ABSTRACT The occurrence of water with high concentrations of salts hinders the expansion of irrigated agriculture in the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast, making it necessary to adopt strategies capable of minimizing the effects of salt stress on plants. In this context, the objective of present study was to evaluate the effects of hydrogen peroxide application on water relations, gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments, and growth of guava cv. Paluma under irrigation with saline waters in the seedling formation stage. A randomized block design was used, in a 5 × 4 factorial scheme, with three replicates, with five levels of electrical conductivity of water - ECw (0.3, 1.3, 2.3, 3.3, and 4.3 dS m-1) and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0, 25, 50, and 75 µM). Irrigation water salinity above 0.3 dS m-1 increased electrolyte leakage in the leaf blade and reduced the relative water content, synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange, and growth of seedlings of guava cv. Paluma, at 80 days after sowing. Foliar application of hydrogen peroxide at concentrations of up to 75 µM reduces the relative water content in the leaf blade of guava seedlings and did not mitigate the effects of salt stress on guava plants in the seedling formation stage.

RESUMO A ocorrência de água com elevadas concentrações de sais dificulta a expansão da agricultura irrigada no semiárido do Nordeste brasileiro, tornando-se necessária a adoção de estratégias capazes de minimizar os efeitos do estresse salino sobre as plantas. Neste contexto, objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de peróxido de hidrogênio nas relações hídricas, nas trocas gasosas, nos pigmentos fotossintéticos e no crescimento de goiabeira cv. Paluma sob irrigação com águas salinas na formação de mudas. Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 5 × 4, com três repetições, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água - CEa (0,3; 1,3; 2,3; 3,3 e 4,3 dS m-1) e quatro concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio - H2O2 (0; 25; 50 e 75 µM). A salinidade da água de irrigação acima de 0,3 dS m-1 aumentou o extravasamento de eletrólitos no limbo foliar, reduziu o conteúdo relativo de água, a síntese de pigmentos fotossintéticos, as trocas gasosas e o crescimento das mudas de goiabeira cv. Paluma, aos 80 dias após a semeadura. A aplicação foliar de peróxido de hidrogênio em concentrações de até 75 µM, reduz o conteúdo relativo de água no limbo foliar de mudas de goiabeira e não ameniza os efeitos do estresse salino em plantas de goiabeira na fase de formação de mudas.

RESUMO O sucesso do cultivo de maracujazeiro amarelo na região semiárida do Nordeste brasileiro está condicionado à capacidade da cultura em desenvolver-se sob condições de estresse salino, fazendo-se necessário identificar técnicas capazes de amenizarem os efeitos deletérios ocasionados pela irrigação com águas de elevada salinidade. Neste contexto, objetivou-se avaliar a fluorescência, pigmentos fotossintéticos e biomassa de maracujazeiro amarelo cultivado sob estresse salino e aplicação foliar de peróxido de hidrogênio. A pesquisa foi conduzida em casa de vegetação, com o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados com três repetições, em esquema fatorial 4 × 4, os quais consistiram de quatro valores de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,7; 1,4; 2,1 e 2,8 dS m-1) e quatro concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio (0, 20, 40 e 60 µM). A irrigação com água de CEa a partir de 1,4 dS m-1 comprometeu a eficiência fotoquímica, os pigmentos fotossintéticos e a produção de fitomassa do maracujazeiro amarelo. A aplicação de peroxido de hidrogênio na concentração de 20 µM promoveu os maiores valores para fluorescência variável e máxima e conteúdo de carotenoides constituindo-se como alternativa para aclimatação do maracujazeiro ao estresse salino. A aplicação de peroxido de hidrogênio em concentração superior a 20 µM intensificou o estresse salino sobre o maracujazeiro.

ABSTRACT The success of yellow passion fruit cultivation in the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil is conditioned on the ability of this crop to develop under salt stress conditions, so it is necessary to identify techniques capable of attenuating the deleterious effects caused by irrigation with high-salinity waters. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the fluorescence, photosynthetic pigments and biomass of yellow passion fruit cultivated under salt stress and foliar application of hydrogen peroxide. The study was conducted in a greenhouse, with the experimental design in randomized blocks with three replicates, in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme, which consisted of four values of irrigation water electrical conductivity - ECw (0.7, 1.4, 2.1 and 2.8 dS m-1) and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (0, 20, 40 and 60 µM). Irrigation using water with ECw from 1.4 dS m-1 compromised the photochemical efficiency, photosynthetic pigments, and biomass production of yellow passion fruit. Application of hydrogen peroxide at concentration of 20 µM promoted the highest values for variable and maximum fluorescence and concentration of carotenoids, constituting an alternative for the acclimation of yellow passion fruit to salt stress. Application of hydrogen peroxide at concentrations above 20 µM intensified the salt stress on passion fruit.

RESUMO A ocorrência de fontes hídricas com elevada concentração de sais se destaca como fator limitante para a produção no Nordeste brasileiro. Assim, é de fundamental importância a busca por estratégias que minimizem o efeito do estresse salino nas culturas. Neste contexto, desenvolveu-se esta pesquisa com o objetivo de avaliar a produção e a qualidade pós-colheita de frutos de mini-melancia Sugar Baby sob diferentes estratégias de manejo de irrigação com água salina e adubação potássica. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 8 × 3, com três repetições, sendo oito estratégias de manejo da irrigação com águas salinas (Sem estresse ao longo do ciclo da cultura; irrigação com água salina na fase vegetativa, vegetativa/floração, floração, floração/frutificação, frutificação, frutificação/maturação e maturação dos frutos) e três doses de potássio (50, 100 e 150% da dose recomendada). A dose de 100% correspondeu a 150 mg K2O kg-1 de solo. Utilizou-se água com baixa e outra com alta condutividade elétrica (0,8 e 4,0 dS m-1, respectivamente). A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 nas fases de floração e maturação dos frutos é uma estratégia promissora para o cultivo de mini-melancia, pois não compromete sua produção. Adubação com 50% da recomendação de K2O pode ser utilizada no cultivo de mini-melancieira sem perda no rendimento. As plantas de mini-melancieira adubadas com 150% da recomendação de K2O e irrigadas com água de elevada concentração de sais nas fases vegetativa/floração de forma continua e frutificação diminuíram os teores de sólidos solúveis e ácido ascórbico nos frutos.

ABSTRACT The occurrence of water sources with a high concentration of salts stands out as a limiting factor for production in Northeast Brazil. Thus, the search for strategies that minimize the effect of salt stress on crops is of fundamental importance. In this context, this study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the production and post-harvest quality of Sugar Baby mini-watermelon fruits under different irrigation management strategies with saline water and potassium fertilization. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using a randomized block design, in an 8 × 3 factorial scheme, with three replicates, corresponding to eight saline water irrigation management strategies (No stress throughout the crop cycle; irrigation with saline water in the vegetative, vegetative/flowering, flowering, flowering/fruiting, fruiting, fruiting/maturation and fruit maturation stages) and three doses of potassium (50, 100 and 150% of the recommended dose). The dose of 100% corresponded to 150 mg K2O kg-1 of soil. Water with low and with high electrical conductivity (0.8 and 4.0 dS m-1, respectively) was used. Irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m-1 in the flowering and fruit maturation stages is a promising strategy for the cultivation of mini-watermelon, as it does not compromise production. Fertilization with 50% of K2O recommendation can be used in the cultivation of mini-watermelon without losses in yield. Mini-watermelon plants fertilized with 150% of K2O recommendation and irrigated with water of high salt concentration continuously in the vegetative/flowering and fruiting stages reduced the contents of soluble solids and ascorbic acid in the fruits.

Abstract Objective We sought to describe the prevalence of microcephaly and to compare the different cutoff points established by the Brazilian Ministry of Health at various times during a Zika virus epidemic. As a secondary aim, we investigated the possible etiology of the microcephaly. Method This retrospective study utilized newborn participants in the Zika Cohort Study Jundiaí. Newborns from the Zika Cohort Study Jundiaí with an accurate gestational age determination and complete anthropometric data were analyzed, and microcephaly was diagnosed according to the INTERGROWTH-21st curve. At delivery, fluids were tested for specific antibodies and for viruses. Brain images were evaluated for microcephaly. Receiver Operating Characteristic curves were plotted to define the accuracy of different cutoff points for microcephaly diagnosis. Results Of 462 eligible newborns, 19 (4.1%) were positive for microcephaly. Cutoff points corresponding to the curves of the World Health Organization yielded the best sensitivity and specificity. Three of the microcephaly cases (15.8%) were positive for Zika virus infections; nine (47.4%) had intrauterine growth restriction; one had intrauterine growth restriction and was exposed to Zika virus; three had a genetic syndrome (15.8%); and three had causes that had not been determined (15.8%). Conclusions Microcephaly prevalence was 4.1% in this study. Cutoff values determined by the World Health Organization had the highest sensitivity and specificity in relation to the standard IG curve. The main reason for microcephaly was intrauterine growth restriction. All possible causes of microcephaly must be investigated to allow the best development of an affected baby.

RESUMO Os recursos hídricos no Nordeste brasileiro comumente apresentam elevadas concentrações de sais, o que limita a produção das culturas. Assim, o fornecimento de nutrientes, como o K e P de forma combinada pode reduzir a absorção dos íons Na+ e Cl- nas plantas, tornando viável o uso de águas salinas. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se, avaliar a produção de aceroleira cv. BRS 366 Jaburu sob irrigação com águas salinas e adubação com potássio-fósforo em dois ciclos produtivos no segundo ano de cultivo. Os tratamentos foram distribuídos em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 5 x 4 com três repetições, relativos a cinco valores de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (0,6; 1,4; 2,2; 3,0 e 3,8 dS m-1), e quatro combinações de potássio/fósforo (100/100, 85/85, 60/60 e 45/45% da recomendação para a cultura). No primeiro ciclo produtivo, as plantas irrigadas com águas de 1,4 e 1,9 dS m-1, obtiveram o maior peso médio e total de frutos, respectivamente, enquanto que no segundo a irrigação com águas a partir de 0,6 dS m-1 reduziu a produção. A adubação com 45/45% da recomendação de K2O/P2O5 resulta em maior número e peso de frutos de acerola no primeiro ciclo produtivo, independentemente do nível salino.

HIGHLIGHTS The salinity of the water reduces the number and diameter of the fruits and, the total weight of West Indian cherry fruits. Potassium-phosphorus fertilization attenuates the deleterious effects of salt stress on West Indian cherry production. The effect of water salinity on West Indian cherry fruit varies with salt stress intensity and expo-sure time to salinity.

RESUMO A escassez de água de boa qualidade é um fator limitante para a agricultura irrigada, principalmente nas regiões semiáridas, o que induz à utilização de águas com elevados teores de sais na irrigação das culturas. Diante do exposto, objetivou-se, com esta pesquisa, avaliar o acúmulo de fitomassa e os componentes de produção de genótipos de algodoeiro colorido durante os diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento da planta, em condições de alta salinidade, sendo as plantas conduzidas em lisímetros sob condições de casa de vegetação, no Centro de Tecnologia e Recursos Naturais pertencente à Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Paraíba, PB. Foram avaliados três genótipos de algodoeiro (‘BRS Rubi’; ‘BRS Topázio’ e ‘BRS Safira’) irrigados com água salinizada (9 dS m-1), durante as três fases de desenvolvimento da cultura (vegetativa, floração e frutificação). O experimento foi desenvolvido no delineamento de blocos casualizados com três repetições e três plantas por parcela, conduzidas em lisímetros de drenagem preenchidos com 24,5 kg de um Oxisol, com textura franco-arenosa. A irrigação com água salinizada durante a fase vegetativa promoveu maior acúmulo de fitomassa nos genótipos de algodoeiro naturalmente colorido. Nas fases iniciais do desenvolvimento do algodoeiro a irrigação com água salina pode ser utilizada no cultivo do algodoeiro com as menores perdas nos componentes de produção, sendo estes afetados negativamente quando aplicada água salina na fase de frutificação. Dentre os genótipos, o ‘BRS Topázio’ é o mais tolerante à salinidade da água de irrigação, quanto à massa de algodão em caroço e massa de algodão em pluma, independente do estádio de desenvolvimento.

ABSTRACT Scarcity of good quality water is a limiting factor for irrigated agriculture, especially in semi-arid regions, which induces the use of waters with high salt concentration in crop irrigation. In view of the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the phytomass accumulation and production components of colored cotton genotypes during the different development stages, under conditions of high salinity, with plants grown in lysimeters under greenhouse conditions, at the Center for Technology and Natural Resources of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Paraíba, Brazil. Three cotton genotypes (‘BRS Rubi’, ‘BRS Topázio’ and ‘BRS Safira’) irrigated with salinized water (9 dS m-1) during the three stages of crop development (vegetative, flowering and fruiting) were evaluated. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three repetitions and three plants per plot, in drainage lysimeters filled with 24.5 kg of an Oxisol, with sandy loam texture. Irrigation with salinized water during the vegetative stage promoted greater phytomass accumulation in the genotypes of naturally colored cotton. In the initial stages of the cotton development, irrigation with saline water can be used with the lowest losses in production components, which are negatively affected when saline water is applied in the fruiting stage. Among the genotypes, ‘BRS Topázio’ is the most tolerant to irrigation water salinity in terms of seed cotton weight and lint cotton weight, regardless of the development stage.

Abstract Background: Weeds reduce water use efficiency in crops due to water used by the weed and to the reduction in crop yield. In addition to the usual presence of weeds in the interrow of different crops, the management of these plants has moved away from the idea of total control. Thus, the amount of water lost through the evapotranspiration of weeds (ETW) must be understood. Objective: Determine the water use and crop coefficient (Kc) of the weed species Commelina diffusa, Cyperus rotundus, and Cynodon dactylon using drainage lysimeters associate with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Methods: The experiment was carried out at the Lysimetric Station of the Federal University of Viçosa, in Viçosa-MG, in a randomized block design, with four treatments and four replicates. Reference evapotranspiration (ETo), necessary to calculate Kc, was obtained in situ through lysimeters cultivated with Paspalum notatum. Results: The highest Kc values were found in the final third of the experimental cycle, equal to 1.32, 0.93, and 0.90 for C. diffusa, C. rotundus, and C. dactylon, respectively. The NDVI showed a good correlation with Kc and biomass, with R2 ranging from 30.9 to 54.6% and from 46.1 to 63.1%, respectively. Accumulated ETW values ranged from 336 to 473 mm, with C. diffusa showing the highest water consumption, followed by C. rotundus and C. dactylon. Conclusions: C. diffusa has higher Kc and water consumption than C. rotundus and C. dactylon. NDVI can be used in the estimation of the Kc and biomass of weeds.

RESUMO O trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar a eficiência fotossintética e crescimento do maracujazeiro amarelo, cultivado sob diferentes níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação e aplicação exógena de peróxido de hidrogênio. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, PB, utilizando-se lisímetros de drenagem, com capacidade de 100 dm3 preenchidos com Entisol de textura franco-arenosa. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados empregando o esquema fatorial 4 x 4, com três repetições, sendo quatro águas salinas (0,7; 1,4; 2,1 e 2,8 dS m-1) e quatro concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio (0, 20, 40 e 60 µM). As distintas concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio foram aplicadas via embebição da semente por um período de 24 h e pulverização das folhas nas faces adaxial e abaxial. Aos 35 dias após o transplantio, a interação salinidade da água × concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio não interferiu significativamente sobre a fisiologia e o crescimento das plantas, exceto sobre o número de folhas. O peróxido de hidrogênio não exerceu efeitos significativos em nenhuma das variáveis avaliadas das plantas. O aumento da salinidade da água de irrigação promoveu redução nas trocas gasosas aos 61 e 96 dias após o transplantio. A salinidade das águas inibiu a assimilação de CO2, transpiração, condutância estomática e eficiência instantânea da carboxilação e o diâmetro caulinar das plantas.

ABSTRACT The study was carried out to evaluate the photosynthetic efficiency and growth of yellow passion fruit, cultivated under different levels of irrigation water salinity and exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide. The experiment was carried out in greenhouse of the Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, PB, Brazil, using drainage lysimeters with capacity for 100 dm3, filled with Entisol of sandy texture. The experimental design was randomized blocks using a 4 x 4 factorial scheme, with three repetitions, corresponding to four water salinity (0.7; 1.4; 2.1 and 2.8 dS m-1) and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (0, 20, 40 and 60 µM). The different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide were applied by soaking the seed for a period of 24 h and spraying the leaves on the adaxial and abaxial sides. At 35 days after transplanting, the interaction between water salinity and hydrogen peroxide concentrations did not significantly interfere with plant physiology and growth, except for the number of leaves. The hydrogen peroxide did not cause significant effects on any of the evaluated plant variables. Increasing salinity of irrigation water led to reduction in gas exchanges at 61 and 96 days after transplanting. Water salinity inhibited the CO2 assimilation, transpiration, stomatal conductance, instantaneous carboxylation efficiency and stem diameter of passion fruit plants.

RESUMO Devido às limitações hídricas tanto em termos quantitativos como qualitativos na região semiárida do Nordeste brasileiro, o uso de águas com elevadas concentrações de sais torna-se necessário para agricultura irrigada. Deste modo, objetivou-se com este trabalho, avaliar o crescimento e a produção da aceroleira enxertada sob irrigação com água salina e adubação potássica. O experimento foi conduzido em lisímetros de drenagem sob condições de ambiente protegido, utilizando-se um Neossolo Regolítico de textura franco-arenosa. Os tratamentos resultaram da combinação entre dois níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,8 e 3,8 dS m-1) e quatro doses de potássio (50, 75, 100 e 125% da recomendação de Musser), dispostos no delineamento de blocos casualizados, com três repetições. A salinidade da água de irrigação de 3,8 dS m-1 inibiu acentuadamente o crescimento em diâmetro caulinar e o peso médio de frutos da aceroleira. A adubação potássica mitigou os efeitos deletérios do estresse salino sobre o crescimento relativo do diâmetro caulinar do porta-enxerto, número total de frutos e a massa fresca total de frutos de aceroleira, com os maiores valores nas plantas irrigadas com água de menor salinidade associada à maior dose de K2O.

ABSTRACT Due to water limitations in terms of both quantity and quality in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil, the use of waters with high concentrations of salts become necessary in irrigated agriculture. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the growth and production of grafted West Indian cherry under saline water irrigation and potassium fertilization. The experiment was carried out in drainage lysimeters under protected environment conditions, using a Regolithic Neosol with sandy loam texture. Treatments resulted from the combination of two levels of electrical conductivity - ECw (0.8 and 3.8 dS m-1) of irrigation water and four doses of potassium (50, 75, 100 and 125% of the recommendation of Musser), arranged in a randomized block design, with three replicates. Irrigation water salinity of 3.8 dS m-1 markedly inhibited the growth in stem diameter and mean fruit weight of West Indian cherry. Potassium fertilization mitigated the deleterious effects of salt stress on the relative growth in stem diameter of the rootstock, total number of fruits and total fresh mass of fruits of West Indian cherry, with highest values in plants irrigated with water of lowest level of salinity associated with the highest dose of K2O.

Abstract Developing a less invasive, practical and cost-effective operative technique for obesity treatment represents a pressing need for our society. In this way, intragastric single port sleeve by endoplication was tested in six pigs during 18 weeks. Celiotomy was performed with animal placed in dorsal decubitus position. Single port gastrostomy was performed and double tobacco pouch sutures were made in fundic region, making a gastric sleeve. At the end, stomach layers and skin were closed in a conventional manner. Means and the standard deviations of surgical time were calculated. The procedure was simple and all animals survived; there were no significant blood loss and no intra and postoperative complications. The procedure was fast (67.4 minutes). The technique has the advantage of not requiring the use of mechanical sutures, making it less costly. The innovation of this procedure was the use of a single port gastrostomy device to perform an intraluminal sleeve. What made this technique less invasive were the use of a single port, nonmanipulation of the stomach intra-abdominally, ease of execution and no need of pneumoperitoneum. The new technique is acceptable and has reproducible viability, had a short procedure time without intra and postoperative complications.

ABSTRACT Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease of the joints, which causes joint pain and disability. Anaemia is a frequent extra-articular manifestation in rheumatoid arthritis, affecting 30-70% of the patients; presenting a negative impact on patient´s quality of life. Some of the drugs used in rheumatoid arthritis treatment improve anaemia; but little is known on the beneficial effects of the anti-rheumatic leflunomide or the anti-TNFα adalimumab, in this parameter. We investigated the incidence of anaemia in rheumatoid arthritis patients treated or not with leflunomide or adalimumab. We also assessed whether anaemia correlates with disease activity. Anaemia was present in patients who had just been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and had never taken disease modifying agents or biologicals (non-specific therapy group), but not in those taking either leflunomide or adalimumab. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate was increased in patients with non-specific therapy in comparison with those taking either leflunomide or adalimumab. Anaemia correlated with increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate. We suggest that leflunomide and adalimumab may be useful in treating anaemia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Objetivou-se avaliar diferentes concentrações salinas na água de irrigação e adubação fosfatada em mudas de mamoeiro. O experimento foi realizado em ambiente protegido na Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, (UFCG) no Centro de Ciências e Tecnologia Agroalimentar (CCTA) município de Pombal-PB. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, no esquema fatorial 5 x 4 correspondendo a cinco concentrações de condutividade elétrica CE (0,3; 1,3; 2,3; 3,3; e 4,3 dS m-1) e quatro doses de fósforo (0; 0,78; 1,58; 2,36 g dm-3) com três repetições. As mudas foram conduzidas em sacos de polietileno com capacidade de 1 dm-3 e 50 dias após a sementeira avaliou-se a altura de planta, o diâmetro do caule, o número de folhas, a massa da matéria fresca e seca (folha, caule, raiz), a percentagem de biomassa, o teor de água, o índice de tolerância de sal e o índice de qualidade de Dickson. A interação dos fatores promoveu efeito significativo sobre altura de planta, percentagem de biomassa, teor de água e índice de qualidade de Dickson. O crescimento e produção de biomassa são inibidos pelo aumento da salinidade. As fitomassas obtiveram os maiores valores em média com 1,4g dm-3 de fósforo. O fósforo não inibiu o stresse salino sobre mudas de mamoeiro.

The objective of this study was to evaluate different saline concentrations in irrigation water and phosphate fertilization in papaya seedlings. The experiment was carried out in a protected environment at the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG) at the Centro de Ciências e Tecnologia Agroalimentar (CCTA) in the municipality of Pombal-PB. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme corresponding to five concentrations of electric conductivity EC (0.3, 1.3, 3.3, and 4.3 dS m-1) and four phosphorus doses (0, 0.78, 1.58, 2.36 g dm-3) with three replicates. The seedlings were conducted in polyethylene bags with a capacity of 1 dm-3and 50 days after sowing it was evaluated the plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, mass of fresh and dry matter (leaf, stem, root), percentage of biomass, water content, salt tolerance index and Dickson quality index. The interaction of the factors promoted a significant effect on plant height, biomass percentage, water content and Dickson quality index. Biomass growth and production are inhibited by increased salinity. Phytomasses obtained their highest values on average with 1.4 g dm-3 of phosphorus. Phosphorus did not inhibit saline stress on papaya seedlings.

Resumo Nos sistemas agroflorestais, pouco se conhece a respeito da influência da espécie dominante sobre aquela que fica no estrato inferior do dossel. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar se plantas de taperebazeiro, quando em consórcio com cupuaçuzeiro, causavam algum tipo de depressão no desempenho do cupuaçuzeiro. Visou também a identificar clones de taperebazeiro mais favoráveis para essa interação. O experimento iniciou em fevereiro de 2005. Durante 11 anos, foram avaliados quatro níveis de influência do taperebazeiro sobre o cupuaçuzeiro, causados pela proximidade entre as duas espécies. Como variáveis de resposta, foram mensurados o desenvolvimento vegetativo do taperebazeiro e do cupuaçuzeiro; computadas a produção de oito safras de cupuaçuzeiro, e anotada a taxa de mortalidade das plantas. Os resultados demonstraram que a concorrência exercida pelo taperebazeiro afetou, moderadamente, o desenvolvimento inicial das plantas, assim como a produção de frutos nas últimas safras, e a taxa de sobrevivência. Foram identificados os clones de taperebazeiro mais favoráveis para serem utilizados em sistemas agroflorestais com o cupuaçuzeiro. Em função dos resultados gerais aqui apresentados, foi possível concluir que o taperebazeiro poderá ser indicado como uma das espécies para compor SAFs com o cupuaçuzeiro.

Abstract In agroforestry systems, little is known about the influence of the dominant species on that located in the lower layer of the canopy. The aim of this study was to evaluate if S. mombin plants, when in consortium with T. grandiflorum, caused some type of depression in the performance of T. grandiflorum and also to identify the most favorable S. mombin clones for this interaction. The experiment started on February 2005. During 11 years, four levels of influence of S. mombin on T. grandiflorum caused by the proximity between species were evaluated. As response variables, the vegetative development of S. mombin and T. grandiflorum was measured; the production of eight vintages T. grandiflorum trees was computed, and the mortality rate of plants was recorded. The results showed that the competition exerted by S. mombin moderately affected the initial development of plants, as well as the production of fruits in the last harvests, and the survival rate. The most favorable S. mombin clones to be used in agroforestry systems with T. grandiflorum trees were identified. According to results presented here, it was possible to conclude that S. mombin can be indicated as a species to compose AFS with T. grandiflorum.

RESUMO: O granuloma leproide canino (GLC) é uma doença micobacteriana que cursa com lesão nodular, cutânea ou subcutânea, tipicamente auto limitante, decorrente de infecção pelo Mycobacterium. É uma doença dermatológica rara, usualmente relatada em países de clima tropical. O objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar as alterações microscópicas e epidemiológicas de casos de GLC. Além disso, utilizar exames complementares para demonstração do Mycobacterium sp. na lesão analisada utilizando coloração de Ziehl-Neelsen, imuno-histoquímica e PCR para classificação e sequenciamento da espécie de Mycobacterium. Foram analisados 27 casos de GLC diagnosticados no período compreendido de 2005 a 2014 (21 exames histológicos e seis citológicos). A raça mais acometida foi Boxer (33,3%), seguida da Dachshund (11,1%). Foi frequente o acometimento de caninos de grande porte (64%) e de pelame curto (96%). Não foi possível estabelecer qualquer padrão de sazonalidade do GLC. As lesões se localizaram anatomicamente no pavilhão auricular na maioria dos casos (93%), constituindo-se de nódulos únicos ou múltiplos, ulcerados ou não. Em nenhum dos casos foi observado acometimento sistêmico. Lesões histológicas seguiram três padrões que variaram de nodulares a difusos, com infiltrado granulomatoso/piogranulomatoso com envolvimento de derme superficial e profunda. A observação de bacilos pela coloração de Ziehl-Neelsen confirmou o diagnóstico. Este teste demonstrou grande variação na quantidade de bacilos nas lesões, não relacionado estatisticamente ao tipo da lesão nem ao período evolutivo. A imuno-histoquímica foi positiva em 90% dos casos, e em alguns casos facilitou a identificação de bacilos, entretanto, em dois casos ocorreram resultados negativos mesmo havendo marcação pela coloração de Ziehl-Neelsen. Na técnica de PCR realizada em 18 amostras, 44% dos casos foram positivos, duas sequências inespecíficas, e demonstrou ainda, que Mycobacterium murphy foi responsável por 2 casos e Mycobacterium hodleri em um caso. Em outros três casos não se obteve 100% de semelhança entre o produto sequenciado e os demais Mycobacterium.

ABSTRACT: Canine leproid granuloma (CLG) is cutaneous diseases caused by mycobacteria that course with nodular cutaneous or subcutaneous lesion, typically self-limiting, due to Mycobacterium infection. It is an unusual dermatological disease, usually reported in tropical countries. The objective of the present study is to describe the epidemiological and histopathological findings of CLG. Furthermore, use additional tests for demonstration of Mycobacterium sp. in the lesion were performed, e.g. Ziehl-Neelsen staining, immunohistochemical and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for classification and genetic sequencing of Mycobacterium species. Twenty seven cases of CLG diagnosed between 2005 and 2014 were studied (21 cases by histological examination and six by cytological examination). Boxer dogs were the breed most affected (33.3%) followed by Dachshund dog breed (11.1%). The disease affected dogs with mainly large size (64%) and short-coated (96%). There was no evidence predilection for occurrence in any season. The lesions were localized, in most cases, at the pinna (93%), comprise one or multiple nodules, ulcerated or not. None of the cases was observed with systemic involvement. Histopathological findings included three patterns of nodular to diffuse, with inflammatory infiltration granulomatous/pyogranulomatous that involved superficial and deep dermis. Definitive diagnosis was made by the presence of acid-fast bacilli by Ziehl-Neelsen stain, showing wide variation in the number of bacilli in the lesions, not being statistically correlated to the type of injury or the evolution period. Immunohistochemistry was effective, and in some cases facilitated the identification of bacilli, but in two cases were negative even with marking by Ziehl-Neelsen staining. In other three PCR-positive cases if not got 100% similarity between the sequenced and other Mycobacterium.
