Abstract The goal of this work is setting out an analysis of the reality of the Xikrin do Cateté indigenous people, focusing on the conflicts with the mining industry in their territory (Carajás Complex). The epistemological approach is grounded on an interdisciplinary analysis, theoretically centered on associating ecological economics and human geography. Methods-wise, we use qualitative research, aiming to understand the conceptual dichotomy between the “banal space” (Milton Santos) and the reality of the “full world” (Herman Daly). We observe that, differently from other historical periods, indigenous people are living surrounded by mining projects, their voices remaining overlooked. Once captured through the perspective of the full world, this territorial configuration is one whereby the indigenous population has no longer any capacity to move, remaining blocked in a region characterised by the most diverse conflicts.

Resumo O presente trabalho possui como escopo uma análise sobre a realidade do povo indígena Xikrin do Cateté, com especial ênfase nos conflitos com a indústria de extração mineira no território (Complexo Carajás). A base epistemológica consiste numa análise interdisciplinar, associando a economia ecológica e a geografia humana. Em termos metodológicos, utilizamos a pesquisa qualitativa, visando compreender a dualidade entre o “espaço banal” (conceito de Milton Santos) e a realidade do “mundo cheio” (Herman Daly). Observamos que, diferentemente de outros períodos históricos, o povo indígena encontra-se cercado por projetos de extração mineira, sendo que as suas vozes são desconsideradas. Ao se pensar na perspetiva do mundo cheio, esta configuração territorial aparece como um cerco, que faz com que essa população deixe de ter a capacidade de deslocamento, ficando numa região que apresenta os mais diversos conflitos.

Abstract A cyclone occurred off the southern Brazilian coast between 30/06/2020 and 01/07/2020, moving eastwards from land towards offshore. The system was registered in numerical models and in-situ observations (buoy and ship) from the day it started until dissipated. The goal of this work is to use the data collected during this extreme environmental condition in a statistical comparison with the atmospheric operational model Global Forecast System (GFS) and a local implementation of the WAVEWATCH III (WW3) wave model, which used the GFS as one of the inputs, to understand the limitations of these models. Initially, the results showed that the system near the southern Brazilian coast was a strong explosive cyclone according to the Sanders and Gyakum (1980) classification. We found that the GFS and WW3 models exhibited greater errors when compared with the buoy data during the 48 h period of explosive weather conditions, while for the GFS model, the greatest errors around the ship occurred after that period. The WW3 errors may be explained by the difference between the buoy and WW3 gridpoint depth and the GFS errors at this location.

Resumo Ocorreu um ciclone na costa sul do Brasil entre 30/06/2020 e 01/07/2020, movendo-se do continente em direção ao mar. O sistema foi registrado em modelos numéricos e observações in-situ (boia e navio) desde o dia em que se formou até se dissipar. O objetivo deste trabalho é utilizar os dados coletados durante essa condição ambiental extrema em uma comparação estatística com o modelo atmosférico operacional Global Forecast System (GFS) e uma implementação local do modelo de ondas WAVEWATCH III (WW3), que utiliza o GFS como um dos inputs, para entender as limitações desses modelos. Inicialmente, os resultados mostraram que o sistema próximo à costa sul do Brasil era um ciclone explosivo forte de acordo com a classificação de Sanders e Gyakum (1980). Descobrimos que os modelos GFS e WW3 apresentaram maiores erros em comparação com os dados da boia durante o período de 48 horas de condições meteorológicas explosivas, enquanto para o modelo GFS, os maiores erros ao redor do navio ocorreram após esse período. Os erros do WW3 podem ser explicados pela diferença entre a profundidade da boia e o ponto da grade do WW3, e os erros do GFS nessa localização.

Abstract This article presents the Brazilian private insurance market’s actuarial life tables, BR- EMS 2021. Using Bayesian inference on the parameters of the Heligman- Pollard law of mortality and data from 23 insurance groups over 15 years, totaling 3.5 billion registers, the data were corrected through a two hidden-layer neural network. The resulting tables show that the insured population exhibits lower mortality rates than the general Brazilian population, even lower than the national populations of well-developed countries such as the USA. Moreover, besides the expected gender gap in mortality rates, there is a clear distance between the death and survivorship insurance coverage groups. Likewise, the insured population characteristics mitigate well-known regional structural discrepancies in the Brazilian population, indicating that being part of the selected population of insured individuals is thus associated with a more effective protection against death than other outstanding factors such as geographic region of residence.

Resumen Este artículo presenta las tablas de vida del mercado de seguros privados brasileño, BR-EMS 2021. Los datos, obtenidos de 23 grupos de seguros a lo largo de 15 años, totalizando 3,5 mil millones de registros, fueron corregidos usando una red neuronal con dos capas ocultas. Mediante la inferencia bayesiana para estimar los parámetros bajo la ley de mortalidad de Heligman-Pollard, las tablas obtenidas muestran que la población asegurada tiene tasas de mortalidad más bajas que la población general brasileña e incluso más bajas que las poblaciones nacionales de países desarrollados, como los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica. Además de la diferencia de género esperada en las tasas de mortalidad, hay una clara distinción entre las tablas de grupos de cobertura de riesgo y cobertura de sobrevivientes. Asimismo, se demuestra que las tablas regionales de población asegurada no presentan las conocidas discrepancias estructurales regionales en Brasil, lo que indica que participar de la población de asegurados está asociado con una protección contra la muerte más efectiva que otros factores como la región geográfica de residencia.

Resumo Este artigo apresenta as tábuas de vida do mercado de seguros privados brasileiro, BR-EMS 2021. Os dados obtidos de 23 grupos seguradores ao longo de 15 anos, totalizando 3,5 bilhões de registros, foram corrigidos por meio de rede neural com duas camadas ocultas. Usando a inferência bayesiana para estimar os parâmetros sob a lei de mortalidade Heligman-Pollard, as tábuas obtidas mostram que a população segurada apresenta probabilidades de morte mais baixas do que a população brasileira em geral e até mesmo em relação a populações nacionais de países desenvolvidos, como os EUA. Além da esperada diferença de gênero nas taxas de mortalidade, há uma clara distância entre as probabilidades de morte dos grupos de cobertura de risco e cobertura de sobrevivência. Da mesma forma, é demonstrado que as tábuas regionais da população segurada não apresentam as discrepâncias regionais conhecidas no Brasil, indicando que fazer parte da população selecionada de segurados está associado a um fator de proteção mais eficaz do que outros fatores, como a região geográfica de residência.

Abstract To analyze the biocompatibility of the scaffold produced from a natural polymer derived from castor oil through hemolytic activity and antimicrobial activity, to enable the clinical application. Three in vitro tests were performed: Hemolytic activity test - Polymer partially dissolved in contact with blood agar; Hemolytic activity test in sheep's blood - Polymer extract with red blood cells solution; Antimicrobial activity test - Solid polymer in direct contact with E. Coli and S. Aureus. For hemolytic tests, none of the samples showed hemolysis. Negative hemolytic activity is a good indicator, as the maintenance of the blood clot in the area of the lesion is essential for the formation of new tissue. For the antimicrobial activity test, no significant activity was observed against the bacteria used. The polymer is not toxic to red blood cells, being viable for clinical application as a matrix for tissue regeneration.

BACKGROUND Leprosy, caused by Mycobacterium leprae, is a public health problem in Brazil that affects peripheral nerves, resulting in physical disabilities. During host-pathogen interactions, the immune response determines leprosy outcomes from a localised (paucibacillary) form to a disseminated (multibacillary) form. The recognition of M. leprae involves the DC-SIGN receptor, which is present on the dendritic cells (DCs) and participates in immune activation. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the association of polymorphisms in the promoter region of the gene encoding DC-SIGN (CD209) and the clinical form of leprosy, and to investigate its functional effects. METHODS The study population included 406 leprosy patients from an endemic area in Brazil [310 multibacillary (MB); 96 paucibacillary (PB)]. A functional evaluation based on the effects of the single nucleotide variant (SNV) associated with PB leprosy on the specific immune response was also performed. RESULTS The GA genotype and the presence of the A allele of rs735240 (-939G>A) were associated with PB leprosy [OR: 2.09 (1.18-3.69) and 1.84 (1.07-3.14), respectively]. Carriers of the A allele showed reduced expression of CD209 and TGF-β1 in leprosy lesions in comparison with individuals with GG genotype, in addition to a higher response to the Mitsuda test. CONCLUSION These data suggest that rs735240 influences the immune response against M. leprae and clinical presentation of leprosy.

ABSTRACT For soccer managers, player selection lineups are a key process for better performance, both on financial and sports matters. However, to determine a quality solution to this problem it becomes more complex, as the number of alternatives and criteria increases and the number of viable solutions grows ex ponentially. This paper proposes a multicriteria method with genetic algorithm for the evaluation of soccer teams based on Brazilian Championship data. A team complementation percentage was calculated con sidering a total of 322 athletes and 18 criteria. The results presented a 3-6-1 format as the ideal for this case study, obtaining a team complementation value of 43.04%. The method adaptability for the decision-maker is highlighted, showing it was possible to determinate the most complementary team according to the desired tactical formation and importance attributed for each criterion.

Abstract Agriculture needs methodologies that assist in the determination of soil attributes and variability mapping attributes with greater levels of detail. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate magnetic susceptibility as auxiliary variable for estimating soil attributes in areas of Indian Black Earths in the south of Amazonas State. Three Indian Black Earth areas are located in the municipalities of Apuí and Manicoré - Amazonas, under uses with coffee, cocoa and pasture. The soils were collected at the crossing points in the depth of 0.00 - 0.20 m, making a total of 88 sampling points/area, and totaling 264 samples. The points were georeferenced for geostatistical modeling. After that, physical and chemical analyzes were performed to obtain the values of soil and magnetic susceptibility attributes. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, linear regression and geostatistical analyzes were applied for Pedotransfer Function modeling and the spatial variability of the analyzed attributes. Magnetic susceptibility showed a high degree of spatial dependence in the study areas, high range values, correlating with most of the assessed attributes, mainly physical, indicating potential in the prediction of the attributes in these environments. Pedotransfer functions vary among IBE’s sites in attribute prediction, ensuring moderate estimates for predicting soil attributes in IBE’s areas.

RESUMO: O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar índices de vegetação (IV) para detecção do status nutricional do milho com relação ao nitrogênio e potássio por meio de imagens aéreas obtidas por câmera RGB embarcada em veículo aéreo não tripulado. As imagens foram adquiridas em ensaio de níveis de nitrogênio (0, 60, 120 e 180 kg ha-1) e potássio (0, 50, 100 e 150 kg ha-1), em blocos ao acaso, fatorial 4 x 4, com três repetições. Coletaram-se dez folhas por parcela na fase de florescimento para avaliação do teor foliar de N total (NF) e K+. Efetuou-se análise de correlação de Pearson, análise de variância e de regressão entre os IV e os níveis de N e de K2O. NF, K+ e a produtividade de grãos responderam apenas aos níveis de N no solo. Houve correlação significativa para os índices Excess Red Index, Normalized Difference Index e Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index com o NF, que os credencia como promissores na detecção do status nutricional do milho em relação ao N. Nenhum dos índices avaliados foi capaz de detectar o status nutricional do milho com relação ao potássio.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study is to determine the vegetation indices (IV) as a means of identifying the nutritional status of corn, with respect to the soil nitrogen and potassium, using the aerial images received through an RGB camera loaded on an unmanned aerial vehicle. The images were obtained for an experiment of the nitrogen levels (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha-1) and potassium levels (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1), in the random block design, with a factorial scheme of 4 x 4, having three repetitions. Ten leaves were plucked per plot during the flowering phase to assess the total N (NF) and K+ leaf contents. The Pearson’s correlation analysis, as well as the analyses of variance and regression between the IV and the concentrations of N and K2O. NF, K+ and the grain yield, responded only to the soil N levels. A significant correlation was observed for the indices of Red Index, Normalized Difference Index and Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index with the NF, which endorses them as favorable in identifying the nutritional standing of corn, with respect to the N level. Not even a single one of the indices evaluated could detect the nutritional ranking of corn in the context of the potassium level.

Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a dinâmica da estrutura de espécies arbóreas e relacionar as mudanças com as condições edáficas em fitofisionomias de cerrado stricto sensu (de 2010 a 2015), cerradão (de 2010 a 2015) e floresta estacional semidecidual (de 2011 a 2015) em Curvelo, Minas Gerais. O inventário florestal considerou amostragens do tipo sistemática em 15 unidades amostrais de 20 × 50 metros no cerrado stricto sensu (CSS), 10 unidades amostrais 20 × 50m no cerradão (CD), CAS ≥ 15,7cm) e 25 unidades amostrais de 10 × 40m na floresta estacional semidecidual (FES - CAP ≥ 15,7 cm). Amostras de solo foram coletadas em todas as unidades amostrais para caracterização química e granulométrica. Nas três fitofisionomias, o número de indivíduos ingressantes foi inferior ao de egressos. No CSS, a área basal no inventário final foi superior à área basal inicial (23,675 - 25,845m2/ha), devido ao incremento expressivo dos sobreviventes. Ocorreram reduções na área basal no CD (19,322 - 17,008 m2/ha) e na FES (28,183 - 28,148 m2/ha), decorrente da alta taxa de mortalidade. Nas três fitofisionomias, a mortalidade foi maior nas primeiras classes diamétricas. De forma lenta, o CSS e CD estão se recuperando pós-distúrbio (fogo), estão surgindo novos indivíduos (recrutas) e crescimento diamétrico dos sobreviventes. Durante o intervalo de 5 anos, não foi possível identificar a recuperação do número de indivíduos, enquanto a FES sem distúrbio do fogo, a perda de indivíduos pela mortalidade e a inclusão de novos indivíduos pelo recrutamento foram mais equilibradas.

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the structural dynamics of tree species and to relate changes with edaphic conditions in the phytophysiognomies of cerrado stricto sensu (from 2010 to 2015), cerradão (from 2010 to 2015) and seasonal semideciduous forest (from 2011 to 2015) in Curvelo, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Forest inventories involved systematic sampling in 15 sample units (20 × 50m) in cerrado strict sensu (CSS), 10 sample units (20 × 50m) in cerradão (CD; CAS ≥ 15.7 cm) and 25 sample units (10 × 40m) in semideciduous seasonal forest (SSF; CAP ≥ 15.7 cm). Soil samples were collected in all sample units for the chemical and granulometric characterization. The number of individuals entering was lower than the total recruitment in all phytophysiognomies. Basal area in the final inventory of CSS was higher than initial basal area (23.675 - 25.845m2/ha), due to a significant increase in the surviving individuals. There were reductions in the basal area for DC (19.322 - 17.008 m2/ha) and SSF (28.183 - 28.148 m2/ha), due to high mortality rates. The mortality was higher for the first diametric classes in all three phytophysiognomies. Individual recruitment and diametric growth of survivors during post fire disturbance recovery was slow for CSS and CD. The number of individuals recovering during a 5-year interval could not be determined, however, without fire disturbance, the loss of individuals due to mortality and the recruitment of new individuals in FES were more balanced.

RESUMO O feijão-caupi é uma leguminosa de grande importância socioeconômica para as regiões Norte e Nordeste do Brasil. Entretanto, ainda necessita de mais estudos que avaliem seu desempenho produtivo quando cultivado em regime irrigado e sob diferentes densidades de plantas. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar os efeitos de diferentes regimes hídricos e densidades de plantas na produtividade de grãos, componentes de produção e eficiência do uso de água, bem como a correlação da produtividade de grãos com os componentes de produção da cultivar de feijão-caupi BRS Tumucumaque. O experimento foi conduzido na área experimental da Embrapa Meio-Norte, Teresina, Piauí, de junho a setembro de 2017, em um Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo eutrófico. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos casualizados, sob esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições, em que os regimes hídricos ocuparam as parcelas (187,7; 233,5; 263,5 e 288,7 mm) e as densidades de plantas, as subparcelas (12; 16; 20 e 24 plantas m-2). Foram avaliados o número de vagens por planta, o número de vagens por metro quadrado, o comprimento de vagens, a produtividade de grãos secos e a eficiência de uso da água. A máxima produtividade de grãos foi de 1.694,46 kg ha-1 com aplicação da lâmina de 288,7 mm e a densidade de 20,4 plantas m-2. O componente de produção número de vagens por metro quadrado foi o que mais se correlacionou com a produtividade de grãos.

ABSTRACT Cowpea is a legume of great socioeconomic importance for the North and Northeast regions of Brazil. However, studies to evaluate its production performance when cultivated under irrigated regime and under different plant densities are necessary. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of different water regimes and different plant densities on grain yield, production components and water use efficiency, and on the correlation between grain yield and production components of BRS Tumucumaque cowpea cultivar. The experiment was carried out at Embrapa Meio-Norte experimental area, in Teresina, Piauí State, Brazil, from June to September 2017, in an Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo eutrófico (Ultisol). A randomized complete block design was used, in a split-plot scheme with four replicates, in which the water regimes occupied the plots (187.7; 233.5; 263.5 and 288.7 mm) and plant densities, the subplots (12; 16; 20 and 24 plants m-2). The number of pods per plant, number of pods per square meter, pod length, dry grain yield and water use efficiency were evaluated. The maximum dry grain yield reached was 1,694.46 kg ha-1, with application of 288.7 mm and density of 20.4 plants m-2. The production component number of pods per square meter was the most correlated with dry grain yield.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the depth of cure of conventional (Filtek Z350 and Esthet-X HD) and bulk fill resins composites (Filtek bulk fill flow and SDR) using different photoactivation methods. Samples were made using five disc-shaped matrices (1 mm high and 8 mm central diameter) with interposed polyester strips. The samples were photoactivated using different methods [continuous high-irradiance light (LCA), continuous low-irradiance light (LCB), and soft-start (SS)], maintaining 24 J/cm2 radiant exposure. After 24h, Knoop microhardness test was performed at 5 depths (surface, 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm). The Knoop microhardness were analyzed by ANOVA two-way and Tukey’s test (5%). Conventional resins presented the highest results up to 2 mm depth, except for Esthet-X photoactived by LCB, which showed significant lower Knoop hardness from 2 mm depth. Bulk fill resins photoactivated with LCA and SS had the highest results in 4 mm depth. The LCA and SS photoactivation methods produce suitable photoactivation in conventional composites up to 2 mm and bulk fill up to 4 mm depth and the bulk fill composites present higher polymerization depth than conventional composites.

RESUMO A indústria da cerâmica de argila compreende materiais empregados na construção civil (tijolos, telhas, argila expandida, entre outros), é de grande importância para o desenvolvimento econômico brasileiro, e busca novas fontes de matéria-prima, principalmente argila. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo caracterizar uma jazida de argila localizada na região central do estado do Piauí, para viabilizar seu uso como matéria-prima cerâmica, buscando impulsionar a indústria de cerâmica de argila. A composição química, as fases cristalinas e a plasticidade da argila foram analisadas. As amostras foram preparadas por prensagem uniaxial, secas em estufa a 110 °C e depois queimadas a 900 °C, 1000 °C e 1100 °C. Determinou-se então a resistência à flexão, porosidade aparente, retração linear, absorção de água, além de análise mineralógica, macroestrutural e microestrutural. Os resultados mostraram uma melhora nos índices com o aumento da temperatura de queima e que as amostras apresentaram coloração avermelhada devido à presença de ferro, bem como quartzo e caulinita. Assim, o depósito de argila tem potencial para se transformar em matéria-prima para a indústria de cerâmica de argila no estado do Piauí.

ABSTRACT The clay ceramics industry comprises materials used in construction (bricks, tiles, and expanded clay, among others), is of great importance for Brazilian economic development, and the industry is seeking new sources of raw material, mainly clay. The present work aims to characterize a clay deposit located in the central region of the state of Piauí, to make feasible its use as ceramic raw material, seeking to boost the clay ceramics industry. The chemical composition, the crystalline phases, and the plasticity of the clay were analyzed. Specimens were prepared by uniaxial pressing, dried in an oven at 110 °C, and then heated to 900 °C, 1000 °C, and 1100 °C. Bending strength, apparent porosity, linear shrinkage, water absorption, and mineralogical, macrostructural, and microstructural analyses were determined. The results showed an improvement in the indices with the increase in the firing temperature and that the samples showed a reddish coloration due to the presence of iron, as well as quartz and kaolinite. Thus, the clay deposit has the potential to become raw material for the clay ceramics industry in the state of Piauí.

RESUMO A indústria da cerâmica vermelha compreende materiais empregados na construção civil (tijolos, telhas, argila expandida, entre outros) e tem grande importância para o desenvolvimento econômico brasileiro, assim tem crescido a procura por seus produtos, causando um problema de escassez de reservas de matérias-primas de boa qualidade e em locais economicamente adequados. Outros materiais também utilizados na construção civil, como o granito (principal produto da indústria de rochas ornamentais) e gesso de revestimento tem apresentado crescimento em sua demanda, gerando, em seu processo de beneficiamento, grande quantidade de resíduos, provocando impacto negativo ao meio ambiente. A reciclagem de resíduos está cada vez mais em evidência em razão do grande volume gerado pelo setor. A indústria de cerâmica vermelha, por sua característica heterogênea, tem se destacado na incorporação de resíduos, tanto por apresentar vantagens, quanto pelo maior rigor das leis atuais. Assim, este trabalho tem por finalidade expor uma visão geral sobre os efeitos da utilização dos resíduos industriais, gesso e granito, em indústria de cerâmica vermelha, apresentando também resultados de trabalhos executados nesta área. Os resultados apontam quantidade escassa de pesquisas na área de reciclagem de resíduos de gesso e granito, e que a utilização dos mesmos em massa cerâmica está em conformidade com a legislação vigente e ainda contribui para a redução dos impactos negativos causados ao meio ambiente devido ao seu descarte em locais indevidos.

ABSTRACT The red ceramics industry comprises materials used in construction (bricks, tiles, expanded clay, among others) and is of great importance for Brazilian economic development, so the demand for its products has grown, causing a problem of scarcity of reserves of good quality raw materials and in economically appropriate places. Other materials also used in construction, such as granite (main product of the ornamental stone industry) and gypsum coating have shown growth in their demand, generating large amounts of waste, causing negative impact on the environment. The recycling of waste is increasingly evident due to the large volume generated by the sector. The red ceramic industry, due to its heterogeneous character, has been prominent in the incorporation of waste, as much to present advantages as the greater rigor of the current laws. The purpose of this work is to present an overview of the effects of the use of industrial waste, gypsum and granite, in the red ceramic industry, and also presents results of work carried out in this area. The results point to a scarce amount of research in the area of waste recycling of gypsum and granite, and that their use in ceramic mass complies with current legislation and also contributes to the reduction of negative impacts caused to the environment due to its disposal in undue places.

RESUMO Em cultivos consorciados, uma alta densidade de plantas pode retardar o acúmulo de biomassa e afetar a disponibilidade hídrica às plantas. Objetivou-se avaliar a dinâmica da água no solo e o desempenho produtivo no consórcio de milho e Brachiaria ruziziensis sob diferentes densidades de semeadura desta forrageira. O experimento foi conduzido em blocos casualizados, com tratamentos associados às densidades de semeadura (2 kg ha-1, 4 kg ha-1, 6 kg ha-1 e 8 kg ha-1) e ambas as espécies em monocultivo como testemunhas. No milho, avaliou-se a produtividade de grãos e, na braquiária, o número de plantas por hectare e as massas verde e seca da parte aérea. O desempenho do consórcio foi avaliado pelo índice de uso eficiente da terra. A dinâmica da água no solo foi monitorada em duas profundidades (0-0,3 m e 0,3-0,6 m), pela técnica de reflectometria no domínio do tempo. A avaliação do armazenamento de água no solo foi realizada a partir de parcelas com quatro dos sistemas de cultivo (milho ou braquiária em monocultivo, e consórcios com as densidades de semeadura extremas), em quatro períodos. O aumento na densidade de semeadura de B. ruziziensis diminuiu a produtividade dos grãos do milho consorciado em 30,8 %. O consórcio usando 2 kg ha-1 de sementes da forrageira proporcionou melhor eficiência no uso da terra (23 %). Ademais, os tratamentos com consórcio promoveram maior extração de água do solo, especialmente nas fases de maior exigência hídrica do milho (e.g., florescimento e enchimento de grãos). Estes sistemas simulam a extração de água em maiores profundidades, quando comparados ao milho em cultivo solteiro.

ABSTRACT In intercropping systems, a high plant density can delay the biomass accumulation and affect the water availability to plants. This study aimed to evaluate the soil water dynamics and the crop yield performance in maize and Brachiaria ruziziensis intercropping under different sowing densities of the forage grass. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, with treatments associated to the sowing densities (2 kg ha-1, 4 kg ha-1, 6 kg ha-1 and 8 kg ha-1) and the single cropping for both species as controls. The maize plants were evaluated for grain yield and B. ruziziensis for number of plants per hectare and shoot fresh and dry matter. The intercropping performance was evaluated using the land-use efficiency index. The soil water dynamics was monitored in two soil depths (0-0.3 m and 0.3-0.6 m) by using the time domain reflectometry method. The evaluation of soil water storage was carried out from plots with four of the crop systems (single maize or B. ruziziensis, and intercropping with the extreme sowing densities), at four different times. The increase in the sowing density of B. ruziziensis decreased the grain yield of the intercropped maize by 30.8 %. The intercropping system using 2 kg ha-1 of the grass seeds resulted in the best land-use efficiency (23 %). In addition, the intercropping treatments promoted a higher extraction of water from the soil, mainly at the maize growth stages with higher hydric demand (e.g., flowering and grain filling). These systems stimulate the extraction of water from deeper soil layers, when compared to maize in single cropping.

Abstract: Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) are interesting materials for coatings when compared to solvent-based polyurethanes, once that reducing the concentration of volatile organic compounds that are harmful for human health and the environment. However, the WPU has low weathering resistance. In order to improve this behavior among others properties, inorganic fillers has been added in these systems. SiO2 particles from various sources, mainly, from agro-industrial waste, as rice husk has attracted the scientific and technological interest. In this study, the accelerated weathering essay was performed in waterborne polyurethane (WPU)/ silica (from rice husk ash) composites in order to evaluate the thermal and physical changes in these materials. These composites were prepared by two distinct methods: in situ polymerization and blending method. The highest resistance to thermal degradation and to accelerated weathering was reached with WPU/silica composites obtained by blending method due the interactions between SiO2 particles and the polymer matrices. Blending method for preparation WPU/silica composites proved to be a simpler and faster method, with no drawback for large scale application.
