ABSTRACT Lipomas are mesenchymal neoplasms relatively uncommon in the oral cavity. Lipomas can exhibit histopathological features mimicking atypical lipomatous tumors (ALT) or dysplastic lipoma (DL) in the presence of degenerative changes. Relevantly, immunohistochemistry assists in the correct diagnosis. Herein, we present the case of a 54-year-old male with a sessile nodule located on the dorsum of the tongue. The histopathological analysis showed a diffuse, non-circumscribed adipocytic proliferation constituted by cells of variable size containing cytoplasmic vacuoles and displaced nuclei, some resembling lipoblasts supported by fibrous connective tissue stroma. By immunohistochemistry, tumor cells were positive for vimentin, S100, FASN, CD10, and p16. Rb expression was intact. Moreover, CD34, p53, MDM2, and CDK4 were negative. After 2-year of follow-up, no alteration or recurrence was observed. In conclusion, MDM2, CDK4, p53, and Rb immunomarkers can be used reliably to differentiate benign lipoma with degenerative changes from ALT and DL.

ABSTRACT The production chain of the macauba palm (Acrocomia aculeata) includes the cosmetics, food and bioenergy sectors, which highlights the relevance of defining bioclimatically favorable areas for the cultivation of this plant in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the center of its origin. The mesoregions of this state were characterized according to the average annual temperature (AMT), annual precipitation (AP), precipitation in the driest quarter (PDQ), and aridity index (AI), following the Boolean logic. A total of 45.18% of the area of this state is bioclimatically favorable for the cultivation of A. aculeata, which facilitates the planning of farming activities, conservation, and management of this plant in other regions with conditions similar to those observed in this state. This palm can also be cultivated with irrigation in regions with adequate bioclimatic conditions, but without adequate rainfall pattern. This information can boost the rational and sustainable use of A. aculeata for the production of green vegetable oil.

RESUMO A cadeia produtiva da palmeira macaúba (Acrocomia aculeata) inclui os setores de cosméticos, alimentos e bioenergia, aumentando a importância de se definir as áreas bioclimaticamente favoráveis para o cultivo dessa planta no estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil, centro de sua origem. As mesorregiões desse estado foram caracterizadas de acordo com a temperatura média anual (TMA), precipitação anual (PA), precipitação no trimestre mais seco (PTS) e índice de aridez (IA), seguindo a lógica booleana. Um total de 45,18% da área do estado de Minas Gerais é, bioclimaticamente, favorável ao cultivo da A. aculeata, facilitando o planejamento de atividades agropecuárias, conservação e manejo dessa planta. Essa palmeira pode, também, ser cultivada com irrigação em regiões com déficit de precipitação, mas com as outras condições bioclimáticas semelhantes às definidas nesse estado para essa planta. Essas informações aumentam as possibilidades do uso racional e sustentável de A. aculeata para produção de óleo vegetal verde.

ABSTRACT Spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma (SpSCC) is a rare biphasic malignant neoplasm, uncommonly affecting the oral cavity. The SpSCC diagnosis is difficult, especially when it exhibits inconspicuous morphology, inadequate tissue sampling, or association with an exuberant inflammatory reaction. Post-radiotherapy recurrent SpSCC occurring at the same site of conventional SCC is a rare phenomenon. A 59-year-old man was complained of “painful injury on the tongue” with 20 days of duration. He reported smoking and alcohol consumption. Medical history revealed conventional SCC on the tongue treated with surgery and radiotherapy 10 years ago. Intraoral examination showed a polypoid lesion with ulcerated areas, measuring 3 cm in diameter, on the tongue and floor of the mouth, at the same site of previous conventional SCC. The microscopical analysis showed small foci of carcinomatous component admixed with an exuberant inflammatory reaction. Immunohistochemistry highlighted the sarcomatoid component. Both malignant components were positive for EMA, CD138, p40 (deltaNp63), p63, and p53. Moreover, CK AE1/AE3 evidenced the carcinomatous component, whereas vimentin stained the sarcomatoid component. The Ki-67 was >10%. The current case emphasizes the importance of immunohistochemistry in the differential diagnosis of SpSCC from mimics and documents a rare complication of Ionizing Radiation.

RESUMEN La hipercementosis se clasifica como una proliferación no neoplásica que implica un depósito excesivo de cemento a lo largo del cemento radicular normal. Presentamos el caso de un paciente masculino de 77 años que acude al dentista por una lesión supurativa en la encía que evoluciona desde hace varios meses. El examen radiográfico mostró una gran área radiopaca involucrando la raíz del diente 46, que estaba completamente rodeada por un área radiolúcida, sugiriendo un cementoblastoma asociado con el proceso infeccioso. El examen histopatológico del diente afectado reveló hipercementosis extensa asociada con inflamación supurativa crónica, además de osteomielitis crónica localizada. Esta presentación es infrecuente y, debido a los hallazgos clínico-patológicos, se propone el término “hipercementitis crónica”. Los dentistas, especialmente los patólogos orales y endodoncistas, deben estar tener conocimiento de esta inusual presentación para establecer el diagnóstico correcto.

ABSTRACT Squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) is a rare benign neoplasm of the jaw that likely arises from remnants of the dental lamina. It is a slow-growing lesion, with a radiolucent appearance in the central variant. Microscopically, SOT shows islands of squamous epithelium supported by fibrous stroma. In rare cases, squamous odontogenic tumor-like proliferation (SOT-LP) can be observed arising from odontogenic cysts (SOT-LPOC). Herein, we describe the case of a 42-year-old man who presented with discreet bleeding in the maxillary gingiva. Imaging revealed a well-defined, ovoid-shaped lesion with sclerotic margins involving tooth #18 in the intraosseous location. Fine needle aspiration supported the cystic nature of the lesion. After surgery, microscopy revealed a dentigerous cyst showing SOT-LP features. There was no recurrence after a 3-year follow-up. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a dentigerous cyst showing SOT-LP features in the maxilla. Such cysts should be identified to avoid misdiagnosis, with the finding having therapeutic and prognostic implications.

ABSTRACT Lymphoepithelial-like carcinoma (LEC) is a rare malignant neoplasm, which can be associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Histologically, LEC is an undifferentiated carcinoma with an intermixed reactive lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. LEC appears to be an uncommon tumor type of lip carcinoma. An 82-year-old white woman presented a lesion on her lower lip that developed over the last year. The lesion was characterized by ulceration with flat edges, hardened base, painful, and absence of regional lymphadenopathy. Microscopical analysis evidenced an intense inflammatory infiltrate, composed of lymphoplasmacytic cells, associated with scarce pleomorphic epithelial cells. Immunohistochemistry highlighted the LEC cells with strong expression of pan-CK AE1/AE3, EMA, p63, and p53. CD138 was also faintly positive. Ki-67 was >85%. In situ hybridization analysis did not show evidence of EBV. A diagnostic of EBV-negative LEC was made. We present an uncommon type of lip carcinoma, which can represent a diagnostic challenge for clinicians and pathologists.

RESUMO: Anastrepha grandis é uma das principais pragas relacionadas à Cucurbitaceae nas Américas do Sul e Central. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo conhecer o impacto do aumento da temperatura no número de gerações de A. grandis, cuja distribuição poderá ser agravada devido ao aumento da temperatura. Essas variações climatológicas foram analisadas para cenários de referência obtidos de 1961‒1990 e nos cenários de mudanças climáticas A2 e B1 do Painel Intergovernamental de Mudanças Climáticas, onde encontramos um cenário menos pessimista (B1) e um mais pessimista (A2). Em relação ao período de referência é possível observar que, nas estações mais frias, as regiões Sul e Sudeste mostram-se inadequadas para o desenvolvimento de A. grandis, apresentando no máximo uma geração, enquanto nas estações mais quentes o inseto pode chegar a duas gerações. Nas demais regiões do país, onde as temperaturas apresentam-se mais elevadas durante todo o ano, o número de gerações é de no mínimo duas e não há variação de uma estação climática para outra. Quando analisado o aumento da temperatura, em um cenário mais pessimista (A2), é possível observar uma variação considerável no número de gerações nos três cenários climáticos futuros, podendo A. grandis dobrar o número de gerações. Em relação a um cenário menos pessimista (B1), é evidente uma variação menor no número de gerações, principalmente na região Sul do país, enquanto que na região Sudeste essa variação já é mais acentuada devido ao aumento da temperatura, podendo dobrar o número de gerações mesmo nas estações mais frias.

ABSTRACT: Anastrepha grandis is one of the main pests related to Cucurbitaceae in South and Central America. This study discusses the impact of temperature increase on the number of generations of A. grandis, whose distribution could be aggravated due to temperature increase. Climatic variations were analyzed for reference scenarios obtained from 1961‒1990 and of A2 and B1 climatic change scenarios of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in which a less pessimistic scenario (B1) and a more pessimistic scenario (A2) were found. In relation to the reference scenarios, in colder seasons, the southern and southeastern regions are inadequate for the development of A. grandis, presenting one generation at most. In other regions of Brazil, where temperatures are higher throughout the year, the number of generations is at least two, and there is no variation from one climatic season to another. When analyzing the temperature increase, in a more pessimistic scenario (A2), there is a considerable variation in the number of generations, if we take into account three future climate scenarios in which A. grandis practically doubles the number of generations. In relation to a less pessimistic scenario (B1), there is a smaller variation in the number of generations, mainly in the southern region of the country. This variation is more accentuated in southeastern Brazil due to the temperature increase, in which the pest’s number of generations doubles even in colder seasons.

RESUMO O carcinoma cuniculado (CC), uma rara variante do carcinoma espinocelular oral, apresenta células epiteliais neoplásicas bem diferenciadas que se infiltram na submucosa ou no tecido ósseo subjacente, formando a chamada "toca de coelho", preenchida por queratina. Relatamos o caso de uma paciente de 67 anos que foi encaminhada apresentando uma massa tumoral assintomática no corpo mandibular esquerdo com vários meses de evolução. A história prévia indicou exodontia dos dentes 37 e 38 e diagnóstico de osteomielite supurativa crônica. Uma biópsia incisional profunda revelou CC. Devido às características microscópicas, as quais sugeriram um processo inflamatório ou reativo, é necessário estrita correlação clinicopatológica para o correto diagnóstico do CC.

ABSTRACT Carcinoma cuniculatum (CC), a rare variant of oral squamous cell carcinoma, presents well-differentiated neoplastic epithelial cells infiltrating the underlying submucosal or bone tissues, forming the so-called "rabbit burrows" filled with keratin. A 67-year-old female patient was referred complaining of a painless tumoral mass in the left mandibular body, with several months of evolution. Previous history indicated extraction of the teeth #37 and #38 and diagnosis of chronic suppurative osteomyelitis. A deep incisional biopsy revealed CC. Due to its microscopic features, suggesting an inflammatory or reactive process, strict clinicopathological correlation is necessary for the correct diagnosis of CC.

RESUMEN El carcinoma cuniculatum (CC), una variante del carcinoma de células escamosas oral, presenta células epiteliales neoplásicas bien diferenciadas que se infiltran en la submucosa o en el tejido óseo subyacente, formando la llamada "madriguera de conejo", rellenada con queratina. Reportamos el caso de una paciente de 67 años con quejas de una masa tumoral asintomática en el cuerpo mandibular izquierdo con varios meses de evolución. La historia previa apuntó exodoncia de los dientes 37 y 38 y diagnóstico de osteomielitis supurativa crónica. Una biopsia incisional profunda reveló CC. Debido a las características microscópicas, que sugirieron un proceso inflamatorio o reactivo, es necesaria una estrecha correlación clinicopatológica para el diagnóstico correcto del CC.

ABSTRACT Previous ecological studies of dioecious plant species have found that female plants preferentially occur at lower altitudes where there are typically better nutritional conditions, while male plants often occur in less favorable sites. We compared the ecophysiological performance of male and female plants in three populations of the dioecious Baccharis concinna, an endemic species of rupestrian grasslands of Serra do Cipó, in southeastern Brazil. We hypothesized that physiological differences between the sexes would explain the distribution patterns of the populations. Analyses of the tissue content of phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), potassium (K) and sodium (Na), and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes, were used to assess nutritional status and water use efficiency (WUE) in plant leaves, stems and roots of male and female plants in three populations located along an elevational gradient. Differences among populations were related to decreased nutrient levels and WUE at higher elevations, but an effect of sex was found only for %C, with male plants having slightly higher values. In conclusion, the sex ratios in the studied populations of B. concinna could not be attributed to differences in nutrient acquisition and WUE.

RESUMO O cisto ósseo simples, ou cisto ósseo traumático, solitário ou cavidade óssea idiopática é um pseudocisto intra-ósseo descoberto através de um exame radiográfico panorâmico. Comumente, o cisto ósseo simples se apresenta como uma lesão assintomática, radiolúcida, unilocular, sem expansão de corticais, com margens festonando as raízes dentárias vitais da região afetada. A literatura tem recomendado que os aspectos clínicos e radiográficos do cisto ósseo simples são bastante convincentes do seu diagnóstico, portanto a proservação através de exame clínico e radiográfico tem sido sugerida. O presente caso ilustra um caso clínico de um grande cisto ósseo simples, o qual se apresentava multilocular e expansivo, numa criança de 7 anos. Diante da ansiedade dos pais e diagnóstico presuntivo de outras lesões mais agressivas, foi realizada a exploração cirúrgica, a qual confirmou o diagnóstico de cisto ósseo simples. O caso foi acompanhado e, após três anos, foi observada a total remodelação óssea da área afetada. Como conclusão, as lesões radiolúcidas assintomáticas que sugerirem um diagnóstico presuntivo muito indicativo de cisto ósseo simples, podem ser acompanhadas clínica e radiograficamente. Entretanto, as variações de apresentação clínica, como no presente caso clínico, requerem uma confirmação do diagnóstico, a qual é realizada através da exploração cirúrgica. O estabelecimento do diagnóstico torna a condução do caso mais segura para ambos o profissional e o paciente.

ABSTRACT The simple bone cyst,or traumatic bone cyst, solitary or idiopathic bone cavity is an intraosseous pseudocyst discovered through a panoramic radiographic examination. Commonly, the SBC is presented as an asymptomatic lesion, radiolucent, unilocular, without cortical expansion, with margins adorning vital tooth roots of the affected region. The literature has recommended that clinical and radiographic aspects of simple bone cyst are quite convincing as to diagnosis, so follow-up through clinical and radiographic examination has been suggested. This case illustrates an exuberant clinical case of simple bone cyst, which was presented as multilocular and expansive lesion in a 7-year-old patient. Surgical exploration was performed because her parents were anxious about the presumptive diagnosis of other more aggressive lesions. The diagnosis of SBC was confirmed. The case was monitored and, after three years, total bone remodeling of the affected area was observed. In conclusion, asymptomatic radiolucent lesions that suggest a strong presumptive diagnosis of a simple bone cyst can be clinically and radiographically monitored. However, clinical variations, as in the present clinical case, require confirmation of the diagnosis, which is performed through exploratory surgery. The establishment of the diagnosis affords the safest approach for both the professional and the patient.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to manufacture a new zirconia implant (Y-TZP) and to evaluate the fracture strength and stresses generated after cyclic loading compared to titanium implants. Thirty-three zirconia and titanium implants were fabricated. The stress generated around the implants was observed by photoelastic analysis. The implants were then separated into groups (n = 10): Control (no treatment), mechanical fatigue and thermomechanical fatigue. All groups were submitted to a single cantilever flexure test to measure the material fracture strength. The results (2-way ANOVA, Bonferroni test, p <.05) showed no statistically significant difference in the stresses generated between the zirconia and titanium implants. Titanium implants showed higher fracture strength than the zirconia implants, a property that was not altered by fatigue applied. It was concluded that stress distribution was similar for Zr and Ti and mechanical and thermomechanical fatigue had no influence on the fracture strength of the implants tested.

Introdução O hábito de fumar é um fator de risco importante na prevalência, progressão e gravidade das doenças periodontais e parece suprimir a resposta inflamatória marginal no periodonto. Objetivo Correlacionar Índice de Placa visível (IPV) e Índice de Sangramento Gengival (ISG) em fumantes e indivíduos que nunca fumaram, bem como correlacionar ISG e o sangramento à sondagem (SS) nesses dois grupos. Material e método Foram utilizados dados de baseline de um estudo quasi-experimental, no qual 11 pacientes fumantes e 14 indivíduos que nunca fumaram foram submetidos a exames clínicos periodontais no período de setembro de 2010 e outubro de 2011. Resultado A correlação entre IPV e ISG foi positiva para ambos os grupos, sendo forte e estatisticamente significante nos indivíduos que nunca fumaram e moderada nos fumantes. Com relação ao ISG e SS houve moderada correlação para os fumantes e fraca para os indivíduos que nunca fumaram. Conclusão Fumantes apresentam uma correlação entre IPV e ISG de menor força em relação aos indivíduos que nunca fumaram resultando em um sangramento gengival marginal menos pronunciado.

Introduction Smoking is a risk factor for prevalence, severity and progression of periodontal disease and appears to suppress marginal periodontium inflammatory response. Purpose To correlate Visible Plaque Index (VPI) and Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI) in smokers and never-smokers, as well as GBI and bleeding on probing (BOP ) in these groups. Material and method We used baseline data of one quasi-experimental study in which 11 smokers and 14 subjects who never smoked were submitted to clinical periodontal examinations between September 2010 and October 2011. Result The correlation between VPI and GBI was positive for both groups, it was strong and statistically significant in subjects who had never smoked and moderate in smokers. Regarding GBI and BOP correlations were moderate for smokers and weaker for individuals who had never smoked. Conclusion Smokers have lower strength correlation between VPI and GBI compared to individuals who had never smoked resulting in a less pronounced marginal gingival bleeding.

Objetivo Avaliar a cognição em idosos com depressão Maior (DM), doença de Alzheimer (DA) e Depressão na DA. Método Utilizou-se o Mini Mental, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Figura de Rey, Dígitos, Semelhanças, Trail Making A/B, Fluência Verbal e Stroop. ANOVA one-way e modelos multivariados foram utilizados para comparar o desempenho dos grupos. Resultados Foram avaliados 212 sujeitos. Comparado com DM, controles apresentaram desempenho significativamente melhor na atenção, memória de trabalho, velocidade de processamento e evocação. Os controles apresentaram desempenho significativamente superior em todas as avaliações, exceto na atenção comparado com DA. Fluência verbal, memória, velocidade de processamento e raciocínio abstrato na DM foi significativamente maior comparado com DA. DA foi significativamente melhor no estado cognitivo geral comparado a depressão na DA, os outros domínios foram semelhantes. Conclusão Observou-se um gradiente decrescente na cognição dos controles até a Depressão na DA, com os grupos DM e DA com desempenhos intermediários.

Objective To assess cognition in major depressed (MD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and depression in AD elderly. Method Subjects were evaluated by Mini Mental, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Rey Complex Figure, Digit Span, Similarities, Trail Making A/B, Verbal Fluency and Stroop. One-way ANOVA and multivariate models were used to compare the performance of each group on neuropsychological tests. Results We evaluated 212 subjects. Compared to MD, attention, working memory, processing speed and recall showed significantly better in controls. Controls showed significantly higher performance in all cognitive measures, except in attention compared to AD. Verbal fluency, memory, processing speed and abstract reasoning in MD was significantly higher compared to AD. AD was significantly better in general cognitive state than depression in AD. All other cognitive domains were similar. Conclusion A decreasing gradient in cognition appeared from the control to depression in AD, with MD and AD in an intermediate position.
