Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the physiological, phenotypic, and gene expression parameters in genetically modified (GM) rice plants that overexpress the Oryza sativa Vacuolar H+-Pyrophosphatase 1 (OVP1) gene, compared with non-genetically modified (NGM) rice. GM and NGM plants of the BRSMG Curinga cultivar were evaluated in two experiments, in a laboratory and greenhouse, in a randomized complete block design, with four replicates. Agronomic traits of interest were estimated, and transcriptome analysis and gene expression quantification were carried out. GM plants showed a 31 and 21% higher number of spikelets per panicle and total number of grains per panicle, respectively, in comparison with NGM plants. Physiological changes occurred during the grain-filling stage, in which GM plants presented a photosynthetic rate and carboxylation efficiency 61 and 89% higher than those of NGM plants, respectively. The overexpression of the OVP1 gene favors the upregulation of some photosynthesis genes and the increase in the number of spikelets and in the photosynthetic rate, but does not favor the increase in grain yield.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os parâmetros fisiológicos, fenotípicos e de expressão gênica em plantas de arroz geneticamente modificadas (GM) que superexpressam o gene Oryza sativa Vacuolar H+-Pyrophosphatase 1 (OVP1), em comparação ao arroz não geneticamente modificado (NGM). Plantas GM e NGM da cultivar BRSMG Curinga foram avaliadas em dois experimentos, em laboratório e casa de vegetação, no delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Foram estimados caracteres agronômicos de interesse, e realizadas análise de transcritoma e quantificação da expressão gênica. Plantas GM apresentaram número de espiguetas por panícula e número total de grãos por panícula 31 e 21% maiores, respectivamente, em comparação às plantas NGM. Ocorreram alterações fisiológicas durante a fase de enchimento de grãos, em que as plantas GM apresentaram taxa fotossintética e eficiência de carboxilação 61 e 89% mais altas do que as das plantas NGM, respectivamente. A superexpressão do gene OVP1 favorece a indução de alguns genes da fotossíntese e o aumento do número de espiguetas e da taxa fotossintética, mas não favorece o aumento da produtividade de grãos.

BACKGROUND Leishmaniasis, a neglected disease caused by the parasite Leishmania, is treated with drugs associated with high toxicity and limited efficacy, in addition to constant reports of the emergence of resistant parasites. In this context, snake serums emerge as good candidates since they are natural sources with the potential to yield novel drugs. OBJECTIVES We aimed to show the antileishmanial effects of γCdcPLI, a phospholipase A2 inhibitor from Crotalus durissus collilineatus snake serum, against Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. METHODS Promastigotes forms were exposed to γCdcPLI, and we assessed the parasite viability and cell cycle, as well as invasion and proliferation assays. FINDINGS Despite the low cytotoxicity effect on macrophages, our data indicate that γCdcPLI has a direct effect on parasites promoting an arrest in the G1 phase and reduction in the G2/M phase at the highest dose tested. Moreover, this PLA2 inhibitor reduced the parasite infectivity when promastigotes were pre-treated. Also, we demonstrated that the γCdcPLI treatment modulated the host cell environment impairing early and late steps of the parasitism. MAIN CONCLUSIONS γCdcPLI is an interesting tool for the discovery of new essential targets on the parasite, as well as an alternative compound to improve the effectiveness of the leishmaniasis treatment. Resumo Objetivos: Identificar estratégias para melhorar conhecimentos, atitudes e práticas (CAP) sobre medidas de prevenção e controle da COVID-19 no mundo. Métodos: Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática de evidência quantitativa e qualitativa com busca nas bases de dados PubMed, LILACS e Scopus. A qualidade do relato e da metodologia dos estudos incluídos foi avaliada por meio da ferramenta do Joanna Briggs Institute. Resultados: De 2.196 registros identificados na busca, 12 estudos foram incluídos. A maioria avaliou estratégias educacionais (n=10), principalmente treinamentos baseados em simulação (n=6) para profissionais de saúde (n=9). Independente da estratégia ou público, todos os estudos identificaram melhorias em conhecimento (n=7), prática (n=7) e atitude (n=4). Entretanto, todos os estudos apresentaram pelo menos uma limitação de qualidade. Conclusões: Estratégias efetivas foram identificadas para melhorar CAP na prevenção e controle da COVID-19, especialmente para profissionais de saúde com treinamento baseado em simulação (baixa qualidade).

Summary Objectives: To identify strategies to improve knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) about prevention and control measures of COVID-19 in the world. Method: A systematic review of quantitative and qualitative evidence was conducted, searching PubMed, LILACS and Scopus databases. Reporting and methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. Results: Of 2,196 records identified in the search, 12 studies were included. Most studies evaluated educational strategies (n=10), mainly training based on simulation (n=6) for health professionals (n=9). Regardless of strategy or audience, all studies identified improvements in knowledge (n=7), practice (n=7), and attitude (n=4). However, all studies presented at least one quality limitation. Conclusions: Effective strategies have been identified to improve CAP in the prevention and control of COVID-19, especially aimed at healthcare professionals with simulation-based training (low quality).

Resumo O entendimento de relações ecológicas e toxicológicas envolvendo culturas geneticamente modificadas (GM) e agentes de controle biológico é de grande importância para discussões relativas à compatibilidade de culturas GM com estratégias de manejo integrado e manejo de resistência de pragas. Este trabalho avaliou o comportamento de busca e a capacidade predatória de Orius insidiosus (Say) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) e Doru luteipes (Scudder) (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) sobre ovos e lagartas de Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) resistente ou não à proteína Cry1F expressa em milho Bt. Para determinar o tempo de busca foi utilizado um cronômetro que foi disparado até a captura da primeira presa; a capacidade de predação foi avaliada através da contagem das presas remanescentes 24 h após infestação. Também foram avaliadas as injúrias de S. frugiperda em milho transgênico e milho convencional na presença ou ausência dos predadores. Os predadores não foram capazes de distinguir entre presas (ovos ou lagartas) resistentes e suscetíveis, considerando os comportamentos predatórios avaliados. Não houve diferença no tempo de busca e capacidade predatória sobre ovos e lagartas de S. frugiperda resistente ou suscetível entre os predadores. Na presença dos predadores, as notas de injúria de S. frugiperda resistente nas plantas de milho Bt foram menores. Conclui-se que O. insidiosus e D. luteipes não percebem a presença da proteína Cry1F na presa S. frugiperda, o que pode contribuir para o uso integrado de milho GM e controle biológico em programas de manejo integrado e manejo de resistência de pragas.

Abstract Understanding the ecological and toxicological relationship between genetically modified cultivars (GM) and biological control agents is of great importance for discussions related to the compatability of GM cultivars and integrated management strategies for pest resistance. The present study evaluated the search behavior and predatory capacity of Orius insidiosus (Say) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) and Doru luteipes (Scudder) (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) on eggs and caterpillars of Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) resistant or not to the protein Cry1F expressed in Bt corn. To determine the search time, a stopwatch was run until the capture of the first prey, predation capacity was evaluated by counting the prey remaining after 24 hours of infestation. The injuries of S. frugiperda in genetically modified and conventional corn in the presence and absence of predators was also evaluated. The predators were not able to distinguish between resistant and susceptible prey (eggs or caterpillars), given the predatory behaviour observed. There was no difference in searching time or predatory capacity between the predators for eggs and caterpillars of either resistant or susceptible S. frugiperda. In the presence of predators, the injury scores for resistant S. frugiperda on the Bt corn plants were lower. It was concluded that O. insidiosus and D. luteipes did not notice the presence of the protein Cry1F in the prey S. frugiperda, which may facilitate the combined use of GM corn and biological control in integrated management programs and for management of pest resistance.

RESUMO: O glifosato é um herbicida de amplo espectro capaz de controlar uma grande diversidade de ervas daninhas e seu uso pode acarretar na ocorrência de resíduos, seja em culturas convencionais ou geneticamente modificadas. Sendo assim, amostragens de grãos de soja e milho e de sementes de algodão foram realizadas em áreas comerciais nas safras de 2012/2013 a 2017/2018 em diferentes regiões agrícolas brasileiras com o objetivo de monitorar os níveis de resíduos de glifosato e seu metabólito (ácido aminometilfosfônico - AMPA) após diferentes manejos. Os níveis de resíduos de glifosato em milho geneticamente modificados (GM) tolerante ao glifosato variaram desde não detectados (ND) a até 0,15 mg kg-1, em soja GM tolerante ao glifosato os valores variaram de ND a 2,81 mg kg-1 e em algodão GM tolerante ao glifosato os resultados se estabeleceram entre ND a 1,78 mg kg-1. Os valores de resíduos de AMPA indicaram correlação com os resíduos de glifosato. Os níveis de resíduos de glifosato em grãos de soja e milho e sementes de algodão ficaram dentro dos Limites Máximos de Resíduos (LMRs) preconizados pela ANVISA e Codex Alimentarius.

ABSTRACT: Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum herbicide capable of controlling a wide range of weed. It uses could cause the occurrence of residues in conventional or genetically modified crops. For this purpose, grains (soybean and corn) and cotton seeds were sampled from commercial areas in 2012/2013 to 2017/2018 seasons in different Brazilian agricultural regions to monitor glyphosate residues levels and its metabolite (aminomethylphosphonic acid - AMPA) after different managements. The glyphosate residues levels in genetically modified corn (GM) ranged from no detected (ND) to 0.15 mg kg-1, in GM soybean values ranged from ND to 2.81 mg kg-1 and in GM cotton ranged from ND to 1.78 mg kg-1. AMPA residues levels indicated a correlation with the glyphosate residues. Glyphosate residues levels in soybean and corn grains and cotton seeds were within the Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) established by ANVISA and Codex Alimentarius.

RESUMO Introdução: No Brasil, há um número considerável de pessoas com surdez, usuárias de língua de sinais, as quais deveriam ter acesso à igualdade de oportunidades. Apesar disso, a língua de sinais ainda é desconhecida por parte da população brasileira, especialmente os que trabalham em órgãos públicos, negando seus direitos de igualdade. Assim, em geral, vários profissionais, entre esses os guardas municipais, não estão preparados para a diversidade. Objetivo: Investigar o conhecimento dos membros da guarda municipal (GM) de Curitiba a respeito dos surdos, da Língua Brasileira de Sinais (Libras) e das práticas de atendimento diante da necessidade de interagir com cidadãos surdos. Método: Trata-se de um estudo transversal de natureza mista, cuja coleta de dados se deu por meio da aplicação de um questionário semiestruturado, respondido por 50 policiais da GM, com perguntas a respeito do conhecimento deles sobre os surdos e a língua de sinais e das práticas de atendimento realizadas por membros da corporação com pessoas surdas. Os dados foram tabulados e analisados em percentuais quantitativos e eixos de análise qualitativa, sob a Análise do Conteúdo de Bardin. Resultados: Os resultados demonstram que os participantes possuem conhecimento limitado da surdez e da Libras. Conclusão: A maioria dos integrantes da GM da cidade possui uma visão de surdos e da Língua Brasileira de Sinais baseada em uma perspectiva orgânica da surdez. Além disso, foi possível observar que, durante as práticas de atendimento desses servidores públicos com um cidadão surdo, muitos não conseguiram interagir nem se comunicar.

ABSTRACT Introduction: In Brazil, there is a considerable number of deaf people, sign language users, who should have access to equal opportunities. However, sign language is unknown by the most Brazilian population, especially those who work in public institutions, and deny the deaf their rights to equality. Therefore, several professionals, among them, the municipal guards, are not prepared for the diversity. Purpose: to investigate the knowledge of the Municipal Guards (MG) from Curitiba about the deaf, Brazilian Sign Language (Libras),and their service practices when they need to interact with deaf citizens. Method: It´s a mixed crosscut study; data were collected by the application of a semi-structured questionnaire answered by 50 municipal guards, with questions on their knowledge about the deaf, the sign language and the service practices conducted by their corporation towards deaf people. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively by means of Bardin’s Content Analysis. Results: The results demonstrate that participants have a limited knowledge of deafness and Libras. Conclusion: Most members of the Municipal Guard have a view of deaf people and the Brazilian Sign Language based on an organic perspective of deafness, and it was also observed that during their service practices towards deaf people, many of them could not either interact or communicate with them.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of cell wall of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CWSc) and piperine in broiler rations and their effects on performance, carcass traits, blood parameters, ileal microbiota and nutrient digestibility. A randomized block design with five treatments and six replicates of 10 birds was used, totaling 300 chickens. The treatments consisted of: control ration (CR); CR + avilamycin (10 mg / kg); CR + CWSc (2.0 g / kg); CR + piperine (60 mg / kg); and CR + CWSc (2.0 g / kg) + piperine (60 mg / kg). The use of isolated piperine resulted in greater weight gain from 9 to 40 days of age (2505g). The additives CWSc and piperine conjugates influenced the lower coliform count in the ceca (4.45 CFU / g) and caused significant alterations in the biochemical serum and hepatic renal profile. The treatments had no effect on the nutrient metabolizable coefficients or on the carcass traits. There was no positive synergistic effect of the combined use of CWSc and piperine on broiler performance. The cell wall of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and piperine are effective at guaranteeing productivity, intestinal microbiota dynamics and hematological parameters; and as zootechnical additives, especially in broiler feeds free of antimicrobial performance enhancers.

Resumo Introdução: A Síndrome da Dor Femoropatelar (SDFP) está relacionada à dor anterior do joelho, alteração de funcionalidade, déficits de equilíbrio e força muscular. Objetivo: Quantificar a dor, funcionalidade, força muscular do quadríceps (Q), glúteo médio (GM), rotadores externos de quadril (RE) e o equilíbrio em mulheres com SDFP. Métodos: Avaliou-se 20 voluntárias, sedentárias, entre 18 e 25 anos; divididas em grupo SDFP (N=10) e controle (N=10). Todas responderam a Escala Visual Analógica de Dor, Lysholm Knee Score Scale, Anterior Knee Pain Scale e Lower Extremity Functional Scale, realizaram a contração isométrica voluntária máxima dos músculos Q, GM e RE por meio de dinamometria e análise do equilíbrio postural pelo Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) e plataforma de força. Para análise estatística utilizou-se os testes Shapiro Wilk, Mann Whitney e Correlação de Spearmann, pelo SPSS® 20. Resultados: O grupo SDFP apresentou maior dor, incapacidade e velocidade média de oscilação do centro de pressão, entretanto não foram observadas diferenças para a força muscular de Q, GM e RE e equilíbrio analisado pelo SEBT. Estabeleceu-se correlação moderada entre SEBT e Centro de Oscilação de Pressão (COP) unipodal. Conclusão: Mulheres com SDFP apresentam maior dor, pior funcionalidade e alterações no equilíbrio corporal. A correlação moderada entre SEBT e o COP-unipodal aponta a possibilidade de uso deste teste funcional quando a plataforma de força não é acessível, o que facilita e destaca a importância do diagnóstico clínico do equilíbrio postural.

Abstract Introduction: Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) is associated with anterior knee pain, changes in functional capacity, balance and muscle strength disorders. Objective: To quantify pain, functional capacity, strength in quadriceps (Q), gluteus medium (GM), hip external rotator (ER) muscles and balance in sedentary women with PFPS. Methods: Twenty sedentary women, aged 18 to 25 years, were divided into two groups: PFPS (N=10) and control group (N=10). All the volunteers answered the items of the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Lysholm Knee Score Scale, the Anterior Knee Pain Scale (AKPS), and the Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS). The participants performed the following tests: maximal voluntary isometric contraction measured by dynamometry; postural balance using the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) and a force platform. Statistical analyses were performed using the Shapiro Wilk test, the Mann Whitney U test and Spearman’s correlation coefficient. Data were submitted to SPSS 20 software. Results: The PFPS group presented greater pain, balance impairment and higher average velocity of oscillation; however, no differences were observed in Q, GM and RE muscle strength and in balance analyzed by SEBT. Conclusion: Women with PFPS exhibited greater pain, worse functional capacity and body balance. Moderate correlation between both balance tests suggests the use of SEBT when the force platform is not available, which could facilitate and highlight the importance of clinical diagnosis with regard to postural balance.

RESUMO: O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar as alterações sistêmicas e neurotóxicas promovidas pelo meloxicam, administrado por via epidural, em coelhos. Foram utilizados 12 coelhos adultos, quatro machos e oito fêmeas, pensando em média 1,9 ± 0,1kg. Os animais foram divididos equitativa e aleatoriamente em dois grupos, os quais receberam dose única de solução de NaCl 0,9% no volume de 0,3mL kg-1, por via epidural (grupo controle - GC) ou meloxicam (0,2mg kg-1) associado à solução de NaCl 0,9%, compondo um volume total de 0,3mL kg-1 (grupo meloxicam - GM). Avaliaram-se frequências cardíaca e respiratória, temperatura corporal e alterações neurológicas, antes da administração da anestesia (H0), uma, duas, três, seis, 12 e 24 horas após a punção epidural (H1, H2, H3, H6, H12 e H24, respectivamente) e a cada 24 horas após o H24, até o 10º dia após a punção epidural (D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, D8, D9 e D10). Mensurou-se ainda a temperatura superficial da região lombossacra em H0, H1, H6, H12, H24, D5 e D10. Realizou-se eutanásia em três animais de cada grupo no 15o e no 30o dia após o início do experimento, para avaliação das possíveis lesões medulares. As variâncias observadas nos parâmetros fisiológicos não foram sugestivas de efeito adverso do meloxicam, pois estiveram dentro do padrão de referência e não houve alterações físicas ou comportamentais. O exame neurológico se mostrou semelhante entre os grupos, havendo diferença apenas entre a avaliação inicial e uma hora após a epidural em ambos os grupos. Na histopatologia não houve alterações no GM e apenas um animal do GC apresentou discreto infiltrado linfoplasmocitário. A administração epidural lombossacra de meloxicam, na dose de 0,2mg kg-1, não causa efeitos sistêmicos e neurotóxicos significativos, em coelhos.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to assess systemic and neurotoxic changes following an epidural administration of meloxicamin to rabbits. Twelve adult rabbits four males and eight females; average mass, 1.9 ± 0.1kg were randomly divided into two groups: a control group (GC), which received a single dose of 0.9% NaCl epidurally in a volume of 0.3mL kg-1and a meloxicam group (GM), which received 0.2mg kg-1 meloxicam epidurally along with 0.9% NaCl in a total volume of 0.3mL kg-1. Heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, and neurological abnormalities were assessed prior to administration of anesthesia (H0), 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, and 24h following epidural puncture (H1, H2, H3, H6, H12, and H24, respectively), and every 24h afterward for 10 days after epidural puncture (D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, D8, D9, and D10). The surface temperature of lumbosacral region was also measured at H0, H1, H6, H12, H24, D5 and D10. Three animals from each group were euthanized on days 15 and 30 after epidural puncture to assess possible spinal injuries. Variances observed in physiological parameters were not suggestive of adverse effects of meloxicam, as all were within the reference standards, and there were no physical or behavioral changes observed. Neurological function was similar between groups, with only difference between baseline values and values 1h after epidural administration in both groups. There were no histopathological changes in the GM group, and only one animal showed discrete lymphocytic infiltrate. Epidural lumbosacral administration of meloxicam at a dose of 0.2mg kg-1 caused no significant systemic or neurotoxic effects in rabbits.

ABSTRACT The taxonomic identification of micromammals might be complicated when the study material is fragmented, as it is the case with pellets and fossil material. On the other hand, tooth morphology generally provides accurate information for species identification. Teeth preserve notably well, retaining their original morphology, unlike skulls and mandibles, which can get crushed or have missing parts. Here, we explored a geometric morphometrics approach (GM) to identify fragmented specimens of two sympatric Calomys Waterhouse, 1837 species - Calomys tener (Winge, 1888) and Calomys expulsus (Lund, 1841) - using the morphology of intact molars as the basis for identification. Furthermore, we included some specimens of uncertain taxonomic identification to test their affinities and the utility of the shape of the molar to identify incomplete specimens. We evaluated the variations in the shape of the first upper molar (M1) among 46 owl pellets specimens of Calomys, including C. expulsus (n = 15), C. tener (n = 15), and unidentified specimens treated as Calomys sp. (n = 16) through GM analysis using 17 landmarks. The data was explored using PCA, PERMANOVA, and Discriminant analyses over the Procrustes residuals matrix were applied to evaluate inter- and intraspecific shape differences. Also, we evaluated whether allometric shape differences could impact the data, but found no evidence of a correlation between size and shape. Our results support that shape differences in the M1 are effective for discriminating between C. tener and C. expulsus. Moreover, the unidentified specimens do not represent a third shape but could be identified with confidence either as C. tener or C. expulsus. Our results show that even with fragmentary materials, GM is a feasible and useful tool for exploring inter-specific shape differences and assisting in taxonomic identification as a complement to traditional qualitative description of diagnostic features in poorly preserved specimens.

A liberação comercial agrícola de plantas geneticamente modificadas (PGMs) é uma questão que suscita discussões e controvérsias entre os diferentes setores da sociedade civil e especialistas da área ambiental em relação ao seu plantio em escala comercial, dados os potenciais impactos socioambientais e econômicos que podem suscitar ao longo do tempo. O presente trabalho analisa a questão por meio de questionários aplicados junto aos diversos atores sociais envolvidos de forma direta ou indireta com o assunto, visando detectar as visões existentes sobre a liberação comercial de PGMs no Brasil. Os resultados apontam a diversidade de opiniões entre os agentes entrevistados, mas que convergem para uma necessidade comum de revisão do modelo regulatório de PGMs brasileiro no que se refere aos aspectos institucionais e os instrumentos ambientais utilizados para sua avaliação prévia antes da liberação comercial.

The commercial release of genetically modified crops (GM crops) is an issue of discussion and controversy among different sectors of civil society and experts in the environmental area in relation to its cultivation on a commercial scale, given the potential social, environmental and economic impacts that may ensue over time. This paper examines the issue through questionnaires together with the various actors involved directly or indirectly to the subject, to detect the existing views on the commercial release of GM crops in Brazil. The results show the diversity of opinion among the agents interviewed, but converge to a common need for revision of the Brazilian regulatory model of GM crops with regard to its institutional aspects and the environmental tools used for evaluation prior the commercial release.

Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho, glicerol sérico e umidade da cama de pintos de corte recebendo rações com diferentes níveis e fontes de glicerina. Foram utilizados 1300 pintos de corte machos Cobb 500, num arranjo fatorial 4x3+1, com delineamento inteiramente casualizados, sendo quatro níveis de inclusão (17,5; 35,0; 52,5 e 70,0g/kg) de três glicerinas (bruta de soja (GS), bruta mista (GM) e semipurificada (GPUR) nas dietas isonutritivas e um tratamento sem glicerina, sendo que para as fontes e níveis de glicerina foram teste de Student-Newman-Keuls e análise de regressão, respectivamente; e para o tratamento, teste de Dunnett. Utilizou-se quatro repetições e 25 aves por parcela. O consumo de ração foi influenciado (P<0,05) pelas fontes de glicerina, sendo a GM a fonte que promoveu menor consumo nas aves, porém, não houve diferença dos tratamentos em relação ao controle. Não houve diferença significativa para o ganho de peso. Houve interação dos níveis e fontes de glicerina para a conversão alimentar. Para a GS, a melhor conversão alimentar com a inclusão de 50,35g; para a GM, houve uma piora linear com o aumento da inclusão de glicerina. Houve interação para a concentração de glicerol sérico nas aves, obtendo aumento linear nas aves que ingeriram a GS e GPUR, e redução linear para a GM. O ganho de umidade da cama foi influenciado pelas fontes de glicerina, sendo que a mista apresentou menor umidade. As glicerinas estudadas podem ser incluídas nas rações para pintos de corte até 70,0g/kg, sem prejudicar o desempenho dos animais.

This work aimed to evaluate the performance, serum glycerol and litter moisture of 1300 male Cobb 500 chicks fed diets containing different levels and sources of glycerin. A 4x3+1 factorial arrangement of treatments in a completely randomized design was used, with four inclusion levels of three glycerine (crude soybean (GS), gross mixed (GM) and semipurified (GPUR)) on isonutrient diets and one control treatment without glycerin. The methods of Student-Newman-Keuls test and regression analysis were applied for sources and levels of glycerin, respectively; and Dunnett test for treatment. It was used four replicates and 25 chickens per pen. Feed intake was affected (P <0.05) by the sources of glycerin, and GM was the source that promoted lower consumption in birds, however, there was no difference in the treatments when compared to control. Also there was no significant difference in weight gain. An interaction of levels and sources of glycerine to the feed conversion was seen.GS had the best feed conversion with the inclusion of 50,35g; GM had a linear worsening with increasing addition of glycerin. There was an interaction for the concentration of serum glycerol in birds, obtaining linear increase in birds consuming the GS and GPUR, and linear decrease for GM. The gain of litter moisture was influenced by the sources of glycerin, with a lower humidity for GM. The glycerine studied may be included in diets for broiler chicks until 70,0g/kg, without harming animal performance.

A evolução tecnológica tem possibilitado o desenvolvimento e o aperfeiçoamento de novos materiais para implantes. Apesar dos fundamentais benefícios providos pelos dispositivos ortopédicos, complicações decorrentes de corrosão, degradação, infecção, além de outras podem ocorrer. O entendimento das características dos biomateriais é fundamental para a previsibilidade do seu comportamento in vivo, fornecendo subsídios para que o composto mais adequado seja escolhido na reconstrução do defeito ósseo. As placas de origem metálica são as mais utilizadas para o reparo de fraturas de ossos longos, sendo mecanicamente resistentes e biocompatíveis. No entanto, a necessidade de remoção e o enfraquecimento do osso são suas principais desvantagens. Neste trabalho, placas produzidas a partir de osso cortical equino foram empregadas experimentalmente em fêmur osteotomizado de coelhos (Grupo osso-GO), num estudo comparativo com placas de metal (Grupo metal-GM). A avaliação radiográfica foi realizada a cada 30 dias, durante 120 dias, momento em que foi então realizada análise histológica do material em estudo. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os dois grupos com relação à morfometria do calo ósseo e consolidação óssea em todos os momentos avaliados, sendo que ambas as placas permitiram a consolidação em todos os animais. Entretanto, observou-se que o calo ósseo foi menor no GO, em relação ao GM, em todos os momentos do estudo. Por outro lado, a maior parte dos animais do GO apresentou consolidação completa da fratura aos 90 dias, enquanto que no GM isto ocorreu aos 60 dias. Não foram evidenciadas células do tipo corpo estranho na histopatologia dos animais do GO, mas maior quantidade de tecido fibroso foi identificada, envolvendo este biomaterial. A placa confeccionada com osso equino representa uma alternativa de baixo custo e muito viável, uma vez que permitiu estabilização adequada para consolidação óssea de fratura de fêmur em coelhos. Neste estudo, a menor formação de calo periosteal, associada a um tempo superior para consolidação em GO sugerem maior estabilidade da fratura onde a placa de osso foi utilizada.

Actually, technological advances have contributed to the development and improvement of new materials for implants. Despite the fundamental benefits provided by orthopedic materials, complications resulting from corrosion, degradation, infection, and others may occur. The knowledge of characteristics of the biomaterials is important to predict their behavior in vivo, supporting that the most suitable compound is chosen to reconstruct the bone defect. Metallic plates are the most common material used for repair of long bone fractures, and they are mechanically stable and biocompatible. However, the need of removal and bone weakening are their disadvantages. In this paper, plates made from equine cortical bone were used experimentally in osteotomized rabbit femur (bone-GO Group), in a comparative study with metal plates (metal GM Group). Radiographic evaluation was performed every 30 days during 120 days, at which time was then performed femur histological analysis. During all evaluated moments of the study, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in callus morphometry, and complete consolidation was observed in all animals. However, it was observed that the callus was lower in GO compared to GM, all times during the study. Moreover, most of the GO animals showed complete consolidation fracture at 90 days only, whereas this occurred in GM at 60 days. There were no foreign-body cells in the histopathology exam of the GO animals, but larger amount of fibrous tissue was identified, involving this biomaterial. The plate made from horse bone represents a low cost alternative and it is very feasible, it allowed adequate stabilization of femur fracture in rabbits. In this study, the lower periosteal callus associated with a longer time for consolidation in GO suggest greater fracture stability when the bone plate was used.

Infrared thermographic images were used to evaluate the effect of the exposure of layers to cold. In this trial, 540 Isa Brown® layers with an average age of 69 weeks were housed in a conventional layer house typically used in Brazil during a period of cold environmental temperatures. Environmental and heat-transference data were recorded between July 13-16, 2010. It was verified that layers under cold stress conditions lost four times more energy that the recommendations trying to maintain their body temperature. Due to their reduced feed intake capacity, hens are not capable of increasing the availability of the metabolic energy required to maintain their body temperature and egg production, consequently resulting in economic losses.

Avaliaram-se os efeitos anestésicos promovidos pela associação medetomidina e lidocaína por via epidural, em gatos pré-tratados com acepromazina e midazolam. Foram utilizados 10 gatos adultos, machos e fêmeas, hígidos e com média de peso de 2,5±0,6kg, distribuídos em dois grupos (GM e GL) de igual número (n=5). Administraram-se, como medicação pré-anestésica, acepromazina, 0,2mg/kg, e midazolam, 0,5mg/kg, via intramuscular, e 20 minutos depois, nos animais do GM, por via epidural, lidocaína, 4,4mg/kg, associada à medetomidina, 0,02mg/kg. Os gatos do GL receberam lidocaína, 4,4mg/kg, associada à solução de NaCl a 0,9%. As avaliações ocorreram antes da pré-anestesia (MPA), 20 minutos após a MPA e antes da anestesia epidural, e aos 10, 20, 30 e 40 minutos após a anestesia epidural, respectivamente, T-20, T0, T10, T20, T30 e T40. Foram avaliados: frequência cardíaca (FC) e respiratória (FR), temperatura do corpo, saturação de oxiemoglobina, analgesia, miorrelaxamento e período de recuperação. No GM, a FC diminuiu em T20, T30 e T40 em relação ao T-20 e T10 e foi mais baixa que a FC do GL em T20, T30 e T40, respectivamente, 86, 91 e 88 bat/min e 194, 205 e 177 bat/min. A FR variou entre o T-20 e os outros momentos de avaliação nos animais do GL. Nas variáveis eletrocardiográficas, houve diferenças entre T20, T30 e T40 e T-20 e T0, valores de 235, 238 e 240ms e 156 e 161ms, respectivamente, somente no GM. Este grupo diferiu do GL nas avaliações em T20, T30 e T40, valores de 147, 132 e 150ms para os gatos do GL. Oitenta por cento dos gatos tiveram analgesia intensa, e em todos os animais ocorreu relaxamento da mandíbula e da língua. O tempo de recuperação foi de 40 e 15min no GM e no GL, respectivamente. Concluiu-se que a associação lidocaína com medetomidina promoveu plano anestésico estável com grau de anestesia e recuperação anestésica de boa qualidade.

The anesthetic effects due to the association of medetomidine and epidural lidocaine in cats pretreated with acepromazine and midazolam were evaluated. Ten adult cats were used, male and female, healthy and weighing 2.5±0.6kg. They were divided into two groups (GM and GL) of equal numbers (n=5). Premedication with acepromazine, 0.2mg/kg, and midazolam, 0.5mg/kg, intramuscular was administered. Twenty minutes later, GM animals were given epidural lidocaine, 4.4mg/kg, associated with medetomidine, 0.02mg/kg. GL cats received lidocaine, 4.4mg/kg, associated with NaCl 0.9%. Assessments occurred before the pre-anesthesia (MPA), 20 minutes after premedication and before the epidural block, and 10, 20, 30 and 40 minutes after epidural anesthesia, respectively, T-20, T0, T10, T20, T30 and T40. Heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, oxyhemoglobin saturation, analgesia, muscle relaxation and recovery period were evaluated. In GM cats the heart rate decreased at T20, T30 and T40 as compared to T-20 and T10 and was lower than the heart rate in the GL cats at T20, T30 and T40, values being, respectively, 86, 91 and 88 beats/min and 194, 205 and 177 beats/min. The respiratory rate ranged from T-20 and the other time points in GL animals. Concerning electrocardiographic variables, in GM cats significant differences between T20, T30 and T40 and T0 and T-20, were observed, values being 235, 238 and 156 and 161ms and 240ms, respectively. GM animals differed from GL in T20, T30 and T40, values being 147, 132 and 150ms for GL cats. Eighty percent of the cats had severe pain and in all animals there was a relaxation of the jaw and tongue. The recovery time was 40 and 15 min at GM and GL, respectively. It was concluded that the association promoted lidocaine with medetomidine anesthesia with a stable level of anesthesia and anesthetic recovery of good quality.
