Avaliou-se a influência do nitrogênio no crescimento e nas características morfológicas e nutricionais de Passiflora suberosa L. e as conseqüências no desempenho larval e oviposição de Heliconius erato phyllis (Fabricius). Foram utilizados três níveis de nitrogênio no solo (tratamentos) para o cultivo de P. suberosa: 0, 150 e 300 mg L-1. Larvas recém-eclodidas foram criadas em laboratório (25 ± 1ºC), individualmente, em ramos das plantas cultivadas em cada tratamento e fêmeas capturadas em campo foram submetidas a testes de escolha para oviposição. A taxa de crescimento, a área foliar e o comprimento dos internódios de P. suberosa aumentaram significativamente com a adição de nitrogênio. A dureza das folhas jovens nas plantas cultivadas sem adição de nitrogênio foi maior, as quais também apresentaram menor conteúdo de água. Houve maior concentração de nitrogênio e potássio nas plantas cultivadas com a adição de nitrogênio no solo. A qualidade nutricional do alimento expressa pela maior concentração de nitrogênio e água, diminuiu o tempo de desenvolvimento larval e aumentou o tamanho dos adultos, embora não tenha afetado a sobrevivência de forma significativa. As fêmeas escolheram os ramos das plantas fertilizadas para oviposição, o que foi positivamente relacionado com desempenho das larvas. Isto poderia explicar a manutenção desse comportamento, bem como a escolha por ramos maiores, registrado em estudos anteriores.

The present study examines the influence of nitrogen on growth rates, morphological and nutritional characteristics of Passiflora suberosa L., and the corresponding consequences for Heliconius erato phyllis (Fabricius) growth and oviposition. The treatments consisted of different nitrogen doses (0, 150 and 300 mg L-1) applied to the soil. Newly emerged larvae were individually reared in the laboratory (25 ± 1ºC) on branches of P. suberosa obtained from plants grown under the three nitrogen levels, and field collected females were submitted to oviposition choice tests. P. suberosa growth rates, leaf area and internode length increased significantly when grown with nitrogen enriched soil. P. suberosa presented significantly greater leaf toughness when grown without nitrogen addition. Leaves of this species also presented lower water content and toughness. Nitrogen addition increased the concentration of nitrogen and potassium on plant leaf tissues. The greater nitrogen concentration on plants did not affect H. erato phyllis larval survival, but led to a reduction in larval development time and increased adult size. Females significantly preferred to lay eggs in plants cultivated in nitrogen enriched soil. This choice was positively correlated with larval performance, which could be a possible explanation for the maintenance of that behaviour, as well as the choice of larger branches as reported in previous studies.

Há restrições ao crescimento de plantas em condições de inundação do solo, o que limita a sua exploração agrícola a poucas espécies. A soja pode ser uma alternativa, pela alta capacidade adaptativa a estas condições. O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar as formas de adaptação da soja à inundação do solo, e estabelecer a melhor estratégia para fornecimento de N em solos inundados. Foi conduzido um experimento em casa de vegetação, na Faculdade de Agronomia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), de setembro a novembro de 1998. Foram testadas duas cultivares de soja (FT-Abyara e BR 4) cultivadas sob dois regimes hídricos (inundação e capacidade de campo) e duas estratégias de fornecimento de N (inoculação e N mineral). Manteve-se a soja sob inundação do estádio V2 até V5 (21 dias). A soja apresentou mecanismos que permitem sua adaptação a condições de hipoxia geradas pela inundação do solo. Houve redução nos teores de N, K, Mg e Mn, e aumento nos teores de Fe nas folhas, quando da inundação. Existiram diferenças entre cultivares em solo inundado, destacando-se a cultivar FT-Abyara, pela maior adaptação. O diâmetro do caule sob a lâmina de água foi a característica mais importante na diferenciação de cultivares com vistas a tolerância à inundação. A melhor estratégia para fornecimento de N em condições de solo inundado foi a aplicação de N mineral em cobertura. Porém, mesmo em solo inundado ocorreu nodulação em soja.

There are restrictions to the growth of plants in flooded soils, and this limits their agricultural exploration to few species. Soybean is becoming an alternative, due to its high adaptation capacity to these conditions. The objective of this work was to identify the forms of adaptation of soybean in flooded soils, and to establish the best strategy for supplying N in flooded conditions. An experiment was carried out in greenhouse in the Faculdade de Agronomia of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), in Brazil, from September to November 1998. Two cultivars of soybean (FT-Abyara and BR 4) grown under two humidity conditions (flooded soil and field capacity) and two strategies for supplying nitrogen (inoculation and mineral N) were tested. The soybean stayed under flood from stadium V2 to V5 (21 days). Soybean presented mechanisms (stem base hypertrophy and adventitious roots with aerenchyma), that allowed its adaptation to hypoxia conditions under flooded soil. There was reduction in the levels of N, K, Mg and Mn and increase in the level of Fe in the leaves when flooded. Differences existed between cultivars under flooded soil; cultivar FT-Abyara was the best adapted. Stem diameter under flooded conditions was the most important characteristic in the differentiation of cultivars for tolerance to flooding. The best strategy for supplying N in conditions of flooded soil was the application of mineral N in covering. Even under flood, nodulation in soybean happened.
