. Of these patients, 28 (aged 8-14 years) were refractory to conventional therapy and underwent a simplified visual method of nuclear colonic transit study, by ingestion of a liquid meal containing 9.25 MBq/kg of 99mTc-phytate. Abdominal static images were taken immediately and at two, six, 24, 30, and 48 h after ingestion for qualitative analysis of the radio marker progression through the colon.RESULTS: Two patterns of colonic transit were found: slow colonic transit (SCT,n = 14), when images at 48 h showed a larger part of the tracer remained in proximal and transverse colon, and distal retention (DR, n = 14), when after 30 h, the radio isotope passed the transverse colon and was retained in the rectosigmoid up to 48 h. The SCT and DR group included, respectively, nine and ten males; median ages in the nuclear study of 11 and 10 years, p = 0.207; median duration of constipation of seven and six years, p = 0.599. Constipation appearing during first year age (p = 0.04) and report of soft stools (p = 0.02) were more common in SCT patients. Palpable abdominal fecal impaction was found only in DR group. Appendicostomy for antegrade continence enema was successful in 4/12 (30%) of SCT patients (median follow-up: 2.4 years).CONCLUSION: Nuclear transit study distinguished two colonic dysmotility patterns and was useful for guiding refractory patients to specific therapies.

Background: Evidences suggest that nuts consumption can improve energy metabolism. Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effects of acute ingestion of high-oleic and conventional peanuts on appetite, food intake, and energy metabolism in overweight and obese men. Methods: Seventy one subjects (29.8 ± 2.4 kg/m²) were assigned to the groups: control (CT, n = 24); conventional peanuts (CVP, n = 23); high-oleic peanuts (HOP, n = 24). Subjects consumed 56 g of peanuts (CVP and HOP) or control biscuits (CT) after overnight fasting. Thereafter, energy metabolism was evaluated over 200 minutes, during which diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) and substrate oxidation were analyzed. Appetite sensation was recorded for 3 hours. Statistical analyses were performed using the SAS software considering 5% as the significance level. Results: Postprandial energy expenditure and DIT were significantly higher in HOP than in CVP. Substrate oxidation did not differ between groups. Only HOP presented score below 100 indicating incomplete compensation. CT and CVP showed a complete caloric compensation (scores > 100). Regarding appetite sensation, CVP group felt less "full" than HOP and CT. After 3 hours, satiety score of CVP returned to baseline, whereas HOP and CT remained significantly higher. Hunger scores returned to baseline in CVP and CT and they were maintained significantly lowered in HOP. Conclusion: High-oleic peanuts contributed to higher DIT, higher sensation of fullness and incomplete compensation for energy intake compared to conventional peanuts and may be useful to dietary intervention to reduce body weight.

Antecedentes: Las pruebas sugieren que el consumo de frutos secos puede mejorar el metabolismo energético. Propósito: Este estudio tenía por finalidad comparar los efectos de la ingesta aguda de cacahuetes con alto contenido en oleico y cacahuetes convencionales sobre el apetito, el consumo de alimentos y el metabolismo energético in hombres con sobrepeso y obesos. Métodos: Se distribuyó a 71 individuos (29,8 ± 2,4 kg/m²) a los grupos: control (CT, n = 24); cacahuetes convencionales (CVP, n = 23); cacahuetes con alto contenido en oleico (HOP, n = 24). Los individuos consumieron 56 g de cacahuetes (CVP y HOP) o control (CT) tras un ayuno nocturno. Posteriormente, se evaluó el metabolismo energético a lo largo de 200 minutes, durante los cuales se analizaron la termogénesis inducida por la dieta (TID) y la oxidación de sustratos. La sensación de apetito se registró durante 3 horas. Se realizaron los análisis estadísticos con el programa SAS considerando un nivel de significación del 5%. Resultados: El consumo de energía posprandial y la TID fueron significativamente superiores en el HOP que el CVP. La oxidación de sustratos no difirió entre los grupos. Sólo el HOP presentó una puntuación por debajo de 100, lo que indicaba una compensación incompleta. El CT y el CVP mostraron una compensación calórica completa (puntuaciones > 100). Con respecto a la sensación de apetito, el grupo CVP se mostró menos "lleno" que los grupos HOP y CT. A las 3 horas, la puntuación de saciedad del CVP volvió a la situación basal, mientras que en los grupos HOP y CT permanecía significativamente superior. Las puntuaciones de hambre volvieron a la situación basal in los grupos CVP y CT y se mantuvieron significativamente por debajo a las del grupo HOP. Conclusión: Los cacahuetes con alto contenido en oleico contribuyen a una mayor TID, mayor sensación de plenitud y una compensation incompleta del consumo de energía en comparación con los cacahuetes convencionales y pueden ser de ayuda como intervention dietética para disminuir el peso corporal.

Este estudo avaliou o efeito de dois protocolos de exercício na nocicepção, edema e migração celular em ratos com artrite induzida por CFA. Ratos Wistar fêmeas (200 - 250 g, n = 50) foram induzidos à monoartrite por adjuvante completo de Freund (CFA, Mycobacterium butyricum; 0,5 mg/mL; 50 μL) na articulação do joelho direito (TF; n = 24) ou tornozelo direito (TT; n = 26). A incapacitação articular foi mensurada pelo tempo de elevação da pata (TEP; s) em 1 minuto de avaliação. O edema do joelho ou tornozelo foi avaliado pela medida do diâmetro articular (AD, cm) e pelo edema de pata (EP, mL), respectivamente. Ambos foram avaliados durante 10 dias consecutivos. Dois protocolos de exercício foram realizados: (a) exercício constante (TF, n = 6; TT, n = 6), realizando 1 minuto diário de exercício no cilindro (3 r.p.m.); (b) exercício variável (TF, n = 6; TT, n = 7), exercício com aumento de 1 minuto por dia, totalizando 10 minutos no último dia. Os grupos-controle (TF, n = 12; TT, n = 13) não realizaram exercício. Após 10 dias, os animais foram eutanasiados para contagem total (células/mm3) e diferencial (mononucleares e polimorfos nucleares; células/mm3) de leucócitos do tecido inflamado. O exercício variável inibiu a incapacitação e o edema em ambas as articulações. Entretanto, reduziu a migração total de leucócitos apenas na articulação TF. O exercício constante inibiu o edema nas duas articulações e reduziu a migração total de leucócitos da articulação TT. Porém, não reduziu a incapacitação. O exercício variável pareceu ser mais efetivo em reduzir os parâmetros inflamatórios em comparação com o exercício constante.

This study evaluated the effects of two protocols of exercise on nociception, edema and cell migration in rats with CFA-induced arthritis. Female Wistar rats (200 - 250 g, n = 50) was monoarthritis-induced by complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA; Mycobacterium butyricum,0.5 mg/mL; 50 μL) into the right knee joint (TF; n = 24) or right ankle joint (TT; n = 26). Incapacitation was measured by the paw elevation time (TEP; s) in 1-min periods of observation. The edema of the knee or ankle joints was evaluated by the variation of the articular diameter (DA, cm) and by the paw volume variation (EP, mL), respectively. Both were measured during 10 consecutive days. Two protocols of exercise were performed: (a) in the constant exercise group (TF, n = 6; TT, n = 6) performing 1 minute of daily exercise on the cylinder; (b) variable exercise group (TF, n = 6; TT, n = 7), the exercise increased by 1 minute per day. The control groups (TF, n = 12; TT, n = 13) didn´t perform the exercise. After 10 days, the animals were euthanized for total (CT; cells/mm3) and differential leukocyte counts (mononuclear - MON, and polymorphonuclear - PMN, cells/mm3) of the articular inflammatory exudate. The variable exercise protocol inhibited incapacitation and edema for both joints. However, cell migration decreased only in the TF.The constant exercise reduced edema in both joints, and cell migration was decreased in the TT. However, the incapacitation was not reduced. Variable exercise seemed to be more effective in reducing the inflammatory parameters than constant exercise.
