Abstract Introduction: Chronic kidney disease is usually asymptomatic, and its diagnosis depends on laboratory tests, with emphasis on serum creatinine and proteinuria. Objective: To assess knowledge on the role of serum creatinine as a biomarker of kidney function in a sample of the Brazilian population. Method: Cross-sectional observational study conducted in São Paulo (SP, Brazil), in which a random adult population was interviewed. Results: A total of 1138 subjects were interviewed, with a median age of 36 years old (27–52); 55.1% were female. Regarding the “creatinine” biomarker, 40.6% stated they had never performed such a test. When asked about their knowledge on the usefulness of this exam, only 19.6% knew its function. The other responses were “I don’t know” (71.6%), evaluating heart function (0.9%) and liver function (7.8%). Of those who reported they had already taken a creatinine test, only 29.4% correctly identified the role of creatinine. When dividing the groups into “knows” and “does not know” the function of creatinine, a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was observed regarding level of education, female sex, being a healthcare student/worker, having ever measured creatinine, knowing someone with kidney disease and older age. In the multivariate analysis, the main variable related to knowing the creatinine role was having previously taken the test (OR 5.16; 95% CI 3.16–8.43, p < 0.001). Conclusion: There is a significant lack of knowledge about creatinine and its use in checkups. The results indicate that greater efforts are needed from healthcare professionals to raise awareness on the role of serum creatinine.

Resumo Introdução: A doença renal crônica costuma ser assintomática e seu diagnóstico depende da realização de exames laboratoriais, com destaque para a creatinina sérica e pesquisa de proteinúria. Objetivo: Avaliar em uma amostra da população brasileira o conhecimento sobre o papel da creatinina sérica como marcador de função renal. Método: Estudo observacional transversal realizado na cidade de São Paulo (SP, Brasil), em que foi entrevistada uma população adulta aleatória. Resultados: Foram entrevistados 1138 indivíduos, com idade mediana de 36 anos (27–52); 55,1% do sexo feminino. Com relação ao marcador “creatinina”, 40,6% afirmaram que nunca realizaram tal dosagem. Quando questionados quanto ao conhecimento sobre a utilidade desse exame, somente 19,6% sabiam a sua função. As outras respostas foram “não sei” (71,6%), avaliar o funcionamento do coração (0,9%) e fígado (7,8%). Dos que afirmaram já terem realizado o exame de creatinina, somente 29,4% acertaram a função da creatinina. Ao dividir os grupos em “sabe” e “não sabe” a função da creatinina, percebeu-se diferença estatisticamente significante (p < 0,05) em relação ao grau de escolaridade, sexo feminino, ser aluno/trabalhador da saúde, ter dosado creatinina alguma vez, conhecer alguém com doença renal e maior idade. Na análise multivariada, a principal variável relacionada com conhecer a função da creatinina foi ter realizado o exame anteriormente (OR 5,16; IC 95% 3,16–8,43, p < 0,001). Conclusão: Há grande desconhecimento sobre a creatinina e seu uso em check-ups. Os resultados indicam que é necessário maior esforço por parte dos profissionais de saúde para divulgar o papel da creatinina sérica.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to identify the relevance of hospitalizations for congenital hip deformities in Bahia. Methods: This is a retrospective epidemiological study in public databases. Descriptors in health sciences: “congenital hip dysplasia”, “congenital hip dislocation”, and “congenital dislocation hip”. This is qualitative-quantitative research with the analysis of secondary data and cross-sectional typologies in the databases of the Ministry of Health – Health Information (TABNET), made available by the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). Results: Bahia was the third Brazilian state with the highest number of hospitalizations, registering 1481 cases. The municipalities in Bahia with the highest prevalence were Itanhém, Salvador, and Barreiras, with 912, 445, and 20 cases, respectively. Conclusions: The elevated number of congenital hip deformities reflects a public health problem, requiring investments in public policies.

RESUMO Objetivo: Identificar a relevância das internações por deformidades congênitas do quadril na Bahia. Métodos: Este é um estudo epidemiológico retrospectivo, feito em bases de dados públicas. Descritores em ciências da saúde: “displasia congênita de quadril”, “Hip Dislocation Congenital” AND “Luxação congênita de quadril”. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualiquantitativa, com análise de dados secundários e tipologia transversal nas bases de dados do Ministério da Saúde — Informações de Saúde (TABNET), disponibilizados pelo Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde (DATASUS). Resultados: A Bahia foi o terceiro estado brasileiro com maior número de internações, registrando 1.481 casos. Os municípios baianos com maiores prevalências foram Itanhém, Salvador e Barreiras, com 912, 445 e 20 casos, respectivamente. Conclusão: O elevado número de deformidades congênitas do quadril reflete um problema de saúde pública, necessitando de investimentos em políticas públicas.

ABSTRACT: Nowadays, alternative methods that do not use formaldehyde to preserve cadavers must be used due to this substance’s toxicity. Synthetic models are a training option for teaching, but cost makes their use unviable in most underdeveloped countries. The present study’s main objective was to develop a model for education and researching thorax radiology in cadavers of chemically prepared dogs. Megaesophagus, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, and bronchography, as well as pulmonary insufflation, were simulated in 32 dogs cadavers, which received 150 mL/kg of pure ethyl alcohol solution with 5% glycerin followed by injection of 120 mL/kg of a solution containing 20% sodium chloride, 1% sodium nitrite and 1% sodium nitrate; they were kept refrigerated between 2 to 6 °C, for 30, 60, 90 or 120 days (G30, G60, G90, G120). There was no contamination, putrid odor, or subcutaneous emphysema. The pulmonary insufflation was kept, and the color and the consistency were similar to a fresh corpse after 120 days of conservation. It was possible to perform radiographic procedures, and almost all affections could be greatly mimicked. Megaesophagus and bronchography were easily simulated. Pneumothorax was the most challenging condition to be reproduced, especially in cadavers with some liquid in the thorax. The alcoholic and curing salt solutions are an embalming alternative with low financial and environmental costs and proved to preserve corpses.

RESUMO: Nos dias atuais, métodos alternativos e que não utilizem o formaldeído para conservação de cadáveres devem ser empregados, devido à toxicidade desse agente. Modelos sintéticos são opção de treinamento para o ensino, mas geralmente o preço inviabiliza seu uso na maioria dos países subdesenvolvidos. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi desenvolver um modelo visando ao ensino e pesquisa da radiologia torácica em cadáveres de cães quimicamente preparados. Foram simulados megaesôfago, efusão pleural, pneumotórax e broncografia, além de insuflação pulmonar, em 32 cadáveres de cães, que receberam 150 mL/kg de solução de álcool etílico puro com 5% de glicerina seguido de injeção de 120 mL/kg de solução contendo 20% de cloreto de sódio, 1% de nitrito de sódio e 1% de nitrato de sódio, mantidos sob refrigeração entre 2 e 6 graus, por 30, 60, 90 ou 120 dias (G30, G60, G90, G120). Não houve contaminação, odor pútrido ou enfisema subcutâneo. A insuflação pulmonar foi mantida, e a cor e a consistência foram semelhantes a um cadáver fresco após 120 dias de conservação. Em todos os grupos foi possível realizar os procedimentos radiográficos e quase todas afecções puderam ser grandemente mimetizadas. O megaesôfago e a broncografia foram facilmente simuladas. O pneumotórax foi a afecção mais difícil de ser simulada principalmente nos cadáveres com um pouco de líquido na cavidade torácica. A solução alcoólica e de sal de cura são uma alternativa de embalsamamento com baixo custo financeiro e ambiental e comprovadamente conservam cadáveres.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess mothers’ knowledge on sun exposure related to serum vitamin D levels in the neonatal period. Methods: Observational, analytical and cross-sectional study, carried out from August 2020 to May 2021 through a questionnaire directed to mothers of newborns, in a maternity hospital in Southern Brazil. Results: From 141 interviewees, 132 (93.6%) believe it is important to expose the neonate to sun, 101 (71.6%) think this exposure can increase vitamin D levels, 86 (61%) received such information from a doctor, 108 (76.6%) believe there are no risks of sun exposure, 88 (62.4%) claim it isn´t necessary to use any kind of protection, 96 (68.1%) said that only exposure to the sun was necessary to maintain adequate levels of vitamin D during the neonatal period. Only two mothers (1.4%) claim that you should not exposure the neonate to the sun, and only one (0.7%) stated that sun expose can cause skin problems. Conclusions: Most mothers lack satisfactory knowledge about sun exposure related to serum vitamin D levels in the neonatal period. The need to inform and clarify the population about sun exposure during this period is remarkable, in addition to disseminating the proper way to maintain serum levels of vitamin D.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar o conhecimento das mães acerca da exposição solar relacionada com níveis séricos de vitamina D no período neonatal. Métodos: Estudo observacional, analítico e transversal, realizado de agosto de 2020 a maio de 2021 por meio de questionário dirigido às mães de recém-nascidos, em uma maternidade no sul do Brasil. Resultados: De 141 entrevistadas, 132 (93,6%) acreditam ser importante expor o lactente ao sol no primeiro mês de vida, 101 (71,6%) acham que essa exposição aumenta os níveis de vitamina D, 86 (61,0%) receberam tal informação de um médico, 108 (76,6%) acreditam que expor o neonato ao sol não causa riscos para a saúde, 88 (62,4%) acham que não é necessário usar proteção contra radiação solar ao expor o neonato ao sol, e 96 (68,1%) afirmaram que apenas a exposição ao sol basta para manter os níveis adequados de vitamina D durante o período neonatal. Apenas duas mães (1,4%) afirmaram que não se deve expor o neonato ao sol e uma (0,7%) que a exposição solar pode causar problemas de pele. Conclusões: A maioria das mães não possui conhecimento satisfatório acerca da exposição solar relacionada aos níveis séricos de vitamina D no período neonatal. É notável a necessidade de informar e esclarecer a população sobre a exposição solar nesse período, além de disseminar a maneira adequada de manter os níveis séricos de vitamina D.

ABSTRACT High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can induce oxidative stress. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 15 sessions of a HIIT protocol in Wistar rats on oxidative damage markers in different tissues (blood, muscle, liver and heart). Thus, animals weighing 250-300 g were used and randomly divided into 2 groups (n= 10): Control (CG) and animals submitted to HIIT (TG) through a swimming protocol. The results showed that HIIT increased the production of malondialdehyde (MDA) in TG animals: serum (306.75%), gastrocnemius muscle (259.2%), liver (452.6%) and heart (215%), while the concentration of sulfhydryl groups decreased: serum (40%), gastrocnemius muscle (44.7%), liver (44.6%) and heart (47.2%). Thus, it could be concluded that 15 HIIT sessions altered the redox state of Wistar rats due to increased oxidative damage markers in the analysed tissues.

Resumo Reportamos um evento em que Caiman crocodilus consome o acari-bodó Pterygoplichthys pardalis. Uma lista de itens predados por C. crocodilus foi compilada da literatura, incluindo vertebrados e invertebrados consumidos por esta espécie. O evento de predação foi observado na margem de uma lagoa na Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke, localizada na cidade de Manaus, estado do Amazonas, Brasil, durante estudos de campo em 2020. A busca bibliográfica revelou 250 presas conhecidas para esta espécie de jacaré, sendo 150 invertebrados (89 Insecta, 24 Crustacea, 14 Mollusca, 10 Arachnida, 10 Myriapoda, 2 Annelida e 1 Platyhelminthes) e 100 vertebrados (53 peixes, 16 répteis, 11 anfíbios, 10 aves e 10 mamíferos). Entre os peixes, apenas três espécies de Siluriformes foram identificados como presas de C. crocodilus: Hoplosternum littorale, Clarias batrachus e Ameiurus nebulosus. Portanto, P. pardalis representa uma nova espécie de presa para C. crocodilus. Nossa observação de campo e revisão da literatura reforçam C. crocodilus como predador generalista, com peixes sendo os itens de maior importância entre os vertebrados, na dieta da espécie.

Abstract We report an event of a Caiman crocodilus consuming the catfish Pterygoplichthys pardalis. A list of known prey items of C. crocodilus was also compiled from the literature, including known vertebrate and invertebrate items for this species. The predation event was observed at the margin of a lagoon in Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke, located in the municipality of Manaus, Amazonas state, Brazil, during a fieldwork study in 2020. The literature survey revealed 250 distinct prey items for this caiman, of which 150 are invertebrates (89 Insecta, 24 Crustacea, 14 Mollusca,10 Arachnida, 10 Myriapoda, 2 Annelida, and 1 Platyhelminthes) and 100 are vertebrates (53 fishes, 16 reptiles, 11 amphibians, 10 birds, and 10 mammals). Among fishes, only three Siluriformes have been taxonomically identified as C. crocodilus preys: Hoplosternum littorale, Clarias batrachus, and Ameiurus nebulosus. Therefore, the catfish P. pardalis represents a new prey specie for C. crocodilus. Our field observation and the presented literature review reinforce the view of C. crocodilus as a generalist predator, with fish as the most important vertebrate prey in the diet of this species.

Abstract The decision whether the bipotential gonadal anlage will become a testis or ovary is a critical step during sex determination and differentiation in fish. This process involves a complex and coordinated genetic cascade, which result in the differentiation of the somatic cells into ovary or testis. In this context, important genes of TGF-β superfamily appears have a pivotal role in this biological process of fish development. In this review, we showed the breakthrough in the last decades that engage the Anti-Müllerian hormone (Amh) as an important effector in this decision. Here we exposed studies with different species of fishes around of world have paved the way for clarifying the role of Amh in the regulation of the germ cells proliferation, which may influence the spermatogenesis and, sex determination and differentiation decision on teleost fish.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Hepatosplenic schistosomiasis is an endemic disease prevalent in tropical countries and is associated with a high incidence of portal vein thrombosis. Inflammatory changes caused by both parasitic infection and portal thrombosis can lead to the development of chronic liver disease with potential carcinogenesis. AIMS: To assess the incidence of portal vein thrombosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with schistosomiasis during long-term follow-up. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted involving patients with schistosomiasis followed up at our institution between 1990 and 2021. RESULTS: A total of 126 patients with schistosomiasis were evaluated in the study. The mean follow-up time was 16 years (range 5–31). Of the total, 73 (57.9%) patients presented portal vein thrombosis during follow-up. Six (8.1%) of them were diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma, all with portal vein thrombosis diagnosed more than ten years before. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with schistosomiasis and chronic portal vein thrombosis highlights the importance of a systematic long-term follow-up in this group of patients.

RESUMO RACIONAL: A esquistossomose hepatoesplênica é uma doença endêmica prevalente em países tropicais e está associada a uma alta incidência de trombose da veia porta. Alterações inflamatórias causadas tanto pela infecção parasitária quanto pela trombose portal podem levar ao desenvolvimento de doença hepática crônica com potencial carcinogênico. OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a incidência de trombose da veia porta e carcinoma hepatocelular em pacientes com esquistossomose durante um seguimento de longo prazo. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado estudo retrospectivo envolvendo pacientes com esquistossomose acompanhados em nossa instituição entre 1990 e 2021. RESULTADOS: Um total de 126 pacientes com esquistossomose foram avaliados no estudo. O tempo médio de acompanhamento foi de 16 anos (variando de 5 a 31). Do total, 73 (57,9%) pacientes apresentaram trombose da veia porta durante o seguimento e seis (8,1%) deles foram diagnosticados com carcinoma hepatocelular, todos com trombose da veia porta diagnosticada há mais de 10 anos. CONCLUSÕES: A incidência de carcinoma hepatocelular em pacientes com esquistossomose e trombose da veia porta crônica destaca a importância de um acompanhamento sistemático de longo prazo nesse grupo de pacientes.

Abstract: Introduction: Due to the high contamination rate and number of cases of the SARS-Cov-2, local authorities decreed the closure of universities and schools, which has forced these institutions to come up with innovative solutions for the continuation of their activities. Objective: The aim of this study is to assess both the impact and level of satisfaction amongst undergraduate students of the online teaching of theoretical anesthesiology as an alternative method to the face-to-face teaching as the latter is currently impaired by the difficulties imposed by the pandemic. Methodology: The teaching method chosen consisted of conducting online classes taught by a specialist using the Microsoft Teams platform. The level of knowledge of the participants was assessed through the application of questionnaires before and after each term of the course. Results: A total of 812 questionnaires were completed, with a significant increase of 41.61% in the average of correct answers (3.94 vs 5.57; p <0.001). Conclusion: The main focus of this study is that the e-learning of theoretical anesthesiology and its results showed considerable increase in the students’ knowledge. Also, it was observed that the levels of satisfaction were higher than the expectation levels.

Resumo: Introdução: Devido à alta taxa de contaminação do SARS-Cov-2 e ao surgimento de um grande número de casos, autoridades locais decretaram o fechamento de universidades e escolas, demandando a implementação de soluções inovadoras para a continuidade das atividades acadêmicas. Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo é avaliar o impacto e nível de satisfação do modelo de ensino teórico à distância de anestesiologia em alunos de graduação como método alternativo ao ensino presencial em virtude das dificuldades impostas pela pandemia. Metodologia: O método utilizado consistiu na realização de aulas online ministradas por professor especialista através da plataforma Microsoft Teams. O nível de conhecimento dos participantes foi avaliado por meio da aplicação de questionários antes e após cada módulo do curso. Resultados: Um total de 812 questionários foram preenchidos, tendo sido constatado um aumento significativo de 41,61% na média de acertos geral (3,94 vs 5,57; p < 0,001). Conclusão: O presente estudo trouxe o ensino teórico em anestesiologia à distância como foco principal e os seus resultados mostraram ganho de conhecimento considerável por parte dos participantes. Além disso, foram observados maiores níveis de satisfação em detrimento dos de expectativa.

ABSTRACT The rational exploitation of the land requires planning its agricultural use, which can be supported by the agricultural land suitability (ALS) assessment. The scheme to assess ALS proposed by Food Agricultural Organization (FAO) has been adopted in Brazil based on guiding charts for subtropical, humid tropical and semi-arid tropical climate. However, the guiding chart used for the semi-arid region has dramatically limited the ALS in drylands on which rainfed agriculture has been practiced. In this study, an adequation for the ALS assessment regarding the edaphoclimatic conditions of semi-arid region was proposed to improve the representation of agricultural areas and to allow a better planning of soil conservation practices. The ALS of the south region of Ceará State (Brazil) was assessed according to the FAO scheme and its initial adaptation to the Brazilian conditions; subsequently, this assessment was obtained by two adequations. Adequation I disregarded the limiting factor of water availability, while adequation II, besides disregarding the factor of water availability, established new limits for the classes of effective soil depth. The adequations resulted in an increase of 177.19 % in the areas with regular suitability for crops to the detriment of areas with restricted suitability for crops and areas with suitability only for pasture or grazing lands. The adequations increased the agricultural suitability in 41.26 % of the area of the mapping units, and 16.77 % of them were due to the modifications related to the effective soil depth, while the other 26.35 % were due to the changes related to water availability. The results related to water availability were equivalent to those observed through the dynamic analysis of land-use and cover associated with the rainfall, which demonstrated an increase in the areas for rainfed agriculture and a reduction in fallow and pasture areas in the years with rainfall within the climatic normality. The areas considered suitable for crop production with the adequation of the scheme may be included in soil conservation programs.

This investigation describes the synthesis of eugenol analogs presenting 1,2,3-triazole fragments and evaluation of their antileishmanial activity. The alkylation of guaiacol (1) with allyl bromide afforded 1-(allyloxy)-2-methoxybenzene (2) (93% yield). The Claisen rearrangement conducted with 1 gave ortho eugenol (3) (82% yield). Alkylation procedures performed with 3 produced 1-allyl-3-methoxy-2-(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)benzene (4) (73% yield) and 1-allyl-3-methoxy-2-(pent-4-yn-1-yloxy)benzene (6) (53% yield). The copper(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions involving alkynes 4 and 6 with different benzylic azides afforded twenty-two eugenol analogs with 1,2,3-triazole functionalities (48-93% yield). We screened the compounds at 10 μmol L 1 against Leishmania braziliensis intracellular amastigotes during macrophage infection. The action of these compounds was compared with the known leishmanicidal drug amphotericin B. None of the analogs were toxic to macrophages at 10 μmol L-1. The cytotoxic concentration at 50% (CC50), effective concentration at 50% (EC50), and selectivity index (SI) were determined to the best compounds 4-((2-allyl-6-methoxy)phenoxymethyl)-1-(4-chlorobenzyl)-1 H-1,2,3-triazole (8c) and 4-((2-allyl-6-methoxy)phenoxymethyl)-1-(4-trifluoromethoxybenzyl)-1 H-1,2,3-triazole (8h). They showed a significant leishmanicidal effect, with EC50 of 28.09 µmol L-1 (8c) and 52.03 µmol L-1 (8h). The SIs were 9.7 for 8c and > 5.7 for 8h. These compounds have the potential as new leishmanicidal agents against L. braziliensis and may represent a starting point for the development of alternative treatments for cutaneous leishmaniasis.

ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed a health crisis around the world. Health professionals are frequently exposed to stressors that put them at high risk for the development or progression of disabling mental disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To understand how pandemic stressors have affected the mental health of healthcare workers, our group conducted a longitudinal and nationwide survey. We investigated the occurrence of traumatic events related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the association between exposure to these events and PTSD symptomatology. Importantly, we also investigated factors that might increase or decrease the risk for PTSD. Depression symptoms were also investigated. The results of the first wave of the project were published in a series of three articles, each focused on different risk or protective factors. The results showed that female sex, young age, a lack of adequate personal protective equipment, social isolation and a previous history of mental illness were consistent predictors of PTSD symptoms. Healthcare workers who reported high levels of peritraumatic tonic immobility, a defensive response that is involuntary, reflexive, and evoked by an intense and inescapable threat, also exhibited an increase in the probability of being diagnosed with PTSD. On the other hand, professional recognition had a negative relationship with PTSD and depression symptoms, emerging as a significant protective factor for psychological health. The identification of protective and risk factors in these situations is crucial to guide the adoption of long-term measures in work environments that will enhance the psychological health of these professionals.

RESUMO A pandemia de COVID-19 impôs uma crise de saúde no mundo. Profissionais de saúde foram frequentemente expostos a estressores que os colocam em alto risco para o desenvolvimento ou progressão de transtornos mentais incapacitantes, incluindo o transtorno de estresse pós-traumático (TEPT). Para entender como esses estressores afetaram a saúde mental desses profissionais, nosso grupo realizou um estudo longitudinal nacional. Investigamos a ocorrência de eventos traumáticos especificamente relacionados à pandemia e a associação entre a exposição a esses eventos traumáticos e a sintomatologia do TEPT. É importante ressaltar que também investigamos fatores que podem aumentar ou diminuir o risco de TEPT. Sintomas de depressão também foram investigados. Os resultados da primeira onda do projeto foram publicados em uma série de três artigos, cada um focado em diferentes fatores de risco ou proteção. Os resultados mostraram que sexo feminino, idade jovem, falta de equipamento de proteção individual adequado, isolamento social e história prévia de doença mental foram preditores consistentes de sintomas de TEPT. Os profissionais de saúde que relataram altos níveis de imobilidade tônica, uma resposta peritraumática involuntária e reflexa evocada em situações de ameaça intensa e inescapável, exibiram aumento na probabilidade de um provável diagnóstico de TEPT. Por outro lado, reconhecimento profissional teve relação negativa com sintomas de TEPT e depressão, emergindo como importante fator de proteção para a saúde mental. Identificar fatores protetores ou de risco nessas situações é fundamental para orientar a adoção de medidas de longo prazo nos ambientes de trabalho que melhorem a saúde mental desses profissionais.

ABSTRACT: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a viral disease that affects several animal species, including domestic and wildlife ones. The occurrence of an FMD outbreak can potentially cause a large negative impact on countries or regions’ livestock production and economy. Performed over several decades, mass herd vaccination has been the main strategy to control the disease. However, countries are beginning the stage of eradicating FMD, which involves suspending vaccinations. The present study carried out a risk classification for FMD occurrence in Goiás State, Brazil by evaluating and combining multiple risk factors involved in FMD introduction and dissemination. Data from 126,345 rural properties were collected and categorized by municipality. The risk factors were grouped into two modules and then scores for each module were obtained by adding and weighting the risk factors. These combined scores resulted in the final FMD occurrence risk score. Most of the municipalities, as well as the herds were found in the lowest likelihood levels. Variables linked to herd density and animal movement played a key role in the score composition. We believed that this model can be a useful tool in the decision-making process regarding actions and strategies related to FMD eradication.

RESUMO: A febre aftosa (FA) é uma doença viral, febril, aguda e altamente contagiosa que afeta várias espécies domésticas e silvestres. Sua ocorrência resulta em grandes impactos negativos na cadeia pecuária e na economia de um país ou região. A FA está presente na América do Sul desde o fim do século XIX gerando esforços de órgãos oficiais no combate à enfermidade com vistas à erradicação, o que possibilitará futuramente a retirada da vacina, fato previsto no estado de Goiás para o ano de 2021. Neste sentido, o presente estudo objetivou classificar o risco de ocorrência de FA nos rebanhos do estado de Goiás. Para tanto, avaliou-se e combinou-se vários fatores de risco (FR) ligados à introdução e disseminação da FA obtidos de dados de 126.345 propriedades rurais. Estes FR foram agrupados em módulos formados por caminhos de introdução e disseminação da FA. A combinação dos FR se deu por meio de adição, sendo em seguida ponderados por pesos atribuídos por especialistas. Foram gerados os escores de introdução e disseminação de FA em Goiás, possibilitando a classificação do risco de ocorrência da doença no estado. Identificou-se que a maioria do rebanho e do território goiano se encontra em baixos níveis de risco. Foi identificada complexa composição nos níveis de risco obtidos, indicando ampla variação dos fatores que compuseram os escores de risco, especialmente nos municípios de mais alto escore de ocorrência. Variáveis ligadas à densidade de rebanho e trânsito e movimentação de animais apresentaram importante participação na composição dos escores. Acreditamos que os resultados deste trabalho podem compor uma ferramenta importante na tomada de decisão sobre as ações e estratégias de combate à FA em Goiás, ao passo que posteriores avaliações e adaptações poderão ser realizadas para a validação do modelo proposto.

Abstract The objective of this work was to identify the effect of potassium rates on Bt transgenic resistance and damage caused by Spodoptera frugiperda in corn plants at different developmental stages. The experimental design was a randomized complete block in a 3x6 factorial arrangement, with three potassium rates (0, 45, and 90 kg ha-1) and six corn hybrids (20A55Hx, 30A77PW, AG1051, MG652PW, NS90VTPro2, and NS92VTPro), with three replicates. The hybrids were evaluated through the analysis of canonical variables. With low potassium rates, the effectiveness of the corn hybrids in controlling the S. frugiperda caterpillar decreases in the different phenological stages. The use of the Bt technology is more efficient under an adequate potassium rate of 90 kg ha-1 KCl.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar o efeito de doses de potássio sobre a resistência transgênica Bt e os danos causados por Spodoptera frugiperda em plantas de milho, em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 3x6, com três doses de potássio (0, 45 e 90 kg ha-1) e seis híbridos de milho (20A55Hx, 30A77PW, AG1051, MG652PW, NS90VTPro2 e NS92VTPro), com três repetições. Os híbridos foram avaliados por meio de análise de variáveis canônicas. Com doses baixas de potássio, a eficácia dos híbridos de milho no controle da lagarta S. frugiperda diminui nos diferentes estádios fenológicos. O uso da tecnologia Bt é mais eficiente quando sob dosagem adequada de potássio de 90 kg ha-1 KCl.
