ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of spineless cactus (Opuntia stricta Haw) in the diet of sheep on the balance of macrominerals, renal function, and blood metabolites. Five sheep cannulated in the rumen (61.5±9.5kg body weight) were used in a 5 × 5 Latin square composed of five diets and five experimental periods. The experimental period lasted 105 days, with five periods of 21 days each. Four diets containing levels of spineless cactus (121, 245, 371, and 500g/kg of dry matter (DM)), and a control diet were evaluated. Samples of the ingredients, orts, feces, urine, and blood were collected. Spineless cactus inclusion in sheep diets increased the DM intake, ash, oxalate, and all macrominerals intake (P < 0.05), but did not affect the urinary and fecal excretion of P, as well as the concentration of P in the blood (P > 0.05). It is possible to verify that the inclusion of spineless cactus, up to the level of 500g/kg of DM in the sheep diets, does not appear to cause damage to the animal’s health. Its inclusion does not compromise kidney function or blood metabolites evaluated herein.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da inclusão de palma forrageira (Opuntia stricta Haw) na dieta de ovinos sobre o balanço dos macrominerais, a função renal e os metabólitos sanguíneos. Cinco ovinos canulados no rúmen (61,5±9,5kg de peso corporal) foram distribuídos em um quadrado de 5 × 5 latinos, composto de cinco dietas e cinco períodos experimentais. O período experimental teve duração de 105 dias, sendo cinco períodos de 21 dias cada. Foram avaliadas quatro dietas contendo níveis de palma forrageira (121, 245, 371 e 500g/kg de matéria seca (MS)), e uma dieta controle. Foram coletadas amostras dos ingredientes, sobras, fezes, urina e sangue. A inclusão de palma forrageira na dieta dos ovinos aumentou o consumo de MS, cinzas, oxalato e todos os macrominerais (P<0,05), mas não afetou a excreção urinária e a fecal de P, bem como a concentração de P no sangue (P>0,05). É possível verificar que a inclusão de palma forrageira, até o nível de 500g/kg de MS na dieta de ovinos, não parece causar danos à saúde do animal. Sua inclusão não compromete a função renal ou os metabólitos sanguíneos avaliados.

ABSTRACT The fungus that causes Asian soybean rust, Phakopsora pachyrhizi, shows crossed and multiple resistance to the three chemical groups of site-specific fungicides (triazoles, strobilurins and carboxamides). This fact evidences the need to implement strategies for the preventive management of resistance. An alternative can be the use of microorganisms capable of interfering in the development of pathogens, as well as of acting as resistance inducers in the plants. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of a biological product based on Bacillus subtilis BV02, alone or in association with a copper-based product, on Asian soybean rust control, as well as the agronomic performance of soybean. Thus, two experiments were developed, one in the field and another one in the laboratory. For the experiment conducted in the field, a randomized block design was used with (5x2)+1 factorial arrangement of treatments, including four replicates. The first factor corresponded to application, during post-emergence of soybeans, of five B. subtilis BV02 doses (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 4.0 L c.p. ha-1). The second factor corresponded to association or not with a copper-based product. The additional treatment consisted of applying the fungicide association [azoxystrobin + benzovindiflupyr] + mancozeb. In the laboratory experiment, germination of Phakopsora pachyrhizi uredospores in Elisa plates was evaluated in a completely randomized design with eight replicates. Treatments were the same as those adopted in the field experiment, except for the chemical fungicide, since mancozeb was not added to the sprayed broth. Increasing doses of B. subtilis BV02, applied alone, provided reductions in Asian soybean rust severity, and this behavior was not observed when it was applied in association with the copper-based product. Considering the association between B. subtilis BV02 and the copper-based product, the best Asian rust control results were found with doses equal or inferior to 1.0 L c.p. ha-1. Soybean yield was superior to that of the treatment containing fungicides with the use of B. subtilis BV02 alone (1.0 and 2.0 L c.p. ha-1), with application of only a copper-based product and with the combination of this micronutrient with B. subtilis BV02 (2.0 L c.p. ha-1).

RESUMO O fungo causador da ferrugem asiática na soja, Phakopsora pachyrhizi, apresenta resistência cruzada e múltipla aos três grupos químicos (triazóis, estrobilurinas e carboxamidas) de fungicidas sítio-específicos. Este fato torna evidente a necessidade da implementação de estratégias para o manejo de prevenção da resistência. Uma alternativa pode ser a utilização de microrganismos com capacidade de interferir no desenvolvimento de patógenos, bem como atuarem como indutores da resistência das plantas. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia de produto biológico à base de Bacillus subtilis BV02 isolado ou associado à produto à base de cobre no controle de ferrugem asiática, bem como desempenho agronômico da soja. Para tanto, foram instalados dois experimentos, sendo um no campo e outro em laboratório. Para o experimento conduzido em campo, o delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, estando os tratamentos dispostos em arranjo fatorial (5x2)+1, com quatro repetições. O primeiro fator correspondeu a aplicação, em pós-emergência da soja, de cinco doses de B. subtilis BV02 (0, 0,5, 1,0, 2,0 ou 4,0 L p.c. ha-1). O segundo fator correspondeu a associação ou não com produto à base de cobre. O tratamento adicional consistiu na aplicação da associação entre os fungicidas [azoxystrobina + benzovindiflupir] + mancozebe. No experimento em laboratório foi avaliada a germinação dos uredósporos de P. pachyrhizi em placas Elisa, no delineamento inteiramente casualizado com oito repetições. Foram utilizados os mesmos tratamentos do experimento do campo, diferenciando-se apenas o fungicida químico, o qual não foi adicionado mancozebe a calda aplicada. O aumento de dose de B. subtilis BV02, aplicado isoladamente, proporcionou reduções na severidade de ferrugem, não sendo visualizado este comportamento quando associado ao produto à base de cobre. Para a associação entre B. subtilis BV02 e produto à base de cobre, os melhores resultados para o controle de ferrugem asiática foram visualizados em doses iguais ou inferiores a 1,0 L p.c. ha-1. A produtividade da soja foi superior ao tratamento contendo fungicidas com a utilização de B. subtilis BV02 isolado (1,0 e 2,0 L p.c. ha-1), com aplicação apenas de produto à base de cobre e com utilização deste micronutriente em associação ao B. subtilis BV02 (2,0 L p.c. ha-1).

Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) and Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML) have been widely studied in the last 30 years, being fundamental for the development of instructional materials for learning that take into account the limitations in human working memory. Although relevant, we show the inexistence of both theories in the curricula of undergraduate courses in Physics. The contribution of this work is to highlight such a gap, thus contributing to discussions aming the incorporation of CLT and CTML in the curricula of Physics teacher education in federal and state universities in the country.

A Teoria da Carga Cognitiva (TCC) e a Teoria Cognitiva da Aprendizagem Multimídia (TCAM) têm sido largamente estudadas nos últimos 30 anos, sendo fundamentais para a elaboração de materiais instrucionais para a aprendizagem que levem em conta as limitações na memória de trabalho humana. Apesar da relevância da TCC e da TCAM, evidenciamos uma lacuna na abordagem a ambas as teorias nos currículos dos cursos de licenciatura plena em Física de universidades públicas brasileiras (federais e estaduais). Nosso objetivo, levantando essa questão, é contribuir com discussões que possam levar a TCC e a TCAM a serem incorporadas aos currículos de formação de professores de Física nas universidades do país.

RESUMO Objetivou-se desenvolver uma placa de osteotomia niveladora do platô tibial (TPLO) modificada e compará-la biomecanicamente à placa de compressão bloqueada (LCP) e à construção placa-pino intramedular na estabilização da fratura cominutiva proximal em tíbias sintéticas caninas. Para tal, tíbias caninas sintéticas foram divididas em três grupos, sendo o grupo 1 formado pela placa de TPLO modificada, o grupo 2 por placas LCP e o grupo 3 pela construção placa-pino intramedular. Os espécimes foram submetidos à carga até a falha em compressão axial, flexão mediolateral e craniocaudal em três pontos. Não houve diferença estatística entre os três grupos quanto à rigidez (N/mm) e à deformação (mm) nos testes de compressão axial. A placa de TPLO modificada obteve carga até a falha semelhante à construção placa-pino intramedular em flexão craniocaudal. Não houve diferença significativa entre os grupos nos testes de flexão mediolateral em relação à carga até a falha e a deformação, e a variável rigidez não apresentou diferenças significativas entre os grupos 1 e 2. Em conclusão, a placa de TPLO modificada apresentou similaridade mecânica em comparação com a LCP e a construção placa-pino. No entanto, estudos clínicos são necessários para determinar o valor desse novo implante na fixação de fraturas tibiais proximais.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to develop a modified tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) plate and to compare its biomechanical properties with a locking compression plate (LCP) and plate-rod constructs for the stabilization of experimentally induced gap fractures in canine synthetic tibias. The tibial models were assigned to either repair with a modified TPLO plate (Group 1), locking compression plate construct (Group 2), or plate-rod construct (Group 3). The specimens were loaded to failure in axial compression, three-point mediolateral and craniocaudal bending. There was no statistical difference between the three groups regarding stiffness (N/mm) and deformation (mm) in axial compression. The modified TPLO plate achieved load to failure similar to the plate-rod construct in craniocaudal bending. There was no significant difference between groups on mediolateral bending tests regarding load to failure and deformation. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in stiffness between groups 1 and 2. In conclusion, the modified TPLO plate had similar mechanical properties to LCP and plate-rod construct in the axial compression and bending tests. Nonetheless, clinical studies with a large population of dogs are required to determine the value of this new implant in proximal tibial fracture repair.

Abstract Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) has gained prominence as an anti-corrosive pigment. The performance of anti-corrosive coatings based on Nb2O5 was tested in an environment with an acid atmosphere and at high temperatures. For comparison, SAE 1020 carbon steel samples were coated with two anti-corrosive coatings based on Nb2O5: applied by thermal spray and epoxy paint. The samples were partially immersed in the laboratory for 720 h and 1440 h in a 40% (v/v) H2SO4 at 25°C, 60°C, and 80°C. An in-situ evaluation was carried out of chemical industry installations over 4383 h in microclimates with the presence of corrosive agents at temperatures up to 70°C. The results obtained showed that the Nb2O5 coatings applied by thermal spray offer better anti-corrosive performance under immersive conditions. In contrast, under conditions submitted to steam, both the Nb2O5 coatings applied by thermal spraying and epoxy-Nb2O5 paint show excellent anti-corrosive behavior.

Keller’s article entitled “Good-bye teacher…” [J. Appl. Behav. Anal. 1 , 79–89 (1968)] was fundamental for the development and dissemination of Keller’s Personalized System of Instruction (PSI), which was one of the central issues in the discussions on psychology and education in the 1970s and 1980s, and nowadays has attracted attention in the context of the increasing use of online education. Belonging to a class of approaches usually named as mastery learning, PSI and modified PSI courses (Keller-type courses) present several interesting results, such as final grade distributions where the majority of students achieve the highest grades. Here, we present a simple mathematical model underlying Keller-type individualized teaching methods, describing, in terms of average characteristic parameters, the time evolution of the distribution of students per unit of content, and that most students achieve the highest grades at the end of the course. By applying this model to a real case of an introductory electromagnetism Keller-type course, we obtained its characteristic parameters with which we showed good agreement between the predictions and observations. The model presented here results in a simple formula, which is very accessible for use by a wide audience interested in planning or investigating Keller-type or other mastering learning methods.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a aplicação tópica do extrato alcoólico da semente e da casca da Dipteryx alata Vogel na cicatrização de feridas cutâneas, em camundongos. Um total de 54 camundongos C57BL/6 foram utilizados neste estudo, distribuídos em três grupos de 18 animais (controle, semente e casca). Em todos os animais, um fragmento de pele foi ressecado da região dorsal do tórax utilizando-se instrumento de punção de 9mm de diâmetro, após o qual foi realizada aplicação tópica de creme base (veículo), extrato hidroalcoólico 10% de semente ou casca, duas vezes ao dia. As avaliações macroscópica, histológica e imuno-histoquímica foram realizadas no sétimo, 14º e 21º dias de pós-operatório. Não foi observada diferença significativa quanto à área da ferida cutânea entre os grupos, apenas um efeito temporal na cicatrização (P>0,05), indicando estágio possivelmente mais avançado desse processo. Porém, na avaliação histológica, os grupos semente e controle apresentaram colagenização mais intensa que o grupo casca (P<0,05). Dipteryx alata Vogel mostrou-se inerte no processo de cicatrização de feridas em camundongos.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the topical application of alcoholic extracts of Dipteryx alata Vogel almonds and bark in skin wound healing in mice. Fifty-four C57BL/6 mice were equally distributed into three groups: Control, Almond, and Bark. A 9 mm skin fragment was resected from the dorsal region of the animals’ thorax. The wounds were submitted to topical application of base cream (vehicle), 10% hydroalcoholic almond extract, or bark extract twice a day. Macroscopic, histological, and immunohistochemical evaluations were conducted on the 7th, 14th, and 21st postoperative days. No significant difference was observed regarding skin wound area among groups, with the parameter presenting only a temporal effect on healing (p>0.05). The almond and control groups exhibited more intense collagenization than the bark group (p<0.05). Dipteryx alata Vogel showed to be inert in the wound healing process in mice.

RESUMO Devido à ausência de estudos sobre capivaras na região Nordeste do Brasil, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a sanidade desses roedores de vida livre em três áreas dos biomas Mata Atlântica (2) e Caatinga (1) do estado de Pernambuco, por meio da determinação de parâmetros da hematologia e bioquímica sérica. De novembro de 2016 a dezembro de 2017, foram capturados 21 animais, dos quais foram coletadas amostras de sangue para avaliação hematológica (eritrograma, leucograma e plaquetometria) e bioquímica sérica (atividade enzimática, perfil proteico, energético e mineral). A maioria dos parâmetros esteve dentro dos valores de normalidade para a espécie, embora alguns apresentassem diferenças estatisticamente significativas de acordo com a área de estudo (hemoglobina, hematócrito, VCM, CHCM, eosinófilos, fosfatase alcalina, proteína total, albumina, ácido úrico, creatinina, lactato, sódio e magnésio) e o sexo dos animais (ácido úrico). Os parâmetros obtidos são apresentados como referência e atestam a sanidade e o bom estado nutricional de populações de capivaras nos biomas Mata Atlântica e Caatinga da região Nordeste do Brasil. As informações aportadas neste estudo pioneiro na região Nordeste contribuem para aumentar o conhecimento sobre a ecofisiologia e a conservação in situ de capivaras.

ABSTRACT Due to the lack of studies about capybaras in the northeast region of Brazil, the objective of this study was to evaluate the health status of free-ranging capybaras in three areas of Atlantic Forest (2) and Caatinga (1) biomes in Pernambuco state, through the determination of hematological and serum biochemical parameters. From November 2016 to December 2017, 21 animals were captured and blood samples were collected for the hematological (erythrogram, leukogram and platelet counts) and serum biochemistry (enzymatic activity, protein, energy and mineral profile) evaluation. Hematological and serum biochemical parameters were within the normal range for the species, but some presented statistically significant variations according to the study area (hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCHC, eosinophils count, alkaline phosphatase, total proteins, albumin, uric acid, creatinine, lactate, sodium and magnesium) and sex of the animals (uric acid). The parameters obtained are presented as reference and attest to the health and good nutritional status of populations of capybaras in the Atlantic Forest and Caatinga biomes of northeastern Brazil. The information provided in this pioneering study in the northeast region contributes to increased knowledge about the ecophysiology and in situ conservation of capybaras.

RESUMO Introdução: O decanoato de nandrolona é um análogo sintético da testosterona, considerado um dos esteroides anabólicos androgênicos (EAA) mais utilizados entre adolescentes e atletas. Sua ingestão crônica aumenta a incidência de anormalidades cardiovasculares em atletas, porém o mecanismo que causa essas alterações ainda permanece desconhecido. Objetivos: O estudo teve como objetivo verificar os possíveis efeitos do uso de esteroides anabólicos androgênicos (EAA) na morfologia e no metabolismo oxidativo do coração de ratos treinados e sedentários. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo prospectivo comparativo nível II. Vinte e quatro ratos Wistar foram distribuídos em grupos que realizaram exercícios de corrida voluntária (GT) e sedentários (GS) e faziam uso dos EAA, Grupo Treinado com Anabolizante (GTA) e Grupo Sedentário com Anabolizante (GSA). Durante os três meses do protocolo de corrida, os animais receberam injeção intramuscular de 5 mg/kg p.c. de EAA. Após o período de treinamento, houve a eutanásia e remoção do coração dos ratos para avaliação da peroxidação lipídica e capacidade antioxidante, além da análise morfométrica. Resultados: Verificaram-se que os grupos anabolizantes, GSA (0,3072 ± 0,0531) e GTA (0,2732 ± 0,0413), apresentaram maior peroxidação lipídica quando comparados aos grupos não anabolizantes GS (0,1705 ± 0,0224) e GT (0,1785 ± 0,0340). Conclusões: Não houve alteração na capacidade antioxidante total, assim como não houve alteração na espessura do septo interventricular e da parede ventricular esquerda. Portanto, o uso de esteroides anabólicos androgênicos não provocou alterações morfológicas no miocárdio, contudo alterou o metabolismo oxidativo. Verificou-se também que a prática de exercício aeróbico não teve efeito protetor contra a peroxidação lipídica no miocárdio provocada pelo uso dos EAA. ABSTRACT Introduction: Nandrolone decanoate is a synthetic testosterone analogue considered one of the most widely used anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) among adolescents and athletes. Chronic ingestion of AAS increases the incidence of cardiovascular abnormalities in athletes, but the mechanism that causes these changes remains unknown. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to verify the possible effects of the use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) on the morphology and oxidative metabolism of the heart in exercised and sedentary rats. Methods: This is a comparative prospective level II study. Twenty-four Wistar rats were distributed in groups that performed voluntary (TG) and sedentary (SG) running exercises, and used AAS: the Anabolic Training Group (ATG), and the Anabolic Sedentary Group (ASG). During the three months of the running protocol, the animals received an intramuscular injection of 5 mg/kg b.p. of AAS. After the training period, the rats were euthanized and the hearts were removed for evaluation of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant capacity, and for morphometric analysis. Results: The anabolic groups, ASG (0.3072 ± 0.0531) and ATG (0.2732 ± 0.0413), presented higher lipid peroxidation when compared to the non-anabolic groups SG (0.1705 ± 0.0224) and TG (0.1785 ± 0.0340). Conclusion: There was no change in total antioxidant capacity or in the thickness of the interventricular septum and left ventricular wall. Thus, the use of anabolic androgenic steroids did not cause morphological changes in the myocardium. However it did alter the oxidative metabolism. It was also verified that aerobic exercise had no protective effect against lipid peroxidation in the myocardium caused by the use of AAS. Level of evidence II; Prospective comparative study.

RESUMEN Introducción: El decanoato de nandrolona es un análogo sintético de la testosterona considerado uno de los esteroides anabólicos androgénicos (EAA) más utilizados entre los adolescentes y atletas. Su ingestión crónica aumenta la incidencia de anomalías cardiovasculares en atletas, aunque el mecanismo que causa esas alteraciones sigue siendo desconocido. Objetivos: El estudio tuvo como objetivo verificar los posibles efectos del uso de esteroides anabólicos androgénicos (EAA) en la morfología y en el metabolismo oxidativo del corazón de ratones entrenados y sedentarios. Métodos: Se trata de un estudio prospectivo comparativo nivel II. Fueron distribuidos 24 ratones Wistar en grupos que realizaron ejercicios de carrera voluntaria (GE) y sedentarios (GS), y hacían uso de los EAA, Grupo Entrenado con Anabolizante (GEA) y Grupo Sedentario con Anabolizante (GSA). Durante los tres meses del protocolo de carrera, los animales recibieron inyección intramuscular de 5 mg/kg p.c. de EAA. Después del período de entrenamiento, hubo la eutanasia y remoción del corazón de los ratones, para evaluación de la peroxidación lipídica y capacidad antioxidante, además del análisis morfométrico. Resultados: Se verificó que los grupos anabolizantes, GSA (0,3072 ± 0,0531) y GEA (0,2732 ± 0,0413), presentaron mayor peroxidación lipídica cuando comparados a los grupos no anabolizantes GS (0,1705 ± 0,0224) y GE (0,1785 ± 0,0340). Conclusiones: No hubo alteración en la capacidad antioxidante total, así como no hubo alteración en el espesor del septo interventricular y de la pared ventricular izquierda. Por lo tanto, el uso de esteroides anabólicos androgénicos no provocó alteraciones morfológicas en el miocardio, aunque alteró el metabolismo oxidativo. Se verificó también que la práctica de ejercicio aeróbico no tuvo efecto protector contra la peroxidación lipídica en el miocardio provocada por el uso de EAA. ABSTRACT Objectives: The plague, which is an infectious disease caused by Yersinia pestis, still threatens many populations in several countries. The worldwide increase in human plague cases and the potential use of the bacteria as a biological weapon reinforce the need to study the immunity that is induced by potential vaccine candidates. To determine the immunogenicity of antigenic preparations based on the F1 protein and the total extract from Y. pestis, we assessed the role of these antigens in inducing an immune response. Methods: The immunogenicity of antigenic preparations based on the Y. pestis (YP) total extract and the Y. pestis fraction 1 capsular antigen protein (F1) was determined in Swiss-Webster mice immunized with 40 µg or 20 µg for each preparation. Immunophenotyping was performed by flow cytometry. Results: Animals immunized with the YP total extract did not elicit detectable anti-F1 antibodies (Ab) in the hemaglutination/inhibition (HA/HI) test. Animals immunized with 40 µg or 20 µg of the F1 protein produced anti-F1 Abs, with titres ranging from 1/16 to 1/8132. The average of CD3+-CD4+ and CD3+-CD8+ T cells did not differ significantly between the groups. Neither YP total extract nor F1 protein induced a significant expression of IFN-γ and IL-10 in CD4+ T lymphocytes. In addition, F1 failed to induce IFN-γ expression in CD8+ T cells, unlike the YP total extract. Conclusion: The results showed that F1 protein is not an immunogenic T cell antigen, although the YP total extract (40 µg dose) favoured CD8+ T cell-mediated cellular immunity.

RESUMO: Prosthenorchis elegans é um acantocéfalo intestinal descrito em primatas neotropicais. Apesar do parasitismo por P. elegans já ter sido descrito de saguis da Mata Atlântica brasileira, não há relatos da infecção em saguis-da-cara-branca (Callithrix geofroyi) de vida livre. O objetivo deste estudo é relatar um caso de parasitismo por P. elegans em um C. geoffroyi de vida livre proveniente da Mata Atlântica brasileira no Estado do Espírito Santo e caracterizar os achados patológicos e parasitológicos dessa infecção. Um sagui-da-cara-branca foi necropsiado no Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária da Universidade de Vila Velha, onde foi observada intensa enterite ulcerativa transmural crônica associada a vinte helmintos cilíndricos presentes no jejuno e íleo. Conclui-se que o parasitismo por P. elegans ocorre em grupos livres de saguis-da-cara-branca e a sua infecção leva a lesões intestinais graves; portanto, este parasita pode prejudicar a sobrevivência deste animal na vida selvagem e pode ter algum impacto na conservação de primatas na Mata Atlântica brasileira.

ABSTRACT: Prosthenorchis elegans is an acanthocephalan intestinal parasite reported in neotropical primates. Despite parasitism by P. elegans having already been described in wild marmosets in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, there are no reports of this infection in wild Geoffroy’s marmoset (Callithrix geofroyi). The aim of this study is to report one case of P. elegans parasitism in a free-ranging C. geoffroyi from Brazilian Atlantic Forest in Espírito Santo state, and characterize the pathological and parasitological findings of this infection. One Geoffroy’s marmoset necropsied at the Vila Velha University’s Veterinary Pathology Laboratory presented intense chronic transmural ulcerative enteritis associated with twenty cylindrical helminths present in the jejunum and ileum. We can conclude that parasitism by P. elegans occurs in free-ranging groups of Geoffroy’s marmosets. Its infection produced severe intestinal lesions even in free-ranging marmoset and therefore is a threat to this animal’s survival in wildlife and can have some impact on primate conservation in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

ABSTRACT Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni, Asteraceae, is used as a food additive because its leaves are a source of steviol glycosides. There are examples of tissue culture based on micropropagation and phytochemical production of S. rebaudiana leaves but there are few studies on adventitious root culture of S. rebaudiana. More than 90% of the plants used in industry are harvested indiscriminately. In order to overcome this situation, the development of methodologies that employ biotechnology, such as root culture, provides suitable alternatives for the sustainable use of plants. The aim of this study was to compare morpho-anatomical transverse sections of S. rebaudiana roots grown in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro system used to maintain root cultures consisted of a gyratory shaker under dark and light conditions and a roller bottle system. Transverse sections of S. rebaudiana roots grown in vitro were structurally and morphologically different when compared to the control plant; roots artificially maintained in culture media can have their development affected by the degree of media aeration, sugar concentration, and light. GC–MS and TLC confirmed that S. rebaudiana roots grown in vitro have the ability to produce metabolites, which can be similar to those produced by wild plants.

RESUMO Os manguezais representam zonas de elevada produtividade biológica sendo uma das regiões mais ricas em substâncias bioativas utilizadas na produção de medicamentos. Conocarpus erectus (Combretaceae) conhecida como mangue botão é uma das espécies encontrada nos manguezais e é utilizada na medicina popular no tratamento de anemia, catarro, conjuntivite, diabetes, diarréia, febre, gonorréia, dor de cabeça, hemorragia, orquite, brotoeja, inchaços e sífilis. O presente estudo objetivou investigar a toxicidade aguda de extrato aquoso de folhas de C. erectus em camundongos albinos suíços. O material vegetal foi coletado no manguezal de Vila Velha, localizado em Itamaracá (PE). O material foi submetido a um screening fitoquímico onde foram usados protocolos extrativos de identificação de moléculas majoritárias presentes nas folhas. A avaliação da toxicidade aguda do extrato aquoso de C. erectus seguiu o modelo da Toxicidade Aguda de Classe baseado no Guia da OECD 423, 2001. As moléculas majoritárias identificadas foram: flavonóides, taninos e saponinas. A DL50 foi estimada em 2.000 mg/Kg p.c. Portanto, o extrato apresentou baixa toxicidade aguda classificada na categoria 5.

ABSTRACT Mangroves represent areas of high biological productivity and it is a region rich in bioactive substances used in medicine production. Conocarpus erectus (Combretaceae) known as button mangrove is one of the species found in mangroves and it is used in folk medicine in the treatment of anemia, catarrh, conjunctivitis, diabetes, diarrhea, fever, gonorrhea, headache, hemorrhage, orchitis, rash, bumps and syphilis. The present study aimed to investigate the acute toxicity of aqueous extract of leaves of C. erectus in Swiss albino mice. The plant material was collected in Vila Velha mangroves, located in Itamaracá (PE). The material was subjected to a phytochemical screening where extractive protocols to identify majority molecules present in leaves were used. The evaluation of acute toxicity of aqueous extract of C. erectus followed the model of Acute Toxicity Class based on OECD 423 Guideline, 2001. The majority molecules were identified: flavonoids, tannins and saponins. The LD50 was estimated at 2,000 mg/kg bw. Therefore, the aqueous extract showed low acute toxicity classified in category 5.

RESUMO Hérnias pleuroperitoneais são o tipo mais incomum de hérnias diafragmáticas em cães e gatos. O tratamento de escolha é cirúrgico e pode envolver o uso de implantes protéticos na abordagem via laparotomia. No presente relato, é descrito o reparo de uma hérnia pleuroperitoneal congênita através de laparoscopia com utilização de malha de polipropileno. A cirurgia foi viável. Houve redução apropriada da hérnia sem observação de complicações.

ABSTRACT Pleuroperitoneal hernias are the most uncommon type of diaphragmatic hernias in dogs and cats. The treatment of choice is surgery and may involve the use of prosthetic implant through celiotomy. In the current report, laparoscopic repair of a congenital pleuroperitoneal hernia using polypropylene mesh in a dog is described. The surgery was feasible. Appropriate reduction of the hernia was carried out and no complications were noted.

Apesar das limitações nutricionais e elevada acidez dos solos, a flora do cerrado é a mais rica entre as savanas. Muitas espécies lenhosas do cerrado possuem folhas escleromórficas e o nível de escleromorfismo foliar parece depender da disponibilidade de água e nutrientes no solo. Visando um melhor entendimento sobre a estrutura e funcionalidade da vegetação do cerrado, foram comparadas duas comunidades de cerrado sensu stricto: uma na região central do Brasil (Brasília, DF) e a outra na periferia sul (Itirapina, SP). Para tal, comparamos a duração da estação seca, a fertilidade do solo, as concentrações foliares de N, P, K, Ca e Mg e a área foliar específica (AFE) entre as duas comunidades do cerrado. A estação seca na periferia foi menor em relação à região central, e seu solo foi considerado mais fértil e mais ácido. A vegetação periférica apresentou maior AFE e apresentou maiores concentrações foliares de N, P, Ca e Mg. Baseado nestes resultados, propomos que a maior AFE observada na comunidade periférica se deve à menor duração da estação seca, a qual possibilita melhores condições para absorção de nutrientes do solo.

Despite limitations of low fertility and high acidity of the soils, the cerrado flora is the richest amongst savannas. Many cerrado woody species show sclerophyllous leaves, which might be related to the availability of water and nutrients in the soil. To better understand the function and structure of cerrado vegetation within its own variations, we compared two cerrado communities: one in its core region in central Brazil (Brasília, DF) and the other on its southern periphery (Itirapina, SP). We contrasted the length of the dry season, soil fertility rates, leaf concentrations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg and the specific leaf area (SLA) between these communities. The dry season was shorter on the periphery, where the soil was more fertile although more acidic. Plants from the periphery showed higher SLA and higher leaf concentrations of N, P, Ca and Mg. We propose that the higher SLA of plants from the periphery is related to the shorter dry season, which allows better conditions for nutrient uptake.
