Sete pacientes (63,6%) receberam a vacina ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AZD1222).
ABSTRACT Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to assess vascular retinal findings temporally related to COVID-19 vaccination. With greater information regarding all possible future adverse events, we hope to understand the real dimension and relevance of what was presented. Methods: Eleven patients with visual complaints after COVID-19 vaccination were enrolled. Data on the following were included: age, sex, vaccine, time of symptom onset, systemic findings, medical history, best-corrected visual acuity, and ocular findings by slit-lamp biomicroscopy as well as multimodal retinal imaging (color fundus, red-free photography, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, optical coherence tomography angiography, and fluorescein-angiography). Inclusion criteria were the presence of ophthalmologic signs within 30 days after the first or second dose of any COVID-19 vaccine. Results: Of 11 patients, five had arterial occlusion (45.4%), four had venous occlusion (36.4%), and two (18.2%) had nonspecific vascular alterations suggestive of retinal ischemia such as cotton-wool spots. The mean age was 57 (SD = 16; range: 27-84) years. The mean time of symptoms onset was 10 (SD = 5.4; range: 3-16) days. Nine patients were female (81.8%). Systemic risk factors were observed in 36.4% of patients. Two patients had both neurological and visual symptoms, with arterial occlusion. Overall, 36.4% patients had COVID-19 in the previous year. Seven patients (63.6%) received ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AZD1222) vaccine. Conclusions: Our data suggest that retinal events temporally related to COVID-19 vaccination are possible but are very rare. The relationship of these events with post-COVID-19 vaccination warrants further attention to derive a meaningful conclusion.

PROCESSING OF SPENT ULTRA-DEEP HYDRODESULFURIZATION CATALYSTS. This work discusses the recycling of spent NiMo/Al2O3 catalysts from ultra-deep hydrodesulfurization (HDS) units. They contain a refractory coke and fouling elements from the processed feedstocks. Samples were preoxidized (600 ºC) for 12 h using a very slow heating rate to eliminate coke and volatiles. Experiments were performed in the presence of HF + H2O2 mixtures under stirring at 25-60oC for 1-4 h. The amount of insoluble matter was the lowest (< 1 wt.% of the initial mass) after leaching for 2 h at 60oC using an excess of 50 vol.% HF and 20 vol.% H2O2. Leached molybdenum and vanadium were extracted together with Alamine 304 (tri-dodecylamine) in n-heptane at pH below 2. Aluminum and iron were precipitated from the raffinate as Na3AℓF6 (+ Na3FeF6) by adjusting pH at ~4 using 6 mol L-1 NaOH. Nickel was either recovered by solvent extraction using D2EHPA (bis-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid) in n-heptane at pH 6 or precipitated at pH 8 using 6 mol L-1 NaOH. The first method proved better as less contaminants were present. After slow evaporation of the final aqueous solution, a mixture of Na2SiF6 and NaF was recovered. Fluoride losses were very low (~0.10 wt.%).

ABSTRACT Background: Chagas disease (CD) is caused by the flagellate protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi and can be carried by different species of triatomines, including Rhodnius neglectus, which is wild, well distributed in Brazil, and has formed colonies in palm trees located in urban areas of municipalities in the state of São Paulo. Chemical control has been routinely used to reduce population density, but each year, there has been an increase in species dispersion and density. This study aimed to evaluate the susceptibility of insects to insecticides used in control. Methods: The reference population was collected from Araçatuba municipality, Nilce Maia. Dilutions of deltamethrin were prepared and applied to the back of the first-stage nymphs, which were biologically synchronized. The control group received pure acetone only. Mortality was assessed after 72 h. Results: The mortality rate with respect to diagnostic dose was 100%. The susceptibility profile observed for this population showed RR50 ranging from 1.76 to 3.632. Conclusions: The populations were susceptible to the insecticides tested. It is possible that the insecticide residual effect on this ecotope has decreased the lifespan, and controlling failures may be the cause of recolonization in this environment.

ABSTRACT Important losses of dwarf cashew seedlings during the establishment of orchards in the Brazilian semiarid are related to the relatively short rainy season. This study aimed to evaluate biochar and hydrophilic polymer as soil amendments to increase water retention and reduce plant death in the first year. An experiment was conducted at the Curu Station, Paraipaba, CE, Brazil, using the clone BRS 226. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, with amounts of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kg of cashew wood biochar and 20, 40, 60, 80 g of hydrophilic polymer applied per pit, as well as a control treatment (no soil amendment). Seedlings were submitted to an irrigation regime to avoid water stress (5 L water seedling−1 when the tensiometer installed at a depth of 0.15 m reached 60 kPa). The variables of plant development number of leaves, plant height, stem diameter, and canopy diameter were evaluated up to 374 days after transplanting to the field. The analysis of variance showed no treatment effect on plant development. However, minimum water consumption was observed when 29.56 g of hydrophilic polymer was applied per pit, providing 100.0% seedling survival.

This paper describes a route for recovering manganese and zinc from spent zinc-MnO2 dry cells via acid leaching using sulfuric or hydrochloric acids as leachants. Hydrogen peroxide was added as reductant. Experiments were run at 25-40 °C for 1-3 h. Under the best optimal conditions, over 97.5 wt.% of zinc and manganese were leached by both acids. Zn(II) was best extracted at high free acidity (≥ 1 mol L-1) with tributylphosphate (TBP) or trialkylphosphine oxides (Cyanex 923) diluted in n-heptane. Cyanex 923 was a better extractant than TBP, and the extraction was better performed in hydrochloric leachates. Mn(II) was more co-extracted from hydrochloric leachates and when Cyanex 923 was the extractant, but was easily scrubbed with dilute leachant (~1-2 mol L-1). Zn(II) striping was possible using 5 mol L-1 HCl or H2SO4. Manganese was precipitated as oxalate (MnC2O4.2H2O), free of leached contaminants. High-purity sodium salts of the anions of the leachants were recovered after slow evaporation of the final solution.

Abstract Objective: To analyze quality of life and demographic and clinical variables associated to its impairment in a large Brazilian cohort of patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA). Methods: A common protocol of investigation was applied to 1465 Brazilian patients classified as SpA according to the European Spondyloarthropaties Study Group (ESSG) criteria, attended at 29 reference centers for Rheumatology in Brazil. Clinical and demographic variables were recorded. Quality of life was analyzed through the Ankylosing Spondylitis Quality of Life (ASQoL) questionnaire. Results: The mean ASQoL score was 7.74 (± 5.39). When analyzing the specific diseases in the SpA group, the ASQoL scores did not present statistical significance. Demographic data showed worse scores of ASQoL associated with female gender (p = 0.014) and African-Brazilian ethnicity (p < 0.001). Regarding clinical symptoms, buttock pain (p = 0.032), cervical pain (p < 0.001) and hip pain (p = 0.001), were statistically associated with worse scores of ASQoL. Continuous use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (p < 0.001) and biologic agents (p = 0.044) were associated with higher scores of ASQoL, while the other medications did not interfere with the ASQoL scores. Conclusion: In this large series of patients with SpA, female gender and African-Brazilian ethnicity, as well as predominant axial symptoms, were associated with impaired quality of life.

Abstract Objective To compare the prevalence and factors associated with vertical transmission of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) among pregnant women treated in the periods of 1998-2004 and 2005-2011 in a reference service for the care of HIV-infected patients in southern Brazil. Methods This was a descriptive and analytical study that used the databases of laboratories from the CD4 and STDs/AIDS Viral Load National Laboratory Network of the Brazilian Ministry of Health. HIV-1-infected pregnant women were selected after an active search for clinical information and obstetric and neonatal data from their medical records between the years of 1998 and 2011. Results 102 pregnant women were analyzed between 1998 and 2004 and 251 in the period between 2005 and 2011, totaling 353 children born to pregnant women with HIV-1. It was observed that the vertical transmission rate was 11.8% between 1998 and 2004 and 3.2% between 2005 and 2011 (p < 0.001). The increased use of antiretroviral drugs (p = 0.02), the decrease in viral load (p < 0.001), and time of membrane rupture lower than 4 h (p < 0.001) were associated with the decrease of vertical transmission factors when comparing the two periods. Conclusion It was observed a decrease in the rate of vertical transmission in recent years. According to the studied variables, is suggested that the risk factors for vertical transmission of HIV-1 were absence of antiretroviral therapy, high viral load in the pregnant women, and membrane rupture time >4 h.

Objective To analyze the results of the application of the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) in a large series of Brazilian patients with the diagnosis of SpA and establish its correlations with specific variables into the group. Methods A common protocol of investigation was prospectively applied to 1492 Brazilian patients classified as SpA according to the European Spondyoarthropathies Study Group (ESSG), attended at 29 referral centers of Rheumatology in Brazil. Clinical and demographic variables, and disease indices (BASDAI, Basfi, Basri, Mases, ASQol) were applied. The total values of BASDAI were compared to the presence of the different variables. Results The mean score of BASDAI was 4.20 ± 2.38. The mean scores of BASDAI were higher in patients with the combined (axial + peripheral + entheseal) (4.54 ± 2.38) clinical presentation, compared to the pure axial (3.78 ± 2.27) or pure peripheral (4.00 ± 2.38) clinical presentations (P < 0.001). BASDAI also presented higher scores associated with the female gender (P < 0.001) and patients who did not practice exercises (P < 0.001). Regarding the axial component, higher values of BASDAI were significantly associated with inflammatory low back pain (P < 0.049), alternating buttock pain (P < 0.001), cervical pain (P < 0.001) and hip involvement (P < 0.001). There was also statistical association between BASDAI scores and the peripheral involvement, related to the lower (P = 0.004) and upper limbs (P = 0.025). The presence of enthesitis was also associated to higher scores of BASDAI (P = 0.040). Positive HLA-B27 and the presence of cutaneous psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, uveitis and urethritis were not correlated with the mean scores of BASDAI. Lower scores of BASDAI were associated with the use of biologic agents (P < 0.001). Conclusion In this heterogeneous Brazilian series of SpA patients, BASDAI was able to demonstrate “disease activity” in patients with axial as well as peripheral disease.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

This study aimed to analyze the effect of the proportion of time irrigation with swine wastewater (ARS) and supply water (AA) on alteration of drippers flow rate. The experiment was set up on split-split-plot scheme with proportions of irrigation time of ARS and AA (1E3A - 1 h of ARS and 3 h of AA, 2E2A - 2 h of ARS and 2 h of AA, 3E1A - 3 h of ARS and 1 h of AA and 4E - 4 h of ARS) in the plot, kind drippers (G1, G2 and G3) in the subplots and the operation time (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140 and 160 h) in the sub-subplots on an entirely randomized design, with three replicates. The physico-chemical and biological characteristics of ARS and AA were obtained every 20 h and 80 h, respectively. The flow rate was determined in 22 drippers of each lateral line, also, every 20 h. After 160 h, drippers and lateral line were dissected to investigate the material of obstruction. The combination of drippers G1 and G3 with the proportions of irrigation time 1E3A and 4E minimized clogging process, where the reduction on flow rate values were of 16 and 8%, respectively, after 160 h of operation of the irrigation units.

Introduction: Few studies have evaluated the profile of use of disease modifying drugs (DMD) in Brazilian patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA). Methods: A common research protocol was applied prospectively in 1505 patients classified as SpA by criteria of the European Spondyloarthropathies Study Group (ESSG), followed at 29 referral centers in Rheumatology in Brazil. Demographic and clinical variables were obtained and evaluated, by analyzing their correlation with the use of DMDs methotrexate (MTX) and sulfasalazine (SSZ). Results: At least one DMD was used by 73.6 % of patients: MTX by 29.2 % and SSZ by 21.7%, while 22.7 % used both drugs. The use of MTX was significantly associated with peripheral involvement, and SSZ was associated with axial involvement, and the two drugs were more administered, separately or in combination, in the mixed involvement (p < 0.001). The use of a DMD was significantly associated with Caucasian ethnicity (MTX , p = 0.014), inflammatory back pain (SSZ, p = 0.002) , buttock pain (SSZ, p = 0.030), neck pain (MTX, p = 0.042), arthritis of the lower limbs (MTX, p < 0.001), arthritis of the upper limbs (MTX, p < 0.001), enthesitis (p = 0.007), dactylitis (MTX, p < 0.001), inflammatory bowel disease (SSZ, p < 0.001) and nail involvement (MTX, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The use of at least one DMD was reported by more than 70% of patients in a large cohort of Brazilian patients with SpA, with MTX use more associated with peripheral involvement and the use of SSZ more associated with axial involvement.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the extra-articular manifestations (cardiac, renal, pulmonary, and neurological), usually not related to spondyloarthritis (SpA), in a large cohort of Brazilian patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 1,472 patients diagnosed with SpA and cared for at 29 health care centers distributed in the five major geographic regions in the country, participating in the Brazilian Registry of Spondyloarthritis (BRS). All patients were assessed for the prevalence of major extra-articular manifestations (cardiac, renal, pulmonary, and neurological), classified according to the diagnosis [ankylosing spondylitis (AS), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), reactive arthritis (ReA), arthritis associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), undifferentiated spondyloarthritis (uSpA), and juvenile SpA], and according to the clinical presentation (axial, peripheral, mixed, and enthesitis). RESULTS: Of the patients with SpA assessed, 963 had AS, 271 PsA, 49 ReA, 48 arthritis associated with IBD, 98 uSpA, and 43 juvenile SpA. Cardiac involvement was reported in 44 patients (3.0%), pulmonary involvement in 19 (1.3%), renal involvement in 17 (1.2%), and neurological involvement in 13 patients (0.9%). Most patients with visceral involvement had AS or PsA, and the mixed (axial + peripheral) and/or predominantly axial clinical form. CONCLUSION: Cardiac, renal, pulmonary, and neurological extra-articular manifestations are quite infrequent in SpA, ranging from 0.9% to 3% in this large Brazilian cohort, and affected predominantly patients with AS and PsA.

In Experiments conducted in the eastern part of Minas Gerais in Brazil to evaluate the forage grasses, Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraes proved to be exceptional. Thus, it was decided intensify the research on this grass, conducting an experiment in a sub-split-plot, and plots a 2 x 2 factorial (seasons and management of fertilization), four rest periods in the subplots and six levels of fertilization in the sub-subplots, in a completely randomized design with four replications. The seasons were fall/winter and spring/summer. The rest periods were 21, 28, 35 and 42 days. The management consisted of application of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers scattered conventional and fertigation. To differentiate the dose of fertilization in the treatment fertirrigated, it was used a line-source irrigation system. The fertilization doses had a ratio of nitrogen and potassium, 1 N: 0.8 K2O and were 0, 15, 39, 64, 83 e 100% of the reference (700 e 560 kg of N and K2O). Dry matter was obtained by means of the dry material in ventilated stoves at 60 °C, for 72 h. The dry season had DM yield, but on average, the yield in the autumn/winter was 75% of that obtained in the spring/summer. The management of fertilization did not influence the values of DM yield, but increasing the dose of fertilization has positive linear effect on xaraes-grass fertigated in the autumn/winter and quadratic in the other treatments. The rest periods provided quadratic effect only in the treatment fertigated in fall/winter season.

The diaspores were submitted to temperatures of 41, 43, and 45 ºC for 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 h at a relative humidity of 100%. Two germination criteria were employed to evaluate the results:1. emission of the first 1 cm or longer sheath, and 2. normal seedling. The germination test was carried out with 6 replications of 20 diaspores at a temperature of 30 ºC and a 12 h photoperiod. Based on preliminary results, four diaspore lots were submitted to 43 ºC for 24, 48, and 72 h and the evaluation of germination was based on the emission of the first sheath. At 45 ºC, germination percentage was severely reduced after 12 h. The use of the first sheath is suggested as germination criterion. The diaspore lots were more clearly separated when the accelerated aging test was conducted for 48 h at the temperature of 43 ºC.

Parkia pendula (Willd.)
The Parkia pendula (Willd.) Benth. ex Walp. is a forest species of the Brazilian Amazon, belonging to the Fabaceae family, of regional importance. However, little is known about its species, despite its common commercial use. The objective of this work was to evaluate the germination of seeds in different temperatures. Temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 ºC were utilized. The six treatments were completely randomized, with four repetitions of 25 seeds kept in paper towel to germinate and kept in transparent plastic bags in a germination chamber with photoperiod of eight hours. The method used was completely randomized with six treatments and four repetitions. Germination was evaluated during seven days, being considered germinated the seeds that had emitted normal, larger than 5mm roots and that, at the same time, led to seedling formation. The following characteristics were analyzed: germination (%), average time for germination and normal formation of seedlings, seedling height and seedling dry matter. It was verified that the seeds of Parkia pendula can germinate at the temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 ºC; however, temperatures of 15, 20 and 40 ºC reduced the number of seedlings. At 30 ºC, germination and number of seedlings of this species were maximized.
