Abstract Objective: To assess the predictive value of selected growth phenotypes for neonatal morbidity and mortality in preterm infants < 30 weeks and to compare them with INTERGROWTH-21st (IG21). Methods: Retrospective analysis of data from the Brazilian Neonatal Research Network (BNRN) database for very low birth weight (VLBW) at 20 public tertiary-care university hospitals. Outcome: the composite neonatal morbidity and mortality (CNMM) consisted of in-hospital death, oxygen use at 36 weeks, intraventricular hemorrhage grade 3 or 4, and Bell stage 2 or 3 necrotizing enterocolitis. Selected growth phenotypes: small-for-gestational-age (SGA) defined as being < 3rd (SGA3) or 10th (SGA10) percentiles of BW, and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) as being > 97th percentile of BW. Stunting as being < 3rd percentile of the length and wasting as being < 3rd percentile of BMI. Single and multiple log-binomial regression models were fitted to estimate the relative risks of CNMM, comparing them to IG21. Results: 4,072 infants were included. The adjusted relative risks of CNMM associated with selected growth phenotypes were (BNRN/IG21): 1.45 (0.92–2.31)/1.60 (1.27–2.02) for SGA; 0.90 (0.55–1.47)/1.05 (0.55–1.99) for LGA; 1.65 (1.08–2.51)/1.58 (1.28–1.96) for stunting; and 1.48 (1.02–2.17) for wasting. Agreement between the two references was variable. The growth phenotypes had good specificity (>95%) and positive predictive value (70-90%), with poor sensitivity and low negative predictive value. Conclusion: The BNRN phenotypes at birth differed markedly from the IG21 standard and showed poor accuracy in predicting adverse neonatal outcomes.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar as características clínicas e sociodemográficas e a sobrevida de indivíduos com síndrome respiratória aguda grave por covid-19, segundo esquema vacinal contra covid-19, Brasil, 2021-2022. Métodos Estudo de coorte, com dados do Sistema de Informação de Vigilância Epidemiológica da Gripe; métodos de Kaplan-Meier e árvore de sobrevivência foram utilizados para analisar a sobrevida. Resultados Dos 559.866 casos internados, observou-se maior proporção de vacinados entre sexo feminino (15,0%), idosos ≥ 80 anos (34,5%), na região Sudeste (15,7%), entre os que não receberam suporte ventilatório (21,2%) e os não evoluídos a óbito (15,2%); na curva de sobrevida, não imunizados apresentaram maior risco de óbito, independentemente da faixa etária (p-valor < 0,001); idosos que não realizaram ventilação mecânica, com dose de reforço, apresentaram menor risco, comparados a seus pares com duas doses ou não imunizados (hazard ratio = 0,64; IC95% 0,62;0,67). Conclusão Observou-se menor risco de ocorrência de óbito nos indivíduos vacinados, especialmente com duas doses ou reforço.

RESUMEN Objetivo Analizar las características clínicas, sociodemográficas y supervivencia de individuos con síndrome respiratoria aguda grave por COVID-19, según el esquema de vacunación contra COVID-19, Brasil, 2021-2022. Métodos Estudio de cohorte con datos del Sistema de Informação de Vigilância Epidemiológica de la Gripe; se utilizó el método de Kaplan-Meier y el árbol de supervivencia para analizar la supervivencia. Resultados Entre los 559.866 casos hospitalizados, se observó una mayor proporción de vacunados entre el sexo femenino (15,0%), ancianos ≥ 80 (34,5%), región Sudeste (15,7%), quienes no recibieron soporte ventilatorio (21,2%) y no fallecidos (15,2%); la curva de supervivencia mostró que los no inmunizados presentaron un mayor riesgo de óbito en todos los grupos de edad (p-valor < 0,001); los ancianos ≥ 80, que no recibieron ventilación mecánica, con dosis de refuerzo, tienen un menor riesgo en comparación con sus pares con dos dosis o no vacunados (HR = 0,64; IC95% 0,62;0,67). Conclusión El menor riesgo de óbito se observó en individuos vacunados, especialmente aquellos con dos dosis o refuerzo.

Methods This was a cohort study based on data from the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System; the Kaplan-Meier and Survival Tree methods were used to analyze survival. Results Among the 559,866 hospitalized cases, a higher proportion of vaccinated individuals was found among female (15.0%), elderly people aged ≥ 80 (34.5%), people from the Southeast region (15.7%), those who did not undergo respiratory support (21.2%) and those who did progress to death (15.2%); the survival curve showed that risk of death for unvaccinated individuals was higher in all age groups (p-value < 0.001); elderly people aged ≥ 80, who did not undergo mechanical ventilation and who had a booster dose had lower risk when compared to their peers who had two doses or were unvaccinated (hazard ratio = 0.64; 95%CI 0.62;0.67). Conclusion Lowest risk of death was found in vaccinated individuals, especially those who had two doses or a booster dose as well.

ABSTRACT Brazil is home to many mountain ranges which harbor diverse avifauna. However, studies on the altitudinal distribution of Brazilian birds are still few and many have never been published, hampering both the dissemination of basic information and conservation actions. Here we present a critical review of ornithological studies undertaken in Brazilian mountain ranges, and propose a classification of geographic scope, altitudinal gradient, and methodology. Since 1922, 184 ornithological studies included altitude in some way in Brazil, encompassing a variety of research topics and species. About a quarter of these studies were never published in peer-reviewed journals, and 39% do not provide basic data on elevation nor link the bird species with sampling plots, thus limiting their applicability. The majority of studies are concentrated (83%) in southern and southeastern Brazil, especially in the Serra do Mar range, and so most data are associated with the Atlantic Forest. Gaps remain in other regions, such as Amazonia (Pantepui region). Most studies either did not sample the entire elevation gradient, were not standardized, lacked explicit hypothesis, or did not account for a seasonal sampling embracing the four seasons of the year, so interpretation of the observed patterns remains difficult. With this compilation, we organize the available information and point to future altitudinal research on birds, in addition to highlighting the importance of preserving habitats along altitudinal gradients in the mountainous regions in Brazil.

ABSTRACT Birds’ seasonal altitudinal movements in Brazil are poorly understood. The main source of information and has fostered interest since the 1980s. However, most of the available information is anecdotal, sources are repeatedly cited, and the information provided is quite superficial and speculative. Through bibliographic searches, we found 107 studies, 83 (77%) of which we consider valid, and only 63 (59%) were peer-reviewed. Most studies were carried out in southern and southeastern Brazil. Only 11 studies explicitly addressed seasonal altitudinal movements. Surprisingly, none of the studies simultaneously comprised a full year of study, standardized sampling methods, and encompassed the entire altitudinal range through which the birds might have moved. As a consequence, the quality of the data is questionable, and the expression “altitudinal migration” is unlikely to be accurate and has never been unequivocally demonstrated for birds in Brazil. Mention of “altitudinal migration” was found for 68 bird species, but these must be more clearly defined and appropriately tested.

Abstract Artificial neural networks (ANNs) may experience problems due to insufficient or uninformative predictors, and these problems are common for complex predictions such as those for rainfall. However, some studies point to the use of climate variables and anomalies as predictors to make the forecast more accurate. This research aimed to predict the monthly rainfall, one month in advance, in four municipalities of the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte using an ANN trained with different climate variables; additionally, it aimed to indicate the suitability of such variables as inputs to these models. The models were developed using the MATLAB® software Version R2011a using the NNTOOL toolbox. The ANNs were trained by the multilayer perceptron architecture and the feedforward and backpropagation algorithm using two combinations of input data, with two and six variables, and one combination of input data with the three most correlated variables to observed rainfall from 1970 to 1999 to predict the rainfall from 2000 to 2009. The climate variable most correlated with the rainfall of the following month was the average compensated temperature. Even when using the variables most correlated with precipitation as predictors (0.66 ≤ nt index ≤ 1.26), there was no notable improvement in the predictive capacity of the models when compared to those that did not use climate variables as predictors (0.55 ≤ nt index ≤ 0.80).

Resumo As redes neurais artificiais (RNAs) podem apresentar problemas devido a preditores insuficientes ou não informativos, o que é comum para previsões complexas, como as de precipitação pluvial. No entanto, alguns estudos apontam para o uso de variáveis e anomalias climáticas como preditores para tornar a previsão mais precisa. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo prever a precipitação mensal, com um mês de antecedência, em quatro municípios da região metropolitana de Belo Horizonte utilizando uma RNA treinada com diferentes variáveis climáticas; além disso, buscou indicar a adequação de tais variáveis como entrada para esses modelos. Os modelos foram desenvolvidos por meio do software MATLAB® versão R2011a utilizando a toolbox NNTOOL. As RNAs foram treinadas pela arquitetura multilayer perceptron e pelo algoritmo feedforward e backpropagation usando duas combinações de dados de entrada, com duas e seis variáveis, e uma combinação de dados de entrada com as três variáveis mais correlacionadas com precipitação observada de 1970 a 1999 para prever a precipitação de 2000 a 2009. A variável climática mais correlacionada com a precipitação do mês seguinte foi a temperatura média compensada. Mesmo utilizando as variáveis mais correlacionadas com a precipitação como preditores (0,66 ≤ índice nt ≤ 1,26), não houve melhora significativa na capacidade preditiva dos modelos quando comparado aos que não utilizaram variáveis climáticas como preditores (0,55 ≤ índice nt ≤ 0,80).

Abstract Background Major advances have been seen in techniques and devices for performing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) for chronic total occlusions (CTOs), but there are limited real-world practice data from developing countries. Objectives To report clinical and angiographic characteristics, procedural aspects, and clinical outcomes of CTO PCI performed at dedicated centers in Brazil. Methods Included patients underwent CTO PCI at centers participating in the LATAM CTO Registry, a Latin American multicenter registry dedicated to prospective collection of these data. Inclusion criteria were procedures performed in Brazil, age 18 years or over, and presence of CTO with PCI attempt. CTO was defined as a 100% lesion in an epicardial coronary artery, known or estimated to have lasted at least 3 months. Results Data on 1196 CTO PCIs were included. Procedures were performed primarily for angina control (85%) and/or treatment of moderate/severe ischemia (24%). Technical success rate was 84%, being achieved with antegrade wire approaches in 81% of procedures, antegrade dissection and re-entry in 9%, and retrograde approaches in 10%. In-hospital adverse cardiovascular events occurred in 2.3% of cases, with a mortality rate of 0.75%. Conclusions CTOs can be treated effectively in Brazil by using PCI, with low complication rates. The scientific and technological development observed in this area in the past decade is reflected in the clinical practice of dedicated Brazilian centers.

Resumo Fundamento Tem sido observado um grande avanço nas técnicas e nos dispositivos para a realização de intervenções coronárias percutâneas (ICP) em oclusões totais coronarianas crônicas (OTC), mas existem poucos dados da prática do mundo real em países em desenvolvimento. Objetivos Relatar as características clínicas e angiográficas, os aspectos dos procedimentos e os resultados clínicos da ICP de OTC em centros dedicados a esse procedimento no Brasil. Métodos Os pacientes incluídos foram submetidos à ICP de OTC em centros participantes do LATAM CTO Registry, um registro multicêntrico latino-americano dedicado à coleta prospectiva desses dados. Os critérios de inclusão foram procedimentos realizados no Brasil, idade acima de 18 anos e presença de OTC com tentativa de ICP. A definição de OTC foi lesão de 100% em uma artéria coronária epicárdica, conhecida ou estimada como tendo pelo menos 3 meses de evolução. Resultados Foram incluídos dados de 1.196 ICPs de OTC. Os procedimentos foram realizados principalmente para controle da angina (85%) e/ou tratamento de uma grande área isquêmica (24%). A taxa de sucesso técnico foi de 84% e foi alcançada com técnicas de fios anterógrados em 81%, dissecção/reentrada anterógrada em 9% e retrógrada em 10% dos procedimentos. Os eventos cardiovasculares adversos intra-hospitalares ocorreram em 2,3% dos casos, sendo a mortalidade de 0,75%. Conclusões As OTC podem ser tratadas no Brasil por intervenção coronária percutânea de forma efetiva e com baixas taxas de complicações. O desenvolvimento científico e tecnológico observado nessa área na última década reflete-se na prática clínica de centros brasileiros dedicados a essa técnica.

We present records of chewing lice collected from bird skins of the families Anhimidae, Threskiornithidae, and Aramidae deposited at the Museum of Zoology of University of São Paulo (MZUSP). Twenty-one chewing lice species from the suborders Amblycera and Ischnocera were identified, seven of which are new records for Brazil. These species belong to the genera Ardeicola (1), Colpocephalum (3), Ibidoecus (1), and Plegadiphilus (2). Furthermore, ten species were recorded from new localities in Brazil, and Colpocephalum cayennensisPrice & Emerson, 1967 is for the first time recorded with precise locality in the country. Lastly, the bird host subspecies Phimosus infuscatus nudifrons (Spix, 1825) (Threskiornithidae) was for the first time found to harbor lice species.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of fruit maturation stages and pre-germination treatments with plant regulators on the physiological quality of seeds of cv. BRS Mel do Cerrado. Two experiments were carried out, germination and emergence, installed in a completely randomized design in a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement, with three stages maturation (1-partially ripe fruits; 2-fully ripe fruits and 3-senescent fruits) and two pre-germination treatments (1. [GA4+7 +N-(phenylmethyl)-aminopurine (300 ppm)] and 2. distilled water), forming six treatments with four replications of 50 seeds. The evaluated characteristics were germination percentage at 14 and 35 days, germination speed index (GSI), emergence percentage and emergence speed index (ESI). Germination at 14 days, GSI and seedling emergence were not affected by the maturation stage, however germination and GSI were higher when the plant regulator was used. The final percentage of germination was higher in seeds taken from partially ripe fruits and treated with regulators and a higher ESI was observed for seeds from senescent fruits and treated with regulator. Seeds treated with plant regulators are more vigorous and have a higher rate of seedling emergence.

Resumo Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de estádios de maturação de frutos e de tratamentos pré-germinativos com reguladores vegetais na qualidade fisiológica das sementes de maracujá doce cv. BRS Mel do Cerrado. Foram realizados dois experimentos, de germinação e de emergência, instalados em delievalneamento inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 3 x 2, sendo três estádios dematuração (1-frutos parcialmente maduros; 2-frutos totalmente maduros, e 3-frutossenescentes) e dois tratamentos pré-germinativos (1. [GA4+7 +N-(fenilmetil)-aminopurina(300 ppm)]e 2. água destilada), formando seis tratamentos com quatro repetições de 50sementes. As características avaliadas foram percentagem de germinação, aos 14 e 35 dias, índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG), percentagem de emergência e índice de velocidade deemergência(IVE). A germinação, aos 14 dias, o IVG e a emergência de plântulas não foramafetados pelos estádios de maturação; entretanto, a germinação e o IVG foram maioresquando se utilizaram os reguladores vegetais. A porcentagem final de germinação foi maior para sementes retiradas de frutos parcialmente maduros e tratadas com reguladoresvegetais e observou-se maior IVE para sementes de frutos senescentes e tratadas comreguladores. Sementes tratadas com reguladores vegetais são mais vigorosas e apresentam maior velocidade de emergência de plântulas.

ABSTRACT Glulam is a viable alternative for the rational use of wood, allowing the use of young timber. Also, when engineering the timber, it is possible to use lower quality trunks with a smaller diameter. However, the performance of the product depends on the species used, the thickness and position of the lamellae, the type of adhesive, the bonding performance. This work aimed to study the feasibility of using a fast growing timber for the production of glulam. The selected timber species was Eucalyptus urophylla, clonal COP 1404, which is characterized by its fast growth and lack of studies regarding its application in civil construction. A two-component polyurethane adhesive based on castor oil was used. The experimental program focused on the characterization of fresh timber and the mechanical performance of glulam compared to solid wood, using statistical methods to analyze the resistance of the prototypes. The results indicated that the adhesive was efficient in gluing the timber, so that shearing occurred in the timber, in addition to the flexural verification showing behavior of a single body, with no points of discontinuity due to the glue line.

RESUMO A Madeira Lamelada Colada (MLC) é uma alternativa viável para o aproveitamento racional da madeira, possibilitando o uso de madeiras jovens. Ainda, ao engenheirar a madeira, pode-se viabilizar o uso de troncos de menor qualidade e menor diâmetro. Entretanto, o desempenho do produto depende da espécie utilizada, das espessuras e posições das lamelas, do tipo de adesivo, do desempenho da colagem. Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a viabilidade do uso de uma madeira de rápido crescimento para a produção de MLC. A espécie de madeira selecionada foi Eucalyptus urophylla, clonal COP 1404, que se caracteriza por ter rápido crescimento e por ter uma lacuna em estudos que visam sua aplicação na construção civil. Empregou-se o adesivo poliuretano bicomponente à base de óleo mamona. O programa experimental teve como foco a caracterização da madeira in natura e o desempenho mecânico da MLC comparada à madeira maciça, empregando métodos estatísticos para a análise de resistência dos protótipos. Os resultados indicaram que o adesivo foi eficiente na colagem da madeira, de modo que o cisalhamento ocorreu na madeira, além da verificação à flexão ter mostrado comportamento de um corpo único, não tendo pontos de descontinuidade por conta da linha de cola.

ABSTRACT This study was developed with the objective of evaluating the steady-state hydraulic behavior of gate, ball, and pressure valves with nominal diameters of ½” and ¾”, which are widely used in building water supply networks in Brazil. For this purpose, tests were performed to determine the head loss in ten different valves in four openings with five replicates. A hydraulic head loss testing apparatus was set up in a pipeline network that allowed for the control, monitoring, and acquisition of data. Mean values of the K coefficient of the minor head loss and the equivalent length were estimated for the conditions evaluated. The results were analyzed using box plots, correlation, principal components analysis, and hierarchical clustering. In general, the gate valves showed lower head loss for all the relative openings considered, while the pressure valves showed the greatest head loss. Of the clusters formed, for the second group, there was a predominance of treatments with pressure valves, which showed similarity in terms of the values of the hydraulic variables due to the geometry and construction of the valves.

RESUMO Este estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar o comportamento hidráulico em regime permanente de registros de gaveta, esfera e pressão com diâmetros nominais de ½” e ¾”, amplamente utilizados em instalações hidráulicas prediais brasileiras. Para tanto, foram realizados testes para determinar a perda de carga em dez diferentes registros, em quatro aberturas, com cinco repetições. Foi montado um aparato hidráulico de ensaio de perda de carga em uma rede de tubulação que permitiu o controle, monitoramento e aquisição de dados. Foram estimados valores médios do coeficiente K de perda de carga localizada e de comprimento equivalente para as condições avaliadas. Os resultados foram analisados por meio de gráficos box-plot e análises de correlação, componentes principais e agrupamentos hierárquicos. Em geral, os registros de gaveta apresentaram menor perda de carga para todas as aberturas relativas consideradas, enquanto os registros de pressão, as maiores perdas. Dos agrupamentos formados, para o segundo grupo, houve predominância de tratamentos com registros de pressão, que apresentaram similaridade quanto aos valores das variáveis hidráulicas devido à geometria e à construção dos registros.

Abstract The Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger) and the Large-billed Tern (Phaetusa simplex) are two migratory waterbirds that breed simultaneously on many river beaches in South America. Both are polytypic taxa with little information about the distribution and nonbreeding (“wintering”) areas. Based on data from the literature, citizen science websites, fieldwork, and specimens housed in natural history museums, we revised the distribution of some of the main breeding colonies in South America, comparing it with continental rainy cycles to identify generalities about the role of precipitation seasonality on the defining intratropical migration routes of these species. Our data suggest that the seasonal precipitation cycle of South America directly influences the reproductive timing and distribution of both species, which is largely circumscribed by South America’s rivers. After breeding on sandy beaches during the dry season, both species disperse in small groups or even individually - not in large flocks as seen in breeding areas - making it difficult to find general migration patterns during the rainy season. Nonetheless, individuals of both species tend to follow the course of the largest rivers of the continent and even alternative routes to disperse into several areas throughout South America during the nonbreeding season.

Abstract Oral candidiasis is a common fungal infection that affects the oral mucosa, and happens when Candida albicans interacts with bacteria in the oral microbiota, such as Streptococcus mutans, causing severe early childhood caries. C. albicans and S. mutans mixed biofilms are challenging to treat with conventional antimicrobial therapies, thus, new anti-infective drugs are required. Objective This study aimed to test a drug delivery system based on chitosan microparticles loaded with geranium and lemongrass essential oils to inhibit C. albicans and S. mutans mixed biofilms. Methodology Chitosan microparticles loaded with essential oils (CM-EOs) were obtained by spray-drying. Susceptibility of planktonic were performed according CLSI at 4 to 2,048 µg/mL. Mixed biofilms were incubated at 37ºC for 48 h and exposed to CM-EOs at 256 to 4,096 µg/mL. The antimicrobial effect was evaluated using the MTT assay, with biofilm architectural changes analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. RAW 264.7 cell was used to evaluate compound cytotoxicity. Results CM-EOs had better planktonic activity against C. albicans than S. mutans. All samples reduced the metabolic activity of mixed C. albicans and S. mutans biofilms, with encapsulated oils showing better activity than raw chitosan or oils. The microparticles reduced the biofilm on the slides. The essential oils showed cytotoxic effects against RAW 264.7 cells, but encapsulation into chitosan microparticles decreased their toxicity. Conclusion This study demonstrates that chitosan loaded with essential oils may provide an alternative method for treating diseases caused by C. albicans and S. mutans mixed biofilm, such as dental caries.

Abstract Background It is known that around 30% of patients have higher blood pressure (BP) values when examined at the office than at home. Worldwide, only 35% of patients with hypertension undergoing treatment have reached their BP targets. Objective To provide epidemiological data on BP control in the offices of a sample of Brazilian cardiologists, considering office and home BP measurement. Methods This is a cross-sectional analysis of patients with a hypertension diagnosis and undergoing antihypertensive treatment, with controlled BP or not. BP was assayed in the office by a medical professional and at home using home BP monitoring (HBPM). The association between categorical variables was verified using the chi-square test (p<0.05). Results The study included 2540 patients, with a mean age of 59.7 ± 15.2 years. Most patients were women (62%; n=1575). Prevalence rates of 15% (n=382) for uncontrolled white coat hypertension and 10% (n=253) for uncontrolled masked hypertension were observed. The rate of BP control in the office was 56.3% and at home, 61%. Meanwhile, 46.4% of the patients had controlled BP in and outside of the office. Greater control was observed in women and in the 49-61 years age group. Considering the new DBHA 2020 threshold for home BP control, the control rate was 42.4%. Conclusion BP control in the offices of a sample of Brazilian cardiologists was 56.3%; this rate was 61% when BP was measured at home and 46.4% when considering both the office and home.

Resumo Fundamento Sabe-se que em torno de 30% dos pacientes apresentam valores de pressão arterial (PA) mais elevados quando examinados no consultório do que em suas residências. No mundo, admite-se que apenas 35% dos hipertensos já tratados tenham alcançado meta pressórica. Objetivo Fornecer dados epidemiológicos sobre o controle da PA nos consultórios, em uma amostra de cardiologistas brasileiros, avaliado pela medida de consultório e monitorização residencial da pressão arterial (MRPA). Métodos Análise transversal. Observou-se pacientes com diagnóstico de hipertensão arterial, em tratamento anti-hipertensivo, podendo ou não estar com a PA controlada. A PA foi verificada no consultório por profissional médico, e no domicílio através da MRPA. A associação entre variáveis categóricas se deu por meio do teste do qui-quadrado (p < 0,05). Resultados Foram incluídos 2.540 pacientes, com idade média 59,7 ± 15,2 anos. A maioria dos pacientes eram mulheres (62%; n = 1.575). O estudo mostrou uma prevalência de 15% (n = 382) de hipertensão do avental branco não controlada, e 10% (n = 253) de hipertensão mascarada não controlada. A taxa de controle da PA no consultório foi 56,3%, e no domicílio, de 61%; 46,4% dos pacientes tiveram PA controlada no consultório e fora dele. Observou-se maior controle no sexo feminino e na faixa etária 49-61 anos. Observando o controle domiciliar com o novo ponto de corte das Diretrizes Brasileiras de Hipertensão Arterial de 2020, a taxa de controle foi de 42,4%. Conclusão O controle pressórico nos consultórios em uma amostra de cardiologistas brasileiros foi de 56,3%; 61% quando a PA foi obtida no domicílio, e 46,4% quando o controle foi observado tanto no consultório como no domicílio.

Abstract Domestic birds such as Gallus gallus, Meleagris gallopavo, Anser anser and Numida meleagris are widely distributed throughout the world and maintain contact with humans and other animal species considered reservoirs of both Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) and American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL), including dogs and cats; wild canids, marsupials; and synanthropic animals such as rodents and chiroptera. Therefore, this study aimed to detect the presence of anti-Leishmania spp. antibodies in birds from a rural area of the municipality of Santa Maria, southern Brazil. From May to December 2022, 262 blood samples were collected from 244 chickens, 8 turkeys, 7 guinea fowl and 3 geese, distributed in 27 rural properties in 6 districts. All the sites visited presented positive birds for the presence of Leishmania spp. Thus, it is inferred that, contact with this protozoan can induce the production of antibodies, suggesting that these animals can be used as sentinels for the circulation of this agent. In addition, the blood of these animals is a preferred food source for insects of the subfamily Phlebotominae, which can be used them as bioindicators of the presence of these phlebotomes.

Resumo Aves domésticas, como Gallus gallus, Meleagris gallopavo, Anser anser e Numida meleagris, são amplamente distribuídas pelo mundo e mantêm contato com humanos e outras espécies animais consideradas reservatórios tanto da Leishmaniose Visceral (LV) quanto da Leishmaniose Tegumentar Americana (LTA), incluindo-se cães e gatos, canídeos silvestres, marsupiais; e animais sinantrópicos, como roedores e quirópteros. Portanto, este estudo teve como objetivo detectar a presença de anticorpos anti-Leishmania spp. em aves de uma área rural do município de Santa Maria, sul do Brasil. De maio a dezembro de 2022, foram coletadas 262 amostras de sangue de 244 galinhas, 8 perus, 7 pintadas e 3 gansos, distribuídas em 27 propriedades rurais de 6 distritos. Todos os locais visitados apresentaram aves positivas para a presença de Leishmania spp. Assim, infere-se que o contato com esse protozoário pode induzir a produção de anticorpos, sugerindo que esses animais possam ser utilizados como sentinelas para a circulação desse agente. Além disso, o sangue desses animais é uma fonte de alimento preferencial para insetos da subfamília Phlebotominae, que podem ser utilizados como bioindicadores da presença desses flebotomíneos.
