Hydrogen permeation tests and tensile mechanical tests were performed at room temperature on API 5CT P110 steel to characterize hydrogen trapping and to evaluate their hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility. The hydrogen trap density was calculated from two consecutive hydrogen permeation transients plotted using an electrochemical cell. Slow strain rate tensile tests on hydrogen-charged samples through cathodic polarization at different potentials were performed to evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility. Thereby it was established the lowest potential that characterizes the onset of the cathodic overprotection for studied steel. After mechanical tests was observed a decrease in ductility as the protection potential became more negative and that the fracture mode was changed from ductile microvoid coalescence on the as-received steel to extended quasi-cleavage on the hydrogen-charged steel. The results showed that API 5CT P110 steel has high susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement conditioned by a predominance of reversible traps in microstructure and by high hydrogen solubility. Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between body adiposity and physical fitness with performance in the Supine-to-Stand test (STS-test) in sedentary adolescents. Methods: Sixty-two adolescents, of both sexes, between 10 and 16 years old, participated in the study. Body mass (BM), height, waist circumference (WC), fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), right and left handgrip strength (HGS-right, HGS-left), abdominal resistance (ABDO), flexibility (FLEX), and cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2peak) were measured. Body mass index (BMI), z-score BMI (BMI-z), tri-ponderal mass index (TMI) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were calculated. The STS-test was applied to evaluate the STS-MC by the movement patterns in the execution of the test. The STS-time in seconds (s) was categorized into terciles: fast (FG < 2.0 s), intermediate (IG = 2.0-2.6 s) and slow (SG > 2.6 s). One-way ANOVA, Chi-square, Spearman’s correlation coefficient as well as non-parametric tests were used, with significance p 0.05. Results: The SG presented higher BMI, BMI-z, TMI, WHtR, FM, %FM, as well as lower averages for %FFM, HGS-right, HGS-left, FLEX, ABDO, VO2peak, VO2peak relative to BM (VO2peakBM) in relation to GF. The BMI, BMI-z, TMI, WC, WHtR and FM showed moderate and direct correlations with STS-time and inverse with STS-MC (p < 0.01). HGS-right, HGS-left, ABDO, and VO2peakBM showed moderate and an inverse correlation with STS-time (p < 0.05). The VO2peakBM was moderate and with direct correlations to STS-MC (p < 0.01). Conclusion: It is concluded that excess fat and low physical fitness hamper STS-test performance. Therefore, the STS-test can be used for screening students to assess MC.

Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a type of glycosaminoglycan described as an antioxidant molecule that has been found in animal species such as fish. Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) represents an eco-friendly source of this compound, since its economical processing generates usable waste, reducing the negative environmental impact. This waste was used for CS extraction, purification, characterization by enzymatic degradation, and evaluation of its antioxidant effect. CS obtained from tilapia presented sulfation mainly at carbon 4 of galactosamine, and it was not cytotoxic at concentrations up to 200 µg/mL. Furthermore, 100 µg/mL of CS from tilapia reduced the levels of reactive oxygen species to 47% of the total intracellular reactive oxygen species level. The ability of CS to chelate metal ions in vitro also suggested an ability to react with other pathways that generate oxidative radicals, such as the Haber-Weiss reaction, acting intracellularly in more than one way. Although the role of CS from tilapia remains unclear, the pharmacological effects described herein indicate that CS is a potential molecule for further study of the relationship between the structures and functions of chondroitin sulfates as antioxidants.

Abstract This study aims to estimate the profitability and to evaluate the economic risks of REDD + projects in the Brazilian Amazon. The data were obtained through interviews and questionnaires to the proponents of the private REDD + projects of Amazonia. The economic risk was calculated using sensitivity analysis of the key project variables and the probability of project profitability through the Monte Carlo Simulation Method. The results indicate that the variable cost was responsible for 80% of the total costs. Fixed costs accounted for 20% of total costs. The result of the cash flow risk analysis concluded that REDD + projects in the Brazilian Amazon are viable, Internal Rate of Return of 11.49% a.a. was greater than the 10% a.a. Minimum Attractiveness Rate. The point at which the project computes a positive NPV is the price of BRL 18.6. Projects that sold VCUs at a price lower than BRL 18.6 may be financially unfeasible. The Monte Carlo simulation showed that the probability of obtaining a TIR of 10% a.a. or more is 51.53% a.a. It is concluded that REDD + projects in the Amazon have a positive return probability approaching 50%, but this return is not as attractive.

Resumen Este estudio tuvo como objetivo estimar la viabilidad y evaluar los riesgos económicos de los proyectos de Reducción de Emisiones por Deforestación y Degradación forestal - REDD+ en la Amazonia brasileña. Los datos fueron obtenidos a través de entrevistas y cuestionarios a los proponentes de proyectos privados de REDD+ en la Amazonia. El riesgo económico se calculó de acuerdo con un análisis de sensibilidad de las variables clave de los proyectos y la probabilidad de viabilidad de proyectos mediante el método de Simulación Monte Carlo. Los resultados obtenidos indican que los costes variables corresponden a 80%, mientras que los fijos representaron 20% de los costos totales. Los resultados del análisis de riesgos sujetos a flujo de caja indican que los proyectos REDD+ en la Amazonia brasileña son viables, con Tasa Interna de Retorno (TIR) de 11,49% por año, superior a la Tasa Mínima de Atractividad real de 10% por año utilizada. El punto en el que el proyecto mostró un Valor Actual Neto (VAN) positivo es el precio de BRL 18,6; donde proyectos que vendan Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) a un precio inferior a BRL 18,6 podrán presentar inviabilidad financiera. La simulación de Monte Carlo mostró que la probabilidad de obtener una TIR de 10% o más por año es 51,53%. Se concluye que los proyectos de REDD+ en la Amazonia tienen una probabilidad de retorno positivo próximo a 50%, pero esos retornos no llegan a ser tan atractivos en relación con el alto riesgo.

Previous analyses of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) identified four main dietary patterns (DP). The aim of this study was to explore the association between the previously defined DP and renal function (RF). A cross-sectional study using the ELSA-Brasil baseline data was carried out. DP (“traditional”, “fruits and vegetables”, “bakery”, and “low sugar/low fat), metabolic syndrome (MS) using the Joint Interim Statement criteria, microalbuminuria (MA), and glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) through the CKD-EPI equation were evaluated. Abnormal RF was defined as eGFR<60 mL·min-1·(1.73 m2)-1 and MA≥3.0 mg/dL. Factors associated with RF were determined and mediation analysis was performed to investigate the association between DP, MS, and RF. A total of 15,105 participants were recruited, with a mean age of 52±9 years; 8,134 participants (54%) were females. The mediation analysis identified indirect associations between “bakery” and “fruits and vegetables”, and both were associated with decreased eGFR and albuminuria in both genders, compared with “traditional” and “low sugar/low fat” patterns in the general population. There was a direct association of the “bakery” pattern with MA in men (OR: 1.17, 95%CI: 1.92-1.48). The “fruits and vegetables” pattern also showed a direct association with reduced eGFR in women (OR: 1.65, 95%CI: 1.28-2.12), although there was no significance after adjustment. The “fruits and vegetables” and “bakery” DPs were associated with renal dysfunction. The only independent, direct association was between “bakery” DP and MA in men, raising concerns about DP and renal damage in men.

RESUMO: A detecção superprecoce de gestação é de grande relevância quando se trata do aumento da produtividade dos rebanhos, na tentativa de redução do tempo de serviço desses animais. Por tal relevância, objetivou-se utilizar a ultrassonografia (US) Doppler como ferramenta para predição de gestação, avaliando a irrigação do corpo lúteo (CL), vinte dias após IATF. Setenta e três vacas mestiças foram avaliadas 20 dias após IATF por US transretal. Para obtenção do diâmetro do CL (DCL) e sua área (ACL) utilizou-se o modo B, na mensuração da área de vascularização (VCL) e seu percentual no CL (VCL%) empregou-se o Doppler Colorido. As imagens foram classificadas com base na quantidade de pixels coloridos e sua distribuição no CL, em dois grupos: diagnóstico preditivo negativo de gestação (DPN) e preditivo positivo (DPP). No mesmo dia, a funcionalidade do CL foi determinada pela concentração plasmática de P4. O diagnóstico de gestação definitivo foi realizado por US 35 dias após as IATFs. Utilizou-se o teste t de Student (com P<0,05) na avaliação das variáveis. Grupo gestantes apresentou médias superiores (P<0,05) para todas as variáveis ao Grupo Não Gestantes. O diagnóstico preditivo demonstrou 83,33% de especificidade, sensibilidade de 100% e acurácia de 91,79%. Conclui-se que a US doppler do CL aos 20 dias pós IATF é um método confiável no diagnóstico precoce de gestação.

ABSTRACT: The super early gestation detection is of great relevance considering the increase of the herds’ productivity, in an attempt to reduce the time of service of these animals. Due to this relevance, this study aimed to use Doppler ultrasonography as a tool for gestation prediction, evaluating the luteal body (CL) irrigation twenty days after FTAI. 73 crossbred cows were evaluated 20 days after FTAI through trans rectal US. In order to obtain the diameter of the CL (DCL) and its area (ACL), B mode was used. The Color Doppler was applied to measure the vascularization area (CLV) and its percentage in the CL (VCL %). The images were classified, based on the number of colored pixels and their distribution in CL, in two groups: negative predictive diagnosis of gestation (NPD) and positive predictive value (PPV). On the same day, LC functionality was determined based on P4 plasma concentration. The definitive gestation diagnosis was confirmed through US 35 days after the FTAIs. Student’s T test (with P<0.05) was used to evaluate the variables. Pregnant group presented higher averages (P<0.05) for all variables compared to the Non-Pregnant Group. The predictive diagnosis showed 83.33% of specificity, 100% of sensitivity and 91.79% of accuracy. The conclusion is that the US Doppler at 20 days post FTAI is a reliable method for early gestation diagnosis.

RESUMO Este artigo analisou o processo de convergência no valor bruto de produção de lenha nas mesorregiões do Nordeste brasileiro, no período de 1994 e 2013. O objeto de estudo foi o Valor Bruto de Produção(VBP) de lenha por km2 das mesorregiões do Nordeste brasileiro. Na metodologia aplicou-se o Modelo de Convergência absoluta e estimou por meio do modelo clássico e dos modelos espaciais. Na abordagem espacial foram utilizados o Modelo Autorregressivo Espacial (SAR) e o Modelo de Erro espacial (SEM). A partir dos resultados obtidos, chegaram-se as seguintes conclusões: As mesorregiões do Nordeste Brasileiro tiveram uma queda média de 3,94% a.a. do VBP/km2 de lenha nativa, para o período de 1994 a 2013. Considerando o modelo clássico de regressão linear, a convergência foi verificada e também a presença dependência espacial para VBP/km2 de lenha. Para corrigir a dependência espacial, os Modelos SAR e SEM foram adequados e de acordo Critério de Informação de Akaike e utilizado a matriz rook o SEM se configurou o melhor modelo. Este estudo mostrou a importância do envolvimento da questão espacial nos modelos, seja pela sobreposição de informações do VBP e seja no desenvolvimento das políticas públicas que afetam positivamente a vizinhança.

ABSTRACT This paper analyzed the process of convergence in the gross value of wood production in mesoregions of Northeast Brazil, in the period of 1994 and 2013. The object of study was the Gross Value of Production (GVP) of firewood per km2 of the mesoregions of the Northeast of Brazil. In the methodology the Absolute Convergence Model was applied and estimated through the classical model and spatial models. In the spatial approach we used the Spatial Autoregressive Model (SAR) and the Spatial Error Model (SEM). From the results obtained, the following conclusions were reached: The mesoregions of the Northeast of Brazil had an average fall of 3.94% a.a. of the GVP/km2 of native wood for the period 1994 to 2013. Considering the classical linear regression model, convergence was verified and also the presence of spatial dependence for GVP/km2 of firewood. In order to correct the spatial dependence, the SAR and SEM Models were adequate and according to Akaike's Information Criterion and used the rook matrix the SEM was configured the best model. This study showed the importance of the involvement of the spatial question in the models, either by the overlap of information of the GVP and in the development of public policies that positively affect the neighborhood.

ABSTRACT Currently, there is a lack of studies on the correct utilization of continuous distributions for dry tropical forests. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the diameter structure of a brazilian tropical dry forest and to select suitable continuous distributions by means of statistic tools for the stand and the main species. Two subsets were randomly selected from 40 plots. Diameter at base height was obtained. The following functions were tested: log-normal; gamma; Weibull 2P and Burr. The best fits were selected by Akaike's information validation criterion. Overall, the diameter distribution of the dry tropical forest was better described by negative exponential curves and positive skewness. The forest studied showed diameter distributions with decreasing probability for larger trees. This behavior was observed for both the main species and the stand. The generalization of the function fitted for the main species show that the development of individual models is needed. The Burr function showed good flexibility to describe the diameter structure of the stand and the behavior of Mimosa ophthalmocentra and Bauhinia cheilantha species. For Poincianella bracteosa, Aspidosperma pyrifolium and Myracrodum urundeuva better fitting was obtained with the log-normal function.

RESUMO A espécie Mikania glomerata Sprengel, popularmente conhecida no Brasil como guaco, é amplamente utilizada como expectorante para tratar doenças respiratórias e tem a sua atividade farmacológica atribuída principalmente a cumarina. Os resultados mostraram que o método apresenta linearidade de 0,05 a 0,8 mg mL-1. Ele foi considerado seletivo, exato e preciso. A proposta de um método rápido para determinação de cumarina em extratos de guaco torna-se interessante para a rotina de controle de qualidade industrial, visando à obtenção de medicamentos fitoterápicos padronizados.

ABSTRACT The species Mikania glomerata Sprengel, popularly known in Brazil as “guaco”, is widely used as an expectorant to treat respiratory diseases. Its pharmacological activity is mainly attributed to coumarin. The results showed that the method for determining coumarin presented linearity from 0.05 to 0.8 mg mL-1. It was considered selective, accurate, and precise according to the specific resolution from ANVISA, the Brazilian regulatory agency. The proposal of a rapid method for the determining coumarin in extracts of guaco is interesting for routine industrial quality control in order to obtain standardized, efficient, and safe phytotherapic medicines.

Uma das etapas mais importantes na produção do manjericão é o desenvolvimento das mudas. Nesta etapa, o cuidado com o recipiente e o substrato é essencial, pois afetam diretamente o crescimento e a arquitetura do sistema radicular, bem como, o fornecimento de nutrientes. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desenvolvimento de mudas de manjericão (Ocimum basilicum L.) influenciadas pelo tipo e densidade de diferentes substratos, cultivadas em bandejas de poliestireno com diferentes números de células. O experimento foi conduzido na área de Jardinocultura da Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados (UFGD) em Dourados - MS. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados com cinco repetições, sendo os tratamentos dispostos em esquema fatorial 3x3x5, sendo três tipos de bandejas de poliestireno expandido com 72, 128 e 200 células com volumes internos de 124,3; 44,8 e 17,7 mL, respectivamente. Três tipos de substratos comerciais (PlantMax Florestais®; Tropstrato Vida Verde® e PlantMax Hortaliças HA®), e cinco densidades de substratos (0,36; 0,42; 0,48; 0,54 e 0,60 kg dm-3). Decorridos 78 dias após a emergência das plantas avaliou-se alturas das plantas, massa fresca e seca da parte aérea e sistema radicular, e comprimento de raízes. A produção de mudas comerciais de manjericão (Ocimum basilicum L.) foi melhor com o uso do substrato Tropstrato Vida Verde® na bandeja de 72 células associado com a densidade de 0,47 kg dm-3.

One of the most important stages in the production of basil is the development of seedlings. In this step, care with the container and the substrate is essential, because it directly affects the root growth and architecture, as well as the supply of nutrients. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the development of basil seedlings (Ocimum basilicum L.) influenced by the type and density of different substrates, grown in polystyrene trays with different cell numbers. The experiment was conducted at the Gardening area of the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD) inDourados-MS, Brazil.The experimental design was a randomized block with fivereplications, with treatments arranged in a 3x3x5 factorial design, with three types of polystyrene trays with 72, 128 and 200 cells, with internal volumes of 124.3; 44.8 and 17.7 mL, respectively. We used three types of substrates (PlantMax Florestais®; Tropstrato Vida Verde®and PlantMax Hortaliças HA®) and five densities of substrate (0.36, 0.42, 0.48, 0.54 and 0.60 kg dm-3). After 78 days of plant emergence, we evaluatedthem regarding: plant height, fresh and dry shoot and root, and root length. The commercial production of basil seedlings was improved with the use of the substrate Tropstrato Vida Verde® in a 72 cell tray associated with the density of 0.47 kg dm-3.

O estudo visou investigar o efeito da suplementação dietética com óleo de palma sobre o perfil sérico lipídico e as características seminais de touros bubalinos (Bubalus bubalis), bem como suas correlações. Doze touros foram alocados no Grupo CONT (n=5) ou Grupo ÓLEO (n=7) e receberam alimentação isoproteica composta por silagem de milho e concentrado (milho triturado, farelo de trigo e ureia), com proporção volumoso/concentrado de 50%, durante 130 dias (Períodos 1 e 2). Diferencialmente, óleo de palma foi adicionado ao concentrado (2% MS) do Grupo ÓLEO. Sêmen e sangue foram colhidos quinzenalmente. Houve aumento nas concentrações séricas de colesterol, HDL e lipídios totais nos animais do Grupo ÓLEO, enquanto o período influenciou nas taxas de colesterol, LDL, lipídios totais e VLDL (P<0,05). Houve decréscimo no turbilhonamento e discreta redução na integridade de membranas nos animais do Grupo ÓLEO (P<0,05). Correlações significativas foram encontradas entre triglicerídeos e defeitos menores (r=-0,412; P=0,006), LDL e defeitos totais (r=-0,333; P=0,030), lipídios totais e defeitos menores (r=-0.366; P= 0,017), lipídios totais e defeitos totais (r=-0.309; P= 0,046), e VLDL e viabilidade espermática (r=0,381; P=0,012), apontando efeitos positivos da maior lipidemia na morfologia e na viabilidade espermática. O uso de óleo de palma alterou o perfil lipídico sérico, mas não favoreceu per se os parâmetros seminais relacionados com o potencial de fertilidade dos touros.

The study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with palm oil on serum lipid profile, the seminal characteristics of buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) and the correlations between them. Twelve bulls were divided into Group CONT (n = 5) or Group OIL (n = 7). Animals in both groups were fed with isoproteic diets composed of corn silage and concentrated (ground corn, wheat bran and urea), with 50% forage/concentrate ratio, during 130 days (Periods 1 and 2). Palm oil (2%DM) was added to diet offered to Group OIL. Semen and blood samples were collected every two weeks. Increased serum levels of cholesterol, HDL and total lipids were observed for Group OIL, while the period influenced on cholesterol, LDL, total lipids and VLDL (P<0,05). Treatment decreased gross motility (P<0.05) and slightly reduced sperm membrane integrity (P<0.05) in animals of Group OIL. There were significant correlations between triglycerides and minor defects (r=-0.412, P=0.006), LDL and total defects (r=-0.333, P=0.030), total lipids and minor defects (r=-0.366, P=0.017), VLDL and spermatic viability (r=0.381, P=0.012), and total lipids and totals defects (r=-0.309, P=0.046), highlighting positive effects of higher lipid serum levels on sperm morphology and viability. The incorporation of palm oil in the diet altered the serum lipid profile, but it showed no positive effect on seminal parameters related to the potential of bull fertility

Realizou-se a detecção do gene de Staphylococcus aureus, de enterotoxinas e de resistência à meticilina com extração de DNA feita diretamente de amostras de leite. Das 200 amostras estudadas, 145 (72,5%) amplificaram o gene femA, e estas foram analisadas quanto à presença dos genes sea, seb, sec e mecA. Os genes das enterotoxinas mais prevalentes foram: sea (60%), seb (37,9%) e sec (6,9%). Foram encontradas 18 amostras de leite (11,0 %) com S. aureus portadores do gene mecA. A detecção de S. aureus diretamente do leite, sem a necessidade de isolamento bacteriano e a caracterização do potencial enterotoxigênico, demonstra que a técnica de PCR é muito útil para estudos epidemiológicos das infecções estafilocócicas da glândula mamária. O alto percentual (72,5%) de amostras de leite positivas para a presença do gene femA sugere que S. aureus constitui um dos principais agentes causadores de infecções intramamárias na microrregião de Sete Lagoas-MG e que seu potencial enterotoxigênico e presença do gene mecA, que identifica o S. aureus resistente à meticlina, representa um risco potencial à saúde pública.

This work was performed to detect the Staphylococcus aureus gene, enterotoxins resistance to methicillin with the extraction of DNA directly from milk samples. Of the 200 samples studied 145 (72.5%) amplified the femA gene, which were analyzed regarding the presence of sea, seb, sec and mecA genes. The most prevalent enterotoxins genes were: sea (60%), seb (37.9%) and sec (6.9%). 18 milk samples (11 %) had S. aureus carrying the mecA gene. The detection of S. aureus directly from the milk, with no need for bacterial isolation and the characterization of the enterotoxigenic potential demonstrate that the PCR technique is very useful for epidemiological studies of staphylococcal infections of the mammary gland. The high percentage (72.5%) of positive milk samples for the presence of the femA gene suggests that S. aureus constitutes of the main agents which cause intramammary infections in the micro region of Sete Lagoas-MG and that its enterotoxigenic potential and the presence of the mecA gene, which identifies the S. aureus resistant to methicillin, represent a potential risk to public health.
