ABSTRACT Developing countries face great challenges to couple agricultural intensification and sustainable supply chain development. This paper explores the opportunities for innovation in the conservation of the locally adapted Curraleiro Pé-Duro (CPD) cattle. The CPD is a historical Brazilian breed, related to regional culture, which exhibits remarkable adaptability in tropical biomes. The research method consisted of interviewing and analyzing the discourse of CPD breeders in Tocantins, Brazil. The systematization of the data resulted in four categories and eleven subcategories, which were defined a posteriori. Our findings reveal motivational aspects, potentialities, and prospects for valuation, besides the needs and perceived challenges faced by CPD farmers. A better understanding of the current situation may guide public policies, encourage stakeholders, benefit farmers, and lead to sustainable agri-food initiatives. The empirical contributions of our diagnosis are discussed, and we show how they bring forward and provide valuable lessons to prospect innovations in the conservation of CPD cattle. These findings may support scholars and people who are also interested in accessing and supporting the conservation of indigenous livestock. In general, the study supports the definition of strategies, planning, and investments for the value chain, including the participation of upstream and downstream segments of the farms.

RESUMO Os países em desenvolvimento enfrentam grandes desafios para combinar a intensificação da agricultura com o desenvolvimento sustentável das cadeias de abastecimento. Este documento explora as oportunidades de inovação na conservação do gado Curraleiro Pé-Duro (CPD). O CPD é uma raça brasileira histórica, relacionada à cultura regional, que apresenta notável adaptabilidade em biomas tropicais. O método de pesquisa consistiu em entrevistar e analisar o discurso dos criadores de CPD no Tocantins, Brasil. A sistematização dos dados resultou em quatro categorias e onze subcategorias, que foram definidas a posteriori. Nossas descobertas revelam aspectos motivacionais, potencialidades e perspectivas de valorização, além das necessidades e desafios percebidos pelos produtores de CPD. Uma melhor compreensão da situação atual pode orientar as políticas públicas, incentivar os interessados, beneficiar os agricultores e levar a iniciativas agroalimentares sustentáveis. As contribuições empíricas de nosso diagnóstico são discutidas e mostramos como elas trazem e fornecem lições valiosas para prospectar inovações na conservação do gado de CPD. Estas descobertas podem apoiar acadêmicos e pessoas que também estão interessadas em acessar e apoiar a conservação e produção animal com uso de raças crioulas. Em geral, o estudo apoia a definição de estratégias, planejamento e investimentos relacionados com cadeia de valor, incluindo a participação de segmentos a montante e a jusante das fazendas.

RESUMO Copaifera sabulicola é uma espécie endêmica da região centro-oeste da Bahia e extremo norte de Minas Gerais e ainda possui lacunas nas informações botânicas. O presente trabalho caracterizou anatomicamente o folíolo e peciólulo de C. sabulicola, com ênfase nas estruturas secretoras e histolocalizar as substâncias biologicamente ativas. Amostras de folhas foram fixadas em FNT, desidratadas em série etílica e incluídas em metacrilato. Os cortes histológicos foram corados com azul de toluidina e montados em lâmina permanente. Foram realizados testes histoquímicos e fitoquímicos, dissociação e diafanização da lâmina foliolar. Cavidades secretoras foram encontradas ao longo do mesofilo, nervura central e peciólulo. Foram observados feixes vasculares circundados por bainha fibrosa e cutícula ornamentada na nervura central e no bordo foliolar. Nos testes histoquímicos foram detectados compostos fenólicos, alcaloides, proteínas e lipídios estruturais, e na análise fitoquímica, taninos catéquicos, flavonas, flavonois, xantonas, esteroides e terpenois. Tais caracteres auxiliam na correta identificação da espécie.

ABSTRACT Copaifera sabulicola is an endemic species of the central-western region of Bahia and extreme north of Minas Gerais and still has gaps in botanical information. The present work anatomically characterized the leaflet and petiolule of C. sabulicola, with emphasis on the secretory structures and histolocalized the biologically active substances. Leaf samples were fixed in FNT, dehydrated in ethyl series and included in methacrylate. The histological sections were stained with toluidine blue and mounted on a permanent slide. Histochemical and phytochemical tests, dissociation and diaphanization of foliolar lamina were performed. Secretory cavities were found along the mesophyll, the central vein and the petiole. Vascular bundles surrounded by fibrous sheath and ornate cuticle were observed in the central vein and foliolar border. Phenolic compounds, alkaloids, proteins and structural lipids were detected in the histochemical tests, and in the phytochemical analysis, cathectic tannins, flavones, flavonoids, xanthones, steroids and terpenoids were detected. These characters help in the correct identification of the species.

Os efeitos eletrocardiográficos produzidos pelo extrato de Ginkgo biloba (EGb) e gingkolídeos A (GA) e B (GB), e bilobalide (BB) foram investigados em coração de cobaia montado sistema de Langendorff (Tyrode, 34 ± 0.1 ºC, 95% O2, 5% CO2). Os parâmetros do ECG foram avaliados nas condições: 1) Tyrode e DMSO, 2) EGb (n=4), GA (n=5), GB (n=5) ou BB (n=6) diluídos em DMSO e 3) washout. Os resultados demonstram que 0,1 e 1,0 mg/mL de EGb não alteraram os parâmetros eletrocardiográficos. Entretanto, 10 mg/ml de EGb aumentaram o intervalo PR (PRi) em 21% (p<0.001). Esse aumento também foi observado com GA a 50µM (20%, p<0,001) e BB a 70 mM (13%, p<0,001) indicando bloqueio de canais de cálcio. Por outro lado, GB reduziu o PRi (11%, p<0,001). O intervalo QT (QTi) foi reduzido por GA (23%, p<0,001), GB (16%, p<0,001) e BB (40%, p < 0.001) sugerindo uma ativação de canais de potássio. Entretanto, EGb aumentou o QTi (6%, p<0.001). A frequência cardíaca foi reduzida por EGb (28%, p<0.05) e GB (13%, p<0.05). Bloqueios átrio-ventriculares (BAV) foram observados com EGb, GA e BB. Podemos concluir que EGb e os terpenos alteram parâmetros eletrocardiográficos induzindo BAV e demonstrando possível potencial arritmogênico.

Electrocardiographic effects produced by Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb) and by ginkgolides A (GA) and B (GB), and bilobalide (BB) were investigated in guinea pig heart mounted in Langendorff apparatus (Tyrode, 34 ± 0.1 ºC, 95% O2, 5% CO2). Electrocardiographic parameters were evaluated in the conditions: 1) control with Tyrode and DMSO, 2) EGb (n=4), GA (n=5), GB (n=5) or BB (n=6), and 3) washout. The results showed that 0.1 and 1.0 mg/ml of EGb do not change the electrocardiographic parameters. However, 10 mg/ml of EGb increased the PR interval (PRi) at 21% (p<0.001). This increase was also observed for 50 mM GA (20%, p<0.001) and 70 mM BB (13%, p<0.001), which indicates Ca2+ channel block. However, the 50 mM GB reduced the PRi at 11 % (p<0.001). The GA (23%, p<0.001), GB (16%, p<0.001), and BB (40%, p<0.001) reduced the QT interval (QTi), which suggests the activation of the potassium channel. However, EGb increased QTi (6%, p<0.001). The EGb (28%, p<0.05) and GB (13%, p<0.05) reduced the heart rate. Atrioventricular (AV) block was observed with EGb, GA, and BB. We can conclude that EGb and its terpenoids alter the ECG parameters inducing AV block, which indicates possible arrhythmogenic potential.

Avaliou-se a influência da suplementação de lipídeos na dieta, com diferentes composições de ácidos graxos, sobre o desempenho produtivo e tolerância ao frio e ao calor de juvenis de acará-bandeira (Pterophyllum scalare). O experimento foi realizado em três fases. Na fase um avaliou-se o desempenho produtivo dos peixes em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso com quatro tratamentos - óleos de canola, linhaça, oliva e soja - e quatro repetições, durante 50 dias usando 192 peixes distribuídos em 16 aquários. Na segunda fase, avaliou-se a tolerância ao frio, usando 72 peixes, procedentes da fase um, distribuídos em 12 aquários e mantidos em câmara climatizada. A temperatura foi reduzida de 1ºC por dia até a observação de 100% de mortalidade dos peixes. Na fase três, avaliou-se a tolerância ao calor com procedimentos semelhantes aos da fase dois, porém a temperatura foi elevada 1ºC por dia. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas (P>0,05) para os parâmetros avaliados. Conclui-se que a suplementação de óleos vegetais nas dietas não inferiu no desempenho produtivo e na tolerância ao frio e ao calor de juvenis de acará-bandeira.

The influence of fatty acid composition of the diets on the productive performance and on cold and heat tolerance of juvenile freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), in three different phases, was studied. Phase I studied the productive performance of freshwater angelfish in a completely randomized experimental design with four treatments, canola, linseed, olive and soybean oils and four replicates during 50 days using 192 fish in 16 aquaria. Phase II studied the cold tolerance of juvenile freshwater angelfish using 72 juvenile freshwater angelfish, coming from phase I and maintained in 12 aquaria climatized chamber. The temperature was reduced 1ºC per day, until the observation of 100% fish mortality. Phase III, it was studied the heat tolerance of juvenile freshwater angelfish employing an identical procedure to phase II, but with a daily increase of 1ºC. Significant differences (P>0.05) were not observed for any parameters evaluated. Thus, it was concluded that the type of vegetable oil (canola, linseed, olive and soybean) used as a diet supplement did not affect the productive performance, nor the tolerance to cold and heat, of juvenile freshwater angelfish.

Avaliou-se a qualidade da silagem do sorgo BRS-610 produzida em sete estádios de maturação dos grãos, pela técnica in vitro semiautomática de produção de gases. O delineamento foi inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro repetições por tratamento, e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste Scott-knott. Os parâmetros potencial máximo de produção de gases, tempo de colonização, taxa de produção de gases e degradabilidade efetiva da matéria seca para as taxas de passagem de 2, 5 e 8%/h foram obtidos pelo modelo de France et al. O potencial máximo de produção de gases não diferiu entre as silagens e indicou média de 170,5mL/g de matéria seca. Entre leitoso/pastoso e pastoso houve menor tempo de colonização. As maiores taxas de fermentação foram observadas nas silagens produzida entre os estádios pastoso/farináceo a seco. As degradabilidades efetivas foram semelhantes entres as silagens, com média de 46,2%. O sorgo BRS-610 produziu silagem de qualidade satisfatória, com destaque para a silagem produzida com a planta no estádio pastoso/farináceo, por associar melhor taxa de fermentação e menor tempo de colonização.

The quality of the silages of sorghum BRS-610 produced at seven stages of grain maturation was evaluated by the semi-automatic gas production technique. It was used a complete randomized design, with four repetitions per treatment, and the means were compared by the Scott-knott test (P<0.05). The potential of production of gases, lag phase, rates of gas production, and effective dry matter degradability for 2, 5, and 8%/h rates of passage were obtained by the model of France et al. The potential of gas production did not differ among the silages, showing mean of 170.5mL/dry matter. The stages between milky/soft dough to soft dough showed shorter lag phase. The highest rate of gas production was observed in the silages produced between soft dough/floury to dry stages. The effective degradabilities were similar among the silages, averaging 46.2%. The sorghum BRS-610 produced satisfactory quality silage, mainly for the silage produced with the plant at soft dough/floury stage, for associating better rate of gas production and shorter lag phase.

De modo geral, o acamamento tem sido controlado mediante restrição da aplicação de fertilizantes nitrogenados e/ou o uso de cultivares de porte baixo. No entanto, esse problema também pode ser solucionado pela utilização de redutores de crescimento. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de doses e épocas de aplicação de três redutores de crescimento sobre plantas de trigo do cultivar Pioneiro. O experimento, conduzido em Viçosa-MG de maio a setembro de 2005, foi instalado com os tratamentos dispostos em esquema fatorial e hierárquico com uma testemunha, no delineamento de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram: 500, 1.000 e 1.500 g ha-1 de clormequat; 62,5, 125 e 187,5 g ha-1 de trinexapac-etil; e 40, 80 e 120 g ha-1 de paclobutrazol, aplicados no estádio 6 ou 8 da escala Feeks e Large, mais uma testemunha sem aplicação de redutor. O trinexapac-etil e o clormequat foram mais eficientes em reduzir a estatura das plantas de trigo. A ação do clormequat e do paclobutrazol sobre a altura das plantas foi independente da época de aplicação, porém o trinexapac-etil no estádio 8 promoveu menor altura do que no estádio 6. O aumento das doses dos redutores promoveu menor estatura das plantas; clormequat e paclobutrazol não afetaram a produtividade dos grãos. A maior dose de trinexapac-etil causou redução na produtividade do trigo.

In general, lodging has been controlled by restricting nitrogen fertilizer application and/or using short cultivars. Growth retardants can also be used to solve this problem.The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of rates and application times of three growth retardants on Pioneiro wheat cultivar. The trial was carried out in Viçosa-MG, from May to September 2005, in a factorial and hierarchical scheme, in a randomized block design with four replications and a control treatment. The treatments consisted of 500, 1,000 and 1,500 g ha-1 of chlormequat; 62.5, 125 and 187.5 g ha-1 of trinexapac-ethyl and 40, 80 and 120 g ha-1 of paclobutrazol applied at growth stages 6 or 8, growth stage used on the scale of Feeks and Large, and a control treatment without growth retardant application. Only trinexapac-ethyl and chlormequat were efficient in reducing plant height; the effect of chlormequat and paclobutrazol on plant height was independent of the application time, but the trinexapac-ethyl at growth stage 8 produced shorter plant height than at stage 6. Increasing growth retardant rates produced shorter plant heights; chlormequat and paclobutrazol did not affect grain yield. However, the highest trinexapac-ethyl rates reduced wheat yield.

Determinaram-se a composição bromatológica do material original e das silagens de quatro genótipos de girassol (M742, MG4, PM92007 e VDH483) utilizados para produção de grãos, ensilados em diferentes idades de corte após o plantio e aos 90, 97, 104, 111, e 118 dias, e o melhor momento de colheita desses cultivares para ensilagem. Os teores de matéria seca variaram entre as idades e cultivares, sendo observados valores de 12,7% a 42,2% no material original e 11,1% e 40,2% na silagem. Os valores de proteína bruta variaram de 8,3% a 12,6% no material original e de 9,4% a 12,9% na silagem. Foi observada diminuição (P<0,05) nos teores de carboidratos com a ensilagem. Os teores de extrato etéreo do material original e das silagens variaram de 2,2 a 13,3% no material original e de 3,0 a 17,9% na ensilagem. Houve diminuição dos teores de hemicelulose com a ensilagem, sugerindo que essa fração foi utilizada com substrato adicional para fermentação. Os teores de ácido lático diminuíram com o estágio de maturação da planta. Houve diminuição nos valores de digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca com o avanço do estádio de maturação da planta. O melhor momento de colheita para os genótipos M742, MG4 e VDH483 foi aos 104 dias de idade e para o genótipo PM92007, aos 111dias.

The bromatological composition of four sunflower genotypes (M742, MG4, PM92007 and VDH483) used for producing seed, ensiled at different harvest ages (90, 97, 104, 111 and 118 days) after sowing, was used to determine the best time to ensile. Differences among ages and cultivars were found for dry matter of the genotypes. The crude protein values varied from 8.3 to 12.6% for the original sample and from 9.4 to 12.9% for the silage. A decrease (P<0.05) in the soluble carbohydrate values for the ensiled genotypes was observed. The ether extract values varied from 2.2 to 13.3% for the original sample and from 3.0 to 17.9% for the silage. The values of hemicellulose and lignin decreased with the ensiling process, suggesting the fibrous fractions contributed, as additional substrate source, for fermentation. The lactic acid values decreased with the plant maturity stage. The dry matter in vitro digestibility decreased with the plant maturity. The best time to ensile, based on the quality of the sunflower genotype M742, MG4 and VDH483 silage, was at 104 days of age and for the genotype PM92007 silage was at 111 days of age.
