Abstract Accumulated evidence has shown that the oral cavity may be an important reservoir for SARS-CoV-2. Some authors have suggested that the use of mouthrinses could reduce SARS-CoV-2 viral load in the saliva. Thus, the aim of this review was to synthesize evidence about the efficacy of mouthrinses in reducing the salivary viral load of SARS-CoV-2. 2. Nine randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have investigated the efficacy of different mouthrinses in reducing salivary SARS-CoV-2 loads. Various active ingredients have been tested in these trials: 0.5%,1% and 2% povidone-iodine, 0.2% and 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX), 0.075% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), 0.075% CPC with Zinc lactate, 1% and 1.5% hydrogen peroxide (HP), 1.5% HP + 0.12% CHX and ß-cyclodextrin and citrox. The studies reported an intra-group reduction in the salivary levels of the virus, when compared with the baseline. However, the majority of these trials failed to demonstrate a significant inter-group difference between active groups and the control group relative to the decrease in salivary SARS-CoV-2 loads. Although promising, these results should be confirmed by larger trials.

ABSTRACT Objectives: The objective was to evaluate the longevity of ceramic restorative materials in the manufacture of endocrown restorations, through an in vitro study on surface roughness and mechanical strength. Methods: Three restorative materials were evaluated and assigned to experimental groups (n=10 disc specimens): Leucite Reinforced Ceramic, Lithium Disilicate and Nanoceramic Resin. These restorative materials were evaluated for surface before and after aging (n=02 specimens) under a stereomicroscope. The specimens were submitted to the average surface roughness test (Ra) (n=10) in a contact roughness meter before and after aging. As well as the biaxial flexural strength test (n=10), after aging, up to a test speed of 0.5 mm/min. Aging was carried out in a thermocycler, with 5,000 cycles with baths of 5 °C ± 1 ° and 55 °C ± 1 °. Fragments after fracture were observed under a stereomicroscope. The data obtained were tabulated and analyzed using the Minitab statistical program. Results: The surfaces of the specimens do not show changes between the restorative materials and also in relation to aging. For the roughness data, the restorative material factors (p=0.867) and aging (p=0.321) were not statistically significant. The DIS group presented the highest values of fracture resistance (p=0.000), in relation to the LEU and REN groups, which were statistically similar. The same statistical pattern was identified for post-fracture fragment data (p=0.030). Conclusions: The aging factors and restorative material do not interfere with the surface roughness performance. However, the mechanical performance and number of fragments after fracture is affected by the restorative material.

RESUMO Objetivos: Objetivou-se avaliar a longevidade de materiais restauradores cerâmicos na confecção de restaurações endocrowns, através de um estudo in vitro sobre rugosidade superficial e resistência mecânica. Métodos: Três materiais restauradores foram avaliados e distribuídos em grupos experimentais (n=10 espécimes em disco): Cerâmica Reforçada por Leucita, Dissilicato de Lítio e Resina Nanocerâmica. Estes materiais restauradores foram avaliados quanto a superfície antes e após ao envelhecimento (N=2 espécimes) em estereomicroscópio. Os espécimes foram submetidos ao ensaio de rugosidade superficial média (Ra) (N=10) em rugosímetro de contato antes e após o envelhecimento. Como também, ao teste de resistência à flexão biaxial (N=10), após envelhecimento, em uma velocidade de ensaio de 0,5 mm/min. O envelhecimento foi realizado uma termocicladora, sendo 5.000 ciclos com banhos de 5 °C ± 1° e 55 °C ± 1°. Os fragmentos após fratura foram observados em estereomicroscópio. Os dados obtidos foram tabulados e analisados no programa estatístico Minitab. Resultados: As superfícies dos espécimes não mostram alterações entre os materiais restauradores e também em relação ao envelhecimento. Para os dados de rugosidade, os fatores materiais restauradores (p=0,867) e envelhecimento (p=0,321) não foram estatisticamente significativos. O grupo DIS apresentou os maiores valores de resistência à fratura (p=0,000), em relação aos grupos LEU e REN que foram estatisticamente semelhantes. O mesmo padrão estatístico foi identificado para os dados de fragmentos após a fratura (p=0,030). Conclusão: Os fatores envelhecimento e material restaurador não interferem quanto a performance da rugosidade superficial. No entanto, o desempenho mecânico e número de fragmentos após a fratura é afetado pelo material restaurador.

ABSTRACT Objective Published studies have shown associations between anti-ribosomal P (anti-P) antibody and systemic lupus erythematosus with hepatic manifestations. This has been reported also in autoimmune hepatitis. However, the consistency of the latter association remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of anti-P antibodies in autoimmune hepatitis using two different immunoassays. Methods One-hundred and seventy-seven patients with autoimmune hepatitis were screened, and 142 were analyzed for anti-P antibody positivity. The samples were first analyzed using two different immunoassays: enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and chemiluminescence and then compared with a group of 60 patients with systemic lupus erythematous. The positive samples were subjected to western blot analysis. Results Anti-P was found in 5/142 autoimmune hepatitis cases (3.5%) by chemiluminescence and in none by ELISA. Among the five chemiluminescence-positive autoimmune hepatitis samples, on anti-P western blot analysis one was negative, two were weakly positive, and two were positive. In contrast, anti-P was detected in 10/60 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (16.7%) and presented higher chemiluminescence units than the autoimmune hepatitis samples. Conclusion A low frequency of anti-P antibodies was observed in autoimmune hepatitis, suggesting that this test is not useful for the diagnosis or management of this disease.

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar fatores associados ao esquema vacinal oportuno incompleto até os 12 meses de idade, em crianças nascidas em 2015, no município de Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso. Métodos: Inquérito populacional, agosto/2017 a fevereiro/2018, que utilizou o método proposto pela Organização Mundial da Saúde para coletar informações sobre a vacinação de rotina. Para analisar os fatores associados, consideraram-se as recomendações do Programa Nacional de Imunização do Ministério da Saúde. Realizou-se análise univariada e os fatores associados com p<0,20 entraram na análise múltipla, com entrada hierarquizada das variáveis individuais e indicador contextual de concentração de extremos de renda. Resultados: O esquema vacinal oportuno incompleto até os 12 meses foi de 82,03% (IC95% 78,41–86,63). No modelo final, permaneceram independentemente associados: possuir um irmão ou mais no domicílio (OR 3,18; IC95% 1,75–5,76) e não receber visita de agente comunitário de saúde nos últimos 30 dias (OR 1,93; IC95% 1,04–3,57). Conclusões: É necessário implementar busca ativa de crianças com atraso vacinal em relação ao intervalo recomendado para cada vacina, além da necessidade de fortalecer o vínculo da estratégia de saúde da família e cuidadores de crianças.

Abstract Objective: To analyze factors associated with the incomplete timely vaccination schedule up to 12 months of age, in children born in 2015, in the municipality of Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso. Methods: Population survey, August/2017 to February/2018, which used the method proposed by the World Health Organization to collect information about routine vaccination. For analysis of the associated factors, the recommendations of the National Immunization Program of the Ministry of Health were considered. Univariate analysis was performed, and the factors associated with p<0.20 entered in the multiple analysis, with hierarchical entry of individual variables and contextual indicator of concentration of the income extremes. Results: The incomplete timely vaccination schedule up to 12 months was 82.03% (95%CI 78.41–86.63). In the final model, the following remained independently associated: having one or more siblings at home (OR 3.18; 95%CI 1.75–5.76) and not receiving a visit from a community health worker in the last 30 days (OR 1.93; 95%CI 1.04–3.57). Conclusions: It is necessary to implement an active search for children with vaccination delay in relation to the recommended interval for each vaccine, in addition to the need to strengthen the link of the family health strategy and child caregivers.

RESUMO Pobreza e Resiliência nas Narrativas de Educandos da EJA em Situação de Rua. O presente artigo relaciona os conceitos de pobreza e resiliência no estudo de educandos em situação de rua matriculados na Educação de Jovens e Adultos (EJA). O estudo, fruto de dissertação de mestrado, contextualiza a exclusão vivenciada por essa população no Distrito Federal e apresenta, na pesquisa qualitativa, as narrativas como forma de trazer as vozes e visibilizar esses sujeitos, uma vez que estes são invisibilizados socialmente e de forma censitária. Como resultado, as narrativas dos educandos dialogam com os dados do último Censo realizado no DF, reconhecendo, na palavra desses educandos, sujeitos de direito capazes de narrar, refletir e ressignificar a sua condição humana e social a partir de suas histórias de vida.

ABSTRACT Poverty and Resilience in the Narratives of Homeless EJA Students. This article shows the concepts of poverty and resilience of homeless students enrolled in the education program of the youth and adults (EJA). The study, shows the result of a master’s thesis, contextualizes the exclusion of this population in the Federal District, and presents the use of narratives as a way of giving voice and visibility to these people since they are invisible to society and to the census. As a result, the students’ narratives match the census data from the last census carried out in the Federal District, acknowledging, according to these students, people with rights capable of narrating, reflecting, and reframing their human and social condition, based on their life stories.

RESUMO Pitaya (Hylocereus undatus e H. costataricensis) encontra-se no grupo de frutas exóticas e seu cultivo no Brasil está em expansão, sobretudo na região semiárida do Nordeste. Nessa região os problemas de quantidade e qualidade hídrica normalmente ocasionam estresses ambientais limitando à sobrevivência das plantas, principalmente durante a germinação e estabelecimento de plântulas. Sendo assim, objetivou-se verifi car a ação mitigadora de tratamentos pré-germinativos em sementes de pitaya sob estresse salino. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2 × 6, correspondente a duas espécies de pitayas H. undatus e H. costatariciensis e seis tratamentos pré-germinativos (T1 = 0,0 MPa (controle); T2 = estresse salino (-0,4 MPa); T3 = hidrocondicionamento + estresse salino; T4 = ácido giberélico + estresse salino; T5 = ácido salicílico + estresse salino; T6 = tiametoxan + estresse salino). Após 20 dias de semeadura, analisou-se a germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, comprimentos de partes aérea e raiz primária, massa seca total, açúcares solúveis totais e aminoácidos livres totais. H. costaricensis mostrou-se mais tolerante à salinidade que H. undatus. O ácido salicílico estimulou a germinação e o crescimento de H. undatus, além de aumentar o teor de açúcares solúveis em H. costaricensis. O hidrocondicionamento das sementes atenuou o estresse salino durante a germinação de H. undatus e favoreceu o ganho de massa seca. O ácido giberélico estimulou a germinação de H. undatus e o crescimento de plântulas desta e de H. costaricensis, além disso aumentou os níveis de açúcares solúveis em H. undatus.

ABSTRACT Pitaya (Hylocereus undatus and H. costaricensis) is found in the group of exotic fruits and its cultivation in Brazil is expanding, especially in the semi-arid region of the Northeast. In this region, the problems of water quantity and quality usually cause environmental stresses which limit the survival of plants, especially during germination and seedling establishment. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the mitigating action of pre-germination treatments in pitaya seeds under salt stress. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, in a 2 × 6 factorial scheme, corresponding to two species of pitaya (H. undatus and H. costaricensis) and six pre-germination treatments (T1 = 0.0 MPa (control); T2 = salt stress (-0.4 MPa); T3 = hydropriming + salt stress; T4 = gibberellic acid + salt stress; T5 = salicylic acid + salt stress; T6 = thiamethoxam + salt stress). After 20 days of sowing, germination, germination speed index, shoot length, primary root length, total dry mass, total soluble sugars and total free amino acids were analyzed. H. costaricensis was more tolerant to salinity than H. undatus. Salicylic acid stimulated the germination and growth of H. undatus, besides increasing the soluble sugar content in H. costaricensis. Seed hydropriming attenuated salt stress during germination of H. undatus and favored dry mass gain. Gibberellic acid stimulated the germination of H. undatus and the growth of H. undatus and H. costaricensis seedlings, in addition to increasing the levels of soluble sugars in H. undatus.

ABSTRACT Introduction Influenza is an important cause of morbimortality worldwide. Although people at the extremes of age have a greater risk of complications, influenza has been more frequently investigated in the elderly than in children, and inpatients than outpatients. Yearly vaccination with trivalent or quadrivalent vaccines is the main strategy to control influenza. Objectives Determine the clinical and molecular characteristics of influenza A and B infections in children and adolescents with influenza-like illness (ILI). Methods: A cohort of outpatient children and adolescents with ILI was followed for 20 months. Influenza was diagnosed with commercial multiplex PCR platforms. Results: 179 patients had 277 episodes of ILI, being 79 episodes of influenza A and 20 episodes of influenza B. Influenza A and B cases were mild and had similar presentation. Phylogenetic tree of influenza B viruses showed that 91.6% belonged to the B/Yamagata lineage, which is not included in trivalent vaccines. Conclusions: Influenza A and B are often detected in children and adolescents with ILI episodes, with similar and mild presentation in outpatients. The mismatch between the circulating influenza viruses and the trivalent vaccine offered in Brazil may have contributed to the high frequency of influenza A and B in this population.

RESUMO O teste de tetrazólio constitui uma das alternativas promissoras para determinar a viabilidade de sementes dormentes, recalcitrantes e de germinação lenta. Objetivou-se adequar a metodologia do teste de tetrazólio para estimar a viabilidade e vigor em sementes de Piptadenia stipulacea (Benth.) Ducke. Para isso, uma amostra de sementes foi classificada em três sublotes utilizando peneiras de crivo redondo, correspondendo a seis, cinco e quatro milímetros de diâmetro, respectivamente. Inicialmente, avaliou-se o teor de água, curva de embebição, germinação, emergência, índice de velocidade de germinação e emergência, tempo médio de germinação e emergência de plântulas. Na segunda etapa, utilizou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 3 x 9, sendo três sublotes e nove combinações entre concentrações e tempo de imersão no sal de tetrazólio (0,05%/2 h; 0,05%/4 h; 0,05%/6 h; 0,075%/2 h; 0,075%/4 h; 0,075%/6 h; 0,1%/2 h; 0,1%/4 h; 0,1%/6 h), totalizando vinte e sete tratamentos com quatro repetições de 25 sementes, avaliados separadamente a 35 e 40 °C. Para cada tratamento, as sementes foram divididas em quatro classes: sementes viáveis e vigorosas (classe I), viáveis e não vigorosas (classe II), inviáveis (classe III) e mortas (classe IV). O período de 8 h de pré-embebição e 4 h de coloração na solução de tetrazólio a 0,075%, sob 35 ou 40 °C, é adequado para estimar a viabilidade e vigor de sementes de P. stipulacea.

ABSTRACT The tetrazolium test is one of the promising alternatives to determine the viability of dormant, recalcitrant and slow-germinating seeds. The objective of this study was to adapt the tetrazolium test methodology to estimate the viability and vigor of Piptadenia stipulacea (Benth.) Ducke seeds. For this, a sample of seeds was classified into three sublots using round sieves, corresponding to six, five and four millimeters in diameter, respectively. Moisture content, imbibition curve, germination, emergence, germination and emergence speed indices, mean germination time and seedling emergence were initially evaluated. The second stage was conducted using a completely randomized experimental design, in 3 x 9 factorial scheme, corresponding to three sublots and nine combinations between concentrations and time of immersion in tetrazolium salt (0.05%/2 h; 0.05%/4 h; 0.05%/6 h; 0.075%/2 h; 0.075%/4 h; 0.075%/6 h; 0.1%/2 h; 0.1%/4 h; 0.1%/6 h), totaling twenty-seven treatments with four replicates of 25 seeds, evaluated separately at 35 and 40 °C. For each treatment, the seeds were divided into four classes: viable and vigorous seeds (class I), viable and non-vigorous (class II), unviable (class III) and dead (class IV). The period of 8 h of pre-imbibition and 4 h of staining in tetrazolium solution at 0.075%, under 35 or 40 °C, is adequate to estimate the viability and vigor of P. stipulacea seeds.

RESUMO Objetivou-se estabelecer o procedimento adequado do teste de tetrazólio para estimar a viabilidade em sementes de quiabo. Inicialmente, as sementes de quatro lotes de quiabo foram imersas em álcool (98%) por 60 minutos e seguida de 18 horas de embebição em água destilada a 25 ºC. Após este período, as sementes foram seccionadas longitudinalmente, imersas em soluções de tetrazólio de 0,025; 0,050 e 0,075% por 60, 90 e 120 minutos e mantidas em estufa a 35 e 40 °C. Posteriormente, as sementes foram avaliadas quanto à viabilidade, tendo como indicação a coloração dos tecidos (vermelho brilhante rosa ou vermelho carmim forte). Paralelamente, foi instalado o teste de germinação, cujos resultados serviram como referência para o teste de tetrazólio. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualisado, em esquema fatorial 3 x 3 + 1, (três concentrações do sal de tetrazólio x três períodos de imersão e a testemunha) em quatro repetições de 50 sementes para cada tratamento. O teste de tetrazólio para estimar a viabilidade em sementes de quiabo deve ser realizado em solução de tetrazólio de 0,075%, por 90 minutos, a 35 °C.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to establish an adequate tetrazolium test procedure to estimate okra seed viability. Initially, seeds from four okra lots were immersed in alcohol (98%) for 60 minutes, followed by an 18-h soak in distilled water at 25 °C. Then, the seeds were longitudinally sectioned, immersed in 0.025, 0.050 and 0.075% tetrazolium solutions for 60, 90 and 120 minutes and maintained in an oven at 35 and 40 °C. Subsequently, the seeds were evaluated for viability, based on tissue color (bright red, pink or dark Carmine red). Simultaneously, a germination test was conducted, and its results were used as a reference for the tetrazolium test. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 3 x 3 + 1 factorial scheme (three concentrations of tetrazolium salt x three immersion periods, plus the control) in four replicates of 50 seeds for each treatment. The tetrazolium test to estimate okra seed viability should be conducted in 0.075% tetrazolium solution, for 90 minutes, at 35 °C.

Resumo: Os testes rápidos têm sido imprescindíveis na avaliação do potencial fisiológico de sementes, sendo o de tetrazólio um dos que vêm sendo empregados pelas empresas produtoras de sementes. Assim, objetivou-se estabelecer o procedimento adequado para o teste de tetrazólio em sementes de Libidibia ferrea (Mart. ex Tul.) L.P. Queiroz var. ferrea. Para isso, testaram-se três concentrações da solução de tetrazólio (0,05; 0,075 e 0,1%) e três períodos de coloração (1, 3 e 6 horas) sob as temperaturas de 35 e 40 ºC. As sementes também foram avaliadas pelo teste de germinação visando a comparação com a viabilidade obtida pelo teste de tetrazólio. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 3 x 3 + 1 (três concentrações x três períodos + uma testemunha = teste de germinação), para cada temperatura. As médias de sementes viáveis no teste de tetrazólio foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey (p ≤ 0,05), enquanto a comparação entre as médias de sementes viáveis com o teste de germinação foi realizada pelo teste de Dunnett (p ≤ 0,05). Recomenda-se que o teste de tetrazólio para L. ferrea seja realizado na concentração de 0,05% por três horas de coloração, sob 35 °C ou 40 °C.

Abstract: Rapid tests have been essential to evaluate the physiological potential of seeds and the tetrazolium test is one of those which have been used by seed companies. The objective of the study was to establish the procedure for the tetrazolium test in Libidibia ferrea (Mart. Ex Tul.) L.P. Queiroz var. ferrea seeds. For this, three tetrazolium solution concentrations (0.05, 0.075 and 0.1%) and three staining periods (1, 3 and 6 hours) at temperatures of 35 to 40 °C were tested. The seeds were also evaluated by the germination test, whose result was compared with viability by the tetrazolium test. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial design 3 x 3 + 1 (three concentrations x three periods + a control = germination test) for each temperature. Viable seeds in the tetrazolium test were compared by Tukey’s test (p ≤ 0.05), while the comparison between the viable seeds with germination test was carried out by Dunnett’s test (p ≤ 0.05). It is recommended that the tetrazolium test for L. ferrea is carried out at a concentration of 0.05% for three-hour staining under 35 °C or 40 °C.

ABSTRACT Hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients should be routinely revaccinated after transplantation. We evaluated the difficulties met in the revaccination program and how a prospective and tailored follow-up could help to overcome these obstacles. HSCT recipients (n=122) were prospectively followed up and categorized into Group 1 (n=72), recipients who had already started the revaccination program, and Group 2 (n=50), recipients starting their vaccines. Whenever a difficulty was reported, interventions and subsequent evaluations were performed. Reported problems were related to patient compliance, HSCT center and/or vaccination center. Problems related to patient compliance were less frequent than those related to HSCT center modifications of previous recommendations, or to errors made by the vaccination center. The main gap found was vaccination delays (81.9%). Advisory intervention was needed in 64% and 46% of Group 1 and Group 2, respectively (p=0.05), and was partially successful in around 70% of the cases. Total resolution was achieved in more than 35% in both groups. Improvements are needed in the Brazilian vaccination program for HSCT recipients to assure a complete and updated revaccination schedule. HSCT centers should assign nurses and transplant infectious disease specialist physicians to organize the revaccination schedule and to monitor the program development.

Resumo: A qualidade fisiológica de sementes utilizada na produção agrícola é um dos principais fatores que deve ser considerado no momento da implantação da cultura. Objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade de sementes de maxixeiro, cv. Liso de Calcutá, provenientes de plantas oriundas de sementes previamente tratadas com bioestimulante (0, 5, 10, 15 e 20 mL. kg-1 de sementes) e cultivadas sob dois níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (0,5 e 3,5 dS. m-1). Inicialmente, determinou-se o teor de água das sementes e realizou-se os testes de germinação, envelhecimento acelerado, emergência em casa de vegetação, índice de velocidade de emergência, altura e massa seca da parte aérea das plântulas. Constatou-se que a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de maxixeiro oriundas de plantas submetidas ao estresse salino é afetada de maneira negativa, e que o uso de bioestimulante, aplicado via semente, proporciona efeito benéfico na qualidade fisiológica das sementes produzidas na geração seguinte.

Abstract: The physiological quality of seeds used in agricultural production is one of the main factors that should be considered when implanting the culture. This study aimed at evaluating the quality of bur gherkin seeds, cv. Liso de Calcutá, coming from plants grown from seeds that were previously treated with biostimulant (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mL. kg-1 seeds) and cultivated in two irrigation water salinities (0.5 and 3.5 dS. m-1). Initially, the water content of seeds was determined and the following tests were performed: germination, accelerated aging, greenhouse emergence, emergence speed index, height and dry mass of seedling aerial part. It was found that the physiological quality of bur gherkin seeds coming from plants that were subjected to salt stress is negatively affected, and that the use of biostimulant, applied via seeds, provides beneficial effects on the physiological quality of seeds produced in the next generation.

SUMMARY Zika virus (ZKV) infection is a huge public health problem in Brazil because of the increased incidence of microcephaly in neonates from infected mothers. Detection of specific IgG antibodies in maternal serum samples constitutes an important approach for diagnosing ZKV infection and evaluating its relationship with neonatal microcephaly. However, as there is no serological test produced in Brazil to detect IgM and IgG antibodies against ZKV, we sought to examine specific IgG in serum samples from patients or suspected mothers to detect previous infection and to test for specificity with regard to flaviviral infections occurring in the same area. Brazilian Zika virus native antigens were obtained from infected Vero cell layers or free virions in the culture medium and then used in ELISA. We tested sera from eight ZKV RNA-diagnosed infected patients (ZKVR), seven neonates with microcephaly and their mothers after delivery (MM), 140 dengue virus IgM-positive (DM) and IgG (DG)-positive patients, and 100 yellow fever (YF)-vaccinated patients. According to the ELISA, ZKVR samples were mostly positive (7/8), and all the MM serum samples were positive for ZKV IgG (7/7). In contrast, cross-reactions for dengue or yellow fever-vaccinated patients were observed, including DM (48/95), DG (10/45) or YF (3/100) serum samples; however, these cross-reactions exhibited low antigen avidity so that 6 M urea largely removed this cross-reactivity, with only a few cross-reacting samples remaining (8/140). ELISA based on extracted virions was much more specific, with all ZKVR (8/8) and MM sera being positive for ZKV IgG (7/7) and only borderline cross-reactivity found for DM (6/95), DG (3/45) or YF (4/100)-vaccinated serum samples. This technique (ELISA) can identify specific IgG in ZKV-infected patients and may be helpful in diagnosing congenital infetions after maternal RNA virus clearance or in epidemiological studies.

Onychomychosis, a nail fungus infection is the most frequent nail ailment, constituting about half of all nail disorders. It can be caused by dermatophytes, non-dermatophytes, yeasts and Prothoteca spp. Methods include 5407 samples of patients with suspected onychomycosis, studied from January 2002 to December 2006, by direct mycological examination and fungi culture. The diagnosis of onychomycosis was confirmed in samples from 3822 direct mycological and/or culture positive. The diagnosis was established by culture for fungi. Among the 1.428 identified agents, the dermatophytes were responsible for 68.6% (N = 980) of cases, followed by yeasts with 27.6% (N = 394), non-dermatophytes fungi with 2.2% (N = 31), Prothoteca spp with 0.1% (N = 2), and associations with 1.5% (N = 22). Females were more affected, with 66% (N = 2527) of cases, and the most affected age group ranged from 31 to 60 years of age (median 47 years). Fungal microbiota is often changed in the world, both quantitatively and qualitatively, and is affected by several environmental factors. Thus, the periodic review of the composition of this microbiota is important to evaluate the epidemiology and thus proportion a better therapeutic response.

Para caracterizar o tipo de trabalho realizado nas praias urbanas na cidade de Natal, RN, Brasil, e determinar possíveis fatores associados entre trabalhadores expostos ao sol, foram selecionados sujeitos em cinco praias urbanas. A coleta de dados foi baseada em um questionário validado. Os resultados foram obtidos para 362 trabalhadores. Indivíduos eram predominantemente do sexo masculino (72,6%), que trabalharam sob exposição direta ao sol (87,8%). Aproximadamente 95% tinham até 6 anos de escolaridade e 87,91% ganhavam em média $ 318,75 dólares ou mais por mês. Medidas de fotoproteção foram relatadas por 80,1%, entre os quais protetor solar e bonés/chapéus se destacaram. Cerca de 25% fumava e mais da metade não bebia álcool. O gênero masculino, escolaridade até 6 anos, a exposição diária por até 6 horas e o uso de fatores de fotoproteção foram associados com a categoria de trabalhado outdoor.

Subjects were selected from five urban beaches to characterize the type of work conducted on urban beaches in the city of Natal, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, and determine potential associated factors among workers exposed to the sun. Data collection was based on a validated questionnaire. Results were obtained for 362 workers. Individuals were predominantly male (72.6%) who worked under direct exposure to the sun (87.8%). Almost 95% had no more than 6 years of schooling and 87.91% earned an average monthly income of $318.75 dollars or more. Photoprotection was reported by 80.1%, among which sunscreen and caps/hats were predominant. Around 25% smoked and more than half did not consume alcohol. Male gender, no more than 6 years of schooling, daily exposure for up to 6 hours and use of photoprotection were the factors associated with the outdoor work category.
