RESUMO O Inconel 718 é uma liga à base de níquel que possui elevada resistência à fadiga e à fluência, ductilidade, rigidez, inércia química e capacidade de operar em elevadas temperaturas, por isto é bastante utilizada na fabricação de peças aeronáuticas de alto rendimento. Estas peças exigem tolerâncias dimensionais e geométricas estreitas que em geral podem ser conseguidas por meio do processo de retificação. No entanto este é um material de baixa usinabilidade, principalmente por ser bem suscetível aos danos térmicos que ocorrem nas peças usinadas durante a retificação. Neste sentido, ambas as funções de refrigeração e lubrificação dos fluidos de corte devem predominar no processo de retificação desta liga, logo qualquer tentativa para melhorar estas propriedades deles que podem representar um grande ganho. Somado a isso ainda é escassa a literatura específica de trabalhos que abordem o desvio dimensional de peças retificadas e como ele é afetado pelos parâmetros de corte. Neste sentido, este trabalho tem como objetivo contribuir com conhecimentos na área de retificação avaliando a influência de diferentes atmosferas lubri-refrigerantes no desvio dimensional na altura das peças em Inconel 718 retificadas. Foram testadas as atmosferas de usinagem, a seco e com fluido de corte, sendo que para esta a última o fluido de corte foi empregado em abundancia e também via a técnica da Mínima Quantidade de Lubrificante (MQL). Como parâmetros de corte foram testados dois valores de penetrações de trabalho, 20 µm e 40 µm. Os resultados mostraram que os menores valores de penetração de trabalho geraram os menores desvios dimensionais, como seria esperado. Além disso, a técnica MQL se mostrou mais vantajosa para redução de desvio dimensional em relação às outras atmosferas de lubri-refrigeração testadas. Os desvios obtidos enquadram-se na faixa de tolerância qualidade de trabalho, IT5 a IT6, coincidindo com a faixa normalmente relatada na literatura específica para peças fabricadas em Inconel 718.

ABSTRACT Inconel 718 is a nickel based alloy that has high resistance to fatigue and creep, ductility, stiffness, chemical inertia and the ability to operate at high temperatures. These properties make the Inconel 718 attractive to be employed in high performance parts. These parts require narrow dimensional and geometric tolerances that can usually be achieved by the grinding process. However, this material presents low machinability, especially because its susceptibility to thermal damages during grinding. In this sense, both lubrication and cooling properties of the cutting fluid must predominate during grinding of this alloy, so any attempt to improve the cutting fluids properties will represent a great contribution. Also, specific literature is still scarce in scientific studies about evaluation of dimensional deviation of ground workpieces and how they are affected by the cutting parameters. In this sense, this work aims to contribute with knowledge in the grinding field by evaluating the influence of different cooling-lubrication techniques on the dimensional deviation of the Inconel 718 workpieces. The machining atmospheres tested were: dry and with cutting fluid. For the latter, cutting fluid was applied via conventional coolant technique (flood) and via the Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) technique. Two values of depth of cut 20 µm and 40 µm were testes as input parameters. The results showed that the lowest values of depth of cut (20 µm) generated smaller dimensional deviations, as would be expected. In addition, grinding with the MQL technique proved to be advantageous in generating the lowest dimensional deviation values. After measurements of the dimensional deviations, IT tolerance grades were calculated and they were within the IT6 – IT5 range, which is in agreement with the one usually mentioned in the specific literature for parts manufactured in nickel-base, Inconel 718, alloy.

Abstract The coolant delivery technique known as Minimal Quantity Lubrication (MQL) has been employed in machining since the end of the 20th Century and has gained considerable evidence in the last years as a viable alternative to the use of the conventional coolant technique (flood). Due to the low oil flow rate delivered by the MQL technique in grinding operations, that generally varies from 20 to 240 ml / h in relation to near 600,000 ml / h flow rate of the conventional coolant technique, the MQL technique provides a reduced risk for human health and environmental damage associated with the use, maintenance and disposal of cutting fluids. In this context, this study was carried out to evaluate the application viability of the minimum quantity lubrication coolant technique under different flow rates in the plunge cylindrical grinding of ABNT 4340 steel with an aluminum oxide wheel. Three flow rates were tested: 30, 60 and 120 ml/h. Grinding trials with the conventional coolant delivery method were also tested for comparative purposes. The output variables used to assess the efficiency of the MQL technique in this work are: roughness, roundness and hardness of the workpiece. Grinding wheel wear and power consumption were also monitored. The results showed that, despite the higher values of roughness and roundness of the workpiece, as well as the grinding wheel wear, the values of these same parameters obtained after machining with the MQL technique were close to those obtained after machining with the conventional technique. No thermal damages and cracks on the machined surface, or even below the machined surface, were observed after grinding ABNT 4340 steel irrespective of the coolant-lubrication condition investigated. The results showed that the MQL with 120 ml/h can be an alternative coolant technique due to cleaner environment and lower consumption of fluid in grinding under the conditions investigated in this work.

RESUMO Apesar do grande desenvolvimento de ferramentas com insertos de metal duro, material cerâmico e outros nas últimas três décadas, algumas das ferramentas de corte ainda necessitam ser reafiadas após a perda do corte por meio do processo de afiação com rebolos abrasivos. A afiação tem como objetivo gerar as arestas de corte de ferramentas novas ou restabelecer as arestas de corte de ferramentas desgastadas e, para que este processo seja eficiente, ela dependerá da seleção correta dos parâmetros de corte, da máquina ferramenta e habilidade do operador. Se neste processo um parâmetro de corte não for corretamente selecionado a geometria poderá ser comprometida e, no pior dos casos, a peça poderá sofrer queima. A queima leva, na maioria dos casos, à perda da dureza da ferramenta, propriedade essencial para que a ferramenta consiga resistir aos esforços durante a usinagem como, por exemplo, quando uma ferramenta monocortante de aço rápido é empregada no processo de torneamento cilíndrico de aços ao carbono. A fim de estudar o processo de afiação deste tipo de ferramenta, esta pesquisa aborda o procedimento de afiação com quatro diferentes valores de profundidade de corte, considerado um dos principais parâmetros que afeta a qualidade da geometria gerada. Utilizou-se um rebolo do tipo copo reto de óxido de alumínio branco, típico para esta operação. O material da peça foi o aço rápido (HSS) com dureza de 62 ± 2 HRC. As variáveis de saída foram os ângulos de saída, de posição principal e de posição secundário, que foram medidos com o auxílio de um projetor de perfil e um transferidor universal (apenas para o ângulo de saída). Além disso, a incerteza de medição foi calculada para caracterizar a dispersão dos valores atribuídos a cada ângulo medido. Os resultados mostraram que houve variação nas medidas dos ângulos em função da penetração de trabalho, como esperado, e que a maior exatidão dos ângulos gerados foi obtida após a profundidade de corte igual a 0,06 mm. Não houve formação de rebarba e nem a presença de queima das superfícies usinadas.

ABSTRACT Despite of technological advances in developments of cutting tools such as carbide inserts, ceramic materials and others in the last three decades, some of cutting tools still needs to have their cutting geometry restored due to wear through the sharpening operation with abrasive wheels. Sharpening aims to provide shape either to new cutting tools and worn ones. The efficiency of this operation depends on the correct selection of cutting parameters, machine tool and operator's ability. In this process, if an improper cutting parameter is selected, the workpiece geometry can be compromised and, at the worst-case scenario, surface burning can occur, thereby leading to reduction of tool hardness. Tool hardness and strength are essential to withstand cutting forces during machining, for example, when a lathe tool bit is employed for cylindrical turning of a mild steel. In this context, this work presents an experimental study on the sharpening operation of HSS lathe tool bit using four different values of depth of cut. The grinding wheel employed was a straight cup white aluminium oxide, which is highly recommended for such operation. The workpiece material was the high speed steel (HSS) with hardness of 62 ± 2 HRC. The output parameters evaluated were the values of the rake angle, side cutting edge angle and end cutting edge angle, that were all measured with aid of a profile projector and a universal protractor (only for the rake angle). All the experimental trials were replicated once and the angles were measured five times. Statistical analyse of the results were performed to evaluate the statistical significance of comparisons and the measurement uncertainty was calculated. The results showed that all angles were affected by the depth of cut, as expected, and the highest angles accuracy was obtained after machining with a depth of cut of 0.06 mm. No burrs and burning of machined surfaces were observed.

RESUMO A retificação é um processo de alta geração de calor, portanto, com seu uso em larga escala, a pesquisa e desenvolvimento de novas técnicas de lubri-refrigeração se fazem necessários, visando respeitar as leis ambientais, preservar a saúde do operador e reduzir custos de produção. Deve-se, então, buscar soluções que mantenham os mesmos parâmetros de qualidade, acabamento e os mesmos efeitos tecnológicos. Um dos métodos propostos para este fim é o MQL (mínima quantidade de lubrificação), que utiliza uma mistura de ar com baixo fluxo de óleo a elevada pressão. O aço a ser utilizado como corpo de prova foi VP 50, muito usado na indústria em moldes para injeção de termoplásticos. O rebolo utilizado foi o de carbeto de silício verde, com ligante vitrificado. Apresentam boas características térmicas, estabilidade química elevada na retificação ferros fundidos, materiais não ferrosos e não metálicos. A análise dos resultados foi feita através avaliação das variáveis de saída do processo, tais como rugosidade, emissão acústica, circularidade, microscopia óptica (para verificação de dano térmico) e microdureza. Dentre os resultados evidenciados, a técnica MQL demonstrou ser superior ao método convencional apenas nos parâmetros de circularidade e desgaste diametral do rebolo, sendo que não houve alteração microestrutural em ambos os métodos de lubrificação.

ABSTRACT Grinding is a high heat generation process that requires large amount of coolant, therefore, its use in large-scale lead to research and development of new lubri-cooling techniques to attend technical requirements, environmental laws, to preserve the health of operator and, whenever possible, to reduce production costs. Into this context, it is important to find solutions that maintain the same quality standards, finishing and the same technological effects. An alternative that has been used since the end of 20th. century is the MQL (minimum quantity lubrication) technique, which uses a mixture of air with low oil flow with medium pressure. The steel to be used as a specimen was VP50, widely used in industry for injection mold of thermoplastic. The grinding wheel used was green silicon carbide with vitrified binder that possess good thermal properties, high chemical stability and is recommended for grinding of ferrous and nonferrous materials. The output variables employed in this work were the surface roughness, roundness errors and microhardness. The acoustic emission signal and diametrical wear were also monitored. Analyses of the machined surfaces to evaluate the occurrence of thermal damages were also carried out via optical microscope. Results show that machining with the MQL technique outperformed the traditional coolant delivery method in terms of roundness and diametrical wear. No evidence of microstructural changes in the machined surfaces was observed after grinding with both lubri-coolant techniques.
