Abstract Resolution 658/2022 of the Brazilian Regulatory Agency requires the determination of the permitted daily exposure (PDE) of pharmaceutical agents. Ginkgo biloba L. is used therapeutically to treat memory deficits and other brain diseases. However, published results indicate that more studies are needed to confirm the safety of Ginkgo biloba. This study aimed to evaluate the dry extract of Ginkgo biloba L. leaves PDE as an ingredient in an oral pharmaceutical product in preclinical studies using mice. Acute oral toxicity and repeated dose experiments were performed based on OECD guidelines, as well as genotoxicity tests. The results indicate that Ginkgo biloba L. has low acute toxicity, no liver toxicity, and does not alter blood glucose levels. No changes in weight gain were observed, but food intake decreased in males during the first week of treatment at the highest dose. Hematological parameters were not altered in males, whereas females presented lower leukocyte and lymphocyte counts and higher neutrophil counts at the highest dose. The lipid profile was not altered in males, whereas total cholesterol was increased in females. The estimated PDE was 0.1 mg/day and, when related to the maximum residual concentration, indicates that the cleaning process used is safe and does not require reassessment.

ABSTRACT Acute wound dressings can be based on PVA hydrogels, which present many characteristics of an ideal dressing, e.g., fluid uptake, a moisturized environment, etc. The lack of antimicrobial properties leads to the addition of natural active agents. The present work aims to manufacture and compare PVA gels loaded with Barbatimão bark extract, Leucaena bark extract, Aloe vera, and Lavender essential oil. They were characterized by FTIR, swelling tests, SEM, actives release. There were interactions between PVA and the active agents. The addition of Leucaena and Barbatimão increased the PVA ability to swell, but the opposite was found for Aloe vera and Lavender essential oil. PVA-Lavender essential oil samples presented interconnected pores, while samples with essential oil or extracts presented high crystallinity. Lavender essential oil and Aloe vera presented the highest release. The Barbatimão and Leucaena samples’ release may be related to the samples’ swelling, but the initial release of Aloe vera and Lavender samples was diffusion controlled by swelling. Their long-term release was dose-dependent for Aloe vera, while it was a non-Fickian diffusion for Lavender essential oil related to the hydrogel’s relaxation step. Abstract Introduction: patients with COVID-19 undergo changes in leukocyte count, respiratory disorders, and an increase in inflammatory substances. To improve the inflammatory condition, some nutrients can be used, including arginine, omega-3 fatty acids and nucleotides. This study aims to evaluate how oral immunonutrient supplements affects serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and lymphocyte count in patients with COVID-19. Methods: in this double-blind clinical trial, we randomized 43 adult patients with COVID-19 to receive a standard high-protein normocaloric supplement (control) or an immunonutrient-enriched supplement (experiment) for 7 days. The primary outcome was to evaluate changes in total lymphocyte count and serum level of CRP. The assessment of risk and nutritional status of these patients was also performed. Results: forty-three patients with mean age of 41.5 (± 1.8) years were followed up, 39.5 % of them women. The mean body mass index was 27.6 (± 0.8) kg/m² and 58.1 % had low nutritional risk. In the experiment group, there was a CRP reduction of 23.6 (± 7.5) mg/L, while in the control branch the decrease was 14.8 (± 12.1) mg/L (p = 0.002). There was an increase in lymphocytes in the experiment group (+367.5 ± 401.8 cells/mm³) and a reduction in the control group (-282.8 ± 327.8 cells/mm³), although there was no statistical significance (p = 0.369). Relative risk (RR) of treatment in reducing CRP by 30 % or more was 4.45 (p < 0.001; 95 % CI, 1.79-11.07). RR in increasing lymphocyte count by 30 % or more was 1.28 (p = 0.327; 95 % CI, 0.67-2.45). Conclusion: we conclude that immunonutrient supplements seem to reduce CRP levels more than standard high-protein normocaloric supplements.

Resumen Introducción: los pacientes con COVID-19 sufren cambios en el recuento de leucocitos, trastornos respiratorios y aumento de sustancias inflamatorias. Para mejorar la condición inflamatoria se pueden usar algunos nutrientes, como la arginina, los ácidos grasos omega-3 y los nucleótidos. Este estudio tiene como objetivo evaluar cómo los suplementos de inmunonutrientes orales afectan a los niveles séricos de proteína C-reactiva (PCR) y al recuento de linfocitos en pacientes con COVID-19. Métodos: en este ensayo clínico doble ciego, aleatorizamos a 43 pacientes adultos con COVID-19 para recibir un suplemento normocalórico estándar alto en proteínas (control) o un suplemento enriquecido con inmunonutrientes (experimento) durante 7 días. El resultado primario fue evaluar los cambios en el recuento total de linfocitos y el nivel sérico de PCR. También se realizó la evaluación del riesgo y el estado nutricional de estos pacientes. Resultados: cuarenta y tres pacientes con edad media de 41,5 (± 1,8) años fueron seguidos, el 39,5 % de ellos mujeres. El índice de masa corporal medio fue de 27,6 (± 0,8) kg/m² y el 58,1 % tenían bajo riesgo nutricional. En el grupo experimental hubo una reducción de la PCR de 23,6 (± 7,5) mg/L, mientras que en la rama de control la disminución fue de 14,8 (± 12,1) mg/L (p = 0,002). Hubo un aumento de linfocitos en el grupo experimental (+367,5 ± 401,8 células/mm³) y una reducción en el grupo de control (-282,8 ± 327,8 células/mm³), aunque no hubo significación estadística (p = 0,369). El riesgo relativo (RR) del tratamiento para reducir la PCR en un 30 % o más fue de 4,45 (p < 0,001; IC 95 %: 1,79-11,07). El RR en el aumento del recuento de linfocitos en un 30 % o más fue de 1,28 (p = 0,327; IC 95 %: 0,67-2,45). Conclusión: se concluye que los suplementos de inmunonutrientes parecen reducir los niveles de PCR más que los suplementos normocalóricos estándar altos en proteína.

Abstract Aim: This study evaluated the effects of 10 weeks of combined exercise training on the salivary oxidative profile of hypertensive and normotensive postmenopausal women. Methods: Twenty-six non-obese postmenopausal women were divided into two groups: the hypertensive group (HT; n = 13; 58.9 ± 3.9 years; and BMI of 27.7 ± 4.6 kg/m2) or the normotensive group (NT; n = 13; 52.7 ± 5.2 years; and BMI of 26.9 ± 2.9 kg/m2). They performed 30 sessions of combined exercises over 10 weeks: 45 min per session, three times a week. Resting saliva samples were collected after an overnight fast to evaluate salivary nitrite levels and oxidative stress markers before and after training. Results: Two-way ANOVA showed that there was no difference in the responses over time between the hypertensive and normotensive groups in catalase, superoxide dismutase salivary activity, total antioxidant capacity, or lipid peroxidation. However, superoxide dismutase activity (δHT -0.87 ± 14.53 SOD/mg protein; δNT: 7.13 ± 9.39 SOD/mg protein; p < 0.01) and nitrite levels (δHT 10.32 ± 60.83 mM; δNT 101.92 ± 149.57 mM; p = 0.03) were higher overall in the hypertensive group compared to the normotensive group. Moreover, salivary nitrite levels increased over time (p = 0.04) in both groups. Conclusion: 10 weeks of combined exercise training did not change salivary oxidative stress markers in either normotensive or hypertensive postmenopausal women, although, after exercise training, nitrite levels increased in both groups, even with higher baseline salivary nitrite levels in hypertensive women. Thus, recurrent exercise seems to be a safe strategy after menopause from the standpoint of oxidative stress, regardless of the presence of hypertension.

SUMMARY Cordia trichotoma, popularly known in Brazil as ‘louro-pardo’, has numerous environmental and timber-related applications. This species is naturally propagated by seeds; however, this form of propagation results in restricted seedling production due to high genetic variability associated with a low degree of forest improvement. Thus, cloning of selected adult trees is an alternative for producing high-quality plants. The aims of this work were to evaluate the emission of epicormic shoots from pruned branches and to define a protocol for the in vitro establishment of C. trichotoma selected adult trees. Propagules used in these experiments were derived from the selection of four C. trichotoma adult trees. The branches were placed in a greenhouse to induce epicormic shoots. Number of shoots according to the climatic season (autumn and spring) and shoot collection time were evaluated. Three sodium hypochlorite concentrations were evaluated for five minutes (C1 = 0.58 % active chlorine, C2 = 1.12 % active chlorine, and C3 = 2.12 % active chlorine) for in vitro establishment. Results indicated that the epicormic shoot technique could be considered viable for shoot emission of C. trichotoma, regardless of the climatic season (autumn or spring). Sodium hypochlorite solution applied for 5 minutes (1.12 % of active chlorine) was effective for the in vitro establishment of nodal segments from epicormic shoots, resulting in 61.3 % of established explants. These results are promising for the cloning of adult trees during the mature stage of development in the field without the need to cut the selected tree.

RESUMEN: Cordia trichotoma, conocida popularmente en Brasil como "louro-pardo", tiene numerosas aplicaciones ambientales y madereras. Esta especie se propaga naturalmente por semillas; sin embargo, esta forma de propagación resulta en una producción restringida de plántulas por la alta variabilidad genética asociada con un bajo grado de mejoramiento forestal. La clonación de árboles adultos seleccionados es una alternativa para producir plantas de alta calidad. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la emisión de brotes epicórmicos de ramas podadas y definir un protocolo para el establecimiento in vitro de árboles adultos seleccionados. Los propágulos utilizados se derivaron de la selección de cuatro árboles adultos y las ramas se colocaron en un invernadero para inducir brotes epicórmicos. Se evaluó el número de brotes según la época climática (otoño y primavera), el tiempo de recolección de los brotes, y tres concentraciones de hipoclorito de sodio durante cinco minutos (C1 = 0,58 % de cloro activo, C2 = 1,12 % de cloro activo y C3 = 2,12 % de cloro activo) para el establecimiento in vitro. Los resultados indicaron que la técnica de brotes epicórmicos podría considerarse viable para la emisión de brotes independientemente de la estación climática. La solución de hipoclorito de sodio (1,12 % de cloro activo) fue eficaz para el establecimiento in vitro de segmentos nodales de brotes epicórmicos, resultando en un 61,3 % de explantes establecidos. Los resultados son prometedores para la clonación de laureles durante la etapa madura de desarrollo en el campo sin necesidad de cortar el árbol seleccionado.

RESUMO Objetivo O objetivo deste estudo é fazer um levantamento das diferentes complicações da sacrectomia parcial, total ou estendida para tratamento de tumores da coluna vertebral. Métodos O estudo é uma análise descritiva de prontuários de uma série de 18 pacientes submetidos à sacrectomia entre 2010 e 2019 em um centro terciário especializado em cirurgias de neoplasia na coluna. As variáveis analisadas foram sexo, idade, tempo de internação, diagnóstico oncológico, padrão de fixação posterior, taxa de complicações e escalas de Frankel, ASA e ECOG. Resultados Dos 18 pacientes, 10 (55,5%) eram homens e 8 (44,5%) mulheres com média de idade de 48 anos. O tempo médio de internação foi de 23 dias. Dos 18 pacientes, 8 (44,5%) contraíram infecções pós-operatórias com necessidade de cirurgia. As complicações perioperatórias incluíram fistula liquórica (22,25%), instabilidade hemodinâmica com necessidade de medicação vasoativa no pós-operatório imediato (22,25%), deiscência da ferida operatória (11,1%), abdome obstrutivo agudo (11,1%), oclusão da artéria ilíaca externa esquerda (11,1%), óbito pós-operatório imediato por infarto agudo do miocárdio (11,1%) e óbito intraoperatório por instabilidade hemodinâmica (11,1%). Conclusões A sacrectomia parcial, total ou estendida é um procedimento complexo com alta taxa de mortalidade e morbidade, mesmo em centros especializados no tratamento de tumores na coluna. ABSTRACT Objective The aim of this study was to conduct a survey of the different complications of partial, total or extended sacrectomy for the treatment of spinal tumors. Method This study is a descriptive analysis of medical records from a series of 18 patients who underwent sacrectomy between 2010 and 2019 at a tertiary center specializing in spinal tumor surgeries. The variables analyzed were sex, age, hospitalization time, oncologic diagnosis, posterior fixation pattern, rate of complications, and Frankel, ASA and ECOG scales. Results Of the 18 patients, 10 (55.5%) were male and 8 (44.5%) were female, and the mean age was 48 years. The mean hospitalization time was 23 days. Of the 18 patients, 8 (44.5%) contracted postoperative infections requiring surgery. Perioperative complications included liquoric fistula (22.25%), hemodynamic instability requiring vasoactive drugs in the immediate postoperative period (22.25%), wound dehiscence (11.1%), acute obstructive abdomen (11.1%), occlusion of the left external iliac artery (11.1%), immediate postoperative death due to acute myocardial infarction (11.1%), and intraoperative death due to hemodynamic instability (11.1%). Conclusions Partial, total or extended sacrectomy is a complex procedure with high morbidity and mortality, even in centers specializing in the treatment of spinal tumors. RESUMEN Objetivo El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar las diferentes complicaciones de la sacrectomía parcial, total o extendida para el tratamiento de tumores vertebrales. Métodos El estudio es un análisis descriptivo de las historias clínicas de 18 pacientes sometidos a sacrectomía entre 2010 y 2019 en un centro terciario especializado en cirugías de neoplasia de columna. Las variables analizadas fueron sexo, edad, estancia hospitalaria, diagnóstico de cáncer, patrón de fijación posterior, tasa de complicaciones, escalas de Frankel, ASA y ECOG. Resultados De los 18 pacientes, 10 (55,5%) eran hombres y 8 (44,5%) mujeres con una edad promedio de 48 años. La estancia hospitalaria promedio fue de 23 días. De los 18 pacientes, 8 (44,5%) contrajeron infecciones posoperatorias que requirieron cirugía. Las complicaciones perioperatorias incluyeron fístula de líquido cefalorraquídeo (22,25%), inestabilidad hemodinámica que requirió medicación vasoactiva en el posoperatorio inmediato (22,25%), dehiscencia de la herida quirúrgica (11,1%), abdomen obstructivo agudo (11,1%), oclusión de la arteria ilíaca externa izquierda (11,1%), muerte posoperatoria inmediata por infarto agudo de miocardio (11,1%) y muerte intraoperatoria por inestabilidad hemodinámica (11,1%). Conclusiones La sacrectomía parcial, total o extendida es un procedimiento complejo con una alta tasa de mortalidad y morbilidad, incluso en centros especializados en el tratamiento de tumores de la columna. RESUMO Introdução: A epilepsia afeta cerca de 50 milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo e aproximadamente 30% desses pacientes apresentam epilepsia refratária, com possíveis consequências na qualidade de vida, morbidade e mortalidade prematura. Objetivo: O objetivo do tratamento com fármacos antiepilépticos (FAEs) é permitir que os pacientes permaneçam sem crises epilépticas com boa tolerabilidade. O levetiracetam (LEV) é um FAE de amplo espectro, com mecanismo de ação único, diferente dos demais e que demonstra ser eficaz e seguro no tratamento de adultos e crianças. Métodos: Estudo de fase III, multicêntrico, randomizado, duplo-cego e controlado por placebo avalia a eficácia e a segurança do LEV em crianças e adultos (4-65 anos) como tratamento adjuvante para crises de início focal em 114 pacientes já tratados com até três FAEs. A análise de eficácia primária foi baseada na proporção de pacientes que apresentaram redução ≥50% no número médio de crises epilépticas focais semanais, durante 16 semanas. Os pacientes foram randomizados para receber placebo ou LEV, titulado a cada duas semanas de 20 mg/kg/dia ou 1.000 mg/dia até 60 mg/kg/dia ou 3.000 mg/dia. Resultados: LEV foi significativamente superior ao placebo (p=0,0031), com 38,7% dos participantes no grupo LEV e 14,3% no grupo controle que apresentaram redução das crises focais. LEV apresenta bom perfil de segurança com eventos adversos semelhantes ao placebo. Conclusão: Corroborando com os resultados da literatura, o levetiracetam mostra-se eficaz e seguro para crianças e adultos com epilepsia focal refratária.

ABSTRACT Background: Epilepsy affects about 50 million people worldwide and around 30% of these patients have refractory epilepsy, with potential consequences regarding quality of life, morbidity and premature mortality. Objective: The aim of treatment with antiseizure medications (ASMs) is to allow patients to remain without seizures, with good tolerability. Levetiracetam is a broad-spectrum ASM with a unique mechanism of action that differs it from other ASMs. It has been shown to be effective and safe for treating adults and children with epilepsy. Methods: This was a phase III, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of levetiracetam in children and adults (4-65 years) as an adjuvant treatment for focal-onset seizures. It was conducted among 114 patients undergoing treatment with up to three ASMs. The primary efficacy analysis was based on the proportion of patients who achieved a reduction of ≥ 50% in the mean number of focal seizures per week, over a 16-week treatment period. The patients were randomized to receive placebo or levetiracetam, titrated every two weeks from 20 mg/kg/day or 1,000 mg/day up to 60 mg/kg/day or 3,000 mg/day. Results: Levetiracetam was significantly superior to placebo (p = 0.0031); 38.7% of the participants in the levetiracetam group and 14.3% in the control group shows reductions in focal seizures. Levetiracetam was seen to have a favorable safety profile and an adverse event rate similar to that of placebo. Conclusion: Corroborating the results in the literature, levetiracetam was shown to be effective and safe for children and adults with refractory focal-onset epilepsy.

ABSTRACT Background: We have developed a micropropagation technique methodology to clonal micro-garden formation of Bambusa vulgaris selected adult plant. Collection site (i.e., stock plant cultivated in different environments) and seasonality of shoot collection (i.e., months of the year) effects on in vitro culture were evaluated. Explants that showed normal development were ex vitro rooted in mini-incubator system, and three culture media (WPM, MS and deionized water + agar) supplemented with plant growth regulators (IBA, NAA and BAP) and antibiotic (streptomycin sulphate and culture medium free - control) were evaluated. Micropropagated plants were acclimatized in a shadow house and transferred to a semi-hydroponic system for establishment of a clonal micro-garden. The efficacy of the cloning protocol was determined with genetic fidelity analysis by ISSR molecular markers. Results: Considering all inoculations, 21.9% of nodal segments were in vitro established in nine shoot collections. The rooting percentage was 36.6%, and no interactions were observed between the use of culture medium and antibiotic. Culture medium free antibiotic resulted in 80.0% of survival and 50.0% of adventitious rooting. Micropropagated plants presented adequate growth and adaptation to ex vitro conditions in the clonal micro-garden. Molecular analyses by ISSR markers indicated the absence of genetic variations, and histological analyses revealed normal adventitious root formation originating from meristematic cells. Conclusion: The formation of a clonal micro-garden was demonstrated, proving the feasibility of the tested technique. Our results contribute to the development of a clonal propagation protocol for B. vulgaris selected adult plants.

SUMMARY: Few studies have focused on the in vitro multiplication methods for Eucalyptus cloeziana. In this work we developed an indirect organogenesis protocol to obtain micropropagated plants. The interactions of plant growth regulators in juvenile tissues were evaluated. Hypocotyl, cotyledon and root tissues obtained from in vitro germinated seedlings were subjected to combinations of α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), thidiazuron (TDZ) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). In vitro callogenesis, adventitious bud induction, shoot elongation, and ex vitro survival and rooting were evaluated. Callogenic structures were observed in all evaluated tissues. Morphogenic characteristics related to the meristematic center was observed. The tissues that presented the callus mass were subcultured in a regeneration culture medium supplemented with 1.0 mg L-1 of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Only hypocotyl and cotyledon induced adventitious bud and shoot elongation. Hypocotyl subjected to 2.0 mg L-1 TDZ had the highest number of elongated shoots. The two tissues (i.e., hypocotyl and cotyledon) combined with thidiazuron were characterized by the ex vitro survival of microcuttings and by adventitious rooting. Results confirmed tissue culture efficiency for microplants production by indirect organogenesis from hypocotyl and cotyledon cultivated with TDZ, and its implementation can be an alternative for forest tree breeding programs of E. cloeziana.

RESUMEN: Pocos estudios se han centrado en los métodos de multiplicación in vitro para Eucalyptus cloeziana. En este trabajo se desarrolló un protocolo de organogénesis indirecta para obtener plantas micropropagadas. Se evaluaron las interacciones de los reguladores del crecimiento en tejidos juveniles. Los tejidos del hipocótilo, cotiledón y raíces obtenidos de plántulas germinadas in vitro se sometieron a combinaciones de ácido α-naftaleneacético (ANA), tidiazurón (TDZ) y ácido 2,4-diclorofenoxiacético (2,4-D). Se evaluaron la callogénesis in vitro, la inducción adventicia de yemas, el alargamiento de brotes, y la sobrevivencia y enraizamiento ex vitro. Se observaron estructuras calogénicas en todos los tejidos evaluados. Se observaron características morfogénicas relacionadas con la formación de centros meristemáticos. Los tejidos que presentaron la masa del callo fueron subcultivados en medio de cultivo de regeneración suplementado con 1,0 mg L-1 de 6-bencilaminopurina (BAP), y solo los tejidos del hipocótilo y cotiledón formaron yemas adventicias y brotes alargados. Los tejidos del hipocótilo sometidos a 2,0 mg L-1 de tidiazuron obtuvieron mayor número de brotes alargados. Los dos tejidos (hipocótilo y cotiledón) combinados con TDZ se caracterizaron por sobrevivencia y el enraizamiento adventicio ex vitro de las microestacas. Los resultados confirmaron la eficiencia del cultivo de tejidos para la producción de microplantas por organogénesis indirecta a partir de tejidos del hipocótilo y cotiledón cultivados con TDZ y su implementación puede ser una alternativa para los programas de mejoramiento forestal de E. cloeziana.

Resumo Lafoensia pacari é empregada na medicina tradicional no cerrado Brasileiro para tratar feridas. É importante desenvolver estudos para melhor compreender como ocorre a atividade biológica de L. pacari . O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade cicatrizante do extrato das folhas de L. pacari em modelo animal. O extrato vegetal foi preparado a partir de plantas oriundas de Goiânia-GO, Brasil. Na avaliação da atividade cicatrizante, foi empregado o modelo de feridas cutâneas em ratos. Análise macroscópica, morfométrica e histológica das feridas também foram realizadas. Na cromatografia de camada delgada foi detectada a presença de taninos hidrolisáveis e na cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência, pôde-se sugerir a presença de elagitaninos. Na avaliação das feridas cutâneas em ratos foi possível observar que o tratamento com extrato de L. pacari a 10% (m/v) proporcionou uma redução no tempo de cicatrização de feridas cutâneas em ratos, com aumento significativo das variáveis envolvidas na cicatrização, como número de vasos sanguíneos e a produção de colágeno. Portanto, este estudo mostra que o potencial cicatrizante de L. pacari pode estar relacionado à presença de elagitaninos, o que corrobora com relatos etnofarmacológicos deste vegetal.

Abstract Lafoensia pacari has been used in traditional folk medicine in Brazilian Cerrado to treat wounds. It is important to develop studies that can clarify how the biological activity of L. pacari occurs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the healing activity of L. pacari leaves extract in an animal model. The extract was prepared from plants cultivated in Goiania-GO, Brazil. The healing activity was assayed using cutaneous wound model in rats, and macroscopic, morphometric and histological analysis of wounds were also conducted. The presence of hydrolysable tannins was detected in thin layer chromatography and in high performance liquid chromatography analysis, may be suggested the presence of ellagitannins. In the evaluation of cutaneous wounds in rats it was possible to observe that the treatment with 10% (w/v) L. pacari extract provided a reduction in the time of cutaneous wound healing, with a significant increase in variables involved in healing, such as the number of blood vessels and collagen production. Therefore, this study shows that L. pacari wound healing potential may be related to the presence of ellagitannins and corroborates to ethnopharmacological reports regarding this plant.

ABSTRACT The relevance of Eucalyptus dunnii has been evidenced mainly for its wood quality and cold tolerance among cultivated subtropical eucalypts. However, rooting is a challenge for its propagation, particularly when adult material is involved. This study aimed to assess the mixotrophism on the in vitro elongation and adventitious rooting phases in Eucalyptus dunnii microcutting. The experimental material used was obtained from a ministumps of Eucalyptus dunnii clones. In order to evaluate gas exchange and sucrose supplementation on in vitro elongation and adventitious rooting, the experiment was prepared in a 3×4 factorial arrangements with three forms of sealing (rigid polypropylene caps with no membrane (0/M), with a membrane (1/M), with three membranes (3/M) and four sucrose concentrations (0, 10, 20 and 30 g.L-1). At 30 days in the elongation phase it was evaluated (length, number of shoots per explant, oxidation, bud vigor, pigment content, leaf area and anatomy) and rooting (length, root diameter and rooting). Results show that sucrose should be added in the culture medium for in vitro elongation and can be reduced to concentrations between 10 and 20 g.L-1. In vitro rooting requires the use of 30 g.L-1 of sucrose. The use of flasks with membranes that allow gas exchange is an effective alternative to promote the in vitro elongation and adventitious rooting of Eucalyptus dunnii microcutting.

Resumen Objetivo: Evaluar el alcance, las características y el riesgo de suicidio de los indígenas de Tabatinga, en la Amazonia brasileira. Métodos: Se utilizó una estrategia de vigilancia activa del suicidio y se examinaron los registros de mayores de 9 años, de 2007-2011, del Ministerio de Salud, la Secretaría Municipal de Salud, el Distrito Sanitario Especial Indígena Alto Río Solimões, el Hospital Militar de Tabatinga, la Fundación Nacional del Indio y la notaría del Registro Civil. Las tasas ajustadas se calcularon utilizando el método directo, según la edad. Se realizó un análisis descriptivo y se consideró que las pruebas de hipótesis eran significativas si p < 0,05. Resultados: El alcance del suicidio indígena fue del 82,8%, ya que 11 (17,2%) se clasificaron como suicidios ocultos. Alrededor del 70,0% de la probabilidad de suicidio de los varones se situó a los 15-29 años y la de las mujeres, a los 12-20 años. En el 17,2% de la muestra, se registró consumo de alcohol antes de la muerte y relación parental entre las víctimas. La tasa de mortalidad ajustada corregida fue 111,7/100.000 (IC95%, 84,6-148,6). Conclusiones: El riesgo de suicidio de los indígenas de Tabatinga es muy alto. Las estrategias de afrontamiento deben considerar la compleja relación entre el suicidio y el consumo de alcohol, las diferencias de sexo y la existencia de grupos vulnerables, como los jóvenes, especialmente aquellos con parientes cercanos que ya cometieron suicidio.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the coverage, characteristics and the risk of suicide in the indigenous people of Tabatinga in the Brazilian Amazon. Methods: An active surveillance strategy for suicide cases was used: records of the Ministry of Health, the Municipal Health Secretariat, the Special Indigenous Health District of the Upper River Solimões (Distrito Sanitario Especial Indígena Alto Río Solimões), the Military Hospital of Tabatinga, the National Indian Foundation (Fundación Nacional del Indio) and the civil registry offices were examined from 2007 to 2011 for individuals over 9 years of age. Adjusted rates were estimated using the direct method and according to age. A descriptive analysis was performed and the hypothesis tests were considered significant if p-values were <0.05. Results: The coverage of indigenous suicide was 82.8%, since 11 (17.2%) were classified as hidden suicides. For men between 15 and 29 years of age, and for women aged from 12 to 20 years, the probability of suicide was around 70.0%. In 17.2% of the sample there was a record of alcohol consumption before death and relationship between victims. The corrected adjusted mortality rate was 111.7/100,000 (95% CI, 84.6-148.6). Conclusions: The risk of suicide in the indigenous people of the Tabatinga is very high. Coping strategies should consider the complex relationship between suicide and alcohol consumption, gender differences and the existence of vulnerable groups, such as young people, especially those with close relatives who have committed suicide.

ABSTRACT Objective to estimate the prevalence of Burnout Syndrome, and identify the sociodemographic, occupational, lifestyle, and health profile of multi-professional healthcare residents at a public university in Bahia, Brazil. Methods a descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 63 residents, using the Maslach Burnout Inventory and a questionnaire on sociodemographic, labor, lifestyle, and health issues. Results on examining the dimensions of the syndrome, 82.5% were found to present high levels of emotional exhaustion; 55.5%, moderate levels of depersonalization; and 88.8%, high levels of diminished professional fulfilment. Burnout occurred most often in nurses (50%), professionals working in hospitals (71.4%) and recent graduates (mean 2.1 years), while 60.3% of the residents regarded their diet at unhealthy, and 29.5% were overweight. Conclusion the results indicate a significant prevalence of Burnout Syndrome, and marked changes in the three dimensions of the syndrome were found in 22.2% of the residents.

RESUMEN Objetivo estimar la prevalencia del Síndrome de Burnout e identificar el perfil sociodemográfico, laboral, estilo de vida y salud de residentes multiprofesionales de salud de una universidad pública de Bahía, Brasil. Método estudio transversal, descriptivo, realizado junto a 63 residentes. Se utilizó el Maslach Burnout Inventory y un cuestionario que contenía cuestiones sociodemográficas, laborales, estilo de vida y salud. Resultados al analizar las dimensiones del síndrome, el 82,5% presentó un alto nivel de agotamiento emocional; 55,5% nivel moderado de despersonalización y 88,8% nivel alto de reducida realización profesional. Se destaca la mayor ocurrencia de Burnout en enfermeros (50%), profesionales actuantes en el ámbito hospitalario (71,4%) y recién graduados (promedio 2,1 años). El 60,3% de los residentes consideró no tener una alimentación sana y el 29,5% presentó un exceso de peso. Conclusión los resultados apuntan a una prevalencia significativa de síndrome de Burnout y se encontraron grandes alteraciones en las tres dimensiones del síndrome en el 22,2% de los residentes.

RESUMO Objetivo estimar a prevalência da Síndrome de Burnout e identificar o perfil sociodemográfico, laboral, estilo de vida e saúde de residentes multiprofissionais de saúde de uma Universidade pública da Bahia, Brasil. Metodologia estudo transversal, descritivo, realizado com 63 residentes. Utilizou-se o Maslach Burnout Inventory e um questionário contendo questões sociodemográficas, laborais, estilo de vida e saúde. Resultados ao analisar as dimensões da síndrome, 82,5% apresentaram nível alto de exaustão emocional; 55,5% nível moderado de despersonalização e 88,8% nível alto de reduzida realização profissional. Destaca-se a maior ocorrência do Burnout em enfermeiros (50%), profissionais atuantes no âmbito hospitalar (71,4%) e em recém-formados (média 2,1 anos). 60,3% dos residentes consideraram não ter uma alimentação saudável e 29,5% apresentaram excesso de peso. Conclusão os resultados apontam uma prevalência significativa de síndrome de burnout , sendo encontradas altas alterações nas três dimensões da síndrome em 22,2% dos residentes.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of powder cinnamon in the diet of Japanese quails, regarding their performance and egg quality. A total of 360 quails, 18 weeks old, were distributed in a completely randomized design with five treatments and six replicates of 12 animals. The experimental period lasted 84 days. The treatments were the inclusion of 0; 3.0; 6.0; 9.0 and 12.0 g kg-1 of cinnamon powder in the diet. The performance and quality of eggs produced were evaluated. A sensorial analysis of the eggs was carried out to evaluate the color of the egg yolk, the taste of the egg and the purchase intention. There was no significant effect on the performance and egg quality variables, except for the specific gravity and color of the yolk, which increased linearly. The evaluators presented a higher intention to purchase eggs from the treatment with 6g kg-1 of cinnamon addition in the diet. We concluded that the inclusion of 12.0 g kg-1 of cinnamon powder in the diet for laying quail does not affect the performance and the taste of the eggs, nevertheless, this level of inclusion provides an improvement in the specific gravity and color of the yolk.

Resumo Até o presente momento, o último trecho livre de barramentos no Alto Rio Paraná não foi completamente investigado e essa realidade é preocupante frente às taxas atuais de extinção de espécies. Objetivo Nesse trabalho, foi realizado um inventário dos taxa de macrófitas aquáticas nos últimos 230 km livres de barramento do Alto Rio Paraná. Métodos As macrófitas foram inventariadas na zona litorânea de 27 estações amostrais em novembro de 2013 e maio e novembro de 2014. Descrições gerais sobre aspectos taxonômicos de macrófitas e sobre as formas de vida foram explorados. Complementarmente, foram utilizadas curvas de acumulação de espécies e técnicas de ordenação para sumarizar a variação na composição das espécies de macrófitas. Resultados Foram registrados 71 taxa de macrófitas pertencentes a 35 famílias. A maioria das espécies foi classificada nas seguintes categorias: emergentes, flutuantes livres, anfíbias e submersas enraizadas. No canal principal do rio, as espécies mais frequentes foram Eichhornia azurea, E. crassipes e Paspalum repens. Nas confluências dos tributários, Ludwigia sp., E.azurea e Polygonum ferrugineum foram as mais representativas, enquanto nas lagoas, Ludwigia sp., Oxycaryum cubense e E. azurea se destacaram. Em relação à composição de espécies, os locais de amostragem no Alto Rio Paraná foram mais influenciados pela invasora Hydrilla verticillata, enquanto as lagoas foram mais caracterizadas por espécies como Scleria melaleuca, Panicum maximum, Thelypteris sp., entre outras. Conclusões Em geral, esse estudo apontou que a área do Alto Rio Paraná apresenta um grande número de espécies de macrófitas. Ademais, a ocorrência de espécies invasoras dentro do trecho investigado chama atenção para cuidados quanto a potenciais impactos, para os quais, ações de manejo podem ser necessárias.

Abstract The last undammed stretch of the Upper Paraná River in the Brazilian territory is, to date, not completely inventoried, which rises concerns given the rapid rates of species extinctions. Aim Here, we provide an inventory of macrophyte taxa recorded in the last undammed 230 km stretch of the Upper Paraná River. Methods We inventoried macrophyte taxa in 27 sampling stations including lakes, the main channel of the river, and the tributary confluences in November 2013 and in May and November 2014. Macrophyte were sampled in littoral zones. We explored taxonomic and life form aspects of the recorded species. We used species accumulation curves and ordination techniques to summarize the variation in richness and composition of macrophyte species. Results We recorded 71 macrophyte taxa in 35 families. Most species were emergent, amphibian, free-floating, and rooted submerged. At the main channel of the Upper Paraná River, Eichhornia azurea, E. crassipes, and Paspalum repens represented the most frequent species. The most frequent species in the tributary confluences were Ludwigia sp., E. azurea, and Polygonum ferrugineum, while in lakes, Ludwigia sp., Oxycaryum cubense, and E. azurea were the most representative taxa. In regard to macrophyte composition, the invasive Hydrilla verticillata mostly influenced sites in the Upper Paraná River, in the ordination space, while floodplain lakes were mostly characterized by the presence of species such as Scleria melaleuca, Panicum maximum, and Thelypteris sp., among others. Conclusions Our study indicates that the last undammed stretch of the Upper Paraná River contains a large number of macrophyte species, suggesting that this stretch is an important area for the conservation of macrophyte species. In addition, the occurrence of invasive species (e.g., Hydrilla verticillata) within the investigated stretch deserves attention in terms of potential impacts for which management action may be necessary.
