ABSTRACT Increasing the efficiency of solar dryers with ensuring that the system remains accessible to all users can be achieved with their automation through low-cost and easy-to-use technique sensors. The objective was to develop, implement and evaluate an automatic system for monitoring drying parameters in a hybrid solar-electric dryer (HSED). Initially, an automated data acquisition system for collecting the parameters of sample mass, air temperature, and relative air humidity was developed and installed. The automatic mass data acquisition system was calibrated in the hybrid solar-electric dryer. The automated system was validated by comparing it with conventional devices for measuring the parameters under study. The data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance, Tukey test and linear regression at p ≤ 0.05. The system to turn on/off the exhaust worked efficiently, helping to reduce the errors related to the mass measurement. The GERAR Mobile App showed easy to be used since it has intuitive icons and compatibility with the most used operating systems for mobile devices. The responses in communication via Bluetooth were fast. The use of Arduino, a low-cost microcontroller, to automate the monitoring activity allowed estimating the mass of the product and collecting the drying air temperature and relative air humidity data through the DHT22. This sensor showed a good correlation of mass and air temperature readings between the automatic and conventional system, but low correlation for relative air humidity. In general, the automatic data acquisition system monitored in real time the parameters for drying agricultural products in the HSED.

This work describes the synthesis of new 1,3-benzoxathiol-2-one sulfonamides and evaluation of their ability to inhibit some in vitro (coagulant, proteolytic and hemolytic) and in vivo (hemorrhagic, edematogenic and lethality) toxic activities of Bothrops jararaca and Bothrops jararacussu venoms. Compounds have been synthesized from the coupling of intermediate 5-amino-6 methoxybenzo[d][1,3]oxathiol-2-one 4 with benzenesulfonyl chlorides. Characterization of the products was achieved by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectra (ESI-MS) techniques. Biological assay results have shown that most of compounds inhibited the main toxic activities of the venom of the two snake species. Compound 5b (N-(6 methoxy-2 oxobenzo[d][1,3]oxathiol-5-yl)-4-nitrobenzenesulfonamide) was the most efficient in inhibiting hemolysis of B. jararaca, and coagulation and proteolysis induced by both venoms. For in vivo activities, all compounds inhibited the edema, from 35 to 72%, and most of them exhibited antihemorrhagic and antilethality activities. Thus, the results pointed to the biological potential of these compounds, being promising molecules to treat envenomation by these snakes as well as to aid the current antivenom serum therapy.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

ABSTRACT Microorganisms play a vital role in maintaining soil fertility and plant health. They can act as biofertilizers and increase the resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. This study aimed at isolating and characterizing plant growth-promoting bacteria associated with sugarcane, as well as assessing their ability to promote plant growth. Endophytic bacteria from leaf, stem, root and rhizosphere were isolated from the RB 867515 commercial sugarcane variety and screened for indole acetic acid (IAA) production, ability to solubilize phosphate, fix nitrogen and produce hydrogen cyanide (HCN), ammonia and the enzymes pectinase, cellulase and chitinase. A total of 136 bacteria were isolated, with 83 of them presenting some plant growth mechanism: 47 % phosphate solubilizers, 26 % nitrogen fixers and 57 % producing IAA, 0.7 % HCN and chitinase, 45 % ammonia, 30 % cellulose and 8 % pectinase. The seven best isolates were tested for their ability to promote plant growth in maize. The isolates tested for plant growth promotion belong to the Enterobacteriaceae family and the Klebsiella, Enterobacter and Pantoea genera. Five isolates promoted plant growth in greenhouse experiments, showing potential as biofertilizers.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The factors that make difficult the normalization of TSH in hypothyroidism need special attention because some patients on thyroxine replacement do not maintain a normal TSH. We report a 50 year-old woman with autoimmune hypothyroidism of difficult compensation, associated with anemia, hypocalcemia with a previous episode of tetany, hypomagnesemia, psychologic alterations and important weight loss. After compensation of the hypothyroidism with doses of L-thyroxine as high as 325µg/day, the hypothesis of a malabsorptive syndrome was raised. Celiac disease was confirmed by elevated serum antigliadin antibody. A gluten-free diet was instituted which improved the symptoms associated with malabsorption and reduced the L-thyroxine requirement to 125µg/day. Because several studies have shown an association of both diseases, a routine screening for celiac disease has been widely proposed in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease.
