ABSTRACT The occurrence of water with high concentrations of salts hinders the expansion of irrigated agriculture in the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast, making it necessary to adopt strategies capable of minimizing the effects of salt stress on plants. In this context, the objective of present study was to evaluate the effects of hydrogen peroxide application on water relations, gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments, and growth of guava cv. Paluma under irrigation with saline waters in the seedling formation stage. A randomized block design was used, in a 5 × 4 factorial scheme, with three replicates, with five levels of electrical conductivity of water - ECw (0.3, 1.3, 2.3, 3.3, and 4.3 dS m-1) and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0, 25, 50, and 75 µM). Irrigation water salinity above 0.3 dS m-1 increased electrolyte leakage in the leaf blade and reduced the relative water content, synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange, and growth of seedlings of guava cv. Paluma, at 80 days after sowing. Foliar application of hydrogen peroxide at concentrations of up to 75 µM reduces the relative water content in the leaf blade of guava seedlings and did not mitigate the effects of salt stress on guava plants in the seedling formation stage.

RESUMO A ocorrência de água com elevadas concentrações de sais dificulta a expansão da agricultura irrigada no semiárido do Nordeste brasileiro, tornando-se necessária a adoção de estratégias capazes de minimizar os efeitos do estresse salino sobre as plantas. Neste contexto, objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de peróxido de hidrogênio nas relações hídricas, nas trocas gasosas, nos pigmentos fotossintéticos e no crescimento de goiabeira cv. Paluma sob irrigação com águas salinas na formação de mudas. Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 5 × 4, com três repetições, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água - CEa (0,3; 1,3; 2,3; 3,3 e 4,3 dS m-1) e quatro concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio - H2O2 (0; 25; 50 e 75 µM). A salinidade da água de irrigação acima de 0,3 dS m-1 aumentou o extravasamento de eletrólitos no limbo foliar, reduziu o conteúdo relativo de água, a síntese de pigmentos fotossintéticos, as trocas gasosas e o crescimento das mudas de goiabeira cv. Paluma, aos 80 dias após a semeadura. A aplicação foliar de peróxido de hidrogênio em concentrações de até 75 µM, reduz o conteúdo relativo de água no limbo foliar de mudas de goiabeira e não ameniza os efeitos do estresse salino em plantas de goiabeira na fase de formação de mudas.

RESUMO O sucesso do cultivo de maracujazeiro amarelo na região semiárida do Nordeste brasileiro está condicionado à capacidade da cultura em desenvolver-se sob condições de estresse salino, fazendo-se necessário identificar técnicas capazes de amenizarem os efeitos deletérios ocasionados pela irrigação com águas de elevada salinidade. Neste contexto, objetivou-se avaliar a fluorescência, pigmentos fotossintéticos e biomassa de maracujazeiro amarelo cultivado sob estresse salino e aplicação foliar de peróxido de hidrogênio. A pesquisa foi conduzida em casa de vegetação, com o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados com três repetições, em esquema fatorial 4 × 4, os quais consistiram de quatro valores de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,7; 1,4; 2,1 e 2,8 dS m-1) e quatro concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio (0, 20, 40 e 60 µM). A irrigação com água de CEa a partir de 1,4 dS m-1 comprometeu a eficiência fotoquímica, os pigmentos fotossintéticos e a produção de fitomassa do maracujazeiro amarelo. A aplicação de peroxido de hidrogênio na concentração de 20 µM promoveu os maiores valores para fluorescência variável e máxima e conteúdo de carotenoides constituindo-se como alternativa para aclimatação do maracujazeiro ao estresse salino. A aplicação de peroxido de hidrogênio em concentração superior a 20 µM intensificou o estresse salino sobre o maracujazeiro.

ABSTRACT The success of yellow passion fruit cultivation in the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil is conditioned on the ability of this crop to develop under salt stress conditions, so it is necessary to identify techniques capable of attenuating the deleterious effects caused by irrigation with high-salinity waters. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the fluorescence, photosynthetic pigments and biomass of yellow passion fruit cultivated under salt stress and foliar application of hydrogen peroxide. The study was conducted in a greenhouse, with the experimental design in randomized blocks with three replicates, in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme, which consisted of four values of irrigation water electrical conductivity - ECw (0.7, 1.4, 2.1 and 2.8 dS m-1) and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (0, 20, 40 and 60 µM). Irrigation using water with ECw from 1.4 dS m-1 compromised the photochemical efficiency, photosynthetic pigments, and biomass production of yellow passion fruit. Application of hydrogen peroxide at concentration of 20 µM promoted the highest values for variable and maximum fluorescence and concentration of carotenoids, constituting an alternative for the acclimation of yellow passion fruit to salt stress. Application of hydrogen peroxide at concentrations above 20 µM intensified the salt stress on passion fruit.

RESUMO A ocorrência de fontes hídricas com elevada concentração de sais se destaca como fator limitante para a produção no Nordeste brasileiro. Assim, é de fundamental importância a busca por estratégias que minimizem o efeito do estresse salino nas culturas. Neste contexto, desenvolveu-se esta pesquisa com o objetivo de avaliar a produção e a qualidade pós-colheita de frutos de mini-melancia Sugar Baby sob diferentes estratégias de manejo de irrigação com água salina e adubação potássica. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 8 × 3, com três repetições, sendo oito estratégias de manejo da irrigação com águas salinas (Sem estresse ao longo do ciclo da cultura; irrigação com água salina na fase vegetativa, vegetativa/floração, floração, floração/frutificação, frutificação, frutificação/maturação e maturação dos frutos) e três doses de potássio (50, 100 e 150% da dose recomendada). A dose de 100% correspondeu a 150 mg K2O kg-1 de solo. Utilizou-se água com baixa e outra com alta condutividade elétrica (0,8 e 4,0 dS m-1, respectivamente). A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 nas fases de floração e maturação dos frutos é uma estratégia promissora para o cultivo de mini-melancia, pois não compromete sua produção. Adubação com 50% da recomendação de K2O pode ser utilizada no cultivo de mini-melancieira sem perda no rendimento. As plantas de mini-melancieira adubadas com 150% da recomendação de K2O e irrigadas com água de elevada concentração de sais nas fases vegetativa/floração de forma continua e frutificação diminuíram os teores de sólidos solúveis e ácido ascórbico nos frutos.

ABSTRACT The occurrence of water sources with a high concentration of salts stands out as a limiting factor for production in Northeast Brazil. Thus, the search for strategies that minimize the effect of salt stress on crops is of fundamental importance. In this context, this study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the production and post-harvest quality of Sugar Baby mini-watermelon fruits under different irrigation management strategies with saline water and potassium fertilization. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using a randomized block design, in an 8 × 3 factorial scheme, with three replicates, corresponding to eight saline water irrigation management strategies (No stress throughout the crop cycle; irrigation with saline water in the vegetative, vegetative/flowering, flowering, flowering/fruiting, fruiting, fruiting/maturation and fruit maturation stages) and three doses of potassium (50, 100 and 150% of the recommended dose). The dose of 100% corresponded to 150 mg K2O kg-1 of soil. Water with low and with high electrical conductivity (0.8 and 4.0 dS m-1, respectively) was used. Irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m-1 in the flowering and fruit maturation stages is a promising strategy for the cultivation of mini-watermelon, as it does not compromise production. Fertilization with 50% of K2O recommendation can be used in the cultivation of mini-watermelon without losses in yield. Mini-watermelon plants fertilized with 150% of K2O recommendation and irrigated with water of high salt concentration continuously in the vegetative/flowering and fruiting stages reduced the contents of soluble solids and ascorbic acid in the fruits.

ABSTRACT: Bos taurus indicus temperament is variable and affects beef tenderization. Our objective was to investigate temperament and performance of non–castrated Nellore and identify groups based on Longissimus lumborum (LL) pH decline as well as beef characteristics produced by those groups. We investigated 94 animals with a subset of carcasses (n = 24) selected based on LL pH at 24 h postmortem (pm) to represent two groups: resistant to pH decline (> 5.8 called pH–Res; n = 10) and normal (< 5.7 called pH–Nor; n = 14). Steaks were fabricated from the LL muscle and randomly assigned to aging (2, 7, 14, and 21 days). Sarcomere length, cooking loss, myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI), and Warner–Bratzler shear force (WBSF) were determined. Data on temperament were investigated in a multivariate approach, while beef data were compared between groups using the analysis of variance. Rectal temperature at the beginning of the finishing phase and total weight gain were greater and related to animals in the pH–Res group (p < 0.01 and p = 0.03, respectively). Temperature and pH decline curves, sarcomere length, and cooking loss revealed that pH–Res produced beef with lower quality compared to the pH–Nor group. Results for MFI and WBSF did not show differences between groups within each time pm; however, overall steaks from pH–Res were tougher (p = 0.06). Incidence of LL pH between 5.8 and 5.9 at 24 h pm did not compromise the tenderization rate or extension; however, it affected the water holding capacity in this population of Nellore cattle.

RESUMO A escassez de água de boa qualidade é um fator limitante para a agricultura irrigada, principalmente nas regiões semiáridas, o que induz à utilização de águas com elevados teores de sais na irrigação das culturas. Diante do exposto, objetivou-se, com esta pesquisa, avaliar o acúmulo de fitomassa e os componentes de produção de genótipos de algodoeiro colorido durante os diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento da planta, em condições de alta salinidade, sendo as plantas conduzidas em lisímetros sob condições de casa de vegetação, no Centro de Tecnologia e Recursos Naturais pertencente à Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Paraíba, PB. Foram avaliados três genótipos de algodoeiro (‘BRS Rubi’; ‘BRS Topázio’ e ‘BRS Safira’) irrigados com água salinizada (9 dS m-1), durante as três fases de desenvolvimento da cultura (vegetativa, floração e frutificação). O experimento foi desenvolvido no delineamento de blocos casualizados com três repetições e três plantas por parcela, conduzidas em lisímetros de drenagem preenchidos com 24,5 kg de um Oxisol, com textura franco-arenosa. A irrigação com água salinizada durante a fase vegetativa promoveu maior acúmulo de fitomassa nos genótipos de algodoeiro naturalmente colorido. Nas fases iniciais do desenvolvimento do algodoeiro a irrigação com água salina pode ser utilizada no cultivo do algodoeiro com as menores perdas nos componentes de produção, sendo estes afetados negativamente quando aplicada água salina na fase de frutificação. Dentre os genótipos, o ‘BRS Topázio’ é o mais tolerante à salinidade da água de irrigação, quanto à massa de algodão em caroço e massa de algodão em pluma, independente do estádio de desenvolvimento.

ABSTRACT Scarcity of good quality water is a limiting factor for irrigated agriculture, especially in semi-arid regions, which induces the use of waters with high salt concentration in crop irrigation. In view of the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the phytomass accumulation and production components of colored cotton genotypes during the different development stages, under conditions of high salinity, with plants grown in lysimeters under greenhouse conditions, at the Center for Technology and Natural Resources of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Paraíba, Brazil. Three cotton genotypes (‘BRS Rubi’, ‘BRS Topázio’ and ‘BRS Safira’) irrigated with salinized water (9 dS m-1) during the three stages of crop development (vegetative, flowering and fruiting) were evaluated. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three repetitions and three plants per plot, in drainage lysimeters filled with 24.5 kg of an Oxisol, with sandy loam texture. Irrigation with salinized water during the vegetative stage promoted greater phytomass accumulation in the genotypes of naturally colored cotton. In the initial stages of the cotton development, irrigation with saline water can be used with the lowest losses in production components, which are negatively affected when saline water is applied in the fruiting stage. Among the genotypes, ‘BRS Topázio’ is the most tolerant to irrigation water salinity in terms of seed cotton weight and lint cotton weight, regardless of the development stage.

RESUMO: Esse estudo descreve um surto de hepatopatia necrótica aguda associada a intoxicação espontânea por Lantana camara L. em bovinos leiteiros. Um lote de 15 vacas e novilhas foram introduzidas em um piquete com campo nativo, com escassa oferta de alimento. Após dezesseis dias, oito animais manifestaram epistaxe, febre, apatia, icterícia, fezes ressecadas e escuras com muco e sangue. A evolução do quadro clínico variou de dois a cinco dias. No piquete em que os bovinos estavam alojados havia grande quantidade de L. camara L. com sinais evidentes de consumo. No total, sete bovinos morreram, e destes, o exame post mortem foi realizado em três. Os bovinos exibiam moderada icterícia, hemorragias no tecido subcutâneo e na superfície de diferentes órgãos. O fígado estava discretamente aumentado, com coloração alaranjada e padrão lobular evidente. As lesões histológicas consistiam em acentuada necrose de coagulação de hepatócitos em região centrolobular, por vezes se estendendo a região mediozonal, além de acentuada degeneração dos hepatócitos e evidente Colestase. O presente trabalho alerta para que intoxicação por L. camara L. seja levada em consideração nos diagnósticos diferenciais de hepatotoxicidade necrótica aguda em bovinos, mesmo sem indícios de fotossensibilização.

ABSTRACT: This study describes an outbreak of acute necrotic hepatopathy associated with spontaneous poisoning by Lantana camara L. in dairy cattle. A herd of 15 cows and heifers was introduced into a native pasture with limited food supply, and, sixteen days later, eight animals had spontaneous nasal hemorrhage, fever, lethargy, jaundice, and dry, dark stools with mucus and blood. The clinical course varied from two to five days. In the pasture where the cattle were kept, abundant adult specimens of L. camara L. with evident signs of consumption were observed. In total, seven cattle died and necropsy was performed in three of them. All animals had moderate jaundice, hemorrhage in the subcutaneous tissue and on the surface of different organs. The liver was slightly enlarged, with orange discoloration and enhanced lobular pattern. Histologically, multifocal areas of coagulative necrosis of hepatocytes in the centrilobular area, occasionally extending to the midzonal area, were observed, as well as marked hepatocellular degeneration and prominent cholestasis. The current study suggests that L. camara L. poisoning should be considered a differential diagnosis of acute and necrotic hepatotoxicity in cattle, despite the absence of photosensitization.

RESUMO O trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar a eficiência fotossintética e crescimento do maracujazeiro amarelo, cultivado sob diferentes níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação e aplicação exógena de peróxido de hidrogênio. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, PB, utilizando-se lisímetros de drenagem, com capacidade de 100 dm3 preenchidos com Entisol de textura franco-arenosa. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados empregando o esquema fatorial 4 x 4, com três repetições, sendo quatro águas salinas (0,7; 1,4; 2,1 e 2,8 dS m-1) e quatro concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio (0, 20, 40 e 60 µM). As distintas concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio foram aplicadas via embebição da semente por um período de 24 h e pulverização das folhas nas faces adaxial e abaxial. Aos 35 dias após o transplantio, a interação salinidade da água × concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio não interferiu significativamente sobre a fisiologia e o crescimento das plantas, exceto sobre o número de folhas. O peróxido de hidrogênio não exerceu efeitos significativos em nenhuma das variáveis avaliadas das plantas. O aumento da salinidade da água de irrigação promoveu redução nas trocas gasosas aos 61 e 96 dias após o transplantio. A salinidade das águas inibiu a assimilação de CO2, transpiração, condutância estomática e eficiência instantânea da carboxilação e o diâmetro caulinar das plantas.

ABSTRACT The study was carried out to evaluate the photosynthetic efficiency and growth of yellow passion fruit, cultivated under different levels of irrigation water salinity and exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide. The experiment was carried out in greenhouse of the Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, PB, Brazil, using drainage lysimeters with capacity for 100 dm3, filled with Entisol of sandy texture. The experimental design was randomized blocks using a 4 x 4 factorial scheme, with three repetitions, corresponding to four water salinity (0.7; 1.4; 2.1 and 2.8 dS m-1) and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (0, 20, 40 and 60 µM). The different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide were applied by soaking the seed for a period of 24 h and spraying the leaves on the adaxial and abaxial sides. At 35 days after transplanting, the interaction between water salinity and hydrogen peroxide concentrations did not significantly interfere with plant physiology and growth, except for the number of leaves. The hydrogen peroxide did not cause significant effects on any of the evaluated plant variables. Increasing salinity of irrigation water led to reduction in gas exchanges at 61 and 96 days after transplanting. Water salinity inhibited the CO2 assimilation, transpiration, stomatal conductance, instantaneous carboxylation efficiency and stem diameter of passion fruit plants.

Abstract Developing a less invasive, practical and cost-effective operative technique for obesity treatment represents a pressing need for our society. In this way, intragastric single port sleeve by endoplication was tested in six pigs during 18 weeks. Celiotomy was performed with animal placed in dorsal decubitus position. Single port gastrostomy was performed and double tobacco pouch sutures were made in fundic region, making a gastric sleeve. At the end, stomach layers and skin were closed in a conventional manner. Means and the standard deviations of surgical time were calculated. The procedure was simple and all animals survived; there were no significant blood loss and no intra and postoperative complications. The procedure was fast (67.4 minutes). The technique has the advantage of not requiring the use of mechanical sutures, making it less costly. The innovation of this procedure was the use of a single port gastrostomy device to perform an intraluminal sleeve. What made this technique less invasive were the use of a single port, nonmanipulation of the stomach intra-abdominally, ease of execution and no need of pneumoperitoneum. The new technique is acceptable and has reproducible viability, had a short procedure time without intra and postoperative complications.

Objetivou-se avaliar diferentes concentrações salinas na água de irrigação e adubação fosfatada em mudas de mamoeiro. O experimento foi realizado em ambiente protegido na Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, (UFCG) no Centro de Ciências e Tecnologia Agroalimentar (CCTA) município de Pombal-PB. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, no esquema fatorial 5 x 4 correspondendo a cinco concentrações de condutividade elétrica CE (0,3; 1,3; 2,3; 3,3; e 4,3 dS m-1) e quatro doses de fósforo (0; 0,78; 1,58; 2,36 g dm-3) com três repetições. As mudas foram conduzidas em sacos de polietileno com capacidade de 1 dm-3 e 50 dias após a sementeira avaliou-se a altura de planta, o diâmetro do caule, o número de folhas, a massa da matéria fresca e seca (folha, caule, raiz), a percentagem de biomassa, o teor de água, o índice de tolerância de sal e o índice de qualidade de Dickson. A interação dos fatores promoveu efeito significativo sobre altura de planta, percentagem de biomassa, teor de água e índice de qualidade de Dickson. O crescimento e produção de biomassa são inibidos pelo aumento da salinidade. As fitomassas obtiveram os maiores valores em média com 1,4g dm-3 de fósforo. O fósforo não inibiu o stresse salino sobre mudas de mamoeiro.

The objective of this study was to evaluate different saline concentrations in irrigation water and phosphate fertilization in papaya seedlings. The experiment was carried out in a protected environment at the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG) at the Centro de Ciências e Tecnologia Agroalimentar (CCTA) in the municipality of Pombal-PB. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme corresponding to five concentrations of electric conductivity EC (0.3, 1.3, 3.3, and 4.3 dS m-1) and four phosphorus doses (0, 0.78, 1.58, 2.36 g dm-3) with three replicates. The seedlings were conducted in polyethylene bags with a capacity of 1 dm-3and 50 days after sowing it was evaluated the plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, mass of fresh and dry matter (leaf, stem, root), percentage of biomass, water content, salt tolerance index and Dickson quality index. The interaction of the factors promoted a significant effect on plant height, biomass percentage, water content and Dickson quality index. Biomass growth and production are inhibited by increased salinity. Phytomasses obtained their highest values on average with 1.4 g dm-3 of phosphorus. Phosphorus did not inhibit saline stress on papaya seedlings.

Objective: Memory impairment is an important contributor to the reduction in quality of life experienced by older adults, and genetic risk factors seem to contribute to variance in age-related cognitive decline. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is an important nerve growth factor linked with development and neural plasticity. The Val66Met polymorphism in the BDNF gene has been associated with impaired episodic memory in adults, but whether this functional variant plays a role in cognitive aging remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism on memory performance in a sample of elderly adults. Methods: Eighty-seven subjects aged > 55 years were recruited using a community-based convenience sampling strategy in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The logical memory subset of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised was used to assess immediate verbal recall (IVR), delayed verbal recall (DVR), and memory retention rate. Results: BDNF Met allele carriers had lower DVR scores (p = 0.004) and a decline in memory retention (p = 0.017) when compared to Val/Val homozygotes. However, we found no significant differences in IVR between the two groups (p = 0.088). Conclusion: These results support the hypothesis of the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism as a risk factor associated with cognitive impairment, corroborating previous findings in young and older adults.

Cultivos consorciados representam benefícios econômicos e ambientais, por diversificar a produção na propriedade rural. Propôs-se, então, avaliar o rendimento e o grau de relacionamento entre características agronômicas da mamoneira em cultivo isolado e consorciado com feijão-caupi e gergelim. O experimento foi desenvolvido no período de março a novembro de 2011 em condições de campo, em Pombal, PB. Foram utilizados o delineamento em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 x 3 + 2, sendo 2 cultivares de mamona (IAC 2028 e BRS Nordestina), 3 sistemas de cultivo (monocultivo e consórcio com feijão-caupi ou gergelim) mais 2 tratamentos adicionais (feijão-caupi e gergelim em monocultivo) com 4 repetições. Avaliaram-se, também, as seguintes características: produção de grãos por planta (g), rendimento relativo (%), contribuição relativa das ordens dos racemos na produtividade total e estudo de correlações. Ocorreu em média maior contribuição de racemos secundários na produtividade total. O comprimento do racemo e o número de frutos por racemo são características altamente correlacionadas; dentre as culturas avaliadas a melhor opção de cultura companheira para o cultivo consorciado da mamoneira na região é o feijão-caupi.

Intercropping represents environmental and economic benefits due to production diversity on the farm. This study aimed to evaluate the yield and the degree of relationship between agronomic characteristics of two cultivars of castor bean as isolated crop and intercropped with cowpea and sesame. The experiment was carried out from March to November 2011 under field conditions at Pombal, in the State of Paraíba. The experimental design was a randomized block in factorial 2 x 3 + 2, using 2 castor bean cultivars (IAC 2028 and BRS Nordestina), 3 cropping systems (monoculture and intercropping with cowpea or sesame) plus 2 additional treatments (cowpea and sesame monoculture) with 4 replications. The following characteristics were evaluated: grain yield per plant (g), relative yield (%), the relative contribution of the orders of clusters in total productivity. On average there was a greater contribution of secondary clusters in total productivity. The length of the cluster and number of fruits in cluster are highly correlated. Between the intercrops evaluated the best choice of companion crops for intercropping of castor bean in the region is the cowpea.

O trabalho foi desenvolvido objetivando avaliar o crescimento e a produção da mamoneira cv. BRS Energia cultivada em irrigação com água de diferentes níveis salinos e adubada com distintas doses de nitrogênio, em ensaio conduzido em lisímetros de drenagem sob condições de campo no CCTA/UFCG. O delineamento estatístico utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 5 x 4, com três repetições cujos tratamentos constaram de cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água - CEa (0,3; 1,2; 2,1; 3,0 e 3,9 dS m-1) e quatro doses de N (70; 100; 130 e 160 mg N kg-1). A irrigação com águas salinas reduziu o crescimento e a produção da mamoneira, observado pela diminuição na altura de planta, diâmetro caulinar, área foliar, fitomassa seca de folhas e de raízes, massa de sementes total e viáveis, sendo a área foliar a variável mais prejudicada. A aplicação de doses crescentes de N proporcionou aumento na área foliar e na fitomassa seca de folhas. Doses de N de até 131 mg N kg-1 promoveram incremento no acúmulo de fitomassa seca de raízes. A mamoneira cv. BRS Energia respondeu à interação entre os fatores apenas para fitomassa seca de caule.

The study was conducted to evaluate the growth and yield of castor bean cv. BRS Energia cultivated under irrigation with water of different salinity levels and fertilized with nitrogen doses in an experiment conducted in drainage lysimeters under field conditions at CCTA/UFCG. The statistical design was in a randomized block design, in 5 x 4 factorial arrangement with three replications. The treatments consisted of five levels of electrical conductivity of the water - ECw (0.3, 1.2, 2.1, 3.0 and 3.9 dS m-1) and four levels of N (70, 100, 130 and 160 mg N kg-1). Irrigation with saline water reduced the growth and yield of castor bean, the observed decrease was in plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, dry weight of leaves and roots, total and viable seed mass. Leaf area being the variable most affected. The application of increasing doses of N increased leaf area and dry weight of leaves. N rates up to 131 mg N kg-1 promoted increase in accumulation of dry matter of roots. Castor bean cv. BRS Energia responded to the interaction between the factors only for the dry weight of stem.

Introdução: A recorrência da exposição ao abuso sexual na infância (ASI) parece ser maior entre vítimas de abuso sexual. Nesse sentido, experiências relacionadas à violência sexual podem perpetuar-se dentro do próprio contexto familiar por diversas maneiras. Aqui, investigamos a associação entre ser exposto a ASI e ter um filho vítima de abuso sexual.Método: Usamos uma amostra com 123 mães, que foram divididas em 2 grupos: um composto por 41 mães de filhos abusados sexualmente e outro composto por 82 mães de filhos não abusados. O histórico da exposição à ASI foi avaliado por meio do Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form (CTQ) e usamos um modelo de regressão logística para estimar os valores preditivos em relação a ter ou não um filho exposto a violência sexual.Resultados:Mães de crianças vítimas de abuso sexual obtiveram maiores escores no CTQ, especialmente na subescala de abuso sexual (SA). Segundo nosso modelo de regressão logística, escores maiores no CTQ foram capazes de predizer significativamente a categoria de ser ou não mãe de uma criança vítima de violência sexual em nossa amostra (Wald = 7,074; p = 0,008; Exp(B) = 1,681). O número de anos de escolaridade reduziu a chance de ter um filho vítima de violência sexual (Wald = 18,994; p = 0,001; Exp(B) = 0,497).Conclusão: Nossos achados ressaltam a importância de um possível efeito intergeracional do abuso sexual. Intervenções familiares e preventivas contra maus-tratos na infância deveriam levar em consideração essa problemática.

Introduction: Recurrent exposure to childhood sexual abuse (CSA) seems to be higher among victims of sexual abuse. In this sense, experiences related to sexual violence can perpetuate within the family context itself in various ways. Here, we investigate the association between being exposed to CSA and having a child victim of sexual abuse.Method: We used a sample with 123 mothers, who were divided into 2 groups: one consisting of 41 mothers of sexually abused children and another consisting of 82 mothers of non-sexually abused children. History of exposure to CSA was evaluated by means of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form (CTQ) and we used a logistic regression model to estimate the prediction values regarding having or not a child exposed to sexual violence.Results: Mothers of sexually abused children had significantly higher scores on CTQ, especially on the sexual abuse subscale (SA). According to our logistic regression model, higher scores on the CTQ significantly predicted the status of being a mother of children exposed to sexual violence in our sample (Wald = 7.074; p = 0.008; Exp(B) = 1.681). Years of formal education reduced the likelihood of having a child victim of sexual violence (Wald = 18.994; p = 0.001; Exp(B) = 0.497).Conclusion: Our findings highlight the importance of a possible intergenerational effect of sexual abuse. Family intervention and prevention against childhood maltreatment should take this issue in account.

Introducción. Algunas especies de Staphylococcus suelen ser reconocidas como agentes etiológicos de muchas infecciones oportunistas en animales y em humanos. Este estudio es la primera prueba del cambio en la resistencia de la actividad antibiótica por Croton campestris A. y Ocimum gratissimum L.contra cepas multirresistentes de Staphylococcus aureus. Objetivo. Ensayar la actividad antibacteriana de los extractos hexánicos y metanólicos de Croton campestris A. y Ocimum gratissimum L. sola y en combinación con norfloxacina sobre la cepa SA1199B. Materiales y métodos. Se analizó la concentración inhibitoria mínima (CIM) y el efecto modulador de los extractos usando el ensayo de microtitulación. Resultados. Por el hecho de que la CIM observada no era clínicamente relevante (CIM: 512 ≥ 1.024mg/ml), la actividad antibiótica de norfloxacina fue potenciada cuando se combinó este antibiótico conconcentraciones subinhibitorias de los extractos, principalmente con los extractos hexánicos. Conclusiones. Estos resultados indican que los extractos ensayados presentan compuestos que pueden ser utilizados como inhibidores putativos de la bomba de eflujo, lo que indica que Crotoncampestris A. y Ocimum gratissimum L. pueden ser una fuente de productos derivados de plantas conactividad modificadora de antibióticos.

Introduction: Some species of Staphylococcus are often recognized as etiological agents of many animal and human opportunistic infections. This study is the first test of change in resistance of antibiotic activity by Croton campestris A. and Ocimum gratissimum L. against multiresistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Objective: In this study, the hexane and methanol extract of Croton campestris A. and Ocimumgratissimum L. was tested for antibacterial activity alone and in combination with norfloxacin against the strain SA1199B. Materials and methods: The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the modulatory effect ofextracts was assayed using microtitre assay. Results: By the fact of the MIC observed was not clinically relevant (MIC= 512 to ≥1.024 µg/ml), the antibiotic activity of norfloxacin was enhanced when this antibiotic was combined with sub-inhibitory concentrations of extracts, mainly the hexane extracts. Conclusions: These results indicate that the assayed extracts present compounds that can be used as a putative efflux pump inhibitor, indicating that Croton campestris A. and Ocimum gratissimum L. can be a source of plant derived products with antibiotic modifier activity.
