RESUMO Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo caracterizar o efeito da reabilitação vestibular (RV) sobre o ganho do reflexo vestíbulo-ocular (RVO), a ocorrência das sacadas compensatórias, bem como sobre o equilíbrio corporal e a qualidade de vida, em três pacientes com hipofunção vestibular periférica. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo. Participaram da pesquisa três pacientes do gênero feminino, duas com 55 anos e uma com 67 anos, com diagnóstico médico de disfunção vestibular periférica. As participantes foram submetidas à anamnese, questionário Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), avaliação clínica do equilíbrio corporal e ao Vídeo Teste do Impulso Cefálico (vHIT), pré e após RV. A RV foi aplicada de forma personalizada, baseada no protocolo de Cawthorne e Cooksey, associada a estímulos de realidade virtual. Após a RV, observou-se a redução da média do escore total do DHI, sugestivo da diminuição na restrição de participação. Na avaliação clínica do equilíbrio obtiveram-se resultados dentro da normalidade para as provas alteradas, pré RV. Quanto ao vHIT, constatou-se aumento do ganho do RVO para os canais semicirculares anteriormente afetados, condizente com padrões de normalidade, e extinção ou diminuição de ocorrência das sacadas compensatórias, nos três casos avaliados. O aumento do ganho do RVO e a extinção ou redução das sacadas compensatórias, após a RV, evidenciam sinais sugestivos de compensação vestibular. Esses resultados mostraram-se compatíveis com o aumento da estabilidade postural e menor restrição da qualidade de vida. Os achados, em conjunto, demonstram o benefício proporcionado pela RV nos três casos avaliados.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to characterize the vestibular rehabilitation (VR), vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain, the occurrence of compensatory saccades, the static and dynamic balance, and the impact on quality of life in three patients with peripheral vestibular hypofunction. This is a descriptive study, approved by the ethics in research committee, under number 4,462.519. Three female patients participated in the study, two aged 55 and one aged 67, with a medical diagnosis of peripheral vestibular dysfunction. The participants underwent anamnesis, Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) questionnaire, clinical assessment of postural balance and Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT), pre and post VR. The VR was applied in a personalized manner, based on the Cawthorne and Cooksey protocol, associated with virtual reality stimuli. After VR, a reduction in the total score average of DHI was observed, suggesting a decrease in participation restriction. The clinical balance assessment results were within the normal range for the altered tests, pre VR. In the three evaluated cases, vHIT showed increased RVO gain for the previously affected semicircular ducts (SCDs), compatible with normality standards, and reduction or extinction in the occurrence of compensatory saccades. The increase in VOR gain and the reduction or suppression of compensatory saccades after VR are suggestive signs of vestibular compensation. These results were compatible with increased postural stability and less restricted quality of life. These findings demonstrate the benefit provided by VR in the three evaluated cases.

RESUMO: A hipertensão pulmonar (HP) em cães é uma síndrome que pode ocorrer secundária às diversas causas, dentre elas, a doença cardíaca esquerda (pós-capilar) e a doença respiratória crônica (pré-capilar). Essa é uma condição importante que motivou os objetivos do estudo: avaliar ecocardiograficamente as consequências morfológicas e funcionais no ventrículo direito (VD) dos cães acometidos com HP pré- e pós-capilar, considerando também o estágio de severidade da HP (leve, moderada ou severa). A ecocardiografia foi realizada em 66 cães de diversas raças e pesos, com pelo menos quatro anos de idade, que compuseram um grupo com doença valvar mitral, ou endocardiose, outro com doença respiratória crônica (bronquite, colapso de traqueia e neoplasia pulmonar primária ou metástase), e por último, um grupo saudável. Os parâmetros para a morfologia do VD foram RV1, RV2 e RV3 na sístole e na diástole. Para a avaliação da função sistólica do VD foram mensurados: excursão sistólica do plano anular tricúspide (TAPSE), TAPSE:Ao (aorta), velocidade máxima da onda sistólica da tricúspide obtida pelo doppler tecidual (S’), S’:Ao, área do ventrículo direito no final da diástole (RVEDA); RVEDA:BSA (body superficie area); integral tempo velocidade (FVI) e FVI:Ao. As variáveis foram avaliadas por meio da ANOVA. Os resultados mostraram que RV3d, RV1s, S’:Ao, S’ e FVI foram capazes de distinguir casos de HP pré e pós-capilar neste estudo. Observou-se que há remodelamento do VD de cães com HP e este pode ser influenciado pela origem pré ou pós-capilar da HP, encontrando-se dilatado em cães com HP pós capilar e com HP severa. Os resultados para a função sistólica do VD foram similares, uma vez que o FVI e FVI:Ao mostraram que a capacidade de ejeção do VD está reduzida nos cães com HP pós-capilar e com HP severa.

ABSTRACT: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) in dogs is a syndrome that can occur secondary to several causes, including left heart disease (postcapillary) and chronic respiratory disease (precapillary). This study evaluates morphological and functional consequences in the right ventricle (RV) of dogs with pre- and postcapillary PH through echocardiography, and also considers the severity of PH (mild, moderate or severe). Echocardiography was performed on 66 dogs of various breeds and weights (age >3 years old) which were assigned to three groups: postcapillary PH, which included mitral valve disease/endocardiosis, precapillary PH, which included chronic respiratory diseases (bronchitis, collapse of the trachea and primary lung cancer or metastasis), and finally, a healthy group of controls. The parameters for RV morphology were RV1, RV2, and RV3 for systole and diastole. The following measurements were used to assess RV systolic function: tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), TAPSE:Ao (aorta), maximum velocity of the tricuspid systolic wave obtained by tissue Doppler (S’), S’:Ao, right ventricle end-diastolic area (RVEDA); RVEDA:BSA (body surface area); flow velocity integral (FVI) and FVI:Ao. The variables were assessed using ANOVA. The results showed that RV3d, RV1s, S’:Ao, S’, and FVI were able to distinguish cases of pre- and postcapillary PH in this study. Remodeling of the RV of dogs with PH was observed, which can be influenced by the pre- or postcapillary origin of the PH, with dilation in dogs with postcapillary PH and severe PH. The results for RV systolic function were similar, with FVI and FVI:Ao showing that RV ejection function is reduced in dogs with postcapillary PH and with severe PH.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: This study analyzed the performance of the Kato Katz technique in detecting intestinal schistosomiasis in the State of Pará. METHODS: Of three stool samples provided by each of 380 participants, a total of 16 Kato Katz slides were examined to define the reference value (RV) of positives for comparisons. RESULTS: The RV revealed 37 (9.7%) infected participants in contrast to 10 (2.6%) according to a single slide. CONCLUSIONS: This significant underestimation of the infection rate gives reason to discuss if the current classification of prevalence levels reflects the real situation, principally in low transmission areas, like the Amazon region.

ABSTRACT This study aimed at determining the clinical and pathological effects of the coinfection of young SPF chickens with chicken anemia virus (CAV) and Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) vaccine strains. The clinical signs, gross and microscopic lesions were determined after the experimental coinfection broilers with a CAV genotype 1 vaccine strain given intraperitoneally on the first day of age and a MG F-strain vaccine given intranasally on the 8th day of age. The experimental groups included the negative control (group 1), a group infected with the MG F-strain vaccine (group 2), and a group coinfected with CAV and MG vaccines (group 3). Chicks were examined clinically and post mortem at 23 days of age, and gross and microscopic lesions of the trachea, thymus, and air sacs were compared among treatments (Kruskal-Wallis test). Infections were confirmed by PCR for specific genetic fragments of each agent in the target tissues. Mortality was only observed in chicks on group 3, with two deaths and more severe lesions in the trachea, thymus and air sacs compared with groups 1 and 2 (p< 0.01). Dead chicks presented reduced thymus and spleen size, hemorrhagic trachea with catarrhal exudate and partial obstruction, pericarditis, catarrhal airsacculitis, lungs with liquid and ascites. The surviving chicks in group 3 showed more severe respiratory changes than those in group 2, in addition to thymus and spleen size reduction. Results indicate the adverse effects of the coinfection of young chickens with MG F-strain and CAV genotype 1 vaccines.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: The benefit of a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program for patients with Chagas heart failure (CHF) remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of CR for CHF patients. METHODS: A single-arm pilot study, including 12 patients with CHF, was performed. Patients participated in an 8-month physical exercise intervention, comprising aerobic, strength, and stretching exercises (3 times per week, 60 minutes per session). Nutritional and pharmaceutical counseling were also performed. Functional capacity (cardiopulmonary exercise test), muscle respiratory strength (manovacuometry), and body composition (anthropometry and skinfolds) were evaluated at baseline, and after 4 and 8 months of intervention. Cardiac function (echocardiography), biomarkers (lipid profile, glucose, and glycated hemoglobin) and quality of life (Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire) were assessed at baseline and at the end of the intervention. RESULTS: Seven of 12 patients included in the study completed the 8-month follow-up period. Only 2 moderate adverse events occurred during the exercise training. Functional capacity improved after 4 months of CR, while left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and respiratory strength improved after 8 months. Patients with right ventricular (RV) dysfunction at baseline exhibited an improvement in functional capacity after 4 months, and improvements in left ventricular (LV) diastolic pressure, respiratory strength, and quality of life at the end of follow-up. Conversely, those with normal baseline RV function demonstrated LVEF increases that were not observed in patients with RV dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS: CR was feasible, safe, and has important clinical benefits for patients with CHF, specifically for cardiac function and muscle respiratory strength.

ResumoO comportamento humano para com os animais selvagens é definido por influências culturais e muitas vezes é afetado por falta de conhecimento, principalmente em situações de confronto. Podendo levar à matança indiscriminada, consequentemente a um estado de declínio. O presente estudo foi realizado entre 2008 e 2013, envolvendo a análise de serpente que sofreram lesões pertencentes às coleções de répteis do Centro Universitário de Lavras e Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora. As lesões foram classificadas de acordo com a localização no corpo. Entre os 449 espécimes analisados, 245 mostram lesões. As serpentes não peçonhentas foram as mais representativas e apresentaram uma maior taxa de lesão (66,3%) do que os peçonhentos (18,2%). A região do corpo onde ocorreu a maior percentagem de lesões registada foi a anterior (39,6%), seguido pelo meio (36,5%) e posterior (8,4%). Acreditamos que este fato pode ter resultado devido a falta de conhecimento sobre como diferenciar espécies. Estudos sobre a relação entre nível de escolaridade e contato com atividades de educação ambiental demonstram redução dos ataques a esses animais. Este fato indica que a preservação de muitas espécies está relacionado à conscientização e educação da população.

AbstractHuman behavior toward wild animals is defined by cultural influences and often is affected by lack of knowledge, mainly in situations of confrontation. The present study was conducted between 2008 and 2013, involving analysis of snakes that had suffered injuries belonging to the reptile collections of Centro Universitário de Lavras and Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora. The injuries were classified according to location on the body. Among the 449 specimens analyzed, 245 specimens showed injury to some part of the body. The nonvenomous snakes were the most representative and had a higher rate of injury (66.3%) than the venomous ones (18.2%). The body region where the greatest percentage of injuries was recorded was the anterior (39.6%), followed by the middle (36.5%) and posterior (8.4%). We believe this fact may have resulted due the lack of knowledge on how to differentiate species. Studies of the relationship between schooling level and contact with environmental education activities demonstrate reduction of attacks on these animals. This fact indicates that the preservation of many species is related to awareness and education of the population.

The recent surge in the use of biodiesel in Brazil and abroad, coupled with the availability of large amounts of glycerol, are generating interest in the use of this co-product in several ways, such as its use in animal feed. The use of glycerol in the formulation of diets caused immediate interest to obtain a highly efficient energy rich product to use in animal production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the use of glycerol resulting from biodiesel production as an energy supplement in animal feed, as well as establishing appropriate protocols for each species based on previous studies. Most of them using pigs, cows, bulls, sheep, laying hens and broilers. It was possible to infer from these studies that glycerol was a food ingredient suitable for replacement in diets of different animal species.

El reciente aumento en el uso de biodiesel en Brasil y en el extranjero, junto con la disponibilidad de gran cantidad de su residuo, el glicerol, ha generado un gran interés en el uso de este co-producto de varias maneras, entre ellas su aplicación en la alimentación animal. El uso de glicerol en la formulación de dietas despierta interés inmediato para obtener un producto rico en energía y alta eficiencia de utilización por los animales. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar los efectos del uso de la glicerina resultante de la producción de biodiesel como suplemento energético en la producción de alimentos para animales, buscando establecer protocolos adecuados para cada especie a partir de estudios anteriores. En los trabajos analizados, hubo estudios con cerdos, vacas, toros, ovejas, gallinas ponedoras y pollos de engorde. Del análisis realizado se puede inferir que el glicerol es un ingrediente alimenticio de remplazo adecuado en dietas en animales de producción.

INTRODUÇÃO: O acidente vascular encefálico (AVE) é um quadro neurológico agudo de repercussões amplas, que exige de suas vítimas programas de reabilitação desafiadores na promoção da função. Nesse contexto, a Realidade Virtual (RV) é uma ferramenta de interface na reabilitação que pode gerar altos índices de motivação do paciente e permitir adaptação da terapia ao seu nível de função. OBJETIVO: Verificar o efeito da RV por meio de videogame sobre o controle postural de um indivíduo pós-AVE. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Um indivíduo pós-AVE com um ano de lesão foi submetido a um protocolo de reabilitação física com videogame numa frequência de três vezes por semana por um período de 12 semanas. Anteriormente e após o programa foi realizada dinamometria por plataforma de força para análise de variáveis relacionadas ao centro de pressão (COP). RESULTADOS: Na reavaliação, observou-se que a amplitude de deslocamento médio-lateral (x) aumentou 67% na condição de olhos abertos (OA) e fechados (OF); amplitude anteroposterior (y) aumentou 25 e 44% em OA e OF, respectivamente; área aumentou 109 e 141% em OA e OF; velocidade diminuiu 26 e 0,27% em OA e OF. CONCLUSÃO: A RV como interface na reabilitação possivelmente ampliou a exploração da base de suporte para manutenção da estabilidade, constituindo recurso adicional no tratamento desses indivíduos.

INTRODUCTION: The impaired postural control is one of the main problems for stroke survivors. Its consequences require the development of effective and challenging rehabilitation strategies for promotion of function. In this context, studies focusing on Virtual Environment (VE) suggest that Virtual Reality (VR) is an interface device which allows creating high levels of motivation and adaptation of the patient to the therapy. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of VR using video game to the improvement of postural control in a chronic stroke survivor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Only one subject participated in this study and was submitted to a rehabilitation protocol of 12 weeks, three times a week, using videogame. Measures of the center of pressure were obtained previously and latter to the protocol using a force plate. RESULTS: The protocol resulted in higher amplitude of sway in x and y for both eyes open and eyes closed condition, and a higher area of sway in both conditions too. However, the velocity of sway was reduced for both conditions. CONCLUSION: The VR as an interface device in rehabilitation could be responsible for improve the exploration of the support base and thus might be an additional device in clinical rehabilitation.

FUNDAMENTO: A estimulação endocárdica convencional do ventrículo direito (VD) ocasiona alargamento do QRS e dessincronização do miocárdio, comprometendo a função ventricular. Com a necessidade de estimulação menos deletéria, a estimulação septal do VD tem sido mais utilizada. Eventualmente têm sido relatados limiares mais altos e ondas R menores na estimulação septal. OBJETIVO: Comparar os parâmetros das estimulações apical e septal, intrapaciente, para verificar se existem diferenças que possam interferir na escolha do ponto de estimulação. MÉTODOS: Estudo prospectivo controlado. Foram incluídos 25 pacientes, com 67,2 ± 9 anos, 10 (40%) mulheres, com indicações de marca-passo por bradiarritmias. Etiologias foram degenerativa em nove (36%), coronariopatia em oito (32%), doença de Chagas em sete (28%), e valvopatia em um (4%) pacientes. Foram utilizados eletrodos de fixação ativa e avaliados os limiares de comando, impedância e onda R uni e bipolares no implante e após seis meses. RESULTADOS: A média aguda dos limiares de comando, ondas R e impedâncias unipolares/bipolares septais x apicais foram, respectivamente, 0,73x0,74V e 0,73x0,78V; 10x9,9 mV e 12,3x12,4 mV; 579x621 Ω e 611x629 Ω. Comparações entre parâmetros septais e apicais com teste t-pareado bicaudal demonstraram um P > 0,1. Após seis meses, a média dos limiares de comando, ondas R e Impedâncias unipolares/ bipolares septais x apicais foram, respectivamente, 0,5 x 0,72 V e 0,71 x 0,87 V; 11,4x9,5 mV e 12x11,2 mV; 423x426Ω e 578x550Ω, com P > 0,05, exceto comparando-se limiar de estimulação unipolar septal com apical unipolar p de 0,02. CONCLUSÃO: Utilizando comparações intrapaciente, não existem diferenças expressivas entre parâmetros eletrofisiológicos de estimulação septal e apical sendo que não há restrições para a escolha da estimulação septal em ventrículo direito.

BACKGROUND: The conventional right ventricle (RV) endocardial pacing leads QRS widening and desynchronization myocardial compromising ventricular function. With the need for stimulation less deleterious, RV septal pacing has been used more. Eventually have been reported higher thresholds and smaller R waves in the septal stimulation. OBJECTIVE: To compare the parameters of the septal and apical stimulation, intra-patient, if there are any differences that may affect the choice of the point of stimulation. METHODS: A prospective controlled study. We included 25 patients, 67.2±9 years, 10 (40%) women with indications for pacemaker for bradyarrhythmias. Etiologies were degenerative in nine (36%), Coronary disease in eight (32%), Chagas disease in seven (28%), and valve disease in one (4%) patient. Electrodes were active fixation and assessed the thresholds of command, impedance and R wave in uniand bipolar implant and after six months. RESULTS: The average acute threshold command, R wave and impedance unipolar / bipolar septais x apicais were respectively 0.73 x 0.73V and 0,74V x 0,78V; 10 x 9,9mV and 12,3 x 12,4mV; 579 x 621Ω and 611 x 629Ω. Comparisons between parameters with septal and apical two-tailed paired t-test showed a P > 0.1. After six months, the mean control thresholds, R wave impedances and unipolar/bipolar septais x apicais were respectively 0.5V x 0 72V and 0.71V x 0,87V; 11.4 x 9,5mV and 12x11,2mV; 423x426 Ω and 578x550 Ω, with P > 0.05, except compared to unipolar pacing threshold septal apical unipolar P 0.02. CONCLUSION: Using intra-patient comparisons, no significant differences between electrophysiological parameters septal and apical pacing and there are no restrictions for choosing the right ventricular septal pacing.

contra el virus de la leucosis enzoótica bovina (VLEB), comparándola con el ensayo inmunoenzimático (ELISA). Se procesaron 360 muestras de suero bovino para ambas pruebas, siguiendo las indicaciones del fabricante. El grado de concordancia (GC), valores predictivos (VP) y razones de verosimilitud (RV) fueron determinados y analizados. El GC entre ambas pruebas resultó ser del 86,4%, con un coeficiente Kappa (K) = 0,7. La IDGA detectó una significativa (P<0,001) menor proporción (47,2%) de sueros positivos que el ELISA (60,8%). La sensibilidad de la IDGA resultó ser del 77,6% por debajo de lo deseado, mientras que tuvo un 100% de especificidad. El VP positivo de100% y la razón de verosimilitud positiva RV con valor indeterminado (∞), mostraron que ésta es una prueba segura para la identificación de bovinos infectados con el VLEB. Contrariamente, el VP negativo de 74,2% y la RV negativa de 0,2, indican que existe una baja probabilidad, de que los bovinos con resultados seronegativos alVLEB, estén realmente libres de la infección por el VLEB. Los resultados sugieren que la IDGA es una prueba adecuada para estudios epidemiológicos en poblaciones con alta prevalencia del VLEB, por ser baja la posibilidad de generar resultados falsos positivos. Sin embargo, en poblaciones de baja prevalencia, su uso estaría restringido, debido a la considerable probabilidad de emitir resultados falsos negativos. En consecuencia, el ELISA debería ser la prueba de elección en programas de erradicación. Este trabajo es una contribución para el control y erradicación de la leucosis enzoótica bovina, al aportar información que permite seleccionar la técnica más adecuada, según la situación epidemiológica de esa enfermedad en la zona y el objetivo sanitario que se persigan

The efficacy of the agar gel immunodifusion test (AGID) for the detection of antibodies against the enzootic bovine leucosis virus (EBLV) was evaluated and compared with the ELISA test. A total of 360 bovine serum samples were tested for both tests, following the manufacturer instructions. The agreement degree (AD), predictive values (PV), and coefficient of probability (CP) were determined and analyzed. There was a good AD between both tests (86.4%; Kappa coefficient =0.7). The AGID test detected a significant (P<0.001) lesser proportion (47.2%) of positive sera than the ELISA test (60.8%). The AGID sensitivity was 77.6% lower than the expected, while there was 100% specificity. The positive PV of a 100% and the positive CP with an undetermined value (∞) showed that AGID is a safe test for the detection of cattle infected with EBLV. In contrast, the negative PV of 74.2% and the negative CP of 0.2 indicate that there is a slight probability that cattle, whose sera were negative to EBLV using the AGID, are really free of EBLV infection. These results suggest that AGID is a suitable test for epidemiological studies, inpopulations with high EBLV prevalence, due to the minor risk of producing false positive results. However in populations with low prevalence of the disease, the use of the AGID test would be restricted due to the high possibility of giving false negative results. Therefore, the ELISA should be the test selected for eradication programs. This work is a contribution to the control and eradication programs of the enzootic bovine leucosis, since it provides information which allows the selection of the most adequate technique, according to the epidemiological status of this disease in the zone and the sanitary target pursued

OBJECTIVE: To describe a new more efficient method of endocardial cardiac stimulation, which produces a narrower QRS without using the coronary sinus or cardiac veins. METHODS: We studied 5 patients with severe dilated cardiomyopathy, chronic atrial fibrillation and AV block, who underwent definitive endocardial pacemaker implantation, with 2 leads, in the RV, one in the apex and the other in the interventricular septum (sub pulmonary), connected, respectively, to ventricular and atrial bicameral pacemaker outputs. Using Doppler echocardiography, we compared, in the same patient, conventional (VVI), high septal ("AAI") and bifocal ("DDT" with AV interval ~ 0) stimulation. RESULTS: The RV bifocal stimulation had the best results with an increase in ejection fraction and cardiac output and reduction in QRS duration, mitral regurgitation and in the left atrium area (p <= 0.01). The conventional method of stimulation showed the worst result. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that, when left ventricular stimulation is not possible, right ventricular bifocal stimulation should be used in patients with severe cardiomyopathy where a pacemaker is indicated.
