Abstract The banana is one of the most consumed fruits in the world, but it has little shelf life due to its high water activity. Drying is able to increase shelf life and pre-treatments can optimize the process. The objective was to study the solar drying kinetics and evaluate the effect of pre-treatments on the drying kinetics and physico-chemical quality of 'Prata' bananas. The drying was carried out in a solar dryer and the pre-treatments consisted of immersing the samples in solutions of water, citric acid (1%) and lemon juice (10%). Water loss, drying kinetics, mathematical models and physical-chemical and colorimetric characteristics of fresh and dried bananas were evaluated. The drying rate was higher at the beginning and stabilized after 20 hours. The mathematical model of Midilli and Kucuk was the one that best fit the experimental data. The water content, ascorbic acid and the parameters L *, b *, C * and h ° reduced after drying. Reducing sugars and a * coordinate increased and the acidity was not changed with drying. The solar drying of 'Prata' bananas is a sustainable and economical way to make a product available with a longer shelf life.

RESUMO OBJETIVO Determinar a prevalência de síndrome metabólica e de seus componentes em adolescentes brasileiros. MÉTODOS Foram avaliados 37.504 adolescentes, participantes do Estudo de Riscos Cardiovasculares em Adolescentes (ERICA), estudo transversal de âmbito nacional e de base escolar. Os adolescentes, de 12 a 17 anos de idade, residiam em municípios com mais de 100 mil habitantes. A amostra foi estratificada e conglomerada em escolas e turmas. Os critérios da International Diabetes Federation foram utilizados para definir síndrome metabólica. Prevalências de síndrome metabólica foram estimadas segundo sexo, faixa etária, tipo de escola e estado nutricional. RESULTADOS Dos 37.504 adolescentes, 50,2% eram do sexo feminino; 54,3% tinham de 15 a 17 anos e 73,3% estudavam em escolas públicas. A prevalência nacional de síndrome metabólica foi 2,6% (IC95% 2,3-2,9), discretamente maior no sexo masculino e naqueles de 15 a 17 anos na maioria das macrorregiões. A prevalência foi a maior nos residentes na macrorregião Sul, nas adolescentes mais jovens e nos adolescentes mais velhos. A prevalência foi maior nas escolas públicas (2,8% [IC95% 2,4-3,2]) que nas escolas privadas (1,9% [IC95% 1,4-2,4]) e nos adolescentes obesos em comparação aos não obesos. As combinações de componentes mais frequentes, respondendo por 3/4 das combinações, foram: circunferência de cintura elevada, HDL-colesterol baixo e pressão arterial elevada, seguida de circunferência da cintura elevada, lipoproteína de alta densidade (HDL-c) baixo e triglicerídeos elevados, e wpor circunferência da cintura elevada, HDL baixa e triacilgliceróis e pressão arterial elevados. A HDL baixa foi o segundo componente mais frequente, mas a maior prevalência de síndrome metabólica (26,8%) foi observada na presença de triglicerídeos elevado. CONCLUSÕES O ERICA é o primeiro estudo nacional a apresentar prevalências de síndrome metabólica e descrever a participação dos seus componentes. Apesar de a prevalência da síndrome metabólica ter sido baixa, as altas prevalências de alguns componentes e de participação de outros na composição da síndrome torna importante o diagnóstico precoce de tais alterações, mesmo que não agrupadas na síndrome metabólica.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components in Brazilian adolescents. METHODS We evaluated 37,504 adolescents who were participants in the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA), a cross-sectional, school-based, national study. The adolescents, aged from 12 to 17 years, lived in cities with populations greater than 100,000 inhabitants. The sample was stratified and clustered into schools and classes. The criteria set out by the International Diabetes Federation were used to define metabolic syndrome. Prevalences of metabolic syndrome were estimated according to sex, age group, school type and nutritional status. RESULTS Of the 37,504 adolescents who were evaluated: 50.2% were female; 54.3% were aged from 15 to 17 years, and 73.3% were from public schools. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 2.6% (95%CI 2.3-2.9), slightly higher in males and in those aged from 15 to 17 years in most macro-regions. The prevalence was the highest in residents from the South macro-region, in the younger female adolescents and in the older male adolescents. The prevalence was higher in public schools (2.8% [95%CI 2.4-3.2]), when compared with private schools (1.9% [95%CI 1.4-2.4]) and higher in obese adolescents when compared with nonobese ones. The most common combinations of components, referring to 3/4 of combinations, were: enlarged waist circumference (WC), low HDL-cholesterol (HDL-c) and high blood pressure; followed by enlarged WC, low HDL-c and high triglycerides; and enlarged WC, low HDL-c, high triglycerides and blood pressure. Low HDL was the second most frequent component, but the highest prevalence of metabolic syndrome (26.8%) was observed in the presence of high triglycerides. CONCLUSIONS ERICA is the first Brazilian nation-wide study to present the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and describe the role of its components. Despite the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome being low, the high prevalences of some components and participation of others in the syndrome composition shows the importance of early diagnosis of this changes, even if not grouped within the metabolic syndrome.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influencia de diferentes cimentos resinosos na deflexao de cuspides de dentes tratados endodonticamente e restaurados com inlays em resina composta. Sessenta pre-molares foram divididos aleatoriamente em cinco grupos (n=12): grupo 1 - dentes higidos; 2 - cavidade; 3 - Rely X ARC; 4 - RelyX Unicem; 5 - SeT. Os dentes dos grupos 2, 3, 4 e 5 receberam preparos cavitarios MOD e tratamento endodontico. Foram realizadas moldagens com silicone por adicao nos grupos 3, 4 e 5, seguido de vazamento de gesso tipo IV. Inlays em resina composta foram construidas sobre os modelos de gesso, sendo as inlays cimentadas com os cimentos resinosos. Uma carga de 200 N foi aplicada na face oclusal, e a deflexao de cuspide foi medida usando um micrometro. Apos 24 h, a deflexao de cuspide foi medida novamente sob carga de 300 N. De acordo com o teste t-Student, nao houve diferenca estatistica na deflexao de cuspides apenas para o grupo dos dentes higidos (p = 0.389) e o grupo do RelyX ARC (p = 0.188) quando comparada as duas cargas. De acordo com ANOVA e o tese de Tukey, os dentes higidos tiveram a menor media de deflexao de cuspides, diferindo estatisticamente dos outros grupos (p<0.05). A maior deflexao de cuspides foi obtida com o grupo SeT e o grupo cavidades, nao diferindo estatisticamente entre si. Valores intermediarios foram obtidos para os grupos RelyX ARC e RelyX Unicem, diferindo estatisticamente entre si. Os cimentos resinosos autoadesivos RelyX Unicem e SeT mostraram menor capacidade de manter a rigidez do complexo dente/restauracao em comparacao com o cimento resinoso RelyX ARC.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different resin cements on the cuspal deflection of endodontically treated teeth restored with composite resin inlays. Sixty upper premolars were randomly divided into five groups (n=12): 1 - sound teeth; 2 - cavity; 3 - Rely X ARC; 4 - RelyX Unicem; 5 - SeT. The teeth from groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 received a MOD preparation and endodontic treatment. Impressions were made with vinyl polysiloxane and poured using type IV die stone in groups 3, 4 and 5. Inlays with composite resin were built over each cast and luted with the resin cements. A 200 N load was applied on the occlusal surface, and cuspal deflection was measured using a micrometer. After 24 h, cuspal deflection was measured again using a 300 N load. The Student t-test showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the 200 N and 300 N occlusal loads only for the sound teeth group (p = 0.389) and the RelyX ARC group (p = 0.188). ANOVA and Tukey'test showed that the sound teeth had the lowest mean cuspal deflection, differing statistically from the other groups (p<0.05). The highest cuspal deflections were obtained in the SeT group and the cavity group, with no statistical difference between them. Intermediate values were obtained in RelyX ARC group and RelyX Unicem group, which differed statistically. The self-adhesive resin cements RelyX Unicem and SeT showed less capacity to maintain the stiffness of the tooth/restoration complex than the conventional resin cement RelyX ARC.

A transformação de grãos quebrados em farinhas nativas e modificadas por extrusão é uma alternativa para agregar valor a esses coprodutos do beneficiamento do arroz em casca. Neste estudo, objetivou-se avaliar o processo de extrusão sobre as propriedades físicas e funcionais de farinhas obtidas de diferentes genótipos de arroz (IRGA-417, BRS-Primavera e CNA-8502). Utilizou-se delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, tipo fatorial 3x2, com quatro repetições originais, e análise de variância para avaliar a granulometria, os parâmetros instrumentais de cor (L*, a* e b*), os índices de absorção de água (IAA), leite (IAL) e óleo (IAO), e a solubilidade em água (ISA) e em leite (ISL) das farinhas de arroz. A extrusão promoveu alterações em todas as propriedades físicas e funcionais da farinha de arroz, mas somente o ISA e os parâmetros de cor foram influenciados pelo genótipo e pelo tratamento industrial. As farinhas de arroz tornaram-se mais escuras, tendendo para uma coloração mais avermelhada e amarela após a extrusão. As farinhas de arroz nativas e extrusadas dos cvs. IRGA-417 e BRS-Primavera, e a farinha de arroz extrusada do genótipo CNA-8502 apresentaram partículas mais finas, enquanto que a farinha nativa da linhagem CNA-8502 apresentou partículas mais grossas. As farinhas extrusadas do genótipo IRGA-417 obtiveram maiores expansão e luminosidade, e menores valores de croma a *, croma b * e solubilidade em água, enquanto que as da BRS-Primavera obtiveram maiores valores de croma a* e b*, e menores luminosidade e expansão, e as da CNA-8502 , maior solubilidade em água e menores expansão e valor de croma a*. A partir da extrusão, é possível obter farinhas extrusadas com alta absorção e solubilidade em água e leite, baixa absorção em óleo, apresentando potencial para aplicação em produtos instantâneos, independente do seu genótipo.

The transformation of broken grains into native flours modified by extrusion is an alternative to add value to these co-products from the paddy rice processing. This study aimed to analyze the process of extrusion cooking on the physical and functional characteristics of extruded flours obtained from different rice genotypes (IRGA-417, BRS-Primavera and CNA-8502). The experimental design was completely randomized (3x2 factorial) with four original replicates and analysis of variance to assess particle size, instrumental color parameters (L*, a* and b*), water absorption index (WAI), milk absorption index (MAI), oil absorption index (OAI), water solubility index (WSI) and milk solubility index (MSI) of rice flour. The extrusion process promoted changes in all physical and functional properties of rice flour, but only WSI and color parameters were influenced by genotype and by the industrial processing. Rice flours become darker, tending to a more reddish and yellow coloration after extrusion. Native and extruded rice flours of genotypes IRGA-417, BRS-Primavera and extruded rice flour of genotype CNA-8502 showed finer particles, while native flour of genotype CNA-8502 showed coarser particles. The extruded flours of IRGA-417 genotype obtained higher expansion and luminosity, and lower values of chroma a*, chroma b* and water solubility, while the BRS-Primavera higher values of chroma a* and b*, and lower luminosity and expansion, and CAN-8502 higher water solubility and lower expansion and value of chroma a*. The extrusion process led to flours with high water and milk absorption and solubility, low oil absorption and with potential for application in instant products, regardless of genotype.

Onion (Allium cepa) is being studied as a potential anticancer agent, but little is known regarding its effect in multidrug resistance (MDR) cells. In this work, the cytotoxicity of crude onion extract (OE) and fractioned extract (aqueous, methanolic and ethyl acetate), as well as some onion compounds (quercetin and propyl disulfide) were evaluated in Lucena MDR human erythroleukemic and its K562 parental cell line. The capacity of OE to induce apoptosis and/or necrosis in these cells, the possible participation of oxidative stress and DNA damage were also assessed. Similar sensitivities were obtained for both tumoral cells, however only OE caused significant effects in the cells. In K562 cells, a significant increase of apoptosis was verified while the Lucena cells experienced a significant increase of necrosis. An antioxidant capacity was verified for OE discarding oxidative damage. However, OE provoked similar significant DNA damage in both cell lines. Thus, the OE capacity to overcome the MDR phenotype suggests anti-MDR action of OE.

Wasmannia auropunctata (Roger) e Wasmannia rochai Forel são duas formigas economicamente importantes no Sudeste e Sudoeste da Bahia. Marcadores de RAPD (polimorfismo de DNA amplificado ao acaso) foram utilizados para distinguir e analisar a variabilidade genética de populações de ambas as espécies, provenientes de Ilhéus e Jequié, BA, e da Guiana Francesa. As distâncias genéticas entre populações de W. auropunctata e W.rochai (55,8-71,4%) evidenciam a diferenciação genética entre elas. As populações de W. auropunctata presentes em canaviais e bananais de Jequié mostraram-se geneticamente mais distantes (30,1-46,3%), podendo representar populações restritas a fragmentos isolados. As elevadas distâncias genéticas entre as populações de W. auropunctata das áreas experimentais da CEPLAC, em Ilhéus (26,8-34,6%), assim como as demais populações de Ilhéus (23,3-40,8%), sugerem uma estrutura multicolonial de W. auropunctata no Sudeste da Bahia. A proximidade genética entre as populações de W. auropunctata dos cacauais (14,1%) e coqueirais de Ilhéus (18,5%) com as populações de floresta da Guiana Francesa sugere que houve expansão grande e recente de populações oriundas de uma única população a partir de um centro não-determinado, estando hoje distribuídas em habitats com características ambientais semelhantes. O elevado polimorfismo e os valores das heterozigosidades estimadas para as duas espécies sugerem que foram analisadas populações nativas de ambas as espécies.

Wasmannia auropunctata (Roger) and Wasmannia rochai Forel are economically important ants in the Southeast and Southwest regions of Bahia State, Brazil. Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to distinguish and analyze the genetic variability of populations of both species from Ilhéus, Jequié, BA and French Guyana. The genetic distances among W. auropunctata and W.rochai populations (55.8-71.4%) suggest genetic differentiation among them. Wasmannia auropunctata populations from sugarcane and banana plantations in Jequié were the most distant genetically (30.1-46.3%) and may represent populations restricted to isolated fragments. The high genetic distances among W. auropunctata populations from CEPLAC experimental areas, in Ilhéus (26.8-34.6%) and the other populations from Ilhéus (23.3-40.8%), suggest a multicolonial structure of W. auropunctata in southeast Bahia. The genetic proximity among the W. auropunctata populations from cocoa (14.1%) and coconut plantations (18.5%) in Ilhéus with the populations from the French Guyanan forests suggest that there was recent and large expansion of populations derived from a single population, that are today distributed in habitats with similar environmental characteristics. The high polymorphism and the estimated heterozygosity values for the two species suggest that we studied native W. auropunctata and W.rochai populations.

Patients with acute schistosomiasis were studied before and after oxamniquine treatment. They had been exposed to cercariae 5 to 9 weeks before, and presented compatible clinical manifestations, eosinophilia, and high levels of total IgE. Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and interleukin-4 were measured by ELISA in whole blood samples under soluble egg antigen or soluble adult worm preparation stimulation. After treatment, the reduction of leukocytosis and eosinophilia were not significant, but total IgE levels decreased significantly, in contrast to IFN-gamma levels that were significantly increased. The oxamniquine treatment of acute schistosomiasis patients is followed by an improvement of a Th1 response in vitro. If this response has a protective aspect is unknown, and some investigations need to be realized.

A maioria dos implantes valvulares cardíacos realizados no Brasil é representada pelas válvulas de pericárdio bovino, seguidas por próteses porcinas. Na avaliação de válvulas biológicas, deve-se considerar: desempenho hidrodinámico, resistência à fadiga e processo de calcificação. No presente estudo, foi avaliado o desempenho hidrodinámico de biopróteses de pericárdio bovino (Biopro-PB-Braile Biomédica) comparativamente às válvulas porcinas (Biopro-PP-Braile Biomédica) através do gradiente médio transvalvular. Os testes hidrodinámicos foram realizados em próteses de diâmetros variando de 19 a 35 mm, submetidas ao Sistema Duplicador de Pulsos Shelhigh (Shelhigh Inc.). O volume de ejeção foi mantido constante em 90 ml, com freqüência de pulso de 60, 70,80, 90 e 100 ciclos por minuto, possibilitando fluxos entre 5 e 9 litros por minuto, equivalentes a fluxos contínuos aproximados de 8 a 18 litros por minuto. Houve tendência à diminuição dos gradientes pressóricos à medida em que aumenta o diâmetro externo das próteses. O gradiente pressórico médio encontrado em próteses de pericárdio bovino foi significativamente menor que o de próteses porcinas (p<0,01), para todos os diâmetros estudados. Em vista da grande variabilidade dos protocolos de testes encontrados na literatura, reforça-se a necessidade de testes padronizados para avaliação hidrodinâmica de próteses valvulares, visando comparação adequada entre os diferentes modelos existentes.

Most of the cardiac valve implantations in Brazil are represented by bovine pericardial valves, followed by the porcine prostheses. In the evaluation of biological valves, the following should be taken into consideration: hydrodynamic performance resistance to fatigue and calcification process. In this study, the hydrodynamic performance of bovine pericardial bioprostheses (Biopro-BP-Braile Biomedica) was evaluated comparatively to porcine valves (Biopro-PP-Braile Biomedica), through the transvalvular medium gradient. The hydrodynamic tests were made on prostheses varying from 19 to 35 mm in diameter, which underwent the pulse duplicator system Shelhigh (Shelligh Inc.). The ejection volume was constantly kept at 90 ml. The pulse frequencies varied between 60 and 100 cycles per minute, allowing flows between 5 and 9 liters per minute, equivalent to approximate continuos flows of 8 to 18 liters per minute. There was tendency to decrease the gradients, in proportion to increase of the bioprostheses external diameters. The medium pressure gradient found in the bovine pericardial prostheses was significantly smaller than that in the porcine prostheses (p<0.01), for all diameters studied. Respecting the large variability of protocols of tests in the literature for hydrodynamic evaluation of valve prostheses, the necessity of standard tests becomes stronger, seeking adequate comparison among the several valves.
